2-0 out of 5 stars high school level textbook
I suppose nobody is going to buy this book unless they have to, so there is not much point to reviewing it.My girlfriend took the course. I looked at the book and was disappointed.Paralegal classes are generally at least junior college level.Except for the cases, statutes, etc., the book is on a high school civics textbook level, sort of patronizing, as if the author expected junior college students to be dumb. It's superficial, not particularly informative, and on some points, inaccurate. I'm not impressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Former Student Speaks
I read this book for a class I took from Joanne Hames, one of the authors, at the paralegal program I attend.I found the book very well- organized and practical. The subject matter not only covers all the basics, but italso equips the paralegal to succeed in today's high-tech law office. Also, the "Ethical Choices" and "Paralegals on the Job"sections in each chapter make the book quite dynamic. The authors of thisbook are experienced attorneys who know the law and are abreast ofeverything relevant to the modern paralegal.

5-0 out of 5 stars All introductory books should be like this.
Both informative (covering the "high points" or notable and interesting aspects of law) and well-written so you can read it straight through and get a lot out of it.The best starting point I have seen forbeginning to learn about law.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Paralegal Primer, Reference, & Refresher Text!
I love Introduction to Law by Joanne Banker Hames and Yvonne Ekern!Youmay wonder why I feel so passionate about a textbook? When I took anIntroduction to Law course four years ago, a text like this wasn'tavailable. I desired a text that would provide a good foundation andoverview for my paralegal education.Since a good text was not availableat the time, the instructor chose to put together a series of handouts tosupplement his lectures. You can imagine how excited I was to come acrosssuch an excellent text as this one, that provides an overview of the law,as well as a reference, a refresher, and resource for years to come.

The topics begin with the American Legal System and finish with thecontinually growing field of Law and Technology. Each chapter is organizedto take the student on an interactive educational experience into theparalegal field.Chapter summaries are provided at the end of each sectionalong with questions to review.Case law is incorporated into each chapterto deepen the student's understanding of the area of law discussed, as wellas introduce the student to reading case law and applying it to the chaptertopic.Case questions provide students the intellectual challenge toutilize abstract thinking skills necessary for a paralegal's success bothin school and on the job.

The text provides the necessary foundation fora paralegal program to build their curriculum from. It will constantly bereferred to throughout the student's other courses.

If you are justbeginning your paralegal education; if you've just graduated and arelooking for an excellent overview of the law; or if you are a teacher insearch of the perfect text for your class; look no further.

I hope thisis the first of many paralegal textsto come from Yvonne Ekern and JoanneBanker Hames! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars do NOT use this as a textbook
The very first sentence of the Prologue of this book contains a grammatical error (it should be "principles," not "principals") and I am sorry to say that things don't get much better. I purchased this book as a text for an Employment Law class and it was terrible; I quit using it halfway through the course and recommended the instructor find another text. The author seems to think he's the most credible person in the world but, as someone who is also a human resources practitioner, I can assert from experience that many of his opinions (several of which are presented as "facts") are wrong. He clearly doesn't even understand what the field of human resources IS, and in many cases I found his tone very offensive.

In addition to using more current information, Sovereign would be well-advised to better consider his audience and to research the field of human resources in general. I would suggest he start with professional organizations such as SHRM or ASTD; the advice and information on their web sites is far superior to anything in this text.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hodgepodge of mismatched topics
Sovereign seems to skip around often in a half-hearted effort at being comprehensive. The cases are not very recent, despite the publication date, and the book has a definite lack of flow. It is almost as if the author threw together several mismatched segments and forgot to edit it for comprehension and cohesiveness.

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate on the law; suffers from poor editing
I have to use this book as the text for a class I teach in Employment Law (i.e., non-collective-bargaining law) to students matriculating to a Master of Science Degree in Human Resources. The text adequately surveys the law, but suffers from terrible proofing and editing; it also needs an update, because the 1994 edition obviously was not written any later than early 1993, based on the omission of certain important U.S. Supreme Court cases from 1994 and since. The book also suffers from an extremely strong pro-management tone; a more balanced approach would serve the untutored reader better. There are better books, such as the ABA Guide, which I commend to potential readers of this book. ... Read more

Book Description

Digital rights management (DRM) is a set of business models and technologies that allows media companies to protect their intellectual property -- and profit in the online world. Cowritten by DRM pioneer William Rosenblatt, this lucid primer outlines the state of DRM today for media executives and IT decision-makers, covering business models (such as subscriptions), core technologies (watermarking, encryption, authentication), standards (such as XrML), vendors, and more. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A good attempt at explaining a difficult topic
As noted below, DRM consists of legal, technical and business issues and anyone trying to provide an overview of all three has their work cut out for them. Particularly in the early chapters of the book, these authors give it a good try.

Unfortunately, the biggest problem with the book is that they try to treat the technology standards and products available on the market, and the market is just changing too quickly for that to be for more than just a superficial look. Too much of what they discuss is already outdated, out-of-business, merged with other offerings or otherwise defunct. Not the fault of the authors, just the nature of the DRM market.

This book is:

Not a good read if you already understand the basic issues and hope to get more insight into the technology-- go to the web for that.

Absolutely a good read if you want to become familiar in a basic way in the underlying issues. Part 1 of the book is really useful reading even to help people who are pretty familiar with the topic structure their thinking.

2-0 out of 5 stars Still waiting for DRM to be explained.
The problem with the several texts available on digital copyright or Digital Rights Management is that the topic demands a treatment from at least three different perspectives: namely legal, technical and business. There are several books that try to tackle the topic of digital copyright from a legal viewpoint, and this one is clearly coming from a technical perspective. Legal issues are covered, but rather superficially. More surprisingly the crucial business issues and models that are driving interest in DRM are barely mentioned and there is no dicussion of the business models that are working and those that are not. Disappointingly many of the technical issues are also fudged in a way that will leave non-technical audiences confused, and those who are following technical developments frustrated. The fact is that, technically at least, DRM is an area where approaches, technologies and standards are all in rapid development and the industry has failed to converge on any single direction. This book's effort to offer a comprehensive review of available products means that it risked redundancy before it was published, as many of the companies and technologies have ceased to be relevant. What the world still needs is a book on DRM that reviews the law, discusses the business models (and consumer needs) that are driving developments, and describes fundamental approaches in a way that will remain relevant whatever product Microsoft may impose on us all next year. Unfortunately this book intrigues enough to encourage one to want to know more about DRM, but never really provides the answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good market overview
This book combines a business strategist's view of the DRM space with a sound explanation of the underlying technology, and also explains how both have evolved over the past decade. It's rare to find both views in any book, particularly one about an emerging software market. Usually, insights into markets like this book provides require purchasing research reports and speaking one-on-one to industry insiders. So, save yourself $10,000 and three weeks of work ... buy the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference
In an ever changing business landscape, I find nothing more comforting than relevant information. As an web application developer I used to always have questions about legality and DRM that nobody could answer. This book has a permananent spot on my shelf!

5-0 out of 5 stars By far the best treatment of DRM I've ever run across
DRM is a confusing topic, and this one of the clearest expositions of DRM (or most any other technical topic!) that I've ever run across. It demystifies a complex subject with simple straightforward language, describes key vendors and organizes them accurately into categories, and even contains a wealth of useful materials such as checklists to help the customer determine business/technical requirements, evaluate vendors, etc.

A must-have for any publisher, intellectual property lawyer, venture capitalist, technology vendor, or consulting firm dealing with digital content distribution or online intellectual property. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From workplace piracy to e-theft insurance
This key to designing and implementing email and software policies in a company structure provides business owners and managers with important information on how to produce clear policies which regulate computer use. From workplace piracy to e-theft insurance, Nancy Flynn's The ePolicy Handbook covers a wide range of topics and concerns.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cuts down on time to produce an effective e-policy
This book covers all of the key points and provides some excellent topics to include in a corporate e-policy. The goal of this book is to aid you in developing a policy that will provide clear, enforceable guidelines to your employees in the acceptable use of the Internet and electronic mail, and to protect your company's image.

It starts out with a well developed approach to assessing your current situation with respect to Internet and software usage, and provides a handy list of questions to aid in this task. The key objective is to discover your company's exposures and what abuse of systems or services [if any] need to be immediately addressed by the policy.

In order to fully understand the results of your assessment and how they relate to risks and exposures, the author provides fundamentals of "cyberlaw" and general security concerns that will indicate, roughly, the degree of risk your company faces. These are important considerations for tailoring an e-policy to which your employees can relate. I liked the chapter on cyber insurance products and how they can be used to transfer some of the inherent risks to an underwriter. I didn't even know such policies existed. The author also addresses software piracy, which can be a big issue because the world wide web has many sources for pirated software (commonly called "Warez"). It goes without saying that pirated software can expose your company to legal headaches and expenses, not to mention technical headaches and lost productivity that will occur if that stolen software also comes with a virus attached.

The book then shows you how to develop an e-policy that is based on your assessment results, and the issues previously discussed in the book. What is valuable here is that the author provides a list of all elements that need to be included in the policy. Moreover the next chapters provide additional material that will prove to be invaluable in preparing your company for the policy. For example, there is a "Netiquette" primer for employees, on-line writing guidelines, and advice on training your employees. The training aspect of implementing an e-policy is especially important because many employees have home computers and are experienced Internet users. They might consider themselves to be experts and may resent being "constrained" by a policy that dictates how they use the Internet at work. Educating them and getting their "buy-in" is essential, and the author provides some effective ways to get that "buy-in".

I found the sample policies in the appendices to be particularly valuable to use as guidelines for drafting a clearly-worded policy that covers all key elements. The applicable laws cited in the appendices were also valuable because they indicate the many sources of legal risks (and protection) that touch an e-policy.

This book provides an excellent starting point for developing an effective e-policy that can be closely tailored to your company and "sold" to your employees. Its clear writing, completeness and sensible advice earn it 5 stars. I will offer one caveat: any e-policy developed based on this book or any other should not be issued until it has been carefully reviewed by legal counsel. I am not an attorney (I am a computer consultant by profession), however, I do know that such a policy touches so many aspects of privacy and employment law that you may put your company at greater risk by implementing a policy that has not been reviewed by qualified legal counsel than by having no policy at all. ... This is an excellent text for a comprehensive look at sports law. Professor Wong has made some excllent changes to his already successful Essentials text. 4-0 out of 5 stars Real Estate Contracts fully expalined
I understand that Attorney Mark Warda has written over 60 books on real estate and the law, and this is just one of those books. He dissects the real estate contract between the buyer and the seller going over each and every clause and explaining its meaning in layman's terms.

Also included in the book are 8 different forms. If you are represented by a competent and knowledgeable real estate attorney, then this book may not be necessary. But if you are buying and selling property without an attorney then this book is a must. The more property you buy and sell the more you need this book. On the other hand if you already have many settlements under your belt this book will not have many new ideas for you.

This book would most benefit the beginner or intermediate real estate investor. I also read another book by the same author on "Land Trusts" and got much more from that book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Tool for real estate investors
I have been interested in investing in real estate for a long time and felt confident with all aspects of it except for the contract. I didn't feel like paying a lawyer to draw up a contract that I didn't really understand and that was 9 pages long was the right answer. After reading this book I have started investing using my own contract and containing clauses and ideas presented in this book. My contracts have been reviewed and approved by real estate attorneys who never had a clue that the contract wasn't prepared by an attorney.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fast, very practical reference for buyers or sellers
This book lets you choose how you want to set up your contract. It explains the pros and cons of each clause. Most lawyers would learn a lot from it but it is simple enough for anyone to understand. I loaned one from the library but decided I need one of my own, that's how good it is. ... Read more

Book Description

Every year, millions of people are the target of collection agency harassment. People react in a variety of ways: they screen their phone calls, are afraid to open their mail. Some consumers run to a bankruptcy lawyer simply to get away from the harassment.

Few people understand their rights under the law, and even fewer know they can actually sue the debt collector for abusive and deceptive behavior.

In fact, the collection industry is a multi-billion dollar industry: collectors are trained in the art of deception. When a consumer loses a job, goes through a divorce, or has an illness, they are already in a state of depression. The collector knows this, and knows how to prey on you to get you to pay.

Collectors and their lawyers meet at conventions. The lawyers tell the collectors which cases have been won and which have been lost; which tactics have been deemed legal and which have been deemed illegal. Imagine: they are ganging up on you. They are trained; you should be, too.

This book is written by an attorney who has spent the better part of a decade suing debt collectors. Learn the secrets they don't want you to know. Learn how courts have interpreted the law.

This book comes with case citations, and even sample complaints.

You can actually sue the debt collector, and win money damages, including 100% of your costs and attorney fees. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why are debt collectors trying to destroy this book?
I have to laugh when reading these reviews: This book gets 5 stars from consumers, yet it appears several debt collectors wrote reviews (they probably didn't even read the book) and give it a star or two. Gee, I wonder what is happening?

Not one review by any debt collector actually goes to the substance of the book: That debt collectors have laws they have to follow. When those laws are broken--and this happens frequently--you, the cosumer, can sue the debt collector. There is no reason to be afraid, no reason to screen your phone calls. We, as consumers, have tons of rights against debt collectors, many of them we don't even know. This books tells us what those rights are-nothing more, nothing less. The author does not say all debt collectors are bad. What he says, in plain, easy to read language, is that debt collectors cannot abuse and harass consumers, and he gives us exact cases that explain what the law is. There are only a handful of books out there on this subject. Debt collection is largely a "dark" industry and has never been exposed. And the debt collectors just can't stand the fact that someone finally exposed them and their cheap bag of tricks.

Consumers have rights they don't even know about, and the debt collection industry simply doesn't want us to know what those rights are. Debt collectors use desk names, caller id, talk to our neighbors, threaten to sue us. Much of this is illegal.

Why are debt collectors so afraid of this book?

My prediction: some "consumer" will give it an iffy review. The
reviews right now are 5 star consumer based, 1 star by the debt collectors. Gee, I wonder how much farther the collectors will go.

The word is out about you, debt collectors. I know it makes you burn. You're not all bad, so you say--but why are you so afraid of a book that simply tells the consumers what their rights are?
What are you trying to hide? As members of our wonderful open society, do you not want your fellow citizens to be fully informed on laws? Or do you break those laws so often, exposure could really, really hurt you?

You "cross the line" all the time, and many consumers don't even know when you do. When you cross the line, for example, use vile language, you can get sued. That's right--a consumer can go to the National Consumer Law Center in Boston, find a lawyer that makes a living suing debt collectors, and sue--but isn't this what you do? Don't you make a living suing people--people who have gone through a divorce, gotten ill, lost a job?

Please. It's about time you face your responsibility.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Author Responds
Richard DiMaggio, the author, must respond to the debt collector who is upset with the notion that consumers have rights. I must first state that the book does mention that debt collection is an occupation of last resort for most collectors. Unable to find a "real" job in the profession of their choice, the unemployable resort to harassing people for money. The unknown reviewer is an economist who became a debt collector. Enough said. When banks went broke in the S&L scandal, they went to Congress for a bailout. When Chrysler almost went belly up in the early 80's, they went to Congress, too. It would be great if we, as consumers, could go to our government for hand outs, but we can't. And with but a sprinkling of true "consumer advocates" in the country, the consumer has no where to turn. Even popular consumer credit counselling groups are sponsored by banks--but no, they don't tell you that.
The collection industry is huge. It has training camps for collectors, law firms, seminars and conventions. The lawyers who represent debt collectors monitor consumer protection attorneys and discuss ways to quash them. Law suits are monitored on a nationwide basis. Meanwhile, a consumer who has lost a job, became ill, or went through a divorce is up against this behemouth of an industry. The point of the book is that consumers have rights, and lots of them. But you don't know those rights, because the collection industry does everything it can to keep their limitations a secret--i.e., giving a great book a single star rating, even though they most likely didn't even read it.
You, the consumer, are in control of the debt collector. Never, ever, forget that. If the reader is so concern about credit card debt, tell him to tell the credit companies to stop sending everyone so many solicitations and to stop being so reckless in their own business. I have personally been quoted in Business Week magazine, and have appeared on WABC, CBS Evening News and lecture extensively to groups. I know of which I speak.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not all debt collectors are ruthless, this book is misleadin
I picked this up at a local library and read most of it looking for information on my field... that was a mistake. This book is simply capitalizing on groupthink and stretching the truth about the industry, painting all collectors with a bad brush and saying you can get away with things that you can't.

The company I work for, OSI, is very good at training us to respect the consumer, respect the FDCPA and even go above and beyond the FDCPA and help the consumer through hardships.

Example: If you simply SAY that you want us to stop calling you, we will mark that number bad and stop calling you. The FDCPA actually requires a written letter to be recieved, but we go beyond the laws to protect the debtor. Honestly, if you're mad at us why would you want to clean up your debt or even listen to us at all?

1-0 out of 5 stars I would not buy this book
This is not the book I would by to help me with my credit problems. There are more practical books that contain letters, contain practical help. Remember that if you wait 7 years without applying for bankruptcy, your debt will disappear by itself because of the rules. You don't have to apply for bankruptcy. Not 1 book that I read on the topic, told me that. For all of you who have problems with credit, this is a good solution. I hope that helps

1-0 out of 5 stars And one more point for Mr. Dimaggio....
Regarding your response to the college student, Lee Iacocca and Chrysler PAID BACK the government loan!

As for the S&L's they should have come under the same regulations as full service banks years ago, as well as the credit unions, which will be the next government bailout! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Effective International Joint Venture Management
Effective International Joint Venture Management by Dr. Ronald Charles Wolf, an American attorney resident decades in Lisbon, Portugal, has received joint acclaim from the academic world and from corporate entrepreneurs. It is a practical guide to all the essential steps required in the formation and management of an international joint venture. This explicit and lucid textbook is for all members of the international business community, lawyers, teachers and students. It is written in non-technical language but reviews thoroughly complex commercial, financial and legal topics. It is an indispensable guide for the international executives responsible for cross-border mergers and acquisitions and their advisors. Typical comments are:

"There has been a large amount written in the strategic management literature about when to set up an international joint venture (IJV), how to choose a partner, and how to manage the new venture. However, the legal aspects have not commanded great attention. Ronald Wolf remedies this oversight. His book is exhaustively detailed and deals in a very readable fashion with everything you need to know if you are contemplating an IJV. An invaluable addition to the library of the international businessman, and one not likely to gather dust," David Faulkner, Tutorial Fellow, Christ Church College, Oxford University.

"A truly useful guide to establishing and managing IJVs...[Wolf's book] has certainly enlarged the boundaries of my thinking on the subject and enriched the breadth of practical legal insights needed for executives and students," Associate Prof. Yadong, College of Business Administration, University of Hawaii.

"...[A] comprehensive guide to the complex business and legal issues of forming, governing, and even dissolving international joint ventures...Wolf offers pragmatic solutions in business-manager terms, which can be easily grasped and effectively executed...This book is recommended as an excellent step-by-step conceptual guide for those embarking on their first [international joint venture], as well as a solid reference on specific issues for the more experienced venturer," Patrick Tolbert, Executive Vice President, Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, LSG Sky Chefs, Inc.

"Effective International Joint Venture Management contains a wealth of practical information, highly pragmatic advice, and an easily followed road map.
