5-0 out of 5 stars Brief, to the point but complete
As a med student this book is a great intro text to understanding EKG's. Its written simple and to the point, and re-highlights key points, such as the 5 key malignancies in PVC's to detect. I doubt it would be sufficient for a cardiologist, but for med student/basic IM residency should suffice.

5-0 out of 5 stars The title doesn't lie!
A colleague recommended this book to me after I lamented that Dubin's competing text was amusing and easy to understand, but didn't really foster any permanent functional understanding of EKGs. Like Dubin's text, Thaler's EKG Book takes a leisurely approach to deconstructing the EKG. However, Thaler's text is a much more functional guide, offering better explanations in a more comprehensive approach to interpreting EKGs. Thaler's text works not only because it is easy to understand, but also because it provides more clinical scenarios, and has a more complete discussion of a wide variety of abnormal EKGs. This book is far superior to Dubin's. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The title says it all
As a resident with many years of medical training behind me, I've used my share of ECG textbooks. The two best books for the beginner medical student/intern to use when learning the ECG are Thaler's book (this one) and Dubin's Rapid Interpretation. Both explain the EKG very well, but in my opinion the clarity and simplicity of the physiological and EKG explanations in Thaler's book are unsurpassed.

Despite being a rather slim volume, it is remarkably comprehensive. There is even a chapter towards the end on rare, non cardiac diseases with EKG manifestations. With due respect, the reviewer who said Thaler's book lacks sufficient information doesn't have a clue. Its really very complete, for everyone except Cardiologists and Cardiac fellows, who will definitely prefer Marriot's.

For everyone else, The Only Ekg Book You'll Ever Need is the only Ekg book you'll ever need.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT INTRODUCTION TO EKG'S
This book was awesome!! I started with Dubin's, which was okay, but it just wasn't giving me the basics. This book was very helpful in understanding the basics of EKG's and really helped me on my exams. Easy to read- I read a few chapters between study sessions and I found it is a great reference book to supplement classes.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too superficiel for people, who wants to master ECG's
I have read this book, its not the worst book on the market, but is most definitely not the best!
It merely gives you a first hand approach to basic ECG interpretation!
But it's ok as an introduction to ECG's, but don't expect that you are a ECG wiz after you read it! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars has its ups and downs
The book has absolutely everything you need to know word-for-word to get certified in NALS. It comes from more of a nursing perspective so little details like how to operate the jackson-reiss and anatomy of the airway will be extremely redunant for respiratory therapists.

I found the CD-ROM included was very buggy in my computer. While it was helpful to see everything happening at once, the videos' content should have been more closely watched, since during a chapter about mechanical ventilation saying bag at around a rate of 40, will clearly show the person at the head ventilating at a rate of closer to 70 or 80.

5-0 out of 5 stars best so far
I'm going to make it short. I just passed my neo resuscitation recertification because of this book. What makes this book so special is its illustrations (each illustration is worth 1000 words or so)and its flowing text.If you need this type of book, than I believe this one is the best so far on American market; there is one better in Europe and Australia, but they have slightly diferent guidelines which may be better than ours, but hey, maybe one they we get to the point where we have world guidelines. Believe me, I have researched alot to find the best book on this topic, and this book is it. I recommend it to all MDs, critical RNs, neonatal respiratory therapists(RRT-NPS)and other medical staff that is often in contact with little bambinos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Improved Version
Text flows well and I was able to ace the course. Great reference to keep in your locker at work for review, too

5-0 out of 5 stars Neonatal Resuscitation Made Easy
NRP has been streamlined to enhance the readers learning and retention of the resuscitation guidelines. This book is easy reading...cover to cover! Key learning points are emphasized throughout the book. Each chapter is carefully laid out with case studies to reinforce the content covered. The reader builds on the foundation of the previous chapter(s) thus progressing one from a basic to complex resuscitation scenario. Comprehension questions are found through various points of each chapter with a test at the end of each chapter. The book is excellent not to mention the CD-ROM as an added bonus. Even if you are due to renew your NRP under the old guidelines(through June 2001) this book will provide you with all the information you need to know. Thanks Marla!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Learning tool!
Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation provides very easy to follow information as well as hands-on excercises in the practice of Neonatal Resucitation. An excellent read for the emergency worker who would like to get more information on this very specialized field in the practice. Very easy to follow even for the non-native english speaker. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Clinician's Critique: Acute Care Handbook for P. T.
Congratulations to the authors of this valuable reference text! The Acute Care Handbook is, first of all, anything but a "handbook" in the traditional sense. It is lengthy and detailed, qualities which would make a more leisure-oriented read a sure bet for the bedside table. But, this useful book is not for dozing through. Rather, it makes for much easier quick searches or in-depth reviews of most topics critical to effective acute care physical therapists.

Two brief observations that might strengthen the utility of this reference book: First, a chapter on "Trauma or Multi-Trauma Patients" would be beneficial. Also, increased use of illustrations would enhance the book's impact.

Overall, though, this text has been a wonderful addition to my reference library. If you are an acute care therapist now, going to be one soon, or just need to "brush up" on this phase of rehabilitation, this book will definitely meet your reference needs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good effort, but may be improved
My criticisms, of this book, are as follows:

    1. There are references to many classic papers, which is EXCELLENT. However, in ADDITION, it would be nice to see some more recent references. Please do NOT remove the classic references in a future edition. Add to it.

2.A bit more detailed pathophysiology/pathogenesis will be nice. Currently it is already very good, but I think can be improved upon slightly.

    3. When recommending treatments, please put in the full drug name, doses, regimen, route etc, throughout the whole textbook. Don't just write condidtion X can be treated with drug Y. At 3.00 AM in the ICU, it would be nice if users didn't have to look up an additonal book just to check dosing etc while their patients crash through the floor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Re: Jennifer SALABSKY's Comment
I disagree with the rating given to this book by the new RN below. The RN found that the book did not meet her needs and therefore rated it 2 stars. However, this text was NOT WRITTEN for a nurse audience - it's a comprehensive critical medicine textbook for doctors and medical students, and it does a superb job for the intended readers. There are many nursing ICU textbooks available which SALABSKY will probably find more suitable for her needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb manual for patient care in the critical care setting
The Intensive Care Unit Manual by Paul N. Lanken MD is excellent for houseofficers and fellows caring for patients in the critical care setting, including medical, surgical, obstetric, and trauma ICUs. It's also a worthwhile book for senior medical students with a solid background in medical pathophysiology who have completed rotations in medicine and surgery and are eager to maximize on the ICU experience. This Manual's strength lies in it's easy-to-read, detailed, yet succinct text on pathophysiology, differential diagnoses, management, and complications. As a former medical student, houseofficer, Renal fellow, and Chief Resident, reading the short chapters in this Manual will also aid in asking well-thought out questions to the appropriate consultants (e.g., neurologist, cardiac surgeon, hepatologist, nephrologist). Though it is not a "pocket-sized" manual, it is an outstanding paperback manual that is comprehensive yet portable and easily would serve as the sole bedside/ call room reference book in the acute ICU setting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best current MICU text available. A MUST for housestaff!
Dr. Lanken has written a superb text for medical housestaff (and all other health care professionals.) Unlike other MICU texts, Dr. Lanken's text is readable, lucid, and relevant. He has pulled together experts in pulmonary, cardiac, renal, hematology, trauma, gastroenterology, ob/gyn, and infectious diseases to write concise, practical chapters regarding MICU patients and their individual specialties. Diagrams are clear, the prose is minimally jargonned, and everything is tersely written. Furthermore, Dr. Lanken's text is the only text with recent references. Having been an on-call MICU resident, if there is one book I had to have on-call, it would be this one. HIGHLY recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only if you are a doctor or medical student, then buy this
This book looked wonderful until I actually received it and started reading it. It was a book written for doctors by doctors. What a disappointment, especially since I am a registered nurse with minimal ICU skills, and was looking for this book under NURSING references. If you are a medical student, I highly recommend it, but otherwise, save your money!! ... Read more
