Book Description

"The medicine of the new millennium."--Larry Dossey, M.D., author of Healing Words

Dr. Mehmet Oz, celebrated heart surgeon and co-founder of the Complementary Care Center at New York's Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, is spearheading the health-care revolution that is yielding powerful new healing tools that will forever change the way we think of medicine. In this ground-breaking book, he describes his pioneering work--combining cutting-edge Western medicine with such Eastern techniques as acupuncture and chi-gong, as well as such controversial therapies as hypnosis, music, massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, and energy healing. The inspiring and affecting stories of his patients are the heart of this book--from the extraordinary discipline of Frank Torre, who used his professional sports training to "psych" himself into healing after heart transplant surgery, to the "impossible" recovery of blues great Johnny Copeland, who was roused from a seemingly impenetrable coma through the force of his own music. In recounting his patients' experiences, Dr. Oz forges a blueprint for the radical new medicine of the next millennium--drawing on the best from Eastern and Western therapies and empowering patients to become partners with doctors in promoting their own recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars YES, a powerful voice for Medicine with Hope and Warmth!
An inspiring doctor with a powerful but gentle voice. The more medicine opens up like this the better we are all going to be. I think everyone should read this book. Also HIGHLY RECOMMENDED is "Effortless Wellbeing: The Missing Ingredients for Authentic Wellness" by Evan Finer. Though not a medical book, it is a concise and extremely powerful guide to compliment any healing program, to induce true wellness and to help regain personal strength. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING. Thank you to the authors!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Medicine of the Future
Dr. Oz is an accomplished heart surgeon in the field of cardiac transplantation. He describes how he combines complementary medicine (e.g. hypnosis, reflexology, yoga, message, acupuncture. Etc) with orthodox Western medicine. There is an excellent forward by Dr Dean Ornish, and an interesting epilogue containing an overview of the complementary medicine techniques. The bulk of the book contains stories of patients Dr. Oz treated using this revolutionary way. I am a cardiologist, and I have a great interest in combining western medicine with complementary medicine, which is the reason I bought this book. However this book was a bit boring to read and was also a bit of a disappointment. Nevertheless, those interested in this new medicine, which I think will be the medicine of the new millennium, will want to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC BOOK - SUPERBLY WRITTEN!
What is impressive about this book is the author's concepts of healing both heart and mind as he points out just how closely the two are interconnected. The writing style is one that will grasp the reader's attention from start to finish. The approach to holistic health is a welcome approach to healing. It is a concept that is gradually increasing in the health care field, but one that still has a long way to go before it is universally accepted by all physicians. More education and information needs to be provided in this area to all health care providers. Using the holistic approach, there can be fewer side effects from medication, less depression and a general feeling of well being during the most trying and difficult times. There is much to be said on combining Western and Eastern traditions in the process of healing. Our world can benefit dramatically from this approach and the author vividly explains why throughout the pages of this well-researched and superbly written book. It is highly recommended reading material and most deserving of a five star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book of the year
A great book describing an insiders view of what total healing can mean in today's complex medical care system. The book has deservedly won the Books for Better America award for Best Wellness Book of the Year and should be required reading for all patients contemplating surgery.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was fantastic - for the sick and healthy alike.
Dr. Mehmet has given me a new perspective on holistic health and disease. As my mother is going through the breast cancer battle, I am incorporating many of his suggestions for heart patients: soothing music after the mastectomy, foot massages as she fades in and out of conciousness, arranging to have someone loved at the bedside constantly. I am looking into getting a masseuse to come in and perform foot massage as her body receives chemotherapy. As a result of this, her attitude is positive and I believe that has a grave impact on how her body reacts to all of this trauma. I'm waiting impatiently for his next book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars biblical text on heart
it is amazing that such an authoritative text can actually be written. but there it is!. a masterpiece, which is so encompasing that words fail. braunwald has a tradition and every new edition is a towering giant over the previous.seeing is beleiving, thus i strongly recommend this text to any one wishing to perfect himself in any aspect of cardiology.

5-0 out of 5 stars A HARD-TO-FLAW MASTERPIECE
Anyone familiar with Dr. Braunwald's superb cardiovascular exploits in the "Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine" would not be surprised by the richness of this book.
The diligently crafted chapters are comprehensive, authoritative, well-illustrated, and include all the 'ins' and 'outs' of contemporary cardiology. It is one of the most consistent and coherent multi-authored texts in the field.
This single-volume CD-ROM package is a rich blend of evidence based medicine, best practice, and all the user-flexibility an e-book enthusiast would expect.

5-0 out of 5 stars the Bible of Cardiology
There are many authors that have mastered their subjects. Once in a while however, you come across some authors that have, in addition, mastered the art of imparting that knowledge to others. That is what you have in this volume that has become the indispensable resource for Cardiologists and cardiology fellows. What Harrison's is to Internal Medicine, and Gray's is to Gross Anatomy, Braunwald's is to Cardiology. It is probably easier to talk of the beach without mentioning water than to talk of cardiology without Braunwald's Heart Disease.
This is a very worthy reference resource.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dry info about an interesting subject
This book was written by one of the best in the cardiac pacing field. The only problem is his dry and wordy compilation of cardiac pacing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but a bit wordy at times
I purchased this book to assist me in cardiovascular schooling and found it to be a great book for gaining an understanding of the principles of pacemaker therapy. At times though, the text is a bit wordy and dry. However, I find it very useful for reading up on anything from the indications for both temporary and permament devices to post-implantation evaluation, complications, and interventions. Unfortunately, with the rapidly changing world of pacemaker therapy, this book may soon find itself obsolete. Hope for an updated edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good practice book
Quite extensive workbook about hearth arrhythmias. In each case chapter starts with short theory and than examples of charts for the particular arrhythmias and than you get a chance to practice yourself with number of charts, answers in the back with explanations. It is a good practice book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Practice, practice
This book is great for practice strips! The only way to learn rhythm interpretation is to practice, practice, practice. This book is loaded with strips (and their answers). The content is OK. I didn't like how the author grouped junctional rhythms and heart blocks in the same section, too confusing for the new practitioner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book for your ACLS class!
I am an RN and I recently passed the ACLS course given at my hospital. It was a two day course that was more of an overview of the information than a teaching session. I work on a floor with very sick patients, but we rarely have a code situation. I wanted to take ACLS in order to feel more comfortable when a code does take place. If I had not done as much preparation before the course as I did, I doubt I would have passed. This book helped me immensely to prepare for the class and understand all the information needed. Deffinately get this book before the classes take place, because there is so much information in the study guide and you don't want to go into information overload. As far as I know, this book contains the most up to date information from the ACLS authorities. Get this book and Dale Dubin's "Rapid Interpretation of EKGs" for your next ACLS course, especially if it is the first time you're taking it. Good Luck!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Sorry. so so
If you are senior resident or higher in emergency medicine or internal medicine, this books seems to be too superficial for you. And most importantly it didn't reflect fully 'guidelines 2000 for CPR and ECG'- milestone in the resuscitation medicine: various opinions, arguement and final consensus on the basic life support, newly changed tachycardia algorithm, management of atrial fibrillation, amiodarone in pulseless VT,VF and so on- in you wanna see more exactly, do 'guidelines 2000 for CPR and ECG' and annals of emergency medicine appendix booklet printed in 2000. all that changed will affect and change text sooner . but on the other hand, this book has nice advantages - easily readable and well-organized, detail explanation of pitfall and pearl in basic life support and good discussion themes and self-test question. Recommend for starter , ACLS instructor (manual) or physician not related with resuscitation field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the AHA book
I am an ACLS and ACLS-EP instructor and highly recommend this book. Much more details than the AHA textbook, has an index, and is well written. Actually has a picture of WPW arrythmias, discusses Cardiac Glycosides as well as other things that an effective clinician needs to know. Honestly, if the AHA would let us, I would use this as the text instead of the official one. Unlike the official text this one is clear, has EKG's, and is helpful. If you are teaching ACLS this text is a MUST. If you are taking, this text is extremely helpful. If you have this, and read this, you will do much better than the rest of the class when it is time to test.
If I could give this more than 5 stars, I would give it a 7. (The AHA textbook is a 2)

5-0 out of 5 stars A great supplement to the AHA ACLS provider manual
I bought this book because the AHA book just didn't have enough info for me. This book is very easy to read and gives tons of information which really helps put the total ACLS picture together. If you plan on taking ACLS or just want to know more about the hear this is a great book to own.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent ACLS resource
I'm a SICU nurse and I highly recommend Ms. Aehlert's book. It is by far the best book you will find on the market that will get you ready for ACLS. It's much better than the AHA course book for ACLS. This is an excellent resource and has now become an indispensable part of my reference library. I'm not a novice; I just completed my 4th ACLS class with excellent results, thanks to this book. Buy it before you take ACLS and you will not be disappointed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good and informative book
This book presents the various arrythmias in a very good format. From atrial to junctional rhythms, her explanations and diagrams are very helpful and informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical Student, MSIII
Greatest heart pathophysiology book I have found. The book gives you a firm grasp of heart physiology and uses that to build your clinical and pathophysiology of disease knowledge. And, it's brief. If you don't have time for Braunwald's this is the next best thing. I'll never get rid of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hi everybody!!
This body is great!!
I wish I had this in medical school. I still refer to it now. You wanna know about cardiac physiology, MI's, EKG's, hypertension, arrhythmias, heart sounds, heart failure, valvular heart disease, than buy this book and read it!! It even has a section on drugs for the heart. Plus I liked the way this book was written - a very nice style. I tink that the only thing missing is a section on cardiac tumors, I know, I know, they are rare, but still....
It is great to know the facts from this book when I go to examine patients because now I know what I am doing, which is important if you are a surgeon like me! And let me tell you, you don't wanna do any operation on a person with the bad heart, could get you trouble, and please let's not get the law involved!

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Bible"
My classmates generally do not like buying books in their first two years of coursework, since we are issued coursenotes. I knew, however, that this book was a must-buy when people always made reference to it as "the Bible".

This book is short and sweet, doing a great job covering basics like electrophysiology, the theory of the ECG, atheroscleorsis, coronary artery disease and MIs, congestive heart failure, and pharmacotherapy. One reviewer mentioned that this book will not let you just up and interpret ECGs, which is true. However, that takes quite a bit of practice and goes beyond this book's scope. What the book does do is provide a good explanation of some basics principles underlying the ECG's use that makes their interpretation a little more intuitive, rather than just looking at arbitrary squiggles.

This book is the real deal, and should be up on your shelf with other big names like Harrison's and Robbins.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read book
Written by experts and new graduates it is very helpful. Every aspect of Heart diseases is explained. I enjoyed a lot explanations of ECG forms and reasons behind it. Unlike those books that says if you see such and such shape you have this or that. Every pathophysiology of hearth diseases is clearly explanied with simple explanations. Book does not say much about performance of the heart muscle as you probably have seen in physiology books but practical understanding is plentiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for medical students
This book is the best cardiology text I have ever encountered for me (a medical student) to learn cardiac physiology and therapy as well as pathophysiology. I referred to it during all four years of medical school, and, now that I'm graduating and selling most of my preclinical books, it's one of only three that I'm not selling. ... Read more

Book Description

IF YOU HAVE HEART DISEASE, ARTHRITIS, or CANCER, you've probably got calcification -- one of the most widespread harmful conditions in existence, and found with diseases like osteoporosis and Alzheimers. Doctors have long known that something in our body misuses calcium to make us sick; they just haven't known why, or how to treat it. Until now.

If you've never heard of calcification or don't know what it does, you'll find crucial answers in The Calcium Bomb, including medical science's recent discovery of a particle -- a nanobacterium so small it challenges the very definition of life -- that makes otherwise good calcium go bad, and which has also been discovered in other incurable diseases. Until recently scientists didn’t know that it existed or what it did. But now they are beginning to understand what it is... and how to treat it.

IF YOU'RE YOUNG AND HEALTHY, your own Calcium Bomb may already be ticking. The Leading Causes of Death list is intimately linked to calcification-associated illnesses like heart disease -- and the U.S. Surgeon General estimates that getting rid of heart disease alone would increase the average lifespan by five years.

THE GOOD NEWS: Many patients are improving with new treatment aimed at heart disease calcification. Will it work for arthritis, injuries, and some cancers where the time bomb also lurks? In easy-to-understand terms, this book explores the hotly contested evidence. ... Read more

I think this book is wonderful. It is probably the best source for information on anesthesia management of congenital heart diseases, perioperative management of ischemia and ventricular failure. It is a 1999 edition, so there are a few points which need to be updated in view of recent advances in both drugs and surgical procedures, but I would still recommend this book to all the prospective cardiac anesthesiologists.

5-0 out of 5 stars The standard work in this field.
The interesting thing about this book is that it is read by everyone in the field of cardiac anesthesia. 4-0 out of 5 stars Alright
Basic Arrhythmias, I found, difficult to first grasp. The formal in which the text is laid out in is tough to read. The ECG strips were very detailed and easy to read. I have never seen any other ECG books with as many practice strips as this one. I found this book complemented what I had learned from other "paramedic" textbooks such as Sanders' book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, simple, and simple!
I have to say that this is the best college text book I have ever used. Clear, concise explanations of semi-complicated topics. I could not ask any more out of a book, except maybe lowering the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars How "Basic Arrhythmias" helped me in paramedic school.
I was an basic and intermediate EMT for years. Intimidated by learning how to interpret and analyze EKG's, it was, by far, one of the most frustrating topic for me in paramedic class. My instructor recommended the "Basic Arrhythmias" book by Gail Walraven and in no time at all interpreting and analyzing EKG's became easy and soon after I was doing it like a second nature.

Now, as an EMT instructor, I recommend "Basic Arrhythmias" to my students and I am confident that they will find peace of mind in learning EKG's, just as I did.

Thank you Gail Walraven.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for programmed instruction.
I teach a Basic EKG Course in staff development and I highly recommend this book for all levels of health care providers from unit coordinators to nurse managers. The arrythmia practice strips are excellent and having the correct answers in the back of the book allows the adult learner to verify their interpertations or seek further learning in an area. The explaination of a difficult subject is made easy. I have used this book for several years and look forward to the new editions to see what else Gail Walraven has included.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the most helpful medical books I have ever purchased
I learned disrhythmia interpretation in a weekend with the help of this book, and still pull the book off the shelf ten years later to brush up on my skills. I recommend this book for anyone needing to learn and understand how to read a cardiac monitor. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful reference work, even for non-peds and non-cards
In concise and clear language, Prof. Park explains how a
medical practitioner can diagnose alsmost any known
cardiac anomaly in a child.

Having a scientific but no medical background myself,
I found it very readable. Some knowledge of cardiac
anatomy and electrocardiography are a prerequisite.

What is especially good is Prof. Parks comprehensive
approach to the diagnosis: all posible pathologies are
listed and when a particular observation
is possible in normal patients, he doesn't forget to point
this out too.

I have only read the 2nd edition of the book (1988), so
I cannot vouch whether the latest (4th) is up to date
on recent advances in the field, be it in pacemaking
capabilities or teratogenic discoveries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pediatric Cardiology made simple and understandable
As a resident in pediatrics, you face the usual time constraints, yet you want to prepare yourselfs for electives by reading a comprehensible text. For Cardiology, I have found with Park's "Pediatric Cardiology for the Practioner" an outstanding text, which I actually prefer over more recent review articles for its easy to understand approach. The text is easy to read and is supported by the style of the figures and schemes. This book provides more than an introductory text for the pediatric resident with a general focus, it also provides a valuable and readily accessible resource for cardiology fellows. ... Read more
