3-0 out of 5 stars Difficult to understand
Almost no notes or comments on compiled materials in the book. It is difficult to find keys to understand materials from this book without assistance from teachers or study guides. The materials themselves are instructive and interesting. The book becomes voluminous due to the appended rules and their notes. If one has a separate rule book, he/she has to spend more for the unnecessary appendix attached to this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 1L: YOU NEED THIS BOOK. IT IS YOUR CIV PRO BIBLE!
This text is incrediblely useful. I remember being nervous the first day I walked into this class because this is the one class I had no idea what it was about. This book does an excellent job of really helping you to overcome that feeling. In addition, this is a great resource if you have bad professors. Luckily, I had good professors and this book, this book made a real difference in my final grade (I had a very, very high grade). One of the advantages it has over your normal text is that it is written in plain English. The Federal Rules of Civ Pro are at times difficult to decode and this book does a nice job of breaking it down. In addition, it also provides graphs and visuals that really help to breakup the difficult concepts. Finally, and I think this is the best part of the series, the book is focused on teaching through examples. If you go through the whole book and really study the examples, you should be fine for the exam. This book is a great tool. I highly recommend this. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could. You need this book if you are going to start your first year soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Most of what they say is true
Having just finished my civ pro course and final exam (though no grade yet as I write this), I can say I found Glannon's supplement helpful -- especially for the most complicated questions like joinder, jurisdiction, and the intersections of the two. As another reviewer has noted, this isn't a secret weapon, since chances are almost everyone else in your class will have it. (Our prof even made it recommended supplemental reading.) Like all authors, Glannon has his own quirks, and some points he chooses to dwell on may or may not align with what your professor thinks is important. Glannon's somewhat cutesy writing style may get on your nerves after a while, but this book is still almost surely better written than your textbook. You can usually knock off each chapter in an hour or less.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for first year law students
If not for this book, I would have been lost in Civil Procedure during my first year of law school. If you are starting law school, get this book. Anything I didn't quite understand in class, this book explained. The examples are invaluable in studying for exams.

4-0 out of 5 stars firstyearlaw
While I don't advocate that this book will give you an A on your civ pro exam, it can help you understand in more depth what's going on in that class. It gives wonderful examples and explanations of specific civ pro problems that can help link up the different areas of the subject. If you're struggling with civ pro, I suggest buying this book. If you take the time to read it carefully, it trully can help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the basics
My Civ Pro professor has been teaching for 40 years, wrote one of the most popular textbooks on the subject, and was utterly incomprehensible. I relied on this book to help me understand the reading and lectures as class went along, and to do some last-minute learning before exams. Most of my friends did not use any study aids, for some reason, and I found that I was one of the few who actually felt that they comprehended the class material and the exam exam. This book definitely doesn't go into the detail of a real course, but it was great for grasping the basics, so that one is able to follow the deeper interpretation of a class discussion. If nothing else, this book was a great confidence-builder. ... Read more

It also presents the concept of corrections as a "system" of interconnected organizations and carries this theme throughout the book. From a more practical standpoint, many find this text appealing because it provides comprehensive coverage without overwhelming students. 5-0 out of 5 stars Criminal Investigators this is a must have in your library!
This book is a must have for those interested in criminal investigations. It is up with the current technological advances and guides you through various information essential to criminal investigations. This book can be used by both public and private sector. As a police officer for the City of Philadelphia it is a must-read for those aspiring to be a detective in regard to the promotional exams. I did like the free InfoTrac College edition and hope that they can be included in subsequent editions, I found it very helpful in terms of research material. The book even covered many-real life examples and Terrorist-related challenges that all involved in law enforecement should be knowledgeable of. I would recommend this book to other officers, and even to lawyers. There is a study guide, ISBN # 0-534-61525-2, order them both today.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is The Study Guide Only - Not the Text!
If you're thinking of buying, Make sure you get the 6th Edition hard cover text that goes with it. I was badly fooled after looking at several books with the same title.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reads with ease. Topical. Relevant. Comprehensive.
I read this book as part of a university level criminal investigations class for criminal justice professionals, the book being the personal choice of my professor whom himself had over 25 years federal and local law enforcement experience as an investigator. The book read absolutely seemlessly. Chapters were brimming with topical, relevant facts. And the chapters went into sufficient detail for the book to serve as either a solid basis for the criminal justice novice or as a reference for the more advanced professional who may not have the on-the-job exposure to all aspects of criminal investigation. While covering strictly forensic topics it did not cross the line from providing information relevant to an on-scene investigator to that which would only be relevant to a forensic technician, always keeping the material and topics relevant to patrol and investigative law enforcement officers, not forensic technicians. This is not a forensics textbook. This is an investigations handbook. Total hands on. Makes you think. Aids in planning. If anything, the book was brimming from cover to cover to the point that it could very well have gone on in volume after volume. A good starting point. ... Read more

In the case of Steven D. Stark v. members of the American Bar Association, we'd all come out winners, if Stark prevailed. For 12 years Stark taught legal writing to Harvard Law School students; now, he's out to teach the rest of us. "You don't need a literary critic," says Stark, "to know how badly most lawyers write." He offers as evidence most briefs, memos, and law review articles. Using legal jargon helps lawyers confuse the court, which in some cases is the best defense they've got, and it also helps convince impressed clients that exorbitant fees are well earned.

But Stark argues that good legal writing should pass what he calls the McDonald's test. "If you were to read the document you're drafting aloud in McDonald's," Stark asks, "would people understand what you're saying?" He also insists that, like fiction writers and journalists, lawyers need to be good storytellers. "On one level," he says, "a lawsuit is simply a clash of competing stories. If you tell your story better than the lawyer for the other side ... you will have a far better chance of prevailing." Writing to Win is an excellent resource for guidance on organization and research, litigation writing, oral argument, and even writing memos and letters. Stark illustrates his lessons with examples written by lawyers--whereas most law schools rely more heavily on the writing of judges. Among his many salient points are his recommendations that you should lead with your conclusions ("legal arguments or explanations," he says, "should not be like an O. Henry short story") and that you should deal with the arguments against your case. The latter is not only best heard from you rather than from your adversary, but it "actually enhances your credibility." --Jane Steinberg ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but also see Common Sense Rules of Advocacy
In additon to Stark's Writing to Win, also get a practical book on trial advocacy, "Common Sense Rules of Advocacy for Lawyers" (also a wonderful book for 3Ls and new lawyers who want to learn how to be effective advocates). The author, Keith Evans, practiced as a British barrister for a decade and as a California trial lawyer for many years. He also lectured regularly to many American Inns of Court.

However, be warned: Common Sense Rules of Advocacy is NOT a book for litigators, but for advocates.

What others have said about Evans book:

"Valuable review for the old timers and an excellent primer for those who are starting the climb."
-- Jacob A. Stein, Stein, Mitchell & Mezines, Washington, DC

"Superb how-to book ...that is refreshingly readable."
-- Karl Tegland, author, "Courtroom Handbook on Washington Evidence"

"A wonderful 'Bible' for the trial lawyer who wants to win. If only we had had this in law school!"
-- Browne Greene, Greene, Broillet, Panish & Wheeler, Santa Monica, CA

"Even the most experienced trial lawyer can pick up some new techniques here."
-- Frederick C. Moss, Professor, Dedman School of Law, Southern Methodist University

"Valuable insights and practical lessons for anyone who advocates for a living."
-- Steve Clymer, J.D., mediator, arbitrator, and facilitator with ACCORD Dispute Resolution Services, Inc.

    "Remarkable compendium of useful advice."
-- Roxanne Barton Conlin, Roxanne Conlin & Associates, Des Moines, IA (first woman President of Association of Trial Lawyers of America)

"Great introduction for the new lawyer and a wonderful learning tool for the advocate with experience."
-- Sherman L. Cohn, Professor, Georgetown University Law Center (first national President of American Inns of Court)

    "Terrific guidebook."
-- Philip H. Corboy, Corboy & Demetrio, Chicago, IL

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening, yet funny
More than one person has referred to Stark as the David Letterman of legal writing instructors. He advances the notion, also advanced by Bryan Garner and for many years by James Raymond, of clear and (hard as it is for a lawyer to do) interesting writing. The several series of commandments at the beginning chapter beginnings enable you to keep the main ideas in your mind. The book is a good combination of instructional manual and a quick briefing paper. All lawyers should read and embrace Stark's notions. I only wish he had not emphasized winning as the goal, but I suppose that what his publisher needed to get someone to buy the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
I own the book by Mr. Stark, and I also recommend the books by Bryan Garner, including, Elements Of Legal Style. The Stark book and the others, like the example I gave are useful for lawyers, law students, and paralegals, like myself, or anyone who writes on legal matters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great advice from someone who knows.
Stark's credentials as a practicing litigator and writing teacher give him great credibility, and he makes the most of it with this entertaining and useful book. It is superbly organized and easy to read. Plus, he gives lots of practical examples that drive home his points. A great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly funny
Got this book for my stepson, & got a chance to look at it when we visited him at college. As I expected, it's a good book for anyone who wants to improve their writing, whether they are interested in law or not. What I didn't expect is that it was funny. 4-0 out of 5 stars Law school made easier
If you are a law student taking Legal Writing or an associate (summer or new) in a firm, this book will teach or refresh all the skills you need to write an effective memo or brief. The authors teach clear writing and provide actual student wrting samples to elucidate their techniques. The book is especially helpful for those who are wholly unfamiliar with legal writing, and the index and layout make it a user-friendly reference tool. Most impoprtantly, though, the book is short; it provides a comprehensive framework without flooding the reader with unnecessary or confusing information. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars no recommendation
I used Criminal Law by Gardner and Anderson as my text when I taught an undergrad Criminal Law class. I found it overly simplistic, even for that level, and left my students with too many loose ends. The case excerpts used are drastically edited, sometimes only a sentence, which does not help demonstrate the proposition the cases supposedly stand for. It seemed that the authors also spent an inordinate amount of text on relatively unimportant topics. I also found the instructor's edition to be unhelpful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No Landlord Should Be Without This Guide!
This book is fantastic for the experienced, as well as the inexperienced landlord. It sets out in plain English some of the common legal pitfalls landlords run into and how to avoid them. The books cites examples - some quite frightening - of how these pitfalls occur and the appropriate action to take. The book clearly outlines the differences in particular laws between the states. It explains all aspects of landlord law from finding goods tenants to dismissing bad tenants. The book makes a great desk reference and it's cheaper than a lawyer!

5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't recommend this book ENOUGH!!!
This book has helped through every step of buying my first investment property. It's like having your own professional standing over your shoulder, reminding you about every detail of every step. The section on insurance alone is completely priceless, pointing out that a landlord needs not just property loss coverage but also personal liability. And not just physical liability, but coverage of potential slander, libel, discrimination, unlawful eviction, invasion of privacy suits... And don't forget loss of rents! It's that kind of detail that maybe someone who's done this before would call 'basic.' But I admit: I am no pro, yet when I called an insurance agent and explained what I wanted coverage for, he said to me, "Um, you've done this before, haven't you?" Thank you, nolo!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best landlord book bar-none!
This is the only book you need! It is incredibly easy to use and covers everything from rental agreements, to liability and discrimination, to maintenance, to evictions. It really leaves nothing out. The best part is the included CD-ROM which has all of the forms you'll need in an easy-to-fill-in format.
I own five properties and thanks to Every Landlord's Legal Guide I have learned how to legally protect myself and have consequently avoided countless expensive lawsuits. This book could end up saving you thousands!

    5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST!
This is the best landlord book! You have to get it. The CD ROM contains everything I use to manage my properties and be a good landlord. It makes property management and landlording so rewarding and easy than any person could succeed at it if they follow this book's guidelines.

I own 3 properties so far and this book has made my success possible!

5-0 out of 5 stars Plain and simple...
the definitive legal guide. Accompanied with "Landlording, A Handymanual...etc" its all you need. ... Read more
