Pathophysiology Made Clear
This is an outstanding textbook of the subject of pathophysiology. This can be, and is, a difficult subject to grasp the concepts of but this book makes it easier to learn. Gone are the days of boring pictures that don't really help the learning process. There is a good combination of artwork and photographs to illustrate what the text is saying. I am a self-taught student in this field and this book has helped me gain a good understanding of the topic.

The chapters all begin relatively basic but move into the areas of in depth knowledge. There are a number of charts and graphs that basically sum up what a portion of a chapter is talking about. It is interesting how this book can be used as a resource text and as an initial learning tool. Whether this book is being used for self study or for a course it is important for the student to have a foundation in anatomy and physiology so they can understand the content better.

I really like how this book is very applicable to those who provide emergency medical care. I highly recommend this book to those who are new to the subject of pathophysiology because if its ease to use, its quality and quantity of content. I have benefitted a great deal from this book.

A Lifelong Investment
McCance and Huether's Pathophysiology book is a lifelong investment. I bought it for a pathophys. class and continue to use it long after the class is over. It is thorough and easy to understand. Great illustrations and diagrams. I would recommend it to anyone in the healthcare field.

Great Book
I have been using the book and the information is easy to understand and is well organized. The pictures are expecially helpful and make the material easier to study. The anatomy and physiology chapters also provide a good review. This is a book I plan to keep and use for a reference.

Pathophysiology
I have been using this textbook for about 2 months and find it to be one of the poorest written books that I have come across. The authors fail to realize that the book is written for students and often introduce uncommon terms that are either never defined or defined several pages later. With that being said, it doesn't help that the book doesn't have a glossary.

I know that your purchase options may be limited because the college you are attending requires that you use this book. However, if you must purchase it, also purchase another Patho book to explain what this book is trying to say. ... Read more

Best entry level book
This book by Charlie Janeway is considered to be one of the best books for entry level students. His colleagues say Dr. Janeway cherished every moment that he spent in shaping this book since he took utmost joy in teaching and training students. Eventhough he is no more physically, his book will be read and remembered by almost every student in Immunology. The treatment of subject, arrangement of topics and the figures in this book are at the very best. I am sure that readers will be able to absorb the basic principles in a systematic way with sound experimental insights which will be with them forever.
You also have the advantage of seeing the immune system as a friend as well as a foe. This book beautifully explains how immune system protects us from infections as well as creates major health problems when it doesn't work properly. This way of learning Immunology helps you learn the subject with big picture in mind. I strongly recommend this book for every student who takes introductory or intermediate level course in Immunology. After all, Immunology is one of the most fascinating scientific disciplines to work on.

Accurate, clear and comprehensive immunological knowledge
Janeway's Immunobiology is probably the best immunology book that someone really interested in immunology should take to the mythical desert island. One can enjoy it by its clarity from the basic graduate courses, and then keep reading it when doing research and pursuing hypothesis on the most advanced immunological topics. Many times I have found better organized and complete information on this book (even the old editions!) than on the latest reviews on specialized journals. The intense and careful work displayed to promote the real understanding on the concepts and the relations between immune components is impressive. Even more, the success in explanation is such that the authour takes the risk to have his book neglected as "too easy" by first time readers. However, immunology researchers in contact with the often chaotic and contradictory immunological literature can really appreciate the incredible amount of critical work invested and the intellectual gift of the author (authors) to abstract complex immune phenomena into nicely designed and biologically precise "cartoons". The focus on the evolutionary and functional consequences/origins of the immune mechanisms and structures makes Janeway's book one of the most refreshing and valuable voices in a sometimes too-technically oriented discipline. An impressive accomplishment never praised enough.

a good start
This is an excellent primer for anyone wishing to learn more about immunology. For the more advenced student, Bill Paul's Fundamental Immunology is a must.

This book rocks!
This is by far the most well written immunology text I have encountered. Even the most difficult concepts are presented in the most understandable manner. This book is very extensive in the material it covers and is highly recommended for an advanced undergraduate student or as an introductory graduate text. By far the feature most appealing to me are the extensive images and cartoons used in this text, used quite effectively to elucidate even the most difficult of topics. This visual presentation style combined with the extensive and highly readble coverage of relevant material make this a must have for any serious student. The book is also updated frequently I believe a new edition is on the way slated to be publsihed in April 2004.

This is the greatest book for Pharmacology!!!!!!
This book was my bible for Pharmacology. Even though "Goodman and Gillman" contains everything there is to know about the subject, which medical school student needs to know all of that. The book first starts each chapter with a review of fundamental physiology of the normal body. Next it describes the drug and its effects on the body. Next comes the clincal pharamcology of the drugs. The understanding of pharmacology from reading this book is unparalleled.

The "Bible" for Medical school pharmacology
Katzung is brilliant. This text was an absolute bible for my med school pharmacology course & on rotations. If it's not in the Katzung book you probably don't need to know it. An absolute must to do well on the boards.

Fantastic book, but too unwieldy for medical students.
This book contains way to much information for students in a semester-long pharmacology course. The book is accurate and in depth, but contains way too much detail for medical professionals.

Still a must have for primary providers
I previously lauded the 3rd edition. Now I am extremely impressed by the latest edition. There are more pictures and elaborate details about diagnosis and treatment. But what I consider the best improvement are the expanded tables in each chapter. These tables detail recommended evaluations, treatments and differential diagnosis.
THE BEST GOT BETTER

Detailed yet practical
I have used this book both for Dermatology class, in my dermatology rotation and in other rotations. It is a great resourse to just look up information. It has great pictures and is easy to sit and read and understand.

I can say I have definately gotten my money out of this book.

A must have for the primary care provider...
...for it is easy to use, written very clearly and it has wonderful pictures.
From the moment it was recommeded to me as a student to now, I have used it just about everyday.
Just as an example, Habif has a wonderful chapter on Acne that allows the primary care provider to manage this condition from its mildest to the more complicated forms. He describes the condition and the treatment options giving us a great resource for care.

Simply the best
This book receives a rating of five stars. It is clearly written, easy to understand, comprehensive, and contains practical information accompanied by hundreds of clear color photographs. This book is very helpful to me in my practice and I refer to it often. It really is a standard of excellence. I can't recommend the book more highly.

Got a few minutes?
"The One Minute Manger" by Kenneth Blanchard and Spencer Johnson teaches the readers the three skills to achieving effective management. Although the keys to being an effective and successful manager, as described by Blanchard and Johnson, seems unbelievably simple, they will strike an understanding chord among most people who have ever managed and supervised employees. Not because managers typically follow the principles, but precisely because these simple principles are ones that they intuitively know they should be practicing yet do not because of lack of conviction in the methods, worry about changing management styles, low level of interest, or apprehension that they will take too much time.

Not to fear, Blanchard and Johnson address these concerns in their short simple book. The allegory starts off with a young man in search of an effective manager. Initially disillusioned by the managers he encounters, who are only results-oriented at the expense of the employees or only people-oriented at the expense of the organization, the young man discovers The One Minute Manager. The young man learns from The One Minute Manager and the people whom he manages the philosophy of the one-minute management style. The authors gradually convince the readers through examples, anecdotes, explanations, and quotable quotes why and how their three principles, when followed appropriately, actually work. A brief guideline list accompanies each of the three management skills: the "one minute goal setting," "one minute praising," and "one minute reprimand." There is even a concise flow chart to help solidify the management principles into one page near the end of the book; no doubt, designed to be cut-out or photocopied and posted in every manager's office. By the end of the short 60 minutes required to finish the book, most readers will be convinced to at least test out the method. After all, the title of the book already suggests that time commitment is not an issue; one can become an effective manager by investing a short 60-second of time. When one reads the book, this really translates to several 60-second intervals per day, but the amount of time will be much less than what most managers are used to.

More effective management in significantly less time? Is it possible? The authors certainly make a compelling yet uncomplicated and clear case for this. One does have to wonder if this is too easy. Will it work for managing all types of people in all types of organizations? How about the slackers? Or the employee who is the wrong fit for the job, doesn't have the appropriate training, or lacks motivation? How about the company with a long tradition of top-down management style? The book doesn't get mired in the details or specifics of every possible variation or situation; instead it attempts to provide the general strategies of effective management. The simple message of the book is to focus on making people feel valued which will lead to greater self-motivation and increased productivity for the individual and organization. As the One Minute Manager best described it, "People who feel good about themselves produce good results." And because they are not difficult to understand, learn, or implement, the skills can be readily used by most managers immediately.

The book is not only for managers of people. The message from the book is relevant to anybody interacting with people or when managing your own work and life. For example, I can utilize the skills to not only manage the people who report to me, but also in working with my colleagues or my supervisor, although the lesson on reprimanding may be less applicable in such situations. The most useful setting to apply the skills, perhaps, is when teamwork is involved, such as in committees, meetings, and group projects. This is when setting goals and timelines are critical and working effectively with colleagues, including giving praise and constructive criticism, is paramount to success. Furthermore, I can even see me being a One Minute Manager to myself, be it in the work environment, personal life, educational pursuits, or participation in hobbies. Who wouldn't want to be happier and have better results in all of these activities? I wouldn't mind impressing my boss more, fulfilling all my New Year's resolutions, or running a marathon in 3 hours and 15 minutes. After reading "The One Minute Manger", most readers will want to be a One Minute Manager tomorrow.

Simple and Fast
A quick read because the concepts it describes are simple yet powerful. "The One Minute Manager" has evolved into a management classic since its first edition in 1981. Managers will take three precepts from this book: Efficient Goal Setting with employees, Praise, and Reprimands. In other words, make sure your people know precisely what they are to do, and then give them feedback whether they meet those expectations or not. That's it. Simple and effective. It takes an hour to read "The One Minute Manager", consider it an investment.

Here's what I think about it...
The book is not a comprehensive management tool but nonetheless contains good basic concepts all managers should use or at least give a great deal of thought to. A short, easy read that has many nuggets of wisdom, I give it five stars. Other self-help books I liked include "The Multifidus Back Pain Solution."

Just A Minute
The ideas in One Minute Manager are very effective for anyone who feels stretched to the limit by the daily demands of modern business. The advice is both simple and to the point so it means less time analyzing the lesson and more time implementing tips that can improve your overall performance. I highly recommend this book to seasoned managers as well as those who aspire to join the ranks of management.

Rat Race Relaxer: Your Potential & The Maze of Life by JoAnna Carey is another great book for companies to share with employees because it offers entertaining stories and goal oriented advice about improving your workplace and your life.

Best management style out there--Bar None!

An okay book on physiology, but...
The whole book itself is way too long-winded. Simple concepts which could be explained in one or two sentences are instead used to fill up pages of text; not only that, but the same concepts are repeated over and over again throughout different sections of the book. I guess the authors like to hear themselves talk. And then there's the annoying sections like the one where they go on and on about something elaborately called "Einthoven's Law" which is nothing more than simple KVL from basic circuit theory. Stuff like that is just plain annoying, because it feels like you're wasting your time reading a long-winded, substance-wanting text. They should consider renaming the book from "textbook of medical physiology" to "physiology for dummies." Here's an excerpt from the book:

"If the net potential of lead I is positive, it is plotted in a positive direction along the lead I axis. Conversely, if this potential is negative, it is plotted in the negative direction."

Numerous passages like the one above make you feel frustrated and annoyed. Time is a valuable thing to waste; I would suggest getting a more condensed and better organized book on physiology.

Very complete, but best used as a reference
You can't really go too wrong with this text, especially as a reference.

My main problem with Guyton is that the writing style is often soporific, tedious, and rambling. Parts of the section on heart action almost sounded like a parody of a really awful college lecture.

For anyone planning to study physiology systematically, I would strongly recommend Berne and Levy's *Physiology* over Guyton. The Berne book is equally comprehensive but has much better layout and genuinely good writing.

Helpful, readable reference
As a beginning pharmacy student, I found this book in the library while trying to look up info I couldn't find in my other physiology texts. I was impressed enough to order my own copy out of my measly little broke-student budget. It's thorough and readable, and while its focus isn't really exactly what I usually need these days (since I'm focusing more on the drug therapy aspects of things) it's still a great reference. You may not use it all the time, but it's a good idea to know where you can find one--in the library, in a friend or roommate's collection, etc.

Great reference for understanding physiology
I was first introduced to this text while going through cardiovascular technician training, as it was one of many texts signed out to us. I found it to be a great reference while in school and referred to it frequently when I had questions or needed clarification on various aspects of general physiology.
After I graduated from my program, I purchased the updated version for use in my continuing education and for research for classes I teach. I especially like some of the "off-the-wall" topics included in this text that may not be normally found in other books (for example, basic dive and altitude medicine).
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a full-coverage reference on physiology.

An excellent first textbook in Anaesthetics.
This book is well-presented, easy to read and, with the case scenarios presented at the end of each chapter, puts some of the most important clinical considerations in anaesthetics into a truly practical way. It is relatively small too, so that it is portable and can be referenced easily. All in all, an excellent book.

A "must have" for anesthesia
My absolute favorite anesthesia textbook. It is concise and very readable. A pure joy when one doesn't feel like trodding through Miller.

Excellent for beginners and board preparation
I have used this book during my residency along with Paul G. Barash (clinical anesthesiolgy). This book has value no matter what stage of your residency you are at. Each and every line is important. What you get out of it in your first year is different from what you get out of it in your final year. It is very helpful for the boards . You can get tired of reading massive chapters in Miller or Barash, so instead you can do the same chapter from Morgan and get concise information. Thus you won't feel daunted when it comes time to take on the larger detailed version in Miller!! A must buy during your first year of residency, along with the massachusets hand book.

This book is for your Entire Family; it is a survival guide.
When our family first learned that our Mother had Alzheimer disease, we were devastated. After we all read "The 36-Hour Day", there was a great deal of relief. Although Alzhemier and other dementing illnesses can seem catastrophic, this book reads like a freindly family doctor givng you straight forward, no-nonsense advice. It covers all aspects of dealing with the family member, from explaining just what dementia is and how it can appear, to how you can deal with it appropriately without losing your patience or embarrasing your family member. Medical help, daily care, medical problems, behavior, mood, legal issues, common compassion and basic 'rules of thumb' are thoroughly covered. Several "examples" of previous family incidents are mentioned with thoughts on how to address each and every one. Great care has been crafted into this book and I highly recommend it. You will feel better, thus making the family member you are helping feel better.

Provides direction and help for caretakers and loved ones
A truly remarkable book. It is well written, and very easy to read and follow, providing a background in this disease and what can/will happen to those afflicted. Providing extremely helpful insights and strategies for those of us who are caregivers, spouses, sons, daughters, and other family and friends. Personally, this book helped me to understand what was happening to my mother, helped me to be more understanding and less frustrated and annoyed with her. This book provides a great deal of insight and allows the reader to get a "feel" for the current situation and possible future situations. I have recommended this book to my personal physician to pass along to her other patients who may be in the same position as I am.

The Answers I Have Been Searching For
It doesn't give medical advice, it doesn't give technical advice, although it provides resources for seeking such advice. What it does give are explanations and insights into the thinking of brain impaired persons, explanations for their behaviors, and advice on how to manage and cope with being their caregiver.

These are exactly the answers I have been searching for. So many of my father's actions, reactions and behaviors are profiled in this book, and it's becoming clear that his decline had started many years ago with smaller incidents that we as his family had dismissed. The path of progression can be tracked, and even predicted. It will be helpful to know what's coming next and be prepared. But most important to me is the understanding of why. Being able to understand the why of his behavior helps me a great deal in being able to let go of the anger and to cope better with the situation that has recently escalated to horrific.

In trying to manage the situation I have started taking anti-anxiety meds, as well as antidepressants and high blood pressure med. I have done all that I can to make changes within myself, yet things have gotten progressively worse. I am beginning to understand that these changes have been part of the problem in a sense in that I have become "unpredictable" to him in not reacting the way he expects me to.

A Fairly Clinical Approach to Alzheimer's Caregiving
More than 3 million Americans are currently over 80 years old, and their numbers are expected to double by 2025. As the number of very old expands, the incidence of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia will increase proportionately. Already at least 1 in 4 Americans cares for an elderly relative; in just a few years, a greater proportion will assume the mantle of caregiver to a dementia patient.

I do not find this thought comfortable, nor did I find The 36-Hour Day comfortable reading. As the caregiver of an elderly person with Alzheimer's, I found this volume helpful with specific problems that often accompany Alzheimer's disease but much in need of updating in other areas, such as caring for the caregiver. Going to a counselor or buying a new dress may have been reasonable options in 1999. For many caregivers in 2004, they are too expensive to be considered.

Recommended primarily as an overview of what to expect with specific dementia-related problems.

This book has helped me to recovery from a painful condition
_Approximately five years ago I had a complete set of x-rays performed by an orthopedic surgeon, and was diagnosised with arthritis, painful heel spurs, and severe plantar fasciatis. Since that time I have tried all of the arthritis prescriptions, and I could not tolerate the side effects. Many visits later to a chiropractor and a poditrist I was still unable to be mobile without severe pain. Water aerobics seem to keep me active, but did not correct the problems. I have spent hundreds of dollars on orthoditics and corrective shoes and no relief.

As I walked into the public library one day my eyes fell on this book sitting on the shelf next to the check out stand. I could not believe my eyes since it seems to have been written especially for me. This coincidence put me on my road to recovery. I have been doing the exercises about six months now, and I feel a hundred percent better. I now have a copy of this book in my personal library. I feel it is very important to read the complete book, and to keep it handy for reference and inspiration. I have a new lease on life due to the discovery of this book.

Egoscue's book appears both effective and economical.
After two sessions with Egoscue's exercises, I've still spent less than $25, I can hold my head straighter, and my uneven gait from mis-aligned hips is much improved. Two sessions at the physical therapist would have cost $36 in hot-packs alone, never mind the cost of actual therapy. And I would have been treated for the hip or the shoulder, but probably not both.

Egoscue recommends reading the introductory chapters, then moving to the chapters specific to your needs. This advice works well with one possible exception: you may miss the story about the woman so misaligned that after 45 minutes in a relaxed, static back posture, she went into muscle spasm. This story indicates that it might be wise for people with considerable pain or strong mis-alignment to have someone with them during the first days or weeks of doing these exercises, to begin with the minimum times recommended for each exercise, and to expect to take longer to reach maintenance.

Egoscue might also have provided directions on how to get up after lying in some of these positions: I've found it helps to pull my legs in toward my torso, then turn onto my side before I try raising my head and upper body.

All in all, Egoscue's book appears very helpful. I now have high hopes for my own recovery from various chronic muscle ailments and recommend the book (I'm getting ready to have Amazon.com mail a copy to my sister right now).

Better than yoga for 35 year old runner with hip pain
I was on the verge of giving up running 4 miles several times a week due to hip pain. Yoga did not fix the problem. The hip routine reduced the pain noticeably the first day, and by the second day I only noticed the pain upon waking, before doing the exercises. I am on the fifth day, even the morning pain is fading, and I am able to run. My stride when running seems to be more efficient and shock-absorbing, because of the increased motion in my hip. It's more comfortable. I have been told twice that I am looking healthier than usual, which I think is due to my posture improving. I am also tending to sit up straighter at my desk. I'll still do yoga for muscle tone and balance, but Egoscue is the best for flexibility, and the exercises are easier than most yoga postures.

This is an excellent book! A true solution to chronic pain, not just hype and promises never kept. Egoscue is right on the money with his excercises. In my humble opinion, the exercises fire muscle spindle cells which are receptors in the muscles and joint mechano-receptors which are receptors in joints. Increasing the firing of receptors increases the firing of impulses to the brain. Increased impulses to brain equals less pain.

FOOT PAIN GONE!!???
For about a year I was suffering from extreme foot pain. My foot didn't always hurt, but standing in certain positions I was incapable of bearing weight, my ankle would hurt so excruciatingly I would fall to the ground in pain. But as a full time mom of two small children, the time necessary to go to some Doctor was time I didn't know how to find. So I tried the Egoscue method. WELL it was a miracle. After a week of doing the exercises less than diligently and reducing the times on everythign considerably, the foot pain is GONE. I am beyond amazed. I've even purposefully stepped in ways used to hurt excruciatingly to see if they still did hurt, nope!!! I plan on halfheartedly doing the maintenance exercises. Great Summer Reading
This book is astounding.Told as a thriller, it shows why, unbelievably, your pharmacist cannot tell you where your prescription drugs have come from - they have no idea.

An amazing read
This is a book about an terribly important story--how our most expensive and important medicines are being counterfeited and debased and then sold by good pharmacies to unsuspecting citizens. But it is also a wonderfully exciting read, the kind of narrative nonfiction that doesn't come along very often. The author tells of a rag-tag group of investigators who have personality to spare, and an amazing young DA who decided to go after the counterfeiters in southern Florida. It's an exciting chase story, with lots of personality and humor.
Even though the theme is scary, the story is riveting.

Great Text
This is a great textbook. I am an athletic training student who has used this book. Other good books to use with this one are Evaluation of Orthopedic and Athletic Injuries by Chad Starkey and Special Tests for Orthopedic Examination.

One of the "Classics" for athletic trainers
This book by Hoppenfeld is a truly a standard for the athletic training profession. The text is easy to follow and the figures and diagrams are very clear. The book is laid out well and lends itself to study easily. Every athletic training student should have a copy--to study for the NATABOC exam and to use as a daily reference in the "real world" following certification.

Holy Smokes!!
Get it if you are looking for a good reference book to put on your desk that tells you how to locate various anatomical parts of the body (bones, ligaments, muscles, boney landmarks, various nerves and vessels too). Good pictures and clear explanations make this book a classic. Also liked "Treat Your Own Knees" if you have a lot of knee pain patients.

Awesome book on orhopedics
The drawings in this book are very clear and effective in explaining the specific anatomical landmarks in the body (i.e. anatomical snuff box, lunate, etc) in order to give a highly effective orthopedic examination. The book is very easy to read without making you read sentences over again in order to understand like in some other texts. The L3, L4, L5, S1 and C5, C6, C7 neurological levels are explained with much detail on how to do muscle tests, reflexes and where to place the pinwheel for dermatome evaluation. This is a must buy for medical students and chiropractic students alike. Being a doctor of chiropractic, I found this book excellent for the boards, especially the neurological level section and orthopedic tests. However, be careful on National board Part 4 exam when doing certain orthopedic tests, make sure to also reference Evan's book (isbn: 0838578535) because some indications for ortho test are a little different and performed slightly differently in both these books. In any event, if you want help with nat'l board review, get the following.

Children won't seem a problem with this book
Everyone recommended big fat books of pediatrics, with lots of words and little answers. But this book is all you want and need to know about in your pediatrics rotations. With diagnostic essentials, getting through diseases just gets a lot easier, and with therapeutical answers, it just builds good doctors. I specially liked the chapter on antimicrobials and vaccines, so essential in pediatric care. Definitely a must have for a good medical student with lot to learn and too little time (at the end, that's what medicine is all about). All my medschool classmates just wanted to have my book.

What you need to understand surgery in a concise way
Surgery, like everything in medicine, has a language of it's own. And when you, as a medical student, get to the surgical wards, you'll need a book to understand what is going on around you. Written in a pleasant way, it is divided in three practical sections: Surgery's general principles, general surgery and surgical specialities, just like in med school.
They give you a refreshment on basic sciences concepts critical for understanding surgical pathologies and then they tell you essentials of diagnosis and treatment of such pathologies.
Therefore, I recommend the book for medical students and General Practitioners who will need to answer the "Should I call the surgeon ? "question. Not very good descriptions on surgical procedures, and I would like it to have better illustrations, but I think it's worth the money.

Pleasant Reading!
This book provides a great review in all subjects of surgery in a concise way. The reading is easy and pleasant. Although, the last edition is from 1994, it's been still up-to-date. Great purchase!

A Must Have
A well written and edited book. Contains material that is quite focussed and essential, specially for those preparing for examinations. Although written more than seven years back it contains facts that some of the very popular books mentioned only lately in their recent editions.

That it is not coming out with another edition is a serious drawback. For this reason it is fast loosing the edge it has over other books.

Other shortcoming is lack of colored illustrations and photographs.

Not a textbook of surgery
I think this book might be helpful for those people who are looking for a book that gives you the surgical point of view of the disease, it doesn't focus exclusively on the surgical procedures and treatment, but it takes its time to explain a little more about the pathophysiology, symptoms and signs etc., of the illness,it's more like a book to start with.
