4-0 out of 5 stars Thank you
I have been so busy reading. Sorry I didn't rate sooner.

4-0 out of 5 stars Diabetes Basics
This book by the American Diabetes Association does a commendable job of reviewing many of the basic issues surrounding diabetes. It is a nice starting point for a newly diagnosed patient but does not offer much detail for the more seasoned person with diabetes. The information is well laid out and succinctly explained. For those looking for more details and references I would recommend the ENCYCLOPEDIA of DIABETES by Petit and Adamec.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great reference guide to have if you are a diabetic.
This book is a great guide to have if you are a diabetic. The information is written well and easy to understand. You will go away a more informed person about your diabetes. It has truly helped me to gain the knowledge I need to help me cope with this disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Found it very informative and easy to read
The book is well organized and filled with many useful facts that Diabetics need to know about and gives supportive tips throughout. A very well written edition and one that should be in every Diabetic household. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for healthy restaurant eating.
This is an excellent guide for helping you eat healthy food at restaurants. The restaurants listed are many of the major chain restaurants, especially fast foods. In addition to hamburgers and pizza, Denny's and Baker's Square are included to help you find nutrition information you can use for coffee shops in general.
PRO: The only book I've found that includes American Diabetic Association Exchange Diet information in addition to information on other nutrients for other diet or food plans.
Cons: The only criticism I have of this book (and a minor criticism at that) is its lack of information about Greek or Japanese restaurant food because they are not chain restaurants. Nevertheless, this book is quite extensive in giving you the nutrition information on many foods found in popular restaurants.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book!
This is a great reference book to have on hand if you eat out in restaurants often. I finally am living in an area where most of the restaurants listed in the book can be found. I really need to get another one to keep in the car.

4-0 out of 5 stars Provides nutrition information; fast-food restaurants
This volume had detailed nutritional data (calories, fat contect, fat grams, sodium, cholesterol content, etc.) on many fast-food items. Included are common items from McDonalds, Wendy's, Arbys, Taco Bell, KFC, Subway, Hardee's, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts to name a few. Also included the equivalent food exchanges for the foods listed.

For many restaurant chains it highlights some of the 'healthier' items available.

The data has been compiled on many items from these restaurants, but not every menu selection is listed.

A useful guide to keep at your desk or in your car to assist in making healthier eating decisions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Integrates diabetes into a vairety of lifestyles
The authors address both the medical and the emotional aspects of diabetes. There is relatively more on the medical and dietary aspects of diabetes than on the emotional side.

I particularly liked the fact that they discuss diabetes regimens for individuals who can only manage intermediate or loose control. Tight control can be dangerous for individual who are unable to maintain a diet or test themselves frequently.

I was a little surprised at what they consider intensive control. They say that such individuals typically test themselves 2-4 times per day. (1-2 for Type II diabetes) Personally, I would never be able to safely maintain my level of control with only with so few tests per day.

A few of the suggestions in this book, such as prescription dietary aids, are out of date. Still, this is an excellent overall guide to having a balanced life while living with diabetes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspired changes that saved Husband's health
I read this book the day after my husband was diagnosed with diabetes at an emergency room-his blood sugar was 406. The doctor prescribed a low dose of Glucatrol and set up an appointment to see a specialist. I also read Enter the Zone and The Homocystine Revolution that week. These apparently unrelated books all stressed the insulin reaction to various foods and essentially recommended the same diet. We immediately put their recommendations into practice besides having him fast after 4:00 p.m. daily. His blood sugar count declined each day. At the end of 7 days he suffered a hypoglycemic reaction, so he stopped the medicine. Since then he has taken no medicine and controls his blood sugar strictly by diet. This book was instrumental in him regaining his health! I recommend it to others constantly. I also recommend The Glycemic Revolution is great to know how to choose the right foods and Magic Beans is my cookbook of choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must read" for diabetics and non-diabetics alike.
OK, so I'm not a diabetic, but I know quite a few people who are.... so I'm a bit curious. I figured I'd do a quick glance through "Diabetes: A Guide to Living Well" and call it a day. I had no idea I would read Dr. Gary Arsham's entire book from start to finish! I was fascinated with the ease of style, the engaging examples and the life saving programs Drs.Arsham and Lowe bring to their audience. An intelligent doctor and a diabetic himself, Gary Arsham has truly found the way to live well with diabetes. I've bought, loaned and/or recommended this book to dozens of acquaintences. All have found the information cutting edge and extremely valuable. Definitely a book to be read by diabetics and non-diabetics alike.... just a bit tough to keep on your bookshelf!!. << ... Book Description

Now in paperback, this vivid and often beautifully written account of the realities of diabetes (Chicago Tribune) is essential reading for diabetics and their friends and families. Lisa Roney was diagnosed with diabetes just before her twelfth birthday. This is her candid and exquisitely written account of how the disease directly affects the choices she makes every day, in every aspect of her life, from food and exercise to career and family. What sets this apart from other testimonies about living with an illness is Roney's remarkable willingness to reveal the usually hidden emotional consequences of her affliction: erosion of her self-esteem, feelings of vulnerability, the influence on her sexual choices, and heightened awareness of mortality. Full of wisdom, humor, and practical advice, Sweet Invisible Body will be welcomed by diabetics and their friends and families who have never before had a spokesperson as articulate, honest, and insightful as Lisa Roney.

2-0 out of 5 stars An accurate, but whiny, description of life with diabetes.
Lisa Roney captures beautifully how it feels to be a pre-teen diagnosed with a chronic disease. I, too, was twelve when I started taking insulin. In fact, the trials she experiences with her diabetes very closely parallel what I have also gone through. However, I found the incredibly whiny nature of the discourse very hard to take. It truly does seem as if she blames all of her disappointments in life on her disease. I don't feel that this book would be inspiring or even helpful to someone recently diagnosed with diabetes. I know very few people, chronic disease or not, who are so mired in their own self-absorptive depression. Also, what the heck is all that strange cataloging of her friends, her boyfriends, the detailed contents of her apartment, etc.? The book started out wonderfully, then digressed into a long, rambling whine. I personally feel sorry that Ms. Roney has had such a bad time of it, but I just can't empathize. And this is despite the fact that countless times I have gone though every single diabetes-associated malady that she describes, and then some.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely awful
This book seems to be the author's search to justify her existence. It's self-indulgent twaddle.

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1969 at the age of 4, and although the disease can and does bring challenges, the manner in which Lisa Roney shows her lack of self-esteem and her need to blame her disease for any and all failings in her life is pure blindness. She simultaneously claims to be dying from her disease - as would we all be, in her argument - and yet refusing to "admit" to people that she has the disease. She despairs at the lack of understanding while not being willing to tell people what she endures. She appears all too willing to air it all publicly in this self-indulgent, depressing book.

I sincerely hope that Lisa Roney has learned - at long last - to be at peace with her diabetes and not to expect others to either overlook or focus too heavily on it. In this book she doesn't seem to know which focus she wants "outsiders" to have, let alone herself.

1-0 out of 5 stars depressing and uninspiring
I was very disappointed with this book. I have had Type 1 diabetes since I was 15 and I am 26 now. I couldn't relate at all to Ms. Roney's prolonged focus on being and "outcast", and I don't understand the logic of blaming failed romances and friendships on diabetes. I was hoping to find a book about someone who learned to accept and live with this disease. The author has a way to go to reach that point.

5-0 out of 5 stars I AM NOT ALONE...
Unlike most books about diabetes, this one takes care to explore the emotional implications of this potentially deadly disease. Lisa Roney should be commended for this beautifully written book, which aptly describes and indeed, paints a stark picture of the realities of life with diabetes. This is not a typical "how to cope" book, but rather, an intimate and revealing account of one woman's battle with a condition that forces her to define her life, her loves, her goals and her future while struggling to understand herself amidst the havoc wreaked by chronic illness.
Having had the disease myself for almost a decade, I have read many books on the subject of diabetes. This is the first that has truly helped me to know that I am not alone. Lisa Roney has enabled me to understand my feelings about myself and this insidious condition, and indeed, for the first time in years, to articulate my struggle, my feelings, and my needs to those around me. This book is required reading for anyone living with diabetes, and it is certainly recommended reading for those who love them.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Author That Can Relate!
I thought this book was a very real and true account of someone living with Juvenile Diabetes. I like the fact that the author touches on the emotions and anger of the disease. It is just not a book about eating right and taking insulin. It goes deeper than that. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 11 and I am now 19. This book closely relates to what I had to go through and what I am still experiencing. It made me feel that I am not the only one. When reading this I became more comfortable with my diabetes. It really helped me evalute my feelings about having a chronic illness. ... Read more

Book Description

If you’ve been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, you’re probably concerned about a host of health issues and may already be thinking of the coming dietary changes. As your doctor probably explained, a good eating plan, low weight, and an active lifestyle are among the most important factors in limiting the disease’s impact and in continuing to live a full and healthy life. But you don’t know where to begin.

Enter Carol Guber, a twenty-year veteran of the food industry who holds a master’s in nutrition and is a nationally recognized authority on food and nutrition. When she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, she refused to accept the diagnosis lying down.Realizing that she was going to have to approach life in a new and vibrant fashion, Carol launched herself into what she describes as “guerilla warfare” against diabetes. She knew she was in for some changes, having been accustomed to gourmet meals and the finest, richest foods. And she also knew the consequences of ignoring her doctor’s advice. With her trademark gusto, she was soon enjoying a whole new menu and working out unabashedly alongside gym babes.

Carol tried to choose physical activities that would be fun and dynamic, knowing that she had to enjoy herself as well as engage her mind, body and spirit in order to stay healthy. So she began running on a treadmill. She started to lift light weights. She even took up boxing. After several months, her spirited war on diabetes had helped her lose weight and reduce her glucose by 40 percent. Now she hosts workshops for men and women trying to develop their own diabetes-fighting lifestyle. She likes to say that you have to make a whole new life for yourself–often one that ends up being fuller and more active than you’ve ever dreamed. In her Type 2 Diabetes Life Plan, Carol shares her encouraging insight, bringing us with her along the path toward a richer and more vital life with diabetes.

Going beyond her personal success, Carol provides a complete guide to a medical condition that is becoming increasingly widespread. 3-0 out of 5 stars Field guide? more like a short trip...
A field guide may be a quick and helpful orientation to the wilderness, but ultimately leave you lost. As someone who is newly diagnosed with diabetes, I wanted all the information I could get about diabetes, its treatment, and suggestions for coping with it. This book left me with more questions than answers. I'd say if you want to help your friends and relatives understand diabetes, this book may be helpful, especially if they have short attention spans. But I wouldn't recommend it for someone who is headed off into the wilderness of learning about diabetes and needs a reliable guide that can help you cope with unexpected dangers. ... Read more

Book Description

An estimated 16 million Americans (more than 7 percent of the population) suffer from Type 2 diabetes-a shocking increase of 49 percent since 1990. Of all the major diseases, diabetes is the ultimate self-help condition, for diet and exercise are the keys to combating it. However, Type 2 is also an inordinately lonely and confusing disease. It's hard not to feel isolated when so many social events center around food and drink that may be off-limits to diabetics. And because there's no one-size-fits-all diet, because symptoms are often hidden, and because the impact of uncontrolled diabetes is usually years away, diabetics can feel adrift as they search for answers. Even maintaining an exercise routine may be impeded by depression, which often accompanies the disease. ... Read more

Book Description

This book consists of a series of 82 precise, easy-to-read articles by internationally renowned scientistsand emphasizes the practical approach to HPLC with minimal theory, although the underlying principles for peptide and protein separations are clearly expressed. All of the major modes of microbore, ultrafast and analytical HPLC are discussed, including size-exclusion, ion-exchange, reversed-phase, hydrophobic interaction, and affinity and immunoaffinity chromatography. A section on preparative HPLC, including displacement techniques, is also presented. Problem-solving approaches to the separation of various classes of biologically active peptides and proteins are thoroughly explored, while the importance of peptide standards for monitoring column performance and for optimizing separation conditions is emphasized. Several articles focus on the choice of the correct detection method (electrochemical, UV, fluorescence), as well as the need for a proper knowledge of approaches to column and instrument maintenance and trouble-shooting. A section on predictive approaches deals with both computer simulation of peptide separations and peptide structure. The book also includes complementary techniques to HPLC, as well as other useful applications of HPLC. It enables both novice and experienced chromatographers to realize the full potential of this extremely powerful technique, in the process making an important contribution to scientific literature. ...
