Book Description

A Mandarin speaking woman is rushed to the hospital emergency room with a high fever and chest pains--yet refuses to let the doctor examine her. What does the hospital staff do? As patient populations grow more and more diverse, this and thousands of similar situations confront health care providers each day as they attempt to provide care to our country's newest residents.

Honoring Patient Preferences is an indispensable manual written for health care professionals who care for patients from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds. Sponsored by Children's Hospital in Boston--the hospital voted number one in pediatrics nine years in a row by U.S. News and World Report--this essential guide contains detailed, practical information for working with dozens of religious and cultural groups. This unique resource is designed to help providers best meet the needs of their ethnically diverse patients while also satisfying stringent new regulatory standards for culturally sensitive care.

While drawing on many case studies from the Children's Hospital patient population, the authors help clinicians and other professionals expand their knowledge of the customs and rules for care of the sick, attitudes and beliefs about illness and death, and religious observances in the hospital setting. They provide insight into the basic beliefs, traditions, and practices that influence how people from a wide variety of cultures and religions respond to the U.S. health care environment. Honoring Patient Preferences provides health care professionals indispensable suggestions for meeting Joint Commission on Accreditation standards and includes a CD-ROM containing the entire text of the book. Key-word searchable, this resource can be posted on any computer network, giving easy access to this essential information to those who need it most.

3-0 out of 5 stars Why so expensive?
The information was written with one medical center in one geographic area as the focus. Thus they focused on the ethnic groups which are served by that medical center rather than the United States at large. Many common US ethnic groups are missing, e.g. Philippines, Korea, Italy, to name three large immigrant populations in our area. The CD makes it easier to make copies while at a computer than to run to a copy machine, but otherwise it's purpose is unclear. Features available in Adobe Acrobat (the CD is a PDF of the manuscript) that could enhance the use of the document are ignored. It is quite simply a pdf copy of the book, without any links or other features easy to use in Acrobat. Since the book references many websites, it would have been easy to make these into links, giving a purpose of the CD. This was a good start on the issues healthcare faces in a diverse environment like the US, but disappointing in it's incomplete content and incomplete use of PDF document format capabilities - perhaps the publishers forced it into print too soon... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Limited Readership, Unlimited Ideas.
This is an ace book that will unfortunately only appeal to those wanting to bring all areas of professional health care into a commercial but patient focused new paradigm.

My firm has created a business operating system (all the non clinical stuff) for dentists in Australia - we do everything from the tools to assist them to credibly advise of pharmacy level home care products, to FactSheets on complex services for better and higher levels of compliance to treatment plans, and to achieve all those economies of scale that small businesses can never secure.

It is a well structured book and presents a (psudeo Porter)value based way of looking at health care in a readable and logical way.

If you want to make a branch of healthcare work and you have the energy to think your way through the issues (and to overcome the existing Luddites), this book will assist you greatly. ... Read more

Book Description

When Michael Collins decides to become a surgeon, he is totally unprepared for the chaotic life of a resident at a major hospital.A natural overachiever, Collins' success, in college and medical school led to a surgical residency at one of the most respected medical centers in the world, the famed Mayo Clinic. But compared to his fellow residents Collins feels inadequate and unprepared. All too soon, the euphoria of beginning his career as an orthopedic resident gives way to the feeling he is a counterfeit, an imposter who has infiltrated a society of brilliant surgeons.

This story of Collins' four-year surgical residency traces his rise from an eager but clueless first-year resident to accomplished Chief Resident in his final year. With unparalleled humor, he recounts the disparity between people's perceptions of a doctor's glamorous life and the real thing: a succession of run down cars that are towed to the junk yard, long weekends moonlighting at rural hospitals, a family that grows larger every year, and a laughable income.

Collins' good nature helps him over some of the rough spots but cannot spare him the harsh reality of a doctor's life. Every day he is confronted with decisions that will change people's lives-or end them-forever.A young boy's leg is mangled by a tractor: risk the boy's life to save his leg, or amputate immediately?A woman diagnosed with bone cancer injures her hip: go through a painful hip operation even though she has only months to live?Like a jolt to the system, he is faced with the reality of suffering and death as he struggles to reconcile his idealism and aspiration to heal with the recognition of his own limitations and imperfections.

Unflinching and deeply engaging, Hot Lights, Cold Steel is a humane and passionate reminder that doctors are people too. This is a gripping memoir, at times devastating, others triumphant, but always compulsively readable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I was fortunate enough to be a student of Linda Swaynes @ UNC Charlotte. We were the first class to use this book. Not only was Ms. Swayne excellent at what she taught but the book was a tool that explained the theories in nice detail. I continue to use the book as a resource. I am currently a hospital CEO.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great balance of theory and practice
I used this text for a class in health care management. I was impressed by the readability of the text, the incredible amount of information it contained, and the great balance of theory with practical approaches. Many books about management are a bit short in the area of practical tools. This one gives you tools to work with. I used the outline of this book to do a strategic analysis of an organization with which I work. The only significant weakness of the book is the uneven quality of the case studies. These were contributed by outside authors. Some of these are terrific, others are not well written and not so helpful. Hope this gets corrected in the new edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for the Novice Planner
This comprehensive and yet easily understood text provides the fundamentals of strategic management as it applies to most any health care organization. The authors' experience comes to life in a variety of real examples and cases throughout the text. My background and interest in strategic planning led me to thoroughly examine the step-by-step processes, and I was amazed at both the simplicity and applicability of each. Definetly a text that I will recommend to anyone entering the healthcare industry or strategic planning arenas. Not only was I benefited by the purchase of this text, but had the opportunity to meet these outstanding authors in person during graduate study/research.

5-0 out of 5 stars exactly what I did expect
I have the book for two days and I like to read in it as I loved to read Tom Clancy's first stories, diificult to put down, indeed the first management book that I prefered to my used lectures in the evening . the content is what I needed in the field of stratégic management. it explains the fundamentals and give examples out of real live. there are some practical details which I see as very usefull for direct applications. I do not regret this this acquisition, the autors seem to have great experience, I found a lot of practical sens and no useless theoretical stuff. better, you can find your way in minutes through such a "big" book ad I found a lot of US.management ideas of interest in Europe. I do recommend this and I am looking for more by the same autor. ... Read more

I have used this resource with clients who have few resources and little experience in social marketing. Book Description

FISCAL ADMINISTRATION is based on two principles: that students must clearly understand the details of where the money for public budgets comes from; and that, to learn public finance and budgeting, students must "run the numbers." John Mikesell--an authority on the revenue side of public finance--focuses on his area of specialty, giving students detailed instruction that will equip them to deal with the complex issues and calculations they will encounter in the field. In most chapters, Mikesell includes questions and exercises that require calculations to get specific answers, as well as "Cases for Discussion" and "Sidebars" that supplement the regular text with more in-depth treatment of key topics. This edition also includes the most recent federal budget information, as well as the latest federal government fiscal data. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Regarding Fiscal Administration
I am currently using this book for a graduate-level public budgeting course for a ranked MPA program. Mikesell's textbook is a poorly written, discursive and convoluted in scope. There are several basic grammatical errors in this textbook, and this is coming from someone whose first language is not English. The end-of-chapter computational problems are difficult to complete because nowhere in the chapters does the author explain how to do the problems.

There is also too much information crammed into each paragraph; I'm lucky if I can read three pages in a row in one sitting. The author does not write well; he uses too many block quotes and lists (e.g, (1), (2), (3)...). Therefore, this book does not read well, and the information he tries to provide does not register in the mind.

Most of my classmates have the same complaints as the ones I listed above. This book agitating for many to read, even for someone with a fairly solid economic background. Therefore, I'd strongly recommend not to use this book if at all possible.

But to balance out this criticism with some good points, the first chapter is relatively easy to read and useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incorrect statement from former reviewer
A previous reviewer incorrectly identified my father's (J. Mikesell) undergrad alma mater as Illinois. In fact John Mikesell earned his BA from Wabash College.

Just setting the facts straight.

2-0 out of 5 stars Leaves something to be desired...
I use this book in a public budgeting graduate class. For people with limited knowledge of public budgeting or fiscal administration in general, this book leaves much to be desired. A certain base knowledge is required and one must be able to decode the private language of budget scholars to understand the writings. Examples are frequently presented with no clear connection to the text. This book is regarded as one of the best, but I would not recommend it for anyone without prior knowledge of the subject or to someone looking for a quick and easy explanation of budgeting.

Book Description

Statistical ideas have been integral to the development of epidemiology and continue to provide the tools needed to interpret epidemiological studies. Although epidemiologists do not need a highly mathematical background in statistical theory to conduct and interpret such studies, they do need more than an encyclopedia of "recipes."Statistics for Epidemiology achieves just the right balance between the two approaches, building an intuitive understanding of the methods most important to practitioners and the skills to use them effectively. It develops the techniques for analyzing simple risk factors and disease data, with step-by-step extensions that include the use of binary regression. It covers the logistic regression model in detail and contrasts it with the Cox model for time-to-incidence data. The author uses a few simple case studies to guide readers from elementary analyses to more complex regression modeling. Following these examples through several chapters makes it easy to compare the interpretations that emerge from varying approaches.Written by one of the top biostatisticians in the field, Statistics for Epidemiology stands apart in its focus on interpretation and in the depth of understanding it provides. It lays the groundwork that all public health professionals, epidemiologists, and biostatisticians need to successfully design, conduct, and analyze epidemiological studies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
I had a chance to read this book cover to cover. All I can say is "absolutely outstanding", short of calling it a historical masterpiece in the field. Very rarely do I encounter an epidemiology or biostatistic textbook that reads so well. It is optimally reader friendly; the author appears to have such a talent in explaining some most sophisticated epidemiological and statistical concepts in such a simplified language. Yet he does not sacrifice the inclusion of some very advanced epidemiological and statistical concepts. New concepts such as causal graphs and instrumental variables are also included and explained beautifully. I strongly recommend this book to all early to intermediate graduate students majoring in Epidemiology. Established epidemiologists may wish to read this book to refresh and update their knowledge. I hope the author writes more textbooks with the same style. ... Read more
