The leading resource for nearly 25 years, this new edition thoroughly and systematically covers the entire spectrum of equipment, from the most basic to the most sophisticated. It explores the most current equipment while also retaining some of the older equipment either within the text or on the accompanying website. In addition to providing technical descriptions, the 7th edition of Mosby's Respiratory Care Equipment maintains a clinical focus with discussions of how to select modes, set parameters, monitor the equipment, and respond to alarms. Various respiratory therapy techniques, such as diagnostic sleep studies, are included as well. Features like the "how-to" focus of the mechanical ventilator discussion, Clinical Practical Guideline excerpts, Clinical Rounds boxes, and Internet resources set this book apart. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars definetely equipment-oriented
Fabulous book and one of very few that goes in-depth about specific ventilators, including home-care, in-hospital adult ventilators, baby ventilators, and pretty much everything in between.

Very definitely equipment oriented and should not be the only reference for the details of mechanical ventilation.

Fabulous for the beginning RT student who is just trying to grasp the principles behind mechanical ventilation without plunging immediately into the management of the ventilator itself. Great for the familiarization of the controls of the ventilators (large diagrams of the keypad layouts came in handy and were good for practice.)

Contains good clear concise information on other aspects of respiratory care, including snippets on pulmonary function tests and medical gases.

Also a great price for a giant hardcover book such as this. But it bears repeating that this should not be your ONLY reference with regards to ventilation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Really difficult to read
I think this book would be great for Registered or Certified therapists, but as a student, myself and my classmates found this to be difficult reading. We think at the student level, the techniques to therapies and how it affects the patient is more important than the mechanical parts of the machines we use. I liked the Pilbeam mechanical Ventilation book much, much more. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
I was fortunate enough to be a student of Linda Swaynes @ UNC Charlotte. We were the first class to use this book. Not only was Ms. Swayne excellent at what she taught but the book was a tool that explained the theories in nice detail. I continue to use the book as a resource. I am currently a hospital CEO.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great balance of theory and practice
I used this text for a class in health care management. I was impressed by the readability of the text, the incredible amount of information it contained, and the great balance of theory with practical approaches. Many books about management are a bit short in the area of practical tools. This one gives you tools to work with. I used the outline of this book to do a strategic analysis of an organization with which I work. The only significant weakness of the book is the uneven quality of the case studies. These were contributed by outside authors. Some of these are terrific, others are not well written and not so helpful. Hope this gets corrected in the new edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for the Novice Planner
This comprehensive and yet easily understood text provides the fundamentals of strategic management as it applies to most any health care organization. The authors' experience comes to life in a variety of real examples and cases throughout the text. My background and interest in strategic planning led me to thoroughly examine the step-by-step processes, and I was amazed at both the simplicity and applicability of each. Definetly a text that I will recommend to anyone entering the healthcare industry or strategic planning arenas. Not only was I benefited by the purchase of this text, but had the opportunity to meet these outstanding authors in person during graduate study/research.

5-0 out of 5 stars exactly what I did expect
I have the book for two days and I like to read in it as I loved to read Tom Clancy's first stories, diificult to put down, indeed the first management book that I prefered to my used lectures in the evening . the content is what I needed in the field of stratégic management. it explains the fundamentals and give examples out of real live. there are some practical details which I see as very usefull for direct applications. I do not regret this this acquisition, the autors seem to have great experience, I found a lot of practical sens and no useless theoretical stuff. better, you can find your way in minutes through such a "big" book ad I found a lot of US.management ideas of interest in Europe. I do recommend this and I am looking for more by the same autor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Top of the Line for Basic Medical Providers
Prehospital emgergency care is the best book that I have read for EMT-B level care providers. I live in Ontario, Canada, where we do not have EMT's. We have paramedics and first responders. This book is a great first book for those getting into the emergency medicine profession. It covers the basics of the basics very well and very thoroughly. The pictures are clear and easy to understand and the language isn't too complicated to understand.
We used a version of this book for medical training in the fire service and it has proven itself to be a very practical and efficient learning tool. There are expanded areas in cetain chapters where the book goes above and beyond the level of knowledge that EMT-B level providers will need to know. It's always good to know more than you need to and this book helps tremendously with that. Those intending on pursuing their careers into more advanced paramedicine should consider making this book the foundation to their knowledge.

The CD that comes along with it is a valuable resource that assists with learning. As well as the web site that is given in the book can be used as a study guide. This is a must for all responders to medical incidents. This is the core information that all emergency providers really need to know because of the fact that it doesn't take that long to learn and that just a little knowledge can go a long way to save somebody's life. Even police officers should have a copy of this in their library and review it often.

In this book train students to do thorough patient assessment. Because patient assessment is very important, use limit resource to save unlimit life. I think this book is leadership on this area. And expanded to include even more full-color art and photos of procedures and updated equipment, as well as new flowcharts illustrating assessment and care steps for various emergency situations. The authors also bring students up to date on new protocols that summarize cardiac arrest, pediatric emergencies, as well as many other crisis conditions. But the outline alone is too basic, leaves out important topics, and contains multiple errors, whether they be typo-s, over-simplifications, bad translation of a higher reference, inappropriate verbage or incorrect qualitative statements. And the practice exam CD has just enough errors to be annoying. Material reviewed by medical professionals needs to be accurate. This study guide needs to be paired with a medical reference intended for physicians to make it useful (try Lange's Current).

5-0 out of 5 stars exam preparation
I recently used this book, and others, to review for the PANRE. This book stands out for clarity, pertinent information concisely delivered, AND for accuracy!....one other book that I used was VERY disappointing in that it contained multiple errors!..
The questions on the exam were exactly covered in this text. I recommend it highly.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This book my be "approved by the APPA and APAP", but don't being fooled by these endorsements. The books outline is too basic as are the review question and don't reflect the level of difficulty of the boards. I was also disappointed that the review questions in the book and on the CD are identical. Except, the CD mixes up some of the graphics. What should be radiology pictures for radiology questions turn out to be radiology picture and ECG questions and vice versa(use the questions in the book as a reference they are correct.
You are much better served by purchasing "Physician Assistant Review" ISBN: 0781742315. It seems to follow Currents "CDMT" to a tee, but thankfully leaves out the esoteric information that is too much for a fledging PA anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Review for the Certification and Recertifica
I highly recommend this book to Physician Assistant students studying for the PANCE. It is brief and straight to the point. The CD-ROM is an excellent complement to the book. The questions at the back are excellent also. It is lightweight and not too bulky and as a student I certainly appreciate this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good resource for diagnosis information and protocols.
As an American OTR living and practicing in Japan, I need to have a quick reference for the many diagnoses that I am presented with daily. Without the benefit of other therapists to consult with, I am continually looking to this book for a starting place. A good resource for experienced practitioners and a must-own for beginning therapists. Now if there was only an updated edition?

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding physiologic function
I am a music therapist specializing in work with Autistic and other diagnosed children. I have just completed a book titled:
Music Therapy, Sensory Integration and The Autistic Child, currently in publication at Jessica Kingsley Publishers. It is filled with physiologic information as that relates to the work of music therapy. I have used the Fisher book as a reference and found it accurate, concise, and well presented, and it is one of the physiologic references in my own bibliography. Any therapist working with sensory integration issues must investigate the physiologic implications in coordinated hearing, seeing, sensing. For that information, I found this book clear and direct in helping lay readers and professionals alike to understand physiology. My own book follows similar progressions from presenting physiologic information to demonstrating, through case examples, how sensory integration implicates the work of music therapy. I recommend this book for clinicians, educators, caregivers. My own book will be available in late 2001.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sensory Integration: Theory and Practice
This was one of the few books available at the time my son was diagonosed with SI. The book was invaluable to me at the time. Understand the book is a theory and practice text, and is not written with the layman in mind. However, I did gain more insight into SI with the book. It helped me understand a lot of the reasons behind my son's behaviors. It also helped me better understand the need for the therapy he was receiving, and why things affected him the way they did. I would recommend this book to other parents who are as perplexed as I was. It helps with a few more pieces of the puzzle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sensory Integration:Theory and Practice
Even with forty years of experience in the field, I found this book insightful. It is written to enlarge existing understanding of sensory integration without intimidating the reader. The wealth of knowledge can help not only the new graduate, but also the more experienced practitioner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Source for Therapists Working with VPI
This book gave our therapist a clear set of instructions for working with my daughter, who has VPI and a submucus cleft palate. Using these techniques, after over a year of traditional therapy, within six months of three sessions a week this therapist had my daughter saying most of her sounds. It gave my baby her voice so she could tell me with words what she had, up until then, been telling me with gestures and tone of voice.

If your child has any leakage of air into his or her nose when speaking, this book is a must read. Read it yourself and pass it to your speech therapist. My daughter is now in a position where they can evaluate what, if any, surgical intervention will help with her speech.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" for all parents of children with cleft palate!
As a mother with a child who has a cleft palate, I was absolutely thrilled with this book. I have recommended it as a "must read" to all the parents of children with cleft palates that I know and to our healthcare professionals. It answered all the questions I have had, but could never find answers to, about my child's developing speech and how to manage his care. It contains easy to follow, useable techniques for improving speech production that are simple to apply and yield unbelievably fast results. Some of the topics of interest to me include: the basic mechanics of speech production, how to encourage early speech, how to recognize all the different types of cleft palate speech errors and how and when to correct them, how to make the most of Early Intervention and school district provided services, and, most importantly, specific exercises to encourage production of new sounds. The speech pathologist we work with, while excellent, does not have extensive experience in cleft palate speech. This book enabled her to design an exercise program tailored to my child's current needs and we plan to use it as a guide for each step of his speech development. After reading it I feel confident that I can actively and intelligently participate in my child's therapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A stupendous achievement
This book is simply the definitive volume on the implementation for speech therapy in individuals with cleft palate, hypernasal speech, and genetic syndromes that result in these conditions with particular emphasis on velo-cardio-facial syndrome. This book was a collaborative effort supported by The Velo-Cardio-Facial Syndrome Educational Foundation, an organization committed to spreading state-of-the-art knowledge to both professionals and lay people. The techniques described are so cutting edge that many who would apply more traditional (and less effective) speech therapy procedures will probably feel threatened. The price of this volume is small compared the potential thousands of dollars that might otherwise be wasted on ineffective procedures. Speaking from a position of over 30 years of experience in this field, I could not be more thrilled that this volume has reached print. It is a stupendous achievement.

2-0 out of 5 stars Golding Kushner book less than helpful
I purchased this book because it was highly recommended by the Velo Cardio Facial Syndrome (VCFS) Foundation. I was told that it was "the bible" for helping develop speech in VCFS kids. There were only a few pages on VCFS and the thrust of those pages was an argument against the use of sign. On a personal level I am the mother of a VCFS child, and am acquanted with 100's of other VCFS parents, nearly all of whom use sign WITH GREAT SUCCESS with our children.

I would not recommend this book to anyone who is a layperson in speech pathology. I would not recommend it to anyone who has a child that is non verbal as a result of anything other than a cleft palate. The book only appropriate for Speech Language Pathologists or Developmental Pediatricians. I can't imagine anyone else finding it helpful. For that matter our Speech Language Pathologist didn't find it helpful either. ... Read more
