Published in 2000. The title "for speech, language and hearing" means the systems of respiration, nerve and audition. Very clear and instructive text. This book includes a CD-ROM, with which program one can learn the basis of the anatomy and physiology, so to speak, the structures and its functions of human organs just by clicking. 5-0 out of 5 stars Sugar Busters Explains it all to you!
The New Sugar Busters! is more than an expansion of the original book. The authors take what was, five years ago, a radical approcach to weight loss, and back it up with more thorough explanations of how and why a low glycemic diet is best for weight loss. The new book does nothing to change the basic approach to a low-sugar, correct carbohydrate lifestyle, but it does offer additional information based on the scientific evidence that now supports the basic premise of Sugar Busters!

I have been following Sugar Busters for 2 1/2 years and have lost over 50 lbs. I believe that the new edition makes a convincing argument for why Sugar Busters is not a low-carb diet and should not be lumped in with Atkins, Protein Power, and other low-carb diets. If you are looking for a nutritional plan to help bring in a healthier and leaner new year, then the New Sugar Busters may be just what you need!

4-0 out of 5 stars At last, a diet that works....
I tried Sugar Busters because I have seen others lose weight on Atkins but I knew I couldn't stick with a plan that had so many restrictions. I heard that Sugar Busters was similiar to Atkins in a lot of ways but less restrictive. I have found it to be highly successful for me. At first, living without white potatoes, white rice, white bread, corn, and other forbidden foods was difficult. The first week I was hungry and shakey and having my doubts---but I lost 4 1/2 lbs! Week 2 I was feeling much better and actually feeling full after meals--and I lost 3 1/2 lbs. I have continued to lose between 3-4 lbs per week since then. My craving for sugar has significantly decreased, and I am eating more fruits and vegetables that I ever have. I feel like I'm eating healthier. Can I stick to this plan religiously for the rest of my life? Yes and No. I think occassionly I might have some of the forbidden foods but for the most part, I see the benefits of NOT eating the forbidden foods and will never go back to eating them in the same quantities I used to. I would highly recommend getting the book, Sugar Bust For Life: A Cookbook and Companion Guide by the Brennan's in addition to this book. I refer to it on a daily basis. It opened my eyes to what I CAN eat and includes some fantastic recipes and a Brand Name Guide of allowed foods. If you are serious about not only losing weight, but eating healthier, I highly recommend Sugar Busters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not low carb
Those that are reading this as a low carb diet are missing the multiple sections of the book emphasizing 40% carbs. Just be sure the carbs are whole grain.

I have never succeeded on a diet before. This diet is simple and will be easy to maintain aftr the weight comes off. I have lost 23 lbs in two months with excercise. Just exercise never dropped the lbs before. The diet is definatly helping and I would reccomend it. It is especialy good for anyone that is hypoglycymic or has type 2 diabetes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lost 5 pounds in 3 days!
This diet rocks. I never realized how much sugar I ate, and how it was causing me to gain weight. After being on the diet for three days, I have lost five pounds! This book is excellent for any women who have PCOS as well.
Some of the chpaters were a little to scientific for me, but I was able to read the book in one sitting. I highly recommend the cook book as well as the shopper's guide. You will never feel deprived!

4-0 out of 5 stars Of Value, But Atkins is Much More Systematic
This book focuses on the problems caused by excessive consumption of refined carbohydrates, especially sugar. A graph shows the steep increase in the western consumption of refined sugar in recent decades. There are other helpful graphs and data also included. The Pima Indians are cited. Their rate of diabetes increased by some 50% when they switched from the native fiber-rich corn to the modern refined fiber-free corn.

Unlike Atkins, the authors suggest that a large-scale reduction in carbohydrate intake is not necessary to cause weight loss, so long as the carbohydrates have a low glycemic impact. In my case, this was true. I lost 56 pounds on the Atkins diet without ever formally going into Atkin's Induction Phase (less than 20 grams of ANY type of metabolizeable carbohydrate intake per day). My addiction to sugary junk foods broke relatively easily. I found that, in my case, I could usually lose 1-3 pounds per week just by eliminating all refined carb products and cutting down on metabolizeable carb products to below about 40 grams per day. But the Atkins approach may be necessary for some people. Their metabolism may not switch from glycolysis to lipolysis without cutting back on metabolizeable carb products to below 20 grams daily, or even less. In addition, some people may not be able to break their cravings for sugary products without going into Induction for at least a while. Therefore, one can conclude that this Sugar Busters book may work for some people but not others. Atkins is clearly more detailed and systematic in his approach than this book.

After the initial weight loss, the Atkins approach and the Sugar Busters approach agree. Whatever carbohydrates consumed should be of the low-glycemic, high-fiber type. Emphasis should be placed on low-glycemic vegetables, nuts, and whole-grain products. ... Read more

This is a good book for college anatomy and physiology. It is very thorough and descriptive. Goes in depth into nervous, muscular, skeletal and endocrine systems to name a few. I also recommend Key Facts of Anatomy and Physiology isbn;0971999694. This last book shows you what's important to study for. Both books highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for a fast moving program such as Health Information
As a single parent and full time student I find it difficult to keep up. My pharmacology class is packing this book into 10 weeks. The normal length of semesters is 16 weeks. Some weeks consist of 4 tests. This book has been a definite asset to my education. It is thourough, but consice educational tool. The text consists of an overall introduction of medicines and then it breaks down the medicines by body system with sub-categories of classification. The worksheets are cumbersome, but a good learning tool. I only wish I would have known I could buy this book here as it is less expensive than the college bookstore! ... Read more

Furthering the presentation of recent research in biochemistry, cell biology, and energy medicine in the Second Edition, this new update includes advances in neurophysiology and physics, reconfiguring knowledge of mind and body, from "microgenesis" to "quantum consciousness." 5-0 out of 5 stars Job's Body: A Handbook for Bodywork
This Book is Pure Poetry of the Human Anatomy, Not your average A&P Book, Reading this book is like reading a good Novel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfection!
Absolutely the best bodywork book I've ever read, bar none. I read the first edition of this book about 15 years ago, and it was a big eye-opener for me; I saw the body in a whole new light, it gave me things to think about and apply for years. I wish Deane Juhan would write a lot more books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read for anyone interested in healthcare and bodywork
Interesting perspective on how the human body is put together. Well-written and enjoyable to read, yet full of detailed descriptions.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome
Great overview of human anatomy and physiology from an integrative perspective. Brings together a lot of scientific information in an easily understood and relevant fashion that particularly explains many aspects of physiology as they apply to massage and bodywork.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Enlightening!
I had bought this for a friend about to start massage school--but I'm KEEPING IT! The writing communicates a deep love and interest in the body and how it works, and how we respond to touch as healing. This is a wonderful way to learn about the anatomy and physiology of our living, working bodies. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for the novice
This is an awesome reference for the well trained, experienced massage therapist. There are techniques demonstrated in this book that are advanced. As for the graphic presentation, there is no other book that I am aware of that shows the human body from the outside in quite as precisely as this one does. I purchased this book, before it was actually published, as a student of massage therapy and will use it in my future practice. It has become a hit with the students and staff of my school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted!
I know nothing of massage and I couldn't figure out heads or tails from the many massage books I had purchased until I received Basic Clinical Massage Therapy by Clay and Pounds.

Will I read the book in it's entirety and use every method, absolutely not, but now I can literally see the muscles and the anatomy and understand what it is that I'm working on in each and every part of the body and do some good, it's a bargain at $45!

I'd say this is the bible of massage!

5-0 out of 5 stars RN's viewpoint
The best of many, many books I have used for physical therapy approach to major medical problems. This is the most workable book with, by far, the best medical illustrations for the professional and the amateur alike. I have used Dr. Janet Travell's books, which are the benchmark for all musculo-skeletal manuals, but this is the book I use to put massage, trigger point, and any other therapies to use. It is the best anatomy book I have ever used, in school or on the job. It is a very safe book. In summary, the incredible artwork defining the location of muscles is the most helpful aspect of this book. Also, it is a super value for a manual of this quality.

I have been teaching a graduate course in cleft palate and craniofacial anomalies for 20+ years. I am thrilled with Dr. Kummer's text. Students love it! It has a strong research base, but the information has excellent clinical application and is very readable with many case studies. Although it is geared toward speech-language pathologists, its multi-disciplinary orientation would make it a useful resource for any member of a cleft palate team. The information is complex enough to be useful to an experienced team member, yet the novice reader is given sufficient background information to be able to grow with the text. 5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST!!!
This is by far the best book on respiratory care. No other book comes even close even though there is a major mistake in this new 8th edition: in the disease section, Tuberculosis is missing (editors/publisher mistake?) even though it is placed as one of the chapters in the contents sections. Huge mistake, but still the best book. There is also quite a few mistakes in referencing as the Respiratory Care journal and Clinics in Respiratory Care have been mixed up often, but that is the least of my concernes as I hardly ever follow references. This book is In full color, has great section on ventilatory support, respiratory anatomy and physiology is superb, blood gases also, sleep studies, basically everything. Could have made bronchoscopy more detailed, but I gueass the book will be too big. I personally would like to see next 9th ed. this to be expanded even more and for the Mosby respiratory care equipment book by Cairo to be encoorporated into Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. This book can be of use for all that need to learn or be familiar with respiratory care.

5-0 out of 5 stars newer edition
A new 8th edition has been published. But this is definately the Bible of Respiratory Care.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is the "Bible of Respiratory Therapy" as once said by my professor. It's a great learning tool that should be used at all colleges offering the respiratory program. I'll always keep this book around no matter what.

5-0 out of 5 stars Respiratory Therapy at its finest
The Egan's manual for respiratory therapy is the most benificial learning tool and reference manual that I have come across in all of my career. The information in this book is not only easy to understand but layed out in a manner that makes finding what you need an easy task. It gives a thorough review of all the important clinical data and physical characteristics needed to become a competent practitioner. The information in this book is explained in a very simple form which makes it easy to understand and retain the material that is covered. I would recommend this book as a refence tool to any student pursuing a career as a nurse, respiratory therapist, or physician. While this book may apply specific emphasis to the respiratory related field, it will reinforce your nursing or medicinal background by examining disease processes from a cardiopulmonary standpoint. This book has been a valuable learning tool and greatly aided me in both respiratory and nursing related classes and God willing as medical student. Best wishes to all and I hope you enjoy your read.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
This book is simply ; THE BEST RESPIRATORY PRACTICE BOOK out there. It covers all areas of respiratory practice with one exception: it does not cover individual mechanical ventilators which is good and bad. GOOD = book not as heavy; BAD = must buy a respiratory equipment book in addition to this one. BUT, THIS IS STILL THE BEST RESPIRATORY PRACTICE TEXTBOOK ANYWAY, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND IT. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Better resource for the Radiology Written boards than Orals
In the midst of my studying for the Orals, I have discovered that I use this book much less for the Orals than the I did for the writtens. Rarely some of the information is not up to date or wrong. The differentials are not weighted. For example In case conference, if you get a "double bubble" differential just start off with Ladd's Bands as your leading differential ( from the LADS mnemonic). Your Pedi examiner will shoot you down in flames. I am using Wittenberg's Primer much more than Danhert. Danhert's new edition is an improvement, but it is a limited resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Radiology Review Manual
This text is an outstanding. The author completed the book with
excellent criteria of the disease processes; differential diagnoses; and diagnostic imaging appearances. I have recommended the book to be used in the Radiology Practitioner Program, Radiologic Sciences, Weber State University, 3925 University Circle, Ogden, UT 84408-3925. I have recommended that my fellow RPA classmates obtain a copy of the text. I gave the CD version to another classmate, who has found it to be an outstanding resource for her required course work.

Please send a complimentary copy to Jane Van Valkenburg, PhD at the above address. Dr Van Valkenburg is the founder of the only RAdiology Practitioner Program in the United States. She can be contacted at 1-800-848-7770 X 6119.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!
Probably the most brilliant piece of work in 500 years of anatomy studies. You will never think of the body in the same way ever again. HIGHLY recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A RNs review from a patient/practioner's prospective
Wow! I thought I'd ordered the wrong book for my needs, which are 1.more knowledge of the process of myofascial release and 2. more understanding of places/points of anatomy. It has been a long while since I've been in school and a long time since I worked at a top teaching hospital in the Bay area in California.

I read a few paragraphs, taking care not to damage the book, because I thought I'd probably return it. HOWEVER, after a few sentences I was immediately caught up in the beauty and clarity of this work. NEVER has physiology been made so interesting. Finally, I understand so many things that were just a jumble of memorized facts in preparation for exams. This book has rekindled my love of physiology and is even undoing my dislike of anatomy. Anatomy didn't make sense to me - it was boring - it was memorization. Now I am understanding why my body is so damaged from the stresses I subject it to, but better, I understand how I can undo some damage and prevent more.

I worked on a Sports Medicine unit where famous athletes came for surgery. So much surgery can be avoided with corrective measures for chronic stressors. The medical community needs to be aware of this important material.

So bravo for such a readable work. What depth of historial findings, beautiful graphics, excellent grammar and text. I feel as though I'm in school again, but this time it is for pleasure and for pain relief.

After a few pages I tried to find out more about the author and was surprised not to see a Ph.D. by his name, although I'm not sure a Ph.D. makes one any wiser.

I totally concur with the first review.

Don't buy this book if you are looking for a simple, trendy approach to bodywork. This is so much more.

5-0 out of 5 stars The author replies
I am so grateful to Dr Kuperman for his kind words. All the copies we have have the illustration he mentions, so it must be just a singular printing snafu. I am grateful to be able to correct the spelling of oligodendrocytes for the 2nd printing which will be here shortly, but I would maintain that peizoelectricity is a property of most materials - it is how the crystal in your watch works - and that most endothelial linings are endodermally derived.

But everything else in his review is true, true, true! (though Ah do declayuh, I am blushing.) Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars A work of true genius, and lots of sweat
I am a Board Certified MD Neurologist, with osteopathic training, a Yoga Practitioner of 25 years, and have been teaching Yoga in the Ashtanga and Iyengar styles for 10 of those years. I was familiar with Tom Myers' work for some time. Needless to say I was awaiting this book's release with an anticipation that was not disappointed.

Myers is that rare bird who can convey his insights in a way that is not only accessible but also enjoyable. As is often the case, the revelations in his book (and all of his previous articles) will, I predict, have a profound effect in the Medicine of the XXI century, and have come from "outside" the mainstream of the profession.

The style is agile and yet precise (I particularly enjoy his command of Latin) The book's design is ideal both for straight-through reading and for focusing on particular interests the reader (manual therapist, yoga instructor or practitioner, etc) may have. The illustrations are awesome (to use that tired adjective, for once, in its true etymological sense) although my edition lacked the one facing page 93 (Superficial Front Line) due no doubt to a printing snafu.

The basic idea, that tensegrity ()tension integrity) patterns and structures undergird function at a macroscopic level, while not new, is presented here with clarity, scientific and anatomical rigor, and esthetic sense. It is, above all a practical book, a veritable "Instruction Manual for the Human Body" whether our own or that of the fortunate human that is a reader's cliant.

The few errata (Myers should have specified that piezoelectricity is a property of some materials, having to do with their molecular conformation and disposition; specific glial cells are called "oligodendrocytes" not "oligodendrytes"; the mesoderm, rather that the endoderm, gives origin to endothelial cells in page 36) are minor, and do not detract at all from the overall quality of this work.

I imagine that Myers is already hard at work, perhaps taking this to the next level of visceral manipulation, all the way (who knows) to the manipulation of cytoskeletal and trans-cellular elements. There again, yogis and yoginis have been manipulating microtubules and integrins for millennia...

Make no mistake, there is nothing "New-Agey" or "woo-woo" about this book, though. It is as concrete, flesh, blood and sinew as they come. I could not recommend it more heartily. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ignore the pain, it might be worth it
To be honest, these treatments can hurt A LOT but if you want to try something different and are opposed to taking pills you might as well clench your teeth and see what happens. You can make money with this if you use it professionally and pretty much run things the way you want. Be careful not to harm your customers, though because it can go out of control. I've heard it works for some people.

4-0 out of 5 stars What a good book to depend on if you are truly in need
Toss away all dependence on the greedy, evil medical profession. Deep Tissue Massage is more scientifically based than Chiropractic and it does't even require a license. If you have a Homeopathic Dr. who charges too much, this will work just as well and keep you safe and sound. Clean out that medicine cabinet. No more poisons! Thank you for your selfless advice, Art Riggs! Those who call you a quack are just uneducated. I only wish the book had advice on curing specific diseases like Cancer and Heart Disease. I feel it could rebalance the body so that would be possible at least. I am going to try some of it on my dog, who is getting old.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book,, good reference for Nat'l boards
This book is easy to understand and highly informative. I used it as a reference when I studied for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. It has all sorts of information on massage techniques, which is important of course for the exam. I was recommended the following from a mentor of mine who passed the National Certification Examination with flying colors from the help of the following:
The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
Volume 1, Volume 2 and Volume 3
These 3 study guides were so thorough and completely specific for the National Certification Examination. By using these 3 study guides I had no surprise questions on the test that I was not prepared for. I passed the exam with ease with the help of these study guides. Deep Tissue Massage: A Visual Guide to Techniques helped me with the technical portion of massage on the National Certification Examination and will serve as a reference in my future massage practice for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the one book you need.
These techniques and theories are extremely helpful to me in my massage practice. I work more efficiently and my clients noticed the more effective results immediately. If you want to integrate deep tissue work and myofascial release techniques into your practice, this is the one book you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have handbook!!!
As a student of deep-tissue massage, I found this manual to be extraordinarily helpful. The concise, well-articulated instruction on proper body mechanics, as well as the detailed anatomical drawings, and clear, illustrative photographs, make this handbook a tool I refer to constantly. I feel this book alone is more useful than many of the classes I have taken, and I am looking forward to the companion videos once they are released.
Every massage practitioner will want to own this invaluable, definitive publication. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship
This is a concise book, perfect for MSIIIs starting their IM Clerkship; it is also great for Step 2 review and the Medicine Shelf. MSIIIs can use this as an IM starting point and fill in the details concerning their own patients using Harrison's, Up to Date, or Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful but not by itself
First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship is a great book that gives you the key facts about many diseases. This is information that will help you answer questions during rounds and on exams. It's very well done, with nice illustrations. It's easy to get through, which is important since there's so much to learn during the Internal Medicine rotation (and not enough time!). I also recommend:

1) Practical Guide to the Care of the Medical Patient by Ferri because you need something to help you take care of patients. First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship isn't great for managing patients or working them up

2) Tarascon Pocket Pharmacopoeia because you need something for drug information (if you have epocrates, then you don't necessarily need this). First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship doesn't have much about drugs. Another plus is it's fairly cheap.

3) Internal Medicine Clerkship: 150 Biggest Mistakes because you need something that gives you the nuts and bolts of the rotation. This book tells you how to preround, give great oral case presentations, prepare complete write-ups, and impress during attending rounds. A lot of tips on how to get great evaluations. Not much of this is is in First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship.

4) Access to uptodate or some other medicine reference to help you work up patients.

5) Pretest book - you need to do questions before the shelf exam.

Bottom line is First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship is a great book but you need other things to help you do well during the rotation. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars First Aid for the Medicine clerkship
The best book I have used in medical so far. Questions I was pimped on during rounds, issues relevent to patient management, weird physical exam findings, strange syndromes (Felty's anyone?)were all covered in this book. I pretty much memorized the whole book, and all my attendings and residents during my medicine clerkship commented that my fund of knowledge was excellent. Everyone gave me honors, and it was literally all because of this book. Probably not adequate enough for the NBME shelf exam however, but combine it with some old kaplan step 2 questions and honoring that should be no sweat either. GET THIS BOOK!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book. Maybe only book you need for this clerkship.
Great book. It's like a potent offering of what you need to know for your Medicine clerkship. It is highly distilled, has quick easy-to-read facts/pearls, and leaves out the crud. I lost mine but I am constantly wanting to go back and review it. I may just buy it again, even though I am done with my Medicine rotation and I am pursuing Surgery as a career. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful study guide!
I have no pharmacy experience and want to obtain a part-time position as a technician to gain experience prior to applying for pharmacy school next year. In TX, certification is required, so I took the exam on Nov. 15, 03. This is the only book that I studied, and I passed w/ a scaled score of 837 (scale is from 300-900; 650 is passing score). As another reviewer stated, this is a great prep for the math questions. I felt confident in each math question I answered on the exam b/c of this book. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy read and best math prep for PTCB Certification
I'm med student (looking for summer job to help me learn my meds for next year) & had no knowledge of the profession. I studied Noah's book as part of a pharm tech class and got it in 1st week of February 2003 and easily scored a 790 (out of 300-900 scale) on March 30th 2003, without knowing ANY of the meds on the PTCB because I was able to know each and every math question through his book. His formulas are excellent and he teaches alligations which only pharmacists are familiar with but make calculations an absolute breeze. He has several practice exams which simulate the PTCB test better then the PTCB's own practice test on their website, (PTCB's practice test was harder) and some of the exact questions I swear showed up on the board test with a slight change of word or number inserted. If you do all of his practice exams their is no way you can fail. You need to know all of your class I-V schedule drugs, not inside and out, just to be able to identify them in their category. Medical terminology/abreviations for reading prescriptions is excellent don't worry about any abbreviations not in his text. Also, if you are familiar with dimensional analysis used in high school chemistry you can easily do conversions a whole lot easier. (e.g. 5ml=1teaspoon). Know your conversions! I think Noah even sits on the board to make up the questions for the PTCB so if you don't buy this book you'll be taking that exam again. I met professional pharmacy students at the test site who were their to sit for it again. You don't want to be one of them, the exam cost [$$$] each time you sit for it. The only good things about the exam is that they give you plenty of time and you can bring a calculater. Just have a study schedule, discipline and this book and don't waste money on a pharm tech course.

I found this book to be very helpful in preparing for the certification exam. But there were a tremendous amount of typographical errors and a couple of incorrect anwers. Fourth printing needs to be proofread better. Despite this, I would recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tool for Multidisciplinary Wound Management
As a Physical Therapist and head of a rural health consortium's wound management team, I found this to be an invaluable tool for assesment, planning, monitoring and reimbursement. I feel this is the best clinical resource currently available for PTs.

4-0 out of 5 stars a basic wound care reference for inexperienced clinicians
if you're looking for wound care decision pathways, protocols, documentation guidelines and how-to instructions on basic dressing change type wound care - then this is the book for you. the book's shortcomings are an almost complete lack of specificity on therapeutic interventions such as debridement techniques designed to activate certain tissue processes, and a wordy superficiality in most of the text. not a text for physicians or experienced clinicians looking for sophisticated interventions. a good comprehensive guide for beginners

5-0 out of 5 stars Best pressure ulcer reference available
This is a great reference for pressure ulcers, surgical wounds, vascular ulcers, and management of neuropathies. I found the title misleading because I expected it to cover all types of wounds including treatment of fresh lacerations and puncture wounds from accidents. If your looking for information on these last two subjects, this is not the book to use. However, if you care for people with pressure ulcer risk or wounds, diabetic risks, surgical incisions, or venous or arterial ulcers in long term care, rehab, home health, or are a wound care specialist, this reference is the definitive resource. As an RN who works in a multidisciplinary environment with PTs, I found the information on the PT role in wound management collaboration very informative. It actually has a section on managing wound healing with physical therapy technologies such as diathermy, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation to name a few. If you prefer to buy hard cover books for your reference library, don't let the "paperback" disuade you. This book is really a hardback similar in type to school textbooks. ... Read more

Book Description

This definitive reference work replaces Konigsmark and Gorlin's Genetic and Metabolic Deafness (1976). Whereas the earlier volume covered 151 genetic conditions related to hearing loss, this work covers 435. As before, the authors first discuss isolated hereditary hearing loss and then present hearing loss syndromes such as those involving the nervous system, eye, external ear and musculoskeletal system. The discussions are authoritative, practical and well-illustrated, and those of the most important syndromes are very detailed. Introductory chapters deal with the history of the field, clinical approach, embryology of the ear, tooth anomalies and hearing loss, and related endocrine and metabolic disorders. Throughout, the authors pay careful attention to nomenclature and classification. This will be an invaluable resource for all professionals concerned with genetic hearing loss, including medical geneticists, audiologists and otolaryngologists. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT REFERENCE BOOK
I have used this book throughout 2 years of medical school and it is one of the best dermatology references I have come across. It has also been a quick review for the the path seen with derm since the pictures are so clear and give a good representation of the path. An easy book to skim through before boards as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Optometrist's Guide to Dermatology
I have recently found that with this book I not only can diagnose lesions on the face, but also on almost every part of the body. As a result I now save my patients money by diagnosing them myself instead of having to refer them to a specialist. My only complaint about the book is that I feel it uses unnecessary jargon in places.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of Clinical Dermatology
I enjoyed reading this book as a layperson, not having gone to medical school. I have a number of minor skin problems and this book allowed me to differentiate the insignificant ones from the ones I need to pay attention to. I think that this book should be in every household, because a person or parent should know what skin affliction(s) they have and how serious they are before they rush off to the doctor. One thing that should have been elaborated on more is the sub-section on The Nails as Clues to Multiorgan Disease. There are only a few pages of examples of this, yet there are dozens of correlations between abnormal fingernails and systemic disease. The book only gives blantant and graphic examples of serious nail problems and then gives the possible associated underlying disease. It should be expanded to include more "soft sign" nail problems to help doctors make educated guesses about what tests to run.

5-0 out of 5 stars WELL-RESEARCHED, WELL-DOCUMENTED
Shinning like a king's armour, the colours and synopses of this atlas made a thorough analysis of skin diseases.
Any medical student or practioner who needs a dermatological companion would find a reliable one in this atlas. The uncountable pictures, which featured in this new edition are both illustrative and descriptive. Everything about the book indicates sound research and documentation, (on the part of its authors). It is a superlative tool for both doctors and students: the type of book many people would like to keep as CD-ROMs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Out Damned Spot!
Was it, perhaps, the abundant clear color photos? Was it, by chance, the in-depth and easy to understand text? Or could it have been the complete indexing of every skin disease known to mankind, from Acne to Zoster sine zoster, that compelled me to snatch this wonderful red book from the shelf and declare, "Hey, this is one super-cool book!"

If I were a dermatologist or a general practitioner, I'd want this atlas in my reference library. Ah...but alas, I'm but a simple lawyer trying to find out how to get rid of a case of... Dare I say more? Out damned spot! Out!

Here's how I see it. If I, as layperson, might think this atlas worthy of your attention...then it must be! Cammy Diaz ... Read more
