Book Description

As in its first edition, this book offers a conceptual model for understanding the nature of legal competencies. The model is interpreted to assist mental health professionals in designing and performing assessments for legal competencies defined in criminal and civil law, and to guide research that will improve the practice of evaluations for legal competencies. A special feature is the book's evaluative review of specialized forensic assessment instruments for each of several legal competencies. Three-fourths of the 37 instruments reviewed in the second edition are new and thus were not reviewed in the first edition.

Application of the assessment model and reviews of instruments are provided for six areas of legal competence:

Competence to Stand Trial;
Waiver of Rights to Silence and Legal Counsel;
Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity;
Parenting Capacity - Determination of Child Custody;
Guardianship and Conservatorship; and
Competence to Consent to Treatment. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excerpt of review from Book Reviews
"The first edition of this book was a classic, widely cited both for its analysis of forensic assessment instruments and for Grisso's integrative theory of forensic evaluation. With the second edition, Evaluating Competencies remains a classic. I expect that whenever a forensic psychologist of psychiatrist prepares for an advanced examination in this specialty, this book will-or should-be one of the first books reviewed."

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book
As a scientist with great faith---and a survivor of three separate cancers---I came to this book with a lot of faith and treatment experience. This is an amazing summary of the literature relating religion and health. There are many, many associations between religious commitment and practice and health, with major implications for crafting healthful lifestyles and treatment of illness. This book is scientifically credible, inspirational from a religious perspective, and interesting throughout. 5 stars only because that is the top star value!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth the money
This book was well worth the money. There is so much information on religion and health, from a detailed history on religion and medicine to specific subjects like well-being, depression, heart disease, stroke, immune function, and lots on cancer. I think anybody with a health background or a religion background would find this book helpful.

Book Description

The Handbook of Public Relations is another in the series of communication handbooks which has distinguished Sage Publications. Like its companion handbooks, it offers a comprehensive and detailed examination of the topic. It gives students, scholars, and practitioners a solid review of the status of the scholarly literature, stressing the role that public relations can play in building relationships between organizations, markets, audiences, and the public. The handbook is divided into five sections. The first defines the field, seeking to explain the role public relations play in society. The second section examines the state of the practice by delving into the cutting edge issues of management, ethics, gender, evaluation, public relations education, and media. The third section challenges academics and practitioners to identify the best practices that shape the daily activities of practitioners. The fourth section looks at the fascinating and daunting challenges the new communication technology pose for scholars and practitioners. The fifth section takes a global view, examining theories in international public relations as well as the trends in practice that will shape the field in the coming years.

No other book in public relations is as comprehensive in its inclusion of authors and its coverage of academic research, theory, and best practices. Global in scope, the book’s contributors comprise an academic "who’s who" of the public relations discipline. The Handbook offers one-stop shopping for the best insights into the definition of the field of public relations, the practice, and best practices. It has substantial insights into the impact of new communication technologies and the global challenges of international public relations. A must-have reference for libraries and practitioners, the book also is ideal for upper level and graduate study of public relations.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of mistakes in this book
The concept of this book is good-cut to the chase and give lots of relevent examples. However, the book has innumerable typos which can make it very dificult to follow the text. Some sections are just incomprehensible such as the section on power calculations for the chi square test. Most of the exercises at the end of the chapter are heavy on arithmetic and light on conceptual issues. Often the answers to the exercises are wrong. All these typos are really unacceptable for a fifth edition. I am at Amazon looking for another text to keep as a reference. By way of disclaimer, I am taking the author's course on introductory biostatistics and am doing average.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a good biostats textbook
I adopted this book last year for my first year grad level course in biostatistics (for MS Biology students) and my students and I were very unhappy with it. It presents ANOVA in a very unusual (and confusing) way, and it's not easy to find the needed formulas buried in the text. The authors present some tests well (ex. Tukey) and make a very good point about the misuse of the standard error of the mean. The examples and end of the chapter problems are very good for medical applications; however, several of the problems refer to non-existent tables or problems (or ones that are numbered differently) and several provide answers that are just plain wrong! We compiled a list of errors we found and emailed both the first author and the publisher and never received a reply. It was definitely not worth the aggravation! This year we are using Biostatistics: The Bare Essentials. It, too, is flawed, but the students report that finding the appropriate formulas and examples is relatively easy. It doesn't provide enough problems for each chapter to test you knowledge, and the humor is a bit bizarre, but it is a better teaching text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cuts through the goop - how to DO statistics!!!
After buying and reading a number of crummy statistics books I stumbled across this one which is a lifesaver I will keep FOREVER. Clearly written and very hands-on. THIS is the book if you need to DO statistical analysis RIGHT NOW - and know what it MEANS.

I should add that I'm an engineer, not a biologist or physician, but the techniques and information are suitably general for ANYONE who needs statistics to do their work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding text
Truly one of the best bio-statistics books available. Should be required reading for all physicians!

Book Description

This is the first atlas of cancer incidence in England and Wales, showing in 75 and tables color maps the distribution of many different types of cancer in the country, based on over 3 million malignancies during 1968-85. Cancer risks are presented in relation to degree of urbanization, and the separate geographic distributions within rural, urban, and metropolitan parts of England and Wales are discussed. Maps for certain cancers are shown by age-group. The present geographical distributions of cancers are compared with the patterns in maps from 50 years ago, several of which are reproduced. This work considers the relationships of cancer distributions to those of potentially causal factors. The known risk factors for each cancer are discussed, and the geographic distributions of many of these factors presented in maps and tables. The atlas demonstrates how the distributions of certain cancers, such as lung cancer, have changed greatly, while others, such as stomach and breast cancers, have remained little altered over the last half century. This work will be of value to epidemiologists and oncologists. ... Read more

I have used the CV and resume' forms multiple times for job applications and graduate school. It's packed full of very useful information. Lots of good sources for legal/ethical and cultural diversity for paper writing too!

Patricia Yoder-Wise blends the attributes which nurses exhibit in their practice, care and compassion, knowledge and skill, and logically demonstrates their application in leadership and management areas of nursing. 3-0 out of 5 stars Stop! Do not buy this book- "updated" version is obsolete
I give the book three stars due to content, but the numbers are all obsolete. The information is now seven years old! OBRA laws have changed, gifting laws have changed, estate tax laws,...you name it. Save your money and buy soemthing that has been updated NO EARLIER than January '03. I am a financial planner specializing in this area, so I cannot- with good conscience- recommend that people adhere to the outdated information in the book- talk to an advisor who is up-to-speed on the new rules.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful guide
I read 6 different books on this and irrevocable trusts when my dad went into a nursing home. This one was by far the easiest to understand. My parents had a revocable trust that was not worth the paper it was printed on. This book saved my family a lot of money. Unfortunately I lent it to someone who never returned it, so I am buying another copy to give to a friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory if your loved one is to enter a nursing home
Alexander Bove's book is one of the few out there that really gives you the information you need when dealing with the finances of admitting a loved one into a nursing home. After I read this book, my family and I went to an attorney who "specializes" in elder law. This turned out to be incorrect, and the advice he gave was incomplete and just plain wrong. If we hadn't had Bove's book at our disposal, we would have unknowingly accepted the other lawyer's recommendations without realizing that they would have cost a huge portion of needed funds. DON'T ASSUME THAT AN "ELDER LAW ATTORNEY" KNOWS ALL THE INTRICACIES OF MEDICAID LAW! READ THIS BOOK! (And THEN double-check the most up-to-date laws to make sure nothing has changed since this printing.)

4-0 out of 5 stars It really gave me a place to start
Easy to read and give very good cases studies. What it is missing is the extact thing to do, but I still find it useful ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Doctor Needs Only Dr. Baum's Book and a Phone Book!
When a new doctor starts practice,he only needs two books: a phone book and Doctor Neil Baum's book on practice marketing.

Forget expensive "consultants"--you pay for their education; sort of like someone taking your watch and then telling you what time it is. Doctor Baum is obviously not a full-time consultant; he is practicing MD who has been "in the trenches", in real-life practice, every day for several decades. He knows what works and what doesn't because he wrote the checks.

If his book were written when I started practice in 1977, I would be long-retired by now, sipping beer and catching lots of fish at Green Lake, WI. Because the book wasn't available then, I only get one week per year ( and not many fish). Get this book-if you are at the start, middle or even end of your practice. There is nothing like it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must For Physicians
We recommend Dr. Baum's book, "Marketing Your Clinical Practice" to all of our medical practices, particularly physicians who are starting up a new practice.

Dr. Baum's tips on non traditional sources of referrals are outstanding and his book complements our philosophy, that being effective management equals good manners plus common sense.

We would highly recommend this book to any physician in need of enhancing his/her patient volume.

John W. McDaniel President and Chief Executive Officer Physician Management Group, Inc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on practice management
I am Dr. Baum's mother and I am certainly not biased but I have to say this book is more than outstanding. I know how hard he and Ms. Henkel have worked to create this tome and you will find valuable information for your medical practice. I think every doctor should read my son's book! Sara Baum

5-0 out of 5 stars Marketing Your Clinical Practice:Ethically, Effectively, Eco
This is an outstanding contribution from Dr. Baum's fertile mind. He has a great understanding of the need for medical marketing. This book is especially timely in our era of high technology and managed care domination. It is a must read for all physicians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marketing your practice...view from a university perspective
Marketing Your Clinical Practice-Ethically, Effectively and Economically is the most useful book on medical marketing that I have read. 4-0 out of 5 stars Essential business primer for a new healthcare professional
While bookstore browsing, this book literally jumped off the shelf at me. I wondered why a book entitled "Business Mastery" was in the health section; after I flipped through, I knew the reason. It is geared towards new health care professionals, either in school or new graduates, and also is of value to experienced professionals, as myself.

This is more a handbook on how to get in touch with what you want out of a private practice, and how to make it materialize. The first section is an excellent right-brained exercise in gathering left-brained materal to transform into a business plan.

As an experienced physician with an established practice, I found some useful techniques to renew my practice focus. I have since used the book as a basic text in a business class for new health care professionals, and in consulting new professionals wanting to build a large, successful practice.

It is Boring and only provides minimal information.
It is NOT WORTH A Single Cent!

This book is excellent in giving the massage therapist a game plan in running a business. It also helped me in studying for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. It was helpful when I was reviewing for the Business practices part of the exam. However, I also highly recommend the following which is also sold on amazon.com:
The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers
(Topics: Human Anatomy, Physiology and Kinesiology) Vol 1
ISBN: 0971999643
(Topics: Clinical Pathology and Recognition of Various Conditions) Vol 2
ISBN: 0971999651
(Topics: Massage Therapy and Bodywork: Theory, Assessment and Application. Professional Standards, Ethics and Business Practices)
Vol 3
ISBN: 097199966X

The last 3 books helped me pass the test with ease. I highly recommend all 4 books.
