Book Description

How can you make the best textbook in the field of sport and exercise physiology better? Leave it to authors Jack Wilmore and David Costill, two of the field’s most respected scholars, to do so. The thoroughly revised second edition of Physiology of Sport and Exercise redefines the discipline’s standard for textbooks.

Improved features
Here’s what makes Physiology of Sport and Exercise an even better resource:

· A better organization of the field’s subject matter
· Dynamic graphic presentations—featuring four-color photographs, graphs, and illustrations—that complement the text and encourage a deeper understanding
· Clarity of language and reader-friendly presentation of information including color-coded chapters, chapter outlines, key terms and points, summary boxes, study questions, glossary and index
· Thoroughly updated information based on the latest research findings
· A new student study guide that features active learning exercises
· Metric as well as imperial measurements

Supporting materials
The new edition includes dramatically improved and expanded supporting ancillary materials to help instructors teach the course.

The text’s supporting materials include the following:

· An electronic Instructor Guide new to this edition, free with course adoptions
· A revised and improved Test Bank, free with course adoptions
· A much expanded Graphics Package for PowerPoint or slide presentations, free with course adoptions

Plus, instructors have the added convenience of being able to travel to a website to retrieve some of the course’s ancillary materials.

Organization of the text
The logical order of the text has been retained, and it provides a comprehensive overview of the field without being overwhelming. Wilmore and Costill thoroughly explain all concepts so students can comprehend rather than simply memorize. The text masterfully provides a solid foundation of basic physiology from which to better interpret and understand sport and exercise physiology.

In Parts I through III, the authors review the major body systems and examine the body's acute response to exercise and its chronic response to training. In Part IV, students learn how the environment affects these responses. Part V examines various approaches used to optimize performance. Part VI focuses on unique concerns of special populations involved in physical activity, and Part VII examines the importance of physical activity to lifelong health.

Updated information
The second edition has been updated to include current information regarding the following:
· Structure and compartmentalization of myofibrils and the sliding filament theory
· Neuromuscular factors and individual muscle fiber hypertrophy with resistance training
· Ergogenic aids including L-tryphtophan, branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), L-carnitine, creatine, chromium, and glycerol
· Recent results from longitudinal studies of older athletes
· And much more!

Now you can offer your students the very best textbook available for bringing the field of sport and exercise physiology to life. Physiology of Sport and Exercise—a powerful and engaging learning tool—offers students a jump start in their studies. And with adoption, you’ll receive an excellent package of teaching materials free. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good reference material
This book is excellent consolidation of reference material which is sensibly divided into logical chapters.

It covers every area of sport performance in well-documented and example-driven text, colour diagrams and graphical representations. It is a generic reference book, which does not focus on specific sports activities, but uses examples from a wide range of sports to demonstrate the body's response to exercise, training and the passage of time.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a detailed overview of the physiological responses to training, or needs specific answers to questions. An excellent index and layout also makes this a good reference book for looking up quick answers to problems. Absolutely worth the cost. Only criticism... there is a slightly schizophrenic approach to units of measure, reflecting the US imperial measurements, Keep a calculator handy to convert to SI units (eg Kgs, Kms, etc)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to exercise physiology
This book is well-illustrated and easy to read, but it is really a basic text, not the end-all.For example, in the section on nutrition, the authors recommend that carbohydrates should constitute 50% of an athlete's daily calories, and yet they neglect the fact that so many people in thiscountry do not tolerate carbohydrates well.Nutrition really needs to beadjusted to the individual's metabolism and needs, and there is really noone set magic formula that will work for everyone. But, if you keep thatin mind and are looking for a good introductory text, this will serveadmirably.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Exercise Book
A good physiology exercise book is so important to understanding the body and how all of the different systems work together. This book does a great job of explaining concepts by colorful graphics and pictures. If your anadvid athlete like myself you will enjoy this book.I was always chasingthe new fads in exercise or trying the latest diet to trim down, they neverworked. You must first understand some of the complexities of the humanbody.Likewise, if you want to tweak your car's engine you must firstunderstand some of the most basic principles of a car engine before addingexpensive and useless gadgets. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!! There is no other word for it.
This book is excellent as an introductory textbook of immunology. I teach 1st year medical students immunology and have very little curriculum time to do this. The 5th edition of Immunology: A Short Course covers all the essential material without making it needlessly cumbersome. I recommend it without reservation.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Book
This is one of the worst textbooks I've ever read. I bought this book for my M1 Immuno class and threw it away after a week. The explainations are poor at best and the pictures are pathetic.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good but still needs some reviewing
I used this book in my immunology class at the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras campus and first the class was awful because of the professor that didn't know what she was teaching and because the book even though is good still needs some work to be done, its full with errors, for example when it is explaining the immunoassays it doen's say that there are two kinds of ELISA:Direct and Indirect, it also doesn't explain the concept of Titer so if you take this class and use this textbook as your primary reference book be prepared to read and memorize like crazy, Immunology is a subject that should be teach in a conscise manner and with an analytical perspective not with the "empty-the-bottle" approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to immunology
This book is a great introduction to immunology. Many other immunology books have too much information to absorb, but this book is as brief as possible without sacrificing clarity. I especially liked the review questions and ample references at the end of each chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars As textbooks go, this one is a very good read.
I read this book and I second the customer comment from "A Reader" dated 07/05/96. This is a great, user-friendly, humanely written book. Better to really know this book and use Janeway, Roitt or another text as a reference. ... Read more

Book Description

Xenopus laevis is the key model for developmental, differential and embryological studies in vertebrates. Using molecular biological techniques it has become possible within the last few years to analyze developmental processes up to the level of genes. On obtaining results it is necessary to correlate them with morphological and histological stages. This excellent work documents and describes such developmental stages in finite detail. After an informative introduction to The Early Development of Xenopus laevis follows the highlight of the book, namely the 42 plates, each consisting of at least four high resolution micrographs. The reader is thus provided with a histological presentation of immaculate quality. Each plate is complemented by a schematic diagram describing the details shown on the plate, an additional scheme indicating the section and an explanatory short text, making this a potentially highly sought after work. ... It's time to make a baby. You and your partner ditch the birth control, chart your cycle, pinpoint Ovulation Day, and then proceed to make wonderfullove, reveling in the joy and excitement of creating new life. Later, you makelists of names, even daydream about your child going to your alma mater. Thenreality hits. You don't get pregnant.

In high school, they warned, "It only takes one time." But age, health problems, and the anxiety that often builds around an inability to conceive can turn thatearly admonition into a mocking refrain. Today, about 20 percent of couples findthemselves riding the cyclone of fertility frustration, alternately flying highon hope, then plunging into despair as each month passes without a positivepregnancy test. For anyone who's been trying to get pregnant for at least a year(the current definition of infertility), Six Steps to Increased Fertilityis a must-read. Written by the Harvard Medical School team Robert L. Barbieri,M.D., Alice D. Domar, Ph.D, and Kevin R. Loughlin, M.D., Six Steps guidesyou through the conception process, explaining what can derail it and detailingthe vast range of treatment options for boosting conception odds--from simplelifestyle adjustments to fertility drugs to more aggressive therapies like invitro fertilization. Along the way, there are supportive tales of couples who'vesurvived the infertility ordeal and checklists of questions for your doctor. Amedical glossary and a list of organizations that deal with infertility, mentalhealth, miscarriage, and adoption are tucked in the back.

But what makes this book so appealing is the authors' refreshing six-stepphilosophy, one that melds natural methods with conventional medicine. Theirperspective: technology can be wonderful, but it should rarely be the firststep. Oftentimes, depending on one's age and health, changes in diet, exerciseroutine, and stress levels can make all the difference. Indeed, the cornerstoneof the book is the do-it-yourself version of the successful Harvard BehavioralMedicine Program for Infertility that includes easy-to-master relaxationexercises and other stress-reduction techniques. In study after study, researchhas definitively shown that as stress, anxiety, and depression levels go down, pregnancy and birth rates rise. Six Steps offers sensitive advice andcoping strategies meant to help couples understand that while being "infertile"can be all-consuming, it is not the sum total of their lives. --NorineDworkin ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I owe my pregnancy to this book!
I never write book reviews, but I owe the birth of my daughter to the advice given by this book! After 6 years of no contraception, my husband and I finally decided that we were going to REALLY TRY to have a child, so I bought this book, as a starting point to figure out what we--both over 35-- needed to do to get pregnant. In our case, the changes in lifestyle recommended in the book were all we needed; I got pregnant 3 months after putting its advice into practice. This is the perfect book to start with if you want to create a lifestyle that gives you the best chance for getting pregnant, without starting with the infertility drugs. Note that the medical options are also discussed in the book, as well as how much time is reasonable for trying to get pregnant "naturally." Good Luck!

2-0 out of 5 stars Useless
If you had problem with conception for some time, chances are that you already did your 'homework' and read about all possible causes and treatment on the Internet, or discussed it with your doctor. This book is a very general summery of infertility problems, and mainly a big ad for the authors' treatment plan that is available, I assume, in the hospital where they work. I would not recommend this book to anybody - you can definitely find more useful info online, and definitely cheaper!

1-0 out of 5 stars "just relax and you'll get pregnant?"
This comes so dangerously close to blaming infertility on things like inability to relax. How many IVF and other patients with serious medical conditions have had the insulting advice, "if you just relax you'll get pregnant". The best advice anyone can get is to get to a top quality medical specialist as soon as possible, not to get distracted or be given false hope by this nonsense.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book contains many important fertility secrets
My doctor told me and my husband that we needed IVF. We were a little concerned about the use of a high technology treatment so early in our quest to build a family. This book helped us identify many important life-style issues and stressors that probably contributed to our fertility problem. Fertility treatments can cause a lot of emotional stress, and this book helped us to cope with these problems. We think it helped us to get pregnant.

5-0 out of 5 stars It helped me get pregnant
As a chef, i was in a high stress job, that required me to work over 60 hours per week. I followed the advice in chapters 1 and 4 and became pregnant in 3 months. Following the advice in this book was a lot better than going through IVF. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love neuroscience-get this book!
The Clinical Practice of Neurological and Neurosurgical Nursing is an excellent overview of the care and management of the neuroscience patient. It's perspective is largely that of neurosurgery/ trauma nursing and is focused predominately on the acute phases of care. This text is arranged topically by disease/ injury process with the introductory chapters oriented towards concerns in neuroscience nursing. The depth and breadth of the material is suitable to meet my needs in the neuro-intensive care unit of the Level I trauma center in which I work. It provides a ready and easy to use reference with solid explantions of disease process, complications, treatment, pharmacology, and nursing considerations. I recommend this text to new nurses in neuroscience at my hospital regularly and I am currently using it to prepare for certification in neuroscience nursing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Guide for the lung
This book was well worth the money! It was concise and helped me understand topics that were very confusing in lecture (ventilation/perfusion relationship). Plus it is a fast easy read. In 4 days I was able to read the book, understand all the important concepts and ace the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars -- perfect --
This book was short and concise. Extra gibberish was omitted - the remnants were a beautiful combination of text and explanations to often confusing topics. This book is perfect for any one studying respiration. This book is intended for med school students, but it is written in such a fashion that anyone could pick it up and read it. Reviewing? Cramming? Learning? This book will solve all your problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars A short Introduction
This is a compact and simple introductory book about the subject.
It covers the structure, function and illnesses of the Respiratory system. It does not have nice or clear pictures like some new print books on shiny pages but information is there. Consider it as an extention of your Physiology book on the Respiratory Systems.I found the charts that shows the changes in based on changes in variables very helpfull.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth buying
This is an excellent introduction to respiratory physiology suitable for medical students.

It is concise and good for last-minute revising but written in a style that is very easy on the reader. The organisation of the chapters is perfect.

My only criticism is that the oxygen and CO2 dissociation curves are not very accurately drawn, but the book is otherwise full of useful diagrams.

Well worth adding to your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Textbook of Anatomy-Hollingshead
The textbook is well organized. It proceeds from a general
introduction to a discussion of the study of anatomy,
connective tissue, the limbs, back, abdomen etc. The writing
is clear and understandable to a wide audience of readers.
Diagrams depict the various body parts . There is a
clear understanding of how the body parts are positioned
and how they cooperate in motion. Roentgenogram sights depict the
appearance of bone matter almost identically to the real x-ray
form. The work is formulated to satisfy a wide constituency of
readers i.e. students of the biological sciences, teachers,
students of radiology and the general public. The book is a
worthy addition to any science library.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but it needs a supplement
From the perspective a first year med student:
1. Great writing. Not as dry a writing style as other books I
have looked over.
2. Chincy on diagrams and charts. If you are expecting a
textbook with glossy pages filled with colour diagrams (this
book has neither), then either choose an other book or buy a
good supplement (like Rohen's Color Atlas of Anatomy).
3. I wouldn't say this is the best book for an intro to anatomy.
For example, in the section on "Terms of position, planes,
direction, and movement", there are no illustrations. If you
are a visual learner (as I am), then you may find this
frustrating.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine text
I had the pleasure of being a student of Dr. Rosse at the University of Washington. His text is organized in the same way that he teaches anatomy, emphasizing anatomical definitions and relationships in a structured and orderly manner. This edition also has great graphics that improve on prior editions. A fine addition to any medical library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Polly A. Porter, MS, ATC , Physician Assistant student
This book is essential for medical students who want to conquer the basic educaiton in the health related profession- anatomy of the human body. It allows the student the ability to enter into the intrinsic areas of the body so he/she can develop an implicit and fully internalized understanding of the 3-D dynamic structure of the living human body.

I found it as an excellent guide in reference to surgery because I was able to acquaint myself to the structures in proximity to each other. It is however, not for the entry level student. It would be more suited for a cadaver class, as opposed to a first time look at the human body. It promotes anatomical reasoning , a cognitive process that relates to manifestations of normal and abnormal function to anatomical entities.

The book lacks a little in medical illustration but a supplement ( Netter's ) or a cadaver is a good addition to this text. It does combine photos, radiographs, and some fine detail illustrations, including cross-section anatomy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I used this book primarily during my microbiology course. I did reference it while I studied for Step 1 also. The end of this book that contains "Summary of Medically Important Bacteria/Virus/Fungi/Parasites" is a great resource to have. Get this one early and read it, then reference it as needed for your board prep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical Microbiology and Immunology
Warren Levinson is a genius! This book is absolutely brilliant. I would recommend it to almost anybody who doesn't like dumbed down books like Lippincott. Levinson's Microbiology is clear and comprehensive. It tells you exactly what to focus on, and cuts out extraneous details. The immunology section is even better! You'll love this book. The questions are even fantastic in helping you remember all the bugs, and the quick summary reviews at the end make this book worth your while. One recommendation for the next edition is to add more clinically relative laboratory perspectives. Make tables and keep reviewing until the day boards comes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for boards
This book is an excellent source for the boards. It reviews important topics that are important to know and gives you an advantage. I liked the format of the book and it made studying painless and more enjoyable. I also used the following:

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book as foundation for medical microbiology students
I used this as one of my required texts for my microbiology class in med school. It had very good sections on parasitology, viruses, etc. It was fun learning the what parasites are endemic to certain regions of the world and what symptoms they cause. I was used the following: Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi. This second book was great because it was thorough in the aspects of test preparation in these various ways: it helped me prepare for the type of questions asked by my microbiology professor. In this way when I was studying I knew which facts to study harder and to know better. I easily got in the top 1% of my medical microbiology in grades with the help of these two books. I give each book five stars.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much information
This book offers a very comprehensive look at microbiology and virology (with some immunology and parasitology thrown in); unfortunately, that's not a good thing if you're trying to study from it. The chapters are full of information on lab values and other minutiae that will be of interest to only those who make a living in the field. Otherwise, you'll have to search hard to pick out the relevant details that are worth remembering. There are definitely better, easier to use books on the market than this one

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a modern and exact book

5-0 out of 5 stars good for 2nd yr med school micro - but short on clin. stuff
depending on the focus of your course, this might not have enough clinical case-related material. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wealth of Knowledge
This is an excellent source of information for the new and experienced critical care nurse. The book contains a wealth of extremely detailed information with regard to anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and hemodynamic monitoring. This book covers equipment set up, maintancence, and trouble-shooting. It is full very useful information, for example, how cardiac output and pulmonary wedge pressures are effected by other hemodynamic parameters or outside influences such as PEEP levels and how to account for the increased intrathoracic pressure. Lots of calculations to show you how doctors arrive at decisions and numbers. The book is set up from broad to specific with great organization. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars best of the best
This is the ultimate hemodynamic book, listing disease processes, treatments, causes, symptoms--you name it, it's in there. A great guide for the new critical care nurse. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for histology class and USLME
I used this book and the following which is also on Amazon.com:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers.
The first book was written well and was quite helpful in preparing me for my histology exams in med school. Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (ISBN: 0971999686) was so on target with the kind of questions asked on my histology exams in med school. It also proved to be helpful for the histology portion of the USLME Step 1. It goes to show since I got excellent grades in my histology class and on my USLME. I gave my friends both of these books to study from for class exams and for the boards, and they all passed the first time. My advice is to get both books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must buy for USLME
I found the information in this book pretty on target for the topics that are needed for the histology portion USLME 1. This book is a very good reference because it helped me summarize the info better in a much shorter fashion than just going back to a long textbook. If you really want to know the type of questions asked on the USLME step 1, I highly recommend the following that is also on amazon. Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (ISBN: 0971999686) This two study guides are must buys. There are both worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for USLME step 1
This was a good review for the histology portion of the USLME Step 1. It has similar topics that were asked on in the test. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Super for the boards
I found this book to be really helpful. I know people who used some other books to prepare for histology and regretted it. The book is laid out in outline manner which makes finding information easy. The questions were just like the kinds I encountered on my Step I exam. I highly recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good board review book for histo/cell bio
I felt that this was a good book to use for board review purposes. The outline format, like all the BRS books, is easy to follow and makes it easy to look up info. The end of chapter questions are the best part by allowing you to see if you really understood what you just read. It does not have the number and quality of pictures that a good atlas would have but it is a good book to use to supplement a histo atlas. ... Read more

Book Description

The Sixth Edition of Dr. Haines’s best-selling neuroanatomy atlas features a stronger clinical emphasis, with significantly expanded clinical information and correlations. More than 110 new images-including MRI, CT, MR angiography, color line drawings, and brain specimens-highlight anatomical-clinical correlations.

Internal spinal cord and brainstem morphology are presented in a new format that shows images in both anatomical and clinical orientations, correlating this anatomy exactly with how the brain and its functional systems are viewed in the clinical setting. A new chapter contains over 235 USMLE-style questions, with explained answers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful pics
I gave it four stars because I don't think I could recommend this atlas as a stand-alone sole reference for someone trying to master neuro-anatomy, but I do recommend it as part of your arsenal.

I don't know if you have had the experience of moving to a new city. Have you? You study street maps, and you have to get lost several times. But somewhere along the line you start having moments where things are snapping into focus. You start to see how things fit together in your head. Soon you are imagining short-cuts, anticipating the traffic jams, and debating the best routes with the natives.

I had to struggle with this atlas a little. I'm more a psych guy than a neuro guy but I love the circuitry and appreciate the importance of understanding it. I liked this initially because of the great illustrations of brain sections, but soon I found that things were clicking into place in my mind.

I recommend this for anyone struggling to understand all the tracts and nuclei in the spinal cord and brain stem. There is a sequence of slices in the middle section of this atlas that creeps up slowly, from lumbar spine through the thalamus, with a picture of an actual stained section next to a labelled illustration. I went through this slowly and carefully, copying the pictures as I went. And then, BOOM, I had that moment. I could see it all, motor tracts, sensory tracts, cerebellar circuits, ventricles, even the friggin' reticular activating system. It was quite an expansive feeling.

Again, not a flawless book. I still like to go back to Netter's to see the limbic structures and basal ganglia dissections as well as to review the vasculature. But Haines' Atlas does have some unique strengths if you are willing to work through it very patiently. Enjoy.

Peace, I'm out.

2-0 out of 5 stars ok but it lacks some stuff
This is an ok atlas for neuro anatomy but I found it lacked some pathways. However, what it does have in pathways is fairly clear and concise. Still, the slides lack clarity so some stuff is hard to understand.

2-0 out of 5 stars not reader friendly
I found the actual photos to be great however the presenation of the tracts left a lot to be desired ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Clinical case scenarios of OB/Gyn
This book gives you 53 major cases of Obstetrics and Gynecology as one of the Underground Clinical Vignettes series. Obviously, this book alone is not enough to prepare for USMLE Step 2, but the great thing about this book is that it really focus on the disease and keywords that actually appear in the exam (e.g. vaginitis, OCP, amenorrhea, eclampsia etc). You pick up this book, see any of the scenario and if you cannot guess the diagnosis by reading through the history and findings, or any of the highlighted keywords on the scenario is unfamiliar to you, you need to buy this book. If you can, forget about this series, and work on simulated tests.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not useful
In my experience, this book was not helpful for Step 1 preparation. Partly because Behavioral Sciences is not heavily tested in the exam and clinical vignettes are time consuming. Also, I felt that by studying a standard review book alone, I was able to remember the distinguishing aspects of each disease. However I am sure there are many people who would find this book useful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
This is the worst book of the series and is a waste of time. Pharmacology cannot be taught by clinical vignettes and the author himself recognizes this. In the book review section of First Aid, Dr. Bhushan admits that it is not an ideal review source. The problem is that within two lines of the clinical vignette, the drug is revealed, so there is no chance to guess the answer. There are less time consuming ways to learn the side effects of drugs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for USMLE prep
All three of the PathoPysiology books of the Clinical Vignettes series are excellent review books for pre-clinical students taking Step 1. Many questions on the exam are asked from a clinical standpoint. For IMGs who have clinical experience before taking Step 1, these books are less useful. However, they are still good to review unusual diseases. Since Pathology is so heavily tested in Step 1, these books are a good investment for anyone preparing for Step 1.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best of the series
I found this book very helpful in forming a clinical picture in my mind for all those confusing biochemical diseases. I felt this was one of the best books of this series. It is good to use after reviewing the subject. This book is not sufficient on its own and should be used as an adjunct to a standard review book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly boring!
This entire series of "Incredibly Easy" books should be called "Incredibly Boring"! I've found all of them to be useless in keeping my attention or in helping me to remember. There is nothing memorable about anything in these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book!!!!
This book helped me get through Pathophysiology. When you are learning about Fluids and Electrolytes, it really breaks it down into an easier to understand format. The quizzes and questions at the end of the book are also helpful. They do not only give you the correct answer but also tell you why it is correct. I would reccommend it to any nursing student, even if your program does not require Patho!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for nursing students!
This book is a must have for nursing students! Makes fluid and electrolytes easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great For Nursing Students!
I read this book over my summer break from nursing school and found it very helpful. It is easy to follow and you will be amazed at how interesting fluids and electrolytes can be! It made everything "click"

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I am an Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and ACLS Experienced Provider (ACLS-EP) Instructor and use this book in my classes. It is a great book to teach electrolytes, and is very clear. I am also an Excelsior student, and this book was essential for Nursing Concepts 2 test. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND purchasing this book if you plan on taking NC2 or ACLS-EP. If you are ever confused about why you have electrolytes infusing, this book is clear and to the point. ... Read more

Book Description

Dr. Michael Gershon has devoted his career to understanding the human bowel (the stomach, esophagus, small intestine, and colon). His thirty years of research have led to an extraordinary rediscovery: nerve cells in the gut that act as a brain. This "second brain" can control our gut all by itself. Our two brains -- the one in our head and the one in our bowel -- must cooperate. If they do not, then there is chaos in the gut and misery in the head -- everything from "butterflies" to cramps, from diarrhea to constipation. Dr. Gershon's work has led to radical new understandings about a wide range of gastrointestinal problems including gastroenteritis, nervous stomach, and irritable bowel syndrome. The Second Brain represents a quantum leap in medical knowledge and is already benefiting patients whose symptoms were previously dismissed as neurotic or "it's all in your head."

4-0 out of 5 stars Not just my gut feeling!
A compelling informative guide to the concept of "Big brain and little brain". This book is super And its not just my gut feeling. Readers may also look up "Natural Stomach Care", and "Your Gut Feelings".

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable Science, not New Age twaddle!
This is a serious enteric neurology text (the first!) and an entertaining memoir rolled into one. Dr. Gershon is passionate about the brain in the bowel and he (and his editor) have done a superlative job of explaining some very complicated neurochemistry. I haven't even read through to the practical advice section and I think it's superb already! Highly recommended not only for those with unhappy guts, but for anyone who's ever been curious about the digestive system, how it works and how it evolved to have such a big and independent control system.

4-0 out of 5 stars Second brain holds clues for first brain problems
I am a neurological development consultant who has read this book thoroughly and concur with the findings from a developmental point of view. I found this book a must read for anyone who has a developmentally challenged child or adult. In working with brain disorders and brain injuries, I always look to the bowel in the course of the examination because, 'if the bowel ain't happy, the brain ain't either!' There is so much more that is not in this book about the bowel that affects the brain that it would take several volumes of books to elaborate on what is already known today. If you or a loved one suffer from psychological ailments, brain disorders, IBS, or even just common irregularities of the bowel, reading this book is an appropriate start to gain an understanding of basic biological processes of the bowel.

Also recommended: Biological Treatments for Autism, Tissue Cleansing Through Bowel Management,

5-0 out of 5 stars Intricate, highly recommended story of medical research
Gershon's book is really two books in one: a memoir or exposition of all that is involved in medical research (including the politics), and a detailed explanation of the neuroscience and neurochemistry of the enteric nervous system (e.g., digestive tract). This is not a simple book to read -- it takes concentration, and I certainly had my highlighter out to draw attention to several terms or ideas I wanted to recall. The narrative can get fairly scientific, but to add to your understanding the author uses commonplace allegories or diagrams -- and just when it starts to get too "heavy", he gives you a break by turning autobiographical, telling stories about his research community that are very interesting. This isn't a textbook, but rather a lengthy exposition on a man's search for scientific truth. I am a scientist myself and often wonder what draws an individual to a focused "obsession" with a single idea, and Gershon in his pursuit of knowledge through experimentation and conceptualization gave me insights into one type of scientific mind. The digestive system, via Gershon's work, is the source of neurotransmitters, so there is a substantial amount of information here for anyone interested in neurology, neuroscience, psychiatry, and of course the behavior of the digestive tract. This is not a book for anyone who has a digestive problem who wants a cure -- it is a book for understanding digestion and/or the nervous system. However, if you are interested in deep science, this is one of the best written and thorough books I've read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory material for the technical
To those who are interested in the functional aspects of the DNA this is the right introductory stuff. It covers areas including basic molecular biology to commercial methods for manipulating the genes. Pretty useful for someone who's more interested in the technology than the biology!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good overview but lacks technical rigor
I am currently using this book for a course in Molecular Biotechnology taught through the chemistry department. Although the book covers a wide range of biotechnology fields, from manipulation of gene expression in prokaryotes and eukaryotes through human gene therapy, it does so in a somewhat shallow and repetitive way. I have also seen clearer and more concise diagrams covering similar topics in other biochemistry books, and there is a paucity of in-depth coverage in any particular area. This is not necessarily the authors's fault, however, arising from the plethora of information found in the biotechnology field. If someone wants a broad review of molecular biotechnology, this is a decent book, but if you want to focus on a specific area within biotechnology, look somewhere else. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most comprehensive book I know
The organization of this book, each structure having its own chapter, makes it easy to find information about any brain area.
