A Strong Resource
I graduated in 1996, and I have been practicing as a mental health pratitioner for three years. I located this book on-line and read the reviews which prompted me to order it. The book is a great primary souce, but it is imperative to read the answers and study all of the areas mentioned--even the wrong answers. I received my results and passed on my first attempt. I highly recommend this book!

Helpful, but not comprehensive enough to be an encyclopedia
This text is helpful to prepare for certification, but it is not comprehensive enough to be an 'encyclopedia'. I found this text useful for a portion of the psychology based questions, but far less useful for social work and sociology based questions. DSM IV TR related topics were underemphasized. This text could especially use more personality disorder related material.

Read it & pass the NCE!
I used this book as my primary study resource and passed the exam on the first try. It's very comprehensive, and though the author recommends reading the book from cover to cover, be sure to give yourself ample time to study the chapters at the end of the book. Rosenthal's style is easy to read (entertaining, even), and his examples and mnemonic devices facilitate memorization. If you hope to pass the NCE on the first try, I highly recommend this book.

Best on the market
After looking through other classmate's materials and finding them lacking I purchased the encyclopedia of counseling and the cassette series. I just got my test results and am very pleased. If you want to pass the NCE, Dr Rosenthal's materials are the best I've seen. He provides a lot of detail and the nmemonics he includes really help.

Sleep the night before the exam
If you want to be confident about taking the exam use this book along with the tapes. Rosenthal explains the exam process and indicates subjects that may be covered and what you may need to study further. He makes the various subjects understandable and gives you great memory jogs. Military Doc's must have it
As a Flight Surgeon in the Army, I have traveled with this text from Korea to Bosnia. It is a must have for anyone in Primary care and especially military physicians on deployments, where Orthopedic surgeons are hard to come by. It is a clear, consice treatment based book. Which guides you through the physical examination, diagnosis and managment of common orthopedic problems. In particular it lets you know what the red flags are for further evaluation and consultation. Truly Magnificent!

The best primary care orthopedic text on the market
Straightforward, to-the-point, very relevant for the busy outpatient clinic. My other orthopedic texts are collecting dust. Worth every penny. The only criticism I have of the text is their scanty, incomplete coverage of osteoporosis. This section is too cursory and out-of-date. It barely addresses densiometry and doesn't mention newer therapies such as alendronate in the treatment of osteoporosis. The emergence of alendronate predates the publication of this volume by at least 2 years so advancing medical science is not an excuse. My suggestion for future additions is to eliminate the osteoporosis section and leave it to an internal medicine text and include more fracture management in its place--even the management of osteoporotic fractures. Any section in this book should be able to stand alone in terms of being able to render appropriate evaluation and treatment guidelines without having to consult additional texts. The chapter on osteoporosis fails in this regard.

And this is the third Must-Have book for primary providers
Just like the other two books, Habif's Dermatology and Current MDT, Essentials is always on the top of my packing list when I go to the military field exercises or during deployments. It's like having an on-call consult all the time. In Essentials, I like the beginning of each chapter with drawings of different sources of pain; it's like a graphic representation of differential diagnosis. Buy these books; you will use them again and again.

Nothing less than excellence
I am a Family Practitioner in a rural setting. I have an extensive medical library, however I only have 1 copy of each book...except this one.
I have a copy in both offices and one at home. The ONLY way to improve this book would be to make it free.
And for what it is worth, Dr. Greene is one of the most pleasurable orthopedic surgeons on Earth to speak with. He knows more about the Human anatomy than God, yet NEVER belittles the questions he gets from us rural FP's

From her work with insulin-resistant patients with Type II diabetes, Dr. Schwarzbein concludes that low-fat diets cause heart attacks, eating fat makes you lose body fat, and it's important to eat high-cholesterol foods every day. According to Schwarzbein, the high-carbohydrate, low-fat, moderate-protein diet that most dieticians and disease-prevention organizations recommend is the culprit that turns people into diabetics, makes them age faster and get degenerative diseases, and keeps them fat and unhealthy. After 3 days on the diet my body breathed a sigh of relief.
Consider this: everything you thought you knew about nutrition just might be wrong. After years of watching my weight and my cholesterol creep ever higher (despite my low fat diet!) I began reading The Schwarzbein Principle with a great deal of skepticism. Gradually the book won me over with its straightforward explanations of biochemical pathways, metabolism, insulin levels, and food cravings. Quite simply, it made a lot of sense. I've been on the diet for about a month now and I no longer crave sugar or carbohydrates. I've lost a few pounds, but more importantly, I'm losing inches and it's a pleasure to see my "insulin meter" tummy disappearing. Best of all, I have incredible energy and a delicious sense of wellbeing, which I attribute to a healthy supply of seretonin. The healing plan menu at the end of the book is especially useful. My regular physician would probably have a fit if he knew I was on this diet. I may have to fire him.

I LOVE THIS BOOK AND RECOMMEND IT TO EVERYONE
By all accounts I look like a normal healthy person. But over the last few years I started having all sorts of health issues crop up. Blood sugar problems, addictions, cravings, depression, fatigue, chronic headaches, major pms and irregular menses, not to mention bloating, weight gain and the crowning blow was recurrent yeast infections that modern meds just were not affecting. I found this book ironically via Suzanne Somers book which I was perusing in a book store. I ordered the Schwarzbein Principle right here at Amazon. And I am so glad I did. I have read and re-read this book so many times I think I might need to replace it soon! Diana Schwarzbein's book focused my attention back on what was truly important and that is overall health. I appreciated the in-depth discussions about everything from heart-disease and cholesterol to diabetes and hormone imbalances. The emphasis is on healing your metabolism and then your ideal body composition will follow. This is not a quick weight loss plan, it is to heal your body for health and longevity, which does include natural weight loss if your body truly needs to lose weight.

I feel great, I look great and I do not have extremes in emotion, fluctuations in energy or intense cravings. The need for stimulants is gone. The need to be consoled by food is gone. Plus I am developing lean body mass. For the first time in my life I have a physical yearning to exercise. To move the muscle because it feels good. That is a switch from the "I gotta exercise to get fit" mentality that I struggled with for years because I never had the energy to even get out the door let alone sustain exercise over time! Now when I wake up in the morning the first thing I think about is what fun thing will I do today to move my body.

I recommend this book to anyone and everyone no matter what their current weight, health or body issues are. It simply is the way everyone should eat all of the time... for life.

The Bible of Nutrition and Diet
Someone recommended this book to me. The book is an absolute eye-opener. I have pushed everyone around me to read this book. So much so, it should be a recommended reading in High Schools to ensure that the next generations are healthy ones with no misconceptions about diet and nutrition. A must-read. I haven't found any other book written so well and supported so adequately with research and real-life trials. A well done job.

Can't stop talking about this book
This book has seriously changed my life. A friend recommended this book to me, I actually wasn't interested in reading it, but thought I'd give it a chance. Since reading the book, I can't stop recommending it. I have lost about 12 pounds, but the weight isn't what matters to me anymore! I have stopped obsessing about my weight and now focus on my HEALTH. The book is written in a way that complicated medical terminology is broken down into easy-to-understand english. It focuses on everything being connected in a way I never even thought about before - for example - I am sleeping better than ever in my life (for those of you who have trouble sleeping, I never even concidered sleep to be an issue when reading this book, it just so happens to be an added bonus! - I have always had trouble sleeping - not anymore!!!)

It works! It really, really works!
I have been joking with my friends for the last three years that I should write a "diet" book based on my great experiences with a diet I was forced to adopt due to numerous food allergies. Little did I know that that book already exists! I had been diagnosed with 33 allergies and once I removed those foods from my diet, my body changed dramatically! Not only did I lose 20 pounds, I cleared up my acne and gained so much energy that I became somewhat of an athlete. To top it all off I am constantly being asked for my ID when I go out and at the age of 32 am being mistaken for a woman in her early twenties by twenty-somethings themselves! I had attributed all of this to removing the allergenic foods and, though that is most certainly a part of it, after having read this book I can now see WHY I've found such success. I have had to remove all processed foods, stimulants and sugars due to my allergies and what's left is exactly what Dr. Schwarzbein recommends! I have unwittingly been following this whole foods diet (protein and fat included) for the last three years. So, buy this book, give the diet a month with NO CHEATING and you will be amazed! You will no longer have cravings PERIOD (I find it takes about 2-3 days to get rid of the actual physical cravings and then you have to deal with the mental part of it) and your body will thank you. Excellent text
I found the information quite thorough. It is written in a user-friendly way, easy to understand. I bought this book because it was listed as a reference for the chiropractic practice part 2 exam. This book helped me with the locations of the trigger points. Sometimes the chiro boards like to ask questions on trigger points. However, Leonardi's book: National Board of Chiropractic Part II Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers and National Board of Chiropractic Part III Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations are excellent for board exam preparation. These three books are needed for the part II and Part III of the boards.

The ultimate in drug-free pain relief!
As a Clinical Massage Therapist at a hospital, I use these books almost daily. In fact, I just ordered my second set. . . The first is so threadbare it's barely usable. ANYTIME I have a patient with a pain that I can't immediately identify I grab my Travell's. This set is an absolute BIBLE for anyone in the health care industry. Travell and Simons have esentially written "The Instruction Manual" for elliminating myofascial pain by going to it's source!

Janet Travell, MD and David Simons, MD were absolute pioneers when it came to myofascial pain and it's treatment. What makes these books even more amazing is that they were written a full quarter of a century before doctors even acknowledged that myofascial pain actually exsisted. . . What makes them interesting is that, in this, the most current edition, they have re-evaluated about 65% of the sites that before would only be considered for cortizone or saline injection and now recommend these areas be attended to by a Massage Therapist. They even go into strong detail as to stroke, direction and stretching. There are still plenty of sites that they recommend for injection, but only in a last resort situation.

The chapters are laid out in an incredibly easy to understand manner, though that's not even the beauty of the book's design. If you know the name of the muscle in question, you simply look inside the front cover; the muscle are all listed with their coresponding page numbers next to them. Don't know the name or not sure which muscle it is in the group? No problem. You again open the front cover and there, in 5th grade simplicity, are charts for all the areas covered in the book. Flip to the area in question and look through the diagrams. When you find (in the super well drawn diagrams) the pain you are trying to treat, you are given, not only several treatment plans, but etiology and most likely direct verve aggravation associated with the pain.

My only problem with the set is that the book are not as well bound as maybe they could be for the price. You'll notice, however, that it didn't have enough of an impact on me to give it any less that a perfect score.

I STRONGLY recommend this book for ANY health care practitioner that deals with pain control and alleviation.

A Tour de Force
Janet Travell MD and David Simons MD spent a lifetime studying the patterns and treatment of muscular and soft tissue pain in patients. It is a specialty in itself, and provides an amazingly detailed review of anatomy. These books are the bible on the subject written by the "mother" and "father" of the specialty. There will hardly be a day in the professional life of a busy primary care practitioner, rheumatologist, orthopedist, neurologist, physiatrist or physical therapist when these books will not be used. The more one knows of this field, the more revelations one gets into those difficult chronic pain patients. The etiology and muscular complexity of the huge field of "tension headache" syndromes now become clear. With these books you will have the tools to diagnose and treat effectively (usually dramatically) the entire spectrum of myofascial pain from head to toe, muscle by muscle. Why do so few physicians know of this vital area of medicine?

Essential Text
The Trigger Point Manual is a two volume set detailing the current state of knowledge of trigger points and myofascial pain for both the upper body, vol. 1, and the lower extremities, vol. 2. It also contains fascinating analysis of how muscles work in different situations, offering insight into aspects of human movement. A surgical Bible
I was slightly disappointed by the fact that this book is considerably thinner than the previous edition -- we're losing something here. I found the Liver chapter a bit vague sometimes (e.g. on the precise indications for resection and/or transplantation for liver cancer), and chapters on fundamental topics such as Preoperative Care are rich in concepts but lacking in practical information. However, the Sabiston Textbook of Surgery, while somewhat less majestic, is still king -- some chapters, like Soft Tissue Sarcomas and Vascular Trauma (written by none less than Brennan and Mattox respectively) are outstanding. The chapters on Management of Acute Trauma, Surgery of Morbid Obesity, Cerebrovascular Disease and Gynecology, to name just a few, also deserve much praise. This tome is a must for all medical students and surgical interns/residents.

Another great tool for the practioner's tool box.
Research suggests that an ever increasing number of practioners are relying on tools such as this to help formulate treatment plans.

As a graduate student, what I find useful about this book is that after you study a particular disorder---from the DSM-IV-TR itself, a good psychopathology text (see Davison & Neal's Abnormal Psychology), and the DSM's Diagnostic Criteria handbook, The Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner completes the loop.

I bought this book after taking a case studies class where the instructor did an absolutely miserable job in showing us the rhyme and reason behind a good treatment plan. Not satisfied that I knew enough about this critically important piece in the counseling process, I did some research and found this book to be the most highly regarded in this genre.

As subsequent classes deal with child and adolescent psychopathology, family psychopathology, etc. etc. I will be getting the treatment plans that correspond with these issues.

the best book
If you are in the Human Service field. This book is a must. It has helped me so much. I've had this book for over 7 years and if you are learning to write service plans, you will need to get this book and the others as well. Believe me, get this book. It is worth the price and beneficial as well.

Very focused, great for instruction, keeps things moving.
Excellent for learning how to write treatment plans, as well as for generating more alternatives for interventions. Working with the client to select the most important goals and most compelling interventions helps the client to take a more active approach to the tasks, and increases hope. The intro section teaches how to write a treatment plan, very good for grad students. I don't bill insurance, so instead of DSM-IV diagnosis as the sixth element, I write evaluation benchmarks. Another reviewer feared a cookbooky approach that reduces the human element in counseling/therapy. I disagree; developing and writing a treatment plan with a client helps to clarify what he/she really wants, instructs the client on the therapeutic process, and keeps in mind the desired outcomes. It keeps things moving forward. The transparency of the process keeps the counselor/therapist from being a mysterious expert figure, and empowers the client; some counselors/therapists may not like that, though. Those of us who work in time-limited settings can't afford months of wandering through a mysterious fog. Planning and goal-setting in therapy is part of the human process, not separate from it.

A Quick Reference for Busy Clinicians
Psychotherapists often complain about the high cost of doing business with managed care companies--but the real plea behind the complaint is that we want to spend more time with clients and less time with paperwork. This book creates a framework for doing just that. The experienced, competent clinician who finds him- or herself strangely inarticulate when faced with a blank OTR will find a helpful link between theory, technique, and individual needs that will help in carifying goals, determining specific interventions, and measuring success. A good, concise & easy-to-revise summary of clinical aspects
This book is one of the best Physiology books around. Although not primarily aimed at medical students, as it skimps slightly on the explanatory aspect, it is unique in the sheer amount of information it conveys. Not only that, it is very easy and quick to revise (for the day before the exams.) The amount of clinical information conveyed is very good and its section on endocrinology is unparallelled.

Premier Physiology Textbook
This is the premier physiology textbook on the market, by far and away the best physiology textbook in the world for physicians and medical students. It is concise without being too brief and detailed without being boring. Whereas Guyton contains lots of extraneous words, every word in Ganong is designed to convey the maximum amount of information. This book is ideal for medical students; it allows the rapid assimilation of concepts with the appropriate level of depth. An added benefit is the fact that this book is revised every other year meaning it is always current. This text also has chapter review questions (Both short answer and MCQ) with answers (for the MCQ questions).

A great book on physiology
Ganong's book on physiology is the best physiology book I have encountered. It was difficult to read at the time, but all the details were important, and the knowledge helped me through many subjects later. It contains all the information you will ever need on physiology, and the index is extensive.
If you want a fast-read, easy book, this is not it.

You must master this book
If you intend to hit the 95th percentile or higher on the USMLE you must master the material in this book. Step 1 is the most important test of your life and if you try to get by with "First Aid" and the BRS book, you will be crushed by the competition. If you aren't interested in a competitive residency then it doesn't matter what you study. If you are interested in Radiology, Ortho, Plastic, Derm or Optho programs (which all demand applicants of the highest cognitive ability) then this is even more essential.

Yes it is longer than most resources so get an early start and start outlining by the start of your second year. In fact, I would suggest First Years start memorizing as soon as they can. Don't forget STEP 1 is the most important exam that you will face far more important than the SAT or MCAT. I might even go so far to say that if you are a senior of junior in Undergrad and belive you can get into medical school and believe that you have the cognitive ability to do one of the hard residencies, then buy this book now and try to read 10-20 pages every day until D DAY arrives at the end of second year because if you blow step 1 then it is over and you will be doing medicine or path or family. FYI for Biochem master that book written by the guy from at Stanford, Pharm-Katzung, Path-Big Robbins Anatomy-Moore will suffice but Gray would be better.

Read all those and you will destroy your competition.

Displeased with a few Chapters
Some of these chapters are out of date and not useful for the radiologist in general practice. I especially disprove of the Charboneau chapters. Rumack and Wilson are excellent!

Ýt must be an Ýnitial for introduceing sonography
A resident must read this book first to learn sonografy best.

The GOLD Standard again!!
The New England Journal of Medicine (April 9, 1998) and Mayo Clinic Proceedings (May,1998) gave this new edition the highest review (5 Stars). That's as good as it gets.

If the first edition was brilhant this 2nd edition is a must in the field of diagnostic ultrasound. There is an answer of vitually any subject, all with a table with a brief resume. Fotographs are very clear and cover almost every topic. The editors may be proud of its creation, a definitive book in this ever changing and growing medical speciality.

Essential clinical reference
This book is an essential clinical reference for both NP students and practicing NPs. It is organized in an easy to use format. It contains up-to-date information on diagnosing and managing common illnesses seen in both children and adults. It also contains thorough information on health promotion. I would recommend this book to all students and new clinicians.

A Deep Solution to a Wider Problem
Ms. Shamblin's food research has turned up a real answer to an age-old question. Not too amazingly, God has quite an opinion on this topic. Those who desire to live "by the Book" (and to be free of excess poundage once and for all) will find great hope and much help in her textbook. A "thinking person" cannot miss the depth and clarity of God's heart in this matter. The reality of her findings closely mirror most Biblical teachings--too simple of an approach to be taken seriously by the proud. After managing fitness centers for years, watching people struggle with weight problems, and battling with it myself, I cannot express how grateful I am to Ms. Shamblin for taking the time to search out every passage in the Bible that deals with food, eating, and God's wonderful plan for making it work in the real world. What a refreshing and sound approach to keeping weight in check in a society where being "on a diet" FOREVER is both depressing and unrealistic. Super book!

Why aren't Christian's healthier????
Must be all the pot lucks? We need to keep our inheritance and keep good care of our temples. this book will help. I also like Jordan Rubin's "Maker's Diet" and Pastor Henry Wright's "A More Excellent way", which talks also about the spiritual casues for weight gain.

Cults are as Cults do
If you could take the diet principles away from Gwen Shamblin and the Remnant church, then you might have something worth supporting. Unfortunately - she has become the idol of the church - and the church lives a cultish existence. Best not to get involved.

It Works!
The title of my review is true! I am a former Weigh Down coordinater and a number of years back lost all my weight on this program! I loved Gwen's teachings and they brought me so much closer to God. Now a few years later I find she has left her church and started her own(The Remnant)It clearly states on her website that if you are not obediant to God you will not be saved.There is no Grace in her message.We are saved by grace not by works lest any man should boast.I am saddened by this change because this program had the capacity to help lots of people but due to her blatant twisting of the Word of God I must and with profound sadness no longer support her book, teachings or program. The better alternative is Judy Halliday's Thin Within. If you are still interested in Weigh Down I suggest a search on the Web where you can read for yourself Gwen's beliefs and the statements on her site.See www.remnantfellowship.org and read for yourself the statement of faith. I've tried every diet and always come back to this one
I started this diet in 1997 and went to the classes in addition to reading the book. I lost 5 lbs that time,but every time I would try other diets such as pills, shakes, etc I always came back to Gwen's teachings. Most recently I have lost 15 lbs from eatting when hungry and stopping when full and reading Gwen's book about praying to God for my needs when I want to overeat or eat when not hungry. I've had a weight problem all my life and I'll be 35 this year. I've been on anti depressants off and on thru out my life and those contributed to my weight gain. I couldn't lose the weight until I was off of Paxil. Most recently I tried Slimfast once again and I was so hungry and miserable I finally decided that there is no quick fix and go back to the teachings of Weigh Down because it does work. It's really up to you. It can work quicker if you are faithful to your own hunger cues. Like Gwen had said on one of her tapes, you may not win every battle, but you have to fight it. ... Read more

Excellent chemical reference!
This book must be the most organized reference book I have ever used. Its so fulfilling to be able to find exactly what you're looking for when you need it. Includes a common name index, chemical formula index, as well as registry numbers, therapeutic categories for drugs, useful tables, and organic chemical equations. highly recommended!

one of those things a chemist shouldn't be without
While not the first reference book I would recommend for a general library, it is certainly one a library or chemist's office shouldn't be without.

This is an encyclopedia, with abstracts on zillions of chemicals. Is this the most authoritative book on the planet? No. If you want that, go read Chem Abstracts.

If you want an handy reference which will give you a pointer in the right direction for information on chemicals/drugs/biologics, then this is for you.

Got chloroform in your waste water and wondering how it might have inadvertently developed from miscellaneous stuff dumped down the drain? Wow - acetone + bleach powder catalyzed with sulfuric acid = chloroform, with citations.

Not always the most useful, but definately a good resource.

personally, I think that this index has the most innacurate information available. It never has what most people need and it's too hard to use.

Bible for chemists and chemistry students
This is the most important and useful chemistry book for chemists and advanced level organic chemistry students. It shows all the physical constants, structures, information about synthesis, toxicity and use and reference. Although there are a few sites that provides the free online Merck Index, if you are into organic chemistry, it is not a bad idea to buy this one. Required for a semester, but keeps for a lifetime
Overall, I found this text to be chocked full of helpful knowledge. I was required to purchase this book for a course I took in beginning nutrition, but I will keep it forever because of the wealth of knowledge. The concepts are suburbly explained and illustrations make understanding the information easier. Even though most people buy this for a class, I believe it is easy to read and assimilate the information. The Appendices are chocked full of useful facts about the current diet and exchange lists, including food pyramids and such.

The only information I disagree with is the section on vegetarianism. Surely they could have done a better job and included more than four pages! However, there are plenty of books dedicated solely to vegetarians/vegans that would be more important and informative.

It would also have been nice to see more updated information on fad diets such as Atkins or South Beach with respect to health issues. Or even more recent scientific studies throughout the book would contribute significantly to the reading.

Since the 2004 edition is just coming out, if you can pick up a cheap copy of this edition it is well worth the investment.

A Very Balanced Nutrition Textbook
This is a balanced nutrition textbook that combines the concepts of nutrition with exercise, disease states that are caused by nutrition deficiencies, eating a balanced meal, glycolysis cycle and other concepts. This book also has helpful tables in the inside cover of the book and all throughout the chapters of the book.

What makes this book so good is that it goes beyond a textbook. This book can also be used by any individual looking to find ways to eat healthier, lose weight and exercise. This book goes beyond the expectations of a learning textbook and that is what makes this nutrition textbook so good. Of course its primary use is as a textbook for the professor to teach basic concepts of nutrition to its students but IMHO, it can be used for more than that.

Additonally, this book makes the concepts easy to understand to the point that any person can follow the concepts easy. The infotract CD was also helpful as well.

In all for a book that is primarily focused on the concepts of nutrition, it goes beyond its primary focus. It is a great book. Sometimes I wonder if the officials at Jenny Craig Weight Loss Centers fashion their diet plans by just using this book and charge you a ton on money. With this book anyone can eat more healthy and you won't have to spned a ton of money at Jenny Craig Weight Loss centers to do it

Easily digestible
I loved reading this book as the language used is very attractive.Information introduced in a very reader friendly way and different colours are used to stop you falling asleep.This book explains even tiny things and avoids complicated pionts by referring the in depth reader to Appendices at the back of the book.I recommend this book for any body intrested to get significant information in a short time.This book is very useful and easily digestible specially if English is not your first language.

understandable for a difficult subject!
Although I found this subject much harder than I anticipated, the manner in which Whitney wrote the subject helped me understand the material. I have learned much more than I had thought I would.

An awesome book for the above average reader.
This book is very interesting. It has extensive amount of information about everything you ever wanted to know about nutrition. From tables that display the amount of vitamins and minerals your body needs to information of various food items (ie. calories, fats, protien, etc.), this book is for you. Gaining a little to much weight? This book could be a cheaper version of a dietician. However, you may not find this interesting if your english skills are not up to par. Students in post-secondary use this book, so if your english skills are not to good, you might want to try another book. Important work if one understands its place
This is an important work, helping to document the validity of herbal medicine. However, it is not an all-encompassing work and obviously isn't referenced. Nevertheless, the German Commission E's method of publishing monographs based on the information gathered from companies, researchers, and practitioners (but apparently kept confidential) serves a useful purpose. It is always helpful to consult this text to get some solid conformation for common traditional uses. Every practitioner and researcher should have this book, though it certainly cannot be used in a vacuum.

Huge Disappointment!
I had hoped this book could be my benchmark for herbal information. What I found was a book that was hard to use with little useful information. ... Otherwise, Facts and Comparisions' Review of Natural Products is a better choice.

The Most Solid and Dependable Work on the Market
I have worked with herbs for many decades and have shelves and shelves full of works on Herbs and Healing. The German Commission E Monographs is still an often used Reference that in my oppinion belongs on everyone's shelf who works with Herbs. True, it does not cover all that the herbs are capable of and due to lack of proof, many wonderful herbs are not approved, BUT, and this is most important, whatever you find in this book is scientifically proven and you can believe it. I VERY strongly recomend this book, and the CD as well. Whenever you explore a new herb, or need to know facts, check it out in the Commission E Monographs. Then you have a very good outline from where you can start to work with, and together with other herbals get to know and experiment to arrive at your own conclusion. And that is not to mention the inclusion of interaction with other drugs, side effects, mode of administration, active composition for each monograph and different chapters that cover all that is important. A MUST for every practitioner and professional. A MUST for Everyone involved in healing, period. If you can only buy one book on herbs, I would recomend this one. Herbs are gentle and effective healers as a rule. That does not mean that when handeled and prescribed wrong they can't be fatal and dangerous as well. Due to a long time of suppression, there's much information that is doubtful at best, plain wrong and harmful at worst. So even if it's not always approving old favorites, and not mentioning all properties of all herbs, it is an amazing work. Non Nonsense and you can count on everything it says to be true. Five Stars? No way, but that's the maximum available. I would give it many more if I could. But YOU be the judge. Check it out for yourself in a store if in doubt. But don't let this work pass you without giving it a chance. It is truly a treassure.

WHERE ARE THE REFERENCES?
The monographs lack any sort of scientific references. A true reference manual should list references so the reader can verify the conclusions made.

Wow! A Terrific Reference based on years of research
I love this book. I have yet to come across such a comprehensive manual that covers all of what we know about herbs to date. The German Commission E has been the leading group to study and report the beneficial effects and bad side effects, in some cases, of herbs since the 70's. With the explosion of alternative medicine in America, and with everybody and their brother claiming to be a nutritionist or herbalist (whatever that means) and understand herbs, we need a manual like this that tells the truth. This book also standardizes what the appropriate dosages of certain herbs are to help with certain ailments. I don't know about you, but I get a different dosage recommendation on every bottle and from every so called herbalist I meet. This is because the FDA does not require studies to be done on herbs and supplements in the US. Thus, we can only turn to what Germany has been doing for over 20 years to study these wonderful plants, because Germany does require that their use, dosage information and side effects be studied before they can be given to the public. Just because someone claims wonderful benefits from an herb or that it has been used for years does not mean there are no side effects. Marijuana and cocaine are natural and have been used for years too - I think the side effects have been well demonstrated. Surgeon's best friend
If you only have time to read one book, this is the one. Every topic is boiled down to only the pure gold. All the useless facts that you can't remember anyway are left out. Presented in an easy to understand, easy to remember format. This is really all you need. I plan on reading every new issue when available. By the way, I've read Schwartz, Norton, Sabiston, and ACS over the past few years. All are good, but I already work long enough hours for my free time to be spent reading such lengthy texts.

Good, But:
This is an easy to read surgery text with up to date techniques and tests; however, there are numerous errors in the text. For the most part they are simple ones, easily reasoned out (i.e. gastric pH decreased with PPIs); but, for a seventh edition this kind of sloppiness calls into question the integrity of rest of the text.

Excellent text overall and in details. Very helpful in everyday practice and in Board preparation.

Must have for boards
This is the book which any surgeon studying for the general surgery oral boards MUST read. It covers a broad range of practical information.

FYI -- When I took my boards, everyone told me to read Schwartz for the written and Cameron for the orals; I did that and passed (I think) easily. Although I think some of the new textbooks such as Dr. Greenfield's give Schwartz a run for the money, no other book challenges Cameron for studying for the oral boards.
