Book Description

Learner-Centered Assessment on College Campuses integrates current thinking and research regarding the learning of undergraduate students with principles of best practice in assessment and teaching. The book will help readers see the connection among three powerful trends in higher education today: the focus on learning and learners, the emphasis on the assessment of learning, and the need to continually improve what those in higher education do. Grounded in principles of constructivist learning theory and continuous improvement, the book provides opportunities for readers to make connections with what they already know about assessment, integrate new information with their current knowledge, and try new approaches to enhance the learning of their students. Readers will consider what it means to shift from a teacher-centered paradigm of instruction to a learner-centered paradigm. The book offers practical approaches to help formulate intended learning outcomes, gather feedback from students to guide instruction, and develop scoring criteria for guiding and evaluating student work. Readers will learn how to assess students' ability to think critically, address enduring and emerging issues and problems in their disciplines, and use portfolios to promote and evaluate student learning. Numerous questions to guide implementation, as well as examples from a variety of disciplines and institutions are provided. For higher education administrators or those in faculty development. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great surprise
As a faculty developer and instructional designer I am constantly on the lookout for good resources. Every once in a while, a jewel turns up. I must say that this is a pure jewel. I have had my copy for about six eeks and have read it once and am in the process of rereading it a second time.

For faculty who really want a good understanding of student-centered instruction as well as assessment, I higly recommend this book.

It is replete with examples and the section on developing and using rubrics is exceptional.

I consider this book a must have for faculty member's professional library.

3-0 out of 5 stars has its ups and downs
The book has absolutely everything you need to know word-for-word to get certified in NALS. It comes from more of a nursing perspective so little details like how to operate the jackson-reiss and anatomy of the airway will be extremely redunant for respiratory therapists.

I found the CD-ROM included was very buggy in my computer. While it was helpful to see everything happening at once, the videos' content should have been more closely watched, since during a chapter about mechanical ventilation saying bag at around a rate of 40, will clearly show the person at the head ventilating at a rate of closer to 70 or 80.

5-0 out of 5 stars best so far
I'm going to make it short. I just passed my neo resuscitation recertification because of this book. What makes this book so special is its illustrations (each illustration is worth 1000 words or so)and its flowing text.If you need this type of book, than I believe this one is the best so far on American market; there is one better in Europe and Australia, but they have slightly diferent guidelines which may be better than ours, but hey, maybe one they we get to the point where we have world guidelines. Believe me, I have researched alot to find the best book on this topic, and this book is it. I recommend it to all MDs, critical RNs, neonatal respiratory therapists(RRT-NPS)and other medical staff that is often in contact with little bambinos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Improved Version
Text flows well and I was able to ace the course. Great reference to keep in your locker at work for review, too

5-0 out of 5 stars Neonatal Resuscitation Made Easy
NRP has been streamlined to enhance the readers learning and retention of the resuscitation guidelines. This book is easy reading...cover to cover! Key learning points are emphasized throughout the book. Each chapter is carefully laid out with case studies to reinforce the content covered. The reader builds on the foundation of the previous chapter(s) thus progressing one from a basic to complex resuscitation scenario. Comprehension questions are found through various points of each chapter with a test at the end of each chapter. The book is excellent not to mention the CD-ROM as an added bonus. Even if you are due to renew your NRP under the old guidelines(through June 2001) this book will provide you with all the information you need to know. Thanks Marla!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Learning tool!
Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation provides very easy to follow information as well as hands-on excercises in the practice of Neonatal Resucitation. An excellent read for the emergency worker who would like to get more information on this very specialized field in the practice. Very easy to follow even for the non-native english speaker. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars horrible
This book is horrible. And so expensive too, for such aa bad book. Why would you want to buy this book when you can get Egan's respiratory care in color and beautifuly written too for similar price? Dont make a mistake. Unless you have money to throw away and dont care about quality then go ahead and buy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Should be the last on your list for resp. care knowledge
I am an RT student and this was one of our required texts. We were the first class to have this book inflicted on us. Numerous mistakes have been found, by the students! Some of the answers to the review questions at the end of each chapter are nowhere to be found. We are all having a book burning party at the end of the semester. (That is not a joke) Please do not subject yourself to this book! Egans rules!

2-0 out of 5 stars stay away
I really hate to say it , but this book is just not worth 1/20th of any other major respiratory care book (for example Egan's fundamentals of RC or Dean Hess et al, RC: principles and practice) I feel bad saying it since I know how much hard work it takes to get a book to be printed. The whole design, bad fonts, cheap paper, and organization of the book is really bad. You could gather 2 or 3 chapters that are decent, but we all know that for the book to be successful it must have at least 3/4 of its material acceptable to read and enjoy. I doubt this book will make it into 2nd ed. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars worth a buy if you do not mind typos
Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Techniques is an alternative to Travell's Trigger Point Manual if you do not do TP injections. It has great pictures, well explained treatment techniques (if you are up to date with your anatomy and medical terms) and lots of references. The disadvantage are typos (the editor must have had a bad day and was unable to write the German words for the references right, but also some English words are off!) Parts of the text are repeated in the book twice, what I thought is unnecessary and only adds to the number of pages but not the quality of content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the money!
I'm an Advanced Practitioner of Massage Therapy and find this book VERY helpful. The Muscle Energy Techniques (M.E.T.s) are explained very thoroughly, and the accompanying drawings, and or pictures, are very helpful. While familiar with the M.E.T.s, having this book as a reference for all the upper body muscles, and their positioning for the best M.E.T. applications, is very rewarding. I'd recommend this book highly to anyone that has a basic understanding of the therapeutic aspects of massage and M.E.T.s.
Mr. Chiatow and Ms. Delany, PLEASE!!! I can't wait for the next volume! I'm sure the Lower Body will be as good!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Techniques - Vol. I
This is a really clearly written, concise book, with drawings and pictures of muscle positions, trigger points, etc. I bought the Jane Travell Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction Books before this one came out, and for the money wish I had bought the Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Tech. Book. Unless you are a Physician, who wants to inject the patient's trigger points with a saline solution, and then you better be very exact in your aim with the needle, I think the Clinical Application of Neurom. Tech. Book is a much more practical, useful, hands on, straight forward book that addresses all the trigger points, origins and insertions of the muscles in a very user friendly way. Until this book came out, Jane Travell's was the only great reference guide; but what patient really likes injections? Now this book surpasses Dr. Travells, in that all the material in it is useful and usable. Can't wait for Vol. II, Lower Body, to come out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Serious ASL Students!
I'll admit that when I purchased this book, I was doing it more for an addition to my library than for actual use. Being a Deaf American Sign Language teacher, I'd often used several other basic ASL books and thought them sufficient, to a point. However, when I got my hands on this book, I was thrilled with the extra mile the writers and illustrators went when producing it.

This book is similar to "A Basic Course in ASL," and some may find it hard to dicern between the two. However, this book has many more practice sentences and conversation. Many more opportunities to use your new-found skills. Many more illustrations. There is use of slang and idiomatic language that isn't found often in other resources.

You can purchase a videotape to accompany this book. If you are learning on your own, that really is a must-have. Otherwise, this book offers a full course in beginning your trip to understanding true American Sign Language (versus Signed English or Contact Sign). Highly recommended by this deafie! :v)

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Vocab...too bad most of it is localized
This was a text I used in Beginning ASL II. There is a supplemental video that goes along with the book as well.

While there is tons of vocabulary used in this text, most of it is used the the Pacific Northwest area. This is not a great book if you're taking classes in the midwest or even the south. I was really glad that I had a professor that could show me local signs in my State/City/neighborhood.

There is some examples of ASL grammar included, but nothing hard and fast. As I've learned, the grammar has been easier to pick up.

The video I mentioned is very helpful since most of the exercises revolve around certain scenes that are acted out. There are some werid camera angles during a few black and white "intermissions".

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book.... Not recomended for self-study.
Good textbook for an ASL course.
Written by experts teaching the ASL.

4-0 out of 5 stars Teaching Textbook
I have taught sign language courses for 10 years and find this book to be a good resource for beginners. However, in the midst of teaching this course, my "video" was lifted from my classroom. I would like to purchase the video without having to purchase the book again. Aaaah! What does one do?

3-0 out of 5 stars Pros and Cons
I used this text for my ASL 1 and ASL 2 courses in college, and I think this text was better organized compared to some other texts for learning sign. However, some of the pictures are a bit difficult to decifer and some of the signs are repeated throughout the text. I would like to see the video and the text as a package deal for fifty one dollars, perhaps that would be more worth one's money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Ok but expensive
The video that comes with the book is excellent. Each example is numerically cued on the screen so that you can look up anything noted in the book and see an example of what is being described in the text on the videotape. This was an excellent way to present the video material. You can use the video this way to have a very informative afternoon learning about this disorder. The book is so-so. I think that Schwartz (not to be confused with Martin Schwartz, the airflow therapist) is wrong on more than a few points. By now, however, I know that no one stuttering book can serve as a primer for therapists. You need to read a great deal, be always willing to individualize your treatment for each client's needs, and be open and flexible rather than committed to any one theory or treatment method. If you are a therapist working with fluency clients, add this to your library. If you are a therapist trying to learn more about fluency, the tape and text can serve as an at-home workshop for you. If you are a stutterer seeking materials for self-therapy, this may be too academic and much too technical for you. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Principles of Human Anatomy
I only wish my teacher had chosen another book. Many times the author goes on rambling on and on where a body part is located from each other and only confuses the reader and never mentions the function of the body part or with only a simple explanation. Like for example: The greater wings of the sphenoid project laterally from the body, forming the anterolateral floor of the cranium. The greater wings also form part of the lateral wall of the skull just anterior to the temporal bone. The lesser wings, which are smaller than the greater wings, form a ridge of bone anterior and superior to the greater wings. They form part of the floor of the cranium and the posterior part of the orbit. And it ends with that. OK, so what I say! Who cares where the part is located, I can see that for myself in the picture; I want to know something relevant with the part. Also, it is very rare when the pictures is on the same page as the body part; you have to keep flipping the pages back and forth to follow the author's description. I just finished his axial skeleton section and my comment is: it is going to be torture reading the author's dry and immaterial way of writing. The author writes as if he is hiding something from you and you have to dig around to get the information. This is the 9th edition and renew every 3 years when there hasn't been a new anatomical part discovered in decades; ploy to keep the money bag flowing. I only hope that in the 10th or perhaps, the 15th edition the author will let us in on what he is trying to convey. Maybe by then Tortora can get it right.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful & Thorough Anatomy Text
I've found this textbook a useful self-study guide. It is set up logically by body system with accessible pronunciations and definitions and with each chapter building on the next. The illustrations are detailed, informative and easy to follow. Each chapter also contains practical information relating to today's medical practices as it pertains to each body system. I was not as impressed with the companion "A Photographic Atlas of the Human Body" as I prefer illustrations over cadaver photos.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very goog Human Anatomy
This is a nice Human Anatomy Book. The Structure of the book based on Systems in human body rather than zones.I believe this gives a better overall view of the human body. Much better than that author gives explanation of every name first its pronounciation and than its meaning in original language.Pictures are mostly schematic, very few photographs of cut bodies, some scanning electron pictures were very nice.Together with this book I recommend Organ and Tissue book with scanning electron pictures. I also liked the littel windows called "clinical Application; that brings you into real world. Overall I liked it very much, it is more than just parts of body. It is with information and applications. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An important reference for Chinese women's medicine
While it necessarily falls short of its encyclopedic vision, Maciocia's latest will become an important reference, not only for those emphasizing women's medicine, but for anyone studying Chinese medicine theory. Since one cannot expect to present more than an overview of the breadth and depth of this speciality, the book's few shortcomings can easily be forgiven.

On the upside, this book contains the most lucid and thorough discussion of eight extraordinary vessels theory in English, as it pertains to women's medicine, although the information on eight extraordinary vessels is not limited thereto.

The chapter on Chinese medicine and midwifery may clear much confusion around obstetrics and Chinese medicine and is, again, perhaps the clearest presentation of the subject in English.

Some common syndromes are not discussed with the same degree of thoroughness that theory receives, but it is better to expound theory at the expense of a few pattern differentiations than vice versa, since pattern differentiation ultimately stems from theory.

This book can definitely enhance the practice of Chinese women's medicine, and the eight extraordinary vessels discussion is sufficient to be useful outside of the specialty as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Kinesiology Textbook for Joint Mechanics!
As an Instructor of Musculoskeletal anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology classes, Chiropractor, and author of books on the musculoskeletal system, I buy and read most every book published on the subject of kinesiology. Donald Neumann's book on Kinesiology is hands-down the absolute best kinesiology textbook out for joint mechanics. His book is clearly written in a straight-forward manner that makes it accessible to most anyone and yet it is also the most thorough book on this subject. Further, Elisabeth Rowan's illustrations are the best I have ever seen in a kinesiology text; they are sharp and clear, enabling 3-Dimensional movement to be easily visualized on a 2-Dimensional page. I believe that this book is a must for any student of the musculoskeletal system!

good for myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excels in explaining 3D motion on the 2D page
Very clear explanations of movement systems. The book is divided into regions of the body and a chapter on gait. The illustrations are excellent and help the reader to make connections between the body and outside and muscular forces acting on it. Highly recommended, esp. for those who took a kinesio course a while ago, and could use a good reference and refresher to apply to the clinic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for every serious dieter!
I have found using Allan's Food and Exercise Diary, along with his fat and calorie counter book, to be incredibly helpful in losing weight and getting in shape. Anyone who is serious about wanting to lose weight, whether it be 5 lbs or 100 lbs, absolutely must keep a food diary. I have tried to lose weight for years unsuccessfully. I recently started keeping this food diary every day, and so far I have lost 10 lbs! It has a very easy-to-use format, and has a section of tips. It allows you to track your progress. It is small enough for me to carry in my purse, so I never miss a beat. It really helps me feel in control while I'm dieting. Along with enough daily exercise, keeping a food diary is absolutely the way to go. I have raved about this book as well as the Fat and Calorie counter to my friends, several of whom want to get it now! I can't emphasize enough how much help it has been in losing weight. I finally feel like I CAN do it! And you can too!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful weightloss tool
The only way to lose weight is to take in less calories then you burn every day. I knew I needed to do that when I purchased this book and the companion Doctor's Pocket Calorie, Fat & Carbohydrate Counter. I decided to give use the diary for the ten weeks it covers and if I didn't lose at least ten pounds I wouldn't bother with it again. When I hit a weight loss of 20 pounds and still had some weeks to go I knew i had found a system that would work for me. And yes I did try all kinds of other diets.

Like other reviewers say it quickly becomes clear to you where those extra calories are coming from. I stopped using the diary and my weight loss stalled. It is so easy to forget you ate a little too much the day before.

How well has it worked? So far I've dropped two jeans sizes. My friends have seen my success and purchased copies for themselves.

I really like that it tracks your exercise each day. And it tracks your water intake. The fat counter helps me see if I am eating a high density or low density food. This little book taught me what was wrong with my diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for munch-a-holics like me
I am a constant grazer...grazing on whatever food is in front of me. This book forced me to take a closer look at what I was eating for ten weeks. It was amazing how that changed my eating habits and made me more conscious of the choices I was making. It does take some time...about 20 to 30 minutes per day for the first week. That is spent dissecting what is in your food and figuring out the calories, fat, etc. I highly recommend buying the "Doctor's Pocket Calorie, Fat, & Carbohydrate Counter" to go with this book...it will make your life easier if you are truly serious about eating better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really good
This worked really well. I got this book about two weeks ago and I've lost 8 lbs. so far. It definantly gave me an in depth look at what I was doing wrong and how to eat right.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Works
I used this book about 5 years ago - it really worked. I lost 37 pounds in a year. I followed the recommendations and kept the food log every single day. It changed my life. I have kept within 5 pounds of my lowest weight ever since. I exercised and drank lots of water - now I am a different person and run 3 marathons and 3 half marathons each year.
Thanks Allan!!

Always comprehensive and current, this edition features even more new information on hot topics such as identification systems, quality control organisms, antiparasitic agents, HIV viral load testing, HIV genotyping, Hepatitis C virus, antivirals, and a new procedure for the motility test. In addition, thoroughly revised material reflects the latest advances and developments. New clinical case studies challenge students to think critically and apply what they've learned in realistic situations, and a compartmentalized organization keeps related topics together so information is easy to find. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Starting Point In Clinical Microbiology
I own this book plus buying a copy for the lab, the book is not as thorough as the manual of clinincal microbiology by the ASM and edited by Murray. But is thorough enough for most routine bench work and is not as bulky as Murray. Murray and or Bergeys would be required for the more difficult organisms, but for everything else, or the student studying diagnostic Clinical microbiology I would rate this book highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS THE BEST MICROBIOLOGY TEXTBOOK I'VE EVER READ.
OVERALL, THIS BOOK IS THE BEST. I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMENDTHIS BOOK TO MY FRIENDS. IT HAS A GREAT SECTION ON PARASITOLOGY ANDGREAT COLOR PAGES.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference book
This edition of Bailey & Scott is the best so far. The tables included in each chapter are well organized. They present the data in an easy to look up manner. Information on individual organisms is better organized in contrast to earlier editions. One complaint is that older names and test procedures are not included. I suppose the authors wish to present the most current information but it would be nice to have a reference to an older name or test when a physician inquires. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Central Auditory Processing Mostly Management
While this book is clinical in nature, it is very helpful to the lay person in understanding different types of auditory processing problems and what their effects are on individuals. There are many different types of graphs, plates, tables and figures which assist in understanding different types of behavior and management and some crossover to ADHD and why. The diagnosis is better understood along with the various auditory therapies available and necessary to assist in training a person deficient in certain processing areas. The authors do a good job in explaining the tests for CAPD and what the evaluation results are based on.There is also an excellent reference list after each particular section for further reading based upon these authors' research, etc. There are many strategies for success for individuals with CAPD; this book covers so many questions from the neuroscience to evaluation to the relationship to specific learning problems to treatment and management. ...
