Book Description

Atlas of Human Cross-Sectional Anatomy Third Edition

Donald R. Cahill, Ph.D., Matthew J. Orland, M.D., and Gary M. Miller, M.D.

Since its first publication a decade ago, Atlas of Human Cross-Sectional Anatomy has become a standard reference for the interpretation of sectional images obtained with either computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. Now, this Third Edition has been substantially expanded and updated, offering entirely new sections on the major joints, as well as dozens of new images of the head obtained with the latest MR technology.

This atlas presents detailed illustrations of anatomical cross-sections— meticulously drawn and labeled— that are matched with high-quality CT or MR images or actual photographs of cadaver sections. Orientation diagrams appear on the corner of every page and show precisely where the slice was taken as well as the direction from which the slice is being viewed.

The book covers the entire body, featuring:

  • Transverse sections of the thorax, abdomen, and male and female pelves
  • Multiple views of the limbs
  • Sagittal, coronal, and angled orbitomeatal views of the head and neck
  • The spine in sagittal and axial planes
  • The knee and shoulder shown both coronally and sagittally

Revised to reflect emerging trends in the medical imaging field as well as the latest advances in technology, Atlas of Human Cross-Sectional Anatomy, Third Edition is an important resource for anatomists, radiologists, and all practitioners who utilize CT or MR images.

From reviews of the Second Edition:

"Overall, the images are of a high quality in a field (particularly MRI) which is evolving continuously."— European Journal of Nuclear Medicine

"Highly recommended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students of anatomy and for all medical libraries."— Choice

"The large, lucid pictures have labels that are extremely well done. The authors have skillfully used sufficient labels to identify all important structures yet few enough to avoid confusion and clutter."— Mayo Clinic Proceedings

"Overall, this is an excellent atlas, a useful resource for the general radiologist and resident in training."— Radiology ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful resource for any physician & every radiologist
The Cross-sectional Atlas includes radiographic images of every possible cross section as well as a detailed illustrated pen & ink drawing of the same area for cross reference. These two images are together on the same page for easy reference, and the pictures are all of the highest quality-- easy to see. John Wiley & Sons has made a beautiful product. It really is a must for every radiologist or any physician who wants to be able to read MRIs and CTs on their own. (The book contains both MRI and CT image.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro
This is an awesome textbook if you are interested in studying the human brain. It is a good introductory book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Seems like an awful lot to pay for an atlas...
It's a great INTRODUCTORY neuroanatomy text, simple and too the point, with lots of MRI's, gross sections, and cross sections. However, sometimes simplicity tends to increase the complexity of a subject. This especially holds true for neuroanatomy. One simply must learn certain details in order to grasp the big picture. This book is a little lacking in such details. I found the schematics using clay for different brain structures to be confusing (you'll see what I mean if you get the text). Also, it doesn't have a lot of clinical case material for medical students, which would have helped me. If you want a GREAT neuroanatomy text, I recommend Hal Blumenfeld's Neuroanatomy Through Clinical Cases. Keep in mind though that this text is tailored for the medical student in mind.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Atlas
The illustrations contained in this book are excellent. It covers the entire CNS, with great brainstem coverage. Professors use these illustrations often in over-heads and on exams. It's drawn diagrams correspond to actual dissections shown right along side of them. All Pathways and nuclei are clearly shown at a multitude of cross-sections. Truly an outstanding atlas. I gave it only 4 stars because, as a student, I would have liked more expanation behind the illustrations. It's not a great text, but it is the best brain atlas you could buy. Don't bother with any other atlas...buy this one. ... Read more

Principles of Human Anatomy, the market-leading text through its many editions, successfully blends visual and textual elements to illuminate the complexities of human anatomy. A host of carefully crafted pedagogical aids support both the succinctly written narrative as well as the outstanding illustration program. Clinical applications, popular with students, represent a variety of clinical perspectives and provide both relevance and motivation for students as they study. The ninth edition of the text continues to break new ground in a modern day anatomy textbook by offering students a glimpse into the fascinating history of how we have come to know what we do, opportunities to explore structure from diverse perspectives, and insights into the vital contributions that anatomical knowledge brings to the understanding of functions and diagnosis and treatment of disease. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Principles of Human Anatomy
I only wish my teacher had chosen another book. Many times the author goes on rambling on and on where a body part is located from each other and only confuses the reader and never mentions the function of the body part or with only a simple explanation. Like for example: The greater wings of the sphenoid project laterally from the body, forming the anterolateral floor of the cranium. The greater wings also form part of the lateral wall of the skull just anterior to the temporal bone. The lesser wings, which are smaller than the greater wings, form a ridge of bone anterior and superior to the greater wings. They form part of the floor of the cranium and the posterior part of the orbit. And it ends with that. OK, so what I say! Who cares where the part is located, I can see that for myself in the picture; I want to know something relevant with the part. Also, it is very rare when the pictures is on the same page as the body part; you have to keep flipping the pages back and forth to follow the author's description. I just finished his axial skeleton section and my comment is: it is going to be torture reading the author's dry and immaterial way of writing. The author writes as if he is hiding something from you and you have to dig around to get the information. This is the 9th edition and renew every 3 years when there hasn't been a new anatomical part discovered in decades; ploy to keep the money bag flowing. I only hope that in the 10th or perhaps, the 15th edition the author will let us in on what he is trying to convey. Maybe by then Tortora can get it right.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful & Thorough Anatomy Text
I've found this textbook a useful self-study guide. It is set up logically by body system with accessible pronunciations and definitions and with each chapter building on the next. The illustrations are detailed, informative and easy to follow. Each chapter also contains practical information relating to today's medical practices as it pertains to each body system. I was not as impressed with the companion "A Photographic Atlas of the Human Body" as I prefer illustrations over cadaver photos.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very goog Human Anatomy
This is a nice Human Anatomy Book. The Structure of the book based on Systems in human body rather than zones.I believe this gives a better overall view of the human body. Much better than that author gives explanation of every name first its pronounciation and than its meaning in original language.Pictures are mostly schematic, very few photographs of cut bodies, some scanning electron pictures were very nice.Together with this book I recommend Organ and Tissue book with scanning electron pictures. I also liked the littel windows called "clinical Application; that brings you into real world. Overall I liked it very much, it is more than just parts of body. It is with information and applications. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the best book for students
This is the single book that has made me enjoy anatomy. As a second year medical student who previously used Moore's Anatomy, I have to say this book is vastly superior, as another reviewer mentioned.

Here's what you get: the book itself, online access to the book's contents, and 6 months of "big Gray's" online.

The book is very well-organised. It uses the time-tested tradition of segmenting the book by anatomical location (abdomen, pelvis, head & neck, etc.) like most other books. In each section, there is an overview section, and then it delves into each portion(e.g. Pharynx, Larynx, Nasal Cavity, Oral Cavity, etc.). For each of those sections, it then covers the bone/cartilages and ligaments, muscles, blood vessels, lymphatics and nerves in order. The table of contents list things so well, that I use it more than the index, something I cannot say about many other books.

The text is extremely clear, and doesn't use any unnecessary obfuscation. :) However, it is also very precise, meaning that it usually uses the correct anatomical words to describe locations of structures --- make sure you learn that well because it is the way it ought to be done. It also uses the updated Terminologia Anatomica terminologies. So, instead of finding the Eustachian tube, you have to look for the pharyngotympanic tube. This is both good and bad though, as your school might still not use the correct terms. Most of the time they do include the alternative names (ligament of Trietz, Sphincter of Oddi, etc.) for reference, but not always, as in the case of the Eustachian tube.

There are also many tables and figures. Muscles are always presented in both the text and tables to summarise their actions, origin, insertion, etc.. The figures are all very clear, and large with some taking up the whole page with clear labels. Most of the time, everything referred to in the text is also found on the figures (referenced by the text, or in the pages around that topic). This is not true for many other anatomy books, forcing the students to flip all over the books to get a clearer picture (especially if the index doesn't work, like in Moore's!) This can still be further improved in future editions, but as it is, I am satisfied (a big improvement over other texts I have used).

And yes, the index is very well organised, and indicates the pages with figures for the topic. I have yet to fail to find figures in the book using the index.

There are also good clinical discussions, questions, and also radiographic pictures (x-rays, ultrasound, CT, MRI).

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Anatomy Text
I bought this book to review my gross anatomy. After looking at several other anatomy texts and atlases, this one stood out from the rest for its clarity and completeness. It is vastly superior to Moore's Clinically Oriented Anatomy and presents enough unique views of anatomy to enhance any atlas one might use.Although I wouldn't necessarily recommend a text this large for first year medical students, anyone with a particular interest in surgery or anatomy would find it a very worthwhile addition to their library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Richard Tibbitts illustrations are the best anywhere
The illustrations by world renowned medical illustrator Richard Tibbitts will more than justify the price of this book. Even for those who have no interest in reading the text, they should consider the book for the beautiful and thoughtful artwork from a master of the craft who can truly tell a story of anatomy with his insightful and clear vision.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best anatomy book you can buy!
This is a concise version of the grandfather of all anatomy books, the famous Gray's anatomy. Perfect for biomedical students of all disciplines it has the best diagrams available in full, rich colour. Organised according to region, and cross referenced to system, it has many clinically related text boxes linking the anatomy to a clinical pathology/condition.

Well written and easy to understand. An easy 10/10. I totally recommend it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Kinesiology Textbook for Joint Mechanics!
As an Instructor of Musculoskeletal anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology classes, Chiropractor, and author of books on the musculoskeletal system, I buy and read most every book published on the subject of kinesiology. Donald Neumann's book on Kinesiology is hands-down the absolute best kinesiology textbook out for joint mechanics. His book is clearly written in a straight-forward manner that makes it accessible to most anyone and yet it is also the most thorough book on this subject. Further, Elisabeth Rowan's illustrations are the best I have ever seen in a kinesiology text; they are sharp and clear, enabling 3-Dimensional movement to be easily visualized on a 2-Dimensional page. I believe that this book is a must for any student of the musculoskeletal system!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, very easy-to-read, and EVERY woman should!
Dr. Isaacs' book will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about hormones, possible symptoms of imbalances (including overweight), and how to balance your hormones and maximize your metabolism using simple dietary suggestions - all in a very easy-to-read style.

For example, if you are experiencing hyperandrogenism (a symptom of polycystic ovarian syndrome), this book will explain it to you in simple terms. Or, if you have diabetes or insulin resistance, Dr. Isaacs will clearly explain what is happening inside your body, in a way that is easy to understand. If you have hypothyroid or hyperthyroid, Dr. Isaacs tells you what's going on and what to do about it.

It includes information on hormones, metabolism, insulin, the "glycemic index", androgen disorders, the thyroid hormone, cortisol, stress, the adrenal gland, the growth hormone, hunger hormones, and more. Many of the issues he discusses seem to go together, like pieces of a giant puzzle, but he makes it very easy to follow along. And ... this is the best part ... Dr. Isaacs suggests simple ways to help balance your hormones once and for all!

The letters after Scott Isaacs' name are: M.D., F.A.C.P., and F.A.C.E. Those letters represent: M.D. - Doctor of Medicine, F.A.C.P. - Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and F.A.C.E. - Fellow, American College of Endocrinology. Endocrinology is the study of the endocrine gland, hormones, and metabolism. The criteria for obtaining the F.A.C.E. designation can be found at: http://www.aace.com/college/criteria.php

The criteria require that the doctor be actively practicing and be a member in good standing for at least one year ... in addition to other requirements. In other words, Dr. Isaacs is a licensed medical doctor, who is actively practicing in the specialty area of endocrinology, which is the study of hormones and metabolism. These credentials make him a fine expert to learn from.

This book is so easy-to-read, and contains such important information to our overall health, that EVERY woman should read it! If you are considering this book, buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read !
This book is GREAT in the fact that it is very conversational. Dr. Scott Isaacs is a very intelligent and informative doctor with the special gift of explaining complicated diseases (or syndromes) in a very easy-to-read fashion. It is a must-read for everyone, even if you are not sick! He explains the medical aspects of the disease as well as gives suggestions as to foods you can eat (or stay away from) that specifically help (or aggrevate) the condition. He explains how your hormones have control of your entire body and with small changes in these levels, comes BIG problems. I was amazed to learn the connections between your everyday health, metabolism, and hormones. It was wonderfully enlightening! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Prequel" of Epic Proportions
First there was the engaging saga of "Bacillus Subtilis and Other Gram-Positive Bacteria" that hit the bookshelves and captivated readers worldwide. It reveals the origins and transformation of an innocent coliform, Ecoli, who just wanted to gain sustenance from its gutter lifestyle and be leftalone.I personally found it sorrowful how it became ripped from its sewerhome and was probed, analyzed, and mutated into the monster of researchliterature that it became. It becomes obvious that it was BECAUSE of thedominance ofEcoli, and its more virulent cousin, Styphi, that Bacillusbecame the rebel hero of bacteria that would wrench the eyes and hearts ofscientists away from the Gram-Negative Empire and would bring balance tobacteriology. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Starting Point In Clinical Microbiology
I own this book plus buying a copy for the lab, the book is not as thorough as the manual of clinincal microbiology by the ASM and edited by Murray. But is thorough enough for most routine bench work and is not as bulky as Murray. Murray and or Bergeys would be required for the more difficult organisms, but for everything else, or the student studying diagnostic Clinical microbiology I would rate this book highly.

This edition of Bailey & Scott is the best so far. The tables included in each chapter are well organized. They present the data in an easy to look up manner. Information on individual organisms is better organized in contrast to earlier editions. One complaint is that older names and test procedures are not included. Book Description

Anatomy ColoringWorkbook

The human body is wondrously complex, with 700 muscles, 206 bones, and countless cells and tissues. Studying and remembering all of them can be overwhelming.

The Anatomy Coloring Workbook gives you a clear and concise understanding of anatomy. The interactive approach to learning anatomy through coloring takes less time than memorizing from textbooks and flashcards. The coloring process thoroughly fixes anatomical concepts in your mind, and when you need to recall the material, you’ll be able to visualize the body structures.

The diagrams and plates in the Anatomy Coloring Workbook have been created electronically, to give you a sharp, precise rendering of anatomical structures. We fully explain the concepts behind each coloring lesson to make the learning experience complete. We include an introductory section on anatomical terminology to get you started, coloring suggestions to assist you, and labels for easy identification and reference.

This book is an invaluable resource for students of anatomy, physiology, biology, psychology, nursing, medical technology, health administration, fitness education, nutrition, art, and more.

Medical practitioners, dentists and dental hygienists, physical and occupational therapists, educators, and professionals in scores of other fields will also find directed coloring a helpful means of review.

The 125 plates in the book are organized into the following sections:

Introduction to Anatomy
The Skeletal System
The Muscular System
The Nervous System
The Endocrine System
The Circulatory System

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful learning aid for A and P students
My study group and I used this book for our anatomy and physiology class in our undergrad. We are all visual learners and found it quite useful for learning the various muscles, bones
and organs in the body. We are found the following very helpful which is also on amazon:
Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations (Volume 1) and (Volume 2)
The last two books showed us the type of questions to prepare for on our midterm and final exams. It is worth the money. It helped us all pass the class with ease. I give these 3 books my highest recommendations.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
I used to use the Kapit with my students. It's still a fine book, but the images in this book are 10 times better, and the text is more readable. A beautifully designed guide - and for a lot less money. ... Read more

Book Description

The first edition of this book was highly acclaimed and became the definitive text in the area. Its successor has been substantially enlarged, revised and improved. New chapters cover the provision and economics of palliative care, measurement of pain and other symptoms, principles of drug use, interventional radiology, asthenia, pruritus and sweating, pediatric palliative care, AIDS in children, and multiprofessional education. A number of chapters have been completely or substantially re-written. Over 100 European and North American experts contribute to this edition, many for the first time.

The Textbook's wide-ranging approach details every aspect of palliative care--physical, emotional, social and spiritual--in both research and practice. Sections examine the scientific principles underlying the subject, and offer a thorough review of the current status of research in the field. Besides emphasizing the emotional and psychological needs of the dying, the book considers the suffering of the family and discusses bereavement, support, the involvement of relatives, and the issue of domiciliary care. Other chapters cover the ethical aspects of care, rehabilitation, and the education and training of health professionals. Although based on practice in the developed world, the growing relevance of palliative care in the developing world is stressed throughout. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Oxford Textbook of Palliative Medicine 3e
It's here. What we've all been waiting for. The third edition of the OTPM. And it does not disappoint.

This edition looks to be largely re-written, not just up-dated, and there are many new contributors. There is a new section on the palliation of non-malignant disease, which I think will be particularly useful for the majority of us who deal primarily with advanced cancer. New chapters deal with the role of each of the allied health professionals who make up the multidisciplinary team. There are also new chapters on the principles of evidence-based medicine and on learning communication skills, both of which I think are particularly welcome.

It is not possible to review each section of what is a very large textbook. Overall, it provides good coverage of the whole field of palliative medicine. Duplication, as may occur in any multi-authored text, has been kept to a minimum. Although it has about the same number of pages, the use of a smaller (but very legible) font gives the impression that this edition is considerably larger and has a lot more information than the previous one. I have to declare that I wrote the chapter on HIV/AIDS in Adults, about which nothing more will be said, but had nothing else to do with the production of this book.

Is it up to date? I browsed a few areas where practice has changed in the last few years and found good coverage for selective COX-2 inhibitors, NMDA receptor antagonists and interventional radiology, although the usefulness of low molecular weight heparins in palliative care has not been emphasized.

Is it worth it? The book is not cheap by anybody's standards. But the answer has to be yes because this book will remain the gold standard reference in palliative medicine for the next few years at least. The editors are to be congratulated on the successful completion of what is a very impressive reference. And all who work in palliative medicine owe a debt of gratitude to Derek Doyle, who has now pioneered this book through three editions.

4-0 out of 5 stars All you need to know is here
This is a one stop book. Renal physiology and Acid-Base Balance is explained in detail and in simple terms. Author provides various scenarios for each condition. Implications of each change in renal physiology is described in many occasions.book is divided into four section and after brief introduction major part of the book is about regulation of water and electrolyte and best part is the final chapter where acid-base disorders are explained with physiologic concepts. Relatively thick book on a single subject and therefore coverage is very good yet it is it is very easy to read and understand.Another good part is that each chapter has few questions and you can check yourself with answers provided at the end of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review of How the Kidney Works
This book describes renal physiology and the regulation of water and electrolyte balance and then reviews various disorders of the above. The author takes a difficult subject and puts it into simple terms and gives excellent examples of the clinical implication of various renal physiologic mechanisms. There are several problems and solutions for each disorder, and these are also helpful in solidifying knowledge. The detail and physiology probably make this book most suitable for clinical and research fellows in nephrology but medical students and residents would find it useful as well. The price makes the book a real value given the amount of excellent information the book contains. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Obnoxious Clown Man writes book!
This man likes to laugh at his own jokes! Do you want to be TAUGHT by a BOOK by a man that laughs at his own JOKES! He plays the banjo! There was a picture of him playing banjo, which happened to be the most interesting thing in the book, but he removed it, so be sure to get an old version.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding professor
I took the Comparative Biochemistry at UVa taught by Prof. Garrett and it was the best class I took at UVa. He had an amazing way of organizing lectures so that I kept wanting to learn more and more as the hour went by. I didn't even have to take a lot of notes, because he made things clear and it all sunk in. I was really inspired to do a good job on our research papers and really learned alot because of the types of things he taught us to think about. I was a terrible student, had awful grades especially in chemistry and biology but this class really stuck out. Oh, and I got an A too. Unlike alot of professors, he didn't have a loud or condescending tone. While I didn't pursue biochemistry any further, I sometimes wonder what would have happened if I had because he was such a great professor and I enjoyed his class so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars All in all, most suitable for a general audience
Undergraduate biochem at my school is taught by the biochem department (not surprising). However, as a result, we have all sorts of people taking the course from prospective chemists (me) to premeds and general bio sci majors. So the dept. uses this book and it's probably the best compromise out there. Voet and Voet would be perfect if the course was taught exclusively for chemists, Stryer if the course was loaded up with premeds (horrifying thought, I know :) ) But Garrett and Grisham have managed to write a rather well balanced text (one is in UVA's bio dept., the other UVA's chem dept) with plenty of both chemical insight and medical relevance. Based on (I'm sure) similar experiences they've had teaching biochem to a mixed audience, and knowing that most undergrad biochem courses tend to be taught to similar groups of students nationwide, this is the best book for a case like that. (However, I'm getting Voet and Voet as a reference for me personally one of these days.)

5-0 out of 5 stars A Well Written Reference
This book provided invaluable reference information to me for a one year course in biochemistry. It was designed in a manner so that the class or student can learn topics in depth or get a broad overview of the subject. It also has lots of interesting historical perspectives and useful graphics. I am definately keeping this book for a reference as I continue my studies.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent improvement from the first edition
I have Biochemistry texts by Garrett and Grisham in both editions. First,I found the 1st edition a very bad text since the fiugures and language presented in the text were extremely vague and unclear. However, the 2nd edition seems to be much better than the first version. The context is clear, organization great, pictures are perfect. The idea that authors combine two books in one (i.e biochemistry and Cell biology approach) is nice, making this book become one of the good texts to have on the shelf. I am sure that anyone who wants to learn more about biochemistry, this book can be a good tool. ... Read more
