5-0 out of 5 stars For reliability and validity
In an era of accountability, McDowell and Newell do an excellent job of pulling together instruments to assess patients' health. Although this volume was primary designed for Occupational and Physical Therapists, it should have a broader audience. It includes over 80 instruments with a summary on how to employ each device with estimates of reliability and validity. They give more than adequate details to enable the professional to make decisions regarding the quality and appropriateness of each single measure. Users of these tools need to comprehend the extreme lengths that it took for McDowell and Newell to accomplish their task. Their work is truly impressive. On pages 47-50, the authors do a particularly good job explaining the difference between ADL and IADL.

In addition, the authors do a particularly good job in providing technical details needed by professionals to make decisions about the need and appropriateness of an instrument to serve the specific needs of a patient. Students who are learning about calibration of psychometric instruments will also find the work beneficial. They will immediately see the practical application of theoretical concepts presented in classroom decisions. I have placed this fine book on closed serve for students to use after my presentation on reliability and validity.

Every university library should adopt a copy this is fine monograph. ... Read more

There can be few American stories more inspiring than that of the tremendous 43,000-panel AIDS quilt, a national memorial as powerfully symbolic as the Vietnam War Memorial--but made from a material as fragile and ephemeral as human life. The quilt is predicated on a simple concept: putting names to those who have died of AIDS humanizes the statistics and forces those who visit the quilt to look beyond the stigmatized categories of gayness and contagious disease that cling to the popular image of AIDS. Cleve Jones stitched the first panel in his backyard in February 1987 as a memorial to his best friend, Marvin. He has been speaking in public about the quilt for many years now, and his narrative in Stitching a Revolution is smooth and engaging. Perhaps his best quality as a storyteller is his generous recognition of others, shown in his memory of Rosa Parks in her Sunday hat: "When she handed me the quilts she'd made for her neighbors," Jones recalls, "she wanted to relish only their lives, not the divisions--just memorialize her friends and what they'd meant to her. You're doing a wonderful thing, young man, she'd said. There were no tears in her eyes, just a message for me to continue. Did my fatigue show? Did she see that the death threats and potshots had taken their toll? Dismiss them, she seemed to say, and grow old. A challenge. I brighten and feel combative." --Regina Marler ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Emotional, Moving Memoir
For those of us who were fortunate enough to be in Washington on that cold morning in October, 1987 and see the entire AIDS Memorial Quilt unfurled for the first time, we should thank Cleve Jones for both his idea of the quilt as a memorial to those who died of AIDS and this wonderful book he has written. The quilt has almost become a cliche for some of us now-- we have seen it so many times in so many different variations and sizes-- that I did not believe I could be so moved and relive that intensely emotional and poignant day in October. I was wrong. I was taken by Mr. Jones' sincerity and utter lack of egotism. He is remarkably candid about his own life as he takes the reader through his own experiences as a young gay activist in San Francisco, his role in the history of the quilt and his own diagnosis with HIV.

Mr. Jones reminds me of things I had forgotten or repressed: a lot about the heroism of Harvey Milk, for example, the awfulness of Anita Bryant, the indifference of the first President Bush who was too busy to see the quilt, of President Clinton, along with Mrs. Clinton and the Gores, who was not too busy to pay tribute to those who had fallen. We get to see some of our national celebrities in a new light: the gentle Rosa Parks, the beautiful Elizabeth Taylor frightened at making a speech, and finally Jane Fonda who can only be described as totally silly in her adoration of Tom Hayden.

A friend of mine who has seen the quilt in its entirety many times and is active in the Names Project in his hometown in Maine says that he can only read this book a little at a time. Yes, it's very viseral, sometimes painful, and it will make you cry.

In the Epilogue Mr. Jones writes: "My hope is that one day AIDS will be over and we will have to look upon all its different aspects: how it drew a country together from across cultural, ethnic, and religious divisions, and how it was, like the Holocaust, a crucible of definition. I think the Quilt will have a role in this discussion and a place in our history as memory is preserved and recreated imn this symbol of our natural desire for commuity."

And you, Mr. Jones, will have a place in that history. Many Americans cannot thank you enough for that.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great history lesson
Cleve Jones has done many wonderful things for the gay community. Now he adds this wonderful, heartfelt memior. This volume is more than "just" a memoir, it's a rich and rewarding history lesson, an eye witness account.Throught the past twenty-five years Jones has been a witness to murder, a victim of hate crimes, an activist for gay rights, a rioter, a mourner, a survivor and a an ambassador of hope and good will. This is the story of the AIDS Quilt, from its beginnings to its eventual recognition as an international symbol of peace, reconciliation and unity.Cleve Jones takes a refreshingly candid, warts-and-all approach to telling his story. He depicts himself as an ordianry man responding to extraordinary circumstances in the only way he knew how.Past imperfect, but always willing to do whatever was necessary to bring his message to the people, Cleve helped to put a human face on AIDS.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Can Make A Difference - Read Cleve Jones' Odyssey
The AIDS Memorial Quilt has been the most humanizing, uplifting and unifying symbol of the battle against the AIDS virus. As an activist, viewer of the Quilt, and twice a volunteer, I read Mr. Jones book greedily. People need to know what he has to say.People need to know the impacttheir actions can have on world perceptions; that they can make adifference.People need to knowthe history of the epidemic - reflectedin the experiences of a person immersed in the culture impacted first: howthe gay community, so brutally attacked, fought back and set up theprotocols now being used by all sectors of society all over theworld.

The book is a good read, very accessible, as simple as the conceptof the Quilt and as insightful.I thank Cleve Jones for giving humanitythe Quilt and this telling of how it came to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Stitching A Revolution" Must be read!
As an AIDS activist, I would implore everyone to read this account of how one man can take an idea and turn it into a world-wide reality.

Cleve Jones writes honestly and from the heart - not about sex, not about dirt, but about the true experience of growing up as a gay man, coming out, anddealing with AIDS from the beginning up until now.

His vision in makingthe Quilt a reality, and the many stories that go with it bring tears andlaughter, while pointing out the universality of both AIDS and The AIDSMemorial Quilt.

If his book tour comes to your town - run to that bookstore. His speaking skills are extrordinary as well.

If only this couldbecome required reading for our youth - the generation that most needs tohear the message and is frighteningly under-educated about a disease whichcan end their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Transforming Journey
While the emotion of experiencing the Quilt cannot be confined to mere words, this inspiring journey to activism and openness is a fascinating read.

In 1995, while in San Francisco to say a heartbreaking goodbye tomy dearest brother, I entered the NAMES project offices and was instantlyoverwhelmed by the raw emotion--not just sadness, which is the obviousresponse, but also a healing, a unity and a strength.I have never been somoved--until I traveled to DC to witness the 1996 display.

A part of metravels with my brother's panel wherever it goes, and this book was acathartic reliving of some of my most grueling and gratifyingmoments.

'Stitching a Revolution' is a treasure, a reminder that we oftenforget the power of one voice, and the staggering, wondrous results ofbringing together disparate peoples. ... Read more

Book Description

What forces lead to changes in governance among medical schools and their associated teaching hospitals? To what extent do such changes affect how well those schools and hospitals do their work? In this book, John A. Kastor, M.D., focuses on the academic medical centers of the University of Pennsylvania and the Johns Hopkins University, two institutions that underwent dramatic change in governance during the late 1990s.

Drawing on extensive interviews with more than three hundred administrators, physicians, and other medical professionals at Penn, Hopkins, and elsewhere, Kastor identifies the factors that influenced changes in governance at these two institutions. Chief among these, he finds, are structure, personality conflicts, and current events. This book will be of interest to administrators of teaching hospitals as well as professionals in health policy and management. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I hate this book!!
I absolutely without a doubt hate this book. It is a required book for a course that I am taking. It uses way to many initials instead of writing the complete name of each organization, so unless you have one heck of a memory you arn't sure which organization that those initials stand for. It is a very hard book to sit down and read because it is way to boring, the authors go on and on about about the topics instead of presenting the topics in a clear straight forward way. The questions at the end of each chapter are mostly based on your opinion, so you are never quite sure if your answer is correct or not. I can't wait till this class is over so that I never have to read this book again!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic resource!
This book made all the difference to me when I finished my first rounds of chemotherapy back in 1998. Glenna and Lisa help make sense of the conflict we feel when our "active" role in fighting cancer is over, when we feel abandoned by our doctors and support networks.

I've recommended this book many times to others currently in treatment, and they are astounded that they could ever "miss" going for their weekly chemo. Incredibly, the feeling is very common! I like to go back to the book on occasion myself; although I've been in active treatment for 3 years now, there are still times I find myself reaching for the wisdom and clarity that Glenna and Lisa bring to what is a bizarre, scary, demoralizing time.

Highest recommendation!

5-0 out of 5 stars wife of cancer survivor
Thank you so much for this wonderful book! I have been a caregiver for my husband for the past 9 months. Once he got a "clean" bill of health I didn't know what to do with myself. I thought I was going crazy! You take charge and be the rock for so long and then all of the sudden you don't have to do all this stuff anymore. I went and saw a counselor at the cancer center and explained what I was feeling. She said I was right on schedule and I wasn't crazy. She suggested this book and I tell you what it was a life saver!!!!! Everytime I would be going through a moment I would read the book and I was right on schedule!!!! Scary!!!! I would recomend it to anyone who is dealing with life after cancer. Thank you so very much!!!!!! Peggy Coffey

5-0 out of 5 stars I am normal!!!
After being diagnosed with cancer when I was 25 and also not personally knowing any cancer survivors, especially my age, I was so glad to find this book. I thought after the treatments were over and I was in remission I would feel normal, but instead I felt worse with depression, fear and anxiety. I thought I was just being ungrateful. I found this book and realized I was normal! So many told the same story as what I had been feeling. I never knew all those feelings were normal until I found this book. I recommend this book to every cancer survivor I meet. It helped me more than anything. I even dislike reading books and had never in my life read a complete book from front to back until I got this book. I read every page in less than two weeks and have went back through it over and over! Every survivor needs this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dance of Life!
I was introduced to Dancing In Limbo at a cancer conference in 1995 after I had been diagnosed with colon cancer. The whole conference environment was "Dancing in Limbo". It made my family wake up to the emotional devastion I was facing. I realized I was limbo, and I needed to move on. At this conference, I was inspired by the authors of Dancing In Limbo, and I was able to have a life after cancer. To this day, I highly recommend this book to every new diagosed person I meet. After reading this book, I knew it was the "Dance of Life"! (5 1/2 years later I am still living the dance!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
It was a relief to find the jumble of powerful, conflicting emotions I'd been feeling put down into words by total strangers. Since my chemo finished, my friends and family were overjoyed and relieved, but all I felt was overwhelming sadness and fear with a far greater intensity than I'd experienced throughout my treatment phase, and this book was extremely helpful in my sorting out these emotions and letting me move on to my new post-diagnosis life. While the second half of the book works too hard to support their limbo/cancer connection and seemed to only repeat previous material in a different format, the first two chapters alone are worth the price of the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Telemedice and Telehealth by Darkins and CArey
Telemedicine and Telehealth is a timely and useful book. As a Physician and Consultant, Teleheath provides a soup to nuts discussion about the issues relating to telehealth.
The first chapter details basic definitions of the field. The next five chapters deals with the patient, physicans, Healthcare in general, and lastly specific telemedicine services. The authors suggest the formula for telehealth success as improved quality and access to care at a lower cost and without raising professional objestions.
I found the chapters developing the business case for Telemedicine and telehealth services most compelling. These markets are still in their infancy and are still struggling to develop their potential. The authors share with us their strategy for selling Telehealth services (page 157).
Telemedice and Telehealth, also provides a cautionary note. The authors indicate that to date they were not aware of studies demonstrating a viable telehealth model with the current legislation and reimbursement structure. Further issues such as licensure, quality assurance and backup systems remain to be clearly defined.
This book is an excellent read. Concise, articulate and timely. I would recommend this book to any one intersted in Telemedicine or Telehealth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, useful for novices and specialists
As a software developer and member of the American Telemedicine Association, I found this book to be a very valuable reference. Our company is developing software solutions to allow patients and health care providers easy, secure access to medical information. This book has helped us understand how telemedicine is developing and how it will be used, so that we can see the developing niches for our products. This book provides the larger view of this developing field and gives readers inspiration to enter the exciting field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Telemedicine and Telehealth is Now!
As a practicing physician with a keen interest in information technologies and their applications in healthcare, I always approach books like this with some bemusement. In turn, I was pleasantly surprised by my delight with this book. To succeed in the charge to bridge the digital divide and to eliminate health disparities, we physicians and managers will have to arm ourselves with timely solutions which are informed by experience and science. Coupled with the practical and the "how to" make "Telemedicine and Telehealth" a valuable resource for anyone interested in creating the future healthcare system. It connects and transcends the important elements and issues rather than just regurgitating the problems we've heard over and over again. If you believe, as I do, that the future of healthcare will be greatly enhanced by the new information technologies, this book helps to put the present and future in perspective. Darkins and Cary absolutely succeed!

5-0 out of 5 stars The future of health care thru high technology
Review of: Telemedicine and Telehealth by Adam W. Darkins and Margaret A. Cary

This important book begins the necessary critical conversation of defining the fundamental of concepts and terms, as well as those areas of current and future applications, involved in the merging of health care delivery and high technology systems. The authors wisely suggest using the term Telehealth to address the broad range of health applications which high technology, the Internet in particular, can greatly impact.

These concerns are set in the context of both a historical view of health care and society, particularly in the more technologically developed societies of the U.S. Western Europe and Japan, and these societiesÕ current and future trends toward change of lifestyle driven by their adaptation of new technologies. These are vital concerns, both within health care delivery in particular, as well as within the economic and social evolution of these societies in general.

Their book focuses on the patientÕs experience of health care service as facilitated by this new technology rather than being yet another discussion of the fascinating innovations within the technology itself, a very important distinction.

Being physicians themselves, authors Darkins and Cary have professionally grown up through the very cusp of change they are defining for us; they know the pre-high technology delivery of health care and have been witness to, and advocates for, the introduction of high technology to the health care systems in which each have worked, both in the U.S. and England.

Their book is both comprehensive in its discussion of the issues involved as well as being detailed in its coverage of those particulars necessary to see the overall picture clearly.

Because of the timeliness of this merging of high technology and healthcare delivery, one wishes this book could be made more available to a wider reading public through a greater promotional effort by the publisher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn about telemedicine and telehealth
Conceptually, the answer to many of health care's challenges lie in the use of new information technologies. Knowing this is the case and making it happen are two very different entities. This book ably bridges these two entities. The devil, as always, is in the details and the authors deftly elaborate the problems and provide solutions. I recommend this book to practitioners, administrators, managers and policy makers who are energetic and enthusiastic about the future direction of health care. Errol L. 4-0 out of 5 stars IT HAS A REFINED ANALYTICAL APPROACH
"Designing Clinical Research: An Epidermiologic Approach" did a thorough analysis of various methodologies, which medical scientists could use in everyday research. It, first of all, outlined all the essential steps (used in epidemiological research), before delving into the analysis of each step. Its information is current and versatile. But, certain important issues like research-funding and statistics received less than expected attention. Despite this flaw, I would still recommend this book to scientists. Its pros did exceed its cons by a mile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable book
I bought this book for a course I am taking as part of my fellowship. This book focuses on the concepts of study design and critical aspects of clinical research. To my surprise, what I found was that I have a greater understanding of how to intrepret literature. This is mostly because I'm able to view it from an investigator's point of view. I'm now able to thoroughly dissect a study and identify the weaknesses, etc (without even reading the discussion section). For those who plan on doing clinical research or just practicing evidenced based medicine, this book is a must.

4-0 out of 5 stars excessively convenience-oriented book
On the whole this book is an excellent work.

But there is some possibility of fostering illusions in many readers' mind that they actually have great power of research in spite of not having good understanding on basic principles such as statistics.

It is not sufficiently equipped for graduate student or researcher above the level.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A MUST HAVE
This is an amazing textbook that is a must have for all healthcare workers or anyone involved or wanting to be involved in clinical research. The test is organized and extremely well written. I use it to teach clinical research design to my students, residents, and fellows. Hats off to Hulley et al on a job well done. It was worth the 13 year wait for the 2nd edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Research design: A superb guide
This is one of the best books I have read on how to design a research project. It starts with key, but often neglected, issues such as how to choose a well-focussed research question and steps through all the elements of study design, data collection, quality assurance, and basic grant-writing.

A "must-have" that needs a second edition! ... Read more

Book Description

"An excellent introduction to using SPSS for data analysis...extremely useful for undergraduate students, and covers a good range of material often not found in competing texts. It provides a self-contained resource itself, with more than simply (detailed and clear) step-by-step descriptions of statistical procedures in SPSS. There is also a wealth of tips and advice, and for each statistical technique a brief, but consistently reliable, explanation is provided." - George Dunbar, University of Warwick

"This book is an excellent addition to the research methods literature. It presents the research process, research strategy and SPSS techniques in manageable steps offering clear advice, useful tips and discussion of relevant issues such as assumptions and effect size...this text is written in an encouraging and supportive style. I believe students will read and learn with this book." - David Cairns, Macquarie University, Australia

The SPSS Survival Manual throws a lifeline to students and researchers grappling with SPSS. Written in a friendly, jargon-free style, it demystifies statistics and data analysis by guiding you through the entire research process and helping you to choose the right statistical technique for your project. From the formulation of research questions, to the design of the study and analysis of data, to reporting the results, Julie Pallant discusses basic and advanced statistical techniques. She outlines each technique clearly, with step-by-step procedures for performing the analysis, a detailed guide to interpreting SPSS output and an example of how to present the results in a report. The user-friendliness of the manual is enhanced by spiral binding which makes it easy to use at a computer. A recommended reading section points the reader towards additional sources of advice. Illustrated with screen grabs, examples of output and tips, and supported by a website (www.openup.co.uk/spss) with sample data and guidelines on report writing, the SPSS Survival Manual can be used by students and researchers at any level alongside any major statistics textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars It Got Me an A on the Midterm
I was behind in class, I was not "getting it" and I was desperate! So I bought all the SPSS books I could find. Pallant's book is the one I used. Everything I needed to know and be able to do was clearly explained. The accompanying online database served as an example, showing me how to enter data. This book will not go on my bookshelf; it will remain on my desk through my dissertation and afterwards.

5-0 out of 5 stars well named
This book is exactly what it claims to be a "survival manual". It contains step by step instructions and clear explanations of how to use SPSS, how to interpret the results, and selecting appropriate tests. This isn't a statistics primer or a text on research design. This is a book for those who haven't had 5 stats courses & years of using SPSS. If you need help using SPSS to evaluate research data -- get this book. A lifesaver!

1-0 out of 5 stars book needs a rewrite
Fragmented in approach. Data missing, could not download as instructed from English site. Needs a severe re-write.

Not worth the paper it's printed on.

Over rated - minus 5 on scale of 1-10 (high).

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Dime and Then Some!
This book is excellent as an assigned complement to course text for statistics courses. It is invaluable not only for navigating SPSS but it is useful for visual learners as a guide to understanding and connecting theory with practice as you move through your coursework.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for SPSS users
Everything you wanted to know about SPSS but were afraid to ask (or you asked and they refused to answer, or simply you didn't know who to ask or where to find it).

This book is fantastic. Better than an Idiot's Guide, this book runs you through the statistical side of a research project. It has a no nonsense approach to the statistical tests that you will perform, and makes suggestions as to which tests are appropriate. Additionally, it runs you through various tests to check for normality of data and how to handle outliers.

SPSS should be ashamed that they have no comparable text to this one written by Pallant. I know - I have purchased many SPSS texts in hopes to actually acquire one that deals with the basics. All fail, and Pallant's text rises high above the others in delivering as it promises. It truly is "a step by step guide to data analysis using SPSS."

This text should be required for any graduate student before they take on their thesis or doctoral research. It goes far in demystifying the process. ... Read more

Sections on patient photo-techniques, type of camera and flash equipment are very well detailed, are excellent and very well illustrated. However, chapter on digital photography was poor and not consistent with the quality of the information found in the rest of the book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Home Health Standards
A MUST resource guide for all nurses who work in the Home Health industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best training manual for nurses ever written
I have always used this handbook to train new home care nurses. It's compact enough to fit into their nursing bag and tote along on admissions. Be sure to order one for each nurse and therapist or they will get into a tug of war over them

5-0 out of 5 stars Answers legal questions quickly
Home health regulations have always been lengthy and murky to the average nurse. This small but concise book gets to the bottom line clearly and quickly. Questions such as maximum hours of weekly coverage and homebound requirements are clearly discussed. An essential resource book for team teaching in a home health agency. A great car guide to the nurse making home visits. I have ordered this book 3 or 4 times over the last 10 years of home health nursing experience. Reach for this book first if you are a new home health nurse in a certified agency - you will not regret it. ... Read more

Book Description

Michael E. Gerber is a truly revolutionary business thinker. His unique E-Myth insights have helped transform hundreds of thousands of small businesses around the world.

According to Gerber, The E-Myth is the myth of the entrepreneur. Most businesses fail to fulfill their potential because business owners are not entrepreneurs (as most people think them to be) but "technicians suffering from an entrepreneurial seizure." After all, says Gerber, most Physicians are the quintessential technicians -- they build practices by doing the work of the business...by seeing patients! As a result, most Physicians don't own a true business, but a job -- the all-consuming daily routine Gerber refers to as "doing it, doing it, doing it." Sound familiar?

With The E-Myth Physician, Michael Gerber focuses on the business of being a Physician, rather than the work of it. He reveals a radical mind-set that will free Physicians from the tyranny of the unprofitable, unproductive, perpetual routine -- juggling patients, hiring, firing, doing everything that needs to get done. Drawing on thirty years of experience working with small business owners, including many Physicians, Gerber provides revolutionary, practical, and enlightening insights on how to produce the best real-world results in the practice, in a Physician's life.

The E-Myth Physician explores critical topics such as money, people, management, patients, and growth. It teaches you how to:

  • Implement the ingenious turn-key operation, a means of creating a Franchise Prototype that embodies your unique set of talents and that produces consistent, predictable results each and every time without your having to do everything yourself
  • Recognize, understand, and manage the four factors of money -- income, profit, flow, and equity
  • Nurture the power of change to transform your practice while enabling it to grow exponentially -- without your having to be there all the time

Anecdotal and always profound, The E-Myth Physician also provides insights on a broader level. It leads Physicians to become business visionaries by relinquishing tactical work and embracing strategic work -- working on their practices instead of just in them. Gerber's revolutionary ideas empower Physicians to build successful practices and successful lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing insights
Anyone who is currently in practice or is considering doing medicine should read this book. Unfortunately one is never taught at medical school the fundamentals of running a medical practice profitably. Doctors erroneously believe that because they are good at medicine or surgery or paediatrics, they will necessarily believe that they are able to run a practice well. This couldn't be further from the truth. Gerber, in an insightful work, manages to expose many of the pitfalls in running a medical practice. I can only say from personal experience that initially, one gets validation from medicine because you are working at the coalface - doing the work of a doctor. Eventually, it dawns on you that you don't in fact have a life - you have effectively bought yourself a job. Every chapter has nuggets that have resulted in a multitude of paradigm shifts in my strategic thinking towards my practice. If you are happy doing the work of a technician and working 80 hour weeks for 50 weeks of the year, don't read this book. If you are seeking something better from practicing medicine, I would suggest reading this book in conjunction with The E-Myth Revisited - Why most small businesses don't work and what to do about it. I would also suggest reading the Robert Kiyosaki books, which will give you another lucid perspective on the pitfalls of being in a profession.

5-0 out of 5 stars He did it again!
In the line of the E-myth & the E-Myth manager, Michael Gerber does it again. Being a Physician from Buenos Aires, Argentina, it's amazing how the problems are similar in every western country and the solutions are right there in the face of any thinking person. This book while written in very simple languaje is painfully deep. And I mean painfully, because I had to change in my practice everything I was taught (or not) from Medical School to now. Moving away from the technician's point of view is the most important thing that had happened to my in my work life. Don't just read it study it!!

4-0 out of 5 stars I am a doctor for doctors...
I have read many of Mr. Gerber's books and have applied his insights to my own practice (not medicine, but financial planning).

I work exclusively with physicians and his commentary is right on. Many physicians who feel his book does not provide solutions to their problems are very much still a technician within their practice, working within it and not on it.

I have showed clients of mine, who originally did not feel the book provided enough answers to their problems, how the service they receive from my firm is directly attributed to Mr. Gerber's book.

After doing so, you can see the light go off in their head, and many of my clients are running more effecient offices, making the same or more money, and most importantly are enjoying what they truly love to do, practive medicine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Looking at the big picture
My partners and I read the E-Myth Physician after reading the E-Myth Revisited. The concepts and systemization of our company have significantly changed our practices in the last year. After looking at some of the other reviews I noticed a common theme, people either love the book or hate it. Those who were not pleased with the book all have another common theme in that they did not feel it offered any "practical" solutions to their problems. That point of view absolutely supports Gerber's idea of the "technition" working in the business and not working on the business. I would not recommend this book for people looking for quick solutions to daily problems in their practice, but if you want to change your practice and the way you look at your business it is an excellent addition to the E-Myth series.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a great book
I agree with Dan who posted a review 2 posts before me. I am a physician and have read a few of Gerbers books. His Emyth revisited is a good book. However, his other books such as this one which is supposed to be geared towards specific profession. He only gives you some very basic concepts that offer really no solutions to these problems. I think most of us who understand our problems wish to have some questions answered and get help solving them not just simply reiterate what we already know. He does an absolute poor job on the money section of the book even though he implies that it is one of the most important aspects of the business. It is a terrible book on application to problem solving. Emyth even though does not necessarily cover application all the way either but it gives more useful hints than this one.

Profiteeering pharmaceutical companies and the FDA have met their match in Dr. Jerry Avorn, a Harvard Medical school researcher and clinician. In Powerful Medicines,he brilliantly combines patient vignettes, scientific critique, and statistics to create a risk/benefit balance for prescription drugs. His premise:"Every drug is a triangle with three faces--representing the healing it can bring, the hazards it can inflict and the economic impact of each." Avorn'sgiftsas a writer are apparent in the prologue, an edgy account of the mismanaged medications of several stroke patients. He then details the intellectual history of drug assessment and benefits, including the biblical food police in the Book of Daniel, the deer in the headlights Estrogen debacle and the current infatuation with Ginseng and other alternative medicines. Turning from benefits to risks, Avorn examines diet pills, Viagra, cold medicines and diabetes drugs with comparisons the decisions of Dr. Fautus--who makes life-changing bargains between safety and effectiveness.Other insightful chapters offer views of prescription drug economies, and comparative healthcare around the globe. The final chapters create an insightful template for emerging public policy. Throughout, Avorn pulls at common threads: the line between personal and public responsibility, the perils of drug promotion, and the marketplace that usurps the role of scientific evidence in selecting treatments.Anyone looking for a quick muckraking read will be disappointed. But Avorn's views, literate and complex, will frame the debate on prescription drugs for years to come. --Barbara Mackoff ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Useful Book to Learn About PACS
My review of the book is through the perspective of someone who is somewhat knowledgeable about computer technology but quite lacking in my knowledge of PACS, radiology workflow and processes, and imaging technologies.

Quite simply, this book met all of my goals in filling in the gaps in my knowledge. I'm not going to go through the entire book, but I am going to discuss the chapters that I personally found most useful.

FINANCIAL MODELING
Information technology is full of interesting ideas that lack "financial legs". This chapter discussed finances behind a film-based radiology department and a filmless one including techniques for developing a business case for a PACS.

DICOM
This chapter provides a primer on DICOM. Having a stronger background in HL7, I found this chapter useful in unraveling the mystery and secret language used by DICOM professionals. I now understand the business rational and use of each of the DICOM transactions.

WORKFLOW
This chapter described the workflows in a film-based department and how the workflow should change after the proper implementation of a PACS. Workflow is described from the perspective of the patient, the technologist, and the radiologist. I feel comfortable in creating "straw man workflows" after reading this chapter. One of the most interesting things in this chapter was a description of a traditional time and motion study performed on radiologists before the implementation of a PACS and after implementation.

IMAGE ACQUISITION
This chapter familiarized the reader with the modalities that supply the images to the PACS. I learned about each modality, the different technologies for getting images digitized.

OTHER INTERESTING CHAPTERS
The book also had chapters on Computing Fundamentals, Networking Fundamentals, and Storage Technologies that would be excellent for someone needing a primer in those areas.

SUMMARY
Also, the book did good job of covering certain relevant technical details that would appeal to the more technically inclined but would add to my credibility to be able to understand at a superficial level: Imaging Workstation Technologies, Image Compression, Voice Recognition, Teleradiology, Legal Issues, and Utilization Management.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read and Reference
I too, as the above customer, bought this book to plan the installation of a PACS in our 150 bed hospital. The experiences of the authors and the depth of coverage was excellent for myself (RT/PACS administrator) and the chief of our department (radiologist) as we planned our PACS system. I learned everything I needed to have an intelligent conversation with the vendors we chose to deal with. Our next task will be voice recognition which the book discusses in detail. Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars A PACS Planner's dream!
We are in the process of installing a system wide PACS system at our 350 bed hospital and this book was a god-sent. Explanations are clear and concise, pertinent for all levels of users. I am a radiologist, but our administrator and PACS (to be) administrator also gained much valuable information from this publication. ... Read more
