5-0 out of 5 stars A must for professionals in disability law and medicine
The 5th Edition is the Rosetta Stone for evaluating permanent impairment. It is invaluable in workers' compensation, where many states, provinces and several countries either mandate its use or treat this work as an authorativie source of impairment evaluation. It may also come to have utility in ADA cases, especially with its emphasis on activities of daily living, and as a predicate to demonstrating the significance or insignificance of an impairment's effect on major life activities after Toyota vs Williams. The vision chapter represents the AMA's first major, published revision to the science and knowledge of eye impairments since the early 1900's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Charts
Although my copy came with 10 pages of errata sheets stuck in the front of it (presumably cured in the 5th version), I still got a lot out of reading through this book. The descriptions of impairment are de regeur reading for coming up with convincing settlement demands for soft tissue injuries. Someone's shoulder hurts? How do you say they have lost 20% of their upper body use as a result? Why not 90% of one finger, 50% of one hand, and 80% of one arm? Multiple impairments like these can be descriptively segmented to more fully elaborate what a patient is feeling, and how they are limited in daily activities. Both the plaintiff bar and the insurance community are well-served by this book. As for the medical accuracy of it, I'll take the AMA's word for it. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd edition
I found Carolyn Buppert's second edition of Business Practice and Legal Guide to be very helpful. The additional chapters are useful for my practice and for research on a state wide level. I would recommend this book to nurse practitioners and students of the profession. It is proving to be a valuable resource for improving NP practice in Alabama. Be sure to get the second edition (2003/2004)as the first was published in 1995.

1-0 out of 5 stars Information is outdated
As a grad student interested in starting my own practice upon graduation, I found this book to be useless. It has been reprinted by another publishing company and its original copyright date is 1999. Between then and now - 2004 - a lot of things have changed. Therefore, I would recommend that anyone who requires current information should look elsewhere. This is a very expensive book as is not helpful at all!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for any nurse practitioner
I had the pleasure of reading this book while finishing my last year in nurse practitioner school.

Ms. Buppert is a master in defining how to negotiate business contracts.

I met the author at a nurse practioner conference in Nashville Tn and she was very down to earth and truly magnificent in her knowledge of laws affecting nurse practioners.

    I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative, helpful
This book is a great way to access state-by-state information related to NP practice. I do recommend that readers not solely rely on its information. They should still contact each state's board of nursing. I found discrepancies between Ms. Buppert's requirements for practice in Ohio and actual law.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to both NP students and clinicians. ... Read more

Pozgar's book is organized by legal topic and cites relevant case law in all instances. It is an excellent overview of American law as it applies to the health care practitioner or organization. He has taken a topic that it difficult to communicate and made it very enjoyable reading. Students will find it much easier reading than most graduate level texts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great information for those new to health care law.
This book was very useful to me. I am a health information management student planning to enter a graduate health administration program. I took the class and this particular book was the text. Book Description

Medical mistakes are occurring with alarming frequency in this country. Nightly newscasts and daily newspapers tell of botched surgeries, mistaken patient identities, careless overdoses, and neglected diagnoses. You may have dismissed these stories as unfortunate mistakes, misunderstandings, or just isolated incidents with the occasional bad doctor.Wall of Silence reveals that these medical mistakes are not rare incidents. In fact, the real-life stories in this book show that medical mistakes increasing in frequency-and worse, that the system is designed more to cover up these errors than prevent them. With searing outrage and heartfelt compassion for the victims of medical mistakes, Gibson and Singh put human faces to the tragic numbers we read and hear about.Within these pages, you'll meet:

    · An eight-year-old girl whose cries of pain from kidney cancer were dismissed by doctors, eventually leading to her permanent paralysis

·A rising young star in the federal government whose elective surgery has left him in unrelenting excruciating pain and unable to continue his

    promising career

·A retired store manager whose botched colonoscopy resulted in a raging infection that nearly killed him

·A widower whose wife died from a cancer that was spotted four years before her death-but never treated Wall of Silence goes behind the scenes to expose how medical mistakes plague the entire health care system, including:

    · How the "old-boy network" of physicians works to keep irresponsible doctors practicing on-and harming-unsuspecting patients

    · How the tribal culture of hospital hierarchy among nurses, doctors, and technicians fosters dangerous-and sometimes fatal-miscommunication

    about individual patients' treatment

    · How sleep-deprived doctors-in-training, who routinely work 95 -hour weeks, endanger the lives of patients under their supervision Hospitals, insurance companies, HMOs, state medical boards, and medical associations also come under fire for turning a deaf ear to the claims of innocent victims and their families. Gibson and Singh shed light on the intimidation and other punishing tactics these bodies use to maintain the Wall of Silence. Wall of Silence is required reading for everyone who uses the health care system in America. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars must read for medical professionals
This book opens your eyes to the importance of being your own advocate for your health care. Do not consider Doctors as the GODS they like to think they are. They make mistakes that take lives or leave permanent damage. This does not mean all doctors. But if insurance companies were not run by doctors the bad doctors would have been run off a long time ago and the good doctors insurance rates would not be high. This book tells it all and should be read by everyone who might someday need the the care of the medical profession.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wall of Silence
The Wall of Silence by Rosemary Gibson, is a MUST READ for all comsumers. I say all comsumers because all of us are subject to being the receipent of health care in our life time. As a retired Registered Nurse and also twice a victim of medical negligence, I encourage everyone to read this book of great information about how the medical system functions and how you can protect yourself and your family. Ms. Gibson cites enough examples of the horrendous things which can happen to any of us for the reader to understand how we must all change our "looking to the Gods in White" to being our own advocate for ourselves and our families. With 100,000 people dying every year from medical negligence, it is time we all scream at the top of our lungs to our legislators to make safe health care a number one prioity. Buy your own copy and one for a friend and don't re-sell them. Keep your copy for frequent reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truth be told
This book is a well researched, well written must read for all Americans. The authors share their personal story as well as the stories of others who have suffered at the hands of a careless physician. While the stories will break your heart, they may also save your life, or the life of someone you love. While none of us want to believe that those we trust with our bodies and our lives would neglect a sacred trust, the fact is it is happening all too often. This book delivers the message without hype, fear or hysteria. Read it, share it and take it with you.

5-0 out of 5 stars First do no harm
If even one person dies, that is one too many. But it is not just one, not even 10 or 100 patients who are maimed and dying from health care mistakes. As Gibson and Singh reveal, the numbers are much much higher than that. And anyone of them could be you or your loved ones. Medical errors do not discriminate. Everyone is vulnerable even doctors themselves as patients.

Yes, to error is human but that really doesn't appear to be the problem here. A great deal of the problem appears to be that a percentage of health care providers make multiple errors because no one stops them. According to Grayson and Singh many nurses do not recommend their place of employment to their family and friends.

When people are not held accountable for their actions and the consequences of those actions everyone is endangered. Taking or being forced to take personal responsiblity for your actions and their consequences plays a large part in how many mistakes you make.

I would think it would be every irresponsible health care provider's nightmare to literally have to personally experience everything that they inflict on their patients.

Since health care providers are safe from the magic wishing wand, the next best thing is to guard against such mistakes and be public with the information. It is a matter of ethics. When you are ten and don't want to "rat out" a buddy it is rarely life or death. But health care providers are not ten anymore and it is their ethical obligation to put the safety their patients or potential patients first. Please read this book and tell others about it. All of our lives depend on it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dying for Safety and Accountability
What separates Wall of Silence by Gibson and Singh from other books on this topic is the refreshing and bold truth telling contained within it's human stories of pain, injustice and frustration. Not only did the authors shoulder the risks and courage requisite for listening to and then writing about the human face, consequences and devastation of needless medical error tragedies, but they also ferreted out and exposed the ugly truths, told by medical providers themselves, about how the pervasive greed, secrecy and code of silence in the healthcare industry works to bury medical mistakes through a host of means; including blackballing and burying the careers of the competent and ethical medical providers who dare to tell the truth and who place patients above profits. As a medical provider, I can find no better way to encapsulate the meaning and hope of this treatise than through those words offered by the Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter. This book is, as she states, 'A call to arms for families who have had loved ones disabled or die in the pursuit of medical treatment.' And, I can only hope that it could also catalyze a 'Call to Arms' for medical providers who wish to return medicine and healthcare to the patient oriented, compassionate, ethical and hippocratic way of practice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book was my Bible
This book was my Bible as I went through my divorce. I referred to numerous times, as it provided me with invaluable information on the process of divorce and custody. This book, which is written by a lawyer, is packed with practical advice on surviving a divorce. It covered every aspect of the process, such as, dealing with your emotions, choosing a lawyer, creating a custody agreement, what to expect in court, and dealing with your new single life with your children. This book is an absolute "must read" for any woman who is going through the process of a divorce or a custody battle.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential resource for anyone in the divorce process.
What Every Woman Should Know About Divorce and Custody by Gayle Rosenwald Smith, J.D. and Sally Abrahms, is an essential resource for women in the process of going through a divorce, as well as for those contemplating divorce and even post-divorce, when custody and child support issues continue to resurface. It tells it like it is, in a clear, concise manner. This book will be a real eye-opener to those entering the process, and provide new insights to those immersed in, and even theoretically beyond the process. Many lawyers treat the divorce process like an on-going game, which the legal system enables. This process can victimize women, in particular. The best defense a woman can have is to be well-informed and well-prepared for the battle, which many (ex)spouses choose to wage. Every woman involved in a divorce, regardless of her lawyers ability and reputation, owes it to herself to become educated about the process, the potential problems, and helpful strategies. That is the essence of What Every Woman Should Know About Divorce and Custody offers. If there is one book that a woman going through a divorce needs, this is it. This book will likely become a repeatedly consulted reference throughout most womens divorce and custody process.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Every Woman Should Know About Divorce And Cusody
This is the most thorough and informative book on divorce issues that I have read. As a divorce attorney, I am always curious to know what other attorneys are thinking. Ms. Smith's perspective and commentary mirror much of my own experiences and conclusions. The book is easy to read and filled with relevant, realistic examples and practical advice. I highly recommend this book to both nonlawyers, who have a reason to learn about this subject and to lawyers so they can refine and expand their knowedge of the divorce process.

    Book Description

"Children's rights": the phrase has been a legal battle cry for twenty-five years. But as this provocative book by a nationally renowned expert on children's legal standing argues, it is neither possible nor desirable to isolate children from the interests of their parents, or those of society as a whole.

From foster care to adoption to visitation rights and beyond, Martin Guggenheim offers a trenchant analysis of the most significant debates in the children's rights movement, particularly those that treat children's interests as antagonistic to those of their parents. Guggenheim argues that "children's rights" can serve as a screen for the interests of adults, who may have more to gain than the children for whom they claim to speak. More important, this book suggests that children's interests are not the only ones or the primary ones to which adults should attend, and that a "best interests of the child" standard often fails as a meaningful test for determining how best to decide disputes about children.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for any Legal Nurse Consultant
Marketing is, by far, the hardest and scariest part of starting a Legal Nurse Consulting business. This book takes all of the key ideas in marketing, and organizes them in a consise, basic, and reader-friendly format. Though the marketing strategies are not any big new revelations, the organization of the book itself and the flow of strategies makes it unique from any other marketing books I have read. While the context of the book is an invaluable resource, the text is light, humorous and very easy to follow and understand. It is, if it is used as it was written, a roadmap to a successful and profitable Legal Nurse Consultant business. I highly recommend this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for all LNCs regardless of business experience
Betty and John Joos have created THE BEST marketing book for Legal Nurse Consultants ever written! The book is an easy read packed with real-life answers to real-life marketing questions. It is a practical approach to what really works, coupled with humor. Unbeknownst to them, they have become my business partners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every LNC should have this book!!
Marketing for the Legal Nurse Consultant is the most valuable book in my library! The Joos' walk LNCs through the world of marketing with ease. I've been lucky enough to have met these fine people in person and attended their marketing seminars. Here again, this is a "must do" for the independent legal nurse consultant. My cards and brochures went through major overhauls with their help and my business has prospered! Thank you both, John and Betty, for all you do! I'm looking forward to purchasing your next edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Answers to your LNC marketing questions
All the accolades that have been written about the Joos' book are true! This little jewel of a book is one I know I will keep referring back to in the years to come. The marketing plan and suggestions are aimed specifically at legal nurses which makes everything in this book usable and practical. "Marketing for the LNC" is an invaluable source of information not only for nurses at the early stages of setting up a new consulting business but also for those that have been at it for awhile and are wanting to expand. Betty writes as one who has an understanding of the fears that most nurses experience who are marketing themselves for the first time. This is one of those "must have" books for "newbies" and seasoned LNC's. It explains what is needed to promote yourself and explains how to effectively do so in a professional manner without spending a small fortune. After reading this book, marketing started to feel like less of a necessary evil; although it's still not my favorite way to spend my non-billable hours....I now have a much clearer idea of the message I want to send to my prospective attorney-clients and I have the tools to help me get my message across.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for the beginning LNC...
This book takes one of the most difficult parts of the LNC business and breaks it down into simple and concise steps. From the initial, terrifying (yet neccessary) phone calls, to keeping your clients long-term...this book is invaluable. It's an "easy read" and I find myself referring to it frequently as a resource because of all the helpful tips it contains. Great job Betty and John! ... Read more

    Book Description

Why do people lie, and how can lies be detected? There is now a substantial psychological literature relating to these fundamental questions, and this book reviews the relevant knowledge in detail, before focusing on guidelines for best practice in detecting deception. Psychological research is now available on individual differences in lying behaviour (gender differences, age differences and personality). There is also interesting research evidence of the ways in which deception is reflected both in real objective non-verbal behaviour and also in the perceived non-verbal cues which can help or mislead the observer in detecting deception. Although the book does include a major survey of the physiological aspects of deception and the polygraph as a method of detection, it also includes a thorough review of current knowledge of content analysis and validity assessment of speech and written statements. The book ends by discussing how professionals can improve lie detection by focusing on key aspects of the behaviour of the liar and by awareness and control of their own behaviour.

    • Covers all three aspects of deception—non-verbal cues, speech and written statement analysis, and physiological responses
    • Focuses on the behaviour and perceptions of the observer which can hinder the process of detection
    • Based on the authors expert review of the research and evidence, and on his practical experience and connections with several police forces
"Without doubt, this book is the most important contribution to research and practice in lie detection to be published in years. For the first time research about verbal, nonverbal and physiological correlates of truth telling and deception are reviewed comprehensively in one text. This book will benefit those who have to decide whether people are telling the truth or lying, because it both reviews contemporary research and provides practical guidelines." 5-0 out of 5 stars Detecting Lies & Deceipt
I found this book to the most informative and useful reference of all those I have read regarding the subject and techniques relating to detecting deception by means of statement analysis in it's various forms. Easy to read. Easy to understand. It will remain a guide to forensic investigators, polygraphists and the like for many years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent survey of psychological literature on deception
This is an extraordinary book, a well-written and clear survey of the psychological literature on deception written by one of the leaders in the field. Extremely thorough, and although sophisticated enough for professionals it is nevertheless useful for students and non-psychologists. As a lawyer and academic who writes on psychology and the law, I found it enormously helpful in preparing an article on the admissibility of expert testimony on lie-detection techniques. Having written on the subject before, and being more adept at legal rather than psychological research, I was thrilled to find such a clear and thorough collection of sources and commentary on the myriad social science research on lie-detection, and have already used the book's index to locate and look up numerous studies with which I was previously unfamiliar.

This book was very helpful on the psycholgy and tell tale signs of lies. One of the most informative and straight forward books that I have read on the subject.I would definitely recomend this to anyone intested in the psycholgy aspect of lies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very well put together.
I bought this book post divorce, a mistake equivalent to waiting until after a bad operation to check out your doctor's credentials with the AMA or state medical board.

It hardly needs be said that as far as life altering events go, both marriage and divorce present potential short/long term repercussions. To move into either of these arenas without having first educated yourself to the negative implications is probably the most common mistake made in our society today.

Still, while the typical no-fault divorce in a joint property jurisdiction is a cut and dry event, there are areas - emotional, intellectual, and financial, that you need to explore in advance and this book can help you to accomplish that. Even if there are painful or unresolved issues that linger after the decree is final, you can gain insights here as to legal strategies that may help, or other practical guidance if acceptance is the only option.

Unlike some of the other books I've read on this subject, "Your Divorce Advisor" does not appear to have a gender bias or other transparent agendas. Working together, Mercer and Pruett help you to gain a bit of distance from your own situation, while offering objective advice toward gaining fair and effective closure.

This book does a fine job of capturing the circumstances that I imagine might be faced by 90% of all respondents. Even if you have a very unusual situation, the general advice available here is valuable. I had particular concerns when I bought the book, and I found viable answers and explanations contained therein. They may not have been what I was hoping for, but as the basic theme of this book expounds, getting realistic about divorce and its aftermath is step one in the mutli-part process of a successful separation.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Book Does It All
I bought this book after reading 5 or 6 other books, and none of those other books covered divorce from start to finish as well as this one did. From the finances to figuring out whether you're emotionally ready to deal with the issues, I found it really helpful. Definitely worth the price. I even lent it to my lawyer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Divorce Book on Market
This is absolutely, positively the best divorce book on the market, and I've read them all! I'm a divorce lawyer from Lexington, KY and thought I'd write a book on divorce that would help clients with both the emotional and the legal process....and then I found Your Divorce Advisor. There's no more thorough treatment of the subject anywhere else. I actually bought a case of these books to give to clients. I can't recommend it more highly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good as far as it goes
I found the combination of interweaving comments from an attorney and a psychologist to be very effective and was very encouraged as I began reading. As I progressed, however, I became somewhat disappointed for several different reasons and these reasons may not apply to other people (so take my rating with a grain of salt). First, a huge proportion of the book is dedicated to issues of childcare and child custody so for those of us without children, it's as if we bought a book that only has 60% of its content directed towards us. In this light, I thought that some of the financial issues were shortchanged a bit. Second, it seemed like a disproportionate amount of the material was directed specifically (or at least primarily) towards wives. Finally, I would have liked to have seen more attention paid to situations where there may be substantial issues of emotional problems and/or mental illness. Those exceptions aside, though, I thought this was a very well-done book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your Divorce Advisor
Don't leave home without this book. The multifarious problems, challenges &legalities an individual faces before the pen hits the paper is enough to paralize the strongest. During the divorce process the client feels overwhelmed trying to take on the whole picture and can't focus. They have more questions than answers. This book is 24 hour help written in plain english. A must before Calling your attorney or therapist. Barbara Holstein a court advocate NH. ... Read more

    Book Description

Considered the definitive resource and text on forensic psychiatry and psychology since the publication of the first edition, Psychological Evaluations for the Courts, Second Edition, continues to be the most comprehensive discussion of legal, research, and clinical issues for both mental health and legal professionals. Fully revised and updated, the volume covers a broad range of topics in forensic mental health, including insanity, child abuse, sentencing, personal injury claims, and civil commitment. Less traditional subjects such as federal antidiscrimination and entitlement laws, competency to testify, workers' compensation, and a new section on the clinical evaluation of witness credibility have also been added. Throughout, the authors summarize and analyze legal issues, offer suggestions for evaluation procedures, and review appropriate research on both clinical opinions and the legal process.

    New to the Second Edition

Completely updated to reflect current research and practice, the volume contains four entirely new chapters and has been revised throughout to include analyses of new case law and clinical techniques; important research on competency and dangerousness from the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Mental Health and Law; and new ethical rules developed by the American Psychological Assocation and the American Psychiatric Association. Also new to this edition are exercises and case studies for students in each chapter (see below).

    4-0 out of 5 stars Journeyman's Opinion
Excellent reference, but a little outdated as of this writing (Dec. 2001). Opinions and recommendations of the authors do not in all respects reflect the majority, or even the respectible minority, of forensic psychologists and psychiatrists. Nonetheless, an excellent reference to have in your library to get the overall gist of an issue or a topic at the interface of psychology and the law. Detailed information pertaining to actual practices will need to be located elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Breed
I have used this book extensively both as teacher and practitioner for years and it remains the best available text for mental health professionals conducting evaluations for the legal system. It is also an outstanding reference for attorneys litigating mental health issues. Its greatest strength is in the criminal law area, but it is excellent in other areas of the law/mental health interface as well. Psychiatrists should not be deterred by the term "psychological" in the title; it is equally applicable to both disciplines.

4-0 out of 5 stars Expertly done survey of the area with practical applications
If you buy only one book to gain an introduction, or update on the area of forensic psychology, this must be it. The authors have gathered legal precedent, research, illustration, and opinion, while retaining readability. It is long - especially with double column pages - but well worth it. An added feature is that the authors, through the publisher, maintain a web site for periodic updates to the book and relevent case law. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars must read for men
This book should be required reading for all males age 18-40 who are either contemplating getting married or making the mistake of getting married again. One must move beyond the shallow male vs female argument and focus on how marriage, while never being in mens interests, is now more than ever just a temporary business arrangement that should be avoided at all costs. This book will reinforce that modern independent males are powerless against the perverted religious and biased government interests that perpetuate the institution of marriage. Read it - then join the national mens marriage boycott.

1-0 out of 5 stars How to Lie, Steal, Cheat, Imprison, & Self-Justify it
This book is sick folks. There is endless self-justification and moral relativism here. Asking if you are "not getting enough attention" or "if you are bored"
and the blaming the person they are married to for every unhappiness the woman has. The book tells you how to find ALL of the man's money but how to HIDE the woman's. It tells how to pretend that this is a loving relation ship and then stab a man in the back. Pre-nup: a MUTALLY agreed upon set of rules that was entered into consentually by both people... and this book tells how to ignore them. Can men therefore ignore vows of marraige and just leave? Framing a man for Domestic Violence or Rape? Women always claim women don't lie about that kind of thing, hmmm, guess that cover story is gone now. Using CHILDREN for more money and teaching them to hate?! Ummmm, why should a child live with such sick person who thinks this way? If this is how American women think today, no wonder that American men are marrying Asian and eastern European brides. Don't blame the men, look in the mirror and at the reviews (by women) of this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dont they already have a sure win??
Come on now are books like this really neccessary anymore for women? The feminazis have already made sure that women have an unfair upper hand when it comes to the courts and can get away with making false accusations of abuse or even "marital rape" in divorce court. The chances are the only reason that the scumbag bottom feeding divorce lawyer wrote this book is so that women realize how good of a lawyer (or rather how much of a slimeball) he is and get his service in court. Its a shame when a man writes a book to further the feminist agenda of rationalized greed & hatred.

    5-0 out of 5 stars There's A Thin Line Between Love & Hate !
All Men would Hate This book...but if your husband lied,cheated,stole,abused....etc.He should deserve whatever wrong you may do him afterwards....Payback Time for all women who have been through [a trip]in their marriage. Eye For an Eye...if he did you wrong...doesn't matter if what you do him in return is wrong....This book can be an extreme help!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Desperate times call for desperate measures
While I shudder at the complete lack of ethics in this book, this advice is invaluable to wives whose husbands are abusive, controlling, and out to destroy them in the event of a divorce. Let's face it: As much as it compromises one's principles, you cannot afford to play fair if doing so means your ex-husband will abuse you, steal the kids and hurt them, leave you penniless/on the streets, and get away with it. ...
