Book Description

"The first edition of Qualitative Communication Research Methods set a high standard for accessibility, thoroughness, and depth. The second edition takes that standard even higher. Lindlof and Taylor have written a complete text that addresses the theory and technique of qualitative research across a breadth of approaches with substantive and illuminating examples drawn from a variety of topical areas. The writing is exemplary—engaging, careful and dead on. The authors address the problems and controversies of research without bogging down in indecision or glossing to happy endings. The pedagogy is solid. This is a book for the practitioner and the student. It is a "go to" text."

--James Anderson, University of Utah

"I used the first edition of this book in my graduate qualitative methods class, and I look forward to using the second edition this fall. The changes are excellent. The text is even more readable and comprehensive, it has been up-dated, and includes all the topics pertinent to understanding and doing Communication qualitative research. The new edition contains exercises and many examples and exemplars, a well as new chapters on computer mediated qualitative research and on authoring and writing."

--Carolyn Ellis, University of South Florida

The Second Edition of Qualitative Communication Research Methods builds on the strengths of the first edition, taking readers through every step of the qualitative research process -- from the research idea to the finished report. Unique for its coverage of the entire discipline of Communication, this text now includes a new chapter on computer-mediated communication (identities, relationships, and communities) as well as fully updated and expanded key topics including: developing research questions, coding data, using computers in analysis, and transcription. Processes covered in the text include interviewing, writing field notes, and creating ethical relationships with participants.

Features:

  • In-depth discussion of research methods, designs, types of analysis, and writing strategies
  • Student exercises and helpful samples of field research texts and materials
  • Solutions to issues and problems of qualitative communication research
  • Progressive approach to qualitative research and its contribution to the knowledge of rapidly changing technological cultures
  • Examination of how new directions in critical and interpretive theory are influencing research practice in Communication.

Qualitative Communication Research Methods, Second Edition, provides students with numerous examples of work in the field illustrating how studies are designed, carried out, written, evaluated, and applied to theory. This interesting and accessible text provides a rewarding and challenging introduction to qualitative methodology.

Book Description

This rare "inside" account of hearing with a cochlear implant, the first effective artificial sensory organ, is a moving story about a deaf woman's journey through deafness and into hearing. Essential for understanding both deafness and the strange experience of hearing with a cochlear implant. With a foreword by John K. Niparko M.D., Professor of Otolaryngology, Director of The Listening Center at Johns Hopkins. Oliver Sacks M.D., author of Seeing Voices says: "Those of us who are hearing tend to take the world of sound for granted. We cannot imagine or recollect hearing sound for the first time, for this early experience is lost in infancy. But it is exactly this - the experience of sound as revelation, that Beverly Biderman evokes. Wired for Sound is a unique personal account, an adventure (sometimes delightful, sometimes terrifying, often funny and poignant) into a new world of sound, acquired through a cochlear implant after 30 years of deafness." Includes the voices of a wide range of deaf people talking about their deafness, and a balanced exploration of the explosive issues of the Deaf culture's opposition to cochlear implants.

Detailed appendix includes a comprehensive listing of over 75 international resources on deafness and cochlear implants, plus an index, an annotated recommended reading list, and over 100 endnotes documenting current research.

A must read for anyone wanting to know more about the experience of deafness, and about cochlear implants. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cochlea Implant is it for me or not?
I had heard about this book from someone at Kapiolani Community college who knew I had an interest in getting the Cochlea implant. This book opened my eyes, because I was deathly scared of getting the implant, but reading Bev's book ...has also opened my eyes wide enough to accept that the cochlea implant might just be for me...Bev always had expressed the willingness to be able to hear music. to be able to understand the lyrics of the song thats being belted out on the radio, to be able to hear the phone without a third person, to be able to carry a conversation without missing a word...to wait 40 years like Bev did to be able to hear music, its kind of sad...>I really liked this book...

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent factual, and emotional aid to cochlear community.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Found it engrossing, fascinating and encouraging as a parent of a child who has just received an implant. I also specifically found Ms. Biderman's honesty about her childhood experiences and processes and challenges in life as a result of her hearing impairment an eye opener, especially for a parent who is trying to understand from all aspects what my child must be going through in his new journey into sound!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful description of CI activation. Great book!
This book is a great read for anyone trying to decide if they want to get a CI or for anyone who might have already had the surgery and want a good realistic description of what the activation might be like. That's when I read it, while waiting to heal after surgery and before activation. As a matter of fact, I think it should be recommended reading for all CI canidates. It helped on that first day to know that even if I didn't hear speech, it would get better! Lots of interesting history of CI research and personal stories. Thank you, Bev, for a great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars You must read Wired For Sound!
Beverly Biderman's journey from deafness to hearing is eloquently captured in her compelling book, Wired For Sound. The reader shares the author's kaleidoscopic array of emotions which range from guilt and anger over her own hearing loss to unsurpassed joy in the new hearing she receives from her cochlear implant. Those readers who have a severe to profound hearing loss or who are deaf and who long to hear will feel an empathy in her travails which is almost uncanny.

Wired For Sound reflects more, however, than merely a personal experience. It compiles detailed resource material on cochlear implants and, thus, is must reading for anyone who is investigating the potential benefits and occasional pitfalls of cochlear implantation. While Ms. Biderman has chosen for herself a cochlear implant to enable her to more fully assimilate herself within the hearing world to which she has, even when deaf, always belonged, her presentation is unbiased and non-judgmental. She respects the Deaf culture and does not engage in proselytizing.

Wired For Sound is a book which transcends the issue of hearing versus deafness. Indeed, this marvelous saga of courage and compassion offers any caring person hope for the future of humanity. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I sold this one back
Although there were some nice photos and illustrations, this book did not provide the detail I was hoping for. It was the assigned text for the Fundamentals of Audiology class I took last semester. I usually keep the best books in each area of Audiology and Speech Pathology, but I found that this book was not helpful for me to keep as a reference book. The book we used for Introduction to Audiology was actually more helpful than this and had a great CD-Rom...Hopefully the next edition will include some practical changes. ... Read more

Book Description

This is the first single-authored book to attempt to bridge the gap between aphasia research and the rehabilitation of patients with this language disorder.Studies of the deficits underlying aphasia and the practice of aphasia rehabilitation have often diverged, and the relationship between theory and practice in aphasiology is loose. The goal of this book is to help close this gap by making explicit the relationship between what is to be rehabilitated and how to rehabilitate it.L Early chapters cover the history of aphasia and its therapy from Broca's discoveries to the 1970's, and provide a description of the classic aphasia syndromes. The middle section describes the contribution of cognition neuropsychology and the treatment models it has inspired. It includes discussion of the relationship between the treatment approach and the functional model upon which it is based. The final chapters deal with aphasia therapy. After providing a sketch of a working theory of aphasia, Basso describes intervention procedures for disorders resulting from damage at the lexical and sentence levels as well as a more general conversation-based intervention for severe aphasics.L Anna Basso has run an aphasia rehabilitation unit for more than thirty years. In this book she draws on her considerable experience to provide researchers, clinicians, and their students and trainees with comprehensive coverage of the evolution and state of the art of aphasia research and therapy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent therapy tool for higher level cognition
I work at a outpatient head injury rehab facility and deal mainly with higher level cognition such as attention, problem solving, and memory. It is very difficult to find materials and I used to make up my own. This book has allowed me to free up alot of the time I used producing my own materials. It is a terrific book and a great asset. One other therapist in my facility has bought the book and our student affiliate has taken great interest in it. Great job at making such a useful tool!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent therapy guide with useful and functional tasks
This is an excellent book for beginning therapists as well as those who have been in the field for several years. I have had the distinct pleasure of working with these authors over the last few months and have found them to be an excellent example of dedicated speech therapists who are willing to go the extra mile for their clients who are higher functioning. The acitivites in this book are functional and easy to adapt to individual clients and their needs. I guarantee that you will find this book useful in planning the most effective and functional therapy for you clients. Enjoy!!

As a graduate student, I have found this book to be a valuable resource. I have used it in many different practicum settings, and find the activities and exercises easy to use as well as effective. In addition, the appendix on 'therapy documentation, transition, and discharge' has been very helpful as I learn more about the paperwork that accompanies the field of speech-language pathology. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars technical information for the physician
This was a very academic book on stuttering. It was written primarily for physicians, though people who stutter (and their friends/family) may find some value in the book. It describes (in technical detail) and defines stuttering and talks about how stuttering happens. It does not answer the question of why, which is a question that nobody has an answer for, but it does reveal the mechanics of how stuttering occurs. The authors reveal that stuttering is partially genetic, but not always. The book shows how complex a behavior stuttering is.

The book does get into the treatment of stuttering, both for children and adults. The one thing I would like to note about this is that it seems like the sections on treatment is geared more to speech therapists rather than a patient. It gives an idea of how a physician should treat stuttering, but not the actual techniques used. This book is more of a reference than a "self-therapy" book, so if you are thinking about getting this book, please understand what kind of book it is. It is highly technical and detailed for the physician, and only in short sections did I find value in it as a stutterer. ... Read more
