5-0 out of 5 stars Prime Time Law -- a great read!
I read "Prime Time Law" for my Society and Law class at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. It is formatted into essays written on different prime time television shows (i.e. Law & Order, L.A. Law, NYPD Blue, etc.).The book as a whole is an excellent analysis of how law and legal actions are portrayed on the small screen. An exception read for anyone interested in a theoretical analysis of such television programs. ... Book Description

Goldfarb argues persuasively for cameras in the courtroom, O.J. notwithstanding. He is aware of the problems but believes strongly that the more open a courtroom, the more open and free our society. The challenge, which he describes so well, is to balance the new demanding technology against our traditional dedication to democracy.
-- Marvin Kalb, Director, Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics, and Public Policy, Harvard University.

A tour de force, a one-stop repositiory of the history, facts, and the law of the matter.I plan to plagiarize from it shamelessly. This is an important subject, and Goldfarb's book provides the first comprehensive, in-depth study of the issue.
-- Fred Graham, Chief Anchor and Managing Editor, Court TV

Going beyond the ovious controversies of recent years, Goldfarb surveys the role of television in courtrooms with cool but crisp detachement. He brings historical context, legal analysis, and rich experience to bear on the issue, concluding that courts are public institutions that do not belong exclusively to the judges and lawyers who run them. His persuasive argument for greater openness is bound to influence future debate on the topic.
-- Sanford J. Ungar, Dean, School of Communication, American University

In the last quarter century, televised court proceedings have gone from an outlandish idea to a seemingly inevitable reality.Yet, debate continues to rage over the dangers and benefits to the justice system of cameras in the courtroom.Critics contend television transforms the temple of justice into crass theatre.Supporters maintain that silent cameras portray "the real thing," that without them judicial reality is inevitably filtered through the mind and pens of a finite pool of reporters.

Television in a courtroom is clearly a two-edged sword, both invasive and informative.Bringing a trial to the widest possible audience creates pressures and temptations for all participants. While it reduces speculations and fears about what transpired, television sometimes forces the general public, which possesses information the jury may not have, into a conflicting assessment of specific cases and the justice system in general.

TV or Not TV argues convincingly that society gains much more than it loses when trials are open to public scrutiny and discussion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read.
This man (Richard Fox) is a genius. I can't comment enough on how much this book has changed my life. I am forever changed because of this book--for the better. I would buy this book not once, not twice, but over and over again simply for the satisfaction of owning something so worthwhile and fascinating. Highly recommended for your bookshelf and anyone else's. Tell a friend!

5-0 out of 5 stars An important and timely book.
Like most Americans, you and I have already devoted countless hours absorbing the latest reports about high-profile legal cases. A short list reminds us of the time we have spent: O. J., JonBenet, Rodney King, Lorena Bobitt, Monica Lewinsky, and the British nanny Louise Woodward. In the 1990s, these and other judicial soap operas have become a mainstay of mainstream television, newspapers, and magazines. These "dramas" are the lifeblood of the newer cable and Internet "news" media. These cases have so worked their way into our collective consciousness that the mere mention of one can easily evoke (and provoke!) a long and far-ranging discussion.

In their new book TABLOID JUSTICE: CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN AN AGE OF MEDIA FRENZY, Richard Fox and Robert Van Sickel have dissected how the increasingly entertainment-oriented news media have covered such high-profile legal cases. The authors show how growing familiarity with celebrity criminal cases has distorted our understanding of the U. S. legal system and undercut our confidence in law enforcement, attorneys, judges, and the jury system.

TABLOID JUSTICE offers a concise introduction to this important subject. It is richly documented without being pedantic. It is a wonderful text for college-level courses in Law and Society or Mass Communications. Students will find its argument compelling. Faculty will appreciate its value as a catalyst for class discussions about the impact of the media on our legal system.

Soon a new "trial of the century" will come our way. Fox and Van Sickel want all of us to be better prepared when it does. ... Read more

Book Description

The Englishman's home is his castle, or so generations of Britons ha thought. The British have long been obsessed with privacy and this obsession has provoked considerable debate amongst legislators, lawyers and the media. In recent years, the controversy has raged on with, on one hand, the media claiming public interest, and on the other, public figures claiming invasion of their privacy. This title argues that the freedom of the press can be reconciled with the right of privacy. Following an account of the justification for free speech and privacy and a careful analysis of the law, the author argues that the combined force of three recent developments provides adequate means for the exercise of judicial recognition of individual's right to privacy: the expanding remedy for breach of confidence the revived action for the infliction of emotional distress and the growing influence of international recognition of ""privacy"" especially the jurisprudence of the European Convention of Human Rights. ...
