This is a fantastic reference book. I can't count how many times I have opened it. HOWEVER, there is a new edition coming out in June 2004, so the interested yet frugal buyer might want to hold off for a few months

Very misleading
I purchased this book with the accompanying workbook. Although it may contain good information, the answers are not provided to the exercises--in either the book or workbook. Apparently, a separate instructor's manual needs to be purchased. When spending [the money] for both books, I didn't even think that answers would not be provided, much less that I'd have to spend [more money] to get them. I'd recommend the book, workbook, and instructor's manual, unless you're taking a class that allows you to check to make sure you understand the concepts.

It never leaves my desk
While it seems like a large chunk of change, this book is worth every penny. Ever since I've purchased it, many of my colleagues (I'm a social scientist at KU) ask to borrow it, but I never let it go. Just about any question I have about qualitative research can be answered, to some degree, with this book. What's more, even in some of the more controversial areas of qualitative research the book points to other readings that may shed light on alternate perspectives.

Just buy the book. I did, and I don't regret it for a moment. It's also nice in that it covers a wide variety of disciplines and contexts -- journalists, sociologists, communicologits, psychologists, and political scientists can all use the book with equal ease. One area, though, that I've heard the book is not as strong toward is anthropology. If you're an anthropologist, you may want to check out Holstein's interviewing methods book.

Very good information for those willing to dig
These books contain a great deal of advanced spiritual information. The Berg's state that it is information that can stand alone, but since it is a detailed explanation of the deeper meanings of God's law, it is really necessary to have a background in that law. It would be wise to read the five books of the Torah first, although they have notes in the text referring to the appropriate texts of the law the Zohar section is discussing.

Most Christians will take exception to much of what the Zohar has to teach, but that is because of their own misunderstanding of the law and the ultimate sacrifice it required. Once there is an adequate background in the law and its spiritual meaning (Romans 7:14), the Zohar will begin to take on a great deal of meaning for the Christian, and his eyes will be opened in ways, and to truths that cannot be found in church teaching, and may not easily be discovered from the Bible. "He who has ears, let him hear," Matt. 13:9. "For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it," Matt 13:17.

An invaluable resource
The second edition (2001) of this work is indeed an outstanding resource. My daily work includes imaging of sports and musculoskeletal injuries. I find this book frequently useful to supplement deficiencies in my knowledge and experience, and a most useful companion to the second edition (2001) of "Musculoskeletal Ultrasound" by Marnix van Holsbeeck and Joseph Introcaso.

Highly recommended as a workbench resource to those interested in imaging of sports injuries.

Best Sports Medicine Book I've Ever Used!
The Second edition of Clinical Sports Medicine is the best reference book I have come across as an athletic therapist and professional fitness and lifestyle consultant. I find it very easy to navigate with great illustrations and information. The references are all very recent and evidence-based so you feel confident in following the authors' recommendations. It is particularly good value at 67 US dollars - most hardcover books of this size are about twice that price. The corresponding website has updated information, including relevant published papers, which I find quite helpful also. These authors have really done a fabulous job of classifying sports medicine information in a logical and easy-to-use format. I highly recommend it to anyone in the sports, fitness, and/or health fields!

2nd edition already a big hit

The 2nd edition (2001) is now readily available world-wide. It contains 7 new chapters and every chapter has been fully updated. It contains practical guidelines for shoulder pain management (with Ben Kibler), new management of anterior knee pain (with Jenny McConnell)and guidelines as to how to teach pelvic stability for patients in treatment of back pain. It includes a complete update of management of tendon injuries incorporating recent advances in treatment (with Jill Cook, Hakan Alfredson, etc). Medical chapters include updates on drugs in sport, managing heat illness and ethics in sport. Large, practical chapters describe sports medicine care for the female athlete, the pediatric athlete, the disabled athlete and seniors. At less than $...dollars, this 918 page hard-cover 2nd edition, with over 900 illustrations, is extremely good value. We would argue the best value of any clinical sports medicine text, and this is reflected by this edition selling almost 10,000 copies already.

Also, it has a complete chapter that can be downloaded (Achilles pain) and a large chunk of the shoulder pain chapter. There are additional references with weblinks on the 'reading room' icon. Practical discussion on a complex organization

One of the best text books I've read yet...
I have the new 5th edition. As a nursing student this text has been extremely easy to read and understand the concepts. It keeps you interested in the information with practical examples and lively dialogue and includes helpful memory tips. It also comes with a cd-rom and access to a web site that really help you study and review the material. My only complaint is the chemistry chapter (Chpt. 2) is a little long and dry but then that is probably due to the subject matter and not the author. I would highly recommend it to anyone!

The Best!
Where can you find a comprehensive book covering the brain, spine, and head and neck that is funny, clever, authoritative, well-illustrated AND costs less than $100? It's unheard of!

I laughed myself silly during some of the chapters.

I happen to know one of the authors, and he's brilliant. The other guy ain't half bad either.

Excellent Book
I have the second edition of this book. Very well written in a fun and sarcastic way making it pleasant to read. Clear pictures with clinical background. I have reviewed many books on neuroradiology, by far, this is the best. The "Cranial Anatomy" chapter alone is an excellent review on normal anatomy. A clinician does not need more than the chapter on "Techniques on Neuroimaging" to learn about the physics of imaging.

Authors, thank you
The authors want to transmit their knowledge to the reader. They are real teachers, as all textbook authors should be. Their aim is to help us learn neuroradiology and not just enrich their CV like many others do. Congratulations and thank you!

Don't Leave Home Without It
As Director of Neuroradiology at a Harvard teaching hospital for many years, I have been responsible for recommending texts for residents to begin their study of my subspecialty. When this book was first published, it happened to be the year in which our subspecialty offered its own examination for certification. Because I was interested in finding a text to provide a current survey of the field, I bought this book. Little did I know how comprehensive this text was- a true "bang for the buck". The coverage of the field, including neck imaging, is remarkably thorough and up-to-date, considering the current edition is 6 years old.

The only minor deficiency is a paucity of illustrations, but I believe a pictorial work book keyed and correlated to this text has now been published.

What makes this text unique is the authors' wry sense of humor, with "zingers" appearing unexpectedly- they literally wake you up and provide encouragement to finish even the most challenging chapters. The final sections, which include a unique chapter on how to interpret MR and CT images, as well as lists of differential diagnoses, are real gems.

In summary- as Karl Malden said- "Don't Leave Home Without It". The book is small enough to carry, and a valuable resource from which to learn while one works in the radiology reading room.

Good effort
This is a very, very good book. The text is clear and uncluttered. The tone is light - the authors have tried to write a book that is enjoyable to read, not just informative. Good pictures, though some of them can be improved by enlargement.

Two negatives:
1. The price is steep. I agree with the reviewer below - most users will be residents and med students, who can ill afford paying so much for an "essentials" text.

2. A new edition is desperately due - it is more than 7 years since the first was published. The new edition was supposed to be out in 2000. When it couldn't be brought out, Mosby promised that it'd be out in December 2001. Now even that deadline has been passed, and Mosby 'promises', yet again, that it will be out May 2002. Great educational book
I actually work in Central Sterile Processing. I found this book very useful with the information of surgical procedures, anotomy charts , surgical instruments. Plus it is very clear on its format, easy to understand and follow. This book will answer many questions that students going for surgical technology need or simple just like me, a person who works with surgical instruments on the daily basis.

This is an excellent book if you are a surgical technology student. I bought this book in addition to my required book for school becuase it was so much better than the required book. It is very descriptive and has lots of helpful pictures. The AST has done a wondeful job with this text book.

A book of information for the Surgical Technologist student
This book is full of information that is helpful. I am in my second term of taking a Surgical Technology course. We just start the real meat of the course... from patient position, drapes, and starting in a couple of weeks gi surgery. This book has it all and the instruments used in the major and minor tray. We have now the Alexander's which is good for the breakdown of different surgerical procedures but when it comes to the Surgical Tech's role there is not much. Molecules of ego
Now don't get me wrong, this is a good book. Pert provides a (Western) scientific perspective on the mind/body question, and provides a lot of food for thought. The idea that our bodies and minds are bound together as one, through a process of transmission and reception of molecules throughout the body (not just in the brain), opens up endless possibilities for keeping ourselves well and healing when that is required. You should read it just to get the layperson's understanding of how this is so. On the other hand, be prepared for another story, the intellectual/emotional biography of Pert. While it makes sense (in keeping with the holistic perspective) to meld the personal and the professional, I'd estimate the ratio as 3 personal to 1 professional, where I would have preferred the opposite. Whether she is displaying hard work, intelligence, naivete or her appreciation of her co-workers' physical attributes, the book seems to be very much about her. If you want the ideas without the ego, read something else on this topic.

Thought provoking, but only up to a point
"Molecules of Emotion" was certainly not what I expected from the jacket blurbs. Yes, there is some discussion of the scientific discoveries regarding emotion, but only in the first half of the book, and even there, it's a small minority of the content, couched in a personal narrative more centered on Candace Pert's viewpoint of her own career.

Yes, the saddening politics of paper publication, awards selection and grant approval in the world of government- and industry-funded biological research is quite an interesting read for an outsider. It even got my blood boiling to think of the promising therapies that are possibly being ignored due to their lack of profit potential (though this wasn't a new idea to me). It's too bad this ends up being the high point of the book.

From the very beginning, Pert's own ego comes to the fore in places in a way that detracts from the information that I (and presumably some others) bought the book for in the first place. There is something about the way she describes her personal experiences (more extensively and less modestly than might have seemed appropriate for a presentation of important scientific information) that made me wonder how much differently other people must perceive her than she perceives herself (even before she admits as much later on).

Unfortunately, this is not the worst of it. The early content is clearly scientifically validated, and describes in some detail (just enough for plausibility) the experiments that were conducted and the meaning of the results. But by the second half of the book, she seems to have thrown scientific inquiry to the wind in favor of unfounded speculation, including extensive quotations of flighty lunchtime conversations she's had with psychics and others, with no foundation or evidence to back up any of the wild ideas that spring forth. It degenerates into such drivel that I stopped reading entirely 50 pages from the end (and I rarely fail to slog through the last pages of even the dreariest tome).

Not that it isn't a bit fascinating what this woman believes (some of which is entirely plausible, insightful, and well founded, while some is just the opposite, with seemingly little discrimination between the two extremes), but I didn't have much interest in paying money and spending time on someone's not-very-interesting life story or wild speculations.

In sum, the first half of the book is reasonably interesting, both in terms of the science and the politics of science. The second half is only interesting as a personality study of a scientest appearantly so frustrated with the politics of science that she to a large extent rejected science itself, no longer discriminating between theories backed by experiment or other evidence and those that are not.

Fans of alternative healing, particularly those just savvy enough to be impressed by passing references to terms like "quantum mechanics" and "information theory" (in close association with "chakra" and "subtle energy", a supposed force beyond those of electicity, gravity, etc. invented to explain the power of love) but not sophisticated enough to actually understand what they really mean, will eat up the second half of this book, as will insecure psychologists threatened by successful drug treatmenets for depression.

Don't get me wrong: I have nothing against self-help books, spiritual healing or holistic approaches to a healthy body and mind. (And some of Pert's later musings are perfectly valid wise words for how to live a good and happy life.) But this book ends up in a VERY different place from where the jacket summary and testimonials would suggest.

Autobiography of a Scientist
After reading about Candace Pert's discoveries in numerous magazine articles, I decided to read her book to learn more. What I learned about was Candace Pert. The book contains information about the biology of emotions, but it is embedded in a narrative of Dr. Pert's life as a scientist. Though the story is an interesting one, it was a disappointment for someone looking for a layperson's introduction to the molecules of emotions.

It is more an autobiography then anything else
This book came highly recommended. I am a scientist but not a biologist. I found the first couple of chapters rather difficult to comprehend since I had absolutely no background in molecular-biology. Because I like a great challenge, I decided to stick with the book and see if I could learn the technical lingo; after several pages into the book, and additional anatomy textbooks, I was able to comprehend what was going on and started to make sense of all the detailed research Dr. Pert was talking about. The downside of this book is that after 160 pages Dr. Pert is still talking about herself, her-misfortune and the roughness of her life being a woman working in a male dominated environment. There is nothing concrete on how one should apply or work with emotions to prevent illnesses until the very end of the book. If one would like to skip the agony of learning a new science and would like to get the just of the book, I suggest reading the last chapter, chapter 13 "Truth" pg 279 and then go to Appendix A and B. Personally, I found this book to be more of an autobiography. If you like autobiographies then it is entertaining but a difficult read if you are looking to better your life by learning from this book I suggest you choose an other author.

Pleasant reading experience

Perfect overview book for medicine students
This book is strongly recommended in the education for medical students in the University of Lund. That's why I read it. It's perfect as a startup book for your pre-clin medical studies. It's not deep enough in the physiology part (although anatomy and especially histology is very good) but the integrated approach is really terrific and it makes you understand in a whole new way. If you want to become a good doctor, you should absolutely buy this book, or borrow it a least in your library. The first integrated anatomy & physiology book I've read that's deep enough for medical students. Good work Seeley.

Dr. Seeley makes the complex simple
I had the pleasure of not only getting to use this text in my A&P class but I was taught by Dr. Seeley at Idaho State University. Great text with great explinations. I am still using it as a resource in Physician Assistant training.

Excellent Basics of Anatomy and Physiology
I am sure that people who have read this book will agree that this product is the means of excellent basic Anatomy and Physiology. I have found figures and data tables very clear and easily understandable. Excellent Summaries at the end of each chapter beautifies this product. Clinical facts given from time to time are as interesting and knowledgeable as "Develop Your Reasoning Skills" Problems. This book deserve a chance from every Anatomy student. I conratulate the authors and highly recommend this book.

Great if you really want to do longitudinal data analysis
One of the great features of this book is that it is addressed to the empirical researcher and it really tells you how to conduct good data-analysis with longitudinal data. It doesn't push one particular piece of software, either, but uses a variety of different software packages. The book is really easy to read, and clearly explained -- and, there's so much in it!

This is a great book, it tells you in a straightforward way how to analyze your longitudinal data to answer questions of critical importance in the social sciences. Absolutely essential resource
Turabian's book is an absolutely essential resource for any college undergraduate or graduate student that wants to produce quality papers. There's a reason this book is a "classic" work assigned in many English and other humanities classes for many years, it covers nearly everything from the posessive of Jesus to how to cite book chapters to format footnotes and tables of contents.
I do agree that the book does need to be updated to include internet resources, hopefully this will be done in a new edition soon.

This is one of my favorite books. Okay, yes, I admit it, I'm a nerd. But I'm a nerd that did very well on all of my college papers because I knew the proper tabulation of a footnote.

It is essentially an abridged version of the Chicago Manual of Style, for prose writing. Most of the CMS is pretty useless for what most people deal with, and I personally think it's hard to find anything in. Turabian, on the other hand, is a concise little paperback that offers information that no online service can compete with.

If you're going to buy one reference book for college, this should be it. Forget the dictionary, forget the thesaurus: they come with Microsoft and you can find perfectly good ones online. Turabian is all you'll need in life. Call it "Turabian" too, as in "I was looking through my Turabian last night, and it says to use the Oxford comma" and you'll instantly impress all of your professors, graduate with honors, and be accepted to the med school of your choice.

nice book but...
Its a nice book, but I prefer online term paper sites. I ordered an essay from http://www.creative-termpapers.com and got an A!!!..... no need of this book......but its good.

Rather useless for the modern research writer
The Turabian manual is confusing, difficult to use and next to useless for anyone using the Internet or online sources in their research. It has not been updated to reflect the existance of the Internet. As a result, there is no uniform way of citing Internet sources. Use this guide only if forced to by your professor!

Pharmacotherapy is a must buy book for every pharmacist
Pharmacotherapy: a pathophysiological approach is a book designed specifically for pharmacists. It covers a wide range of diseases and includes introductory chapters covering different subjects in the pharmacy practice from clinical pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, pharmacoeconomics, evidence-based medicine and much more. Every chapter introduce the pathophysiology of the disease relevant to drug therapy, then the full management plan is evoqued with the clinical use of the different drugs. I recommend to read in parallel `Applied Therapeutics: the clinical use of drug `to see how the management is applied in clinical settings. In second term, one can practice with the cases of the Pharmacotherapy: a patient focused approach before applying to real life cases.
I know i will continue to use these books as long as i still phamacist.

Pharmacotherapy not pharmacology
Addressing the negative comments given to this book by a Dr. Doctor who's going to become yet another doctor, if you truly have your PhD and PharmD (from a halfway decent school), you would recognize the difference between pharmacology and pharmacotherapy. It's awfully troubling if you don't. In agreement with the "triDoc", Goodman and Gillman's is the superior of the 2... in terms of PHARMACOLOGY. However, if you want a very good reference for a practical approach in the treatment options of certain disease states (i.e. PHARMACOTHERAPY), this book should be your choice. It's a wonderful and much used reference. I will agree with another reviewer in that it may be worthwhile to check into buying the hand book addition first (due to its more compact size and less cost). Pharmacotherapy versus pharmacology...Hmmmmmm.

Probably the Worst Pharmacy Text I've Ever Seen
Being a Ph.D.,Pharm.D., and now in medical school, I have seen a lot of texts in the realm of pharmacology and pharmacy practice. This book is really bad. The pathophysiology is weak at best and the authors apparently felt that the pharmacology (MOA's, etc.)where not worth elaborating on. They seem to have skimmed on the "pharm" part. Unfortunately this book is the primary textbook used at a lot of pharmacy schools... if you are a pharm student, you are much better off buying Goodman and Gillman's! It will be much more useful resource throughout your career. It will also be a better study resource for exams and seminars. If you're a med student, run for your life! This book will do nothing for you. I regret buying this book and feel it is not worth the price.

In Addendum: I concur with my fellow OH reader but, as any book with the prefix, "pharm" should have been addressed. When all is said and done, as pharmacists, that is the root of our practice and knowledge. G & G does a better job at therapeutics anyway. Save your money.

Great Reference
As a pharmacy student, I found this to be an excellent reference - it covers an incredibly wide variety of topics in fantastic detail. However, the book is a little too wordy and detailed to get the overall grasp of a subject if you are covering it for the first time. But if you just need to look up that certain drug, side effect, condition or other similar information this is the book for you! There are great summary and comparison charts, easy to follow headings and a great index.

skip this and get the HANDbook instead
This is probably a good book, but you will never really know because you won't read it. Too verbose, hard to cross-reference when studying for exams and boards. Skip this book and get the Handbook by the same people and save some money and a backache to boot.
