2nd edition
I found Carolyn Buppert's second edition of Business Practice and Legal Guide to be very helpful. The additional chapters are useful for my practice and for research on a state wide level. I would recommend this book to nurse practitioners and students of the profession. It is proving to be a valuable resource for improving NP practice in Alabama. Be sure to get the second edition (2003/2004)as the first was published in 1995.

Information is outdated
As a grad student interested in starting my own practice upon graduation, I found this book to be useless. It has been reprinted by another publishing company and its original copyright date is 1999. Between then and now - 2004 - a lot of things have changed. Therefore, I would recommend that anyone who requires current information should look elsewhere. This is a very expensive book as is not helpful at all!!!

Excellent resource for any nurse practitioner
I had the pleasure of reading this book while finishing my last year in nurse practitioner school.

Ms. Buppert is a master in defining how to negotiate business contracts.

I met the author at a nurse practioner conference in Nashville Tn and she was very down to earth and truly magnificent in her knowledge of laws affecting nurse practioners.

I highly recommend this book.

Informative, helpful
This book is a great way to access state-by-state information related to NP practice. I do recommend that readers not solely rely on its information. They should still contact each state's board of nursing. I found discrepancies between Ms. Buppert's requirements for practice in Ohio and actual law.

Best I've Seen
Rapid Interpretation of EKG's is the best book on the subject that I've seen. Dale Dubin starts from the very basics and moves onto understanding the important aspects of EKG interpretation. It doesn't surprise me why this book is a pre-requisite to many ACLS courses and why it is recommended reading in countless other books and courses.

The text is in a fill in the blanks type format and doesn't cram too much information together. The important topics are covered: Arrhythmias, Blocks, Infarction, Axis, the Autonomic Nervous System, and EKG tracings are some of the chapters included. The pace is slow and steady but not to the point where it sacrifices quality. It takes a little while to get used to but it solid nevertheless. The pictures used are simple as well. There is a lot of content in this book and would make a great tool for those getting into the field of EKG's.

I was surprised as to the quality of the actual book. The pages are of better quality than the average medical textbook. This book is a great buy and worth the money.

This book is excellent. It got me through paramedic class, without it I was lost. You won't be disappointed. For $15.00 this is one of the best investments you could make.

Wonderful book for med students or anyone who needs to learn
This is a wonderful book for nursing or medical students, or anyone who needs to learn EKGs/ECGs. I'm a physician and read EKGs every day and I've never seen another text that was able to teach me the necessary concepts so painlessly. Yes, it *IS* written as if the reader is a third grader and I'm sure that offends some people who have spent their life in school or who want to make people believe that EKG reading is some magical art. Personally I enjoy being taken by the hand and shown everything like it was the first time I'd seen it. I think the teaching method presented here is quit effective for the average Joe or Josephine. Reading EKGs is not magic and this book shows you that anyone *can* really do it. I would strongly encourage anyone who has had trouble grasping the concept of EKGs to pick this book up, and that includes physicians, nurses, students, EMTs, medical technicians, respiratory therapists, heck, ANYONE who wants to learn to read EKGs! This is my nursing bible!
I am closing the end of my second semester and I could not have been so successful without this book. I absolutely love it. It is set up in and easy to read font and categorized by body system. Great way to learn!

Great Review Book
I just passed my nclex exam on my first try with minimum of 75 questions--thanks to this book-- Saunders Comprehensive Review for NCLEX-RN. I looked around many books and also spent money on some books, but I finally selected this book. This book has everything what one need to pass the exam. One of the greatest feature of this book I loved is "clarification of the contents".It makes you to understand the concept just like a teacher. You can never pass the nclex unless you have understanding of the subject matter and this book helped me in that.I wished I had bought this book in the beginning of my nursing education.

My Saving Grace!
This book is great!!
First semester, I sailed through nursing and rarely opened my textbooks.This semester - different story.You gotta study.

I (along with many other classmates) failed the first two tests this semester.So we all ran out and bought different versions of the NCLEX-RN study guides.WITHOUT A DOUBT Saunder's is the best!!I did 20 points better on the third test after just one good study group session with this book.Like others have said, you won't get throught this book in a day.Much of the content we haven't yet covered in lecture, but I know it's coming and I feel I'll have a "heads-up" when it does.

Top notch!
Without a doubt this book is a must for nursing students or those preparing to take the NCLEX. I have used it tirelessly to study for tests through nursing school and it has proven invaluable. I like that the book is split up into sections by topic. Not all NCLEX books are designed this way. I also like that at the beginning of each chapter there is an outline defining all the necessary information needed to critically think through questions. It's like having all your years of nursing school compiled into one book! Following each topic summary there are NCLEX type questions with answers that follow at the end of the chapter. Answers contain rationale as to why the given answer is the correct one. Probably most helpful are the test taking strategies. For anyone who has taken a standardized test such as the SAT or GRE you know it's all about knowing how to take the test...knowledge is secondary. FInally, the CD that comes with the book is great. In addition to the questions printed in the book, it gives you about 50 more questions per section to answer. Bottom line...get this book.

Very good book!
This book was required my first semester of nursing school and I think it was very well thought out and written. I especially loved the tables used throughout the book to help in studying for exams. I hope my school continues to have it on their required book list.

Great Text for first year nursing students
This was the textbook that I used for my first year in nursing school. It gives complete instructions with pictures and rationale's. It has wonderful little tables that teach you everything from patient teaching to signs and symptoms of diseases. I would highly recommended this book to any nursing student.

This book is very thorough!
Kozier and Erb, as my first year nursing classmates and I lovingly refer to it as, is the best thing that every happened to nursing students.

This books covers all topics that a first year nursing student could dream of needing. Each procedure is listed in a procedure box with step-by-step instructions including preperation and rationale.

The book also includes model care plans for common diseases/conditions. Boxes highlight assessment findings, critical thinking, and nursing diagnoses.

I can't say enough good things about this book! Let me put it this way, if my house were on fire, Kozier and Erb would be the first book I throw out the window!

Mandatory for all survivalists
This book MUST be in a survivalist library! It is the authoritive guide to identifying, diagnosing and treating human illness. You'll find nearly all the collected current knowledge of modern medicine within these pages.

Along with the Bible, this book is the single most important literary resource you can own. The Merck Manual is broken up into sections categorized along types of afflictions and causes, followed by appropriate treatments. Sometimes the language is clinical and can be difficult to follow without an understanding of the terms but most laymen can grasp enough to administer correct emergency medical care when necessary.

The Merck manual also proves useful when confronting your doctor about your condition or that of a loved one, it enables you to understand the diagnosis and treatment sufficiently to determine if there may be a mistake or a possible side-effect your doctor might not be willing to admit to.

I also recommend "Where there is no Doctor" and "Where there is no Dentist" to accompany this great book.

The Bible of Medicine
Dubbed the Bible of Medicine, the Merck manual is a book condensed enough to cover all the major aspects of of medicine in a text written that even though is targeted towards health care practitioners, can also be used by that layman. Written first at the end of the 19th century, the manual covers nearly most of everything in the medical field. From why epilepsy occurs to that dreadful itchy rash, the topics are concise, up to the point and easy to understand. Even though a home edition exists, the black book can be used by educated people to know anything they would like to know, with the exception of surgery.

The book is divided into an alphabetical scheme, where all the topics are featured in that order. However that can be confusing as such since the subtopics are not arranged that way. Case in point, if you wanted to search for Candidiasis of the skin, you should not search under C, but S for skin disorders and then follow things through. This can be confusing at first, but then again, this is not an encyclopedia or dictionary of medical terms. The great thing about the book is the way everything is covered in the basic schema of background, signs and symptoms and then therapy. This helps people understand the topic in the right sense and actually makes it stick to your mind for a long time. The book is also good enough to mention the doses of the drugs used to treat an ailment.

No medical clinician should be out there practicing without the Merck Manual on his desk. This is a quick reference that is essential in the day of evidence based medicine and where the patient is educated enough to be a part of his or her treatment plan and not just the silent recepient. The book can be found in the hard copy format and is available for the PALM, which makes it the best reference carried in a doctor's pocket.

Here's what I think...
A great medical reference book that has been around forever. Probably more for medical professionals than the lay person though. Also recommend "The Multifidus Back Pain Solution" if you have back pain from lifting patients around all day like I do.

The best compact summary of internal medicine
It's amazing to me that a book like this could still be current. In many ways the Merck Manual is a relic from another age, when doctors had to fit their entire medical libraries and equipment in a stagecoach and specialists were unheard of outside the largest cities.

It remains a wonderful travel reference for the physician, great vacation reading for the medical student, and an affordable way for the educated layman to pursue a personal interest in medicine.

A layman who wants to tackle the Merck Manual in its entirety will need a good college science background and a medical dictionary. While this book is very well written, it is quite dense and often assumes a basic knowledge of the medical sciences.

The Merck manual is probably the only serious medical textbook that is affordable for the general reader. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in medicine--those considering medical school will probably find it especially valuable.

Why do so few people own and use this book?
This book has been a classic and a mirror on medical knowledge
since its first publication in 1899. By studying the various
editions of the very many years it has been in existance, you obtain a look into the past and evolution of human knowledge.
The publication is regularly issued and is now it its 17th edition.

As the very many other reviews have stated it is an incomparable work for its small overall dimensions containing over 2832 pages in an easy to carry design and format. The paper is of high quality, very thin and long lasting capable of withstanding much abuse.

The breadth of the subject matter contained therein is beyond the reach of most other medical books except perhaps the excellent medical text entitled "Wilderness Medicine" authored by Auerbach. However the extremely well done full size Auerbach publication is not something you would carry while the Merck Manual is just for that type of instant reference, easy carry availability.
While the Merck Manual is not and does not pretend to discuss surgery in any depth nor teach any surgical procedures it certainly indicates when surgery is a treatment and does discuss various surgical therapy. An example is Hydrocephalus where within a short space accurate and useful discussion is imparted as to etiology and surgical remedies.
This book also contains excellent chapters on Pharmacodynamics and Clinical Pharmacology. This is unusual in a general medical text. There are very few medical conditions not addressed in this publication.
I do not understand why in the United States the Merck Manual is not found on the desk of most physicians. Perhaps its extraordinary overall scope is not as useful as more targeted texts to the specialty practiced. Certainly specialized publications, which Merck is not, are the method to conduct in depth research but to have in such a simple one volume format a fully comprehensive general medical text is a pleasure to possess and use.
Every medical practitioner should own one. For those who love well done books, it makes wonderful recreational reading as does the Auerbach Wilderness Medicine. Another book to keep nearby is DeGowin and Degowin's "Bedside Diagnostic Examination" which easily fits in a coat pocket.... ... Read more

Multiple inaccurate answers
This study guide definitely needed more attention before it was published. I also have the 5th edition study guide and there are many mistakes that appear to be a lack of proofreading before publishing this newer edition. Many incongruencies here. I would recommend the 5th edition if you want to be certain of the tool you are using.

This Study Guide Has Incorrect Answers!!!
I have found many errors in this study guide. I thought I was crazy at first, then the rest of the nursing class had the same concern. The errors are in the answer section, it will give you the wrong letter for the multiple choice answer and the correct rationale. I have contacted the publisher and received no response. Nursing School is hard enough, don't add to it with a very frustrating study guide with the wrong answers.

Good....but out of date!
"Goodman & Gilman" has been the staple of pharmacology for many years, and with good reason. While I agree with the other reviewers that it is the gold standard, in the "old days" the book was updated about every 5 years, and this one came out in 1996. Given that the book probably took a couple of years to revise, the information is close to 10 years out of date! As is stated in the Notice on p. xviii, "Medicine is an ever-changing science." I have been waiting for the 10th Edition for some time now...!

great for the right audience
This book is great for the right audience, and for the right job. This book is not for the following people/jobs: 1. Medical students. If you are a medic, and you need a text for your pharmacology class, try the simpler and less detailed books like Katzung's. The level of detail in G&G may be overwhelming. 2. As an intern/resident, you really don't have the time for such details either. A pocket guide comes in handy for your day-to-day work. This book is excellent for research purposes, especially for presentation at a conference, for pharmacists and pharmacologists, and for others directly involved in drug dispensing or manufacture.

VERY CLOSE TO BEING PERFECT
"Goldman & Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics" is one brain toasting book. It reminds me of the "Principles of Pharmacology: Basic Concepts & Clinical Applications" (edited by Paul Munson). Of course, either of these two books can serve as a reference tool; and although the latter maintains a price advantage, 'Goldman & Gilman's' is more ubiquitous.
It is rich, versatile, and presents well laid-out voluminous chapters. Anyone who reads this book will appreciate how it tackled General Therapeutics, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology.

Essential for the Pharmacology Part of the Boards!

This pharmacology book is solely responsible for my honors grades in pharmacology and on the national boards.

All topics are covered comprehensively, with far greater clinical application than most pharmacology texts.

The chapter organization makes sense, and it is well indexed. This was one of the few med school books I kept and used for years after leaving clinical medicine to go into research.

I used the book for researching medications for family and myself - information on side effects and interactions was very good.

There are almost no illustrations, and few charts, so it's not easy reading, but it is definitely worthwhile.

Why so large?
I am a University of Minnesoota student and we use this text for our introductory Human Anatomy course. (Unfortunately they came out with a new edition and I couldn't sell it back to the bookstore.) Strictly in terms of the content this book was average because I often needed more information on certain aspects of the human anatomy. My real frustration was due to the fact that I feel the publisher should have supplied a carrying case specifically designed to carry such a large, awkward book. I realize that the size contributed to larger pictures but I feel it was a bit overboard! Finally, as I mentioned before, a new edition came out very recently. The new book resembles the previous edition too much. It's unfortunate we live in such a capitalistic society as to allow such a situation to take place.. ... Read more

CECIL'S FLEXIBILITY IS MILES AHEAD
Dedicated to health since 1927, Cecil Textbook of Medicine is like wine: the longer you indulge in it, the more captivating it becomes. This 21st edition on CD-ROM exhibits Cecil's wealth of experience in a manner that will make its contemporaries to sulk with envy. It is not just the best in terms of providing succinct information, but also in terms of contents organisation. This CD-ROM remains the 'numero uno' multimedia Textbook of Medicine if flexibility of use is your priority.
The only minus this book has is that it is not as thorough (in scope) as Kelley's text is.

great outline; easily understandable
This book was first recommended to me by my consultant in internal medicine, so I decided to purchase a copy. So far I have enjoyed the book tremendously. The outlay is great; the depth of coverage is excellent, and it cuts to the meat of internal medicine without giving you distracting [and often confusing] information. Whenever I wanted a general overview of a topic, I turn to this book. For further studies, I use Harrison's. The standard is a bit high for the average medical student though. But if you are an intern, or an IM resident, you'll find the book an invaluable companion.

I know Cecil for several years.
I am using it together with Harrison for the last 20 years.

Try and compare the chapter on hyponatremia and compare it to Harrison. Try and find Carbamazepine on the list of drugs causing hyponatremia...you cannot find it in Cecil (but it is in Harrison and in the "current").
What about amiodarone and hyperthyroidsm? It is hardly mentioned in Cecil, and well described in Harrison (and in good old "current").
So, let's wait to the new edition of Harrison.

I first bought this book in Medical School and I still use it almost every week after 14 years. It is thorough and consise-- provides a bit of theory and a lot of practical information in a scholarly style. If youre a reader, get this book-- you may find yourself reading a reference book in your spare time. I would like to go to a physician who used Cecil Medicine as a reference. If youre not a natural reader, forget it and just buy the latest copy of the Washington Manual.

Neither here nor there
I bought this book before my Medicine rotation (on a deperate, misguided "what if I don't have enough information for this 'oh so important rotation'" impulse) and regretted it. I barely used it, and I much preferred Current. I found that the information was not particularly easy to find. It read more like a storybook. I felt it was time-intensive but not detailed (not like Harrison's). However, it is really a matter of personal preference. Some may like the many diagrams, flow charts, and tables that are given. It also gives a quick review of the relevant basics (pathophysiology, anatomy, etc.). My advice: by the time you get to your Medicine rotation, you should already know your study style and should choose the most appropriate book in accordance. In Depth Pediatric Reference
When I was on my PA Peds rotation, I often consulted this great reference in the medical library. Now, that I have my own book, I know its value. There is no other Pediatrics book out there that is better than this one. Don't waste your money on less expensive books like Current Pediatrics which doesn't cover half as many topics as Nelson. Also, for a great little pocket books, try Harriet Lane and Current Clinical Strategies Pediatrics 5 Minute Review.

Comprehensive Reference Work
The Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics covers just about
every possible subfield in childrens medicin. As
a lot of different authors have contributed, the style
tends to differ a lot between different sections and
chapters.

Some of the chapters, such as the one describing the
immune system, are very technical and only aimed at
the well-versed in microbiology, whereas others, like
the acutely ill child, are very descriptive and make
a compelling read.

NToP is a particularly useful reference work for
those who want to read a good description on a
particular pathology or disorder. It is not written
or intended as a diagnostic aid, but rather as
a starter to bring the reader up to speed in a
particular subject after the diagnosis has been made.

It is also not intended as "the last word" on anything.
For instance, although the pediatric cardiology section is
extensive, you will need rather more to discuss a complicated
case with the pediatric cardiologist at the local university
hospital.

Sadly, some topics are barely touched. Look for sliding
hernia or oesophagitis, for example, and you will be
disappointed.

This book is a useful investment both for medical
practicioners and the loving parents to which it is
dedicated.

Great features, further improvement possible
I don't think I need to explain how great the "Nelson's Textbook of Pediatrics" is, so I focus on the features as software.

This product is based on a java applet and for Windows and Macintosh. For each of the chapter, about 30 review questions are available in a multiple-choice format. The answer is not only with alphabetical one, but also with a concise explanation with a link to the textbook. I find this feature very helpful. I haven't checked "Nelson Review of Pediatrics, 2nd ed., Behrman,R.E.CW.B.Saunders , 2000 263p", but the publisher says that this feature is based on this book.

Update service is available. Every time when you launch the program, you are asked whether it checks the updates. Full access to NelsonPediatrics.com for further information is also available, after you sign up on the web site. After all, the support service is awesome.

However, there are some things you should know as windows users, which is why I put 4 stars. First, you are required to use Netscape or Internet Explorer as your default browser. The browser must be new enough, too. Second, you must insert the CD-ROM every time you use this program, since it doesn't install all the files to your hard disk unlike the previous edition. Third, if you are using localized Windows other than English, you may have to replace some files. The procedure is as follows, quoted from the mail I got immediately from the support center:

Nelson's Textbook of Pediatrics
This textbook is the gold standard of pediatric books. I used mine all through medical school and still use it in my practice. I highly recommend this text to students, residents and physcians. The thought provoking text and excellent illustrations make this a must have book. I couldn't practice without mine.

A Classic Textbook of Pediatrics
No medical text can ever be comprehensive, or completely up to date. The science of medicine advances so quickly that books are outdated the day they are published.

Nonetheless, "Nelson's Textbook of Pediatrics" comes as close as possible. Along with another other classic pediatric text, "Rudolph's Pediatrics," Nelson's represents the best of pediatric medicine in America. Every pediatrician has a favorite, but Nelson's is the gold standard.

Nelson's is particularly strong in pediatric cardiology and immunology. For the latest in infectious disease, see the "Red Book" published by the American Academy of Pediatrics. For neonatology, developmental pediatrics, and the surgical sub-specialties, consult specialty books in those fields. For congenital malformations and syndromes, "Smiths's" (by Jones!) is a good place to start. The Mercedes of Undergraduate A&P Books
I used this book as a student, and refer to it frequently as a reference. This 1000 + page text explains the structure and function of the complicated, detailed human body in a logical, easy to understand manner. Everything about this book is user friendly including the presentation order, the writing, and the graphics. In each chapter, Marieb presents the big picture before zeroing in on the details. For the body's systems, (digestive, endocrine, respiratory, etc.) Marieb overviews the system, and then explains the gross and fine anatomy and associated physiology.

Here are a few of the many features I find impressive: * Graphics: Very impressive photographs and illustrations. The electron micrographs are spectacular. * Tables and charts - These greatly simplify the learning of complex concepts. For example, in the immune system chapter, there's a good table explaining the first and second lines of defense. * Medical applications - Common diseases are overviewed in the appropriate chapter, for example epilepsy is discussed in the neural integration chapter. There are occasional basic pharmacology and sports applications, such as diuretics and blood doping, respectively. * Making connections feature - Marieb shows how the system being studied relates to the other systems in the body.

This is an absolutely state of the art A&P book, and each edition is better than the last. It's expensive, but you get a lot for your money. It may be too detailed for some, who would be better served by her "Essentials of Anatomy and Physiology" text. If you're an A&P student, I recommended you use her workbook as well. I've found that working through the exercises really helps this information stick.

Great A&P book, written in friendly style
Elain Marieb presents a really wonderful anatomy and physiology text. It provides a colorful feast of pictures and charts for the visual learner without skimping on the important details in the text. Marieb's writing style is friendly, informal and descriptive. Her writing can get quite theoretical at times but she always comes back to earth with a common example.

This book is best suited for health sciences students (medicine, nursing, physical therapy, pharmacy etc.) as the book is littered with clinical applications. However students taking A&P at high school and undergrad level are well catered for. The book works systematically, from basic biochemistry to the organ systems and system interactions. Genetics and inheritance is also covered briefly.

What else is on offer? A large glossary (invaluable to an A&P text!)and a prefix/suffix table. There are chapter summaries and test quizzes. Some may enjoy the CD ROM computer interaction aspects, there's also access to Elain's internet site for A&P students.

Some of the material gets quite tough as the book progresses, but with re-reading and reference to other texts, students should quickly get a handle on the material. I previously owned a copy of the condensed "Essentials of human A&P" and traded it in for the full edition. I don't recommend students get the condensed version unless they are confining their A&P study to high school or 100 level college study.

In conclusion, this is good first textbook and greatly aids in one's course of study. Marieb takes the unimaginable complexity of the human body and presents it in a fun, relatively easy-to-read, lively text.

Great for A and P students, must buy
I used this book for both my Anatomy and Physiology class in undergrad. I found this book to be pretty easy to understand. Of course, at first it is overwhelming to know how much you have to remember for the test. At least, writing style of this book made A and P easier to learn. The material is presented in organized fashion. However, if you really want to know the type of questions asked on college Anatomy and Physiology Exams get the following which is on amazon: Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations Volume 1(ISBN: 0971999619) and Volume 2 (ISBN: 0971999627). These two helped me to get A's on my exams. The textbook and the two study guides are well worth the money since they helped me to pass with high grades the first time. I was recommened the study guides from my cousin who used them for his A and P class and found them to be great for test preparation. I give each book 5 stars.

Yes, but...
This book is an outstanding achievement for a single author, and I have learned a great deal from it. I like the graphics, the layout, and the wealth of information. However, I do find many paragraphs and passages in this book difficult to follow, usually because crucial details are missing. See, for example the explanations of ossification (pages 181-183) and the countercurrent mechanism in the kidneys (pages 1022-1026). It took me less time to digest a whole book on the immune system than the corresponding chapter in this book (chapter 22).

There is a web site associated with the book, which gives the student an opportunity to ask questions. I submitted a couple of simple questions several weeks ago, but have yet to receive a reply.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any A & P book at this level that would be better.

Excellent textbook and a must buy
The author of this book is an excellent writer. She makes learning anatomy and physiology easier. This book is divided into so many topics like skeletal system, nervous system, circulatory system. This book helped me as a undergraduate A and P student. It helped me form the foundation of my knowledge. However, if you want a really good study guide that focuses on key topics seen on college A and P exams, I highly recommend the following: Key Facts for Anatomy and Physiology by Patrick Leonardi

The best book for VR preparation
I run private tutoring courses for the MCAT, and I would say that this book is arguably the best source for MCAT Verbal Reasoning questions, aside from the real exams from AAMC. (Needless to say, I use this book in my course.) The writer accurately captures most aspects of the real exam, including passage length, question wording, distribution of question types, and ambiguity of the correct answers. The only major flaw that I find with this book is that some answer choices are not well supported (even taking into account the fact that the correct answers on the MCAT are supposed to be somewhat ambiguous). In some cases, there are blatant errors in the question stem or stated correct answers, or, more rarely, two equally correct answer choices. For this reason, I would rate this book 4.5 stars, but since Amazon doesn't let me do that, I will give it 5 stars. :) On the actual MCAT, the incorrect answer choices are usually a little more differentiated from the correct answer. These mistakes and imperfections are frequent enough to be a little annoying, but not abundant or major enough to topple this book of the pedestal of being the best VR preparation book out there. Kaplan's and Princeton Review's materials do not quite compare (especially Kaplan's, which contain too many explicit detail questions). Keep in mind that the questions in this book are probably going to be slightly more difficult than the real MCAT questions, which are not quite as tricky. Have fun and good luck.

An Excellent Guide for Verbal
The verbal is by far one of the most difficult passages around for MCAT test takers, and I certainly fall into this category. If you want to do well on it, you must PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! The examkrackers verbal is an excellent tool that will give you the necesary practice. Try to get your hands on a lot of verbal passages (be careful, don't buy any of the teaching solutions MCAT products, this is one of those garbage prep materials the EK author was talking about) and work through the problems. Familiarize yourself with the common questions that frequently pop up on these verbal passages, and don't fill in the obvious answers. Practice and prepare, and you will do fine.

RE: Better off with AAMC practice materials!, NOT!!!!!!!!!!
The AAMC practice materials are outdated compared to the real thing. They are too easy and you will be unpleasantly surprised on the real thing if your prep materials are from AAMC. Some times I think they want you to do badly, since it's their job to weed people out. For prep use the most difficult passages possible, then you will be fine. Let me leave you with one thought in mind: every next MCAT was always more difficult then the previous one.

The Best Prep Verbal Book for the MCAT
I tought that EK Verbal 101 was the best prep book for the VR section of the MCAT. The passages were as long as the real exam, about the same level of difficulty and type of questions. I liked how the exams usually got harder half-way through, and each passages had more and more questions -- that's they way it's for me on the real MCAT. I mostly received 6's on my VR practice exams, and I ended up with a 8 on the real test -- not bad for someone who has only been using English as a formal language for 4 years, and is a Native Spanish-Speaker.
I am re-taking it, and I plan to buy the book again!!!

Here is the answer MCAT VR preparation.
This book has perhaps bridged the gap between me and medical school. In July I bought 101 Passages and diligently took a full length verbal section about once every three days as part of my preparation and it made the difference between medical school in the Carribean and becoming a viable candidate for some first tier U.S. medical schools. I also carefully studied Jon's advice in his Verbal Reasoning study guide and followed it religiously. It helped improve my score substantially. So why is this book so great? First, the text is identical in size and font to real thing, so you feel perfectly comfortable and familiar with the appearance of actual passages, question stems, and answers on test day. Second, the passage topics were right on the money -boring (cabinet making, charitable trust management, etc.), irrelevent to medicine, and challenging enough. Third, passage length was identical to that which you encounter on the real thing. Fourth, the answer choices are ambigious and you never really feel good about your answers -that is the essence of MCAT verbal. Dave perfectly captures that in 101 Passages. Fifth, there are 11 full length practice sections, which help you master your timing and slowly but surely improve you score. Sixth, Jon is pretty helpful on his website and will respond to most of your questions and give you that personal support that makes him kind of seem like a coach whose on your side. Lastly, there's nothing else out there that comes close to 101 Passages. Get this book to improve you verbal score. To really ace the verbal, carefully study the lectures in the thinner Examkracker's Verbal Reasoning study guide. Force yourself to adopt Jon's strategy. It will help you. If you do nothing else, remember these two points of advice: (1) finish the verbal sections no matter what you do, and (2) read for the main idea and be sure you have it in your head before you look at the questions. For the math challenged...
I bought this book for a math for nurses class. I took the class because even after all the math classes I've taken, math is still a struggle for me and this was a last effort before I start nursing school. THIS BOOK IS WONDERFUL! For the first time ever, "I get it." I feel totally comfortable with calculations now. The book gives you several different methods to solving and you can pick the one that works best for you. It's easy to read and has great examples. 5 stars!!!!!

Great Book!
I would STRONGLY recomend this book to anyone entering the nursing and/or paramedicine field(s). I used this text during a recent course in college and found there was no need for an instructor! Extremely easy to understand with plenty of examples! The text comes with a cd, although I never used it.

Dosage Calculations 6th edition
This book is an excellent tool for learning to convert dosage calculations. Whether you are a beginner or wanting to brush up on your existing skills, the exercises contained in the book gradually become more difficult allowing you to skip the easier questions if necessary and jump straight to the more advanced problems. There are plenty of review problems to work out that ensure you are knowledgable of the material before you move on to the next chapter. There are clear, easy to follow instructions on various methods of calculating dosages so that you may choose the method that works best for you. There are word problems that portray actual scenarios that might be encountered in your career, rather than just hypothetical ideas.
