4-0 out of 5 stars Bulkiness prevents it from being where I need it most
Good book. Its bulkiness prevents it from being available where I need it, in the hospital, in the OR etc..
I guess it could easily be printed in handbook format, or better yet, become available in PDA format. That would make it much more practical in my view.

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy Anesthesiologist
I used this book continuously throughout my residency. It is a very useful tool for perioperative management of patients. I still reference it during practice for those cases that I do not do routinely. It is an excellent reference.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ehh... Ok
I have been an anesthesiologist for over 15 years... and I would like to say that I don't believe that this book accurately describes the procedures taken in surgery.

4-0 out of 5 stars an overly comprehensive review
I do agree that this textbook is a very well-done, well written book with a lot of value for anesthesiologists. However, as a tool for oral board study it is actually a bit too comprehensive and inclusive. Take my word for it, during your oral board exam you are not going to be asked about histologic changes in the bronchial mucosa of the asthmatic or the synthetic pathway of catecholamines. The person studying for the oral anesthesiology board doesn't have time to waste learning material that he or she doesn't need to know. I recommend instead Clinical Cases in Anesthesia by Reed. Same format, much more focused on the material that the anesthesiologist must know for the oral exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kaplan Review
I think this book is wonderful. It is probably the best source for information on anesthesia management of congenital heart diseases, perioperative management of ischemia and ventricular failure. It is a 1999 edition, so there are a few points which need to be updated in view of recent advances in both drugs and surgical procedures, but I would still recommend this book to all the prospective cardiac anesthesiologists.

5-0 out of 5 stars The standard work in this field.
The interesting thing about this book is that it is read by everyone in the field of cardiac anesthesia. When discussing a subject, many people refer to what is written in this book, so you really need it! The book is easy to use because of the clear language and the modest amount of information on a subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars I want to know the price of new edition of this book.
Please let me know about the availability of the fourth editionof kaplan book in India and the price.

Book Description

I. Physiology & Pharmacology of the Normal Child

This chapter will review the normal physiology of all the major organ systems with an emphasis on factors that affect the administration of anesthesia and differences from adults. Temperature control will be covered in this chapter.

This chapter will also review basic pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes and emphasize differences from adults.

II. Important Pediatric Diseases

This chapter will be divided into the major organ systems and cover the more common and important pediatric diseases that are important for anesthesiologists. Examples:

Pulmonary: asthma, cystic fibrosis, upper respiratory tract infection, laryngomalacia, etc.

Cardiac: evaluation of murmurs, cyanotic congenital heart disease, acyanotic CHD, common pediatric arrhythmias, etc.

Renal: chronic renal failure, child with a transplanted kidney, etc.CNS: seizures, brain tumors, cerebral palsy, mental retardation, etc.

Heme/Onc: anemia, leukemia, chemotherapy, mediastinal mass, hemophilia, sickle cell disease, etc.

Trauma: CNS, truncal, limb, etc.

Airway syndromes: Treacher-Collins, Goldenhars, cystic hygroma, etc.

Miscellaneous: Trisomy 21, epidermolysis bullosa, etc.

III. Preoperative Considerations

This chapter will discuss principles of premedication, psychological preparation, parents in the OR, appropriate preoperative labs, & principles of preoperative fasting.

IV. Intraoperative Monitoring & Management

This chapter will discuss monitors, airway equipment, and induction & maintenance of general anesthesia.

V. Postoperative Concerns

This chapter will discuss routine care and monitoring of pediatric patients postoperatively. It will include controversies about discharge criteria, postoperative pain management, and common complications such as nausea/vomiting and stridor.

VI. Specialty Anesthesia

This chapter will include specifics about managing common pediatric surgeries. It will be organized into subspecialty areas that will include: ENT, Cardiac, Ophtho, Ortho, Thoracic, Abdominal, Neonatal emergencies, Dentistry, Urology, Neurosurgery, Transplants, Radiological procedures, Radiation therapy, Endoscopy, and Sedation for painful procedures.

VII. Critical Care

This chapter will introduce the resident to the essentials of pediatric critical care. Since the ABA does not require too much knowledge in this area, this chapter will not be very detailed, but will include principles of resuscitation (PALS & NALS).

VIII. Acute & Chronic Pain Management

This chapter will briefly review principles of acute and chronic pain management in children.

Case Studies

At the end of each chapter there will be one to three case studies that are related to the chapter content. These can be contained within the gray boxes, or the gray boxes can be reserved for more traditional lists, or tables. Each case study will consist of a case and several questions to be answered about the case. The answers can either be listed directly below the questions, or preferably, further down so the reader can formulate their own answer first. The case study will ideally describe a controversial issue.

Example of case study from the Postoperative Concerns chapter:

A 3-month-old child presents for inguinal hernia repair. The child was born at 25 weeks gestation, and was ventilated for the first three weeks of life. Ongoing medical problems include anemia, and chronic lung disease of infancy.

Question 1. What are the common medical problems in former premature infants?

Question 2. What is the safe level of hemoglobin prior to anesthetizing this infant?

Question 3. What's the safest method of anesthesia for this infant?

Question 4. What criteria should be used to safely discharge this infant home following surgery?

Etc. ... Read more

I am a second year veterinary student. My roommate bought the standard anestesia text-Lumb and Jones and I bought Muir. We both ended up using Muir because it is much more comprehensive at this level then Lumb and Jones (which is an excellent reference but a bit overwhelming for an introductory anesthesia course). 5-0 out of 5 stars Knowledge About Cerebrospinal Fluid Fistula
We have got the textbook and we thought that the book our main anesthesiology resource.

Recently we have a case of cerebrospinal fluid-cutaneous fistula following spinal anesthesia used for indirect inguinal hernia repair. But we couldn't see any comment in the textbook about the management of cerebrospinal fluid fistula from inthratecal space to skin due to postdural puncture for purpose of spinal (intrathecal) anesthesia.

Cutaneous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) fistula are known to occur rarely under spinal puncture during spinal anesthesia, and CSF leaks via that fistula. This complication is often self-limiting but sometimes needed some treatment procedures such as intravenous fluid restruction, patient prone position, strecth dressing of wound, epidural injection of autologous blood patche or fibrin glue, or uncommonly use of CSF drainage system.

We think that if this complication and its' management is included in new edition of the textbook it will be better.

With our regards,
