5-0 out of 5 stars Waiting Patiently
I'm on day 7 of the fast and I am feeling sick....weak and experiencing nausea. However, I'm sticking with it. I had a headache for a couple of days but that has subsided. My sister and her husband went on the fast, and raved over it. They did not experience any of the side effects I encountered. I think that is because they don't eat meat, have done a fast before and are more active than I. Is that telling me something? I am having several bowel movements consisting of mucous and other debris. I also had a cold (and still do) when I began the fast, so that may have made the fast a little harder on me. I haven't used the sea salt, but use the laxative tea faithfully. I have not once felt hungry and didn't even mind my husband eating a fried fish dinner with all the trimmings in front of me. I can't wait for day 10 to arrive. I just hope I feel all of the energy and relief from my sinus problems. I forgot to mention I've lost 8 lbs. as of today. I plan to adopt a healthy way of eating when I resume eating food again.

5-0 out of 5 stars irreplaceable tool for a healthy lifestyle, it's my "Bible"
I first discovered the fast in Germany during my travels, but did not know it had a name. I was modeling & needed to lose weight. Another model gave me the formula, but only knew it "through the grapevine". In Europe, a commercialization of the fast is available in health food stores. It comes with a little pack of cayenne and directions, but the syrup is a combo of cane & grade B, which is not as good as organic dark Grade B. Several years ago, a company began marketing "Lemon Fast" in health food stores across the U.S. Again, it is the same as the European version. After researching, I discovered the Burroughs foundation in California and ordered several copies of the book from his daughter. I lost, in all, more than 30 pounds over a period of time. I now maintain a vegetarian/mostly vegan lifestyle and cleanse at least twice yearly for 10 days to 2 weeks. My energy is not decreased but instead soars. I am still a professional model. I hand out copies of the book to everyone who is interested and who questions me as to how I stay slim. I cannot tell you how many "normal people" have changed their lives following Mr. Burroughs program. And to think it was written over 50 years ago!! This is one book the drug companies would rather you not have, for sure. It cures everything, including my hypoglycemia, anemia, and cravings. It reassures one of the power of the mind and healing ability of the body. Stick with it for at least 10 days and remember, if you cheat, you're only cheating yourself. Good Luck Everyone. Health and Happiness. *P.

FYI helpful hints... *We now have great 'diet teas' available at pharmacies and health food stores that contain psyllium husk or senna. This can be drunk the night before you begin your fast and again the following night, essentially eliminating the need for the uncomfortable internal-salt-water-bath. Have a diluted version first, as the strength of these items is not regulated and some are quite strong. And leave yourself a couple of hours the first morning to, well, eliminate. The discomfort will pass...get through the first two days and you're home free. Get through the first five and you don't even want the lemonade anymore. *If you feel a wave of nausia or a dizzy spell, it is your body eliminating toxins or passing waste out of your body. DO NOT think it is because you need food. It takes a 24-hr no-food period to begin the cleansing process & eating defeats all the work you've put into it. Breathe deep, and thank yourself for finally cleansing that stuff out. The feeling will pass in a few minutes. You may need to drink an elimination tea that night. *Try the mixture with lemon/lime combos and try it hot. It's delicious. Carry a small water bottle in your purse/case of the lemonade without water[concentrate]. Add to hot water or plain water at work or restaurants if you find you must accompany others. *Herbal tea and green tea is allowed, and helps to avoid caffeine headaches from your coffee withdrawl. It also gives you an alternative to the lemonade and keeps you hydrated. *Stay strong in your mind, focussed on your goal, and don't believe others who tell you you're crazy. They are silently envying your willpower. You don't know until you try

3-0 out of 5 stars Tried it with moderate success
I bought this book on a whim. It was a cheap book and sounded like a fast way to reduce weight in a healthy way.

I've had moderate success with this book, which is essentially the lemonade diet. I bought the ingredients, tried it for several days, and lost about 10 pounds in 6 days. The lemonade mixture was able to satisfy my hunger adequately. I didn't feel fantastic, but I felt fine, with no problems.

The book is somewhat "New-Agey" and gets into the subject of toxins and disease and natural cleansing. I wasn't really concerned with that, and readers will have varying opinions of Burroughs' hypotheses.

This is a good system if you really want to lose weight quickly and are ready to commit. Or just try it for a while and see how long you can go.

5-0 out of 5 stars An eclectic bunch, we are
Our reading club is an eclectic bunch. You have no idea HOW electic! We read everything from the lastest bestsellers like "Da Vinci Code" and "Bark of the Dogwood" to Hilary Clinton's book and, yes, even this one: THE MASTER CLEANSER. Open minded is the one thing we all have in common. So let me just say that this little book has completely changed our lives (and that of our husbands, wives, and kids---even the dog). Folks, this one's going to take off, and how! Highly, highly recommend for anyone interested in the quality of life!

4-0 out of 5 stars Much easier than expected!
Reading the book almost discouraged me to try it. There were no hunger pangs, no nausea, no stomach cramping. I did experience a slight light-headed (spacey) feeling once or twice but this went away as soon as I drank the lemonade. I was able to take my medication successfully and the "cleansing" process was not as bad as it seems. If you need to be away from home you can actually skip a day of cleansing and pick up the following day. Going back to solid food was no problem for me although I do not recommend meat as your first meal, as my husband came to find out, it's very heavy, ease into that one.
We are now incorporating the lemonade by using it to skip a meal and snacks. We have not gained any weight back by doing this and recommend using it to skip meals if you can't make the real commitment to doing it 24/7. Good Luck to everyone. Also, there are many web sites and message boards with people who can help with questions about the Master Cleanser diet which I found helpful. ... Read more

From her work with insulin-resistant patients with Type II diabetes, Dr. Schwarzbein concludes that low-fat diets cause heart attacks, eating fat makes you lose body fat, and it's important to eat high-cholesterol foods every day. Picture cardiologists and dieticians tearing their hair out and overweight people cheering as they dive into Eggs Benedict with sausage.

According to Schwarzbein, the high-carbohydrate, low-fat, moderate-protein diet that most dieticians and disease-prevention organizations recommend is the culprit that turns people into diabetics, makes them age faster and get degenerative diseases, and keeps them fat and unhealthy. She supports her theory with case studies of people who were sick and miserable on high-carbo, low-fat diets and who sprang to life when they "balanced" their diets with more fat and protein. Schwarzbein recommends avoiding "man-made carbohydrates"--processed carbs--in favor of those you could "pick, gather or milk." She instructs patients to eat "as much good fat as their body needs": eggs, avocados, flaxseed oil, butter, mayonnaise, and olive oil. Sorry, but fried foods and hydrogenated fats are "bad fats," or "damaged fats," as Schwarzbein calls them. You can eat as many eggs a day as you want on this plan, plus meat (even sausage--as long as it's nitrate-free--and pâté), saturated fat, cream, and nonstarchy vegetables. The book includes a four-week meal plan and about 15 recipes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars After 3 days on the diet my body breathed a sigh of relief.
Consider this: everything you thought you knew about nutrition just might be wrong. After years of watching my weight and my cholesterol creep ever higher (despite my low fat diet!) I began reading The Schwarzbein Principle with a great deal of skepticism. Gradually the book won me over with its straightforward explanations of biochemical pathways, metabolism, insulin levels, and food cravings. Quite simply, it made a lot of sense. I've been on the diet for about a month now and I no longer crave sugar or carbohydrates. I've lost a few pounds, but more importantly, I'm losing inches and it's a pleasure to see my "insulin meter" tummy disappearing. Best of all, I have incredible energy and a delicious sense of wellbeing, which I attribute to a healthy supply of seretonin. The healing plan menu at the end of the book is especially useful. My regular physician would probably have a fit if he knew I was on this diet. I may have to fire him.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK AND RECOMMEND IT TO EVERYONE
By all accounts I look like a normal healthy person. But over the last few years I started having all sorts of health issues crop up. Blood sugar problems, addictions, cravings, depression, fatigue, chronic headaches, major pms and irregular menses, not to mention bloating, weight gain and the crowning blow was recurrent yeast infections that modern meds just were not affecting. I found this book ironically via Suzanne Somers book which I was perusing in a book store. I ordered the Schwarzbein Principle right here at Amazon. And I am so glad I did. I have read and re-read this book so many times I think I might need to replace it soon! Diana Schwarzbein's book focused my attention back on what was truly important and that is overall health. I appreciated the in-depth discussions about everything from heart-disease and cholesterol to diabetes and hormone imbalances. The emphasis is on healing your metabolism and then your ideal body composition will follow. This is not a quick weight loss plan, it is to heal your body for health and longevity, which does include natural weight loss if your body truly needs to lose weight.

I feel great, I look great and I do not have extremes in emotion, fluctuations in energy or intense cravings. The need for stimulants is gone. The need to be consoled by food is gone. Plus I am developing lean body mass. For the first time in my life I have a physical yearning to exercise. To move the muscle because it feels good. That is a switch from the "I gotta exercise to get fit" mentality that I struggled with for years because I never had the energy to even get out the door let alone sustain exercise over time! Now when I wake up in the morning the first thing I think about is what fun thing will I do today to move my body.

I recommend this book to anyone and everyone no matter what their current weight, health or body issues are. It simply is the way everyone should eat all of the time... for life.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bible of Nutrition and Diet
Someone recommended this book to me. The book is an absolute eye-opener. I have pushed everyone around me to read this book. So much so, it should be a recommended reading in High Schools to ensure that the next generations are healthy ones with no misconceptions about diet and nutrition. A must-read. I haven't found any other book written so well and supported so adequately with research and real-life trials. A well done job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't stop talking about this book
This book has seriously changed my life. A friend recommended this book to me, I actually wasn't interested in reading it, but thought I'd give it a chance. Since reading the book, I can't stop recommending it. I have lost about 12 pounds, but the weight isn't what matters to me anymore! I have stopped obsessing about my weight and now focus on my HEALTH. The book is written in a way that complicated medical terminology is broken down into easy-to-understand english. It focuses on everything being connected in a way I never even thought about before - for example - I am sleeping better than ever in my life (for those of you who have trouble sleeping, I never even concidered sleep to be an issue when reading this book, it just so happens to be an added bonus! - I have always had trouble sleeping - not anymore!!!)
This is a great gift for those in your life who are looking for the answer like the rest of us WERE!

5-0 out of 5 stars It works! It really, really works!
I have been joking with my friends for the last three years that I should write a "diet" book based on my great experiences with a diet I was forced to adopt due to numerous food allergies. Little did I know that that book already exists! I had been diagnosed with 33 allergies and once I removed those foods from my diet, my body changed dramatically! Not only did I lose 20 pounds, I cleared up my acne and gained so much energy that I became somewhat of an athlete. To top it all off I am constantly being asked for my ID when I go out and at the age of 32 am being mistaken for a woman in her early twenties by twenty-somethings themselves! I had attributed all of this to removing the allergenic foods and, though that is most certainly a part of it, after having read this book I can now see WHY I've found such success. I have had to remove all processed foods, stimulants and sugars due to my allergies and what's left is exactly what Dr. Schwarzbein recommends! I have unwittingly been following this whole foods diet (protein and fat included) for the last three years. So, buy this book, give the diet a month with NO CHEATING and you will be amazed! You will no longer have cravings PERIOD (I find it takes about 2-3 days to get rid of the actual physical cravings and then you have to deal with the mental part of it) and your body will thank you. I guarantee that in a year's time you will reap all of the benefits she touts in her book! Thank you Doctor! ... Read more

    Book Description

Once in a great while an extraordinary book is published that sets an entirely new standard in its field. A Manual of Acupuncture, published by Journal of Chinese Medicine Publications, is just such a book. Painstakingly researched over many years by Peter Deadman, editor-in-chief of The Journal of Chinese Medicine, and colleagues Mazin Al-Khafaji and Kevin Baker, this book is certain to become the primary reference in the West for the study of acupuncture points and channels.

Introductory chapters describe and illustrate the channels and collaterals, the various categories of points, and methods of selection, location, and needling. Ensuing chapters present each of the points of the 14 channels as well as the extra (miscellaneous) points, identified by their English and pinyin names, and Chinese characters. Each point is located in accordance with the most exacting anatomical standards to be found in any Western textbook.

For each point there is a dedicated drawing, followed by regional body drawings. The quality of the 500 drawings is far superior to those in any other TCM text. There are also practical pointers for finding and needling the points, and cautionary information about what to avoid. In addition to point indexes by their English and pinyin names, there is an index identifying every part of the body reached by each of the channels, and separate indexes of point indications listed according to both TCM and biomedical symptoms. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Point Atlas in English
Deadman and colleagues should be commended for this major contribution to the English-language literature of Chinese medicine. It does what it does exceedingly well. It does so, in part, because of what it is not.

It should be understood that the Manual is chiefly an atlas and desk reference of acupuncture points and channels, not a classroom textbook or a clinic handbook or a self-study guide per se, though it does list some illustrative combinations with each point. Other books are available that fill the role of textbook better than this one does. This one's audience is the person who already knows something of the foundations and clinical applications of acupuncture.

The manual is not encyclopedic when compared with the larger Chinese-language works of acupuncture, but it does draw on them in a concise and informative way that conveys the character, historic application and contemporary application of each point, using carefully selected information from a wide range of primary sources. Accordingly, it could be viewed more as a work of editorship than of creativity, and in a reference work of this sort, that is exactly what is desired.

It often goes unmentioned, but Deadman is zealous in his ongoing support of his publications. Errata and updates are available, for free, from his web site. The Manual is also available in CD-ROM format, and Deadman has even produced flashcards based on the substance of the Manual.

The illustrations are in fact of excellent quality, some of the best ever in a book of this sort. Pair the illustrations with the detailed treatment of point location and application, great typography, durable construction, and well-chosen excerpts from primary sources ranging from ancient to modern, and you have an acupuncture reference you can use to deepen your knowledge for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ULTIMATE Acupuncture Book!
The Manual of Acupuncture by Deadman is the ULTIMATE Acupuncture Book that is a necessity for every acupuncture student and practitioner. With 670 illustrated pages, this book is worth every penny. The newest version of this book is also tabbed by channels - so it is much easier to find information.

While I was a student, I didn't always carry this book with me because it was so big. However, I did photocopy the anatomical point charts and indications lists from the back of the book to aid my clinical point selections.

Now as a practitioner (this booked definitely helped me pass NCCAOM exams), I refer to this book often to take my acupoint knowledge to the next level and to provide more comprehensive treatment plans.

Buy this book now! If you are a TCM student, I also highly recommend the companion FLASH CARDS by Deadman. They make it easy to study acupuncture points with a location/illustration on one side of the card and actions/indications on the other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Chinese Texts
This is the only text that I have on the subject of acupuncture. I am not a practitioner, but had hoped that this one (expensive) text would be sufficient to give me a total foundation in the discipline and would eventually allow me to use acupressure or some rudiments of the field in my own efforts to promote good health.

I was a little dissappointed that the introductory and foundational material was lacking in the book, and that there were no separate sections on diagnosis or expositions of the nature of pathogens. The book is essentially a description of each and every one of the 360 or so primary acupuncture points of Traditional Chinese Medicine. There is a good bit of material about methodology of point selection, but the real gem of this book is the intelligent and thorough descriptions of the points, their properties, and how to locate and needle them. The reason that I gave the book five stars is that it is far more complete and logical in its point descriptions than any of the Chinese texts used by my acupuncturist, a Chinese chiropractor who was a medical doctor Shanghai for eight years before coming to the US and becoming a chiropractor. Often when a discipline is translated from one language and culture to another, the highly systematized translation is more complete and sensible than the eclectic literature corpus upon which it is based. Those who devised this book have created a phenomenally comprehensive synthesis of over 3,000 years of Chinese medical tradition. They have taken on a monumental task and succeeded brilliantly. The quality of this reference is so high that I would even recommend it to practitioners from the orient who are coming to the US or other English-speaking countries to start a practice. First, it will it help them learn the English vocabulary of acupuncture jargon and help them understand our butchered pronunciations of the many Chinese words in an English acupuncturist's vocabulary. Second, they will be able to better communicate their activities to their patients. Finally, the book is as high a quality reference as anything they will have brought with them from Asia.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures, other info. questionable
The pictures in this book are excellent, and can be used by anybody learning point location. As far as the description of point location, they differ from the source used for the california state board exam, which only matters if you are planning on taking it. There are also some helpful tips for locating certain points. The info. on point functions and indications is tremendous. Everything and anything is in this book. Some really obscure stuff, which is great to read and think about. But that does not mean that these points are really used for this, or that you will be able to make the point do that. All in all great for location, but use some scrutuiny when apllying functions and indications.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Published Work to Date
Unquestionably, when you get your hands on a copy of this book, you will agree with me that this may be greatest reference compendium ever published on acupuncture in the English language, to date. The quality of printing and binding is superb, to match its outstanding content.

This book is priceless. Sell all your other acupuncture reference books if you have to (e.g., CAM, FCA, etc., unless you are still a student), and keep this impressive book on the shelf and within reach. While it is not "officially" adopted as a standard text in U.S. schools, it would be an outrage if this book does not become one in the near future. ... Read more

    4-0 out of 5 stars A student's opinion
This textbook is actually one that is recommended for the Nutrition course at my university. I found it very useful and informative for all aspects of the course. Information was displayed in a clear and colourful manner, which made taking it all a lot easier. The study questions at the end of each section came in very handy when revising for exams. In addition the lists of resources relating to each topic were helpful, enabling you to look at other sources for further reading. I found the 'highlights' in particular useful as they covered particular points (such as eating disorders or osteoporosis) in depth and related it to the different aspects of nutrition.
Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone with a more than cursory interest in nutritional science as it provides a great of information on the subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Important work if one understands its place
This is an important work, helping to document the validity of herbal medicine. However, it is not an all-encompassing work and obviously isn't referenced. Nevertheless, the German Commission E's method of publishing monographs based on the information gathered from companies, researchers, and practitioners (but apparently kept confidential) serves a useful purpose. It is always helpful to consult this text to get some solid conformation for common traditional uses. Every practitioner and researcher should have this book, though it certainly cannot be used in a vacuum.

2-0 out of 5 stars Huge Disappointment!
I had hoped this book could be my benchmark for herbal information. What I found was a book that was hard to use with little useful information. ... Otherwise, Facts and Comparisions' Review of Natural Products is a better choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Solid and Dependable Work on the Market
I have worked with herbs for many decades and have shelves and shelves full of works on Herbs and Healing. The German Commission E Monographs is still an often used Reference that in my oppinion belongs on everyone's shelf who works with Herbs. True, it does not cover all that the herbs are capable of and due to lack of proof, many wonderful herbs are not approved, BUT, and this is most important, whatever you find in this book is scientifically proven and you can believe it. I VERY strongly recomend this book, and the CD as well. Whenever you explore a new herb, or need to know facts, check it out in the Commission E Monographs. Then you have a very good outline from where you can start to work with, and together with other herbals get to know and experiment to arrive at your own conclusion. And that is not to mention the inclusion of interaction with other drugs, side effects, mode of administration, active composition for each monograph and different chapters that cover all that is important. A MUST for every practitioner and professional. A MUST for Everyone involved in healing, period. If you can only buy one book on herbs, I would recomend this one. Herbs are gentle and effective healers as a rule. That does not mean that when handeled and prescribed wrong they can't be fatal and dangerous as well. Due to a long time of suppression, there's much information that is doubtful at best, plain wrong and harmful at worst. So even if it's not always approving old favorites, and not mentioning all properties of all herbs, it is an amazing work. Non Nonsense and you can count on everything it says to be true. Five Stars? No way, but that's the maximum available. I would give it many more if I could. But YOU be the judge. Check it out for yourself in a store if in doubt. But don't let this work pass you without giving it a chance. It is truly a treassure.

1-0 out of 5 stars WHERE ARE THE REFERENCES?
The monographs lack any sort of scientific references. A true reference manual should list references so the reader can verify the conclusions made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! A Terrific Reference based on years of research
I love this book. I have yet to come across such a comprehensive manual that covers all of what we know about herbs to date. The German Commission E has been the leading group to study and report the beneficial effects and bad side effects, in some cases, of herbs since the 70's. With the explosion of alternative medicine in America, and with everybody and their brother claiming to be a nutritionist or herbalist (whatever that means) and understand herbs, we need a manual like this that tells the truth. This book also standardizes what the appropriate dosages of certain herbs are to help with certain ailments. I don't know about you, but I get a different dosage recommendation on every bottle and from every so called herbalist I meet. This is because the FDA does not require studies to be done on herbs and supplements in the US. Thus, we can only turn to what Germany has been doing for over 20 years to study these wonderful plants, because Germany does require that their use, dosage information and side effects be studied before they can be given to the public. Just because someone claims wonderful benefits from an herb or that it has been used for years does not mean there are no side effects. Marijuana and cocaine are natural and have been used for years too - I think the side effects have been well demonstrated. It is nice to have a reference that puts my mind to ease about whether what I'm putting in my body will help or harm me. ... Read more

I am 41, already have osteoporosis, and was in desperate need of some reliable information on hormone therapy. I read this book from cover to cover like a novel. It makes hormones and their effects so much easier to understand. Now I know how to recognize deficiencies and excesses of the most important hormones. Based on Dr. Reiss's recommendations for working with a physician, I found a doctor that understands my needs, conducted thorough testing, and is prescribing exactly what I need. I bring this book with me to the doctor's office, and I refer to it regularly now. It's going to be one of the most well-used books in my home library. Thank you, Dr. Reiss!

If you haven't seen Hay House's Lifestyles series of gorgeous gift books, there is no better way to acquaint yourself than with publisher/author Louise Hay's You Can Heal Your Life. A bestseller for many years, You Can Heal Your Life has been republished with bright, beautiful illustrations in full, living color and exquisite typography--each and every page is a work of art by artist Joan Perrin Falquet. The timeless message of the book is that we are each responsible for our own reality and "dis-ease." Hay believes we make ourselves ill by having thoughts of self-hatred. She includes a directory of ailments and emotional causes for each with a corresponding affirmation to help overcome the illness. For example, the probable cause of multiple sclerosis is "mental hardness, hard-heartedness, iron will, and inflexibility." The healing "thought pattern" would be: "By choosing loving, joyous thoughts, I created a loving joyous world. I am safe and free." --P. Randall Cohan ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Saved My Life
Louise Hay has been there and done that and this is evidenced by the content of her book. When I first bought a copy of You Can Heal Her Life, I read the first 2 chapters, and put the book down. I was angry because Ms Hay was telling me like it was, and I didn't want to hear the truth. I didn't want to look at myself and take responsibility for my life and my happiness and my health. I wanted to be told that My situation was beyond my control. A couple of years later, I picked up that copy of You Can Heal Your Life, ready to read it and hear the truth that saved Ms Hay's life, years before. As I worked through the exercises and started practicing the affirmations in the way Ms Hay instructed, I literally began to heal my life of suicidal depression, kidney disfunction, arthritis, and the hurt of child sexual abuse, as well as a slew of other problems. A miracle happened. I started to become happy. Since this time, I have continued to use the mirror exercises and affirmations that she describes, and continued to work to change my thought patterns. As a result of this, my attitudes have changed, and I have become a much more positive, optimistic person. Everything that I need in life seems to come to me as I need it. I used to get sick with great regularity, catching everything whether it was a common disease/disorder or not, and I rarely get sick or become injured now. I am happy almost every day and am seeing my dreams come true. The last 10 years, since I read You Can Heal Your Life for the first time, have been a wonderous journey, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. While I did the work, I owe a debt of gratitude to Louise Hay for writing and marketing this book so that her message could reach me and countless others. I have seen the same kind of results in almost a dozen other people who have read You Can Heal Your Life. There is a better way, and this is it. Give it a try, you're worth it! Love and Peace!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Louise!
I really shouldn't even write a review of this book or of Louise Hay, for I am extremely biased. Biased in the fact that she and her writings literally saved my life. People often say that something "completely changed their life" and while it sounds cliche here to say that, it's exactly what happened. I can't begin to describe to you the power of positive affirmations. I literally went from sleeping on someone's livingroom floor and earning just above minimum wage, to owning my own home (7 bedrooms, thank you) and a large steady income. Not to mention health, happiness, an perfect mate, and everything in between. This book is easy to read, easy to follow and a great motivator. Do yourself a favor and buy several copies, because you'll want to give them out as gifts. I just can't say enough about Louise and how she has changed my life and the lives of others. Thank you, Louise--you're a treasure.

I have a gift edition of the book. And it was one of the first self-improvement books I ever read. I am happy that I picked Louise Hay. She is a Master in making people feel great about themselves and cut criticism and megative thoughts that often creep into our minds and try to make us feel miserable. I can tell you that after reading the book you start to work on your mind and finally you change your life. It has exercises and affirmations that do significant improvements in your life and even in your looks. If you buy a gift edition the book of Meditations is really good. A meditation on headache almed and treated mine right after I read it several times. And illustrations... You can buy the book only to see amazing work of Joan Perrin Falquet.

5-0 out of 5 stars You must first believe that the mind controls your health
My journey through bad health has been going on now for eight years, cost me over $100,000, and my condition has been hurt more by the MDs who claimed they could fix it -- than was helped by them. Enough was enough. Doctors are more concerned about maxing their fees, assembly-lining as many patients per hour through their offices -- anything -- to overcome the hold that insurance companies presently have on their standard of living. And their patients -- are the losers to such practices. If you are to benefit from Louise Hay's book, you must accept that there is a mind/body connection to health -- a belief that our minds cause our colds as well as our cancers. That past traumas -- or simply bad beliefs -- have sufficient emotional impact on us -- "zapping" us -- into negative thought patterns that lodge somewhere in our bodies, wear us down, cause us to be hurt, in pain, paralyzed with fear, frightened into intertia -- in effect, our bodies to break down into -- dis-ease. That is the premise of this book. Should you believe it? After eight years of seeing top MDs to alternative practitioners, I tired of feeding "the healthcare mill" that makes MDs wealthy -- and me increasingly disabled. I am now fighting my way back to wellness -- exploring many authors based on their mind/body teachings, and using their techniques. My belief that I can get well is what is making me well. The proof is clear -- by the progress I have made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Motivating to One's Character
This book challenges the reader to look within themselves for healing and solice. We are what we believe ourselves to be. Our beliefs create our path, and even, our physical bodies more than we often realize. Louise Hay has written a book that inspires each of us to take full responsibility for who we are, and in turn, what we become. Within the pages of this book, you will find emotional and mental patterns that create us from the inside out. You can use the affirmations in this book to heal; rather than, hurt. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Very good information for those willing to dig
These books contain a great deal of advanced spiritual information. The Berg's state that it is information that can stand alone, but since it is a detailed explanation of the deeper meanings of God's law, it is really necessary to have a background in that law. It would be wise to read the five books of the Torah first, although they have notes in the text referring to the appropriate texts of the law the Zohar section is discussing.

Most Christians will take exception to much of what the Zohar has to teach, but that is because of their own misunderstanding of the law and the ultimate sacrifice it required. Once there is an adequate background in the law and its spiritual meaning (Romans 7:14), the Zohar will begin to take on a great deal of meaning for the Christian, and his eyes will be opened in ways, and to truths that cannot be found in church teaching, and may not easily be discovered from the Bible. "He who has ears, let him hear," Matt. 13:9. "For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it," Matt 13:17.

You can also call the Kabbalah Centre and they can explain what the Zohar is, and arrange to ship it to you. Before purchasing the Zohar, it is also beneficial to read "The Power of Kabbalah" by Yehuda Berg. He gives an introduction to Kabbalah, including extensive information about the Zohar.

5-0 out of 5 stars Zohar in English
The Zohar is more than 2000 years old, but until very recently it was kept almost entirely hidden from the world, withheld out of fear that its power would be misused. Looked at it strictly as a work of spiritual wisdom, the Zohar is both an exploration and an explanation of every aspect of our physical and spiritual universe, and the connections that exists between them. Yet the real benefit of the Zohar in our daily lives is the energy imbued within each letter, each word, each phrase. For thousands of years, kabbalists have taught that simply the physical presence of the Zohar brought protection from harm. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Molecules of ego
Now don't get me wrong, this is a good book. Pert provides a (Western) scientific perspective on the mind/body question, and provides a lot of food for thought. The idea that our bodies and minds are bound together as one, through a process of transmission and reception of molecules throughout the body (not just in the brain), opens up endless possibilities for keeping ourselves well and healing when that is required. You should read it just to get the layperson's understanding of how this is so. On the other hand, be prepared for another story, the intellectual/emotional biography of Pert. While it makes sense (in keeping with the holistic perspective) to meld the personal and the professional, I'd estimate the ratio as 3 personal to 1 professional, where I would have preferred the opposite. Whether she is displaying hard work, intelligence, naivete or her appreciation of her co-workers' physical attributes, the book seems to be very much about her. If you want the ideas without the ego, read something else on this topic.

2-0 out of 5 stars Thought provoking, but only up to a point
"Molecules of Emotion" was certainly not what I expected from the jacket blurbs. Yes, there is some discussion of the scientific discoveries regarding emotion, but only in the first half of the book, and even there, it's a small minority of the content, couched in a personal narrative more centered on Candace Pert's viewpoint of her own career.

Yes, the saddening politics of paper publication, awards selection and grant approval in the world of government- and industry-funded biological research is quite an interesting read for an outsider. It even got my blood boiling to think of the promising therapies that are possibly being ignored due to their lack of profit potential (though this wasn't a new idea to me). It's too bad this ends up being the high point of the book.

From the very beginning, Pert's own ego comes to the fore in places in a way that detracts from the information that I (and presumably some others) bought the book for in the first place. There is something about the way she describes her personal experiences (more extensively and less modestly than might have seemed appropriate for a presentation of important scientific information) that made me wonder how much differently other people must perceive her than she perceives herself (even before she admits as much later on).

Unfortunately, this is not the worst of it. The early content is clearly scientifically validated, and describes in some detail (just enough for plausibility) the experiments that were conducted and the meaning of the results. But by the second half of the book, she seems to have thrown scientific inquiry to the wind in favor of unfounded speculation, including extensive quotations of flighty lunchtime conversations she's had with psychics and others, with no foundation or evidence to back up any of the wild ideas that spring forth. It degenerates into such drivel that I stopped reading entirely 50 pages from the end (and I rarely fail to slog through the last pages of even the dreariest tome).

Not that it isn't a bit fascinating what this woman believes (some of which is entirely plausible, insightful, and well founded, while some is just the opposite, with seemingly little discrimination between the two extremes), but I didn't have much interest in paying money and spending time on someone's not-very-interesting life story or wild speculations.

In sum, the first half of the book is reasonably interesting, both in terms of the science and the politics of science. The second half is only interesting as a personality study of a scientest appearantly so frustrated with the politics of science that she to a large extent rejected science itself, no longer discriminating between theories backed by experiment or other evidence and those that are not.

Fans of alternative healing, particularly those just savvy enough to be impressed by passing references to terms like "quantum mechanics" and "information theory" (in close association with "chakra" and "subtle energy", a supposed force beyond those of electicity, gravity, etc. invented to explain the power of love) but not sophisticated enough to actually understand what they really mean, will eat up the second half of this book, as will insecure psychologists threatened by successful drug treatmenets for depression.

Don't get me wrong: I have nothing against self-help books, spiritual healing or holistic approaches to a healthy body and mind. (And some of Pert's later musings are perfectly valid wise words for how to live a good and happy life.) But this book ends up in a VERY different place from where the jacket summary and testimonials would suggest.

3-0 out of 5 stars Autobiography of a Scientist
After reading about Candace Pert's discoveries in numerous magazine articles, I decided to read her book to learn more. What I learned about was Candace Pert. The book contains information about the biology of emotions, but it is embedded in a narrative of Dr. Pert's life as a scientist. Though the story is an interesting one, it was a disappointment for someone looking for a layperson's introduction to the molecules of emotions.

3-0 out of 5 stars It is more an autobiography then anything else
This book came highly recommended. I am a scientist but not a biologist. I found the first couple of chapters rather difficult to comprehend since I had absolutely no background in molecular-biology. Because I like a great challenge, I decided to stick with the book and see if I could learn the technical lingo; after several pages into the book, and additional anatomy textbooks, I was able to comprehend what was going on and started to make sense of all the detailed research Dr. Pert was talking about. The downside of this book is that after 160 pages Dr. Pert is still talking about herself, her-misfortune and the roughness of her life being a woman working in a male dominated environment. There is nothing concrete on how one should apply or work with emotions to prevent illnesses until the very end of the book. If one would like to skip the agony of learning a new science and would like to get the just of the book, I suggest reading the last chapter, chapter 13 "Truth" pg 279 and then go to Appendix A and B. Personally, I found this book to be more of an autobiography. If you like autobiographies then it is entertaining but a difficult read if you are looking to better your life by learning from this book I suggest you choose an other author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant reading experience
I have always liked biology and I have always been a believer in a the mind/body theory, my psychology teacher recommended this book and I see why it gives you wit detail the explanation and even some one with some knowledge of terminology in biology can understand it, and her personal story was a delightful dessert for a fascinating well written scientific book, I have read several other books in this subject and this is one of my favorites. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Practical Guide to Natural Medicines is better!
I'm a former practicing pharmacist, now a health promotion educator who must, for my lectures, keep up to date on the rapidly emerging information (peer reviewed research & commercial publications, internet, etc.) about medicinals, vitamins, minerals, supplements, herbs, natural remedies, etc. available to public with and without a prescription. My goal is to ferret out fact from fiction. I believe THE AMERICAN PHARMACEUTICAL ASSOCIATION PRACTICAL GUIDE TO NATURAL MEDICINES is a MUCH BETTER (a FIVE star) resource--especially since it's a 1999 publication that cites sources including German monographs that are basis of PDR. The description of APA Guide, on Amazon.com, does not do this book justice. Once I got PRACTICAL GUIDE TO NATURAL MEDICINES I no longer used PDR.

5-0 out of 5 stars PDR for Herbal Medicines
I just received this book. I'm a family physician and I get lot of questions about herbal products. This is the most comprehensive and up-to-date reference source on herbal medicines. I found infromation on new interactions between St. John Wort and cyclosporine, AIDS drugs, and others. I would strongly recommend other physicians to get this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyers beware on this one.
This was published by Medical Economics and no author is listed. If you're a true herbalist, expect this book to be slanted to the drug cartel's viewpoint.

Andrew Bentley (Alfalfa and Buckwheat) aptly pointed out that info is left out and it says some data is not available, but it is.

Jerry Cott in his review points out their report on St. John's Wort. Do you really think this was not done on purpose? Imagine the dollars lost if people stopped taking the drugs that this herb will sometimes help.

Be sure to read what the pharmacist said. I applaud you as your lively hood depends on this type of manipulation of the truth.

Buyers beware on this one if you want the truth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Herbal Reference
This is the most complete reference for herbal medicines that I have seen.It contains many common names as well as Latin names. Being a Certified Pharmacy Technician for 15 years this is a must have. There are probably 100 questions a month on what the side effects and interactions are of various herbal medicines. It is an invaluable reference guide for all pharmacies!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pdr has produced a benchmark!
Haven previosuly used herbal medicines, and being an inqusitive person by nature, I simply had to examine this reference work, i.e., PDR for Herbal Medicines (1st Ed). 4-0 out of 5 stars Patient Heal Thyself with Garden of Life Products
If you can get past the controversy surrounding Jordan Rubin's credentials and the "infomercial" aspects of this book then, by all means, buy it! I can attest from personal experience that Garden of Life products are very effective and I highly recommend them.

I've been taking Primal Defense, RM-10, Revivall Classic, and Omega-Zyme regularly for the past six months and I must say I've never felt better. I've lost weight and my allergies are under control to the point where I no longer need to take Allegra. I also have more energy and stamina than I've had in years.

The only rub is these products are very expensive though I must say the benefit you get from taking these supplements outweighs the cost. Also, some of the foods Rubin recommends (e.g., grass fed beef) are hard to come by, especially if you live in an urban area like I do.

Nevertheless, this book offers a lot of good, if not unconventional, insights on health, nutrition, and natural/spiritual healing. In reading this book, one would do well to keep in mind the words of Sirach, "The Lord created medicines from the earth, and a sensible man will not despise them." (38:4)

3-0 out of 5 stars Book = Product Brochure
Let me start bottom side up...

I have suffered from crohn's for the past ten years, I'm 6'1', I weighed 185 pounds when i was 17 (10 years ago), within a half year from when this disease struck me I weighed 142 pounds - life was miserable - I could not be between people, for I didn't know when my gut will strike me next. Where ever I would go, I first would locate the nearest bathroom...

To make the story short - since then I have been on and off prednisone and asacol and pepcid for 10 years, with my docs constantly threatening with surgery. I was hospitalized 2-3 years ago with severe problems.

3 months ago I had another attack, I didn't want to go through all the medical procedures in order the doctor should let me get back on to steroids - so I went on to news groups - seeking for alternative treatments - someone recommend me that I read this book.

I read the book in it's entirety - I got really hooked on some of the products - specifically "primal defense" & "omega-zyme" and all I can say is "it's a miracle - it basically took 4 weeks, and most of my aches and pain began to subside - I am finally starting to feel my normal life again.

I am a true believer in his products.

You might ask why I only rate it 3 stars - simply because I look at it as a product brochure - with very little usefull information beyond his personal story and his product (per se - "patient heal thyself" hmmm with my products)

1-0 out of 5 stars Bow wow!
What can I say? The "true believers" and the people who are desperate will believe in anything. But I do plan to give my dog (if I didn't have only a cat) "1 caplet 3 times per day with 8 ounces of water or juice" of Jordan's Primal Defense snake oil. On the web site it states "Great for pets." If it's good enough for Fido, it's good enough for me. But does it have to cost two arms and two legs. As for the "book", read it at your own risk.

1-0 out of 5 stars An Infomercial Masquerading as a Book
This book is a science-free, anecdotes-only printed infomercial for the author's line of exceptionally expensive health care products masquerading as a book. I almost paid for it but the heath store clerk said that that the manufacturer sent them out to the stores for free so she would just give it to me.
The author contends that some nifty (and of course, now commercially available from his company at a per-ounce price approximately equal to gold) soil-based microorganisms cured his horrendous case of Crohn's disease.

Dr. Barry Sears asserts that Irritable Bowel Disease (same as Crohn's but not quite so wide spread in the intestine) is simply a deficiency disease due to lack of Omega-3 essential fatty acids compounded by a lack of sufficient dietary fiber. After completely clearing up my own IBD using Sears' techniques, I agree with Sears.

Rubin does not talk at all about celiac disease damaging one's intestines. Rubin does not talk about ELISA testing for food allergies that can significantly damage the intestinal linings. Rubin does not discuss either Omega-3 EFA or fiber as contributors to curing Crohn's.

Nearly 1/3 the book is a dictionary of ailments with Rubin's recommendations for treatment. Every ailment is to be treated using the almost the exact same list of Rubin's extremely expensive products from the author's company (oh, surprise, surprise). No science presented that these treatments actually work, or that they work better than anything else. The treatments will, however, significantly inflate the author's bank account.

This book was worth exactly what I paid for it (zero). Don't bother. Reading this book was a complete waste of my time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Intersting Book, Some Useful Info, But Questionable History
"Jordan was diagnosed at age 19 with Crohn's-Colitis, an "incurable" inflammatory disease of the bowel. His weight plummeted from 180 lbs to 104 lbs at a height of 6'1" and he was bedridden for almost two years. As in most chronic conditions, Jordan's immune system began to fail. He suffered from intestinal parasites, severe candida, extreme anemia, food allergies, diabetes, excruciating abdominal pain, chronic diarrhea, poor circulation, liver problems, chemical sensitivities, chronic fatigue, arthritis, insomnia, hair loss, intestinal dysbiosis, prostate and bladder infections, irregular heartbeat, eye inflammation and chronic depression. Jordan sought the help of approximately 70 health professionals from seven countries and tried more than 200 different alternative supplements. His illness did not respond to standard medicine or alternative medical approaches. He was forced to drop out of college and was bedridden for almost two years.

After standard medicine failed he was on a desperate search for alternatives. He was treated by Naturopaths, Homeopaths, Herbalists, Nutritionists, Immunologists, Acupuncturists and private clinics all over the world. Finally, after trying everything else with no improvement, his chiropractor father sent him some information on soil bacteria. In 1996, Jordan began taking a product that contained HSOs, Primal Defense. He started taking it and for a few weeks felt slightly worse. After 30 days he felt a sudden surge of energy and his digestive problems began to disappear. Within three months he gained his weight back. Within four months his body began to heal itself. "

This History is taken from Crohns.net. (A site which appears to be funded or supported by Jordan's books.) Yet as several readers have mentioned, how could someone that was ill from age 19 (1995 if he is 28 today), and began his own healing journey in 1996, have written 3 books, Obtained a Ph.D., a N.M.D., founded a company (which sells all the products marketed in his books), done all this vast intensive research, and healed himself from Chrons Disease. All this was done in 8 years? Maybe Jordan should write a book on time management. I have read two of his books, and most of the theories and information is just a hodge podge of many different diets and supplemental recommendations made for years by many different officianodos within the Natural Health Community woven together in his books to sell product. Most of the ideas and concepts will be helpful for most people, but there are far better products on the market for less money, that will achieve the same results as Garden Of Life Products. Please do your own research before totally subscribing to this kind of Marketing. There are many other great reference books that are truly dedicated to helping people heal thyself without price gouging and playing to peoples desperation. In Short, Go buy some really good Pro-Biotic Supplements, A really good greens formula, each raw vegetables (organic), moderate you carbs, get enough protein, and drink Aloe Vera Juice. These products any many more that are helpful for such conditions are also available, at a far more reasonanle cost, than Jordan's Garden Of Life products sell for; and are just as effective. But if your are having sucess with the Garden Of Life Products, great, stay with it, Healing yourself is the key, but if it is becoming more than your pocket book can stand, try checking the shelves at your Health Food Store and read the labels for similar products. I think you will find some very comprehensive products for less money, that are just as effective. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the office
I have quite a number of scripts but since reading this book I have found it to be extremely useful and full of suggestions and metaphors from many professional people. Doctors have the physcian's desk manual, this is a must for the hypnosis office. Not for those just who want to learn hypnosis. I have used these in sessions I have not wanted to do and have recieved great results and have increased by client base.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good
I received and have read some part of the book. It seems to me that it is very good for those ones who already know a little about hypnosis

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential text for the hypnotherapist
Corey Hammond has artfully combined the works of skilled hypnotherapists into a comprehensive text which details the many uses and techniques of hypnotherapy. Fondly called by myself and my colleagues, "The Big Red Book", it remains one of the few texts I refer to on a daily basis. It stimulates my own creativity as a clinician and provides thought-provoking and incredibly useful solutions to difficult clinical problems. I recommend this work highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource!
This is a Great Resource for any clinical hypnotherapists Library. It is well worth the money. I was skeptical at first, but its unbelievable the amount of information and scripts that make up this wonderful resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Reference Guide
I have found this book to be an excellent reference guide, despite the fact that it is missing 30 pages of text in the middle of the book, an error that the publisher should have caught.

Filled with a wide range of scripts, the book is a great tool. Although I don't use any of the scripts verbatim, they have provided a good launching point for my own work with my clients. After nine years in clinical hypnotherapy practice, this book still holds a prominent place on my reference shelf. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gem Amidst the Mass
You are going to love this one. It is clear, in depth, detailed, and a joy to read. It covers each food discussed with a comprehensive explanation of its energetic properties according to Oriental Medicine.

This book is what you need to make enlightened decisions about what to eat, when to eat it and what to combine in order to have a balanced and self-healing diet.

What I liked most about this reference work is that Pitchford doesn't seem to have an "axe to grind" or a new age philosophy to spout. He gives you the bottom line about food, how to prepare it, when to avoid it, how to evaluate it, how to use it to heal yourself or your patients. He doesn't ask you to believe, just to experiment and use your intelligence.

When you buy this book you will find yourself referring to it for years to come. Warning: You will probably end up giving it to someone you love, so get an extra copy for yourself.

I also recommend you check out Conscious Eating by Gabriel Cousens. It is a good companion to this one and presents a raw food Ayurvedic approach. Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars healing with whole foods
If everyone in this country follows the suggestions about food and health in this book, I believe, there will be much fewer health problems in America.

As an organic integration of Chinese healing practice and western nutrition, this book provides one of the most systematic and comprehensive discussions of the relationship between food and health. Basically, there are three aspects I find most helpful about this book. First, the large scope it covers: from raw food to cooked food, from herbs to animal product, from water to minerals, from food combination to the art of chewing...the book explores these topics in an unhurried, sensible, and lucid manner. The analysis on each of the major foods near the end of the book is useful for the reader to select meal ingredients that can best help improve his/her health. Second, I like the "middle path" approach the author takes, without going to extremes with either his theory or practice. For instance, the author himself practises vegetarianism, as shown by some parts of the book, but he also acknowleges the effectiveness of meat in treating certain deficiencies. Third, I like its flexibility in tuning into each reader's different individual need and condition. For instance, raw vegetables and fruits may help the person who has "heat" signs, but may be too cooling for the person who feels cold constantly, especially in the colder season. So each person can use this book to fit his/her individual needs.

Because of my interest in food, health, and nutrition, I have read widely in these fields. But more often than not, I encounter books that take a narrow-minded, absolute, almost fanatic approach that makes you wonder what they are really selling. Paul Pitchford's book, however, impresses me as honest, intelligent advices given by a trusted friend, who has a full grasp of the eastern (mostly Chinese) food healing art, and discusses it from the perspective of western nutrition.

I only wish my copy of this book were a hard-cover so it probably could better withstand my frequent consulting (for almost three years).

5-0 out of 5 stars No home should be without
This book is great for anyone who is open minded and wants to take control over their health. Chinese medicine has been around for ages and doesnt need a lab to know it works. This book is awesome.

4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable but Biased
I have learned alot from this book, mainly on how to cook whole foods, grains, seaweeds, alot of info on microalgeas, and how to sprout, and for that it has been an invaluable resource. Also some good tips on cooking for children, weening cereals, etc. But I find the treatments to be slightly biased and a little dangerous.

For example, night sweats could be caused by a yang excess or a yin deficiency. The treatments for both are almost opposite. Knowing the difference is very difficult unless you have some knowledge of Chinese medicine or are seen by a practioner. I, for example am both yin and yang deficient, and eliminating the building foods, as Pitchford recommends for excesses, wasn't helping me and could have had devastating conquences. Pitchford seems to sway towards this diet, recommending a liver cleanse as the first step toward balancing most problems.

He is also a devout vegan, which he explains at the beginning of the book. And it is this diet he is pushing, while in traditional Chinese medicine, such a diet is not recommended because it can lead to deficencies. Animal products are both recommended to eat and in herbal formulas. His dietary suggestions are a bit extreme as well, like don't give kids nut butters. What is life without nut butters? A kids gotta live! If it wasn't for some of the condiments Pitchford says to avoid, my kid would never eat. But my kid wouldn't touch an obvious vegtable if he was starving all day.

Buy this book if you want to know about whole foods, but be aware of this bias. And if you need treatment, go to a practitioner, certainly before you follow any of Pitchford's recommendations. I did go to a practitioner and knew what my issues were (all deficient, as post-pardom mothers usually are) and did a gall bladder cleanse from this book with amazing results (as horrible as it is to drink a cup of lemon juice and olive oil). There is certainly alot of good information here, but I completetly disagree with the need for a vegan diet, especially concerning children. Pitchford himself says it isn't really possible to get B12 adequately from this kind of diet, so how can it be the most natural diet for humans?

5-0 out of 5 stars MORE COMPLETE THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE!!!!!
If I could give this book 10,000 stars I would. This book is absolutely incredible! Some points:

    - This book is HUGE!! 750 pages full of information (I was surprised I didn't have to pay much more for it -- for the amount of info this books contains, I would have easily expected to pay at least twice what it costs!)
    - Amazingly well-written!
    - Takes no sides, gives you the facts in a clear, concise way
    - Complete with theories of Chinese Medicine and descriptions of disease patterns and how to cure them
    - Very up-to-date -- this book is not just about old remedies -- it discusses all the issues of the "modern westerner"
    - Very well organized with an incredible index that you can use to find absolutely anything
    - Lists more foods than you probably know of, as well as the characteristics and therapeutic uses of each
    - Provides numerous recipes (though it's not meant to be a cookbook, I was surprised to find that it not only describes the foods, it tells you how to *use* them, how to *prepare* them, and even how to store them!)

If you are looking for a guide to foods that is modern and up-to-date, yet helds to the traditional premises, this is it!
This book made me think about what I've been eating and drinking (and I don't mean alcohol -- you'll find some eye-opening truths here about the water you drink, as well as what the meat, poultry, and eggs go through before they get to your fridge.)
This book made me become a vegan.
This book made me purify my water before I drink it.
This book made me a conscious citizen of the planet!
But don't worry -- there is NO preaching! If you are intent on eating meat -- fine! All the suggestions in this book provide for carnivores, vegetarians, vegans, and everyone in between! It simply tells you te facts and allows you to think for yourself.
Thank you, Paul Pitchford, for putting together such an incredible book -- it's an immense achievment! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Important Autism Resource
My eight year old son went on the gluten-free/casein free diet a little over a year ago. A member of my support group had highly recommended _Special Diets for Special Kids_ by Dr. Lisa Lewis. I'll always be grateful that she did! My little boy immediatley showed more awareness. Before going on the diet, we were unable to get him potty-trained; within two weeks of starting the diet, he achieved toileting control on his own. He increased some in expressive language, but in receptive language he improved tremendously. Dr. Lewis clearly explains the testing options available to help parents make an informed decision about whether the diet might benefit their child. She emphasizes that this diet is not a guarantee or cure but could possibly improve a child's life. Reading her book is like talking to another mother of a special-needs child who is offering the experience of what worked for her. After going on the diet, learning definitely become easier for my son. Dr. Lewis also lists every imaginable resource to help in the appendices. After reading the book and trying to properly implement the diet, we continue to receive support from ANDI, the group co-founded by Dr. Lewis. This group offers the latest information and new recipes to help with dietary intervention. The procedure has not always been easy, but seeing my son emerge as he has, has made it worth the extra effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource To Implement A Gluten- & Casein-Free Diet
I disagree tremendously with the negative review listed for this book. The author never implies the diet will work for everyone and is the sole therapeutic answer. In my opinion, if you are even THINKING of implementing a gluten-free, casein-free diet for your child, this book is a must. Not only does the author provide a thorough review of the literature & studies done on relevant treatments for autism, & defines many of the terms so readily used, she offers a ton of GREAT, KID-FRIENDLY recipes (great for ANY kids that need to be dairy- and gluten-free, regardless of the reason). The author presents the information without bias, allowing the reader to form their own conclusions whether the diet would be helpful. And while, yes, the diet may be difficult to implement (since casein and gluten are so pervasive in our foods), it offers a SAFE, alternative approach that we have seen work for MANY, MANY people in conjuction with other therapies. And as a medical professional, I was more skeptical than most that there could be any link with food & behavior before I heard and saw it for myself over and over and over first hand. If I had a child with autism I would CERTAINLY TRY this. I would have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

5-0 out of 5 stars OK peoples ! If you have a child on the spectrum - its time!
Parents of autistic children, ADD or ADHD kids - you have to do the GFCF Diet thing! IT IS TIME.
This book by Ms Lewis is a great how to get on this diet with excellent practical advice and good tested/yummy recipes for all the favorites including: CHICKEN NUGGETS, breads and food planning.
This GFCF Diet is not a fad and it is not a gimic but an excellent way to you help spectrum child feel, do, be the best they can be.
It all starts with proper nutrition and certain ingredient avoidances. Give it a shot! I highly recommend it and have seen enormous changes in my autistic son so much so that his ATEC went from 89 to 9 and he is now in kindergarten! I highly recommend this book (and Special Diets for Special Kids II!)

    What are you waiting for????

4-0 out of 5 stars Good resource for starting the gluten/casein free diet
This was an excellent start to understand the gluten/casein free diet for children with autism and other special needs. The background information was a little complicated for people who are not in the medical field. However, the basic steps were concise and easy to follow. I especially like the recipes in the back of the book and use them often. There is also excellent resources and contact information in the book. These dietary interventions should be tried by every autistic person. It has changed my son (and my)life! Thank you Lisa Lewis!

5-0 out of 5 stars the must-have book for the gf/cf diet

I graduated chiropractic school this year.I used this book in school and found this it to be filled with lots of info on soft and hard tissue pathology. The radiographs are excellent in this book.Every condition from spinal bifida occulta to fibrous dysplasia is described with the utmost detail.Every chapter has a helpful summary that summarizes all the important points of each condition.I also used this book to help me study for Part II, III and IV of the National Boards. However, if you really want a great book to study for the national boards do what my study group and I did, get the following:

National Board of Chiropractic Part III Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations by Patrick Leonardi
National Board of Chiropractic Part IV Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (Volume 1) and (Volume 2)
The questions in these last 4 study guides are right on with the kind of questions encountered on the National Boards. These 5 books contributed greatly to helping my study group and I pass the boards. For example the Part IV Study Guide hadgreat sections on chiropractic technique, clinical impression and x-ray diagnosis. It presented the questions just like on the exam. These 5 books are must buys.

    Book Description

"Gill Sanson's book is a well-researched breath of fresh air that will help women everywhere better trust the wisdom of their bodies." -- Christiane Northrup, M.D.

The Myth of Osteoporosis is a research-based work that provides clear insight into the myths of osteoporosis. These myths motivate both patient and physician into a lifetime of unnecessary testing and drug therapy — therapy that can in fact be life-threatening. Gillian Sanson's well-documented explanation of these myths can spare women great anxiety. She takes the fear out of aging and restores women's sense of control over their bodies. She gives women good reasons for challenging the common way that osteoporosis is handled in the United States and in many other industrialized nations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So Glad Women are finally Getting It!
This book confirms what I have thought all along. The Drug Companies are pushing all of these "supposed" illnesses on Women who are vulnerable and a bit confused about entering into the second half of life (menopause.) I am so tired of Drs. pushing drugs on an otherwise healthy women to prevent a "disease" they may or may not get. Another great book to read: Dr. Susan Love's - Menopause and Hormone Book: Making Informed Choices.
Please Women, let's Wake Up, Research and take charge of our lives instead of being lead by those who look at us as dollar signs.

5-0 out of 5 stars this book is groundbreaking
I really enjoyed this book. Excellent. Its good to see research being put out there for someone like myself to read so I can understand what I can do for my health and whether I should be worrying about my bones disintegrating if I dont drink gallons of milk each day. I am glad to find that I can relax and eat a healthy balanced diet. I always was suspicious of the drugs offered to help prevent osteoporosis because of the side-effects. Its kind of a relief to know that I can continue to eat well and keep fit and working out, and that this will be beneficial for my bones - help me stay in one piece. I am tired of the fear that is induced by faulty informtion about 'diseases' part of which is fictional and created by drug companies for their own financial purposes.
So I am grateful to a book that provides some clarity about the actual disease of 'osteoporosis' and also gives solid ideas of what to do to keep bones healthy.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book
This is a great book, I found it really interesting and well researched which is important for a book that is challenging what seem to be widely held beliefs (or "myths") about osteoporosis. I know of many women who have felt confused about osteoporosis and who have even taken medication (HRT etc) to prevent it, but in doing so seem to experience serious side-effects. Its a good feeling to read this book and to reaffirm that one can do so much oneself to stay healthy and to gain optimum bone strength and integrity (even while aging). I am a Physical Therapist and I would recommend this book to everyone, it provides information and practical knowledge on how to maintain bone health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening
This is the most enlightening book on Osteoporosis and the misconceptions and myths about the disease, and even more so, about the myths of modern standard "treatments". Written by a woman who has Osteoporosis running in her family; when her teenage daughter was diagnosed with it, she was inspired to deeply research to uncover the truth about Osteoporosis, it's causes, it's dangers, the current reseach and medical understand, and the best approaches to treating the problems it creates.

It provides a nearly complete survey of all the current research and studies on Osteoporosis and challenges the logic behind the current treatments, and provide clear, brillant reasoning about the approaches and the success rates.

The number of references can be nearly overwelming, but they all add up to new conclusions and considerations, that anyone with Osteoporosis must consider.

The book, though written on a medical topic, reads very well, and presents the technical/medical concepts so clearly that I rarely had to reread a paragraph to grasp it's import. In all, I'm grateful for this new analysis and guidance for dealing with this condition. In all, this was the most eye-opening book on the subject that I've read, and I recommend it highly to anyone with an interest in the topic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Demystifying osteoporosis - a good read
It's rare to discover a book on a topic dealing with health issues that is hard to put down. Gill Sanson's book on 'The Myth of Osteoporosis' was a cover-to-cover,one sitting read for me. I was immediately captured by the the author's family story of osteoporosis, allowing what appeared to be a complex, often mystifying and worrisome topic for a 'baby boomer' woman, to be thought about, absorbed and understood seemingly effortlessly.

There is a wealth of well researched, evidence based material in this book, giving accurate information about osteoporosis, along with a clear insight into the common myths of osteoporosis and the sometimes life threatening drug therapies attendant on accepting these myths. Better still, Gill Sanson's voice is so lucid, positive and life affirming, that it makes it possible for us to join her in challenging current misconceptions and treatments, as well as correcting the often unspoken, fearful assumptions we entertain. For example, 'that ageing is about becoming the hunched over little old woman' we have seen in the TV ads.

This is a 'must read' book. Gill Sanson gives us the gift of freedom to make informed choices about our bodies, to create and maintain optimal bone health and to look forward to a joyful and fruitful future as older women.Thank-you Gill. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars this book is total review of herbs, supportive to nature!!
The herbs are the total desire in books and talks about how perfectly nature always supports us. The author is totally on the positive side of these herbal remedies. If one doesn't believe in miracles, this is the book to learn and review about herbs and natural support. The book talks about the overall weakness of america on the part of fame and overconfidence about their medical strength.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cure Yourself Herbally
Much like her journalism style, Carper has written a clear-cut text on the variety of ways we can create Miracles for ourselves. I purchased this book earlier last summer and have found it to be a wealth of information as well as advice I can depend on. She has shown the link between herbal/vitamin/natural remedies and science despite the constant "warnings" from the pharmaceutical corporations we all hear and read. I have long been a proponent of healing myself and taking supplements that enhance my body's ability to keep the effects of aging at bay. Several years ago I found a site, iHerbLtd. that has such a tremendous job at supplying me with the herbs and supplements I need. Between iHerb and Carper's book, I'm in good hands--my own!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Science behind the "magic"
This is an excellent book. It introduces people to the idea that natural medicine can be effective and scientifically viable at the same time. What I found really useful in this work is her emphasis on all of the scientific studies which have been done in Europe. By so doing, the author explodes the myth that natural medicine is voodoo medicine, with no scientific merit to recommend it.

The author also presents the material in an objective and nonsensationalistic manner. This helps keep the remedies in perspective. False hope is not given is not fostered, but the healing powers of the remedies she covers are presented in an even-handed manner.

My only criticism of the book is the emphasis on tablets. This is not bad per se, but I would have liked to see a description of foods which contain some of the substances found in these remedies. For example, in speaking of vitamin E, or calcium, it would have been nice to have a list of foods which contain decent quantities of these substances.

Despite this criticism, however, I highly recommend this work to anyone who is interested in natural remedies. No matter how much you know, or think you know, this book will open your eyes to a new world of possibility and science.

    Book Description

Easily accessible and heavily illustrated, this complete guide to diagnosis in Chinese Medicine places an emphasis on "real world" issues. Focusing on clear interpretations of signs and symptoms, it addresses the practice beyond the theory and leads readers through both basic and sophisticated levels of diagnostic interpretation. Since Chinese medicine diagnosis relies on a subtle appraisal of a patient's disharmony, many factors beyond traditional Western symptoms are considered, including a patient's voice, the absence of thirst, feeling hot or cold, the patient's smell, tone of voice, and glitter of eyes. This practical resource helps readers carefully interpret of a range of nuances. ... Read more

Dr. John Sarno caused quite a ruckus back in 1990 when he suggested that back pain is all in the head. In his bestselling book, Healing Back Pain: The Mind-Body Connection, he claimed that backaches, slipped discs, headaches, and other chronic pains are due to suppressed anger, and that once the cause of the anger is addressed, the pain will vanish. Relieved Amazon.com readers call this book "liberating" and say "it sounds too good to be true, but it is true." Sarno has returned with The Mindbody Prescription, in which he explains how emotions including guilt, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem can stimulate the brain to manufacture physical symptoms including fibromyalgia, repetitive strain injuries, migraine headaches, hay fever, colitis, ulcers, and even acne. If these psychosomatic problems all sound a little Freudian, what with the repression of emotions in the unconscious, it's because Sarno unapologetically borrows from Freud for the basis of his theory and cites childhood trauma as a major source of emotional problems. He also says that his program is a "talking cure" of sorts, since patients must be convinced their pain is rooted in their emotions before healing can begin.

The book reads a bit like psychology text, with Sarno quoting from psychoanalytic theorists including Heinz Kohut and Graeme Taylor and the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition). Sarno walks through the neurophysiology of mindbody disorders, lists the symptoms of dozens of disorders that he believes are emotion-based, and offers a basic program for overcoming psychosomatic pain and illness. His recovery plan includes meditation and sometimes psychotherapy, including behavior modification, and stopping any medication or physical therapy. While Sarno's ideas seem radical, they were commonly implemented earlier in the 20th century, when psychoanalysis was at its peak of popularity, and they promise to become more accepted in our current era of alternative medical therapies and anger management. --Erica Jorgensen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Common-sense pain relief
Why is it that common sense is not so common? Dr. Sarno's book has made a major difference in my life. I had decided that the remainder of my life would be spent with constant muscle spasms and a sedintary life style. I have thrown away the SI belt, resumed walking and swimming, talked to my unconscious mind, and have experienced little muscle pain in my back, legs, and arms since reading the book. Dr. Sarno explains in clear, if somewhat redundant, style exactly what happens when muscles are deprived of oxygen and how anxiety, anger, and fear contribute to muscle spasms -- being diagnosed as degenerative discs, nerve entrapment, etc. My copy is underlined, high lighted, and loaned out. This is revolutionary work that shows immediate and lasting results. Thank you, Dr. Sarno.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent reference book!
The chapters on psychology may be a bit too detailed for most people, nevertheless, this is an excellent reference book for understanding a variety of ailments and bodily pains, often misdiagnosed, but usually caused by tension. It is also a good complement to Dr. sarno's Healing back pain, which helped me recover from chronic pain in my back, legs, knees, feet, neck, arms, and hands, and almost completely disability.

Combining guidelines provided by Dr. Sarno with techniques used by Olympic athletes, I was able to design a nine-step repid recovery program that allowed me to improve immediately and recover within four days. After my recovery I shared my research and experiences with individuals as well as in seminars I conducted for the University of California, CIGNA, and other organizations.

My story is detailed in Rapid Recovery from Back and Neck Pain: A Nine-Step Recovery plan and serves as another testimony to the accuracy of Dr. Sarno's diagnosis. Rapid Recovery from Back and Neck Pain is now available at Amazon.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my life
I highly recommend this book to anyone who feels ill but cannot find lasting relief through western or natural medicine. This book has changed my life completely - For countless years, I had barrett's esophagus, chronic yeast syndrome, allergies, multiple chemical sensistivies, you name it - and this book showed me what was really going on. Please do yourselves a favor and try this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars worked for me
    A miracle of a book. I'm still pain-free 2-years after reading it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Potentially helpful, but mostly a unscientific miracle cure
Dr. Sarno suggests that most chronic pain is of a psychogenic nature (caused by unconcious, repressed emotions). Being psychogenic also means being psychosomatic, so he is literally saying that for most cases it's all in your head. His claims are based mostly on speculation and are unscientific. It is true that emotions do contribute to chronic pain, but Dr. Sarno is suggesting that the emotions are the _primary cause_ of the chronic pain and not just a contributing factor. Because emotions due contribute to the pain, his emotional treatment does appear to help (to some extent) for a small number of people. Since you can check this out of your local library for free, it's at least worth a try even if the chances of it working are slim. In other words, give it a try, but don't hold your breath. ...
