3-0 out of 5 stars worth a buy if you do not mind typos
Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Techniques is an alternative to Travell's Trigger Point Manual if you do not do TP injections. It has great pictures, well explained treatment techniques (if you are up to date with your anatomy and medical terms) and lots of references. The disadvantage are typos (the editor must have had a bad day and was unable to write the German words for the references right, but also some English words are off!) Parts of the text are repeated in the book twice, what I thought is unnecessary and only adds to the number of pages but not the quality of content. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent text for the novice and experienced clinician
The text "Mobilisation of the Nervous System" is an excellent text for both the novice and experienced Physical Therapist. I bought this book to review for the Orthopedic Clinical Specialist exam, and have found it very helpful. The text does an excellent job of describing general anatomical and physiological reasoning behind commonly used evaluation and treatment techniques, as well as describing these techniques in detail. The illustrations and descriptions are good, so that if you are not practiced at these techniques you will be able to clearly see the proper postioning that is required. I would recommend this text for anyone who wants to update their clincal skills or for new Physical Therapists that want to learn more about this aspect of Physical Therapy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars clinically helpful
Although I've only taken one strain/counterstrain course (for the extremities) I use this text frequently in the clinic. The photos are clear and I can easily duplicate the positions for the neck/back although I've had no specific course instruction on those areas. Many times the techniques from this book have helped when other things haven't worked. Definitely worth checking this one out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easily organizes strain/counterstrain intervention

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text to learn chiropractic technique
I recently graduated chiropractic college and found this book to be one of the main sources to help me learn chiropractic technique. The pictures are great. It shows you how to set up and what the direction of torque is. I used this to study for the National Boards Part 2, 3 and 4. It also has a great section on how show how to translate a PRS-SP Gonstead listing into a National or Medicare listing. This section alone helped me a lot on the boards. I also used the following study guides for the preparing for the Chiropractic National Boards:
National Board of Chiropractic Part II Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
National Board of Chiropractic Part III Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations by Patrick Leonardi
National Board of Chiropractic Part IV Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (Topics: Diagnostic Imaging) Volume 1
National Board of Chiropractic Part IV Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (Topics: Case Management and Technique Practical) Volume 2 by Patrick Leonardi
These study guides helped me tremendously on the boards. They prepared me for the type of questions to get ready for. They also helped me to know which sections I was weak in before taking the boards. These 5 books helped me greatly in preparation for taking the boards. Buying these books are definitely better than taking over the boards again.

4-0 out of 5 stars "The Book Rules"
Ok, I have not "yet" finished Dr. Bergman's compilation. However, I must say that I have a unique insight into its origins, namely its editor, Thomas Bergmann. As a student of Northwestern Health Sciences University, I am privilaged to attend Dr. Bergmann's Methods III lecture and laboratory several times a week. I also am fortunate enough to sit in on his Principles and Philosophy of Chiropractic lectures. These experiences have taught me a great deal about Chiropractic science and practice in just a short few weeks as a trimester 3/10 student here at NWHS. I have learned a lot so far and continue to learn more every day. I believe Dr. bergmann to be a giant in the field of Chiropractic Technique. While my opinion may be swayed a bit and my history in the field limited, this is my opinion. Don't believe me? Buy the book!!!!!!!

Book Description

While Jean-Pierre Barral's previous books, Visceral Manipulation and Visceral Manipulation II, focus on the abdomen, in The Thorax the author turns his unique gaze to the thoracic cage and its contents.

Barrral begins by describing the thorax as an area of conflict and contrast: it must protect the organs enclosed within, yet must also allow exchanges with the neck and abdomen. Problems with either of its dual roles of protection and exchange lie at the root of most thoracic disorders. Detailed descriptions and illustrations are provided of tests for dysfunction and treatment of the nonaxial joints, fasciae and viscera of this important area of the body.

Among the special topics contained in this volume are global and local listening of the thorax; utilization of the completed Adson-Wright test; cervical attachments of the pleura; intrasternal tests and treatment; utilization of various access points to the phrenic nerve; and stretching along the orientation of the coronary arteries.

The Thorax is an important book for all practitioners who wish to broaden their skills in visceral manipulation. ... Read more

Book Description

Accessible to all health care professionals, this text provides a guide to understanding and managing back pain and is one of the premier examples of a biopsychosocial approach to medicine. The content challenges unsubstantiated beliefs regarding the best way to treat and manage back pain and presents an interdisciplinary debate on the subject. In a society where patients are demanding more effective approaches to their problems, this resource offers a radical rethink, a necessary step to achieving a more effective method of treatment. The unorthodox spirit of this material places this book at the center of the revolution taking place in the back pain area. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Back Pain:Reversing the epidemic.
The book is fascinating. Some issues discussed in this book might challenge the reader and that is the main purpose. The chapter "Back pain through history" gives an important historical perspective of the matter. "Psychologic Distress" "Beliefs about Back Pain" and "Social interactions" are of enormous importance for those who deals with "Back Care". The message is: Back pain should be a benign, self-limiting symptom and rest should be avoided. I strongly recommend this book for everyone who deals with Back Care. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Chiropractic and rehabilitation are a natural fit!
This book includes the core materials from which Dr. Liebenson crafted LACC's 3 year rehabilitation diplomate program. I attended the program here in Chicago (96 to 99), and found this book to be an invaluable supplement to those materials.

Each chapter is written by a specialist in that topic, and includes outcome assessment, Janda's assessment of muscular imbalance, the McKenzie technique, and the numerous chapters on active treatment protocols. The sections on self-stretches, patient education, and especially Chapter 18, the "Active Rehab Protocols" will take you step-by-step in analysis and management of a wide spectrum of complaints from acute to chronic.

The only thing that could be better would be the next edition, or by taking the 30 classes from LACC. This book is a must for every pracitioner who wants to improve their results with the variety of disorders that present to us each day. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars A quintessential guide for chiropractic physicians
Dr. Liebenson's book is an excellent compilation of research and expert opinion for the care of spinal and extremity related disorders. It gives the practitioner a resource to utilize for difficult as well as simple cases of musculoskeletal dysfunction that plagues millions of americans each year. The guidelines of care move from the passive (traditional chiropractic manipulation and physiological therapeutics) to the active (progressive rehabilitive exercises and patient education) in order to restore optimal functional mobility to the patient.

As a senior chiropractic intern, I have taken a rehabilitation course at Logan College of Chiropractic that uses this text as its core reference. Additionally, I have integrated the scientific principles given and have seen my patients respond well.

This text is a must for the chiropractic physician. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book contains some awesome healing methods!
I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has a dog suffering from bladder control problems and neck pain. The methods are easy to do and Dr. Kamen's explanations are as lucid as I've ever read. Fun to read. Gary Meirs, Chicago, IL.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the lay person but I wouldn't recommend all
Good, thorough explanation of chiropractic in relation to dogs. Good illustrations that help you understand the mechanism of the adjustment. As a chiropractor, I appreciate the detail Dr. Kamen goes into regarding adjustments; however, the typical dog owner may not be able to identify serious medical conditions that would be aggravated by performing a chiropractic adjustment versus a simple malalignment or "subluxation" that would respond very well. Good basic book to look at if you're thinking of taking your dog to an animal chiropractor. Great book to understand what it's all about and how your pet may benefit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goin' to the Dogs
This book has saved my dog's dignity on more than one occasion. There truly is nothing more gratifying than finding the trouble spot, based solely on observing my dog's behavior, and then being able to refer to this wonderful book for stretching and therapeutic techniques that allow my dog to feel wonderful, almost instantly. I have bought this book for at least 3 of my dog owning friends who swear by it.

5-0 out of 5 stars DogRead book of the month

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful for the practicing physician and student
Pretty good book though I was surprised about the author's comment about the late, great osteopath Larry Jones who actually developed positional release through strain/counterstrain.I remember Larry as being a friendly, helpful chap who was much more flexible regarding his techniques rather than the rigid clinician that the author describes. Regardless, the British Osteopath Chaitow goes into details of the various positional release techniques such as strain/counterstrain, functional release etc. which helps clarifies all the terminology. Chaitow also has a video which is a good acompaniment to the book. Kind of wish I had this for the boards.

This influential book is the last work of A.T. Still, the founder of osteopathy, whose ideas have greatly influenced the practice of all forms of manual medicine during this century. The book was first published in 1910 but was long out of print. In this final summation of the fundamentals of osteopathy, Dr. Still expresses his vision of health and disease, and what it means to be an osteopath. He then looks at each region of the body and describes in detail his approach to the diagnosis and treatment of specific disorders.

1-0 out of 5 stars OUTDATED AND CONSENSUS ONLY
This is merely a consensus of a limited number of people, many of whom do not practice and others with apparent private agendas. One of the supposed contributors was deceased long before it was even published. Makes me wonder how they even published it.... Pretty much a waste of time and paper.

1-0 out of 5 stars This text misrepresents its worth, full of legal holes.
This small group of 'experts' on chiropractic completely misrepresented the facts involved. They set out with an obvious purpose and this book is their attempt at a professiopnal takeover. Book Description

This book completes Jean-Pierre Barral's widely acclaimed four-volume exploration of the osteopathic implications of the dysfunctions of the internal viscera. The focus of this volume is on the pelvis, especially of women.

The introduction provides an overview of the relationships of the pelvis and spine. Tests which are particularly useful for pelvic disorders, including the genitohumeral and completed Laségue's tests, are detailed. Also included are imaging studies that demonstrate the utility of the viscersl manipulative approach to the pelvis.

Chapter 2 focuses on the bladder, and especially the treatment of stress incontinence and the effects of the various systems of pressure on the lower pelvis. The role of bladder restrictions in low back pain, lower leg problems, and hip pain is explained.

Chapter 3 discusses the uterus, focusing on the cervix. The reader will gain an appreciation for the osteopathic view of the importance of the different motions affecting the uterus, and how they can become dysfunctional.

Chapter 4 concludes the tour of the female pelvis with the uterine tubes and ovaries. The holistic osteopathic viewpoint is typified by Barral's presentation of the various elements that must work in harmony for fertilization to occur ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Much more than a text book!
The Balanced Body started out as just a text book for me when I started Massage Therapy School. Over time it has become my Deep Tissue companion. The mind/body connection explorations, together with the easy to follow lessons have made learning and practicing effective Deep Tissue Bodywork a reality. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn Deep Tissue, or take their bodywork to another level. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Textbook on Whiplash Ever
A Tour de Force! Is there going to be a Third Edition? Let us hope so, given Arthur Croft's ability to consume, digest and make palatable to us the most recent research on the topic of whiplash. Fortunately, Dr. Croft is still writing (see his articles in SPINE with co-author Dr. Michael Freeman), and still at the forefront of the profession. As a chiropractic physician, his contributions are all the more important in the medical world, which often borrows from alternative health without crediting it. Not so with Croft, who is credited in medical circles worldwide. A thoroughly readable, well-referenced and enjoyable textbook which will open your mind to a syndrome (group of injuries, really) so misunderstood.

Any physician without this text on his/her shelves should not be treating persons injured by whiplash.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bar None - The best there is
If you are a physician who treats whiplash patients, or an attorney trying to understand the hows and whys, this book is the absolute BEST there is. 'Nuff Said.

5-0 out of 5 stars The True Encyclopedia of Whiplash
Croft and Foreman are to be greatly commended on this work, the BEST in the field of whiplash traumatology. Apparently, there will be a 3rd edition coming soon.

The nonsense coming from Canada this year, including the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) Cassidy study (April 2000) and anything that Robert Ferrari has written, and is likely to write (Whiplash "Encyclopedia"), is an utter shame. The author of the recent NEJM study (Cassidy) has been accused of falsifying data (Emma Bartfay, PhD vs. Cassidy), and the views of QTF and Ferrari on chronic whiplash have been refuted over and over again.

Research in this field is of two types, with one out-weighing the other exponentially: insurance company-sponsored stuff such as Cassidy's, the "Quebec Task Force" or "QTF" study(1995), and much of the Ferrari literature IS VASTLY OUTWEIGHED by the other 95% of the university-based and engineering research that refutes it.

This book, especially in its new edition (pending), is and will be the definitive treatise on whiplash-related injuries. It is not written for the layperson, and covers complex medical topics. However, for physicians and health care professionals working with the whiplash-injured, it is indispensable.

When all the hubbub surrounding the latest weak studies from Canada subsides, Foreman and Croft's work will still be standing tall and unscathed. And that is because these two authors understand the difference between a strong study and a weak one. It is NOT true that you can use the research to prove anything. For example, the April 2000 NEJM study by Cassidy et al. states that when you remove the tort system, whiplash-injured persons miraculously heal faster. But upon closer inspection, it turns out that the authors of this study equate "recovery" with "return to work". They did not report on the physical exam findings of their research subjects at the time of claim closure (so-called "recovery"), so we do NOT really have an honest study.

With Ferrari, he is just so out in left field that one cannot imagine how he survives. The only answer must be that insurance company money is paying for his "research". Is it? Ferrari has been refuted over and over again by Croft and Michael Freeman, DC, PhD, MPH in the literature (see SPINE 1998 and 1999). Ferrari is actually on record as saying that chronic whiplash pain is from a psychological disturbance.

The 1995 QTF study is on record as saying that pain "is not harmful". These are doctors?

Of course, if you have had a brain injury and have been diagnosed with MTBI (mild traumatic brain injury), which is often permanent, there is psychological disturbance. But this is not what Ferrari argues. He basically believes that the millions and millions of chronic whiplash sufferers world-wide are all faking it.

Nikolai Bogduk, one of the top, if not the top, researchers in the world in the study of pain, has conclusively proved that whiplash injuries, even at VERY LOW SPEEDS (less than 5 mph) do damage the cervical zygapophyseal (facet capsules) or "z" joints of the neck, and that those injured in this way have chronic pain, and often full (actually too much) range of motion in their necks. The recent excellent crash tests by Ono, Kanno, Siegmund, Brault, Croft himself, and many, many others all confirm Bogduk's findings in a very conclusive way.

The fact that "researchers" like Cassidy, Ferrari, Russell, and now the NEJM never cite these authors, who are the most respected in the field, is certainly suspect.

I look forward to the next edition of this book, which should address all of the misinformation being propagated by the insurance industry and its representatives (do they fear an even larger class-action suit than big tobacco? You betcha!). Then we can all know the real science, well-written and more thoroughly referenced than any book on whiplash to date.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on whiplash to date!
It is not often that you find authors who have so thoroughtly referenced a subject. It is written with a good command of the English language and is carefulle reasoned.

This book should finally lay to rest the myth that whiplash is somehow "not real", a notion that the insurance industry is most likely propagating.

This gem of a book is a must for all clinicians involved in the care and treatment of whiplash and its related disorders. It is also essential reading for all those insurance industry claims reps who are truly concerned about their insured injured persons, and not just their jobs!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on the subject of Whiplash Injuries.
The book is well written and provides and in depth look at the diagnosis and treatment of Whiplash (neck injuries). A must read for all health care providers that are serious about treating these injures. May be interesting for some motivated readers not in the health care field. ... Read more
