Organized according to body systems, each of the 170 plates featured in this book includes an ingenious color-key system anatomical terminology is linked to detail illustration of the structures of the body.

Wynn Kapit graduated in 1955 from the University of Miami, Florida with honors in Business Administration and Law. He then attended Art Center School in Los Angeles and worked in New York as a graphic designer and advertising art director from 1960-66. He moved to California to pursue a painting career and was given a one-man show at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco in 1968. He then attended the University of California at Berkeley and received a Masters in Painting and worked as a portraitist and teacher of figure drawing.

While taking a class in human anatomy at San Francisco City College, he discovered a way to effectively learn the subject by coloring in drawings, diagrams and names. The teacher of the course, Lawrence Elson, Ph.D. agreed to help him produce a coloring book. Elson wrote and Kapit designed and illustrated The Anatomy Coloring Book, which was published in 1977 and has been a widely-translated bestseller ever since. The Physiology Coloring Book was published in 1987, with the assistance of two professors from Berkeley: Robert Macey and Esmail Meisami. The Geography Coloring Book was published in 1991; Kapit drew the maps and wrote the text. The Anatomy Coloring Book was published in a second edition in 1993, and second editions of Geography and Physiology Coloring Books will be published in 1997.

Lawrence M. Elson received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley in Zoology (Pre-Med), and completed his graduate and Ph.D. work in Human Anatomy also at the University of California, Berkeley. Elson has served as an instructor in human anatomy at the City College of San Francisco, an assistant professor of anatomy at Baylor College of Medicine, and as a lecturer at numerous additional universities and professional organizations.

Elson is the founder and president of Coloring Concepts, Inc. (CCI), producer and packager of college level, educational, scientific directed-coloring texts. He is the author/co-author of the Anatomy Coloring Book, Human Brain Coloring Book, Zoology Coloring Book, and Microbiology Coloring Book.

Presently, he is principally functioning as a clinical and forensic anatomist retained as a consultant to governments, provinces, insurance and other corporations, and law firms on causation of injury issues in cases in or anticipated to be involved in litigation.

Future plans include expanding CCI by developing new titles in the physical sciences and other education-related disciplines.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Students of Anatomy, Massage, etc.
Just when you thought they couldn't improve on the original, they keep making it better. The third edition contains all the strengths of the first two editions with dynamite new additions that will help all students of anatomy. Go down to your local hobby shop and buy the biggest set of felt tip pens you can find. After the book is colored, it should be kept as a quick reference book. You color the labels to match the illustrations, so it's easy to look back and spot the name of the muscle, bone, organ, etc. Make sure to read the section on HOW TO USE THIS BOOK before you begin coloring.

As the owner of a massage therapy school, we use this book and Salvo's Massage Therapy: Principles and Practice as our two main texts. It is incredible for those who are visual learners. We highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Anatomy Aid -- A must for med students
This book is the best reference on the human body I've found! It focuses individually on each system, with large ready-to-color pages. This book list all bones and muscles in the human body (in the drawings, too) and reveals their locations. It goes into extreme detail about everything, and shows a fetal circulation diagram, which I have had trouble finding in other books. This book lists the view names (anterior, posterior, superior, ventral, etc.) and gives a diagram. It even spends some time talking about cells and tissues, with a colorable diagram of a cell. This book is a MUST for med students, and would make a great reference book for physicians. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in human anatomy, for I sure am enjoying it. Also check out "The Physiology Coloring Book, 2nd Edition". Note:For this book you should have a good supply of quality colored pencils, probably about 30, including gray and black.

5-0 out of 5 stars think this is a kid's book? think again
I am in college-level beginning anatomy and the instructor was quizzing the class on terminology. He gave the definition or pointed to a body part and we had to shout out the answer. I knew all of the terms while my classmates struggled.

During break, my classmates asked how I knew/remembered this stuff. My answer? "The Anatomy Coloring Book." They blithely dismissed it as kid's stuff, a _coloring_ book. Well, that may be...but *I* know the material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Study Aide!
This book was a life saver when I had to take anatomy! It soo saved me! I was better able to study for tests and I actually learned different sections of things such as the brain and cardiovascular system. If you are taking anatomy, I highly recommend this! It will help tremendously!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Addition to Any Anatomy Text
I purchased this while taking a course in Anatomy, and did much better in the class. What would take the text a chapter to explain, this book explained in a few pages - sometimes in a few paragraphs. It was much easier to understand the organ systems when you could actually see how things worked. The coloring aspect to me at first, seemed rather silly, but it was so much fun that I quickly got past that! I would definately recommend this book to anyone taking anatomy - purchase it with your other texts if you can (I waited till mid semester to buy mine), and start off using it as a study guide - it will definately help. They make many other of these types of books also, so if you are studying biology, microbiology, physiology, and so on, it might also help to get these. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Moore's Anatomy text is a standard; rightfully so
I am a medical student at Texas A&M USHSC COM. Moore's is an excellent text for basic anatomy. They have included excellent drawings and the content is complete. Added bonuses to the text include insightful clinical correlation and appropriate embryological try-ins. The text appears wordy and most medical students will try to use a review book in its stead. This would be a mistake. Students who read Moore will retain more anatomy all the way into clinicals and will be ahead of their peers who did not. Overall this is a very fine text: best used in conjunction with Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy and Langman's Medical Embryology. *I will mention here, in fact, that the embryo text by Moore (The Developing Human: Clinically Oriented Embryology) does not meet the same high standard and is wrought with errors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rave review for Moore anatomy book
I thoroughly enjoyed studying anatomy with the Moore's book. The illustrations are great--I especially found the individual drawings of the leg and arm muscles helpful, and the 3-D drawings of the pelvic region helped me to better visualize this complex area. I was able to study most of the time from Moore and only had to use the Color Atlas of Anatomy as a reference.

The text was clearly written and very detailed. At times, it was more detailed than my first year anatomy class, but I was able to skip or skim these sections. I don't think I ever found Moore to be lacking in information.

I found the boxes highlighting attachments, function, or distribution for nerves, vessels, and muscles to be very helpful. They proved to be a quick reference.

Finally, the blue boxes with clinical information made anatomy so much more interesting. I learned many relevant facts and applied, clinical anatomy.

3-0 out of 5 stars just too clincal
In fact it's usefull, mainly for a clinical aproach of anatomy, based on surface anatomy and changes in structure originated by injuries. however when performing dissection, that just does not help, the descriptive anatomy, is just to slim, and does not really contributes to understand the three dimensional structure of the human body. However for a quick reference could be an option. Personally prefer the testut-jacob topographic anatomy

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Pre-medical Buy!!!
I thought this book was amazing!! It was my first medical school textbook. I flipped through the pages, glassy-eyed, realizing that this was what I had been working for!

Unfortunately, 2 years later, I ahve still not had the time to do more than use it as a reference book! I am hoping to read the entire thing sometime before retirement! Don't get me wrong, it is a great book, and I highly recommend it for medical students. However, looking back, I wish I had bought it BEFORE I came to medical school. Having the time to read the entire book, and learn the material would have been an incredible asset! Premedical students often wonder what they could be doing to prepare themselves for medical school. Buying this book and reading it would be high on my recommendation list!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, excellent reference
This book is quite thorough for anatomy and although very wordy, I think it covers a lot of anatomical information that every med student should know. I used this book as a reference for learning the facts in my anatomy classes. I also found the following to be an excellent source:

The second book had similar type questions to my anatomy exams in med school. My advice is to get both books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic & excellent histology - reviewed by Marcelo Antunes
This book presents all basic tissues followed by descriptions of all human body systems. Microscopic anatomy and physiology are well balanced throughtout the textbook. The brazilian authors, Junqueira & Carneiro, used a simple, readable language along with very good illustrations and photos (including a colored atlas) to produce this book: the result is a text in which the student will find not only precise informations but a textbook of Histology simple enough to read, to study, to learn, and to review. Perhaps, more clinical comments and/or Pathology relating topics should be included in the next edition.

3-0 out of 5 stars The Cd-Room is great but...
The CD- room is user friendly and thats good when you have to study a lot and need something easy .. But The figures in the book never had the zoom or the Microscopy resolution with every slide in the book. And well Is important to know that kid of information specialy if you are interested in microscopy

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Great
This book is one of the best books i've ever read in basic histology. it's really good for medical students, Simple and straight to the point.
Every histologic feature had it's clinical correlation which is so helpful for students throughout their Predoc studies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pharmacotherapy is a must buy book for every pharmacist
Pharmacotherapy: a pathophysiological approach is a book designed specifically for pharmacists. It covers a wide range of diseases and includes introductory chapters covering different subjects in the pharmacy practice from clinical pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, pharmacoeconomics, evidence-based medicine and much more. Every chapter introduce the pathophysiology of the disease relevant to drug therapy, then the full management plan is evoqued with the clinical use of the different drugs. I recommend to read in parallel `Applied Therapeutics: the clinical use of drug `to see how the management is applied in clinical settings. In second term, one can practice with the cases of the Pharmacotherapy: a patient focused approach before applying to real life cases.
I know i will continue to use these books as long as i still phamacist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pharmacotherapy not pharmacology
Addressing the negative comments given to this book by a Dr. Doctor who's going to become yet another doctor, if you truly have your PhD and PharmD (from a halfway decent school), you would recognize the difference between pharmacology and pharmacotherapy. It's awfully troubling if you don't. In agreement with the "triDoc", Goodman and Gillman's is the superior of the 2... in terms of PHARMACOLOGY. However, if you want a very good reference for a practical approach in the treatment options of certain disease states (i.e. PHARMACOTHERAPY), this book should be your choice. It's a wonderful and much used reference. I will agree with another reviewer in that it may be worthwhile to check into buying the hand book addition first (due to its more compact size and less cost). Pharmacotherapy versus pharmacology...Hmmmmmm.

1-0 out of 5 stars Probably the Worst Pharmacy Text I've Ever Seen
Being a Ph.D.,Pharm.D., and now in medical school, I have seen a lot of texts in the realm of pharmacology and pharmacy practice. This book is really bad. The pathophysiology is weak at best and the authors apparently felt that the pharmacology (MOA's, etc.)where not worth elaborating on. They seem to have skimmed on the "pharm" part. Unfortunately this book is the primary textbook used at a lot of pharmacy schools... if you are a pharm student, you are much better off buying Goodman and Gillman's! It will be much more useful resource throughout your career. It will also be a better study resource for exams and seminars. If you're a med student, run for your life! This book will do nothing for you. I regret buying this book and feel it is not worth the price.

In Addendum: I concur with my fellow OH reader but, as any book with the prefix, "pharm" should have been addressed. When all is said and done, as pharmacists, that is the root of our practice and knowledge. G & G does a better job at therapeutics anyway. Save your money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference
As a pharmacy student, I found this to be an excellent reference - it covers an incredibly wide variety of topics in fantastic detail. However, the book is a little too wordy and detailed to get the overall grasp of a subject if you are covering it for the first time. But if you just need to look up that certain drug, side effect, condition or other similar information this is the book for you! There are great summary and comparison charts, easy to follow headings and a great index.

3-0 out of 5 stars skip this and get the HANDbook instead
This is probably a good book, but you will never really know because you won't read it. Too verbose, hard to cross-reference when studying for exams and boards. Skip this book and get the Handbook by the same people and save some money and a backache to boot. My textbook is gathering dust on my bookshelf in my mother's house while my handbook has been a great reference. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Graduate Nursing Student
I found the book vague and unclear. It was recommended as a "reference" book for a graduate level pathophysiology course and it was the first book I returned. There are several other books on pathophysiology that are on the market for about the same price or a bit more that are MUCH more thorough and useful for undergraduate, graduate or medical student reference. I would NOT recommend this book for anyone looking at any type of indepth medical information.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very confusing book for USMLE prep
Hi there first of all I would like to say that I am from Brazil, Recife, Pernambuco. I went to a university called UPE, FESP which is in the north east part of Brazil. I bought this book because I thought that it would complement BRS pathology'
But it really didn't so as I thought that it would;
I mean it does but its like discussing too much one some points so its just not really a good book for the USMLE step1 prep; I was actually led to think that because of something I had read on the first aid book that said that '
Really did not like the book at all for the usmle prep. Although you can see that it's a very well made book and they put their hearts into making it but it's just not good enough for the boards.
It's not serving me any good I barely opened it since I bought it and I got their latest edition it was sort of a waste of money for me' I think that this book might be of value for the students at UCSF that are taking classes on introduction to medicine or something like that'
But for the usmle? Forget it'!!!
It's really confusing, and there are no simple index for a particular disease, meaning If you look for something in specific it will be related with some many things that you wont see it right there; there won't be simple diseases listed there for you to look at like that'
Every time I go look for something its not there or it's in contest with something else makes you loose so much time looking at it to find it' It's a very good book but not to be used as a complement to BRS pathology unless you're taking the class.
Hope that this was of help to some of you'
Dr.Claudio A.G.Monteiro Filho.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very deatail oriented text
My biochem class "officially" uses the Lehninger textbook, but my professor also uses the voet&voet as a reference. I'll say the Lehninger book is good to read as intro, but if you really want to learn the details you've to use this book instead. I think not a single biochemistry book out there is good enough for every aspects, but i'll highly recommend using the voet text along with another one so they can fill each other's holes.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Biochemistry text on the market
This book covers much of the same material as Stryer with about twice the detail and vastly better illustrations. V&V's massive advantage is a detailed methods chapter that lets you understand how the advances in biology have been made, and why science is so slow and frustrating. If you're serious about understanding biological chemistry (as distinct from understanding how the cell works, in which case you'll want a book on molecular cell biology), look no further than this. The third edition will be coming out in 2002, at about the same time as the sixth edition of Stryer. Expect V&V to be more up-to-date, better illustrated and less verbose than its competition (although obviously I haven't seen either yet). If you're a medical student, try Devlin's Biochemistry with clinical correlations. If you want an integrated cell biology/biochemistry text, try Garrett and Grisham, including part 5.

1-0 out of 5 stars Voet and Voet Biochemistry
This book is complete garbage, especially considering the price. Explanations of relatively simple ideas are often made unnecessarily complicated. A good deal of the writing is unnecessarily flowery, and sentence structure is quite often more complex than is necessary or desireable for a book of this sort. I wasted an enormous amount of time rereading sections that turned out to be extremely confusing ways of explaining relatively uncomplicated concepts. In my view, potentially confusing scientific concepts should be explained in the simplest possible way. There's enough substance in the actual material that decorative language is definitely not necessary. For the price, I would have expected better editing as well, quite a few noticeable typos (3rd edition Vol. 1). I haven't read any biochem textbooks besides this one, but I'd recommend avoiding this one at all costs.

5-0 out of 5 stars The very best biochemistry textbook out there
I've used the 1st edition of this textbook during my undergraduate days as a B.A. in biology (but concentrating in molecular biology and biochemistry), and then I used the 2nd edition during medical school and my fellowship in biophysical chemistry. If you are in the medical sciences, biochemistry, biophysics, physical chemistry, and even organic chemistry, this is the "must-have" book for you. It contains a more detailed explanation of the topic than typical undergraduate textbooks, but it still has excellent coherence and clarity to each and every topic despite the amount of information. I feel this book satisfies even the most "physical sciences" minded of us. I'm still waiting for the 3rd edition!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST
If you're looking for a biochemistry textbook, this is it.

I have used everything from Stryer to Matthews and Van Holde, and this book tops them all.

Great illustrations, extensive topics covered, and well-written text. A+++ ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best text books I've read yet...
I have the new 5th edition. As a nursing student this text has been extremely easy to read and understand the concepts. It keeps you interested in the information with practical examples and lively dialogue and includes helpful memory tips. It also comes with a cd-rom and access to a web site that really help you study and review the material. My only complaint is the chemistry chapter (Chpt. 2) is a little long and dry but then that is probably due to the subject matter and not the author. I would highly recommend it to anyone!

Book Description

Anatomy and Physiology 6th edition was designed to help students develop a solid, basic understanding of anatomy and physiology without an encyclopedic presentation of detail.Great care has been taken to select important concepts and to carefully describe the anatomy of cells, organs, and organ systems. The basic recipe that has been followed for six editions of this text is to combine clear and accurate descriptions of anatomy with precise explanations of how structures function and examples of how they work together to maintain life.To emphasize the concepts of anatomy and physiology, the authors provide explanations of how the systems respond to aging, changes in physical activity, and disease, with a special focus on homeostasis and the regulatory mechanisms that maintain it.Timely and interesting examples demonstrate the application of knowledge in a clinical context. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect overview book for medicine students
This book is strongly recommended in the education for medical students in the University of Lund. That's why I read it. It's perfect as a startup book for your pre-clin medical studies. It's not deep enough in the physiology part (although anatomy and especially histology is very good) but the integrated approach is really terrific and it makes you understand in a whole new way. If you want to become a good doctor, you should absolutely buy this book, or borrow it a least in your library. The first integrated anatomy & physiology book I've read that's deep enough for medical students. Good work Seeley.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Seeley makes the complex simple
I had the pleasure of not only getting to use this text in my A&P class but I was taught by Dr. Seeley at Idaho State University. Great text with great explinations. I am still using it as a resource in Physician Assistant training.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Basics of Anatomy and Physiology
I am sure that people who have read this book will agree that this product is the means of excellent basic Anatomy and Physiology. I have found figures and data tables very clear and easily understandable. Excellent Summaries at the end of each chapter beautifies this product. Clinical facts given from time to time are as interesting and knowledgeable as "Develop Your Reasoning Skills" Problems. This book deserve a chance from every Anatomy student. I conratulate the authors and highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Text Book
As one of the many professional reviewers for this text, I thought I'd take a minute to write a review for amazon.com. This book is a great text resource for the college level Anatomy and Physiology classes. It has excellent illustrations, web sites, charts, figures, and tables. But, more than that...it is readable. Book Description

This newly revised and updated fifth edition of Devlin’s Textbook of Biochemistry with Clinical Correlations presents the biochemistry of mammalian cells, relates events at the cellular level to physiological processes in the whole animal, and cites examples of human diseases derived from aberrant biochemical processes.
This edition significantly expands the clinical correlation that highlight the significance of biochemistry to specific clinical problems. Full-color illustrations provide clear explanations for the concepts discussed, and end-of-chapter questions and answers act as challenging study material. Reorganized into five practical sections, Textbook of Biochemistry with Clinical Correlations covers these topics and much more:

  • Structure of macromolecules–DNA, RNA, and protein structure
  • Information transmission–replication, transcription, protein synthesis, and control of gene expression
  • Functions of proteins–protein families, enzymes, membrane structure, and transport mechanisms
  • Metabolic pathways and their control–carbohydrate, lipid, amino acid, and nucleotide metabolism
  • Physiological processes–hormone and signal transduction, biochemistry of nervous tissue, muscle vision, coagulation and digestion, and principles of nutrition

4-0 out of 5 stars DO not confuse the book with the software
The book is one of THE basics choice in Biochemistry for medical school. Good basic biochemistry with interesthing associated clinical cases. But please do not confuse with the software with has the figures of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take a chance to be fascinated by biochemistry
I am 4° semester medical student and ever since I was introduced to this book (about a year ago by my biochemistry class teacher), it has proved to be a very useful biochemistry information resource. I have other biochemistry texts because I like to study from different points of view, but this text is a little bit different from the basic biochemistry textbook in that the information presented here is most relevant to the clinical setting. After reading any chapter it will be clear to you that you made a good investment. The most important thing is that the book is written in a very understandable reading wiht many examples and illustrations. The chapter on metabolic interrelationships will proof of great value to understanding biochemistry as a fundamental discipline in medicine; in a sense it opened my eyes (and yours too) to what at first seems a boring subject.

If you are thinking that because the book is presented in a clinical way you'll loose basic information, don't be. I took the chance and believe me I am not dissapointed at all, otherwise I wouldn't be recommending it to you. Good luck.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too detailed and wordy for medical school
I just finished first semester medical school, and we used this book. The chapters read like a bad and verbose novel. With the time constraints in medical school, you really need a book that gets to the point. That's why the Illustrated Review Series are much better for medical school students. I will admit that this is a great book for graduate biochem if you're interested in research. Stay away if your in medical school and rely upon the notes and a supplemental book like Lipcotts. You'll get more confused reading this text b/c it's way too detailed.

4-0 out of 5 stars ANALYTICAL AND INTERPRETATIVE
This is a very comprehensive biochemistry textbook: well-written and well-organized. It maintained both analytical and interpretative approach in most of its chapters. Its clinical applications were evident in the way it handled nucleic acids, nucleotides, bioenergetics, immunochemistry, enzymology, and gene replications. Each metabolic pathway it discussed is well-detailed, and is supported with illustrative charts.
The only thing this book demands from its reader is good Organic Chemistry foundation. It is a very good text, although that its retail price is clearly on the high side.

3-0 out of 5 stars vs. Stryer

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for biochemistry
This book is complete and thorough in explaing every energy pathway (Kreb's cycle, electron transport system, glycolysis, etc.) The diagrams are helpful and explain the material with visual detail especially in this type of book. The only thing, the book is somewhat hard to understand for reading it the first time. I know biochemistry is a hard subject, but I thought it could be explained in a little easier fashion. However, other than that, the book is quite organized and a must buy for every chiropractic student taking biochemistry. I also highly recommend:
National Board of Chiropractic Part I Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
Both these books I found very helpful for studying for the National boards. The text is a must for studying for the biochemistry part of the chiro boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biochemistry for medical studies
An excellent book in biochemistry for a beginner in this subject. I especially like the the way the chapters are administrated. The book is best read from beginning to the end, because this will give you the whole picture in a educative fashion. It covers all the essential subjects of cellbiology needed for the medical student, as for instance metabolism and DNA. It also has advantages over other biochemistry books with its nicer apperance. With the pictures, medical notices and cellbiology material it covers all thats necessary. Good stuff and pleasant reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry is simply the best one.
The Lehninger Princicples of Biochemistry is the best book in biochemistry that has been written. I have use it in my biochemistry course in my first year in school medicine and thanks to this book I pass my class with one of the best notes in the group. Any other book exposes the biochemistry principles with clarity and coherence like the Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry. I can't wait for the 4th edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Can't wait for the Next Edition!
If you are a undergraduate or a graduate student who needs to learn some biochemistry from the ground up (without an instructor), this is the text for you. Lehninger really outdoes himself by creating a Biochemistry textbook that's not only colorful and pretty to look at but also wonderfully written. Of all of the science textbooks I've had to read to date, this was the best! Lehninger really does write the text so that it's like reading a novel, which allows for maximum absorption of the material he covers. Occasionally, I hit spots in my reading which were harder to understand, but that was because my own ignorance and not his. He begins the text with a review of the basics of general chemistry and organic chemistry which come into play with the biochemistry subject matter. Then he continues on, developing the student's foundations with describing protein structure and protein function, working his way up with enzymatic properties and activities. Carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids come next. The last section of the book is devoted to biochemical mechanisms, which is alot, but it is covered adequately for a beginner's textbook. The only major drawback: many of the answers to the chapter questions are wrong, hopefully, this will be addressed in the 4th Ed. If your school doesn't use Lehninger, protest, write treatises, do anything to convince your Biochemistry professor to use this text to teach you biochemisty! It's expensive, but once you have this textbook, don't ever sell it because if you're going into chemistry or biochemistry, it will be a priceless resource for your future studies!

5-0 out of 5 stars Two thumbs way up
This book is one of the best biochemistry available. It presents an extensive amount of valuable concepts and information a highly readable manner. I used this text as an undergraduate and even as a gradduate student I find it impossible to part with it. The understanding biochemistry CD that is included with the book is also an excellent tool for revision. I found that the retention of information and ease of understanding is higher when the book is used in conjunction with the CD. It comes highly recommended for any serious students of biochemistry and as an invaluable reference. ... Read more

Book Description

Would you like to bring guest lectures like researchers, physicians, or fellow instructors into you microbiology course? With this third edition of INTRODUCTION TO MICROBIOLOGY you get the perspective of all of those three professionals. John Ingraham, a professor of microbiology at University of California at Davis, and Catherine Ingraham, his daughter and a practicing physician, utilize their experience within a case history approach complemented by a great technology package. Each chapter in INTRODUCTION TO MICROBIOLOGY now consistently begins with a case history, which John Ingraham has found very motivatonal to students who are new to the study ofbasic science. Because Catherine Ingraham studied to become a physician by interviewing patients, determining causes and implementing solutions, she knows mastry comes from high interest human stories rather than clinical presentations. Many of the case histories found in this book are taken from Catherine's experience as a physician. This combination of experiences and talent brings a case-based quality to every lecture and homework session. This unique author team also provides up-to-the-minute currency. Coverage of new microbial "events" such as biological warfare, studied by John and its effects prepared for in Catherine's office, keeps students interested. The authors also highlight reemerging diseases, such as tuberculoses and smallpox. As with previous editions, this book takes a "body systems" organization. Students are exposed to the unknown, the world of the microbes, through the known, and the different parts of their own bodies. And, because art is so important, there is again a multimedia manager with this title, but with more exciting capabilities than ever before. Instructors receive powerful PowerPoint slides for all the illustrations, tables and figures from the text, plus several animations are at your fingertips. ... Read more

Book Description

Regarded as the "Bible" of mammalian embryo manipulation techniques since the 1986 publication of the first edition of Manipulating the Mouse Embryo: A Laboratory Manual, the third edition of this essential laboratory resource has now been completely reorganized, rewritten, and updated by a new cast of authors. The result is a compilation of new, cutting–edge protocols that include embryonic stem cell production and genetic manipulation, mouse chimeras, mouse cloning, assisted reproduction strategies (including intracytoplasmic sperm injection and in vitro fertilization), whole embryo culture systems, electroporation, embryo and gamete cryopreservation and rederivation, and gene expression, as well as more extensive background information on the use of these techniques. The "gold standard" techniques for applying recombinant DNA technology to investigations of mammalian embryonic development included in the first two editions of this book are also updated and recast, as is the summary of the current state of understanding of mouse development at the molecular level. This book is the premier authoritative and comprehensive source of technical and theoretical guidance for mouse developmental biologists and geneticists and is an essential resource for newcomers to these fields. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Liver Cleansing Diet
This book and diet was great. It made us realize how much processed foods we eat that are loaded with preservatives, additives and injected with hormones (meats and eggs). My husband lost 22lbs. This weight came off at the end of the diet. We found it hard to revert back to eating like did before the diet. We still continue to eat healthy. We feel so much more energetic. This book has given us healthy way of eating and most likely increasing years to our lives. Anyone can benefit from this book even if you do not follow the diet 100%. Anyone can try the diet at least 50 - 70% and see and feel results.

5-0 out of 5 stars A sensible plan for eating
Once people understand the principles of eating well (healthily) then it is a very easy 'diet' to stick to. You DO feel better, you DO have more energy, and you DEFINITELY look better. I had to go on this diet for my health, and not because of my liver, but I had two heamatoma (blood clots) on my brain and after reading about my problem it was obvious that certain foods would aid in my recovery whilst others would not. The liver cleansing diet was exactly it. It hepled being home from work for three months, but once in the routine, it is easy. The bloodclots disappeared and I lost 8 kgs. (17.6 pounds) Yes, I needed to lose weight but I was not obese. And I wasn't even sticking to the diet to the 'T'. But certainly improved my eating habits. If you are like me and feel sick after ingesting foods that are not balanced then this is something to read. I actually ate about four times as much as I normally do, and still lost all that weight, my skin looks fresh, and my eyes have a healthy glow. As far as literature goes, this is not great, however it makes you understand why your body functions in certain ways, and exactly why you can improve your health/lose weight by eating correctly. This is a great help. I gave it five stars as it acheives what is is meant to. By understanding the functions of the liver and how this relate to general health is really important.

she said you both have CANDIDA OVERGROWTH read this book to clean up the mess.Ihave taken my kid to several clincs, hospitals and doctors, none were able to give that correct diagnosis that all my family has been suffering. this book helped us recover our health and know better about our food and ourselves.

The good thing about this book is that it eventually groups all of that over the counter liver help advice in one place. However it does take eight chapters to get to it. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Gold Standard.
This is a rather long review of the 3rd Edition.

Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy has been considered the standard against which other atlases are compared. It really needs no introduction, so i'll just speak of the pros and cons of this edition compared to other atlases as well as to previous editions.

---Pros compared to other Atlases---

1. Drawings are in vivid "unrealistic" colors. This is in contrast to Grant's atlas, which takes a more "life-like" color scheme. I call this a pro for Netter because it improves contrast and greatly helps in finding and remembering the location of structures. McMinn's is a photographic atlas of dissections, which is great for the lab, but does not nearly cover the content that Netter does. I also find photographs harder to study from.

2. This is first and foremost, an Atlas. There are about 600 pages crammed with drawings. There is virtually no text apart from the labels. The illustrations are generally better, clearer, larger, higher quality, and more plentiful (showing many sections of the same area) than other atlases.

3. Labels galore. Initially some pages may seem intimidating because of the enourmous amount of labelling, but once you get used to it- it's really much better than not enough labels (ie. Grant's). Example: Much easier to find "Pharyngeal Recess" in Netter than Grant's.

---Cons as compared to other Atlases---

1. Expensive. Well, you get what you pay for. It's also gotten more expensive lately for this 3rd edition, very unfortunate. ICON publishing may have raised the price after they took over from Novartis.

2. Sometimes I wish I didn't have to carry two anatomy books: one for text and one for pictures. Grant's is better in this regard as it has "just enough" text to explain the drawings. As I said above, Netter doesn't

---Compared to Previous Editions---

A couple things are new in this edition. And only a couple.

1. About 8 "surface anatomy" plates at the start of every section done by a different artist. Quite good.

2. New Xray, CT, MRI, etc. plates showing normal radiographic appearance. They're okay I guess, but really useless if you have a dedicated radiology text/atlas.

3. Some labels and drawings were corrected to reflect current knowledge. The index has been significantly improved and expanded.

4. New version 3.0 Interactive Atlas of Human Anatomy CDROM. Thank god. Finally they've left the medeival times and adopted 1024x768 res and higher quality pictures. The version 2.0 CD had an absurd and useless 640x480. This CDROM is now natively MAC/PC compatible, finally! (btw. Macs rock)

---Three Options---

It comes in 3 formats:
1. Soft-cover only. ISBN 1929007116 ($68.95)
2. Student Combo ISBN 1929007159 ($99.95): Soft-cover + _STUDENT_ edition of v3.0 Interactive Atlas of Human Anatomy. There is a mistake on Amazon.com in this listing: The student-combo is NOT hardcover. I confirmed this with ICON Publishing and have reported it to Amazon.
3. Hard-cover + v3.0 Interactive Atlas of Human Anatomy ISBN 1929007213 ($129.95)

I thought the Student CD-ROM would be a cut-down version of the full thing. It is NOT. The Student version is the full v3.0 PLUS 250 case-based USMLE style questions and Clinical Correlates. The CD-ROM is clearly improved over the previous versions, but owners of the text may not find any additional benefit as it is almost a straight rip from the text.

Please note. The hardcover and the CD-ROM are not available for individual purchase. They are only available in the 3 options listed above.

---Conclusion---

Owners of the 2nd edition won't find much new in this version. The hefty price is definately not worth an upgrade. However, for first time atlas buyers - this is clearly still the gold standard. I recommend buying the 99$ Student Combo version w/ v3.0 Student CD-Rom if you can afford it (since you can't buy the CD-ROM separately), otherwise go with the Atlas alone. The hard-cover is way too pricey for most students, and the exclusion of the USMLE questions further indicates that it's being marketed as a "Collectors Item" for graduates.

Cheers.
