3-0 out of 5 stars Typical philosophy
Once feature of this book that is always fascinating is that one can take any paragraph in it and generate a plethora of ideas and commentary, that might even fill volumes. This book is not unique in that regard, but in fact most books of philosophy have this characteristic. They allow the mind to go forth untamed and engage in speculations that are unconstrained by experience or laboratory experiments. Philosophical reasoning is to be distinguished therefore by its freedom to say and write what it pleases, unlike the case for scientific reasoning, which is highly constrained by observation and experiment. There are some interesting points made in this book, some of them having intersection with what is now going on in artificial intelligence, computational grammar, and linguistics. Readers can also gain insight into the school of logical atomism, which the author was of course very much a part of.

The book is organized as a collection of disjointed paragraphs, which little or no correlation between them. Many of them are quite interesting and thought-provoking, especially if read in the context of the field of artificial intelligence. It is doubtful though that any of these ideas could be refined in such a way as to make them useful in the goal of building thinking machines. They are just too loosely structured to be codified in a language that would run on a machine. Speculative ideas unfortunately are like that. The ideas in the book might perhaps though put one in a certain frame of mind that would permit more acceptance of various claims made in artificial intelligence. Conversely, it might very well increase the doubt on those claims. Such is the nature of philosophical grammar: its expressive power and rich information content permits a wide range of interpretations.

Book Description

This new dictionary provides a ready reference to essential terms and phrases used in all areas of law and business, including accounting, banking, civil law, civil procedure, contracts, corporate law, criminal law, criminal procedure, economics, intellectual property, labor law, real property, secured transactions, securities law, and torts. Written by an American attorney who is also an accredited translator, it provides complete coverage of terminology used in all Spanish-speaking countries, not just those countries where the other bilingual dictionaries on the market were written (i.e., Spain and Argentina). Accordingly, it is the only source for translations of terms that are unique to countries such as Colombia, Peru and Venezuela. The dictionary was thoroughly researched using original documents and monolingual dictionaries from the Spanish-speaking various countries and is thus authoritative and up-to-date. No lawyer or translator who works with Spanish legal and business documents can afford to be without it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A dictionary like none other
I have used many Spanish-English legal dictionaries, but never have I found a book as useful as this one. Unlike the others, this dictionary includes explanations of many of the terms. If you're trying to figure what the difference is between an "embargo" and "secuestro," this book will explain it to you. If you're translating a "sentencia," you can look up that word in this dictionary, and it tells you about the four parts of a "sentencia" in a Spanish-speaking country. The other thing that is completely different about this book is that it contains terms from Guatemala, Peru, El Salvador, Bolivia, Chile, etc.--in other words, terms from all the countries that a dictionary from Argentina is not going to include (because they don't turn up in Argentine documents). In short, if I could only have ONE Spanish-English legal dictionary, this would be it!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Resource for Translating Spanish Legal Document
Tom West brings his expertise as a translator and attorney together to produce this excellent resource. Focussing on difficult legal and commercial terminology, his translations are accurate and correspond to actual usage among the U.S. legal community. I have found this dictionary particularly useful for translating jurisprudence and court decisions from Spanish to English. Mr. West identifies several country-specific terms. In addition, he often includes information on the type of context in which a term is used and/or gives an explanation of the legal concept behind the term. For example, the dictionary explains the difference between "good offices" and "mediation." So if you're trying to understand what a "decreto exento" means in Chile or what the term "decretar pruebas" means in Colombia, or if you're looking for a way to say "casación" in English and make sense to an American lawyer, this is the book that has the answers. Mr. West's dictionary is designed as a supplementary reference work for high-level, experienced legal translators in the Spanish to English combination. If you fit that category, his book is a real treasure.

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of your money
This book is most useful if you are only looking to translate Spanish to English (about 225 pages). But do not get this book if you need English to Spanish translations (about 70 pages). This section is very limited. And I mean VERY limited. Most of the legal terms, even the most basic ones, weren't there, and I did find them in my regular English/Spanish dictionary.

I wish I had read the review from St. George before purchasing it. But I got this book a while ago, and after repeated, frustraing times looking up words I decided to go ahead and write a review.

2-0 out of 5 stars A very limited Spanish / English Dictionary
As you will note from the reviews that follow, this is a good Spanish - English Dictionary IF YOU ARE TRANSLATING FROM SPANISH INTO ENGLISH; it is not so good if you are translating from English to Spanish. Being a lawyer who speaks Spanish, I occasionaly have Spanish clients, and I need to come up with a Spanish word for a legal term I am aware of in English. I read the other reviews before purchasing this Spanish-English dictionary. I, finally, put forth the $75 to purchase it. When I received it, I decided to look up the Spanish word for "Judge" - to see if I was using the right term (is it "Juez" or "Juzgado"). I turned to the page for "J" and, low and behold, THERE WAS NO WORD FOR "JUDGE"! IT WASN'T EVEN LISTED! I turned to the Spanish section and found "Juez" - which was listed as "Judge"; also, I found "Juzgador" - which was listed as "Judge." (I discovered that "Jugado" is "Court" - rather than "Judge" as I had presumed.) I realized that this book wasn't going to work for me - having to translate FROM English INTO Spanish. On the other hand, I recently had to translate a Spanish Adoption record into English. There were Spanish legal phrases which, after several hours of using my regular (Non-legal) Spanish/English dictionary, I was able to deduce the equivilant legal phrases in English. Well, this dictionary probably would have been useful. As the author notes in his preface: "Because my research focused on Spanish-language materials, my original intent had been not to include an English-to-Spanish section at all." He, then, notes that he decided to include a (VERY LIMITED and relatively small) English-to-Spanish section. So, if you are translating FROM Spanish INTO English, this dictionary will probably be useful; however, if you are trying to translate FROM English INTO Spanish, I suggest you try another Spanish/English Dictionary. (I'll probably return this one and get my $75 back.)

5-0 out of 5 stars A desktop companion for transnational practice
Mr. West's Spanish-English Dictionary of Law and Business lives up to the promise on the dust jacket. It IS a must for any lawyer or translator who works with legal and business documents in Spanish. In carefully chosen entries and bracketed explanatory notes Mr. West anticipates potential snares in usage and cultural anomalies-between civil and common law and among civil law jurisdictions. Having tested it in my transnational practice in Mexico, I found it a more current reference than my dog-eared Sell's COMPREHENSIVE SPECIALIST'S DICTIONARY (1957) and more thorough than any of my Spanish-English legal dictionaries that are still in print. It beat out Robb's DICCIONARIO DE TÉRMINOS LEGALES (1991) for the spot on my credenza between and the DICCIONARIO JURÍDICO MEXICANO (1992) and my Bryan A. Garner collection. ... Read more

"International Applications of U.S. Income Tax Law is an excellent addition to the international taxation literature. The book deals with an extremely important and complex area, and does an excellent job of making it understandable. Larkins provides an overview of the issues, a discussion of inbound and outbound transactions, and a discussion of major areas of concern in international taxation. The book also provides numerous tax planning and tax policy perspectives. International Applications of U.S. Income Tax Law is unique from other books in this area because it contains numerous examples, marginal tax rate analysis when applicable, and links to empirical studies involving issues in international taxation. It is an excellent text but also an excellent reference book."

5-0 out of 5 stars Unsung hero?
This book was recommended to me by a friend and I am impressed. This bookis an unsung hero. I guess that is because the author doesn't write a bunch of reviews and guides which are solely set up as informercials to push his overhyped book which isn't that good, I've seen it.

How to Form Your Own S-Corporation and Avoid Double Taxation is a real winner and will tell you what you want to know. Two other good books include Small Business Start-Up Kit: S-Corporations by Dan Sitarz and How To Start Your Own "S" Corporation by Robert A. Cooke. I also recommend The Small Business Legal Kit and Form Your Own Corporation and Launch A Business in Any State by J.W.Dicks.

Good luck with your business.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but...
I read this to get an idea of the steps to take in setting up my own S corporation. While this does take you through the steps of incorporating in Delaware, it reads more like an infomercial. The author has a business set up to incorporate you in Delaware, and will do it cheaper than his competitors, says the book. However, it is not very helpful if you want to incorporate in any other state.

This book is geared towards people in the legal profession. 5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny.
Get the book, read it twice and avoid the time, expense and aggravation of a probate. Having gone through a probate, I can tell you that this is something you want to avoid.

Mary Randolph does an excellent jobs of giving you simple techniques that let you bypass most or all of the probate process.

Again, the book is worth the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy reference guide, but not a sit down and read book
While this book is not on my required reading list on my web site, it is still a very handy reference guide to have on hand. This is not a book that I sat down and read all the way through, and I doubt that many other people would also. It is a HUGE book! This is a good book to have on hand when you need to look up something specific about the music business, and is much easier to read and use than "This Business Of Music". I still highly recommend the Donald Passman book as the first book that anyone looking for success in the music business should read, because it is a book that you can sit down and read (although it's also probably too big to read in one sitting).

Book Description

A simple, straightforward guide to the ins and outs of the modern patent process

In the information age, intellectual property is often as valuable as––if not more valuable than––any physical asset a company or an entrepreneur can possess. But protecting your intellectual property is vitally important to your future success, no matter how brilliant your idea.

Large businesses and corporations typically have their own patent attorneys to deal with intellectual property issues–– a luxury most small businesses and entrepreneurs can’t afford. If you have intellectual property to protect, but you lack the resources of a major company, then The Patent Process is for you. Written for individuals, entrepreneurs, and small companies, it provides readers with a solid introduction to patents and other forms of intellectual property, without becoming exhaustive and overly complicated. It clearly and concisely explains the things you need to know to understand the patent process and make it work for you. It features an overview of the history and the primary issues in intellectual property, as well as a section that answers common questions about the patent process. Illustrative case studies are included to highlight important issues, such as:

  • Patents, copyrights, and trademarks–– what they are, what they do, and which one you need to protect your intellectual property
  • The application process for patents, trademarks, and copyrights
  • Foreign patents–– protecting your intellectual property abroad
  • The financing, licensing, and sale of patents
  • Trade secrets and how they differ from patents

Creators of intellectual property want to focus on what they do best–– create and innovate ––rather than deal with the technicalities of patents and copyrights. The Patent Process offers an in-depth treatment of the core issues in intellectual property designed to help individuals protect their ideas and navigate the system to best effect. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Patents for entrepreneurs
One of the wonderful features of this book is in how it shows readers that it's the simple things they come up with, usually based on their own experience or expertise, that can be turned into the greatest success with a patent. You don't need to be a rocket scientist, just a guy like me who comes up with a better way to do something. The case studies were particularly helpful, ranging from profiles of a dot-com company with business method patents to a barbecue joint that has a sauce as a trade secret. I never thought I'd see a book written by a college professor that's actually interesting to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth reading even if you don't need a patent!
Who knew patents and intellectual property could be so interesting to read about? The examples of patents in here, like the method for preserving the dead, are a blast - and really serve to teach you something. You'll love the case studies, too. For those seeking patents, trademarks, trade secrets, or copyrights, what you need to know is laid right out. Other books on these subjects put you to sleep, this one is cool! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars TRULY a desk reference on 19 federal employment laws.
The first thing I worried about after incorporating my business and before hiring my first employees was all the employment laws I had to follow. I had been warned that there are many laws that I need to comply with proactively to ensure minimal problems in the future. I knew that starting a small business and making it succeed would be very hard and I didn't want to make it any harder by leaving myself open to legal liabilities. I originally had to look through several references trying to understand all the different employment laws till Nolo released this book last year and I felt a huge relief.

This book contains hundreds of pages of information that is very nicely organized. Here's why - there are 19 federal employment laws covered in this book (a chapter for each law) and the best chapter is the introductory chapter that explains how to use the book! It addresses the need of how to figure out which of the 19 federal employment laws apply in your business situation. It outlines the process you need to follow to establish this. This was one of the most difficult things for me. After reading this section, I systematically followed the instructions for each law and came up with a chart that uniquely applies to my business. It doesn't take more than a few hours to do this.

Each chapter also has selected portions of the actual law. The way you can distinguish the main chapter from these sections on the actual law is the smaller print. The only complaint I have against this book is the very small print used in printing these selected portions. Recently Nolo went from large books to small books (same material, just smaller font) and they didn't account for the smaller font becoming really small during this conversion! So if possible, look for the original larger books unless you have excellent vision and don't mind reading such small print. I guess Nolo took the old adage 'don't forget to read the small print' literally :-)

But seriously, this book is just fantastic. Each chapter is split into various meaningful sections. For example - there is the section on definitions, an overview section, an enforcement section, a section for employers, and a section for employees. There are also sections on the agencies charged with enforcement and compliance, and the state laws relating to the subject. These sections are further divided into record keeping tips, penalties, practical tips, etc.

This book keeps in mind the practical aspects of the law as applicable to the reader. It is saving us thousands of dollars that we might have had to spend otherwise in gaining the necessary knowledge of the various employment laws. By the way, there are also references in each chapter on where to obtain the relevant forms. In the past, I had spent countless hours trying to figure out where I could find the forms to download (it took a long time even with Google's help). But with this book's help, I spend just a few minutes to find these forms!

As usual, Nolo explains everything in plain English so you don't need a legal background to understand the law. This book is meant for both employees as well as employers. Pick up a copy of this book if you need any kind of information regarding employment law and you won't regret it. We haven't so good luck! ... Read more
