5-0 out of 5 stars A revealing and well-researched book
This book has helped me to explore the different influences that affect our happiness in life, and it has clarified what used to only be vague intuitions for me. Clearly Dr. Cloninger has spent most of his life exploring the fundamental issues that reach us all. I think this book gives us a preview of a new approach that many people will soon use in art and science.

5-0 out of 5 stars A revolutionary future classic, here today
Dr. Cloninger's work has got to be the best non-fiction book I have read. This masterpiece is not only a truly revolutionary paradigm shift in psychology and psychiatry, but also accessible to everyone. I think anyone would have been impressed if he had managed to synthesis so many fields at all, but to have done so while keeping it in a language that everyone can understand is simply amazing.

This book pulls together the most current research in hugely diverse academic fields and ties it together with history, philosophy, the classics, and spirituality. At last a book that puts forth a coherent understanding of a rich and full inner life that is balanced and not reduced by science. I think this book articulates, in a sublime way, what so many people of today are looking for. This is not just a modernization of the great classics or a summary/categorization of them but a truly creative leap forward.

I am sure this is what early readers must have felt when psychology was first discerned and debated as a science. But here in this book, what was once just a dream of a happy life coupled with a clear and profound understanding of the human psyche is at last illuminated: a science of well-being.

This book is what everyone in university who took a psych class; looking for something, trying to understand them self better searched for. Tools to discern and decode their feelings, reasoning, intimations, and intuitions. A way to sow all we already have into a rich inner life; leading to a happy life, a good life... of well-being. All this while still respecting that each person has their own unique, yet perennial way to develop; guided by there own psyche.

What is within this book transformed my life and I am sure it can do the same for anyone who gives it the time to read it.

See for yourself and pass it on. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not too helpful
Most of the shopping recommendations are for food that have low sugar noted in the ingredients, which seems like a good general guideline but not too helpful in a "shopper's guide". Also noted are - you guessed it - "Sugar Busters" brand foods where applicable.

Except to bring in extra royalties for the authors, there is no reason for this to be a separate book. It really should be a supplement to the Sugar Buster's book itself.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT WHAT I EXPECTED
This book was totally not what I expected. Maybe I was wanting to much, but this was definately a let down. Out of all the Sugar buster products I have bought, this is one I would not waste my time or money buying. Others like it and thats fine, each is entitled to his or her opinion. To me it was not worth my money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy guide for shopping
Since it's pocket size it's convenient- nothing more, nothing less- it's not promising extra miracles or secrets. The reader from Leverett, MA is a bit naive to comment on the authors pushing Sugar Busters products - this is America, folks, people are going to try and make an extra buck - it doesn't mean you have to buy the specific products suggested. You should read the book to understand why you should pick certain foods. That should always serve as your general guideline when a food is in question - this guide just serves as a quick handy reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Guidelines for ADHD families
As a psychologist who works with families of ADHD children, I find that dietary modifications are very important. Far too often kids have meals at school that cause them to crash, get out of control, and then the parents are left with the blame. Also parents often do not know what to change in their child's diet to help them focus and to avoid the mood swings that are common with kids who have been diagnosed with ADHD. This book is a small but very useful guideline for parents and I encourge any family which has a child with ADHD to think about using it. The changes are not overly draconian and can be made simply by substituting items when you go shopping. It can make a BIG difference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handy for beginners
This small guide is very handy for those of you just getting started on this diet. It lists the "legel" and "illegal" foods and has space for your own notes. I found that I only needed it for a little while though. When you've been on this diet for a while as I have, you get a feel for what and what not to buy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE text on contemporary herbal medicine
Kerry Bone, one of Australia's most eminent herbalists, and Simon Mills, a highly respected practitioner from the UK have joined forces to produce a text that was sorely needed by herbalists and naturopaths everywhere.

The information is concise, clear, up-to-date, gives clear scientific explanations for the actions of herbs, while acknowledging traditional usage and folklore.

This is not just another coffee table book about herbs - it's the real thing. I have completed five years of formal training in herbal medicine, and this has been the most extraordinary book I've encountered. If you are studying complementary medicine of any modality, I highly recommend you buy it. If you're a student or graduate naturopath or herbalist, it is essential.

5-0 out of 5 stars Textbook for Natural Health Professionals
This book is essential for those seiously interested in herbal medicine. The book begins by explaining various therapeutic systems and basic principles of treatment and safety for the health care professional. Plant compounds and their effects on the body are explained in a straight forward manner that helps one understand a subject that is usually quite difficult. The materia medica section (plant monographs) lists 45 herbs and the pertinent information necessary to use them with success and safety. I believe this book is as good as it gets in herbal medicine, I can't wait for more plant monograph information from Mills and Bone.

5-0 out of 5 stars from the Medical Herbalism journal
Principles and Practice is designed as a text that would accompany a college-level program in the fundamentals of herbal medicine as practiced in the modern British tradition. The authors are senior educators in that system, Mills in Britain and Bone in Australia. This textbook easily meets the scientific standards of a contemporary medical school. Yet it does not slight traditions, and the materia medica sections contain, in addition to an unusually complete scientific review, details of the plants' traditional uses. The therapeutics sections reflect traditional approaches rather than single-bullet modern "scientific" herbalism. The authors collective experience -- more than forty years between the two -- provides balance in the interpretation of the science and the relative importance of hypothetical aspects of toxicology and potential adverse effects. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Useful for the practicing physician and student
Pretty good book though I was surprised about the author's comment about the late, great osteopath Larry Jones who actually developed positional release through strain/counterstrain.I remember Larry as being a friendly, helpful chap who was much more flexible regarding his techniques rather than the rigid clinician that the author describes. Regardless, the British Osteopath Chaitow goes into details of the various positional release techniques such as strain/counterstrain, functional release etc. which helps clarifies all the terminology. Chaitow also has a video which is a good acompaniment to the book. Kind of wish I had this for the boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's THE book !
On a very complete way, once more, Chaitow shows on Positional Release Techiniques important ways to restablish functional state of different structure, such as muscle spasm, enhacing circulation and more. A very fine book that will be usefull for many manual trehapists. If you have any doubt, don't wait more, acquire it ! ... Read more

Book Description

The Cardiovascular Cure offers a groundbreaking approach to preventing heart attack and stroke by enhancing your body’s own natural defenses. Dr. John Cooke, head of Stanford Medical School’s vascular unit, has devised a powerful new method for fighting cardiovascular disease without bypass surgery or angioplasty. Drawing on his own investigations, as well as Nobel Prize-winning research from a team of American scientists, Dr. Cooke provides heart patients with a diet, supplement, and exercise program that will help them feel better in as little as two weeks. His program also works to prevent heart disease in those at risk.

In 1998, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded for the discovery of EDRF (endothelium-derived relaxing factor), a chemical produced in the lining of the blood vessels, which keeps them free of plaque. Dr. Cooke and other investigators have found that specific nutrients can enhance EDRF production and improve blood flow in people with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, or other risk factors for heart disease.

This potentially life-saving book shows how anyone can achieve healthier blood vessels (the key to preventing heart disease). A two-week menu plan contains recipes that emphasize EDRF-enhancing foods, and there is detailed information on supplemental nutrients and vitamins that are useful in strengthening the cardiovascular system. Recipes from breakfast (Banana Date-Nut Bread; Blueberry Oat Pancakes; Pineapple Ginger or Tropical Smoothies; Pumpkin Muffins) to dinner (Moroccan Red Snapper; Chicken Wrap with Refried Beans; Soy-Glazed Salmon; Turkey Meatloaf) feature healthy fats found in fish, nuts, and olive oil. There is also welcome news that red wine and chocolate can be good for you (there are recipes for Double Chocolate Cake and Chocolate Raspberry Surprise).

The exercise program consists of the same therapeutic plans Dr. Cooke has prescribed for even his most severely ill patients, many of whom begin to walk and even exercise more vigorously without pain after two weeks. In addition, there are aerobic workouts designed for more active patients. Dr. Cooke also provides state-of-the-art information (pro and con) on conventional drugs–from aspirin to beta blockers–and medical tests and procedures to further combat cardiovascular disease.

With an introduction by Sir John Vane, a Nobel Prize-winning cardiovascular scientist, this book will provide anyone concerned about his or her cardiovascular health with new hope for a pain-free, disease-free life.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cardiovascular Cure by John Cooke et al.
This is an excellent book on the workings of the heart.
It explains how a healthy endotheliam releases its own nitro.
Small amounts of L-arginine potentiate nitric oxide. This process
increases blood flow and reverses heart disease. The nitric
oxide relaxes blood vessels and facilitates blood flow.
The endothelium is known to potentiate the increase in blood
flow. This book will help to formulate an optimal strategy
to deal with impediments to blood flow and nutritional issues
which are at the periphery of heart health issues. It would be
an excellent addition to the medicinal personal health library.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Important Book in your Life
My sister bought me this book, right after I had some heart palpitations and was admitted to a hospital. I read the book THREE times! Dr. Cooke verifies what I already know and believe and gave me many more additional insights as well.

But does it work? I applied Dr. Cooke's principles and after only six weeks I saw major results, confirmed by my cardiologist, as well as with blood tests.

Needless to say I bought 15 copies of the book and gave one to each of my family as presents. I will also buy more for my best friends.

This book truly saved my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars honest doctor
It is not often that a Doctor writes so honestly. I love the recommendation to utilize diet and medication before resorting to invasive treatment.
Dr. Cooke has researched a timely and relevant field. He has the good sense to enlist assistance in articulating his research to the public in such an honest and straightforward manner.
He is a credit to his field of "The Youngest Science" as Dr. Lewis Thomas called it. ... Read more

Book Description

Since all women experience menopause differently, shouldn't there be more than one treatment? For decades, it was estrogen that was supposedly the ultimate cure-all for "the change." Recently, progesterone has been touted as the most effective menopause treatment. Dr. Joseph Collins reveals there is no magic hormone or combination of hormones that can be indiscriminately prescribed to all women. In fact, he has identified 12 different types of menopause, each requiring a treatment that is as unique as the women experiencing it.

In What's Your Menopause Type? you'll discover Dr. Collin's revolutionary program designed to help you take charge of this life stage. Using a revealing questionnaire, he shows you how to determine your own menopause type and then prescribes the best nutritional, herbal, glandular, or hormonal treatment for your unique symptoms. He also provides everything you need to know to better understand this stage of life such as:

Which natural and conventional treatments are best for you—and which to avoid
How to weigh the risks and benefits of hormone-replacement therapy
A complete description of hormones and their effects on your body
Advice on how to order hormone tests
Suggestions for choosing a "hormone educated" doctor
And much, much more!

With the help of Dr. Collins and this empowering book, you can take charge of menopause and get on with your life!

"At last, a well-referenced resource for pharmacists, other health-care professionals, and women on the advantages of natural vs. synthetic hormone-replacement therapy. An invaluable resource for those interested in customized natural hormone-replacement therapy. This book is the ammunition that many need to prove the value of natural hormone replacement." —Dana Reed-Kane, Pharm.D., F.A.C.A, F.I.A.C.P.

"Provides much-needed information that will allow millions of women to work with their doctors to effectively solve the problems associated with menopause." —Richard C. Heitsch, M.D.

"A valuable tool for anyone researching menopause." —James E. Paoletti, R.Ph.

"Finally, a book that teaches the importance of balance and actually shows everyone what many women have suspected all along: There is more than one type of menopause." —Luana Stone, menopause patient

5-0 out of 5 stars Brave new perspective...
I have read the books - all the good ones I thought; I've researched the treatments; I've talked (& talked...) to several physicians, to other women - nothing has even come close to this book. This makes sense! We are all so unique - biologically, psychologically, chemically; why would our passage through menopause not be unique as well? Of course it is!

Well written, logical & filled with simple yet revolutionary new alternatives to use immediately for the irritation, anxiety, memory-lapses, hot flashes, night sweats, you-name-it... that you're experiencing, the book gives you some control over what you're experiencing.

I knew I was doing something wrong (though I was trying almost everything!), but didn't know what. Now the pieces fit!

Beg, borrow or steal if you have to, but get a copy for your home library; you'll refer to it again & again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Woman,40+years old? Run, don't walk, to buy this book!
Finally, sense to the confusing passage of menopause. Why do some women hardly notice the change at all? Why does one do well on estrogen while another, natural progesterone only? Why do some women's discomforts resolve while others continue to baffle? Not only does Dr. Collins make all of this simple to understand, but he offers straight forward protocol for analyzing, understanding and prescribing for the whole range of individual differences of menopause. What a relief, to see light through the tunnel. The book is in my back pocket. The appointment is made. My Naturopath and I now have the tools to mend my menopausal way.

5-0 out of 5 stars A practicing doctors prespective
I am a practicing Naturopathic Physician. Dr Collins, has provided me with a great tool to further my understanding of the complexity of menopause. I have had cases that have not responded to what was a resonable treatment plan. After reading "What's your menopause type" I now have a new insight into those patients and their needs. To have the "types" defined and put into categories lends to a greater understanding for the practitioner. The "menopause Type Questionnaire", combined with the labatory hormone levels is very useful information that should help everyone who is working with this transitional time in a womans life. The information on the nutrition and supplements is excellent. I applaud Dr Collins for his commitment and dedication to an area of medicine that is in great need of more information and understanding. If you are practitioner who deals with menopausal patients, I strongly suggest you read and understand what Dr collins has to say. If you are not a practitioner but would like a better understanding of menopause, this is a good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's Your Menopause Type?
While reading "What's Your Menopause Type?", one can feel the heart felt compassion of the author. His writing is down to earth, easy to understand, and the resource information is invaluable. This book enables you to take control of your own life. Dr. Collins has finally put to rest the old myth that menopause is the same for all women. I would suggest that every man read this book, especially to help them understand their loved ones. As well as having valuable information on nutrition, herbs and hormones, he gives the reader access to a web site that will enable them to find physicians and pharmacists that are commented to treating each menopausal woman. I know I will keep this book in my library as a valuable resource, and I would like to personally thank Dr. Collins for his sensitivity with respect to woman and menopause.

5-0 out of 5 stars THANK YOU
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Finally a book that gets rid of the hit-or-miss, one-size-fits-all, try-anything-that-might-work-to-get-relief approach to treating peri-menopause and menopause. Progesterone cream just wasn't doing anything for me......and rightly so....from taking the test in the book, I learned that progesterone is NOT what I need. I also didn't recognise some of my symptoms as being menopausal until I read about my specific type. Now I have a better understanding of why I have been so miserable these last 2 1/2 years and I have the tools to get better! I bought the book two days ago, started an herbal formula program today, and I already feel better. Every woman over 40 needs this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The People's Pharmacy by Joe Graedon
This is an excellent reference work. The author defines a
typical drug and explains the FDA process of oversight. For
a variety of drugs, he explains the benefits, as well as
the downside. There are extensive sections on adverse drug
reactions. Toward the end of the book, the author explains
how to save money on drugs and safe self-treatment programs.
Overall, the book is a valuable addition to any personal
health care library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good to have on hand if you self-medicate!
If you take any herbal supplements, this might just be a good book to have as a reference. Did you know that taking St. John's wort and antidepressants can cause excess serotonin to be produced resulting in severe agitation, nausea, confusion and possibly even a heart attack? Well, according to a list of drugs that don't mix, that could happen.

The authors suggest you read this book before taking any medications (prescriptions and OTC drugs). You might also want to ask your doctor if there is any medication you should not take with any new prescription drug he gives you. Most pharmacies will give you a list, but more often than not, there is no information on herbal medications or reactions.

Kava Kava can cause sedation if taken with Xanaz or Valium. Xanax and Valium also should never be taken with alcohol or it will cause extreme sedation.

Ginkgo biloba can cause excessive bleeding if taken with Coumadin or Aspirin. Ginseng can increase the potency of estrogen. Echinacea should not be taken with Ketoconazole or methotrexate for more than eight weeks or it will cause liver damage.

If Antibiotics are taken with milk or other dairy products, it may not be fully absorbed and cause the infection to persist.

A great book to help you see what you can and can't take together. Hopefully you will just take Herbs. They usually have less side effects, but you do have to read up about them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every home library should have a copy!
After checking out the Graedon's book, we stocked up on a few items as we headed out of town for a weekend camping trip. One of their recommendations is Alka-Seltzer for bee stings. (We had never heard of this!) When one of our daughters was unfortunate enough to cross paths with a bee while identifying wild flowers, we popped a wet Alka-Seltzer on the site of the sting. She was skeptical, but the pain and swelling was completely gone in a few minutes. We won't go anywhere without Alka-Seltzer this summer and a few of the other home remedies they recommend. Excellent! Everybody needs a copy in their home library.

1-0 out of 5 stars Aspartame (neurotoxin) for osteoarthritis?
The example of a man who consumed a six-pack of diet cola and his arthritis improved by the end of the football game he was watching is hard to believe. I was sick for years from consuming only a small amount of diet cola or NutraSweet in such things as Crystal Lite. When I drank the entire can of a 12 oz can of Diet Coke instead of the usual small amount, I became so ill immediately that I had to see a doctor right away.

1-0 out of 5 stars Aspartame/NutraSweet - Don't trust their endorsement
Diet cola is recommended by Graedon and it has made thousands of people ill world-wide. Check it out. I was sick for years and as soon as I eliminated any aspartame from my diet I began to feel better, my bleeding nose, earache, and swollen glands disappeared. I was using only a small amount, so if you are using any at all, check it out for yourself. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I use this book extensively
This book is the required text of my dietetics coursework time and time again and thus I use it extensively. At first I resented the very large and heavy book, but more and more I find myself turning to it for answers, even for things that aren't school-related. My university has a book rental program. Previously I'd only rented the book, but now, as I sit inbetween semesters, I find myself missing it terribly. The moment the bookstore opens I will be buying this book for keeps.

I give it four stars because it's cumbersome and dry, although on the positive side you can point out it's cumbersome and dry because it's such an exhaustive and scientific coverage of the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good information for the Healthy & ILL
It is a book that will answer all your questions regarding Food, Diet and Nutrition exactly as its title suggests.
My father is in a "Presistant Vegigative State" due to a massive hammerhadge, and thats what triggered me to look for a good book that will help me to deal with his special feeding requirment. Not only that I have found very valuable information concerning my fathers situation, but I also found excellent information for me and my wife so we followed a dietery program to loose some weight.
Unfortunatly in 'Kuwait' where we live,we have very limited sources of information regarding Food and Nutrition so we needed a reference book that explains every term and has all information needed in details such as the tables and calculating formulas and soforth.
In my opinion this is 'a most have book', and in the field of Nutrition it is 'Second-to-non'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Krause's Food, Nutrition and Diet Therapy (eds; Mahan and Escott-Stump)10th ed is 1000% user friendly! Each chapter starts off with a glossary of terms in the ensuing pages which levels the learning field. Colorful charts on practical information are generously sprinkled in every chapter with clear illustrations on anatomy, energy reactions, and algorithms. You'll find lots of "ah ha" moments are you go through this book like I did. An example was the increased metabolic rate by adding spice to a meal! And the reference was also right there!

Each author's excitment and passion for the topic covered comes through the pages loud and clear. Cleverly colored boxes of strategically placed information capture your eye and your mind! Another example.. in Chapter 6 on Water and Electrolytes.. the percentage loss of body water and degree of disability associated with the same could not be made any more obvious.. and you just don't forget the message.

This resource covers everything from herbal therapies and rationale to heart transplant and all points in between. Over 1150 pages to get the new Millennium off to a smart start! I already know this book will be among the most used in my professional library. It is highly recommended.

Thousands of years ago, Ayurveda described multiple levels of the radial pulse that could be used to interpret the status of the organs and systems of the body as well as the mental and physical constitutions of the individual. Imbalances and potential disease states can be detected in their early stages, giving one the opportunity to correct them before they affect the quality of life. 5-0 out of 5 stars This book will change your life!
This book will change your life for the better and your health will never be the same. This book impowered me to eliminate my own allergies and those of friends and family permanately. The author explains in her book by using simple spinal stimulation we can reprogram our immune system to longer react to substances we are treating (dust, mold, foods, etc.).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
A highly intelligent overview of many illness that are directly or indirectly connected to allergies. What struck me most was the way the author shows a truly deep understanding of the complex causes of each illness and yet offers meaningful treatment options. It should be noted that the book is primarily intended as an introduction (though it goes further than any introduction) to using NAET - a particular type of allergy desensitisation. NAET is quite revolutionary in its approach and the combination of insight into disease and intelligent treatment options makes this book a winner for anyone with immune disorders. So much more sophisticated (though easy to understand) than the vast majority of books on immune disorders/allergies out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars A necessity for anyone with allergies or immune disorders
Although a bit wordy, Dr. Cutler's book is an necessity for anyone with allergies or immune disorders, especially those undergoing NAET accupuncture therapy. Dr. Cutler supplies numerous case studies, many examples far more severe than the person who reads the book, but helpful when assessing one's condition and also fairly interesting. I have found the book to be an excellent guide when following the protocol for clearing one's self of food allergies along with NAET accupuncture. I also recommend this book to someone who is interested in alternative medicine, or to the person who is considering accupuncture but is timid of undergoing treatment without research beforehand. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Promoting nutritional therapy as a preventative & treatment
Expertly written by biologist and naturopathic teacher Andrew Saul (who has served as a consulting specialist in natural healing for more than twenty-five years), Doctor Yourself: Natural Healing That Works is a straightforward and "non-specialist reader friendly" guide to organizing one's diet to promote health and nutrition. Promoting nutritional therapy as a preventative and treatment for many diverse ailments, and offering solid advice for adjusting one's diet plan to better live with everything from Diabetes, to PMS, to Parkinson's Disease, Doctor Yourself is a very helpful guidebook which is filled from cover to cover with gems of information that aren't usually discussed in most other nutrition books. It should also be mentioned that Andrew Saul has also developed an impressive website at DoctorYourself.com with additional information on the scientific studies behind the protocols referenced in his book and offers any interested party more than additional 4,000 references.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doctor Yourself by Dr. Andrew Saul
Having worked in the natural health care business for many years, I've read many, many books on the subject. While many of the books that I've read were quite good, I've found that even the best of these seem to be merely facts tied together with words. Dr. Saul's work, Doctor Yourself stands out in a market that has long been saturated with books of varying degrees of quality. Doctor Yourself is not only the best of the best in the marketplace, it is book with a voice. Reading Dr. Saul's book, I can clearly hear the unique voice of the author in it's pages. Dr. Saul's vast knowledge of his subject is presented with clarity, logic and humor. If I was to have one health care book in my library, it would clearly be Doctor Yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lively, Humorous, Packed with Information
DOCTOR YOURSELF is easy to read, lively, humorous and packed with practical, easy-to-follow suggestions for maintaining and improving ones health. I agree with the author's comment that folks need "education, not medication."

I highly recommend this book to others because it helps people to help themselves. In these times of rising medical costs, along with the fact that many lack health insurance, Dr. Saul's book gives hope and confidence, almost like a personal consultation with the author. It sets out dozens of well-documented nutritional protocols for treating ailments using supplements rather than prescription drugs, thereby avoiding drug expense and side effects. The book deals with with quite a few chronic and serious health conditions, as well as more common concerns. DOCTOR YOURSELF provides down to earth and well-researched information.

5-0 out of 5 stars A well written book on a complicated and ancient art
This book helped me save a horse's life. When I was far from veterinary care and had a horse stricken with colic, I was able to help him using the techniques learned in this book which augmented the veterinary acupuncture course I had taken years before. The illustrations and charts are very well done and they alone are worth the purchase price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction and reference
This book is brief enough to be used as a handy reference, yet filled with just the right amount of accurate detail to give a complete, concise picture of a subject sometimes obscured by hype.

All the basic theoretical landmarks (yin-yang, five phases, meridians, six excesses, seven emotions, eight principles) are given attention, together with a glimpse of diagnostic and treatment techniques. All the information presented on disease-patterns, diagnostic techniques, etc., is summarized into clear tables. Informative footnotes are used to clarify and expand, as well as refer the reader to both classical and modern sources.

This book is less flashy than others which purport to present Chinese Medicine, yet I believe it is one of the better introductory texts, both because of its size, and because it maintains a balance between information for students and a language accessible to interested laypersons with no prior knowledge of Acupuncture or TCM. It makes no debased claims, and presents all the information from a scholarly perspective, based on current teaching and practice models used in the People's Republic of China. The style is sober, yet engaging and easy to read.

As a student of Chinese Medicine, I encourage everybody who is interested in this subject to add this book to their reading list. It is one of the books I'm always going back to when studying from other texts.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Clear Explanation of the Traditional Chinese Medicine
This is an excellent book for people deeply interested in understanding true Traditional Oriental Medicine. The book is efficiently designed, the index is excellent, and the writing is clear. Chapter one gives an overview. Then there is a concise explanation of yin-yang theory and the Five Elements. The Organ and Channel systems are well-defined and described in enough detail to give a good comprehensive feel for their inter-relationships. The causes and course of disease is thoughtfully presented. Finally the Methods of Examination and Diagnosis are covered, again with enough detail so that a new student to traditional medicine can, in reading just this one book, have a good basic foundation for pursuing the life-long study of this most profound medicine. On the down side, Oriental Medicine is such a vast field that no one book can give more than a brief overview, or else a deep look into a single area of investigation. Also if you are looking for treatment protocols this book does not have them. And because of the length of the book (only 305 pages) the depth of detail is not great. The book is dedicated to laying out, effectively and efficiently the foundations of Traditional Chinese Medicine. And that task has been well done. ... Read more
