Book Description

From mortal illness to miraculous recovery, a doctor's moving account of his own experience as a patient

At forty-two, Geoffrey Kurland, a pediatric pulmonologist specializing in such deadly diseases as cystic fibrosis, was diagnosed with hairy cell leukemia, a rare cancer with a statistically low survival rate. A remarkably fit man in training for 100-mile "extreme" races whose job is equally high performance, he is forced to confront the challenge of his own mortality. He tries to cope by turning inward in a desperate search for ever-elusive answers. As the doctor becomes a patient and lives through the terror and pain that he had until then only observed at a remove in his young patients, he learns invaluable life lessons that will ultimately make him a better doctor.

This is Kurland's memoir of his diagnosis, treatment, and return to health and "normal" life-an unforgettable testament to the resilence of the human spirit.

5-0 out of 5 stars power of the human mind and spirit
Our family was inspired by the stamina and ability to reach for the stars that doctor Kurland demonstrated in his book. It was quite helpful in dealing with our own personal fight against a difficult illness. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone dealing with disease and irony. As a doctor he has an aura of magnetic strength and is highly regarded in his profession. We tip our hats off to you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasure, inspiration AND education.
Nonfiction with all the excitement of a novel. It reads easily, stays on track, holds the reader's interest and has to have wide appeal. How a physician barely survives a frightening disease and manages to achieve some lifelong dreams in the face of extreme adversity. It offers special insight to all of us as potential patients or medical providers, with some special appeal to runners and endurance athletes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
Wonderful book with a lot of insight on the doctor being the patient. Despite the seriousness of the subject (diagnosis and treatment of lymphoma), it is sprinkled with humorous anecdotes about medical sub-specialists and medical training. Gives insight into physician thinking and training that should prove enlightening to non-physicians. A well-written, wise book by a great doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars moving and fascinating perspective on being a patient
This book is a refreshingly candid, funny, and moving account of one physician's experiences as a patient with a serious and often fatal illness. I found it difficult to put down, extremely well written, and accessible to both lay public and medical professional. Dr. Kurland's account is an important addition to the genre addressing the patient experience. It is must reading for anyone involved in patient care... and anyone who might be a patient... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If only.....
.....this book had been around in the 80s it would have made my journey so much easier! This book is indeed a gift to Humanity.

I cannot emphasize enough the value of a support system sister (or brother) while on this kind of path.

The desire to be impeccably honest in their dialogue allows the same for the reader in our own personal journeys. Invaluable.

Thank you Barbara and Margaret, not only for your courage to take this journey together, but to publish it as well. If this does not become a bedside/waiting room book in every Cancer and plain old Health Clinics in the world, I will be most surprised.

In deepest gratitude and appreciation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goodbye Cancer!
Dear Barbara and Margaret,

Your book just came! And I LOVE it! The format of the e-mails bouncing back and forth between the two of you over 200 miles of communication lines is quite wonderful!

Of course I dived right into the book. There are places where I can see you, Margaret, making turning points. At Barbara's urging, you stopped worrying about everyone around you and you started to take care of MARGARET! Would that all of us learned this lesson. The e-mail format has such an immediacy to it. As I read it I thought, I wonder what is going to happen next. What is Margaret going to do? -- and will it WORK? Barbara, there is more than one place where I felt that you were talking right to me.

A lot of times when I get a new book, fiction or one on health, I will want to race right through it. On this one, though, I have made myself stop, think, listen and plan. I need to take more time to think about what is happening in MY body as well. It is our Vehicle, -- the only one we've got and we have to take good care of it, if it is going to take good care of us!

I've had some wakeup calls of my own recently that have forced me to look at ME FIRST! and to take care of ME!

Thank you both for an inspiring book!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a wonderful book!
What a wonderful book about healing yourself by talking to your cells! It is with great and deep pleasure that I learned about Margaret's healing.
I will have to re-read a lot of the passages. Because your book arrived at the right moment: I need to learn how to communicate with my cells in order to heal my left foot, my right knee, my neck, which cause considerable problems at this moment. I wish I had a mentor like you, Barbara. But I am confident that your recipes can be applied to my own specific needs. Please keep you fingers crossed that I'll make it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Results
I followed suggestions in this book when I accidently poured on my
breast broiling hot turkey juice. I immediately told my cells that this
was not going to be a problem. When I said that, I no longer felt any
pain. I phoned my doctor to get salve for the burn and I was told to
come right away to the office. When I got there, the doctor, two nurses
and a physician assistant came in to look at my burn, which they said
was first and second degree. They could not believe I was not in pain.
They gave me salve and told me not to wear a bra for two days. Instead,
I put on a bra the next day and went back to work. A week later, I
returned to the doctor's office and they were astonished to see how
fast the burn had healed. They told me I would definitely have a scar.
I have only a very little scar. Hurray for Margaret Fikioris and
Barbara Wolf! Their book really helped me.

Book Description

Winner of the 2003 American Society of Journalists and Authors' June Roth Memorial Award for Health and Medical Books. An authoritative book with new lifesaving strategies for those at risk and those already diagnosed. Lung cancer kills more women than does breast cancer, more men than prostate cancer. That's because lung cancer is usually found too late. Claudia Henschke's groundbreaking research on early diagnosis made headlines worldwide. Now, for the first time, she offers specific recommendations based on her latest findings: who needs to be checked, where to be tested, and what to expect. Dr. Henschke and co-author Peggy McCarthy, a leading patient advocate, provide up-to-the-minute information on treatment, with inspiring quotes from survivors. The book describes how the lungs work and how cancer develops. Questionnaires pinpoint risk factors (including past as well as current smoking) and the sometimes surprising symptoms, like back pain or swollen fingertips, that can signal a problem. Henschke and McCarthy explain how to remain healthy, active, and pain-free during and after treatment. They also address emotional and practical concerns, such as coping with guilt and dealing with insurance. 15 b/w illustrations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 year Lung Cancer Survivor
As a 5 year+ Lung Cancer Survivor, I have read many books on this life threatening disease. This one is by far the best! It is accurate, enlightening, and very understandable to a layman. It is easy to read and I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is My Cancer Guide!
My mother was recently diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer and this book has been by our sides the whole time. I was quite impressed with the book's clarity of details and "understandability". So often , information in books regarding illnesses of this magnitude can clutter and confuse the mind, this book set me straight. We were able to understand the physicians during various appointments and we were able to ask good questions. Knowledge allowed us a little bit of control in a very out of control situation, and I believe this book helped tremendously. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok but not great
I found the overt Christianity in this book a little difficult to get past. I do not believe in a god, and if I haad known about this slant before buying I probably would not have bought it.

I also found Sue Buchanan's adversarial relationship to her doctors and indeed (except at the VERY back of the book) to the medical profession, a little disturbing. She is not required to use any doctor she meets, and if she is going to laugh at them in public and write all over all the tongue-depressors, she should find a new doctor. Yes, it is hard to be kept waiting or to be talked down to by surgeons, but a) the doctor you are waiting for may be coping with another distraught patient, and b) all surgeons I have ever met, while techically skilled, are poor at patient communication. They are skilled, arrogant, decisive, and opinionated -- and that's what I want when I'm in the operating room. But in the office they are abrupt and impatient.

I found it interesting that she had her chemo treatments BEFORE the blood chemistry results came back. They would NEVER do that where my wife has chemo. Accurate reading of blood counts and differentials is key to proper chemo decision-making. Glad she survived.

And by the way, they don't take blood to detect cancer -- cancer cannot be detected in the bloodstream even if it is there because of the very low density of cancer cells compared to blood cells. Detecting cancer in the blood is done by inference only.

She is to be commended on her upbeat approach, but an optimistic attitude, solid family support, and a generous heart are more important than "dissing" the medical profession. Yes, statistics are sometimes grim, but you may always be the 1% who get the good results -- and you may not. Statistics DO help you evaluate procedures and treatments, however.

Despite my defense of the medical profession, I am not a medical person nor are any of my relatives except one nephew who is a vet. We met the medical profession when my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago.

So while this was a OK read, I found it much less interesting than Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book, 3rd edition, which (in its earlier edition) was recommended to my wife at the time of her diagnosis by her surgeon and is very readable and well-organized, and quite upbeat too. I also liked Dr. David Spiegel's Living Beyond Limits. Both were far more valuable and thought-provoking than this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars NEVER TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER
"She will be dead soon." Fifteen years after that awful pronouncement, Sue Buchanan is lecturing, running her successful corporation and reminding all breast cancer patients that we are NOT victims. Stand up for your rights, stand up and do the unexpected, stand up and laugh out loud. Her honest story of her battle with breast cancer and some of the doctors she met along the way is a quick, enjoyable read. Her continued joie de vie and encouragement for all women is delightful. A good book when you are down in the dumps - it's enough to shake you out of the doldrums and into some action!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the bunch...give it to a friend.
I prefer the original title: Love, Laughter and a High Disregard for Statistics. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer 5 years ago, friends and family (with the best intentions) felt compelled to send me books by survivors of the disease. Some of them were interesting, others downright depressing, but this one really lifted my spirits and helped me to cope. Well written -- a fun read -- I still have it and frequently share it with other women as they face the challenges of cancer. Sue Buchanan, you sure made a difference in this woman's life. Oncologist Hirshaut and surgeon Pressman form a specialized team of renowned authority on the treatment of breast cancer. Their book--a winner of The American Medical Writers Association's Rose Kushner Award--serves as "an additional expert by your side," providing a backstage look at the essence of breast cancer. Written for women diagnosed with breast cancer or concerned about the possibility of developing it, the guide is separated into four informative yet nonthreatening sections: "From Suspicion to Diagnosis," "Treatment," "After the Treatment," and "Life After Cancer."

The authors clarify terminology and treatment jargon that's often lost on the layperson. For instance, fibroadenomas are described as "an orderly growth of cells, confined to the breast, that results in benign, movable, and rounded lumps." The TNM system of staging is clarified as this: "the conditions Tumor, lymph Nodes and Metastasis are taken into account to determine the stage at which the cancer has been found; staging is a vital tool in measuring risk and choosing treatment."

Descriptions and illustrations help explain presurgical procedures, again providing an insider's knowledge into what to expect beyond what is usually provided by a regular physician. Additionally, in a chapter dedicated solely to prevention, the doctors explore factors that may be related to the disease's onset such as heredity, race, diet, vitamins and minerals, alcohol, caffeine, smoking, radiation exposure and other environmental causes, as well as hormones, birth control pills, and hormone replacement therapy.

The guide concludes with a NABCO (National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations) resource list including numerous offices and phone numbers in each state. Want to know more about breast cancer diagnosis and treatment? This guide may very well serve as the next best thing to an on-call physician, providing clear explanations to questions--whether general or specific--via a detailed index and 17 well-organized chapters. --Cate Bick ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book to guide patients, families through treatment
Betty Rollin's quote on the cover of this book sums it up: "Here are the facts -- clear, unterrifying, and important." I purchased this book for myself and my mother when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. I wanted us both to be able to read about her disease and learn more about what was going to happen to her without being frightened by statistics and other people's case histories. We have both benefitted from this book because it has helped us to understand the whirlwind of activity that followed her diagnosis. The book is not a comprehensive medical reference; there are other books that do a better job of going into detail (like Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book). But as a readable "guidebook" or handbook to help patients and their families understand the steps involved in the treatment of breast cancer, this book is a very good investment.

4-0 out of 5 stars The help you need when you need it most!
This book is a systematic presentation of the medical process a breast cancer patient will go through and the significance of each step. Each issue, test and result is explained. The authors believe that a patient should be an active decisionmaker and advocate of her own interests, and the book is intended to give her the tools to understand and make informed choices about her treatment options and the consequences. This is a terrific overview of the situation, which will make net research much more productive. Clearly written. There is a resources section in the back. ... Read more
