5-0 out of 5 stars Another fantastic book by Dr. Stoelting!
I must agree with Dr. Alqasaim; this book is excellent. Diagrams are well-done, as are the chapters - en tota.

The book has two distinct sections. The first half of the book is dedicated to the subject of pharmachology, and the second, physiology. This is not a large broad-based text.

Additionally, this is not a book to take the place of the old basic science "stand-by's" like Goodman & Gilman's, or Guyton. However, this book is highly useful for review in those aforesaid subjects, as related to the practice of Anesthesiology.

Absolutely well thought-out and executed.

A must-have for your home/office medical library.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Basic Information
I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of this book, as I have high expectations of a book from Dr. Stoelting. However, I found that this book contains only basic information. It is good for a quick reference, but if you are looking for in-depth information about a specific topic, you will have to look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eat Right for Your Blood Type by Dr. D'Adamo
This is a top medical reference in the alternative medicinal
area. The book discusses dietary implications based upon blood
types. For instance, Type A is the agrarian which is comfortable with grains and livestock. Blood type B people require a
balanced diet of meat and dairy. (B-Antigen) Type AB is the
modern man with an inherited tolerance of AB with enhanced
abilities to manufacture more antibodies. (A & B antigen)
The blood type is key to the immune system. Blood type 0
persons have no antigens. (Anti-A and Anti-B antibodies)
Type B people may have milk ; whereas, Type A people tend
to have systems which agglutinate and reject it.

The author mentions an Indican urine scale for bowel
putrification; wherein, the liver and intestines do not
metabolize proteins. Instead; they produce indols- toxic
byproducts on the Indican Scale. Foods with toxic Indicans
should be avoided. i.e. Bologna which magnifies nitrites

Lactin activity inflames the intestines, causes bloating and
slows food metabolism. Blood type O discourages the
metabolism of animal protein. This type person needs lean and chemical - free meat, fish and chicken. Wheat gluten slows the
metabolism and interferes with insulin efficiency.
Kelp, seafood, liver, kale, spinach, brocolli and red meat
are ideal for metabolism and weight loss/stabilization.
Bacon, ham, pork, American cheese, cheddar and ice cream
should be minimized. Soy may be utilized as a good alternate
to the dairy group. Flax oil and olive oil are beneficial.
Corn oil and peanut oil should be avoided. Type B persons
have stronger immune systems and may eat meat, green veggies,
eggs, liver, licorace tea and ginger. Type AB persons benefit
from TOFU, dairy , green veggies and millet.

Persons with sinusitis and Type B should avoid fenugreek.
Type O persons should avoid alfalfa. Type B persons react
badly to vaccines. Type A persons should avoid cayenne due
to potential nausea. Type O and B should avoid aloe vera juice.

This book contains a wealth of important dietary material.
It should be read carefully. The contents should be placed
in a daily diary for maximum benefit and systematic
measurement of progress. The book is worth the price.
I find the information content of this book nowhere else.
For this reason alone, the book should be purchased and
read carefully.

5-0 out of 5 stars More scientifically oriented than Eat Right...
I admit it: I was suspicious of this diet. Before examining this book, I thought the diet sounded very "fad-like" (and I remain wholly unconvinced by the personality-trait correspondences which are NOT essential to the scientific basis of the diet, just a curiosity). I read negative reviews and their justifications. What I noticed was that most of these reviews sounded a lot like the criticisms leveled at the Atkins diet, a diet that does work for a lot of people (though not all--this book makes clear why) that have since been disproven by double-blind studies. A number noted that d'Adamo's theories weren't backed up by scientific research. Fair enough; this book cites double-blind studies and peer-reviewed research extensively, far more so than the Eat Right and Cook Right books. It also fine-tunes some of the earlier findings. This is ongoing research, something you just don't see in proponents of "fad" diets. D'Adamo has clearly been listing to his critics, and makes every attempt to clarify, fine-tune, and explain how all of this works.

I picked this book--and the diet--up when I browsed it in the store and noted that the medical problems in my family charted almost exactly with the risk factors for blood type. (Blood type correlations with disease have actually been established in peer-reviewed medical journals for a long time, although they aren't much talked about.) I tried the diet. I'm about three weeks in. I've lost 10 pounds, my digestive problems are much improved, I feel more energetic, I don't crave sweets, and -- the most convincing thing for me, because I wasn't looking for it and therefore can't attribute it to the placebo effect -- the morning stiffness I've had for 30 years is gone. It takes at least a week for things to kick in--especially if one has increased intestinal permeability due to intestinal damage--but it does, and for many, myself included, the results are quite profound.

I am not a scientist, nor am I claiming that d'Adamo has everything right. There are some typos in the book, although most misprints are corrected on the website (www.dadamo.com)--hard to find, but worth looking. This is ongoing research, however. D'Adamo also uses that site to update new findings on food compatibility. I think this diet could easily be used in conjunction with others appropriate to type. For instance, type O people will do well with Atkins as long as they cut out the wheat gluten and dairy; people with food allergies may have to limit intake of more foods than he lists. He suggests 70-80% compliance works for most people.

Even the critics suggest that this diet isn't likely to harm anyone. I fully expect some version of this to be exonerated as fully as, if not more than, Atkins. In the meantime, this is a great resource, it's interesting reading even for the healthy, and it is more likely to engage a reader like myself who likes to see detailed scientific justification before jumping into a health plan.

4-0 out of 5 stars 1st diet, last diet?
Having studied, tried, or heard about many "health diets" in the last 35 years, I have always wondered why distinguished health professionals would produce diets that were so contradictory to one other. After all, it's the same human body we're talking about, right?

This book is the most complete in a series of books that answers these questions in a way that passes scientific muster. Of course we are not all the same, but why?

The answer lies in the fact that we each have a unique genetic heritage that dictates how we react to the foods we eat. The basic premise of Dr. D'Adamo's book reflects current thinking on the anthropological origins of our various blood types, which, although similar, are different enough to provoke adverse reactions not only to each other, but to foods that share the chemical markers of those various blood types.

If I can sum up my experience with this book in one sentence, it is this: If thousands of years of history of Homo Sapiens can be seen as a long dance of adaptation between plants and animals, we would all do well to know what our genetic ancestors adapted to, and stick to it. This book will help you do just that!

Individuals new to the study of genetics may find the science in this book to be quite overwhelming, as well as the many pages of footnotes.

I say bring it on! To those who say this is pseudoscience: Give this book a try. You may just discover what foods make you feel, think, and look your best, and discover why at the same time!

2-0 out of 5 stars This book needs more information
This book needs more information and some sort of telephone numbers or contacts to understand what exactly need to be done for certain problems. For example, it recommends some protocols to use, but it is not clear as to we should use all of it at one time or are they optional, meaning can we use any one of them. It will also be helpful if it says where these are available. This book was not as helpful as I expected it to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Volume for All Following the ER4YT Program
This updated 2002 volume supercedes D'Adamo's original title ER4YT as it adds secretor/non-secretor practical information regarding food choices for those who wish to further refine their diet.
Set up in an alphabetically arranged encyclopedia format, the text covers topics that range from the anthropology of the blood types, the history of blood types in medicine, a listing of conditions and diseases with relation to blood type and food choices for all 4 types.
If you are an advocate of the ER4YT program, this book is a must as is the delightful cookbook, 'Cook Right For Your Type'. I have been on the program at the advice of my health care provider for over 2 months and have slimmed down without really dieting all while feeling a heck of a lot better. Referring to this book, the cookbook as well as the original ER4YT help keep you interested --- as boredom resulting from monotonous food choices seems to be one of my number one problems with staying with any program. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This atlas will always be a classic, must buy
I used this atlas in chiropractic school. It's the best atlas, and it's so detailed that I prefer looking at this atlas than any other one. His pictures are as clear as can be. Obviously, Dr. Netter is very talented. I used this book also for my gross anatomy classes along with the following book also sold on amazon.com:
Spinal Anatomy Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
(ISBN: 0971999600)
I got an A in my gross anatomy classes and also an A in my Spinal Anatomy class using both these books. My advice is definitely get both books. I also have friends in medical school who also used these two books and got excellent grades in their gross anatomy classes

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding even for non-medical readers
What a wonderful book. I am not a health-care professional -- just a layman -- but this book is positively captivating. I was able to use Dr. Netter's crystal-clear illustrations to understand a shoulder injury, and while there is virtually no descriptive text other than the labelling of the body parts (it's an atlas, not an anatomy book), there is much here to learn from.

Every medical professional I've spoken with knows Dr. Frank Netter's work, and it's great that he now has a single volume available to the layman.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for students!
A good anatomy atlas is invaluable in clinical practice as well!

I regularly pull out my (previous edition) atlas to (1) teach patients the anatomy involved in various problems ("this is why we need to do XYZ"), AND (2) to localize an injury (dermatome pictures, foot and hand ligaments and muscles)...

I wish this had been available when I was in medical school - it would have made anatomy a lot more accessible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite Good
Love the diagram especially it's all colour coded (but a little bit overwhelming when just start looking at it)
but the sad thing it's a "pure" atlas
the prob with it is that it doesn't hav any text or explanations at all

5-0 out of 5 stars study Osteology from another book
I'm not going to bother telling you how great this book is. To find praises just read the rest of the reviews on this book. I want to mention the problem that I found, which shouldn't stop you from purchasing this book. The only problem I found is that it doesn't concentrate enough on Osteology, particularly on cranium, bones of the hand and bones of the foot.

Pages two to 14 are devoted to the skeleton of the head. The following illustrations are available: anterior, lateral and posterior views of the whole skull; lateral and superior views of a newborn; superior view of horizontal section and lateral view of midsagittal section; calvaria, mandible and temporomandibular joint; radiographs of anteroposterior view, lateral view, and atlantoaxial joint. That's all! It would have been more helpful if this book contained some extra drawings of the cranial bones individually and rotated those bones in such angels (or cross sections) which would have given more details about some parts that aren't visible while viewing the skull as a whole with the bones articulating with each other.

Carpal bones and ligaments are between pages 435-441, and bones of the foot are between 505-510. Here are illustrated: palmar and dorsal views of carpal bones as whole; bones and movements of the writs; ligaments of the wrist, metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal; dorsal, plantar, medial and lateral views of bones of foot as whole; medial, lateral and plantar vies of ligaments and tendons of the foot; 3 radiographs of lateral and anterior views of the ankle, and anteroposterior view of the wrist and the hand. Only one bone, calcaneus, is shown individually and its articulation sites with the other bones of the foot. Only one! The rest of the bones have lost their individual importance.

Having mentioned these minor problems I want to state that this book is, by far, the best resource available for medical school students; it goes hand-in-hand with gross lab. For that reason I have given it five stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Strong text
I have Roitt's Immunology and Janeway's Immunobiology at my disposal as well, but neither presents material as simply and clearly as Kuby Immunology.

The strength of the book is largely in the fantastic illustrations. The generic illustrations supplemented with large blocks of staid text one finds in other immunology books can't even begin to compare. Concentrated study of the figures in this book elucidates many concepts that seem difficult to describe otherwise.

Additionally, the book is divided up into many short chapters on subjects like B and T cell maturation, hypersensitivity, the T-cell receptor, etc. The superb organization is logical and easy to follow, making review and independent study a pleasure.

There's certainly more advanced books on specific topics, but Kuby Immunology is a great starter and basic reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brief yet comprehensive immunology text
"Immunology" by Janis Kuby is one of not many texts available in today's market that can explain complicated concepts of immunology quite nicely. It is a text that is suitable for introductory class as well as a good reference for those who need to brush up their immunology concept in a short period of time. The author explains well in terms of definition and the major functions of each individual cells in the immune system. The concept is also not redundant and repititive. It is an easy-to-read text and the terms used are not too complicated. Another good text to try!

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must have for immunology students
Kuby's book is probably one of the better text books to have if you are an immunology student. Kuby goes into detail that you will not find in other books. It is written for a higher level of understanding than most other text books. It is certainly not a beginners book. I definitely recommend this book to every graduate student studying immunology.

If a more general book is needed, try Abbas' "Cellular and Molecular Immunology". Janeway's "Immunobiology" is geared more for medical students than immunologists.

1-0 out of 5 stars STAY AWAY
This book has got to be one of the most confusing scientific texts I have ever read (in the realm of biology).

If you want to read a good book, try Janeway!

4-0 out of 5 stars THE KUBY DIMENSION
The "kuby Immunology" textbook is valuable for a number of reasons, but the two most prominent ones are: its broad content, and its simplistic outlook. Of course, the authors of this book had beginners in mind when they planned for it, yet, it has got what it takes to arouse the curiosities of experienced learners. I like the moderate details that most of the chapters parade, and the illustrative figures were colourfully done. Each topic consists of an array of smooth-flowing information, which are buttressed by supportive charts and diagrams. Even the otherwise complex immunochemistry topics were dissected in details, and without pain. This textbook will encourage any immuno-phobic beginner, while at the same time provide lifelines for those in need of revision. The only thing that I will say against it is that its price is much higher than that of other comparable texts, (like the "Roitt's Essential Immunology"). ... Read more

Book Description

Developmental Biology, Seventh Edition captures the richness, the intellectual excitement, and the wonder of contemporary developmental biology. It is written primarily for undergraduate biology majors but will be useful for introducing graduate students and medical students to developmental biology. In addition to exploring and synthesizing the organismal, cellular, and molecular aspects of animal development, the Seventh Edition expands its coverage of the medical, environmental, and evolutionary aspects of developmental biology.

FEATURES OF THE SEVENTH EDITION

A completely updated text integrates classical developmental biology with contemporary techniques, including the new material on vertebrate limb cell specification, microarrays, RNA interference, microtubular motors, floxed genes, vertebra formation, neural crest differentiation, neural crest specification, heart cell specification, herbicide-induced gonadal disruptions, pancreatic development, digit determination, tadpole deiodinases, insulin-like growth factors, developmental symbioses, and the developmental origins of feathers, jaws, and teeth during evolution.

A new chapter on medical implications of developmental biology • The news is full of developmental biology and its medical implications. Therapeutic cloning and cancer therapies, in vitro fertilization, congenital anomalies, and teratogenesis are major concerns not only of scientists but of all citizens. Chapter 21, "Medical Implications of Human Development," brings these topics together and discusses:

*the regulation of fertility
*the identification of genetic defects that affect development
*the identification of teratogenic compounds that affect development
*the identification of factors in the maternal environment which may influence the health of the fetus or the adult
*the realization that cancers can be disruptions of developmental regulation and might be cured through developmental processes
*the attempts to cure developmental diseases (including cancers) through detection, cloning, stem cell therapy, and genetic engineering
*the attempt to cure traumatic and degenerative disease through regeneration. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding in-depth intro to developmental biology
I think Scott Gilbert has done an absolutely stupendous job in writing this clearly written, beautifully illustrated and up-to-date exposition of developmental biology. The concluding chapter on evolutionary developmental biology is brief but very well done. The websites associated with the book and the CD provide much additional information. Definitely the premier textbook in this area. Don't tackle it without having taken at least a course in cell biology, and some exposure to biochemistry and genetics would be helpful as well. The last time I read a dev bio textbook was when I was in college 30 years ago; how things have changed!

5-0 out of 5 stars tough but pleasurable
You definitly need some background in cellular and molecular biology and genetics to get a lot out of this book, but in that it represents the direction of developmental biology. This textbook is a worthwhile challenge, and if you have a knowledgable professor (as I do), you're sure to learn a lot (as I am).

4-0 out of 5 stars Mostly about animal biology
This is very comprehensive introductory book in developmental biology starting from 18th century. Author very informed with the latest developments provides information on subjects based on latest developments. Illustrations are very nice, subjects cover all the phases of development, cell partitioning, gastrolization, transcriptional regulation, cell specification, cell to cell interaction, hormonal development and finale. author also has given a chapter on DNA and transcriptions. It is mostly about amphibians and insects and very limited on human. There are also up to date specilizied subjects introduced in frames for more curious minds. A book to be read over and over again as your knowledge in other fields increases.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of developmental biology
Well written and illustrated reference on animal development. This book covers basic principles of developmental biology, and then considers transcriptional regulation, control of development by RNA processing and translational regulation. Cell specification and cellular interactions are then considered. The last chapter considers developmental mechanisms in evolution.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but single author can't handle all
This is a superb textbook which includes a wide scope of current developmental biology. The new version also embraces a modern interactive technology. It's really cool! The text is fluent and consistent because a single author wrote all the chapters. However, its drawback is that the author can't know all the things. This is contrast to other reputated textbooks such as Molecular Biology of the Cell, Principles of Neural Science, etc., written by multiple authors who have expertises in each chapter. Developmental biology has expanded and now covers evolution, plants, and even behavior. I think Dr. Scott Gilbert is a genius. But I can't believe he can handle all of these stuffs. It's time to ask some people to write each chapter. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The book to read for an in-depth background
This book is a very complete overview of molecular biology as applied to human genetics. As someone interested in bioinformatics and computational biology, I read it to get a background in the biology/genetics behind these fields. That being said, I was glad I made the choice of this book as the authors do a fine job of explaining the relevant concepts and biological processes in genetics. In the light of the recent draft of the human genome, this edition of the book is especially timely. That being said, there is a lot of material covered, and to digest all of the terms and processes outlined takes a fair amount of time. The discussion on functional genomics and the post-genome sequencing era was particularly interesting. More could be said on gene sequencing validation as it applies to gene therapies and drug discovery. The most fascinating chapter was the one on genetic manipulation of animals as this is where genetic engineering has had its successful proving ground. Even though this is a science text, a discussion on the ethics of human genetic engineering would be appropriate, given some of the current attitudes about it. My opinion is that these technologies should move ahead with diligence; humankind cannot afford not to do so.

I would highly recommend this book to those who have the time to read through it, as it offers the necessary concepts needed to understand this fascinating area.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a good book in studying human genetics
This is a good book in studying genetics referring human molecular genetics. I can examine myself with it.Whwn you finish reading Molecular biology of the CELL, you can understand genetics. So, this book and the book,Human Molecular genetics, are very helpful in studying genetics.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent text! For undergrad and grad students.
Very comprehensive reading. It sure gives the reader a thorough explanation of the concept. Each chapter provides clear, yet detailed illustrations. Further explanations are given on several key concepts by including "highlights" for a particular topic. Although this book tackles more general knowledge on human genetics, it sure is highly recommended to students or professionals starting to learn Human Genetics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the working student!
Being a graduate student in human genetics I was looking long and hard for a comprehensive text on how and why experiment are done in the lab, and the scientific basis for these experiments. This book is the closest one I have seen that accomplishes all these goals. It is a little light on the theoretical side of genetics (e.g. Mendelian etc); however, there are many other texts out there that can substitute for this flaw, but only a few that do what this one does. I recommend this book for students who are familiar with genetics but need to understand the practical side to it.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good book, but...
This book is enough simple. Chapters regarding the POSITIONAL CLONING, the HYBRIDIZATION, the IMPRINTING and the GENETICAL MAPPAGE are really clear and they represent a big aid for students in the comprehension of these procedures which could be very difficult. But... chapters about GENETICAL DISEAES are too much treated than chapters regarding FORMAL GENETICS, moreover FISICAL MAPPAGE chapter is too detailled in pratical explanation, while the real mappege's concept is not focalized. To conclude a good book, but ... cheers ALESSIO & FEDERICO ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I'll never sell this book back...
Dr. Saladin was my A&P professor at GC&SU. He is a very interesting teacher, and his book is a great resource. This book is coming with me to Physical Therapy school.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best Anatomy book ever
This is the best book I ever seen for a Anatomy and Physiology class. This book have the best picktures and diagrams, well explained material and websitite to die for. I love this book. I would never sell it back. By the way, noone in my class sold it back ( even non-bio majors kept it).

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for Anatomy and Physiology Students
This was our assigned text for our college Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2 classes. This book is quite descriptive and prepares any pre-med or pre-healthcare student for passing their A and P classes. I like how the muscles and nervous system are presented. Knowing the difference between the masseter and frontalis muslces is an example on how this book makes learning this subject easier. I also highly used the following which is on amazon:Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations Volume 1 and Volume 2 by Patrick Leonardi
Also, Key Facts for Anatomy and Physiology by Patrick Leonardi was another helpful book that made test preparation much easier. These last 3 books made studying easier because it showed me the type of questions that were asked on my A and P college exams. My study group and I used these 4 books and we all got A's in our classes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great graphics
Great graphics but the contents are slightly inferior to established Anatomy and Physiology books. Refer to the Interactive CDs and other books. This alone won't ensure you to complete reference but somepart will definitely help.

3-0 out of 5 stars Professor's perspective
Saladin is a pretty good anatomy and physiology text but it contains a number of errors in fact in some areas (e.g., renal), is not well balanced in some areas (e.g., cardiovascular and gastrointestinal) and the pictures are often incorrect (e.g., illustrating epithelial cells as a cube). As a physiologist it appears to me that the physiology is weaker than the anatomy. Many A&P texts contain the same errors, which suggests that these works are not entirely original. I've concluded that I need separate anatomy and physiology texts for my A&P course so that the students will have the benefit of true expertise in each subject area. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Precise
I am a dental student and at my school the Descriptive Anatomy course is infamously difficult. This book has made it much easier to conceptualize human anatomy in 3-dimension as well as demonstrate how each part relates to one another, by region and layer-by-layer. The cadavers have been dissected with superb precision, which provides clarity as to how all of the anatomical structures relate. The photographs are of excellent quality with nonintrusive lines and numbers to easily identify each anatomical part. You get a realistic experience of human anatomy in its true physical form and spatial dimension. This is an excellent book for those who are visual learners as well as those who desire a deeper understanding of human anatomy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Atlas
Rohen provides crystal clear pictures of the human body. This is a must have book to help you get through anatomy and for later reference throughout your medical career! It is particularly helpful for anatomy students because it illustrates precise dissections that can be reviewed on those days/nights when you don't want be in the pungent lab.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is AWESOME
I can not believe the quality of this books or the photos it is full of. I will start medical school next fall and wanted to start learning human anatomy and preparing myself for gross anatomy lab. This book is a great resource and exactly what I was looking for, plus it is used at my school for the MSI lab so I will use it during school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute Best Book for Anatomy
I'm a medical student at the University of Michigan and in my experience this is the best atlas for anatomy. Many of the pictures are taken and arranged just like a typical anatomy dissection, which is perfect for pre-labbing and for studying for practicals. The labels are numbered, which make it ideal for self-quizzing, and the pointers aren't extremely long, which makes it easy to see what is being pointed at. (This is a problem with Netter's which has extremely long lines that are hard to follow.) I do not usually use textbooks (I rely mostly on class notes and online resources), but this atlas has been invaluable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Condition!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great atlas for histology
I found this book to be a great resource for my medical histology class. The pictures helped me to remember key concepts for on my histology lab. The difference between squamous and transitional epithelium can really only be appreciated with the help of this atlas since it is harder to describe it in words. If you really want to know the type of medical histology questions asked on histology medical exams, get the following which is on amazon:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
This study guide helped me to know what type of questions to prepare for on my exams. I give both books 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source for medical students
Excellent photomicrographs with explanations of each. Good review of each subject at each chapter. Can be used alone as a review book.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent atlas
The atlas was excellent and easy to refer to. The text, while usable, is brief and has much more information than was necessary at my undergraduate medical level. I recommend using this as an atlas and using a different text (such as Wheater) for accompanying explanations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What is a Pathology intern?
Practical, helpful, useful book. An excellent, wise choice; you won't be disappointed.
I'm a bit puzzled by a phrase in the previous reviewer's review, however: What is a pathology intern?
As someone who did a year of internal medicine (that is, an internship) before going on to pathology residency, and who now works with pathology residents, I'd like to point out that, as far as I can tell, there is no comparison between the first year in internal medicine, or surgery, or pediatrics (that is, the internship), and the first year of pathology training (called simply the first year of residency).
My internship year was the first year that the term "internship" was officially supposed to be NOT used; rather, we were to be referred to as "first-postgraduate-year" or "level I" residents, or something like that.
Typical foolishness from folks with too much free time.
Guess what: we were still referred to as; were still treated as; still referred to ourselves as; and still worked the ridiculously, unreasonably, brutally long hours of: ...interns.
Anyway, a great book - buy it, and use it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great choice for the Pathology intern
If you are a pathology intern or resident, this book was written just for you. How many of us graduate from medical school and remember basic histology? My guess would be few to none. The book is organized into sections based on organ systems and further subdivided into chapters on specific organs within those systems. It provides a "refresher" about the embryology and gross appearance of a particular organ before launching into the histology, and most people could probably use the review. The color pictures are excellent, and, in my opinion, a MUST for any book detailing histology; black and white photos just don't help me very much at this early stage in my career because they don't convey the details the way color photos do.

My only complaint is that the book has no photos that display the tissues as we actually see them in surgical pathology. For example, when I look at pictures of the histology of the colon, I would like to see a few shots of biopsied tissue rather than tissue that has been nicely sectioned from a colectomy specimen. Often, the tissue received for histology review is just a small fragment that is frequently missing some layers or may be crushed in areas, and it would be beneficial to see photos of the histologic appearance of these tissue fragments. That being said, the book is sometimes helpful in its written descriptions of artifact that may occur during tissue processing, and there are a few photos to go along with these descriptions. Perhaps I'm a little greedy in my desire for more photos, but someone once said that a picture is worth a thousand words!

Don't buy this book to learn pathology; buy it to learn normal histology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too expensive, too voluminous, a bit boring, not great.
It is not easy to write a good histology book. Most histologists are not pathologists, and do not know a bit about real histology. These guys are M.D.'s, but because there many of them, the book is not a great success. E.g. there is no Toker cell, try to find a Merkel cell (not in the index, present in text).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text for path residents
One of the most difficult parts of starting a path residency is knowing what is normal. This book is perfect as a review book and also during the residency.
I have reffered to it many times and feel it is an indispensible part of a pathologists library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Indespensible when you need a comprehensive histology source
This is a well organized text/atlas of histology that includes a modicum of histopathology as well. In my experience as a PGY-3 pathology resident, I don't refer to it very often, but when I do I find it to be indespensible. I have not come across any histology book that is quite so comprehensive. In addition, it serves as a fairly good quality atlas. My only criticism is that I would have liked to see more charts and tables with regard to immunohistochemistry and special stains. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best A&P books for SLPs!
This book was required reading in my graduate program and I am thrilled that it was! I have worked in both acute care as well as school settings and have found this book to be extremely helpful from both ends of the spectrum. An absolutely fantastic desk reference, especially in the acute care setting!

5-0 out of 5 stars A good friend
I knew Mr. Zemlin personally when he lived in Brimson Minnesota. I saw the first edition when he first got it off the press and I was very impressed. Sorry to say that Mr. Zemlin has since passed away in 1998. His knowledge of a&p was far greater than any other person I have ever known.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm glad my professor chose this book for the class
This book is probably the best a&p book for the speech and hearing sciences. It is difficult to read at first, I will not life to you about that, but it is comprehensive, and you will learn a lot. What I like best is the book being divided into systems: respiratory, phonatory, articulatory, etc., because that is a good way to study, in systems, and then you can relate one system to another, and so on. ... The reader-friendly text, section and chapter summaries, and full-color illustrations make the book accessible and easily understandable to students. The Immune System is adapted from Immunobiology by Janeway, Travers & Walport.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best immunology book!
This is the best immunology book out there for the aspiring medical student. Well written, easy read, concise. During the first years of medical school you need sources that deliver information in a quick, organized manner and this book delivers! Don't think about any other immunology textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun to read textbook
I borrowed this book from a prof who was reviewing it for the next time he taught immunology. I used it to gear myself up for two presentations and papers in biochem and cell/molecular biology. Having no experience in immunology but a solid backgroudn in biochem and biology, I found it incredibly easy to read, yet has all the details and mechanisms necessary for one to read and understand research papers in immunology. The picture and graphics are fantastic. It is concise without skipping so much detail as to lose the reader. I wish all my textbooks were written this well. It ties in material from biochemisty and cell biology as well as genetics. It would be a wonderful text for an upper level undergraduate immunology course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than most immunology textbooks
Excellent text that includes the most current information on a subject that is constantly evolving. More easy to read than most immunology texts. Good reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is exepcional book for Immmunoloy

5-0 out of 5 stars Pathophysiology Made EASIER!
The title is a lie. I don't think pathophysiology could ever be incredibly easy, and if it could be this book falls short of the mark. But for the sake of this review, I'm going to lower the mark. Pathophysiology will always require hard work to master, but oftentimes mastery is hindered by the presentation of information. It is in the presentation of pertinent information that Pathophysiology Made Incredibly Easy! excels.
The book contains 13 chapters. Each one focuses on a body system and the disorders affecting that system with additional chapters affecting systemic problems and issues like genetics, immunological disorders, infections, and cancer. The book cannot be and is not exhaustive, but that is not its purpose. The book covers the most often seen and most often discussed diseases. Each, for the most part, is presented in an easy-to-digest manner. Rather than use paragraphs, bullet points, summary graphics, and short sentences highlight the pertinent information. Finally the disease sections end with summaries of the test results that would indicate a particluar malady along with the current common treatments of that disease. There are also many case studies provided to reinforce learning in a practical way.
On the downside, I felt that the some of the cartoons were distracting and irreverent, especially in the context of some of the diseases being discussed. I understand the desire to make learning the diseases fun, but personally I think that irreverence to disease and the diseased may tend to make for unsympathetic care givers. Nevertheless, the book is useful for students of pathophysiology, especially those being exposed to the field for the first time. ... Read more
