5-0 out of 5 stars Really helpful clinical guide
The pocket size and light weight make this a great addition for reference while at your nursing clinicals. Contains synopses of disease process, typical tests for diagnosis, and basic nursing assessments and interventions. I am doing a clinical nursing internship this summer and needed something compact for my briefcase, yet containing good info to refresh me on the diseases and illnesses I was encountering in my patients. This book fills the bill. My prof loved it too. The spiral binding is nice rather than a glued binding, but needs a bit of redesign as the back cover falls off. I just sewed up the openings with some fishing line to solve that problem. Highly recommended addition to your working library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Correction of the description synopsis about the book
You have described an advanced practice nursing book under the heading of the text "Focus on Pathophysiology". This textbook is based on 4 previous editions of Pathophysiology: Adaptations and Alterations in Function. It has been carefully revised and updated. The text can be used in nursing schools, allied health courses, including occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy. It also can be used in Advanced Practice Nursing courses. It provides a description of current concepts of disease processes in order for the reader to understand the effects of disease on the human body. It details basic concepts, bodily defense mechanisms, and all of the major body systems. There are some new learning tools including a glossary of key terms, end of unit appendices, etc. which make the book more user friendly. I hope that you will change your description synopsis. Thank you, BArbara Bullock ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best review book I used!!!
This was the best review book I used for the NCLEX last year. I passed the first time. Easy to read and understand even new material. The questions were just like the ones on the state exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes the Intimidation Away for Medical Beginners
Very few books actually take the time to hold your hand without simultaenously patronizing you. One might see this text as a doorway to the entrance of medical care. I am a newly trained Navy Hospital Corpsman (military medic), and right out of training, I am already expected to be familiar with patient Sickcall procedures and writing SOAP notes. This book greatly helped me in taking the patient's basic history/exam and provides common assessments to choose from. It also reinforces it's contents with small quizzes after every chapter. Numerous pictures and examining techniques are also clear and concise. Keep in mind, however, that it's "user-friendly" demeanor makes everything simple and to the point; I've learned that nothing in the medical field is simple. For more information on disorders, diseases, or illness, I suggest using traditional medical references, like Mosby's. All in all, I commend this book's ability to boost a medical practitioner with little experience up to one of professional competence and skill. And, it's fun! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple down to earth
Compared to Bates' book I find this one more easier to read and understand. Has more pictures and more guidance what to look for at half price. Bates' may have similar information but this book better itemize it. book has more pages but pages are less dense.every chapter starts with short anatomy and than examination, what to ask and why and what to examine, Normal range of findings and abnormal findings. Bates' has also abnormal findings slightly less examples but for normal findings it does not say what is normal or what should be normal. anyway I liked both of them but I would get this book first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Physical Examination and Health Assessment
For anyone who needs to understand how to perform a physical examination and a health assessment on a client this is the book for you!!!! The text is well written, easy to understand and helpful in allowing you, the student to become efficient in P.E. ... chech this text out!!!!! MB

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource for Advance Practice Nurses
This is the best Physical Assessment book since Bates. I would recommend this book to all Nurse Practitioners. It is definitely an asset, and a wonderful source of current information. It also suggests implications for the culturally diversed patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent nursing text that will enhance my career needs!
I am a registered nurse with an Associates Degree in Nursing. I am currently enrolled at Governors State University with the goal of obtaining a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. I am presently taking a course in Health Assessment and the required textbook is Mosby's 2nd edition of Health and Physical Assessment. Within two weeks of the beginning of the course; a classmate and I decided the text was not thorough enough for our present level as nursing students with several years of nursing experience. We felt we needed a textbook which would enable us to enhance the skills we already possess and delve into the rationale for the procedures we have never had the opportunity to perform; but expect to in our future careers as Nurse Practicioners. Therefore we went to Rush University Bookstore today and were amazed at the variety of texts on this subject. We chose Physical Examination and Health Assessment by Carolyn Jarvis because of the marvelous text layout which seemed to have been prepared especially for nurses in our situation. Each chapter not only discusses the topic, but it explains the rationales of each assessment and expounds upon each subject and fully explains how to assess each system in depth. As an African American woman I can truly appreciate the time and effort that was taken to provide accurate, extensive information on the assessment of hair, skin, and nails of non-white patients. The transcultural highlights are excellent. The information reguarding the assessment of tatoos is also an excellent addition to current nursing textbooks because of its prevalence in our society. The section in each chapter on abnormal findings provides nursing students with a wonderful outlet to improve critical thinking skills. The need for the normal finding explanations cannot be overstated due to the focus of preventive nursing in this age. The illustrations in the text leave no doubt as to the appearance of certain primary lesions that have not been visualized in the clinical setting. The extent of information on labs performed in the nutritional assessment leave no stone unturned in evaluation of this critical area. The area on assessment of the head and neck provides a wealth of information on the complete assessment of the underlying structures through palpation of the overlying skin surfaces. I also admire the explanations included on the proper usage of the otoscope, opthalmoscope and tuning fork. The added Laboratory Manual and Pocket Companion are invaluable resources. I truly enjoyed learning about the author in the synopsis in the Pocket Companion. Her experience in a variety of areas were an added incentive for my purchase. Every area of the textbook was thoroughly used for providing invaluable information. Even the front inside cover gives commonly used translations from English to Spanish for patients nurses can no longer afford to ignore in any setting. The back inside cover acknowledges the importance of universal precautions in our current society. My classmate and I were very impressed also with the area on vital signs which expounded on the multiple reasons for inaccurate and erroneous blood pressure readings. How often have these problems affected the recorded vital signs? I could continue, but suffice it to say that this textbook will have a special place in my heart as well as on my desk for the remainder of my career. I sincerely thank the author, her contributors, and the publisher for such an innovative and pertinent text that will survive into the next millenium. BRAVO! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nursing Student Reviews Book
I agree that this is a great book. It really helps me with my care plans and is easy to use. The only reason it only got 4 stars is that I HAVE seen more user friendly diagnosis books for beginning students, but for that same reason I can see this book helping me in my advanced studies down the road.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Applications of Nursing Diagnosis
This textbook on nursing diagnosis is an indispensible guide in creating the nursing diagnosis. It is well organized and easy to read. The diagnoses are grouped according to the 11 functional health patterns. Interventions are simple and broken down into easy to apply format. Additionally, interventions are listed for adults, women, psychiatric, gerontic, and for the home health care situation making this text useful in a number of clinical situations. Rationales are included with each intervention saving precious time for the nursing student writing nursing process papers. This text does not link medical diagnosis with nusing diagnosis which may make it difficult to use for some students. I, and my fellow nursing students, have found this text to be an indespensible guide in developing our nursing diagnoses. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Diagnostic Tests by SPRINGHOUSE
This is an excellent reference guide on the rationale and
specific details of diagnostic medical tests both simple and
complex. The authors provide an extensive forward, a discussion
of collection techniques and precautions. For instance, the
bone marrow aspiration and biopsy is a moderately complicated
procedure aimed at diagnosing leukemias, granulomas, pernicious
anemia, primary and metastatic tumors, the staging of Hodgkin's
disease and evaluation of chemotherapy effectiveness. The
procedure is contraindicated in patients with severe bleeding
disorders. Yellow marrow contains fat cells and connective
tissue; whereas, red marrow contains hematopoiec cells, fat cells
and connective tissue. A detailed Histology of the bone marrow
specimen may detect myelofibrosis, granulomas, lymphomas or
cancer. A hemotology blood and bone marrow report is generated
by the blood laboratory. It shows details of the cell type
and applicable levels of myeloblasts, promyelocytes, myelocytes, metamyelocytes, polymorphs, eosinophils, basophils, lymphocytes,
monocytes, plasma cells, pronormoblasts, basophilic normoblasts,
polychrom-Normoblasts, Orthochrom. Normoblasts and Reticulum
cellular structures. A diagnostician's detailed interpretation
usually follows the detailed description of cellular types.
The SPRINGHOUSE work explains the various procedures and
benefits of doing a plethora of diagnostic tests. This work
is invaluable in helping the patient understand the procedure
and its implications, benefits and contraindications. The
information content in this book can help the patient
immeasurably in formulating intelligent questions to pose
to the medical provider on a continuing basis. This book is
worth the price for all of the above reasons. It is a worthy
addition to any personal medical reference library. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Picky Book buyer loves it!!
I felt that this was the most complete and EASY to use Lab book for nursing students, such as I. It even suggests what abnormals can mean clinically.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best
Honestly, I don't give many books 5 stars, nor do I give many glowing reviews, but Mosby really did an outstanding job putting this book together. The format is friendly, the data is accurate, and the tests are all relevant in hospital or clinical settings. Great book and an invaluable reference for nurses and laboratorians alike!

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick and Handy Reference
This is a reference we use on our psych unit because it provides information in a quick and easy-to-use format for nurses who do not deal with medical issues on a regular basis. It has logical cross references and recommendations for further investigation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST own!
I'm a 6th year medical student and I was looking for a book that could give me a quick, easy, yet complete method of evaluating laboratory exams right on the spot. With this book I got that and much, much more. Right from the book's size and weight to the complete and easy to read information, this book is done just right (it even comes with a waterproof cover to prevent the book from being easily damaged). It includes basic stuff like blood test and urinalysis to more advanced stuff including arthroscopy and mediastinoscopy. The book has it all. For each entry you get: type of test, normal findings (includes values), test explanation and related physiology, interfering factors, procedure and patient care, abnormal findings (lists the diseases that must be suspected); and in the cases that apply gives contraindications, and home care considerations. It has your basic index, plus a list of tests by type (eg. urine tests) and another list of tests by body system (eg. nervous system). All in all, the decision is a no-brainer, this book is a MUST for any medical student or physician. A 5-star rating is an understatement. Highly recommended! ... Read more
