Book Description

In the first edition of the acclaimed Governing Health,Carol S. Weissert and William G. Weissert examined health care policy making from a long-term political perspective, describing how Congress, the president, special interest groups, bureaucracy, and state governments helped define health policy problems and find politically feasible solutions. Now, in this second edition, the authors have expanded their coverage and analysis to demonstrate their themes in four key time periods: 1965, when Medicaid and Medicare were passed; 1981, when OBRA came into being; 1994, when health care reform was at the forefront of President Clinton's agenda; and 2000, when health care reform formed a part of the presidential campaign platforms. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Best book in print on the health policy process
I have used this book for a number of years now in a class I teach on the Politics of Health Policy (along with Kingdon's classic). It provides an excellent overview of how health policy is made and the politics around it, drawing on both the academic literature as well as recent policies. The first edition focussed more on "medical" care than broader health issues. I look forward to the second edition!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Look at Health Policy from a Political Science Perspective
This book takes a comprehensive look at health policy in the U.S. from a political science perspective. It addresses all the institutional influences of health policy, such as Congress, the President, interest groups, regulatory agencies, and federalism. It also addresss prominent political science theories and relates them to health policy.

This book is a must-read for any health professional or student who would like to explore the how health policy is REALLY developed. I also highly recommend this book to social scientists and students who are interested in applying governmental relationships to health policy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is for your Entire Family; it is a survival guide.
When our family first learned that our Mother had Alzheimer disease, we were devastated. After we all read "The 36-Hour Day", there was a great deal of relief. Although Alzhemier and other dementing illnesses can seem catastrophic, this book reads like a freindly family doctor givng you straight forward, no-nonsense advice. It covers all aspects of dealing with the family member, from explaining just what dementia is and how it can appear, to how you can deal with it appropriately without losing your patience or embarrasing your family member. Medical help, daily care, medical problems, behavior, mood, legal issues, common compassion and basic 'rules of thumb' are thoroughly covered. Several "examples" of previous family incidents are mentioned with thoughts on how to address each and every one. Great care has been crafted into this book and I highly recommend it. You will feel better, thus making the family member you are helping feel better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Provides direction and help for caretakers and loved ones
A truly remarkable book. It is well written, and very easy to read and follow, providing a background in this disease and what can/will happen to those afflicted. Providing extremely helpful insights and strategies for those of us who are caregivers, spouses, sons, daughters, and other family and friends. Personally, this book helped me to understand what was happening to my mother, helped me to be more understanding and less frustrated and annoyed with her. This book provides a great deal of insight and allows the reader to get a "feel" for the current situation and possible future situations. I have recommended this book to my personal physician to pass along to her other patients who may be in the same position as I am.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Answers I Have Been Searching For
It doesn't give medical advice, it doesn't give technical advice, although it provides resources for seeking such advice. What it does give are explanations and insights into the thinking of brain impaired persons, explanations for their behaviors, and advice on how to manage and cope with being their caregiver.

These are exactly the answers I have been searching for. So many of my father's actions, reactions and behaviors are profiled in this book, and it's becoming clear that his decline had started many years ago with smaller incidents that we as his family had dismissed. The path of progression can be tracked, and even predicted. It will be helpful to know what's coming next and be prepared. But most important to me is the understanding of why. Being able to understand the why of his behavior helps me a great deal in being able to let go of the anger and to cope better with the situation that has recently escalated to horrific.

In trying to manage the situation I have started taking anti-anxiety meds, as well as antidepressants and high blood pressure med. I have done all that I can to make changes within myself, yet things have gotten progressively worse. I am beginning to understand that these changes have been part of the problem in a sense in that I have become "unpredictable" to him in not reacting the way he expects me to.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Fairly Clinical Approach to Alzheimer's Caregiving
More than 3 million Americans are currently over 80 years old, and their numbers are expected to double by 2025. As the number of very old expands, the incidence of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia will increase proportionately. Already at least 1 in 4 Americans cares for an elderly relative; in just a few years, a greater proportion will assume the mantle of caregiver to a dementia patient.

I do not find this thought comfortable, nor did I find The 36-Hour Day comfortable reading. As the caregiver of an elderly person with Alzheimer's, I found this volume helpful with specific problems that often accompany Alzheimer's disease but much in need of updating in other areas, such as caring for the caregiver. Going to a counselor or buying a new dress may have been reasonable options in 1999. For many caregivers in 2004, they are too expensive to be considered.

Recommended primarily as an overview of what to expect with specific dementia-related problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Caregiving
Highly recommended, an excellent resource, a must-have when beginning the caregiving journey with a loved one with dementia. This book has been out for many years, is updated often, and continues to be one of the very best. It was one of the books that helped me when I had to care for my parents, both with dementia, and inspired me to write my own book, Elder Rage. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars just get to the point!
I found this book extremely annoying to read. I thought it
would be a good idea to get an easy statistics book that does
not presume too much prior knowledge I quickly found the so
called "humor" to seriously interfere with readability. The
constant attempt to be funny simply becomes the book's major
goal in almost every sentence you read! and I just found this irritating to a degree that the book is rendered useless.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun stats book, can you believe it?
These guys are great! An easy-to-read, enjoyable stats book. Never seen one like it. Although it's titled 'biostatistics', it's for anyone who wants to actually understand what statistics is.

2-0 out of 5 stars tempered enthusiasm
I am not as enamored with this book as the other reviewers. Even though the authors tried to simplify statistics, I still found the concepts confusing. The much-praised "humor" I felt was corny and occasionally annoying. I read this book along with a standard statistics textbook, and I didn't feel that it helped to clarify things too much. Perhaps there are no shortcuts to learning statistics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Howls
Norman explains what could be a very boring set of principles in a very effective way...he uses examples that will make you laugh your bag off. He's a good prof too, takes time to explain the concepts {if you ever have the chance to be in his class}.

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect introduction to health care economics.
I wrote a paper on managed care competition for an economics course. This book proved invaluable. Without any previous knowledge of health economics, I was able to read, learn, and understand a fairly complex subject in a short amount of time using this book. The text covers everything but remains at an undergrad level. The arguments and examples are simple, clear, interesting, and easy to remember. I definitely found this to be the best introduction and overview to health economics, after having read six or seven books on the subject. ... Read more

Sponsored by the Picker/Commonwealth Program for Patient-Centered Care

In this comprehensive, research-based look at the experiences and needs of patients, the authors explore models of care that can make hospitalization more humane. Through the Patient's Eyes provides insights into why some hospitals are more patient-centered than others; how physicians can become more involved in patient-centered quality efforts; and how patient-centered quality can be integrated into health care policy, standards, and regulations. The authors show how, by bringing the patient's perspective to the design and delivery of health services, providers can improve their ability to meet patient's needs and enhance the quality of care.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best and greatest Epidemiology book ever
This edition is the best Epi book ever. Even though it is quite complicated and sometimes difficult to fully understand, it does provide a state-of-the-art knowledge and vision into Epidemiologic Methods. The book is the great reference to Epidemiologists or ones who would like to know Epi methods for their research and other purposes. Thanks to Dr. Rothman and Dr. Greenland's clear minds and great contributions from many other authors, the book is much updated and more comprehensive than the first edition. You definitely should have one on the shelf.

2-0 out of 5 stars unnecessary details on statistics subject
I agree with many reviewers here that the book is great, but poorly organized and put too much on statistical methods. I have read through it from cover to cover for my exams. Nevertheless, the first part discussion is very good, but you need to read other books before reading Rothman's book. Acutally, I really hate Greenland's writing, it is too obscure. I would not recommend this book to students.

4-0 out of 5 stars The basic premise of the Rothman tome:
"Here's what everyone else thinks about this topic (you name it), but here's why they're wrong and it's really a whole lot more complicated than that." This book verges on the surreal - there's the feeling that a little peyote might help one "break through" and suddenly absorb the 5th dimensional world of complete mastery of all the quasireligious mysteries of epi.
Yeah, I was exposed to it in my very first epi class and as others have said, it's not for beginning students; however, my professors (30 years into their fields) tell me they still turn to it on occasion. Kidding aside, there were some profound truths that (I think) I got. But ask a VERY simple question, like, does external validity refer to the source population or populations outside the source pop, and you will find yourself trudging through tar for hours with gaiters on.
Look at it this way: a priest gets to spend the rest of his life trying to refine his understanding of the Bible... well, guess what you'll be doing, pal. Might as well not get frustrated about it...

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is USELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't invest in this book, even if it is considered required reading for your course(s), you will be much better off... trust me. THis book is supposedly cutting edge in terms of epidemiological methods (whatever that means). But, the authors have written this book in a way that is confusing, misleading, and uninterpretable. The chapters written by Rothman and/or Greenland seem to purposely confuse the reader with unnecessary teminology and excessive use of equations. Moreover, this book could not be more poorly organized. Don't waste your time or money. I relied on "Epidemiology in Medicine" by Hennekens (which is not great, but good enough) and web-based resources to get through my doctoral program in Epidemiology. My classmates hated Rothman too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy "Epidumbiology Without Numbers for Dummies" Instead!
This is the wurst ridden epidumbiology book I ever red.

Us epidumbiologists don't need to know all this hard stuff. We need more ez 2 read books with short wurds and no equations and no Greak letters. Buks that tell us in simpleton terms we ken under stand some wrong weighs to do our studies and sum wrong wheys to annulize our data and sam wrong waze to interprut our resultz.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great history of American medicine
For anyone interested in the healthcare as a profession or area of study, I can't recommend this book highly enough. Despite the 20 years since its publication, Paul Starr's Pulitzer prize winner is still relevant today and in retrospect his projections made of the future of healthcare in America are surpisingly prescient.

The first book describes the development of the medical profession in early America providing a fascinating look at the social evolution of American society. The second book delineates the rise of doctors, hospitals and medical schools in latter half of the 19th to the early 20th century with the rise of science and a professional authority. The third book shifts the focus from the doctors and to the industry that medicine became as well as the various attempts at healthcare reform in response to rising healthcare costs.

My only criticism is that Starr should have devoted more pages to the root causes behind the rising healthcare costs that drove the reforms of the 1960-70s described in the third book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blame it on the AMA
This book traces the evolution of America's disjointed healthcare system, from the horror of the early hospitals to the formation of the medical profession. It also explains how, as the early profession was fighting for the right to exist, it took virtual possession of the rest of the healthcare system. Every Democratic president since FDR has attempted some type of major healthcare reform, only to be opposed by the American Medical Association (AMA) because organized doctorhood thought it had too much to lose.

This book is an effortless read for students of sociology or those that have a great interest in the history of medicine. Published in 1983, it easily predicts some of the current problems in American healthcare, because the powerful interests that determine the delivery of healthcare are still the same. It also predicts some of the circumstances that will finally bring America around to some sort of rational, universal, healthcare coverage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why the US has a private health care system
This Pulitzer Prize winning history of American Medicine does a lot to explain why the domain of public health is so small in the U.S., and why health in the U.S. is mostly a private, as opposed to public, matter. It takes some fortitude to get through, but it should be required reading for anyone who has ever wondered why, for better and for worse, the US is the only developed country that does not have social provision of medical care. Hint: It's not an accident. Recommended

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehesive History
It was a pleasure to read Starr's enlightening, comprehensive journey of medicine in it's infancy to it's state in 1985. I hope to see an updated version filling in the intervening 17 years. An excellent book. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars He's the "Jack Welch" of the Hospital Industry
I've been in hospital middle-management for more than 20 years. Very early in this book, Sherman states that the reason why hospitals fail is because of bad management. Not the government, not the insurance companies, not the high cost of technology. He offers a terrific approach and identifies the need to totally change how hospitals are run, based on seven Key Result Areas. His principles are quite similar to those of Jack Welch - the importance of great people, integrity, and "the customer is king". This should be required reading for every CEO and department head in every American hospital.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's Not Too Late to Create a New American Hospital
V. Clayton Sherman has written a wonderful dissertation about how the hospital system in this country is run. He also gives a wonderful blueprint of how to correct one of the most mismanaged businesses in the country. The hospital system today is struggling under HEAVY regulatory and monetary restrictions. But if these regulations had been in place from the beginning, like the banking industry, the participants wouldn't be running around like "chickens with their heads cut off" to fulfill "minimum standards" of Joint Commission and other like entites. What the industry desperately needs is a complete overhaul. Mr. Sherman gives the plan to follow in redoing the management of this industry, by throwing out the antiquated notions of management, and starting from the ground up to rebuild on a customer satisfaction driven premise. He sites Wal-Mart and how Sam Walton's idea of keeping the customer number one would work well in the hospital too....but this would require some different rules and some very different thinking. I strongly feel this should be REQUIRED reading for ALL hospital management! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Difficult at first, but then got it.
I too found this book to be hard to understand at first. I thought I'd never get done with it. I decided not to let a book get the best of me so I really applied myself and soon I had the hang of it. The only thing I would have added to the book is more tests at the end.

1-0 out of 5 stars poorly written and very unorganized
This text is very poorly written and proved to be an impossible study guide in my initial medical transcription course. I would not recommend it to anyone. ... Read more
