The most authoritative and comprehensive guide to realizing the amazing health benefits of 5-HTP

Written by one of America's leading naturopathic doctors, 5-HTP explains how this natural amino acid can safely and effectively regulate low serotonin levels, which have been linked to depression, obesity, insomnia, migraines, and anxiety.

5-HTP is also a powerful antioxidant that can protect the body from free-radical damage, reducing the risk of serious illnesses such as cancer. 5-HTP has already helped thousands, and Dr. Murray, citing extensive scientific studies and case histories, shows how this groundbreaking supplement can help you. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Quality sleep, less Anxiety
I had such a hard time falling asleep, accompanied by debilitating anxiety, until I read this book and started taking 5-HTP. My problem was so serious that I found I was sleeping with my eyes open (Ouch!) The very first night I took it, I slept like a baby. I was unable to take prescription sleep aids and anxiety drugs because of depression and other medical problems. I felt immediate relief with 5-HTP.

The scientific studies referenced in this book made be feel very comfortable in taking 5-HTP. They were written in an easily understandable format. The author basically drew a map of the path 5-HTP takes throughout the body. Well done Dr. Murray!

4-0 out of 5 stars 5-HTP is an itriguing alternative
As are most people who read this type of book, I am looking for answers about brain chemistry and mood enhancement. I suffer from depression, but have never tried a prescription drug since a brief bout with tricyclics about 15 years ago. This is a great alternative. Nicely written review of the neurological action, and what the substance does. I take 5HTP, and it works somewhat for me. I have had to take it during the daytime, as it causes extremely vivid dreams if I take it at night. I have had no other side effects yet...though I haven't been taking it long. I am always interested when a Doctor puts out a book promoting an alternative method of achieving well-being.

2-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete and full of inconsistencies
While this book presents some interesting and possibly even helpful information, Murray destroys his credibility by his glaring contradictions. For example, on page 33 he says, "5-HTP...cannot be metabolized by the liver into kynurenine." Then on page 238 he says, "...if vitamin B6 levels are low, then more 5-HTP will get converted in the liver into another substance, kynurenine."

Another troubling oversight is that Murray's mention of eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome is very brief, and is in reference only to the L-tryptophan scare of 1989. He never mentions that 5-HTP has also been linked with EMS. He also states that the manufacturing process of 5-HTP prevents any possible contamination, which simply isn't true.

I read this book hoping to find reassuring information about the safety of 5-HTP, but in light of Murray's poor research, inconsistencies and inaccuracies, it's hard to trust any of the information presented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Worry, Be Happy!
I have suffered from mild depression for years. The therapy described in the book has worked like a miracle.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just like all the others...
Nothing new here. Same old stuff you will find in any other book about 5-HTP. Dissapointed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well illustrated and lots of symptoms covered
I recently purchased both this book and "Say Good-Bye to Your Allergies" by the same author. This is the much better book - actual information on treating particular symptoms, rather than an extended apology for her NAET system of allergy treatment. The only thing that I really found more distracting than helpful was the use of medical terms when navigating to particular pressure points. I've read several books on accupressure, and this is the only one that requires a decent knowledge of 'Gray's Anatomy' to understand much of what she is saying. The illustrations go a ways to helping that, but I couldn't escape the feeling that the author was trying to make sure that readers knew she REALLY is a medically trained doctor.

Again, aside from that caveat, a good book with lots of maladies addressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Self-help book!
This is an excellent self-help book. Page "58" is very helpful to overcome immediate allergic reaction temporarily. On the very first visit, Dr. Mala taught me how to use these points. Every morning when I wake up I massage these points before I get out of bed. That gives me tremendous energy all day along. During my initial NAET treatments, I was advised to massage these points every two hours. That helped me pass my treatments without any unpleasant reactions. I love this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best Accupressure Manual
This book has been a godsend. With some experience in accupressure my wife and I have been able to use this book to address all sorts of ills. She once brought down a 104 F fever to normal in 2 hours using the pressure points in this book.

The only downside is that QA on the book is sorely lacking. Points on diagrams are missing in the narratives, the index does not include many common ailments that that are actually covered and can be found by browsing through the pressure point descriptions. There are many other editing mistakes. If this is cleaned up in the second edition, as a working manual this will be second to none.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good...
This book is so easy to follow. Anyone can follow his directions as far as the acupressure techniques. I have no knowledge of physiology or the acupressure. Overall, it is a great book. I really recommend this book. ... Read more

Dr. Seem shares his clinical experience of how and why this style of acupuncture works and presents specific protocols for use in the clinic. 5-0 out of 5 stars Every acupuncturist and bodyworker should read this book
I have every one of Dr. Seem's books. As a registered nurse with 30 years of experience and a Zen Shiatsu therapist to boot, I can recommend his books without hesitation. Every though Dr. Seem is an acupuncturist, he (whether he knows it or not) is also a master bodyworker. All his work has been proven to be beneficial not only by Dr. Seem but by others in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars an important work
Mark Seem's book is a comprehensive guide to using acupuncture in the treatment of myofascial pain. Being an acupuncturist and TCM practitioner (having done part of my training in China) I agree with Dr Seem's views on the herbalisation of acupuncture completely. Jane Austin's review I find frankly silly, and would not be surprised if it was simply a plant from a rival author intent on bringing down this books averages. This is a definite 5 star book and a must read for any acupuncturist who wants to help their patients get out of pain as quickly and efficiently as possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book
In response to the previous critique of Mark Seem by "Jane Austen," I would like to mention that Dr. Seem is an outstanding practitioner with well over 20 years of clinical experience in treating patients with acupuncture. I have used a similar approach of combining modern trigger point techniques with classical acupuncture and have had tremendous success. I am a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and have received additional training in China. I find Dr. Seem's critique of the TCM acupuncture is highly accurate. For those who are used to only the TCM methods of acupuncture, I recommend any of Mark Seems books. If you want something that is immediately useful in the clinic, start with this book. "Jane Austen's" critique of Mark Seem betrays her own clinical ignorance. His protocols are safe and effective. I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars New Perspectives Good, and Traditionally Based
As a student of 'standardized' TCM, I find Mark Seem's approach refreshing. Doctors of old examined the body with their hands, and directly percieved the subtle Qi and it's state within the body. Actually palpating the body and seeing the truth and information there, instead of intellectually deciding on a diagnosis via symptoms of the patient(accuracy questionable), is something we can all learn from....that is, the hands on approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars bringing back the importance of palpation and ashi points
Seem's book attempts to bring back the importance of ashi points and palpation in order to redress what he sees as a loss of some of the classical tenets of acupuncture. He criticizes modern TCM acupuncture for adhearing to a system of static point location based the skeletal system rather than the practicioner's sense of touch. His references include meridian style acupuncturists, Kiiko Matsumoto, and Travell's work with trigger points and somato-visceral relationships. It is written in a conscise manner, with a definite bias. It is probably a good read for someone who has already studied the TCM literature. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Belongs on every herb user's shelf!
I am quite impressed with this book. The amount of information that Duke has crammed into this slim volume is unbelievable. The herb profiles contain everything you would want to know about an herb before using it. The safety rating is such a great tool. I wonder why Duke is the first herbalist to think of it (at least I think he's the first. Never seen it in any other herbal). In this collection of herbs, there are North, South and Central American plants as well as European and Asian ones. There's a nice therapeutic index too, listing what herbs are good for which conditions. Duke has a great writing style. It reflects his incredible knowledge, sense of humor and just plain common sense. Excellent book! If I could only have 3 herb books, this would be one of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed Medical Herbal
Dr. Duke's book, The Green Pharmacy Herbal Handbook, contains accurate, no-nonsense information on many of the medically useful herbal preparations. His background in botany, provides excellent advise on uses and possible dangers.

For those herbs he includes there are lists of optimum dosages and warnings of possible contra-indications or dangers involved.

Over 180 herbs are described, in a quick to use format.

Even though it covers a small number of the herbs available for use, the ones he includes are important in treating a range of conditions.

I found it quite readable even for browsing in an evening, and emminently useful when faced with a sudden onset of a medical problem of the sort most treatable with herbs. ... Read more

I was very disappointed with this book. I felt like is was more like a sales brochure than a book. Their were too few testimonials and they were not specific. This book is a great tool to introduce new people to TAHITIAN NONI Juice. It gives you great research and detailed information for different ailments that TAHITIAN NONI Juice can help. It also gives people instructions on how to get the best results from the juice as well. All and all a great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Noni Resource Available!
This is one of the very best resources I have found to really explain why and how Tahitian Noni Juice works! Dr. Solomon also answers the first question everyone asks: How much should I drink? Well, he usually answers: "The amount that works!" But, in this book, he gives general guideline to help individuals derive the greatest benefit from Tahitian Noni Juice! All of the information presented in this book is based on his extensive research and surveys of over 10,000 individuals who drink Tahitian Noni Juice for a variety of health challenges. Now, when I share the miracle of Tahitian Noni Juice with someone, I also share this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Why Noni and for what?
I would have to agree with the previous review that this is a great
companion (follow-up -- read the other one first) to Solomon's other
book on Noni. I dont' take Noni for any specific "ailment".
I prefer to think of it as preventative care....

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cream of the Crop
If I had to pick just one book on Tahitian Noni juice it would have to be this one! It is a must for customers and distributors alike. The book answers to the most frequently asked question: "How much do I take for this or that condition". Dr. Solomon's answers are based on his extensive survey of doctors and people who received positive results by drinking Tahitian Noni juice. He covers over 19 major health conditions people suffer from and includes several testimonials.

Also included in this book are results of some of the latest Cancer studies performed by Dr. Mian-Ying Wang at the University of Illinois College at Rockford.

5-0 out of 5 stars I lovethe premiseof this book!!!
The way that Whisenant has spelled out the relationship between the myths and the meridians is brilliant and illuminating!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressive with a different protocol.
Psychological Kinesiology espouses concepts that can be monumental in their impact. In 1998,I contracted idiopathic thrombocytopenic pupura(ITP).This disease is considered fatal unless you have your spleen removed, undergo bone marrow transplants and take steroids the rest of your life. I refused to do this as the treatment is only 50% effective and does not correct the cause(idiopathic).I went to a practioner that used the pricnciples outlined in Psychological Kinesiology who found that I had a dysfunctional assumption. This condition is discussed and explained in the book. Using these concepts, I am now cured of ITP and am still well after two years. Did not have a splenectomy, etc. Anyone who reads this treatise with an open mind will have a new explanation of how and why we get sick and get well.If you are interested in your true health status, this is a must. It literally saved my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of three books that have impacted me in a profound way.
Never in my life had I thought that I stored within my body information, even commands that would dictate themes or courses in my life. So there has to be something that integrates the whole body. Hence, I had to trust mybody to know what would be best for it in my transformation and evolution. What "I" am is not just the thoughts, but my core beliefs as theyare registered in the tissues and energy systems of my being. Thisunderstanding launched my path to self-observation, and I have been doingthis for eight years. I am now sensitively aware that diet, toxins, exercise, thoughts, relationships, activities of work and recreation allimpinge on the outcome of my life through my body and its communicationpathways as they are clearly explained in this book.

As Dr. Whisenantelucidates, if one can accept responsibility for the entire outcome ofone's life from a non-judgmental stance, one can use the technology ofPsychological Kinesiology to move into a position of directing life insteadof passively suffering from it. One can realize that dysfunctionalassumptions are neither good nor bad.

I am not to blame if Iunknowingly precipitate misfortune and I am not to be lauded if Iunknowingly attract a windfall. But if I understand the intimate energeticarchitecture involved, these subtle ebbs and flows can be utilized tomanifest the best experience.

The author has stated that: "We don'tthink with the brain; we think with the body which happens to include thebrain." This point was driven home to me early on when a specificexample that was used in the book applied directly to me.Theinstructional example involved having two flat tires in one month on brandnew tires. And it actually happened to me. I could have swiftly writtenthis off to a stroke of bad luck, but by looking deeper into the causativenetwork, I was able to make changes in my life that went significantlybeyond the functioning of my vehicle.

This book allowed me to have a muchdeeper understanding of methodology of applied kinesiology. One can usethis material as healer to work on others and one can also use thesemethods to work on oneself.Furthermore, one can even use thisunderstanding as a guide in the selection of other health and lifeenhancement practitioners.

Don't pass up this opportunity to have thesetools and this understanding to take control of and enhance your life.

1-0 out of 5 stars Incomprehensible
I do not have a training in kinesiology but did not realise that I needed to have one to make any sense of this book.I do have a good understanding of energy and meridian therapies in general, especially acupuncture.

To my mind this book was a casual, sweeping, ill constructed overview of whatmay have been a marvelous new meidian medicine field. It has gaping holesin its subject matter so that without professional training it made nosense at all.It borrowed heavily from other disciplines - no crime there-but offered them up unquestioned and crude. For example a few, random yogaexercises, a smattering of Rechian type psychology, a crude analysis ofpersonality types. All of which would be far better learned in bookswritten by people truly knowledable in their field.

I so wanted this bookto help me.I need the help it claimed to offer. But it was quiteuseless.I'm only glad that Amazon accepts returns - although I spent afair bit on airmail postage to the UK and back I was still able to minimisea big downside.

One of the very poorest books I have bought in any ofthese related topics and with a huge price tag!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspires Creativity and Pushes the Clinical Envelope
Dr. Whisenant's book, Psychological Kinesiology: Changing the Body's Beliefs, offers an integration of western and eastern philosophical paradigms and clinical protocols. His lively story telling is illuminating for the lay and professional reader. When used as a resource for university classes, the classes become animated as students engage in discourse, debate, and consideration of theory and clinical practice.Dr. Whisenant's book is an excellent reference for those clinicians and clients who choose to do the work of therapy within a mind-body-spirit orientation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Guide to Natural Remedies for Women
After years of experiencing excruciating periods, I was diagnosed with endometriosis. I have been searching for months to find natural alternatives to hormone therapy and another laparascopy. I found it in this book. It contains more information on endometriosis than any other resource I have looked through. It also provides thorough dietary suggestions and nutritional supplements. It offers an alternative to the more extreme therapies.

While I was looking to this book for a specific condition, it also contains a wealth of information on the various ailments that women suffer from, as well as suggestions for women's overall health.

I highly reccommend it to anyone looking to feel better, naturally.

If you're tired of the side-effects of chemical drugs you'll find plenty of sound advice and alternative therapies backed up by scrupulous research. Ed.)(CAM) by Cheng Xinnong. I would also like to recommend - but not required - Foundations in Chinese Acupuncture (Rev. Ed.) by Ellis, Wiseman and Boss. This book is great for channel theory and has excellent detail throughout.

For Everyone else:
The above also applies to everyone else but mostly to TCM students. In review of Giovanni's book I must say that from a Western Medical science point of view it was easier to understand than "The Web" and I found that it presented the material in a logical systematic fashion with better and more complete explanations. It is better to start with this book, than with some of the others because once you have a good background with this one, you can understand the different wording in the other books (CAM, Web, etc.). Overall written well and highly recommended.

Five Stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
A very usefull book for students of TCM. Should be read by any serious student who starts his journey to discover the TCM.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dicey CA State Board Book
Maciocia's work has been quite influential in the U.S. despite the fact that some of his information is from the classics, while other parts are his own creation. He does not always differentiate between the two, nor does he always cite his sources.

For example, the idea that the outer back shu points are effective for the treatment of emotions... not from the Classic sources, according to Philippe Sionneau. So where did it come from? Who made it up?

However, we still have to know everything in his books for the CA state board. His zang-fu herbalized-style point functions, 5 phase type, three jiao patterns, etc. are unique to this book.

In its defense, it does have a lot of important basic info, and it's written by a native English speaker... but it's a vastly different look at Chinese Medicine from say The Practical Dictionary of Chinese Medicine by Nigel Wiseman.

Good start for the new student... but neither the last word, nor infallible.

1-0 out of 5 stars Adequate
Gives an adequate overview of the basic concepts in chinese medicine, but is sorely lacking in many, many others. What it lacks, as does much of the information originating from communist China, are the Taoist roots of the medicine which have a very tangible impact on its practice (especially the psychospiritual elements) - something that is sorely lacking from the modern TCM iteration of Chinese medicine. Its understanding of the production of Qi and Xue is incomplete, which limits its usefulness clinically as well. Much more information from the classics should be included in this text to warrent its name as a 'foundational' text. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A practical guide & other stuff
This book gives very good guidelines and clear, precise instructions that will broaden the scope of treatment of any inquisitive TCM practitioner and/or student. Ilkay Chirali does an excellent job in presenting interesting applications of the cups, many of which will be totally new for a lot of people.

The book contains many clear pictures of cups, their different forms of application (ten methods of cupping, wow!), and also pictures that can help the practitioner explain to the patient the effects of the treatment. The section on treatment of specific conditions is very illustrative, and will be welcome by practitioners who are not afraid to try new things.

There are, however, a couple of weak spots. I acknowledge the effort of Mr. Chirali in researching and providing information on the background of cupping, but I would have liked to see more of that from the Chinese side. Most of the information in the first chapter dwells on cupping in the west. This material, although interesting, may not entirely be within the scope of the book (not at such length, anyway, in my opinion), and there are no quotes from Chinese books and only very little historical information on the development of cupping in the East. I would also have liked the author to discuss at length the Chinese theories on the workings of the cups, as well as to tie it in with the theories of chinese physiology TCM students are more familiar with.

There is a section on integrating cupping with other therapies, such as reflexology, aromatherapy, chiropractic, and so on. Although I agree that the benefits of cupping can very easily be extended to these other modalities of treatment, it also falls outside of the scope of a book entitled "Traditional Chinese Medicine Cupping Therapy". This information might well broaden the potential readership of the book in general, but to the acupuncture student (such as myself) these pages are not exactly useful.

It shines through the text that the author knows and loves his subject, with which he has had contact since he was very young. It is, all in all, a great, practical book, and I hope many practitioners will read it and add its contents to their treatment repertoires.

Cupping Therapy is only one of the techniques amongst hundreds if not thousands offered today by the complementary/alternative practitioner. This book reflects my own research, experience and knowledge that I have gained over the past 15 years both as a practitioner and as a teacher of cupping therapy. 'Cupping Therapy -Traditional Chinese Medicine' title, is designed to assist both the students and the practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine and various other tactile therapists such as Massage, Aromatherapy, Chiropractic, Osteopathy, Kinesiology, Alexander Technique, Shiatsu, Reflexology, Polarity and Physiotherapy. I am privileged to be the first TCM practitioner/teacher to put together this unique and comprehensive Cupping Therapy manual. My ultimate aim is to help colleges and schools to include cupping therapy as part of their treatment programme or educational syllabus. While encouraging and promoting the practical use in clinics by way of structured seminars and workshops around the world. I would also like to hear your experiences and comments regarding cupping therapy, particularly on the section 1/7 Ten methods of Cupping. More people should know about this therapy - maybe this book will help. My wife's family used it in Vietnam, I experienced it during acupuncture treatment, and it turns out my father's nanny used it in Paris in the 30's! Mr. Chiraldi's 'History Of Cupping' section reveals its tradition reaching back to ancient Egypt or beyond and through all cultures.

Book Description

The understanding and treatment of infectious and other externally-contracted diseases has been a central concern of Chinese medicine for millennia. Especially during the past few centuries, the concepts and treatment approaches of the warm disease school have percolated throughout Chinese medical thought. Modern practitioners apply them in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of serious illnesses, including many which are common in the West, such as auto-immune disorders.

Warm Diseases: A Clinical Guide provides an in-depth, clinically oriented approach to this important subject. The introductory chapters tell the compelling story of how traditional Chinese physicians, primarily from the seventeenth through the nineteenth centuries, developed the theories and concepts of warm disease in response to the health crises of their time, which included a number of epidemics. The evolution of their approach to etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment, discussed in this volume, demonstrates how traditional medicine has evolved to meet contemporary needs.

The second part of the book describes the various types of warm disease from a clinical perspective. Here the author discusses the manifestations, pathogenesis, treatment principles, and formulas for each type. Case histories show how theory is actually applied in the clinic. A variety of approaches is presented, which avoids the tendency to portray traditional Chinese medicine as an unchanging, monolithic entity. Over time, these differences have led to much creative foment and improvement in the efficacy of treatment. The author also addresses aspects of dosage and preparation that are generally omitted from standard textbooks. This part of the book will be particularly welcome to practitioners, who will find it useful in the clinic.

Rounding out the volume is an extensive bibliography of original source materials, supplemental case histories and materia medica, and detailed indexes which provide access to every aspect of this subject. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gift
With this volume, Dr. G. Liu brings together a wealth of clinical experience and understanding. His approach to an important, yet often under-exlpored subject is cohesive, well integrated and quite accessible to its readers, and as such, fills a long empty gap in the English language volumes on Traditional Chinese Medicine.

As the title states, this is truly a "clinical guide". It not only provides a thorough discussion of the history and concept (including etiology, differentiation, and treatment)of "warm diseases", but goes on to bring the material to life with numerous clinical examples. The examples provide anchors for the various aspects of warm diseases that each represents, and then take the reader through the process of developing a rational treatment approach based on the understanding of that particular condition.

Dr. Liu's extensive knowledge of Chinese Herbal Medicine is also quite evident as he discusses the various herbal approaches to treatment of different warm diseases. Despite the complexity of Chinese Herbal Medicine, Dr. Liu presents this information in a style which is, at the same time, informative and accessible to the reader. He provides the reader with information on both individual herbs, as well as specific formulas. Thus, he helps the reader on the path to working to understand and adjust formulas, based on the specific, individual needs of their patients.

His integration of theory, and diagnostic understanding, with treatment implementation makes this volume invaluable to both students and practioners alike. I strongly recommend this as a book to keep on your shelf, as it is one to which you will frequently return. I believe that we owe Dr. Liu a debt of gratitude for sharing himself, his knowledge, and his clinical experiences with us in his gift of "Warm Diseases: A Clinical Guide".

5-0 out of 5 stars Sets the standard for warm diseases
Liu's Warm Diseases, A Clinical Guide is exactly that. Its detailed, systematic presentation takes the reader through the historical development, theory, and practical application of warm diseases theory. Liu's style is consistently logical and detail-oriented, without overwhelming the reader with unnecessary information. Liu introduces and illustrates the use of the major herbal prescriptions of the warm disease school through representative case histories, and he explains how to modify the prescriptions appropriately based on the symptoms and pattern variations of the individual patient.

Liu includes in his discussions the concepts of "lurking" or "latent" warm diseases, an important area of theory regarding infectious diseases which become lodged in the interior, sometimes chronically, without manifestations or with different manifestations from the more typical acute warm diseases. Liu's book is so far the best source of information on this subject in English.

The appendices include a supplemental materia medica, most of whose entries will be already be known to the well-informed practitioner, and additional case studies.

Warm Diseases, A Clinical Guide would make an excellent classroom textbook, and it is certainly well worth reading for professionals who were trained in the United States, where warm diseases theory is still relatively unknown. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
The best book available for anyone desiring to treat depression naturally.

5-0 out of 5 stars Before you take prozac
Forget about "touchy feely" talk about herbal remedies. If you're a skeptic, this book will change your mind about St. John's Wort and what BRAND you buy. Covers a staggering number of therapies in great detail: some you probably know like electric shock therapy, Prozac and cognitive therapy. Other lesser known therapies include Omega-3, 5-HTP, SAM-e, and Tyrosine. The author did his homework. Citing numerous clinical trials, studies, and on-line news groups, I found this reading a bit overwhelming or too dry at times, but only because of the author's thorough investigation. All in all, it was well worth it. Makes your doctors sit up and take notes when you talk about how YOU want to treat your depression. (that alone is worth it). An excellent reference that grows with you as your treatment for depression evolves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Both in-depth and easy to understand
This book covers everything, and I mean everything in the realm of non-drug and non-electroshock therapies for depression. Each chapter goes into great detail both on background and practical application for each therapy, whether it's nutritional supplements, cognitive therapy, bodywork, or medical causes and their treatments. Even if you want to continue with drug therapy, this book is useful for the "what next?" or "what can I do in addition?" stages. It's also well-written, with very human flashes of humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review of alternatives for treating depression.
This book covers many alternatives to treating depression, most of which employ readily obtainable vitamins and herbs, or feature cognitive or exercise programs. The author urges readers to rate the options as they read each chapter, and to return to those that appeared promising. Many treatments are accompanied by bullet lists to help readers assess their applicability to their present situation. While the author does not go into very much depth, he does help readers sort through options and determine plans, as well as locate additional material for each alternative ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars OK for a textbook
This is quite an informative book on a number of topics, from drug addiction to heart disease to sexuality. My only complaint is the emphasis placed on "spirituality" which seems to be another word for religion. The writer seems to be implying that anyone who is not religious cannot be "healthy," without offering any other spiritual alternatives for those who do not subscribe to religion. I wish the same amount of space had been devoted to meditation as is spent on the "power of prayer." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nourishing Practitioners by Nourishing Destiny
Lonny Jarrett is one of the few authors who provides a complete analysis of the five elements that can be applied to everyday practice. I found as I read his book, which I did several times, various patients came to mind (others were not so clear...). Patients also related to the descriptions of the five elements as it affected their lives. The approach provided me with the extra information I needed to better treat an energy imbalance, rather than symptoms alone. The way Lonny combines the things we learn, the way we interpret the world, and the make up we bring to it, was practical and applicable. He seems to be more from the Worsley school with its emphasis on the psychological rather than the cosmological school. If more books like Lonny's come to print, I believe Western Chinese Medicine will really have come of age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb, unusual, and thought-provoking
This book is genuinely eye-opening. It is an advanced text focusing on five-phase acupuncture models. It discusses various phase types, and also utilizes case studies to clarify his perspective. It is highly psycho-emotionally oriented, and therefore useful to add to the more standard library of acupuncturists. Along with Jeremy Ross' book, I use this book most frequently. ... Read more

Although I've only taken one strain/counterstrain course (for the extremities) I use this text frequently in the clinic. Many times the techniques from this book have helped when other things haven't worked. Definitely worth checking this one out.
