5-0 out of 5 stars Easy, clear and fun
Not only is the book easy to read and understand, but the author has a sense of humor and history. There are facts salted into the usually amusing examples that, at least to me, seem to relate to past events. For example, when he explains partnerships, the sample of an agreement is for a partnership called Leaks Anonymous. It is a plumbing business and the partners are Glenda Liddy, Eduardo Hunt and, ____ McCord... I think from the Watergate burglary.
Anyway, the book gave common sense advice and was really useful.I recommend it highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rabbi Trust
Your a teacher and don't know what a Rabbi Trust is? Shame on you. Look it up and learn it and stop thinking everyone is Anti-Semitic. As a Jewish man I take offense to your comment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Shilling's Text is Jam Packed
I am using this book for a master's level personnel law course. It covers all the topics quite thoroughly. It might be useful as a quick selective reference tool for HR administrators unfamiliar with one or more of the specialty areas. Some chapters (such as the one on benefits and the one on pensions) might benefit from another look at organization of the material. However, most of the information is accurate, if necessarily streamlined in many areas. Since personnel law now covers several deeply specialized areas, this is not surprising.

Stylistically, the book's sentences are jam-packed with information. This might prove difficult reading for some. In a few cases, a series of issues will be "hidden" by a single sentence that is oversimplified, but this is apparent only to a reader who is familiar with the field. The advantage is that the author has made a very creditable attempt to address all the issues. The author generally avoids drawing temporal or one-sided conclusions, which may mislead in a field that is fraught with disputes. I appreciate the even-handedness of this approach.

One small but annoying detail. On page 220 is a reference to a "rabbi trust". I took offense at the use of this term in the book, without quotation marks. I think later editions should avoid or explain the use of language which is apparently bigoted. In fact, I will recommend that my students not use this term because I can offer no good explanation for its continuance. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality
I have the 10th edition of this book. I'm studying it now for the Series 65 and find myself cursing every 3rd page or so. There are multiple typos, grammatical errors, and mis-spelled words. Even worse, a lot of the text doesn't make any sense. A subsequent paragraph often contradicts its predecessor, for example. I'm waiting until I finish it to call Dearborn's "help line" with all of my questions. It will probably take an hour to get through all of them. I do not recommend Dearborn's publications and wish that someone would kick them out of this market. Dearborn's editors are welcome to hire me to summarize all of the problems I found with this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Primer for the layman and seasoned professional!
This is an excellent book that I believe can help level the playing field for smaller companies vis-a-vis their larger competitors concerning exploiting the full value of
their intellectual property rights. The authors include a chapter addressed to corporate officers and directors concerning potential liability for mismanaging intellectual property. This chapter alone is an eye-opener that ought to be read by every director and officer not only to avoid liability but to enhance share value. The authors have given the reader a seminal work concerning the difficult nature of patent valuation including a method that uses the Black-Scholes option-pricing algorithm (since a patent's value, like an option, decreases with the passage of time, all other things being equal). The authors discuss the methods utilized to value a patent in a publicly traded company and point out that Eli Lilly lost $35 billion in market capitalization when one of its two Prozac patents was declared invalid for double-patenting, thus, demonstrating the enormous value of that patent. I am a patent attorney who learned much from this book. This is a highly readable and even entertaining book that makes an excellent primer for anyone interested in the business of intellectual property.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and enjoyable reading!
As a quick primer, I found this book to be terrific. And the dry humour was appreciated as well. Never thought I'd make it through so quickly, and yet come away with such a good appreciation of the subject matter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Business Professional from New York
This book took all the mystery out of the complex issue of intellectual property: what it is, how it works, and how it can work for you. Easy to read and comprehensive.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally a Book for Non-Lawyers
This is good for non-lawyers who work in management and have no idea what IP means, nor how to make this form of property benefit (or not harm) your company.

This book whet my appetite for more details. I would recommend this book for anyone who needs a crash course in IP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great primer for IP newbies!
This book gives the reader a good idea of the legal and financial implications of intellectual property management, without resorting to excessive "legalese." It is well-written and often even witty, with a friendly tone that makes complex material that much more accessible. IP is not just for patent attorneys anymore! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Intermediate Book on the Market
This is the book you should purchase to learn classical intermediate economics if you plan to go to graduate school in economics. You will need calculus, but if you want to learn 'real' microeconomics, calculus is indispensable. Competing texts are too mathematically infantile to be of much use. This text is very worthwhile for self-study because solutions are given to half of the end-of-the-chapter problems.

A relatively mathematically sophisticated student should be able to go through the book on their own. After you've done this, you will be well on your way to possessing the 'intuition' as well as the 'basic' mathematical underpinnings needed at the graduate level.

As others have mentioned, the book is relatively light on game theory. Other texts will be necessary (Binmore, etc.) for learning this topic at the advanced undergraduate level.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent intermediate book
This is a very good book for someone that wants a thorough understanding of intermediate level micro. It presents economics at a level in between Hal Varian's Intermediate Micro, and the far more advanced book by Mas-Colell. It gives a clear introduction to economics using calculus and, unlike other books, Nicholson covers second derivate conditions. This provides additional inights that help understand the more technical Mas-Colell.
Also, the type set and fonts are eye-friendly, and Nicholson is a master at explaning economics in a way that helps you learn it. I recommend this book for the serious student who wants to get ready for graduate level microeconomics courses. By serious, I do not mean only students that are majoring in economics, but also any other student who really wants to learn microeconomics.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best!
At the first glance, this book is elegantly laidout, but mathematically "inadequate". However when you really read it, you find the author is a master in explaining very complicated concepts in an easy way. I am a PhD student, but I learned "economics" from this book. The textbook by Mas-Colell that our professor chose was a disaster. That book was heavy, stinky, and the authors did a bad job in explaining even the simplest ideas. I decided to use the Nicholson's book and understand everything and (only) this book made me love microeconomics.

Lots of economists like to show off their math skills and like to show what a "rocket science" their field (economics) is by applying weird notations and "bad" English. Therefore, they intentionally make simple (maybe sometimes profound) ideas appear as complicate as they can be. Once you waste 1 day's time and undertsand the idea, you yell to yourself, "what a simple thing!". My experience is, spending 3 day's on Mas-Collel's book, I understand a thing, but it only requires 30 minutes if you use Nicholson's book.

I was a physicist before persuing economics. In physics, we regard a good scholar (or someone who really understands what he is talking about) as someone who can explain difficult stuff in easy ways. Otherwise we dont think too much of him/her. In this sense, Nicholson (maybe Varian too) is truly a scientist, a great scholarly master. I am using these great terms because I am very grateful to the author since I truly learned stuff from it and it saved me from the great disappointment in microeconomics inflicted by Mas-Collel's book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book but needs improving
A good textbook providing sufficient coverage of microeconomics with mathematical details. In this edition, it adds some matrix algebra as an extends. However, it seems to be inadequate. And I hope the future edition should includes more and more mathematical technique similar to the Eugene Silberberg's (The Structure of Economics).

5-0 out of 5 stars An everyday book for an economist
When you joined the economics school, and later on, you realized that there are books that you'll use it forever. One of them is Nicholson; used in Canada, US, England, Mexico, etc. is a book that will build up mathematic economists with strong theoretic background. I really enjoyed this book and this course. Thumb up for the book. Thumb down for the price. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellant Book, but......
I read the book and found it very helpful with my plan to form a real estate parnership. I found the examples at the end of each subjet very helpful. However, it seems the authors went to a great length to demonstrate to readers that they are NOT gender biased, to the point where one would find himself sometimes cringing. Their objective could have been attained better by replacing all the He, she, him, her, with "he/she" or "him/her", and let each readers to choose the jender for themselves.

I found this title to be all-encompassing if you're considering entering into a partnership - whether it's an existing partnership or whether you're starting up a new partnership. In fact, I purchased another title on this same topic and I ended up returning it because I didn't see where it covered anything that wasn't already covered in The Partnership Book. I strongly urge anyone considering entering into a partnership to read this book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good as a starter, but you will need more.
Inc for Dummies is not just for dummies, it is a good book on How To Incorporate, but you will need more.

Some additional books icnlude How To Incorporate: A Handbook for Entrpreneurs and Professionals by Michael R. Diamond. How To Incorporate in Any State: Everything You Need to Form a Corporation by W. Dean Brown. S- Corporations by Robert Cooke.

Form Your Own Corporation and Launch a Business in Any State and The Small Business Kit by J.W. Dicks.

Use the dummies book as a starter guide. Use the other books for the real meaty information. Be careful what you buy, the marketplace is proliferated with books by self proclaimed experts who read a lot but have no real world experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book on how to incorporate your business
I bought this book along with Rich Dad's Advisors; Own Your Own Corporation by Garrett Sutton.

Incorporating Your Business for Dummies is a good book for the average reader. This book shows how to protect personal assets, save on taxes, set up your board of directors, conduct meetings and more.

I especially enjoyed the part on how to create tax free medical benefits, pension and retirement plans. Very informative.

For even more information, I recommend "Own Your Own Corporation" by Garrett Sutton and "How To Start a S Corporation" by Robert Cooke.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Incorrect Information
This book is in a word HORRIBLE. Some of this information is dangerous to someone starting up a business because it is incorrect. Unfortunately, the Wiley Dummy series hires low end authors who aren't experts and don't research the topics.

The tax information on how to pay yourself a salary from a Subchapter S corporation is just plain wrong. The authors also fail to point out that if your revenues are over $85,000, you should strongly consider a C corporation. This is advantageous for various reasons, none of which you will find in this waste of a good forest.

2-0 out of 5 stars just the tip of the iceberg
In order to maintain the legal status of your corporation, you need to pass very specific resolutions and keep very specific records. I had hoped for a "cookbook" for setting up my corporation, but this is not it.

The info on corporate structures is very basic - you could easily find this level of detail on the web. The bulk of the book is very general... it mentions what you must do, but doesn't tell you how.

Get the *basics* from your lawyer or accountant, then buy The Corporate Minutes Book by Anothony Mancuso instead of this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for those contemplating a corporation
If you are contemplating starting a business and therefore a corporation, this book is a great first start. As with all of the dummy series books, the authors feel that people reading these books are brand new and know nothing. So this gives even the most naive a good start on how to incorporate.

So much of the information is basic and since the book was written awhile ago, some of the material may be dated. Nonetheless, good first start for business people.

Other good books include How To Start a S-Corporation by Robert Cooke and Brilliant Deductions by Wade Cook. The latter shows a way to drop out of the social security system and offers a good section on Nevada Corporations. ... Read more

Book Description

What effects do laws have? Do individuals drive more cautiously, clear ice from sidewalks more diligently, and commit fewer crimes because of the threat of legal sanctions? Do corporations pollute less, market safer products, and obey contracts to avoid suit? And given the effects of laws, which are socially best? Such questions about the influence and desirability of laws have been investigated by legal scholars and economists in a new, rigorous, and systematic manner since the 1970s. Their approach, which is called economic, is widely considered to be intellectually compelling and to have revolutionized thinking about the law.

In this book Steven Shavell provides an in-depth analysis and synthesis of the economic approach to the building blocks of our legal system, namely, property law, tort law, contract law, and criminal law. He also examines the litigation process as well as welfare economics and morality. Aimed at a broad audience, this book requires neither a legal background nor technical economics or mathematics to understand it. Book Description

"Statistics for Lawyers" is designed to introduce law students, law teachers, practitioneers, and judges to the basic ideas of mathematical probability and statistics as they have been applied in the law.The book consists of sections of exposition followed by real-world cases and case studies in which statistical data have played a role. The reader is asked to apply the theory to the facts, to calculate results (a hand calculator is sufficient), and to explore legal issues raised by quantitative findings. The authors' calculations and comments are given in the back of the book. The cases and case studies reflect a broad variety of legal subjects, including antidiscrimination, mass torts, taxation, school finance, identification evidence, preventive detention, handwriting disputes, voting, environmental protection, antitrust, and the death penalty. The second edition includes many new problems reflecting current developments in the law, including a new chapter on epidemiology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars best law book ever
Some reviewer for a statistics journal called Phil Good's "Applying Statistics in the Courtroom" the best book ever written on statistics and the law. Given the fine books by Finkelstein, by Gastwirth and the deGroot, Feinberg and Kadane book, I think that was a gross overstatement. Phil does however get away from legalese and tries to present key issues.

Finkelstein is a lawyer who with Herbert Robbins helped define what statistical evidence should be. He is well educated in statistics and his first edition was a classic. This book maintains the good features of the first book and provide a nice update with modern advances particularly in genetics. It is an introductory statistics text for lawyers with little or no statistical background and it teaches them the methods utilizing legal cases as examples.

I was very much impressed with the authors' analysis of the Florida vote in the 2000 Presidential election that Finkelstein presented in a talk at the Joint Statistical Meetings in New York in August 2002. I heard the talk and discovered that this meticulous and interesting analysis is covered in the book, section 4.5.3 "Election 2000: Who won Florida?" This detail is typical of the nice interplay between statistical methodology and important legal questions. It is just one example of the gems in this book!

The chapters are 1. Descriptive Statistics, 2. How to Count, 3. Elements of Probability, 4. Some Probability Distributions, 5. Statistical Inference for Two Proportions, 6. Comparing Multiple Proportions, 7. Comparing Means, 8. Combining Evidence Across Independent Strata, 9. Sampling Issues, 10. Epidemiology, 11. Survival Analysis, 12. Nonparametric Methods, 13. Regression Methods, 14. More Complex Regression Models.

With many interesting and famous cases as examples this book is valuable to statisticians like me as well as to attorneys.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference for federal employment laws.
This is an excellent book for general knowledge of the laws which apply to both the employer and the employee. It is well written, reads very easily and would be my choice as a general reference book concerning employment laws. It defines all relavent law terms and, most importantly, provides a guide or reference for additional information about each of the laws governing employment. It should be noted that the book covers federal Laws and not state laws.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of major areas of Employment Law
I found this book extremely helpful. As an executive recruiter (headhunter) it is essential that I have complete knowledge of many areas of employment law, particularly those that deal with hiring and firing. The law can be very complex, and this book explains the most important points relating to employment in a very clear, readable way. I refer to this guide almost daily as a handy reference, and recommend it to any private sector employer or employee.
