2-0 out of 5 stars A Real Snore But Worth The Extra Effort
This book is a collection of academic papers on the subject of corporate bankruptcy and distress. The writers present an excellent but somewhat repetitive body of information in a very passive manner. As such, the book is a real snore! So if you choose to read it, drink an extra large Starbucks coffee and bear down. I found reading it well worth the effort. Given the real human issues, hardships, brinkmanship, and huge volume of case work involved in bankruptcy and distress, the subject matter could have been presented in a much more entertaining manner.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Academic
The book is a composite of ideas presented at a conference, is far too academic and fails to capture the concept of "Investment Opportunities" as the title suggests. Although information and data regarding the violation of absolute priority is interesting it is repeated over and over again by different authors. Repeative information is a problem since each chapter is a discussion by a different author.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too dated and theoretical to be practical use
This book was originally published in 1991. The reprint has not been updated so the material is very dated. I found little of practical use in this book and would recommend Bankruptcy Investing by Ben Branch instead. ... Read more

Organized crime is renowned for its code of silence; the unavailability of material from government investigative agencies due to its sensitive nature makes the task of the researcher difficult indeed.

One source, which was used as the basis for the preparation of this case study, is court testimony - both criminal and civil - in cases involving suspected organized crime figures.

The task of using such sources is a tedious one.In excess of 8,000 pages of narrative testimony were read to prepare this paper, but the source adds an important measure to the further understanding of organized crime and its method of operation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have!
I checked this book out of the library and after reading it, decided it was a book I had to have on my shelf or else no other patrons would get to read it because I'd keep on renewing it! It includes all the basics of writing magazine articles, including: deciding your target audience and magazine, research, writing query letters and what to include in the query package, writing proposals, protocol for working with editors, manuscript formats, writing the article, and the business side, including contracts and rights. Straight forward, clear and concise writing that gives you the information you need in a logical order. Published in 2000 and is up to date with email query and submission information. Other how-to books on magazine article writing average $14.95, but even at $19.95 I still think it was worth every penny. Very highly recommended! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, chapters poorly organized...
This book addresses all the right topics. That's why it gets three stars.

Unfortunately, each individual chapter is so poorly organized that it's hard to follow the author's argument. The author's style is simply too discursive, too casual. Topics that should be divided by a subheading blend together. Where does one thought end and another begin? Typos further distract the reader. See for instance page 136, "The insolvency test is based on the idea that when a firm's assets are greater than its assets..." The word "liabilities" should replace one of the "assets" in this sentence. Lastly, the author, an academic, cites all sorts of cases that might have pedagogic value or be of historical interest but which have been qualified by subsequent judgments. They are no longer leading cases and, so, this book is of limited value as a desk reference.

If you are a lawyer, I would recommend reading the legislation instead of buying this book. Chapter 11 is only about 100 pages (with annotations), half the length of this book. Other Chapters of Title 11 are even shorter. You can download the Bankruptcy Code for free along with the rest of the US Code if you are so inclined.

Marvin Chirelstein's text on income tax (also from the Concepts & Insights Series) does a much better job of introducing the reader to sophisticated subject matter. I give it 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding introduction to bankruptcy law
At once rigorous yet lucid, comprehensive yet short, this is one of the best introductions to bankruptcy law out there. The author masterfully surveys the case law and the logical structure of each of the key areas of bankruptcy law.

One of the best features of the book is its structure of individual chapters dedicated to important parts of the law like Bankruptcy Estate, Claims against the Estate, Executory Contracts, Fraudelent Conveyance, Preferences, DIPs, etc. Each chapter is no more than 20 pages, allowing the reader to get a very good birds-eye view of each topic.

While this is a high-level survey of the law, it is still one of the best books to read to develop a framework to tackle the more detailed aspects of the law. Highly recommended for anyone who wants a solid introduction to this field. ... Read more

Since launching Operation Total Disclosure in 1992, the U.S. Department of Justice has endeavored to send the message that bankruptcy fraud will not be tolerated. Book Description

Corporate bankruptcy is a defining characteristic of the market economy. It encapsulates the fundamental conflict between capital and labor. But, with one or two notable exceptions, the political and social dynamics of bankruptcy law and practice have been largely overlooked by sociolegal scholars. This book remedies that neglect. It compares key English and American insolvency laws to identify those underlying political forces that established corporate bankruptcy law on both sides of the Atlantic. Also, it shows how and why corporate insolvency regulation is the creation of the lawyers who interpret and administer it. This book will be welcomed as an important sociological study, for it advances our understanding of how substantive law results from conflicts among the professionals who help to make it. ...
