5-0 out of 5 stars This Book LITERALLY Changed My Life!
I've had Interstitial Cystitis (I.C.) for nearly 8 years now. I was scheduled for my second hydrodistention (bladder stretching....just as uncomfortable as it sounds!), and I received a call from my mom, who had read an article about this book. I cancelled my surgery, read the book in 2 days, and have been practicing many of the ideas that Catherine listed in her book ever since. I thought I had researched I.C. about as much as I could. I've been to several doctors, read a couple of books, and have been involved in support groups. Although I thought I was very knowledgeable about I.C., I had never heard of most of the suggestions listed in Catherine's book to heal and soothe the bladder. She lists many alternative treatments, including herbs (how they can help you, and also who may be at risk of taking them), cleansing remedies, essential oils, and more. She also talks about what things may be causing your I.C., additional illnesses you may have, and how to release toxins out of your body in the best way possible for a painful bladder. Since reading her book in April 2004, I've started many of the ideas mentioned, and have already begun to feel better. I recently was at a doctor's appointment for a physical, and for the first time since diagnosed with I.C., there was no trace of blood in my urine, which proved to me that my bladder is actually beginning to heal after 8 long years of horrible pain. Healing isn't going to happen overnight, but if you read Catherine's book and put into practice at least some of the things mentioned in her book, I believe you will begin to feel better, and the healing can begin.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE........
This book is a must have for anyone suffering from IC. It can stand alone or as a companion to Catherine's other 2 books. It has alot of great information for IC pateints (and anyone really) looking for the road back to health. I really think anyone suffering from IC and wanting to try alternative or natural approaches to healing needs to read this book. It gives good and clear explanations why natural approaches may not have worked in the past or my have caused you to feel worse and how to 'feel'your way thru the healing process and choose the best treatments appropriate for 'you' and 'your' IC. I'll keep this book close at hand for th rest of my life..not only to help with my IC but as a reference for any future health problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent IC Recovery Guide
This book, as well as Catherine Simone's first book, is a must-have for anyone who is serious about taking charge of their own health and recovering from IC. A year ago, I read Cath's first book and began trying the suggestions she made. A year later, I am MUCH improved. I read her second book recently and found more useful information that I have already begun to put into practice. The suggestions she makes are self-help based and easy to do at home. She offers a very compelling theory for what causes IC and a practical approach to overcome it, always with the patient's comfort and safety in mind. She also encourages individual choice and research, rather than dictating some rigid program to follow. Her compassion and understanding of fellow IC sufferers really comes through. Finding Catherine's first book changed my life last year and her new book is prompting further changes. There's lots of hope and inspiration here!

5-0 out of 5 stars Along The Healing Path,Recovering from Interstitial Cystitis
Catherine Simone has hit the mark again with her new book.Besides going into more detail about natural healing modalities she encourages IC patients to "find their own healing path" regardless if they have a medical doctor or alternative practioner. This is the message that I came away with personally, that we all have the power to heal ourselves and to trust your gut feelings. Although western medicine has offered IC patients some treatments and medicinces for this dreaded disease, they don't work for all IC patients and some are very invasive. Alternative medicine may not have all the answers either but Catherine Simone,a former IC sufferer herself,is living proof that alternative methods work and many others are finding this out as well.A must read for anyone with IC and wants to get well."The road less traveled" might be a longer road and not a familliar one,but it will get you to where you want to be....a better life in terms of health for the IC patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars I consider this one my "IC BIBLE"
This book is definitely a "must have" for anyone suffering from Interstitial Cystitis, especially those not having much luck with conventional medicine. The author makes you feel as though she is right there with you, guiding you through each and every herb she found that helped her. She goes into great detail about each herb, what it is used for, and any known side effects or warnings. There is a wealth of information in this book written by a recovered IC patient who has put years and years of research into this disease. Her focus is what can and will make the IC body healthier. Thank you Catherine for another great book for those with IC. ... Read more

This book really gives the reader a great routine for Shiatsu Therapy. It also teaches which trigger points can be touched to heal symptoms like headaches, insomnia, sinusitis, etc.

Take it from someone who knows; this book is exactly what any would-be practitioner of Shiatsu and accupressure needs. If your just starting out, or if you've taken years of classes on the matter as I have, Mr. Namikoshi will show you step-by-step exactly what points to hit, in what order for maximum effectiveness, and using what positioning of the body as well as the hands and fingers you are applying with. No homeopathic practitioner should be without this book; I only wish I had more stars to work with. 5-0 out of 5 stars Disease, aging, and death are reversible chemical processes
Reading between the lines of this simple yet profound book tells us that aging is based on the progressive accumulation of nonfunctional matter within the confines of the body which ultimately obstructs organ function until a key organ fails and death ensures. The origin of the nonfunctional matter within the body is from diet. If the foods we eat are not completely digested down to simple sugars and amino acids, and these incompletely digested fragments are absorbed, they only serve to obstruct the body's internal mechanisms. Aging is based on the progressive accumulation of nonfunctional matter originating in diet. If we can eliminate more nonfunctional matter from the body on a day to day basis than is formed, we have in fact reversed the aging process. Nonfunctional matter is eliminated from the body through two surfaces: the skin by sweating and the entire lining of the alimentary canal from the mouth to the anus, in particular fhrough the surface of the colon from the goblet cells. The substance of Ehret's book is the same as that found in the HATHA YOGA PRADIPIKA which is a sanskrit text explaining the scientific basis of physical immortality. The key to making spiritual progress is the complete purification of the physical body. For the brain to function on a higher level the substance in the body that limits the electrical capacity of the brain must first be removed. The rest is then automatic.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Truth Seekers: On the body, food, obstruction, vitality
Reading this book I feel like a archeologist having just discovered in some anchient tomb, a manuscript containing the greatest secrets to life! Prof. Ehret uncovers in simple language the most fundamental aspects about the nature of the body, accumulation of obstructions, mucous and toxins and the resulting disease, by what ever name they may be called. Also how to go about cleansing the body while transitioning to a pure, natural diet that is meant for our bodies. The book appeals to our common sense and rings clear as an obvious but completely overlooked truth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Arnold
In first reading I hade problems to digest and accept author ideas. I think that the most denying part was in my mind. Because of lack of other joys, it made wrong food us something very satisfying and needed. Medicine for different depressions formed in everyday life tasks. After "master cleanser" diet (fast), which was not so positive for me and reading book again I found my understanding to reach deeper levels of food story. This system is also body friendly and teaches to be sensitive with what is going on in you. Author is maybe a little too sure in his expositions, but anyway, this book is a definitive push for me in improving my living and health.

4-0 out of 5 stars New Perspective on health
Ehert utlises a very unconventional approach to wellness that is very simple and basic. This book has served as a useful pivot in my journey to wellness. Though written in the early 1900's many of Eherts's concepts are still expoused today in writings on the acidic/alkaline relationship to disease. Would encourage readers to approach with an open mind. The results I have had from this program have far exceeded any of the conventional kind.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved My Life! Best Book I've EVER Read on Fasting & Diet!!!
I was poisoned by the birth control shot depo provera. Immediately falling sick with symptoms I went back to the doctor. She told me no way was it the shot that was making me sick. She was concerned there was something wrong in my brain and from there I ended up at two different neurologists, a chiropractor, many nurse practitions, an ear nose and throat doctor and on and on. I was eventually diagnosed with fibromyalgia. (...)

No doctor could cure me. They all gave me various drugs, which I took willing.. (foolish me!!) but not one of them cured me. They only further POISONED MY SYSTEM!

I was cured by one thing and one thing only! FASTING AND A MUCUS FREE DIET! I have researched fasting and diet for healing purposes extensively. My stack of books on the subjects stacks waist high. This is by far, hands down, the book I recommend the highest.

If you've read Fast Your Way To Health and/or The Miracle of Fasting, this one is even better!! A+++

I URGE you to read this book! If you apply what he teaches you will change your life. You WILL regain a greater health than you have ever known! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply a Great Book
A terrific book, well written in plain english.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes! Instant Healing that really works
Hi Everyone:
The book is by Serge Kahili King, Ph.D. called " Instant Healing" who happens to be a Hawaiian Shaman as well. He has a retreat in Hawaii and practices a form of healing called Kahuna Healing. Perhaps you have had read his work. I had not until I read this one. I work with various forms of magick. However this one works well.

This is a powerful book on drug free treatment of pain and help on healing fast from other ailments. I have anxiety problems my self, which I have treated in the past with mediation. I have got to tell you that his treatment seems to have worked for me a lot faster and gave me a way to channel future anxiety in a positive and effective way. He covers numerous problems such as depression, eyestrain, and hangovers with a number of ways for each particular problem. What I liked about the book is the fact you can try his ideas right a way, since they deal with issues so close to most of us- right away.

The book is written in a real simple English with in-depth details on how to work his shaman magick immediately, and would work in well with a lot of paths of many people I know. It did work for me. I have also tried and succeeded with his healing theories on other people beside myself already with great results. I would hope everyone on this list would take the time out to get a copy of this. It is a worthwhile read.
Bright Blessings
Vernon

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for personal healing and all professional healers
Both a doctor of psychology and a Hawaiian shaman, Dr. Serge Kahili King brings a truly unique perspective to mind-body medicine, and all its potential. "Instant Healing" is a remarkable compendium of profoundly powerful but simple to use techniques based on his own vast experience. And they work!! I tried one specific technique on a physical problem I have, and in 24 hours, the difference would have been called miraculous by traditional medical standards. Instant indeed, and truly mind-blowing. It's amazing how simple it can be! But the techniques aren't just for phsyical problems. For anyone interested in healing the wounds of the past and/or creating a more promising future, "Instant Healing" is equally engaging and rewarding. For professional healers of any kind (traditional or alternative), it's a whole new tool box to play with. Mostly, I loved Dr. King's accessible, encouraging writing style. It's comforting and inspiring at the same time, as if his intention was to heal the reader through his very words. It's a must have for anyone who wants to tap the deepest healing power of the mind. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars User-Friendly and Empowering Book of Healing
I discovered this book as it was part of my curriculum in Holistic Massage Therapy School. But it is applicable to anyone who is looking to learn about holistic health self-care. Based on the Chinese 5-Element theory, Staying Healthy With The Seasons explores the particular energies, meridians, organs, moods, strongpoints and pitfalls of each season. It is easy to read, and pick and choose which ideas you like and would like to incorporate into new habits to try. There are so many ideas for each season, ranging from dietary cleansing, to mental patterns, to holistic bodywork recommended for the season, that you are bound to find some ideas that really appeal to you where you are now, and others you may like to try later.

This book really helped me to grow in ways I hadn't expected, and to release some difficulties and toxins I'd been holding onto on an emotional as well as physical level for several years. I felt very empowered using it to cleanse and refresh myself, inside and out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Tried and true
This book is fabulous! I've done the elimination cleanse twice to astounding results. I'm about to do it again. It takes effort and about a month, but it's worth it for the absolute well-being you feel as a result. I've recommended this book to many people and all of them sing its praises! You will too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Chinese Elements for Body Health All Year
I have owned and read this book for well over fifteen years. It is the first book I consult when self diagnosing any ill health for myself, family and friends. It had accidently fallen behind my other health books on my book shelf and I truly panicked. My very first thought was where can I get another copy. Having searched the entire shelf and joyfully locating it once more, I was determined to order another for back-up. It is the only book I have ever read that succinctly and clearly explains the five elements in the body, how they each are prominent in their own season and how best to cure any ailment during each season. Wisdom of the ages for our modern era.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellant guide to living within nature's boundaries.
I have used this book for the last ten years, and gone through two different copies. Every season I refer to the guidelines and always find that I do much better healthwise if I follow the path indicated. I also taught martial arts for a time and the children that I worked with all understood the concepts therein, when presented properly. They are that basic. I cannot say enough for this book. It has become a part of my life and a way of life for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Chinese medicine.
In this well-written book, Elson Haas gives an excellent overview of Chinese medicine and how the human body and spirit change with the seasons. He explains how to facilitate and enhance these natural processes through subtle changes in diet, exercise, and rest habits, with additional tips for periodic internal cleansing and spiritual nurturing. Charts and diagrams make it easy to understand, and his clear, positive writing style helps inspire the reader to follow his recommendations. This book will help you be more in tune with the world around you as well as your body's own natural rhythms. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars not enough information
I found this book to be a summary of all the collective knowledge I have previously obtained on the subject of high blood pressure. I purchased the book looking forward to following their suggested eating plan, however, the receipes do not contain any information with respect to number of servings, calories, sodium content, fat content, etc. You never quite know if that Spinach Pie you just wolfed down was meant to be shared amongst 2 or 6 people. Because of this, I had to give up as I just don't have the time to calculate appropriate servings size, etc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Motivating Format
This book has a motivating format for controlling high blood pressure and maintaining weight. The DASH diet information is wonderful---the food is delicious and healthful. I can honestly see myself eating this way the rest of my life. The information on stress relief and exercise is also very well-written. ... Read more

Who can help asking "Why?" when they develop a disease? According to theologian and "medical intuitive" Caroline Myss, Ph.D., and co-worker C. Norman Shealy, M.D., who is a physician, neurosurgeon, and expert on pain and stress management, the answer goes further than a medical explanation. The Creation of Health explores the emotional, physical, and spiritual patterns that form health and the stresses that can cause disease.

Myss identifies eight dysfunctional patterns that lead to illness. Being aware that "negative attitudes create negative responses within the physical body" allows you to make changes toward health after identifying your emotional, psychological, and spiritual stresses. The most interesting chapters discuss specific diseases in terms of lifestyle factors, stress, and psychological patterns and energy factors, with case studies. A heart attack, for example, is "an explosion of energy attempting to break down an emotional barrier ... caused by warehousing fears and anger," says Myss. The authors alternate, rather than co-write, chapters and topics, so you know whose perspective you're reading. The theoretical sections are not easy reading, but the insights you can apply to your own health make the work immensely worthwhile. --Joan Price ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hmmm...
I was skeptical of this book at first but immediately was drawn into the teachings from two differently disciplined people with one theory. What makes the book seem more credible to me was that Shealy is a medical doctor interested in holistic teaching, while Myss studied spirituality and holistic teaching and applies it to the medical field. More than anything, I saw this book as a great stepping stone to where the medical sciences are bound to go in the coming of our "New" age.I think eventually this book and the ideas presented in it need to be taken (and will be taken)into serious consideration by the medical field, as the examples used were believable and things I have seen myself.

The only reason I was short on the stars is because the amount of errors in this edition drove me batty. Sorry, but I prefer not to have to stumble upon typos by a publication while reading!

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting? Yes. Believable? Maybe.
While Myss and Shealy's book is interesting and thought provoking in that it introduces novel information regarding the mind-body connection, it lacks the scientific support that would make it entirely believable. Though the book's credibility is enhanced by the fact that Shealy is a medical doctor, there are far too many statements throughout that leave the reader wondering where the information came from and if it is backed by any research studies. Many valid points and theories are presented, however, they tend to be mixed in with very subjective and unsupported material. I would suggest that this book be used as a basic guideline for the current discourse about the connection between emotional, spiritual, and physical health, but that any information be further researched by consulting scholarly works in order to ensure its legitimacy.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Holistic" is Not a Technique
Myss and Shealy make clear that we are at a turning point in the diagnosis and understanding of disease. The trend in medicine to examine the influences of stress has retintroduced us to the knowledge that emotional tension is disruptive to the physical body. "...this recognition that human emotions do indeed affect physical health," they write, "has brought the traditional medical world face to face with the fundamental principle of holistic health: The majority of physical illnesses result from an overload of emotional, psychological and spiritual crises."

They outline eight dysfunctional stress patterns:

- Unresolved or deeply consuming emotional, psychological, or spiritual stress. - Negative (and disempowering) belief patterns. - Inability to give and/or receive love. - Lack of humor/inability to distinguish serious concerns from life's lesser issues. - Failure to exercise the power of choice in the matters of one's own life. - Lack of attention to the needs of the physical body. - Absence or loss of meaning in one's life. - Inability to face life's challenges and to acknowledge and change what is not working.

The term "Holistic" refers to a way of approaching healing that incorporates a variety of therapies including traditional medicine. "Metaphorically speaking, traditional medicine represents the 'mind' of health care and the holistic approach represents the 'heart' of health care." This book is an important guideline for approaching the heart of health care -- a useful frame of reference to examine how our lives contribute to illness or wholeness, particularly those who have already become ill, their families, and their caregivers.

I too am looking for the tape for this book........

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for your bookshelf if your in the healing arts.
Im my small wellness center, I've sold more of this book than any other. The author gives a very precise and easy to understand discription of the chakra system, in real words than anyone can relate to and see thier own issues in. As a reference book, its fantastic. You can look up the energetic causes of most of the diseases you'll ever hear about, and Carolines sage advice on prevention. Dr. Shealy adds the eliment of the Scientific credibility to Caroline intuitive diagnoses. My copy is dog eared, highlighted and worn. It is one of my Velveteen Rabits. Bravo to the authors. :-) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastically thurough reference!
This is the best of the best. It tells you when to see an orthodox doctor, and gives you MANY choices in therapy options for all medical concerns. It's an all-inclusive guide to ALL alternative health methods, from Acupressure and Ayurveda to Sound Therapy and Yoga. I refer to it daily, and learn something new each time.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the World of ALTERNATIVE medicene
This book is used to discuss the alternative ways for healing, for people looking for other methods of healing rather than expensive medications from the hospital. This book covers traditional and eastern ways of healing, as well as nutritional healing, such as food therapy, juice therapy, vitamin and mineral therapy. The book is organized by health problems, and has an introduction for each method of healing. It also contains a resource page where you can find information on each method.

If you are wanting to understand more about natural healing, this book is definantly for you!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview
I'd like to address the review that speaks of the 'comedy' of this book. What he/she wrote is truly in the book, but it is merely in the imagery section, and is to be interpreted by the individual for meditation purposes. The "100 pound sack" image is symbolic of the stresses each person has weighing over them, which may cause them to slouch and mope, etc. There are also accupressure, massage, herbal, homeopathic, yoga, and other remedies for each ailment. And the ailment section only takes up half the book, the other half teaches about various natural healing methods and topics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Natural is definitely better
This book is very informative, easy to understand, covers any conditions that occurs on a daily basis. We've used many of the methods mentioned in the book and found them very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a break-through in natual healing
When I first heard about this book, I knew this was the book that I had been looking for.

This book looks at alternatives that the medical society would absolutely flip over.

Under each listed health problem there is a selection of treatments. Some treatments deal with herbal therapy, vitamin and mineral therapy, massage, and juice therapy just to mention a few. These treatments have been used throughout the history of the mankind, and have a proven track record.

Part I - Understanding the Methods of Nautural Healing gives an overview of the different methods. I found this a great help, it has led me towards my journey to a more healthy and productive life. The part about Herbal therapy has been the most helpful, all of the herbs that are written about and there effects are right on target. I have researched these herbs and have found that the write-ups about them are consistent with other resource documents.

I believe this book is the start of a huge movement in the world to look to ourselves and natural alternatives to healing. The mind and its natural healing abilities is our best weapon to control disease and to facilitate healing.

If you are interested in the powers of yourself, food, and mother nature to heal you, all I can say is this is the book for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Newbies
With so many books written for advanced HIV and AIDS, this one stands alone. It is the perfect resource for someone who is recently infected. It also is a great resource for others, but this is the only book I re-read and refer to time and time again. I even met Dr. Kaiser for a consultation, and he offered pratical advice that focuses on overall health. I see a difference already, and I'm still med free and doing great! If you have or know someone with HIV - this is a MUST have. If you know someone who recently discovered their HIV status or who recently became infected, read this book ASAP and bring it to your HIV specialist right away.

5-0 out of 5 stars My New Bible
This book has caused me to look at my HIV infection much differently. Unlike many HIV/AIDS "experts" out there, Dr. Kaiser does not advocate any one way to treat HIV. His two-pronged approach.. Natural & Herbal remedies and when needed, retrovirals, makes sense even to those of us who are new to this whole thing. For example, Dr. Kaiser recommends testing for any intestinal parasites or abnormalities BEFORE initiating drug therapy. Many times parasites are present, and the drugs irritate them causing much discomfort. Doctors take the person off that regimen and switch them to a new one therby eliminating one possible combination that can be used in the future. Having knowledge of the presence of a parasite BEFORE starting the drugs allows a doctor to treat thus eliminating possible "side effects". The nutritional information in this book is also very helpful. I read this book twice- The second time I took LOTS of notes and wrote down many questions to ask my doctor should the need arise. This book is worth many times what I spent on it....

5-0 out of 5 stars Combining Mainstream and Natural HIV Treatment Approaches
The book has many specific practical suggestions. And readers will appreciate the effort that has gone into making them easy to understand and apply.

The book also has: over 20 case histories (sometimes of patients who are difficult to treat, due to poor CD4 and viral load numbers, and intolerance or apparent resistance to many antiretrovirals); outcomes comparisons of patients treated in Dr. Kaiser's program, vs. others who received mainstream HIV treatment without the natural-therapy component; information about certain major herbs from both Western and Chinese medical traditions (although Dr. Kaiser usually refers patients to herbalists experienced with HIV for specific prescriptions); a discussion of approved and experimental antiretrovirals; and an appendix explaining common laboratory tests. ... Book Description

Tongue diagnosis is a vital instrument used in Chinese medicine both for assessing the current health of a patient and providing a basis for prognosis. It also informs the practitioner about the underlying strength or weakness of the patient’s constitution.

This atlas contains over 320 color photographs of tongues seen in a Western clinic. The photographs provide a graphic representation of a wide variety of common disorders. Each photograph is accompanied by a description of the significant features of the tongue, the corresponding Chinese diagnosis for each such feature, accompanying symptoms, Western diagnosis, and pertinent background information.

The presentation of the tongues is organized according to the nature of the underlying disharmony: Lung, Spleen-Stomach, Kidney, Heart, Liver. Other chapters focus on particular aspects of the tongue, such as pale tongues, cracked tongues, special coating, as well as those associated with heat disorders and blood stasis. The text is interspersed with many full case histories that describe aspects that are not visible on the tongue alone.

A final chapter surveys several cases which reflect how the tongue changed over the course of treatment, with before and after photographs. This systematic presentation provides the student and practitioner of Chinese medicine with a much deeper appreciation for the methodology of tongue diagnosis in Chinese medicine.

An extensive and detailed index provides access to virtually every aspect of the hundreds of tongues presented in this atlas, and their interrelationships. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent atlas of tongue diagnosis
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in Chinese tongue diagnosis. The book is divided into sections according to pattern (Kidney disharmonies, Stomach and Spleen disharmonies, etc). Each section contains approximately 30 full-color, well-photographed tongues representing the pattern. This makes it easy to see the range of tongue signs for each pattern. Also, the description of the tongue, the patient's symptoms, Western diagnosis and Chinese diagnosis are printed next to the photo of the tongue for easy reference. (You don't have to flip back and forth between the text pages and the color plates, as in Maciocia's Tongue Diagnosis in Chinese Medicine.) This book isn't cheap, but the quality of the photographs and the clear description of the tongues makes it a very worthwile investment. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars My first detox experience
I tried this program as a way to let my body recover from the not-so-healthy things I ate and drank over the holidays. I started with the two day fast during which I felt crappy. But that was to be expected, according to the book. I could not have fasted on two work days - I felt that awful and groggy. After that I followed the 'diet' to the letter, including the supplements recommended. I didn't experience any caffiene withdrawal headaches which I was expecting. I didn't have any food cravings. So in those regards it wasn't bad after the two day fast was over. Did I feel better? Of course - don't eat junk food for a week and I guarantee you'll feel better too! I really can't claim that I felt 'detoxed' or saw any amazing differences like clearer skin, etc. I did as the book suggested and gradually added foods back into my diet. I have been going easy on the processed foods since then so it was a good way to make that switch.
I actually enjoyed the recipes but I would have liked more detail in their preparation (exact measurements, better cooking instructions, etc.) Also, in one place the book states that honey is a food to avoid, then later it is listed as an allowed sweetener. I liked the rice sesame casserole so much that I plan to make it in the future, detox or not.
One more thing to note - most of us won't have many of the ingredients needed for these recipes in our pantries. I had to find a whole foods grocery for some of the items. I also own a juicer - that made this program easier as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars If alternative's your thing--
The assumptions in this book come from alternative medicine--naturapathy, homeopathy, accupuncture. Nonetheless, the 5-10 pages of advice that most readers will be interested in may well be of benefit--certainly nothing here to harm, except possibly the pocketbook. The authors should know full well that most readers' physicians will not be keen on doing the hair analysis, parasite analysis, etc. that are the authors' "recommendations" for "functional" disorders. It just so happens that one of the authors offers these services via mail order, and the other offers consultations, vitamins, and directed detox regimens to readers who might have difficulty without the extra bit of help. Aside from these extras, the book costs too much as it is.

4-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't Do It Without This Book
When I finally admitted to myself recently (at age 44) that I had allowed my body to get 'out of hand'; the first step taken was to get a hold of an authoritative source on Detoxification. Whereas most folks would look for the Quick Weight Loss type of diet, what I was after was a more permanent change in everlasting health.

I was looking for an end to chronic headaches, sore joints, and looking forward to seeing my toes again and being able to simpy bend over and touch them. These were not severe problems...most people would not say I was unhealthy, over even very much overweight. But I was doing it for myself - and my future.

Peter Bennett and Stephen Barrie's book on Detoxification came to me at the right place and at the right time. In this book you get not one, but three no-nonsense and practical approaches to creating a healthy lifestyle.

The scientific explanations are there, but if you don't need or care for reading through the medical jargon - you can skip straight ahead to the layman's explanations.

This is the 'Pep Talk' and motivation that will prevent you from chickening out either due to your own weakness or the pressure of others. Finally, there are tried and true recipes and shopping lists, and even a sample Journal of one woman as she was experiencing the effects of the Detox Programme.

I would like to add my own reflections here so you can sense what its like. The advice from the book is represented in my daily routine. It is flexible enough to be adapted under different conditions.

Here is my Journal Entry:

Me? I'm still on the Juice Fast. Have extended beyond Day 7 because haven't lost enough fat. This is the morning of Day 9.

Today I did my special version of a Non-sauna sweatbath. This is done every morning upon arising.

1. Extreme HOT water on the back for 5 min.

2. Extreme COLD water on the back for 1 min.

Repeat (1) and (2) two more times.

Roll myself up in a thick blanket and sweat heavily for 30 minutes.
Take a final COLD shower with soap to rinse it all off.

-----------------------------

Proceed with daily routine:

Drink HERBAL Tea for breakfast.

Fill up (TWO) 1.5 litre bottles of pure mineral water with the FRESH JUICE of 1 LEMON in each.

Sip the LEMON WATER throughout the day.

I allow myself one meal per day;

1. Steamed BROWN THAI JASMINE RICE with steamed BROCCOLI and CARROTs, 1 raw ONION, and sliced FIRM TOFU. The DRESSING is pure unfiltered APPLE CIDER VINEGAR.

2. Other drinks include a WARM BROTH of powdered SOYBEAN & powdered BROWN RICE, with shredded coconut.

3. Take suppliments twice daily: Daily Multi-Vitamin and Antioxident tablets.

--------------------------

Have NOT had any of the following foods for the past 9 days:

1. No chocolate

2. No coffee, coca-cola, black tea (caffeine)

3. No white sugar

4. No oil

5. No meat

6. No wheat (bread)

This is notable because I have been a notorious 'junk food junkie', snacking out and bindging (I called it 'rewarding myself', HAH!) on fast foods.

Benefits:

1. No headaches. Usually had at least one bad headache per week.

2. Lost weight. How much? Unknown, because I don't weigh myself. But am able to watch the clothes get looser.

3. Joints not as sore; ankles, knees, kneck. More limber. I should be swimming daily but instead my exercise consists of a 20 minute walk to and from the supermarket. On the way back am carrying heavy bags including mineral water. This in essence earns me my meals.

4. Less Appetite. In fact, have not even CRAVED any of the 'bad' foods above.

5. Deeper sleep with more dreams.

6. Less stress, shorter temper

End of Day 9

The bottom line is, when you become TRULY SERIOUS about taking responsibility for your health and begin to live the maxim 'You are what you eat', a book like this will take you down the road to recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Worthwhile Guide--Try it!
This guide for a purifying fast and follow up detox diet may seem rather complicated if you do EVERYTHING, but there are some passages that let you know the key supplements to take and although this may seem hard to accept now, following this plan for about a week or so is not impossible. One also needs to be patient with oneself about how perfectly the diet's many recommendations are followed.

I lost four pounds in one week the first time I tried the diet, and found that soon after, when I went back to "regular food" my craving for certain foods was all but gone, and for others, greatlyl reduced. I still maintain some of the supplements but have reduced my intake to once a day to save money (I was faithful about the twice a day requirement on many of them during the initial week).

I have had a series of back and knee injuries and had taken muscle relaxers and anti-inflammatories with some regularity for years. I now think these substances had built up in my body, because within about two to three weeks of my weeklong detox (followed up by a less rigid diet that was nonetheless much improved over my usual diet), I felt a real difference, as if something had just gone out of me, not sure how else to express it. It's even helped my mood and energy.

I sympathize with those reviewers who felt that there was just no way for them to work this out because other family members could not support it. It IS an added burden to cook different meals, do special shopping, and yes the food can be boring if one lacks time to make the jazzier versions of the organic veggie meals. Fortunately, I have a flexible spouse and have taken a number of things out of my diet over the years--caffiene, alcohol, esp.

I guess I'd recommend that you ease up to giving up some of these things if you drink coffee, liquor, etc. It might be easier than dealing with a complicated diet and caffeine withdrawal all at once, for example. The supplements really can help you, however, clean out any toxins that come into your system while you are on the diet. Your body will start to try to get rid of the toxins, releasing them into the blood, and it may feel worse before it feels better. If you hang in there, take your supplements--I found NAC, Milk Thistle, and, of all things, Charcoal, especially useful--the discomforts may be somewhat reduced, as they were for me.

Still I highly recommend this and will continue to use it from time to time. The first time through, I found it hard to follow up in terms of adding foods, bit by bit, to detect allergies. But I did figure out I was very sensitive to white sugar, and cut back, with good results. Same a bit with wheat and things like corn chips. I've continued to lose weight (three more pounds in the following month, without any effort) and have fewer cravings, so I think it really works.

I've also done the diet for just six days another time because of family commitments, but still found it very useful and cleansing.

Give it a try at a workable time--but if you are ill, do it sooner, not later.

4-0 out of 5 stars Feel amazing in less than one week!
The scientific and biological explanations of how our bodies become toxic at the beginning of the book really enlightened me and gave my brain the underpinnings and motivation that it needed to succeed in a two day fast. I felt amazing after the seven day program. I can see better, I'm not achy and my just-turned 30 something body is ready to enter the next decade. The recipes in the book really help you structure a meal plan for the program and they taste great! ... Read more

Book Description

Contrary to popular belief, the most frequent causes of neuromuscular, joint, or skeletal pain can be traced to your lifestyle: unconscious habits that involve the way you breathe, stand, and move and the way you store physical and emotional stress in your tissues. Given this fact, if you suffer from chronic pain, or treat people suffering from chronic pain, you may need to consider replacing expensive, often inefficient pain treatment with self-help methods for reversing the way physical, mental, and emotional stresses affect your muscles, joints, and bones. Effortless Pain Relief presents a unique mind-body program for overcoming chronic pain, developed by acclaimed alternative health-care practitioner Dr. Ingrid Bacci.

In Effortless Pain Relief, you'll find a simple explanation of how stress creates chronic pain, along with clear, simple, and powerful self-help techniques for reducing and even eliminating pain. The guiding principle in this program for self-healing from chronic pain is to develop greater awareness of your body and sensitivity to it. You can change your lifestyle habits -- and eliminate your pain -- by adopting body awareness techniques that eliminate tension. Chapter by chapter, Effortless Pain Relief shows you how to release deep physical, mental, and emotional stresses through simple breathing techniques, to reduce consciously the effort and tension in your muscles, and to master and eliminate stressful emotions like fear and anger by learning to control the physical tensions that these feelings create.

Dr. Bacci also guides you in a process that will allow you to let go of mental and emotional attitudes that unconsciously create stress and physical pain. She shows you how to release emotional conflicts that contribute to pain and teaches you how to conquer the fear of physical pain -- which can actually trigger pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars A poetics of meditation
I am just beginning graduate study in psychology, but I already consider this to be one of the truly indispensable books in the field. Saki is a brutally honest reporter of his own perceptions and feelings as he engages in the "healing relationship" as he teaches the MBSR program at UMassMed, and takes the reader deep into his view of what it means to "practice the healing arts", and invites us to consider the depth and meaning of our own journey into the field, as well as to begin our own journey into mindfulness.

See also "Full Catastrophe Living" by Jon Kabat-Zinn for a more practical, informational view of the MBSR program, and for the finest practical guide to mindfulness meditation yet written.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY INTERESTING
I HAVEN'T READ THIS BOOK HOWEVER I'M WONDERING IF YOU KNOW MARSHA LESTER. EITHER WAY PLEASE LET ME KNOW. FOR SOME REASON I'M WONDERING IF YOU WERE ONE OF HER BESTFRIENDS. IF SO, I AM HER DAUGHTER AND I'M SURE YOU'LL UNDERSTAND ALL THIS. IF NOT OH WELL.

5-0 out of 5 stars An extraordinarily poetic book about a pragmatic subject!
An extraordinarily poetic book about a very pragmatic subject - a way of working in any "helping field."

5-0 out of 5 stars A guide for healers and want-to-be healers like physicians.
Not only a description of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, but a sharing of what the healing relationship is about. A poetic guide to being with people in a nourishing, honoring way that encourages self-healing. Very easy to read, loved the poetry.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an intimate view of MBSR work by a trusted guide.
From the beginning it is clear that this isn't business as usual; this is personal, deeply personal. Saki weaves a fine tapestry with rich imagery, familiar poetry and robust recollection. With great depth of heart the reader can see into the core of MBSR work. ... Read more
