5-0 out of 5 stars Must buy, outstanding textbook
This book is simply excellent. It has great pictures and it helped my with my histology class in med school. It is easy to read and it makes histology a lot more interesting and fun to learn. It also cut some of my study time since it is not filled with unnecessay information---it gets right to the point. My study group and I also used the following that is also on amazon:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers ISBN: 0971999686
The second book was quite revealing with the kind of questions we saw on our histology exams. We all got B's and A's after using both these books. In addition, both these books helped me on the USLME 1. I would definietly get these books.

3-0 out of 5 stars This has the potential to be a fine book....
...just as soon as it comes out in the 3rd edition, assuming that the authors get a substantial amount of in-depth reviewing help in getting the bugs ironed out of it before then.

I've been using this book for a Microanatomy course in medical school. I liked this book initially, but there have been more than a couple of occasions where I've had to go to other sources for explanations of material that should have been clearer in the text. Also, based on errors and contradictions with other sources I've found so far, I've since come to believe that one can believe maybe 96-98% of the information printed in it. Perhaps the authors just 'winged it' now and then or maybe one or the other had senior moments (Hiatt is retired) and 'remembered' a few too many details to be true which unfortunately aren't. Regardless, if you're not already conversant with the subject and aren't comparing what you read here to what you glean elsewhere, good luck in figuring out what's accurate and what isn't.

It's still too early for me to have a really strong opinion of the competition, but based on G&H's relatively poor treatment of odontogenesis (tooth development), I was inspired to pick up the excellent-looking new (4th) edition of Ross, Kaye, and Pawlina's "Histology - A Text And Atlas". Their diagrams and coverage (for this subject area at least) are also not only more readable, but also more comprehensive. (This is particularly ironic, given that Gartner and Hiatt both hail from a school of dentistry.) Also, unlike G&H's text, Ross et al's latest effort *is* usable as a histology atlas (in my non-expert opinion at least), which helps greatly when one needs to know not only how things work but also what they look like. Given that the Ross book is also well written, G&H's effort is left with precious little to recommend it. Admittedly this is but one subject area among many so it's too early to say for sure, but for now at least Ross et al seem to have produced the clear winner.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Text for Beginners
Coming from a social science background rather than one in biology, I found this book a lifesaver first year. The photos are great and the diagrams extremely helpful. I replaced the required Junquira, which I found unreadable, with Gartner and Hiatt!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Textbook of Histology
This book is really one of the best textbooks of Histology I have ever seen and if you exclude (NMS Histology,concise and not well illustrated ) ,you won't find (as a medical student) such a comprehensive,organised,well illustrated textbook of Histology.However,you will need to buy a good atlas of Histology along with the book simply because the book is not an atlas. One of the features that I liked very much in the book is the simple coloured hand-drawn pictures which simplify the real microscopic slides very much and make easier to understand and draw. Another feature is that the book along with the histology text has also physiology, gross anatomy notes as well as clinical correlations in an integrated way so that you do not need to refer to other textbooks in Anatomy and physiology to correlate it with histology text. During my histology course , I did not need to refer any other book in histology (except to NMS Histology to some bits which I did not find detailed info about it in the book).It is really good book and I recommend to you as a textbook and reference (Especially if your course involves detailed knowledge about the material).

2-0 out of 5 stars A horrible beginner's text.
The micrographs and illustrations are lush and colorful but do not correlate with the text at all. It's as if Gartner and Hiatt have adapted the better illustrations from previously used textbooks. The information is dense but only useful if you've already been introduced to the subject. If you are new to histology, you will be hopelessly confused. Furthermore, the figures will be useless because they are not labelled and not explained in the text. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Introductory Text for General Education
Q> How do you get non-majors interested in biology?
A> Talk about something that's interesting and relevant to them.
This is why we decided to start a Human Health and Disease course for non-biology / non-health science majors. Our philosophy was to lay down the minimum foundation that enabled students to understand most diseases. The problem is finding a text book to support such a course. That's why I'm really grateful to have this text book. I reviewed a dozen others before this and was looking at having to develop my own.
However, it's not perfect. It could be more balanced. For example, why does a student at this level need to know the bones of the skull? I'd also like to have a lab book to go with it, preferrably one that taught some of the concepts in that setting to make lecture less intense for non-majors. Still, developing a lab text for to go with this product is a lot less than I was looking at before, so - Thanks! ... Read more

Book Description

Oxford University Press is proud to present GENES VII--the latest edition of Benjamin Lewin's best-selling textbook. This authoritative work provides an integrated account of the structure and function of genes and incorporates all the latest research in the field.

THE MOST SIGNIFICANT REORGANIZATION TO DATE

The power of direct analysis of the genome has made a significant difference in the approach of GENES VII. In a departure from previous editions, which started with a traditional analysis of formal genetics, the new edition begins with the molecular properties of the gene itself. The text is now reorganized to begin with the concept of genes as a segment of DNA coding for protein, and then proceeds directly to the characterization of the genome in terms of its content of genes.

INTEGRATED APPROACH

GENES VII first explains the structure and function of the gene as a means to revealing the operation of the genome as a whole, and offers an integrated approach to prokaryotes and eukaryotes. The gene is considered from all aspects, including:

* Basic forms

* The numbers and relationships among genes in a genome

* Their packaging into chromosomes

* The process of gene expression from transcription through translation

* The reproduction and safeguarding of the gene structure

* Aspects of the overall circuitry through which genotype determines phenotype

STREAMLINED, FULL-COLOR DESIGN

GENES VII has been considerably restructured and reorganized to highlight the latest research and technology. It contains more that 800 full color illustrations that are extremely useful in teaching the key concepts presented in the book.

GENES VII CONTAINS NEW, GROUNDBREAKING INFORMATION ON:

* New technologies that count and compare expressed genes

* Accessory proteins (chaperones)

* The role of the proteasome

* Licensing

* Reverse translocation

* Connections between repair and recombination systems and human diseases

* Connections between the structure of chromosomal material and control of gene expression in eukaryotes

* The process of X chromosome inactivation

* Imprinting

* Control of gene expression by epigenetic changes

* The enzymatic activities that control chromatin structure and affect the regulatory process

* Archeael enzymes

* The mechanism of RNA editing in lower eukaryotes

* The role of RAG genes

* Interactions within and between pathways

* The use of protein degradation to control passage through the cell cycle

* Programmed cell death

* Telomerase and its role in carcinogenesis. And much more! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's earned a spot on my bookshelf
Although many of my college textbooks have been packed away into neat little boxes and shoved into an attic, this one sits on my shelf and will be called into duty in the future. In an ideal world, the author would have written just for me: reordered the chapters, gone into greater detail for some topics and less for others, and inserted images that pertained to the level of detail I needed. However, the world isn't ideal. The book comes as close as any text can to meeting the needs of readers who need the book as a fundamental learning aid and as a reference guide. However, although it's jam-packed with information, it's a little tedious reading through the elementary text to get to what you need. Perhaps he needs to split the book into two texts: an Introductory Genes (Green Genes?) and an advanced text. Overall, worth the money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs down from a frustrated professor
Lewin's Genes series has dominated the market in Molecular Biology textbooks ... Unfortunately, its monopoly status seems to have insulated Lewin, his illustrators, and his editors from the corrective influences of a competitive market...so far.

I am in my second year of teaching from this book and I find it very frustrating. Lewin's writing style is unclear, difficult and distracting. Tangential ideas and subjects appear out of nowhere in the middle of chapters for no logical reason. As I write this, I should be preparing my lecture for Chapter 26 (Signal transduction). Why does this chapter start with a discussion of transporters? Later parts contain sentences that are almost unreadable and way too much detail about the alphabet soup of different kinases.

Although it is much better than some earlier editions, Genes VII still contains a variety of major and minor errors, including serious problems in explaining how lagging strand DNA synthesis is coordinated in the replication fork - several experts tell me that the model in figure 13.16 is simply wrong. The holoenyme does not lose one of its catalytic subunits with each cycle of Okazaki fragment synthesis. The clamp simply lets go and the clamp loader grabs the next fragment with a new clamp. I realized this semester that I had been ignoring the book and teaching what I knew from seminars.

Even when the content they describe is basically correct, figures in Genes VII can be astonishingly bad. Homologous recombination is illustrated with DNA strands that are only color coded and where the 5' and 3' ends are not labeled (Chapter 14). Unlabeled spliceosomal proteins change their color codes in the middle of the pathway - transesterification to form the lariat also seems to change U2 into U1 (Figure 22.10).

I am hoping that one of the newer competitors for Genes VII will prove to be a suitable replacement. I am examining Robert Weaver's Molecular Biology - I like what I've read so far - and should get a review copy of T.A. Brown's Genomes soon. ...Disclaimer - I have no financial interest in the success of any of these. All of them are available on Amazon.

By the way, I do have a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology. I'm not an expert in all of the material covered by Genes VII, but I was trained in labs whose work is cited in Genes VII.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best book
In my opinion it is the best book i have partly read by far and every time when i have a free time i intrestingly like to read this book. In fact, i have found it very usefull to undrestand basic meaning of celular and molecular phenomenons and genes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This book is well written and provides an excellent introduction to the subject matter. It's a comprehensive text for anyone who wishes to gain a thorough exposure to the genes, genomes and gene regulation. However, this book does have it's drawbacks. Recent advances in genomics maybe covered on a later textbook. Perfect for an undergraduate or a beginning grad student. I suggest this book as a companion for a more comprehesive text such MBOC by alberts et al. If you are faced with a choice of either alberts or Genes VII, I suggest alberts. For the seasoned molecular biologist I urge you to look elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
This book is useful but if your new to genetics and want a nice reference book that is easy to read I recommend "Concepts of Genetics" by Klug and Cummings. I have the 6th version and even though it is not as popular as Lewin's texts it reads well and has great pictures. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best A & P Study Guide
Do you want an "A" and still have a life? Then buy this book. I've gotten A's from my first two A&P classes because of it.

I have no science background. The assigned textbook is so huge I avoid looking at it as much as possible. Instead, I rely on my lecture notes and Schaum's when ever I can. Yes, there are times I am forced to use my assigned text, but there are plenty of times when Schaum's covers the point without wasting my time, and highlights important concepts as well.

So do yourself a favor and buy this Outline...unless you like the idea of going blind over a 50 pound tome while your social life withers and dies from neglect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise but thorough review of Anatomy and Physiology
This book is great if you don't like reading long textbooks. It's easy to read and makes Anatomy and Physiology more interesting. I was recommended this book from a friend who used this book and another study guide and got over a 90 average. The other two books I highly recommend are the following:
Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (Vol 1) ISBN: 0971999619
Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (Vol 2) ISBN: 0971999627
The last two study guide showed me the kind of questions I saw on my college exams. My friend was right. I used these 3 books and also got an "A" in my college A and P class.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Resource for Applying Your Knowledge
I just completed my first semester of Anatomy and Physiology.

Everyone had told me that "repetition, repetition, repetition" was the key to getting the grade in this class. Our textbook did have a handful of review questions at the end of each chapter and the CD-ROM included also had quizzes to take.

I was doing the questions and quizzes, like everyone else in my class, but kept getting lower than desirable marks on my nearly daily quizzes.

After I bought this book and studied from it, I saw a dramatic increase in my scores. My lab partner was shocked that I had done so much better than her. She is a fast learner and typically gets perfect scores. I told her about this outline, she immediately bought a copy, and together we both finished the course with A's.

I think it is important to test your knowledge by applying it. The more resources, the better. If you are like me, you easily tire at looking at the same pages over and over. This book gave organized summaries and had excellent Q&A's.

At the price of around $12, it is worth the money!

5-0 out of 5 stars FABULOUS! Exactly what you want!
Truly a great find! I use it to review for my midterms and finals with great results. Really feel it has kept my B+ average from sliding. Concise, to the point, and all the best parts of my text book in 10 pages or less, per chapter. Fully solved exercises could be a bit more extensive (only 6-8 multiple choice questions per chapter) but I won't look this gift horse in the mouth. Giving this to my friend who is one quarter behind me, with my full recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Anatomy and Physiology Review Guide
The Schaum's book is an excellent review for anatomy and physiology. The book really kept me focused on the important aspects of anatomy to cover while reading and reviewing my class notes. I would really recommend this book to anyone taking any kind of anatomy and physiology based course. Everything about this book is just wonderful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good quick review
Easily memorizable, great map of pathways, another winner from the ridiculously simple crew!

2-0 out of 5 stars Big disappointment from the "ridiculously simple" series...
I generally like material put out by the "ridiculously simple" series. This text is a dud. The material covered is very shallow. I found the writing tedious and overly simplistic. If you want a good foundation in biochem go with Lehninger's Biochemistry along with Basic Medical Biochemistry by Marks, Marks, and Smith.

I understand that this was not intended to be a detailed biochem text. However, the material here is beyond "simplistic". It is quite insufficient to appraise one with facts and or knowledge.

2-0 out of 5 stars Review
It contains a fairly decent chapter on metabolic diseases, related to biochemistry.Helpful as a possible review, not as a primary study source.

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of time
A too simply and vague way to describe "biochemistryland". May be good for someone but certainly not for medical students preparing for the Boards.

1-0 out of 5 stars content over-simplified and lacking in many areas.
this book, although targetted for medical students, left much out and didn't seem to stress any one thing. i think the author focused more on crafty word choices to discuss biochemistry than he did on choosing the appropriate content. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject!
I was diagnosised with Lupus 27 yrs ago at age 17. Since then, I have literally seen 100's of Drs, most of whom were, to be kind, not very knowledgeble about SLE. This book has been instrumental in getting me the care and treatment that I need. I take it with me to nearly all Drs appointments and have given copies of it to Drs who need the information that it contains to competently treat my illness.

If you're looking for a factual, well written and easy to understand book about Lupus, to either read yourself or to give to family and friends, this is the book you've been looking for.

I had been suffering more than 6 yearsw/almost 30 different doctors all with different misdiagnosises and no relief when I met Dr. Hallegua who isDr. Wallace's partner. In a week I had the blessing of a lupus diagnosis, a Dr who cared and meds that made a world of difference. I highly recomend their books to sufferers of lupus as well as their friends and family. They are the best in their feild, passionate in their work, and if you are not lucky enough to be their patient you can still be lucky enough to read their wise words.great aid in educating loved ones

I was recently diagnosed with lupus and bought this book to try to help me understand what it was I would be facing.If you or someone in your family has this disease, this book will help you understand.I highly recommend having it as a reference.

It does tend toward medical-ese (as opposed to some other "how to live your life" books that are more geared toward the common denominator), so it may take a while to grasp some of the information.

But, it provides a very good overview of what to expect from all the medical tests and symptoms you can expect with the disease. ... Read more

Book Description

Caenorhabditis Elegans has been a popular model organism for biological research for over thirty years and has been used to investigate many aspects of animal development, for example apoptosis, the Hox genes, signal transduction pathways, and the development of the nervous system. It has recently taken on new importance with the publication of the entire genome sequence in 1998.The first chapter gives all the basic information on C. elegans required to use it: it's natural history, anatomy, life cycle, development, and evolution. Information on how to obtain, grow, and maintain C. elegans for use as a model system is given in Chapter 4.Chapters 2 and 3 describe the genome project and show how to use genome sequence information by searching the database for homologues using different search methods and then how to analyse the search data. The next chapter gives the essential practical details of transformation and common uses for the technique. Chapter 6 covers reverse genetics and describes strategies for gene inactivation that are known to work in C elegans: epigenetic inactivation and mutational germ line inactivation. Chapter 7 is designed to help the user analyse phenotype by microscopy and includes Normaski, fluorescence, 4-dimensional, and electron microscopy. Techniques for studying the neurobiology of C. elegans are given in chapter 8. Chapter 9 describes the three commonly used approaches for studying gene expression and Chapter 10 deals with the common methods of molecular biology essential for gene characterization. C. elegans is not the ideal organism for biochemical studies, but chapter 11 describes several procedures for producing biochemically useful quantities of pure tissues. The final chapter is about conventional genetics and details the standard procedures for selfing and crossing; mutagenesis and mutant screening; characterization of mutants; gene mapping; temperature-shift experiments and mosaic analysis.Caenorhabditis Elegans: A Practical Approach will therefore provide all the background information necessary for use of C. elegans as a model system. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended.
Although this book is a bit pricey it is well worth the money. It has wonderful introductory sections that address all aspects of basic developmental biology including a description of development of specific organs, signaling pathways, and relevant molecular processes. By describing how these processes can go awry as a consequence of gene mutation it manages to make clear why an understanding of developmental biology has direct impact on biomedicine. It is densely packed with important information and makes an excellent reference manual. My graduate students loved it! ... Read more

Book Description

This book represents a classic compilation of current knowledge about mouse development and its correlates to research in cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, and neuroscience. Emphasis is placed on the research strategy, experimental design, and critical analysis of the data, disguishing this from other books that only focus on protocols for mouse developmental research. Selected chapters are indexed to electronic databases such as GeneBank, GenBank, Electronic Mouse Atlas, and Transgenic/Knockout, further increasing the utility of this book as a reference.

*Broad-based overview of mouse development from fundamental to specialist levels
*Extensive coverage of a wide range of developmental mutations of the mouse
*Excellent benchmark illustrations of brain, craniofacial, gut and heart development
*In-depth experiment-based assessment of concepts in mammalian development
*Focus on models of specific relevance to human development

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Much About Products
The sparse information in WOUND CARE about caring for wounds and preventing them is superb, but the manual is primarily a catalogue of products. The type of material provided in WOUND CARE can be found in the detail sheets packed with wound care products. I found the book a disappointment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wound Care, A Clinical Guide
This book is an excellent nursing resource for wound care. The opening provides a quick review of wounds and the healing process. It then moves on to proper wound assessment techniques, staging, and measurement. A section is dedicated to describing product types used for the prevention of decubitis ulcers. What I found most helpful in the nursing field was the wound care product descriptions. The book gives a general overview of product types and catagories then procedes to list specific brand name products. Each product is pictured for easier identification. The sizes of each product are listed along with the action, indications, contra-indications, and application/removal methods. This is excellent for product comparison as well as referral. I would suggest this for any nurse interested in wound care. It would also be a great reference book for nursing units that treat various wounds.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much focus on products and not enough on wound care
Received this book as a CEU offering. It seemed 3/4 of the book was on products. In some ways this was helpful as a comparison reference, but in this day of managed care, I can't use all these products. Would have liked more information on wound healing

3-0 out of 5 stars a list of wound care products, not a text on doing woundcare
if you're looking for a comprehensive listing of wound care products (dressings, gels, etc.) then this book is a good resource. my only complaint is that it is misleadingly titled. only a brief, introductory section of the book actually discusses wound care, and it does it in such a short space that it is useless to the beginner (because it lacks detail and specificity) and useless to the experienced clinician (because it lacks in-depth analysis and meaningful references). it certainly does list just about every single wound product you can mention, though. it should have been titled "the wound care product PDR"

5-0 out of 5 stars Product information is wonderful
I am a wound care specialist, in the home care setting, this book has been very beneficial . I use this book as a PDR for wound care products. This book is also a wonderful teaching/ educational aide to those not familer w/ wound care products. ... Read more
