On the upside, this book contains the most lucid and thorough discussion of eight extraordinary vessels theory in English, as it pertains to women's medicine, although the information on eight extraordinary vessels is not limited thereto. The chapter on Chinese medicine and midwifery may clear much confusion around obstetrics and Chinese medicine and is, again, perhaps the clearest presentation of the subject in English. Some common syndromes are not discussed with the same degree of thoroughness that theory receives, but it is better to expound theory at the expense of a few pattern differentiations than vice versa, since pattern differentiation ultimately stems from theory. This book can definitely enhance the practice of Chinese women's medicine, and the eight extraordinary vessels discussion is sufficient to be useful outside of the specialty as well. ... Book Description Featured in this revised edition are 59 color plates and accompanying case histories from the author's own practice. Other aspects of tongue diagnosis newly described in this edition include the integration of tongue and pulse diagnosis; the use of the tongue in diagnosing emotional problems; tongue diagnosis and herbal treatment; the tongue in prognosis; and special considerations regarding tongue diagnosis in children. I didn't read the whole thing, but I did look through the case studies and look at their tongues. Particularly of note is his "rootless" tongue coat, also known as "patchy," which he says indicates Stomach yin xu. I hadn't seen this from any other author, so it was news to me... and key info to have in your brain for the test. Not bad for OM students in general... no other book out there like it.
IMHO, this is one of the most important books a student of TCM can have. I think it should be the 2nd book a TCM student buys. The first would be a good fundamentals book (such as Fundamentals of Chinese Medicine by Wiseman and Ellis). Highly recommended.
The book also goes into some detail on why and how tongue characteristics develop. Tongue swollen, teeth marks visible along the edges? Suspect Spleen problems because the Spleen is not performing its function of transporting fluids in the body. No photograph adequately can capture all the subtleties of tongue diagnosis. But the extensive collection of photos in this book do a good job of indicating what is meant by a pale tongue, a red tongue, a swollen tongue, a thick or thin coating, etc. I recommend this book for serious TCM students and for people who want to learn how health problems can be revealed by the tongue. ... Book Description Overcoming suspicion, ridicule, and outright opposition from the American Medical Association, the osteopathic medical profession today serves the health needs of more than thirty million Americans. The DOs chronicles the development of this controversial medical movement from the nineteenth century to the present. Historian Norman Gevitz describes the philosophy and practice of osteopathy, as well as its impact on medical care. From the theories underlying the use of spinal manipulation developed by osteopathy's founder, Andrew Taylor Still, Gevitz traces the movement's early success, despite attacks from the orthodox medical community, and details the internal struggles to broaden osteopathy's scope to include the full range of pharmaceuticals and surgery. He also recounts the efforts of osteopathic colleges to achieve parity with institutions granting M.D. degrees and looks at the continuing effort by osteopathic physicians and surgeons to achieve greater recognition and visibility. In print continuously since 1982, The DOs has now been thoroughly updated and expanded to include two new chapters addressing recent and current challenges and to bring the history of the profession up to the beginning of the new millennium.

Book Description Reviews (2)
I have never seen such an unprofessional response as yours however. Stuffing the ballet on your referenced site for your own book (yes it was pretty obvious), not to mention the overall lack of professionalism in my opinion. No I'm not an expert in medicine but I know a bit more than you about computer/network technology I would presume. Then again, I'm just a simpleton. I have no particular stake here one way or the next. I'm not a practicing physician. I'm not even in health care. I'm just a technology guy. (You know, a programmer in C, C++, Ada95, LISP etc.) (I also enjoy the study and design of operating systems and Artificial Intelligence applications) I know... so how DARE I question the almighty physician right? I've also read your review of New York Chiropractic College. Very strange indeed. You would have to be blind not to find the research lab and it's millions of dollars worth of research equipment. Odd as well that you chose to accost the tour guide with medical questions. I'm sure the tour guide was a fantastic intellectual boost for you. The Dean seemed,(from your account, I've haven't spoken with him yet), to be kinder and simply choose to give you a book and send you on your way. If I had to put up with your attitude I guess I would have done the same. Funny as many medical doctors I've spoken with are extremely impressed with the academic rigors of NYCC's curriculum. Particularly those at Bethesda Naval Hospital, where students from New York Chiropractic College often intern. But then again what the heck would I know. I'm just a simple technology guy. What hospital do you work at again? Tell me again about medical school. Do they still teach neat things in medical school like logic/rhetoric/debate? (They did in the military academy I attended.) If they do, then surely you realize that your statement in which you asked the Dean to... (And I am paraphrasing) " Prove that Chiropractic is not bunk." is asking to prove a negative. Under the rules of debate and logic, (you did take that right?) it is, of course impossible to prove a negative. If you lack the ability to research JAMA, JMT or other peer reviewed journals that is your issue, not the Dean of the school. It sounds to me like you're more jealous of New York Chiropractic Colleges campus than anything else. Again please excuse me, I'm a simple technology guy, not a super-all-knowing medical doctor, any mistakes here are my own doing and no one else's and this is just my simple opinion: What do Chiropractors do? (A very simple question) A: Think of the Chiropractor as a conservative health practitioner. Trained in differential diagnosis, the latest diagnostic procedures (You know similar in function to a general practitioner who really knows a lot about orthopedics). They recommend dietary changes/improvements, lifestyle recommendations, exercise if warranted, various physiotherapeutic regimens, and can do allergy work-ups, prescribe orthotics, do X-Ray, MRI, CAT or other radiological diagnostic imaging procedures, utilize multi-class LASAR modalities etc. and when appropriate, they refer to the appropriate allopathic physician (i.e. surgeon, medical specialist etc.) Often those same allopathic physicians refer patients to chiropractors. There is much more but I digress. I don't have room here to explain everything and I'm just a simple guy. I don't have all the answers. Surely someone of your obvious superior medical talent has better things to do than lambaste a complementary profession? Obviously there is much more to being a Chiropractic Physician and this is just a very simple, general overview, and you understand what I'm saying. Or maybe.....just maybe.... it's because you and the de-licensed Stephen Barrett (Who has lost every recent court case he's been involved in and is accused of racketeering if I read the court papers correctly) feel a certain amount of fear or envy regarding Dr. Haldemans abilities. After all, he is a triple doctorate holding DC,MD and Ph.D. degrees. You're degree was as an MD correct? Maybe it's because you and the five or six other people in your organization (which in my opinion is full of quackery itself) seem to crave the media so much and have something to hide? I think in Psych 101 we called it Shadow Projection (to use a Jungian Term) I don't know. Actions sure speak louder than words though. I see Dr. Holdeman at many medical review panels and neurological symposiums. Funny.... I haven't seen you at any of the neurology symposiums presenting research to contrast what Dr. Holdeman has been saying. Maybe it's because you can't.

I do not accept the excuse that these items are too difficult to find, therefore it is not useful information. The Standard American Diet (SAD) is absolutely terrible and it is not surprising the our supermarkets carry mostly nutrient-poor foods. Obviously you are not going to find some of these healthful suppliments next to the Twinkies, so this puts the owness on the consumer to look around and hunt down these items for the sake of your own good health. Prices are not high if you are smart about your purchases and frankly no cost is too high for good health. Do your homework and reap the benefits. You'll be surprised how many suppliers you will find in your area, no matter how small the city. There is a bit of subjective data in this book. For example a description of the Vegetarian diet as consisting of only starches and carbs and completely lacking in B12 and other "meat only" vitamins is just not true and has been shown as such in many studies as recent as January 2004. That being said, there is enough good data here to really educate someone not familiar with nutrition. If you take each section with a grain of salt, and accept that some suppliments or dietary changes may not work for you, I think you can really gain a lot from this book.

Using the book's informational sections as background and its recipes as marching orders, we completely changed the way our family was eating. Out went anything with sugar, grains, additives, colorings, preservatives and lactose; in came fresh and cooked fruits and vegetables, wonderful, homemade yogurt and frozen yogurt; lean fish, foul, pork and red meat; nuts; seeds; butter and honey. Within two weeks, our daughter -- formerly too sick to attend school and bleeding internally -- began to feel better. Within a month, she was almost symptom-free. Today -- six months later -- she hardly remembers she has Crohn's. To say that our family is grateful to Elaine Gottschall for writing this book is a vast understatement. I urge anyone suffering from Crohn's or other IBD to buy the book , to study its premise, and to put it into action. The life you save may be your own -- or your child's!
Researching on the internet, I found out about several alternative treatments and some recommended books. I bought three books including "Breaking the Vicious Cycle." In the end, I decided to go with the Specific Carbohydrate Diet and started on it in early December of 1996. When I started, I weighed 90 lbs., was extremely weak and could barely get out of bed. Amazingly, after only about three days on the diet, most of my major symptoms disappeared, and the rest went away within two to three weeks. In short, the SCD pulled me back from pain, suffering, a state of wasting away, and feeling that I was just slowly dying. I lost some more weight at the beginning of the diet, but I continued to stick to the diet, and as my GI tract slowly healed, I began to gain back the weight and energy. By May 1997 I was back all the way. During follow ups, my doctor was surprised that I was doing so well without any medication, but he wasn't interested in hearing about the diet I was following I have given this book five stars just because the SCD diet is such a life-saver. But I have to be honest -- as far as books go, this one could have used a good editor to help with the writing style and organization of the book. And the recipes in the book are not quite ready for primetime (thank goodness for all the SCD websites and support groups on the net!). These are minor quibbles, but such things bother me. Other than that, I recommend this book and the diet to everyone who suffers from any type of digestive disorder. You have nothing to lose -- you can even read the book at the library.

Each chapter is written by a specialist in that topic, and includes outcome assessment, Janda's assessment of muscular imbalance, the McKenzie technique, and the numerous chapters on active treatment protocols. The sections on self-stretches, patient education, and especially Chapter 18, the "Active Rehab Protocols" will take you step-by-step in analysis and management of a wide spectrum of complaints from acute to chronic. The only thing that could be better would be the next edition, or by taking the 30 classes from LACC. This book is a must for every pracitioner who wants to improve their results with the variety of disorders that present to us each day. Enjoy!

Starting from the chemistry and ending with the toxicology, each important herbs included are presented in a well-balanced format; the therapeutic values are thus projected clearly on the empirical grounds. Book Description This book doesn't just outline theories and offer up treatments. It explains in fully understandable detail why our bodies react the way they do, how we become diseased in the first place, what role the brain plays in our aches and ailments, and how the combination of chiropractic techniques and neurological treatments that target the brain can provide a relief form pain that ordinary pills and procedures cannot. -----Marie Jones Reviews (7)
Dr. Johnson outlines a new approach in the treatment of chronic conditions. I really thought the case histories made for interesting reading. I didn't feel alone, other people were experiencing the same symptoms I am. I highly recommend this book!

Each entry shows a problem, its probable mental or psychological cause, and a helpful affirmation for correction. We can then reflect or meditate in the suggested direction and eventually change our thought patterns or heal our faulty beliefs. The book covers many specific symptoms (like anxiety, constipation, overweight, fainting); some illnesses (like AIDS, lupus, diabetes, cataracts, ulcers, arthritis); and parts of the body (like face, lower back, joints, wrists, and sinuses). Some of the more modern illnesses like fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome are missing -- but their components are there, i.e. fatigue, pain, skin rashes or appetite problems. Louise Hay touches us with her true story about overcoming cancer, concisely discusses how we manifest illness, and gives us a truly wonderful meditation exercise for overall healing. Excellent "hint book" for solving those incredibly difficult personal health mysteries. ... Read more
