5-0 out of 5 stars "SHE DID AN EXCELANT JOB"
"SHE DID AN EXCELANT JOB", IS WHAT WAS SAID WHEN I FILED MY BANKRUPTCY FORMS. FOR MONTHS, I STRUGGLED WITH THE KIT ON MY OWN. I COULDN'T GET ANY HELP FROM THE COURT CLERKS, AND I EVEN TRYED AN ONLINE CHAT WITH A LAWYER(HE WAS JUST AS LITTLE HELP AS THE CLERKS). MY OPTIONS BECAME: EITHER CALL IT A LOSE, OR ORDER A BOOK AND TRY ONE MORE TIME. WELL!, NEEDLESS TO SAY, IT TOOK ME TWO DAYS TO READ THE BOOK AND GATHER THE INFORMATION THAT I NEEDED TO COMPLETE THE KIT. I HAD BEEN WRESTLING WITH THE KIT FROM MAY TO AUGUST BEFORE I ORDERED THE BOOK. BELIEVE IT OR NOT, IT TOOK ME TWO HOURS TO COMPLETE THE KIT IN IT'S ENTIRETY, AFTER READING THE BOOK. I WAS VERY PLEASED WITH THE RESAULTS OF "DEBT FREE". I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANY ONE SET ON FILLING A CHAPTER SEVEN BANKRUPTCY, AND JUST CAN'T AFFORD THE FEES OF A PROFESSIONAL.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book if you are interested in filing Chap 7 bankruptcy
I found this book to be helpful for filing Chapter 7 bankruptcy as it has forms with instructions and examples along side. This is not the book for you if you are exploring other ways to correct your financial situation or if you want to file Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Book Description

The potential failure of a large bank presents vexing questions for policymakers. It poses significant risks to other financial institutions, to the financial system as a whole, and possibly to the economic and social order. Because of such fears, policymakers in many countries—developed and less developed, democratic and autocratic—respond by protecting bank creditors from all or some of the losses they otherwise would face. Failing banks are labeled "too big to fail" (or TBTF). This important new book examines the issues surrounding TBTF, explaining why it is a problem and discussing ways of dealing with it more effectively.

Gary H. Stern and Ron J. Feldman, officers with the Federal Reserve, warn that not enough has been done to reduce creditors’ expectations of TBTF protection. Many of the existing pledges and policies meant to convince creditors that they will bear market losses when large banks fail are not credible, resulting in significant net costs to the economy. The authors recommend that policymakers enact a series of reforms to reduce expectations of bailouts when large banks fail. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Idiot's Guide to Surviving Bankruptcy
What a great book! I recommend this book to anyone who is drowning in debt. Good advice and solutions that you can put to use right away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book
This book provided all the information I needed to deal with my current situation. It is very well written, and explains all the complicated issues in a clear and concise manner.

1-0 out of 5 stars If you truly are an ..., then you will like this one.
This book was completely worthless to me. It has no specific information about how to file bankruptcy or avoid it. If you need someone to pat you on the back and say "everything will be all right" but not offer any constructive solutions, then this might just be the book for you. For those with more substance in mind, I would suggest one of the NOLO books. They actually know what they are talking about.

4-0 out of 5 stars CASH IN ON THE ESSENTIAL BANKRUPTCY GUIDE
For those of you (and, yes, this means us) who are complete idiots when it comes to spending money - too much money, and then not knowing how we are going to pay for all those unwanted "necessities" - this book should be deposited directly on your book shelf. Carol Costa and James R. Beaman lay it all out, simply and succinctly: how to decide if bankruptcy is, indeed, the right option; a step-by-step guide to the actual process (with all those big words and legal language explained clearly and concisely), foolproof advice on dealing with those annoying creditors and their annoying phone calls, little-known ways to decrease monthly payments and expert advice on how to reestablish your credit. Yes it can be done, slowly and odically ... remember, says Costa, an expert as she herself has filed bankruptcy and survived it, there are no immediate magical solutions. "Just as it took many months, maybe even years, for your financial problems to develop," "she reminds us, "it may take some time for them to totally disappear." So, if you're in over your head, and drowning in a sea of debts, don't despair. Gather your bills, read the book, then decide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, Fantastic.
This is really a must have. I handled my own chapter 13, start to finish with this one. Even handled the emergency filing to get mean ole nasty pasty creditors that were harassing me intentionally off my case. I was even able to file a complaint with them thru the bankruptcy courts. This book references this, and I called the clerks office, and checked out web sites, and this book gave me the confidence, to file a complaint against these creditors. The interderagatorys are fanstasic. THese really helped me out, at my creditors meetings. I was able to even able to pursue a wage garnishment out of my soon to b X's pay check. This was the only way I was going to keep my stuff. I really enjoyed I must say representing my self. It is really not that hard, and more of u folks out there need to try it. They really don't chew ya up and spit ya out like everyone believes. It was not that stress ful, after everything was filed. Actually, It was nice to bask in the quiteness of the emeregency filing. My phone quit ringing. It was soooo nice. This one belongs rite up there with my bible. It was a thrill I must say to stand in line to file my paper work, schedules, and yes, I even filed a motion.! It was great standing there next to some of my towns high power bankruptcy attorneys. ONly thing, I have to say, when attorneys, start offering free advise, have a pen ready to write. I also learned be nice as pie to the clerks. They are so busy, and swamped with work. U will be glad you had patience. Patience is a virtue on this one as far as filings go. THe creditors meetings went well, I even drafted my own propsals of what I wanted, to happend. I even learned how to contest the amount of my truck, and did so, and requested the interest rate be dropped. I got just what I wanted. It actually was not as a terrible as we are taught in society to think. Oh my she/he file bankruptcy. It was not that bad, and also the bankruptcy court I went to, had a class on how to balance your budget, and it was very informational. Dom't feel bad if you have to do this someday. It happens to the bestest of us. IF you do this is definitely the book you wanna seek. I have compared up to some of the competetions, and I felt this one was the easy one to use. Plainest english. Simplest terms. I didnot feel intimidated at all by this book. This book covered all the bases, and then some. Others books I feel were not as complete as this one was. I researched books and sat down and looked thru them at my local book store. THis one won hands down. I must say, it is flexible, easy to tote with you, easy to put in babys bag, and easy to tote on bike with grocerys, and easy to clean up. I spilled coffee on mine... wipes up great. Later, Betty Hogges. :) ... Read more

Book Description

In 1982 Johns-Manville, a major asbestos manufacturer, declaresitself insolvent to avoid paying claims resulting from exposure to itsproducts.A year later, Continental Airlines, one of the top ten carriers in theUnitedStates, claims a deficit when the union resists plans to cut laborcosts. Laterstill, oil powerhouse Texaco cries broke rather than pay damagesresulting froma courtroom defeat by archrival Pennzoil. Bankruptcy, once a term that sent shudders up a manager's spine, has nowbecomea potent weapon in the corporate arsenal. Cancompanies unilaterally break legally negotiated labor contracts? Whatare theethical and legal rules of the corporate takeover game? In probing the Chapter 11 bankruptcies of Johns-Manville, FrankLorenzo'sContinental Airlines, and Texaco, Delaney shows not only that bankruptcyispursued by managers more and more as a strategy, but that it is becomingaccepted by the business community as a viable option, and not just alast-ditchsolution. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent to understand corporate strategies
This was a very clear and cleverly written overview of the ways in which corporations and commercial creditors use bankruptcy in new ways-- as strategies to gain things they desire. The author makes a very convincing argument that bankruptcy does not mean that you are broke anymore. In fact, if you hear about a company declaring bankruptcy, there is a good chance that there is some strategy behind it. After reading this book, you will never look at business bankruptcy the same way again.

5-0 out of 5 stars The politics of corporate bankruptcy: top-rate
This book is not about the financial aspects of bankruptcy and it is not about how to turn around companies. It is about the politics of major corporate bankruptcies. It is clearly written and well documented. It is amazing how prescient the book is given what has happened at WorldCom and at Enron. For anyone that is interested in politics and the ways that Chapter 11 can be used as a strategy, this book is the best. If you want to understand why some huge companies might actually CHOOSE bankruptcy and gain some advantages by doing so, check out this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Bother
The author should have stuck with sociology or at least taken an accounting class before writing this book. Overall, the book is what you would expect from a sociologist writing about business.

5-0 out of 5 stars Corporate bankruptcy can be a STRATEGY!
I wanted to learn more about the asbestos problem and the bankruptcy filing of John-Mansville since I knew someone who had lung problems from asbestos. I heard about this book and got it. This is the first thing that I have read that really helped me to understand what happened when Mansville, the biggest asbestos company went bankrupt. The book is clear and explains complicated bankruptcy cases to the lay person. Now, I finally understand why people with asbestosis ended up going through years of delay in BANKRUPTCY court of all places! What is most amazing is how people who get asbestos end up being treated like "unsecured creditors" as if they lent their life to the corporation like a bank loan! Truly amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I read this book for a college class. I expected it to be boring because it was about bankruptcy but instead it was really interesting... The cases do come alive and you realize bankruptcy means something different than you thought it did. This book has me interested in taking bankruptcy classes in law school, something I thought I'd never do! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Beginner's Guide To Bankruptcy
Steven D. Strauss' Debt and Bankruptcy is an excellent, if not short, book on the personal bankruptcy process.

Because of its small size (around 140 pages, plus appendices), this is obviously not an exhaustive review of the entire legal process of bankruptcy, but manages to pack a lot of very useful and interesting information within its covers. I read the entire book over the course of a weekend, and was very impressed with how easy to read and understand the material was.

I have not read many other books on the bankruptcy process, but I certainly did learn quite a few useful things that I did not previously know from reading it.

Although the book briefly touches on other forms of bankruptcy, Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 are the two, main types covered. There is a strong bias towards Chapter 7, which is probably the best solution for the majority of consumers seeking debt relief under bankruptcy protection.

Strauss' writing style is enjoyable and to the point. Most chapters are fairly brief, and delve right into the subjects at hand. There are some examples sprinkled throughout the book, but they are extremely limited in scope, and usually only a few sentences long. However, the information presented elsewhere makes the law easy enough to understand that examples are largely unnecessary.

I certainly enjoyed reading this book, and found it very useful, informative and entertaining. It is certainly well worth the modest cover price. For those of you contemplating personal bankruptcy, this is an excellent resource, especially if you are largely unfamiliar with the bankruptcy process itself. My only complaint is that it could have obviously been much longer and more detailed. Still, for its size, you are definitely getting your money's worth. ... Read more
