Stylistically, the book's sentences are jam-packed with information. This might prove difficult reading for some. In a few cases, a series of issues will be "hidden" by a single sentence that is oversimplified, but this is apparent only to a reader who is familiar with the field. The advantage is that the author has made a very creditable attempt to address all the issues. The author generally avoids drawing temporal or one-sided conclusions, which may mislead in a field that is fraught with disputes. I appreciate the even-handedness of this approach. One small but annoying detail. On page 220 is a reference to a "rabbi trust". I took offense at the use of this term in the book, without quotation marks. I think later editions should avoid or explain the use of language which is apparently bigoted. In fact, I will recommend that my students not use this term because I can offer no good explanation for its continuance. ... Read more

Book Description Reviews (10)
A relatively mathematically sophisticated student should be able to go through the book on their own. After you've done this, you will be well on your way to possessing the 'intuition' as well as the 'basic' mathematical underpinnings needed at the graduate level. As others have mentioned, the book is relatively light on game theory. Other texts will be necessary (Binmore, etc.) for learning this topic at the advanced undergraduate level.
Lots of economists like to show off their math skills and like to show what a "rocket science" their field (economics) is by applying weird notations and "bad" English. Therefore, they intentionally make simple (maybe sometimes profound) ideas appear as complicate as they can be. Once you waste 1 day's time and undertsand the idea, you yell to yourself, "what a simple thing!". My experience is, spending 3 day's on Mas-Collel's book, I understand a thing, but it only requires 30 minutes if you use Nicholson's book. I was a physicist before persuing economics. In physics, we regard a good scholar (or someone who really understands what he is talking about) as someone who can explain difficult stuff in easy ways. Otherwise we dont think too much of him/her. In this sense, Nicholson (maybe Varian too) is truly a scientist, a great scholarly master. I am using these great terms because I am very grateful to the author since I truly learned stuff from it and it saved me from the great disappointment in microeconomics inflicted by Mas-Collel's book.

Some additional books icnlude How To Incorporate: A Handbook for Entrpreneurs and Professionals by Michael R. Diamond. How To Incorporate in Any State: Everything You Need to Form a Corporation by W. Dean Brown. S- Corporations by Robert Cooke. Form Your Own Corporation and Launch a Business in Any State and The Small Business Kit by J.W. Dicks. Use the dummies book as a starter guide. Use the other books for the real meaty information. Be careful what you buy, the marketplace is proliferated with books by self proclaimed experts who read a lot but have no real world experience.
Incorporating Your Business for Dummies is a good book for the average reader. This book shows how to protect personal assets, save on taxes, set up your board of directors, conduct meetings and more. I especially enjoyed the part on how to create tax free medical benefits, pension and retirement plans. Very informative. For even more information, I recommend "Own Your Own Corporation" by Garrett Sutton and "How To Start a S Corporation" by Robert Cooke.
The tax information on how to pay yourself a salary from a Subchapter S corporation is just plain wrong. The authors also fail to point out that if your revenues are over $85,000, you should strongly consider a C corporation. This is advantageous for various reasons, none of which you will find in this waste of a good forest.
The info on corporate structures is very basic - you could easily find this level of detail on the web. The bulk of the book is very general... it mentions what you must do, but doesn't tell you how. Get the *basics* from your lawyer or accountant, then buy The Corporate Minutes Book by Anothony Mancuso instead of this book!
So much of the information is basic and since the book was written awhile ago, some of the material may be dated. Nonetheless, good first start for business people. Other good books include How To Start a S-Corporation by Robert Cooke and Brilliant Deductions by Wade Cook. The latter shows a way to drop out of the social security system and offers a good section on Nevada Corporations. ... Read more

Book Description What effects do laws have? Do individuals drive more cautiously, clear ice from sidewalks more diligently, and commit fewer crimes because of the threat of legal sanctions? Do corporations pollute less, market safer products, and obey contracts to avoid suit? And given the effects of laws, which are socially best? Such questions about the influence and desirability of laws have been investigated by legal scholars and economists in a new, rigorous, and systematic manner since the 1970s. Their approach, which is called economic, is widely considered to be intellectually compelling and to have revolutionized thinking about the law. In this book Steven Shavell provides an in-depth analysis and synthesis of the economic approach to the building blocks of our legal system, namely, property law, tort law, contract law, and criminal law. He also examines the litigation process as well as welfare economics and morality. Aimed at a broad audience, this book requires neither a legal background nor technical economics or mathematics to understand it. Because of its breadth, analytical clarity, and general accessibility, it is likely to serve as a definitive work in the economic analysis of law.

Book Description Reviews (2)
Finkelstein is a lawyer who with Herbert Robbins helped define what statistical evidence should be. He is well educated in statistics and his first edition was a classic. This book maintains the good features of the first book and provide a nice update with modern advances particularly in genetics. It is an introductory statistics text for lawyers with little or no statistical background and it teaches them the methods utilizing legal cases as examples. I was very much impressed with the authors' analysis of the Florida vote in the 2000 Presidential election that Finkelstein presented in a talk at the Joint Statistical Meetings in New York in August 2002. I heard the talk and discovered that this meticulous and interesting analysis is covered in the book, section 4.5.3 "Election 2000: Who won Florida?" This detail is typical of the nice interplay between statistical methodology and important legal questions. It is just one example of the gems in this book! The chapters are 1. Descriptive Statistics, 2. How to Count, 3. Elements of Probability, 4. Some Probability Distributions, 5. Statistical Inference for Two Proportions, 6. Comparing Multiple Proportions, 7. Comparing Means, 8. Combining Evidence Across Independent Strata, 9. Sampling Issues, 10. Epidemiology, 11. Survival Analysis, 12. Nonparametric Methods, 13. Regression Methods, 14. More Complex Regression Models. With many interesting and famous cases as examples this book is valuable to statisticians like me as well as to attorneys.
