3-0 out of 5 stars Where's the genome?
On the basis of a favorable "Nature Genetics" review, I bought the first edition of this book--and I was quite disappointed with what I found. Basically, it is just another text on molecular & cell biology but with lousy graphics. (The author explicitly states that the figures and other visualizations somehow limit one's learning & thinking.) I am hoping the recent crops of explicit genomics-oriented texts will be better. But I'd steer clear of this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent General Overview of Genomics
I found that "Genomes" provides the reader with a thorough yet gentle introduction to the field -- ample illustrations, well-written text, frequent sidebars describing relevant techniques or developments. I've found the book to be a good reference to have on the shelf, and have purchased copies for people when they join my lab group in order to introduce them to or refamiliarize themselves with the technologies underlying the generation of sequence data. I can very easily see this book being used to supplement lectures in an introductory course on genomics and biotechnology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Text
"...probably the most up-to-date textbook on molecular biology...a useful text...and reference..." (Annals of Pharmacotherapy, September 2003)

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous Text
"...a marvelous text...plenty of definitions and excellent illustrations essential for an introductory textbook...the reader is...guided wonderfully through the text...this text is an essential cornerstone of information..." (Pharmaceutical Research, Vol. 19, No. 12, December 2002)

5-0 out of 5 stars User Friendly
"...a second edition to incorporate new developments in genome science and to make the book more 'user friendly'...the book substantially exceeds that modest objective; this is a text suitable for anyone who does not specialize in genome science." (Clinical Chemistry, Vol. 48, No. 12) ... Read more

Book Description

The Atlas of Functional Neuroanatomy guides the student and practitioner in visualizing and understanding the many parts of the central nervous system (CNS)-the key to knowing where diseases occur. The illustrations include photographs and drawings (some color-enhanced) which have been selectively labeled; each is accompanied by text which explains the structures named and appropriate clinically-relevant comments. The Atlas presents an overview of the nervous system, followed by the sensory and motor systems as they traverse the CNS. These features prepare students to work through the localization process. The atlas also offers a detailed look at the microanatomy, particularly of the brainstem. Radiographic images are also included, along with illustrations of the blood supply of the brain. The final section features a unique set of illustrations, and these serve as the foundation for an integrated view of the structure and function of the limbic system. The accompanying CD-ROM contains all the illustrations from the print version, with the advantage of 3-D visualization and full color. Most noteworthy are the pathways of the spinal cord and brainstem, and the detailed illustrations of the microanatomy of the brainstem, along with color sections of the human brainstem. All of this enables students to approach the diseases of the nervous system with a strong anatomical background. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent clear text
I have been hunting for a concise and clear atlas that would help me visualize the brain in 3-D. Atlases I used in medical school were 2-D, too detailed, disjointed, and left alot to the imagination as to how the brain parts fit togther as a whole. This book takes the guess work out of that and is a text as well as an atlas. It uses airbrush pictures to help with visualization. In addtion, it has the added bonus of including a CD-ROM. It is a delight to read and in only minutes a day, I am gaining a whole new understanding of the brain. The pages are printed on high quality paper and you can easily use colored markers to color in any part of the brain you wish. There is even a suggested color chart. I am a neurology resident and I am so glad I found this book!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great learning aid
This is a great learning tool to help memorize key microbes and other needed material. Visual learning is so much easier and more fun because facts stick to your brain more. I also used the following which is also sold on amazon.com:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questons and Answers (ISBN: 0971999635)
The second book helped me to know the kind of questions to prepare for on my exams. I am a undergraduate student and found both books very helpful. In fact, I got a 93 average in my college microbiology class.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good if you have it, but not necessary
It is a great book if you like the idea of coloring (or you liked when you were in kindergarden) and also the theorical information at the side of each slide is very helpful when studying the subject. It is a good addition to your library, but if you'd have to buy a companion to your classes, buy "Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple" by Gladwin and Tattler. In short, a good book that makes the subject more interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
This is a great book! It makes everything simple, which is the best way to learn

5-0 out of 5 stars Micro made interesting

5-0 out of 5 stars Use as directed, separate the forest from the trees!
I'm a first year Med student and have found this book to be a valuable resource. The explanations are perfect for gaining a broad understanding of often difficult subjects before diving into the textbooks and journals.

The chapters about fluid/electrolyte balance and immunology are incredible, clarifying concepts that I had struggled through previously. In addition, clinical correlations augment the discussion of normal physiology, keeping things real for those us getting early clinical exposure on the wards. The author implements useful drawings and flowcharts that further simplify complex material. For example, the immunology "cartoon" flowchart is perfect for understanding the central role of CD4 cells in binding to an MHC2, and depicting the numerous downstream events of adaptive immunity. In takes about an hour or two to plow through a chapter (and actually understand everything), but in the end, you have a great foundation that can be enhanced through lectures or PBL depending on your program.

Regarding the negative reviews below, what do these people expect from such a thin book? The author even admits in his preface that it should be used in conjunction with a text. I don't feel this book is intended for USMLE preparation or as a "study guide" for a medical school exam. These reviewers would be better served with a large spoon, a copy of Guyton, and a bib.

Clinical Phys made ridiculously simple dumbs down complex subjects and gives you a big picture understanding of how things work- this is the first book I've come across that makes learning physiology simple and efficient. In addition, I've found the Radiology, Anatomy and Microbiology books in this series to be particularly useful so far.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent resource
As with other books by Dr. Goldberg, this one is nothing short of miraculous! Through a systems-based approach, an otherwise complicated and tedious subject is transformed into an accesible and enjoyable voyage. Quite honestly, you should leave your standard thick physiology texts in the corner to use for curls or bench pressing... this book ABSOLUTELY encompasses the key knowledge of physiology in a fraction of the time. It seems like a gimmick, but it isn't. Having graduated from med school a few years ago, I can still say with authority that this book will serve you well into the future, not to mention on your next test, which will undoubtedly include mostly clinically oriented questions which, in turn, can ALL be answered after a careful and thoughtful review of this book. Don't waste any more time... read this one first! --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money
I agree with other reviewers of this ancillary text. It's too incomplete even to function as a quick study guide. Major topics are glossed over and vital areas are missed entirely. A vastly better choice is the STARS Physiology text. The Clinical Physiology Made Ridiculously Simple book is simple NOT as good as others in this series, especially the Microbiology text which is excellent. Med students - don't waste your money on this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not very useful
I know it is not a complete textbook, but the information is "too incomplete", there is many important stuff left out and so many irrelevant information in it, it lacks order and needs well placed subtitles to make reading easier. The ECG and the diagram on pulmonary capacities is good, but this book is really not worth it. It is possible to find a better choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Without Blood Pressure, you die quickly...
... as it is pointed in page 5, but with this book, you learn quicky AND easily. Although I do not own the whole "ridiculously simple" series, I recomend the use of these books in the educative process. ... Read more

"...an intriguing work targeted toward biologists wanting to solve problems...provides a compendium of many biological insights and breakthroughs and will be a useful resource...highly recommended." (Choice, Vol. 41, No. 7, March 2004)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for bioinformatics from a user's perspective
Unlike the previous review, I found the user perspective, rather than the mathematical perspective refreshing. I have been teaching bioinformatics to CS students for several years and all too often the students are great at algorithms and theory but do not understand the user they are designing for. This book teaches just that -- how to use bioinformatics from a user or researcher's viewpoint. Medical students and biologists will find it useful for direct applicability to their work, but I also reccomend it for bioinformatics students who need to complement their theoretical background with practical use. All too often, CS students of bioinformatics can design a great database with powerful access tools, but with a horrible interface because they don't have this perspective.

Now, for the book itself. It is easy to read and covers all aspects of bioinformatics from a sequence perspective (information retrieval, BLAST, gene expression and microarrays, proteomics and protein bioinformatics, genomes and disease). The coverage of databases and URLs is thourough and the text is easy to read, yet useful. The book is comprehensive with one area seemingly missing -- it would have been useful to include a chapter on systems biology and/or cellular modeling and the tools available (i.e. E-Cell). The book is especially useful to a researcher who is trying to explore all aspects of a particular gene, protein, disease, or pathway using bioinformatics tools.

The book is in stark contrast to the other Pevser (that is Pevzner) who wrote a bioinformatics book that surveyed algorithm theory underlying bioinformatics.

This book is also useful for less technical professionals in industry -- the managers, lawyers and venture capitalists that pervade the biotech landscape all need to communicate effectively and they can surely learn that here, provided they have some background in cell biology first.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bioinformatics for computational dummies
A genious attempt to present bioinformatics as if it is a discipline without any computational content. Perfect for students who lost any hope to understand what is the engine driving bioinformatics tools but want simply to memorize how to use them instead. Must be a very comfortable reading for biologists but is as exciting as a long carefully designed restaurant menu for a mathematician. If the author wants to raise a new generation of biologists with this book then biology and *real* bioinformatics will be divorced forever. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Crystal clear physiology!
I do not think there is a better physiology book out there that can explain what you need to know without going into millions of pages of needless explanations in medical school. We just don't have the time to read texts and this book does an awesome job of explaining physiology in a concise manner. The small physio Costanzo review book is good- this one is even better! Sometimes you need just a bit more of an explanation. I use this book to accompany all of my physio lectures.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME PHYSIO REVIEW BOOK

5-0 out of 5 stars BRS Embryology
The BRS for Embryology was a supplemental text that I found incredibly helpful. The book helps to make even the most confusing development stages easy to understand and learn. It helps to weed through the details and focus on the main concepts. I found this book to be truly helpful in studying and preparing for med school exams for my first year. I would recommend this to any student who feels confused or overwhelmed by developmental anatomy.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent and time saving
