5-0 out of 5 stars Big applause!
This book is crucial to the life of a medical transcriptionist. Updated annually, as the world of pharmaceuticals changes on an ongoing basis, Saunders has the king of drug word books. They cross-reference medications, list info for the generic and brand name drugs under each (e.g. "acetominophen" and "Tylenol" with same info) to minimize double-lookup, unlike the so-called "Quick Look Drug Book." Experimental drugs and discontinued products are listed together with the rest, so one does not have to access a separate appendix. Strengths of dosage (20 mg, 40 mg, etc.) are given, generics are not capitalized, etc., all critical info for an MT. Also included is a "sound-alike" list as well as "sound-alike" info within each individual entry, which often is very helpful. There are other similar publications out there and I've tried several, but Saunders is clearly the best IMO for the transcriptionist's needs. ... Read more

Book Description

From the simple and common to the complex and rare, this book contains subtleties, distinctions and nuances of Chinese medicine never found in beginners texts. Whether for translational or clinical application, it presents the concepts of Chinese medicine exactly as they would come to the mind of a Chinese physician speaking or writing in their native language.

Arranged as a classical dictionary, definitions are provided in English alphabetic order, and include the english term, the source Chinese term, its Pinyin transliteration (including spoken tone), pronunciation, etymology, and one or more definitions as applied in Chinese medicine. Terms used within definitions are cross-referenced and disease and symptom descriptions include the standard therapies applied in the People's Republic of China. Each definition is referenced to one or more Chinese source. In all, it lists the characters, Pinyin, translations, and definitions for more than 10,000 medical concepts, including treatments for the patterns catalogued, 2,000 formulas, 1,700 natural drugs, and 1,500 acupoints.

The definitions and treatments are drawn from clinically authoritative Chinese medical sources, all of which are cited. The many useful features include a full set of English common and commercial names for medicinal substances, as well as standard Latin scientific names. Western medical correspondences are noted, as is nomenclature put forward by the World Health Organization. The index is comprehensive and fully cross referenced; it also includes lesser-used terms and nomenclature so it may be used as a translators' glossary. There is one foreword by Chen Keji, the pioneer of integrated Chinese medicine, and another by Paul Unschuld, the renowned sinologist.

This is a valuable work that will provide rapid access to an enormous amount of information for the student, researcher, or clinician, and is sure to become the new reference source for academic studies, international exchange, and training in Chinese medicine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Precision
The issue with all texts on Chinese medicine in English is translation. Given his penchant for ridiculously arcane terminology, Wiseman is no different. The outstanding feature of this dictionary and other Wiseman works, however, is the marriage of translation to Chinese, meaning one can examine his interpretation against the actual text. Pinyin is an obviously helpful bridge to understanding Chinese, but seeing the actual characters adds much to the understanding of TCM theory and application.

Such careful scholarship is worthy of acclaim.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Serious TCM Students and Practitioners
It'll take you forever to get through it- it's big, and it's a dictionary. Wiseman is the only scholar out there who has advanced a standard for Chinese medical translation. Until someone comes up with something better, it's the language we'll use. This dictionary is also packed with loads of useful clinical info you won't find anywhere else. It's pricey, but if you want the real Chinese Medicine, I'd suggest you keep it on your list.

4-0 out of 5 stars A colossal effort
The dictionary is a labor of love on the part of Nigel Wiseman and Feng Ye. As others have often observed, writing a dictionary is a thankless job and indeed, the authors have received little credit and much blame for their efforts. The price of admission is steep, the subject is still exotic in the English-speaking world, and many of the term choices are gratingly neological; such a work goes underappreciated for these and other reasons.

There is no question that many of the language decisions made in this work fly in the face of conventional approaches to translation. A translator by training before taking up the study of Chinese medicine, I can say without hesitation that this was not how translation was presented to us as students. The idea of a mechanically consistent, bidirectional set of terminological equivalents would have been frowned upon by my mentors. The goal of the method, however, is both laudable and clearly stated: to create English language Chinese medical terms than can be directly traced back to their Chinese origins by means of a dictionary. This approach is rife with difficulties, but in this early stage of importing Chinese medicine, it seems to be the road we must inevitably travel. I've been known to openly express frustration with some of the work at hand (which is, notably, very much a work in progress), but I must admit that it is an enormous contribution to the field and that it is infinitely preferable to no such work at all.

The Dictionary is organized alphabetically by English language terms, with Chinese characters and Pinyin romanization with tone marks, as well as an English-language definition, for each entry. The quality and length of each entry varies considerably, and one must often read several entries scattered throughout the dictionary in order to understand the meaning of a single term, but then, that is the nature of Chinese medicine. The Dictionary definitions, despite their inconsistency, comprise a wealth of information previously not available in English about a wide range of Chinese medical topics.

The index includes both English and Pinyin terms. There is no way to look up terms by their Chinese characters, so one must use additional works, such as Wiseman's English-Chinese Chinese-English Dictionary of Chinese Medicine, when trying to read a Chinese text. This is disappointing, but such an index would have added another 150-200 pages or so to the already massive size of the book, which would simultaneously have further increased the cost.

Those who wish to read English-language publications using Wiseman and Ye's terminology will find they cannot do without this dictionary. Students and practitioners who wish to experience more of the world view of Chinese medicine will find many rewards between its covers. Would-be translators (myself included) will discover a valuable resource in the Dictionary, despite the persistent need for several others. It is only by use that the true value of this book may be revealed, and only by use that its shortcomings may be addressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A New Cornerstone for Chinese Medicine in the West
Every so often a book comes into existence that exerts a powerful influence on the zone of life for which it was intended. This new dictionary falls into this category. Since its arrival it has already become a lightning rod for discussion and debate concerning the whole conduct of the translation and therefore the transmission of traditional Chinese medicine into English and English-speaking areas. The authoring of dictionaries is a thankless task. Samuel Johnson, no stranger to this work, noted that mankind tends to consider the writers of dictionaries as the slaves of science. The work of Nigel Wiseman and Feng Ye reflects a deep sense of service to their chosen discipline, but far from being slaves they stand in the vanguard of a liberating force that is developing in Chinese medical studies. We all owe them our thanks for having put so much information between the covers of a single volume that can be used to forward the development of deeper understanding of this complex subject. To illustrate the utility of the book, I just came from a visit to the office of a friend, an MD who practices acupuncture to whom I recommended the dictionary when it was first publised. "Thanks for turning me on to this book," he said, pointing to the Practical Dictionary beside his desk. "I use it every day." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
I have found this book very valuable. I am a medical student and my Spanish is intermediate. I can communicate well on a conversational level, but medical terms are a whole different story. This book is excellent. Not only do I use it to look up the proper medical terms, but it also provides examples of more common terms used to describe conditions that are easier for patients to understand. What has been very helpful is a systems-based guide to interview questions. For example it provides you with a list of common questions you would ask a patient who complains of abdominal pain. It also provides a concise review of verb tenses and noun declension. My copy of this book is very well loved. It has seen me through four years of employment in the ER and four years of medical school. Perhaps the mentally challenged reviewers who gave this book poor reviews should learn to read before attempting to learn a different language :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Medical Spanish Dictionary I've Used
In the past 10 years, as a medical interpreter and health care professional, I've tried at least half a dozen medical Spanish dictionaries and this is by far the best, most accurate, and most comprehensive. It has much more of the technical vocabulary one would use in conversation with other health care providers than any other, yet still has the words that patients understand. I highly recommend it, though it may be a bit overwhelming for beginners -- it's not as useful as a "quick reference" for someone who doesn't speak a lot of Spanish.

4-0 out of 5 stars Say what?!
I have to wonder which book the negative reviewers are reviewing.

As to the complaint that there is no pronunciation guide to English or Spanish, for example, the first page of the Spanish side starts with a description of the Spanish alphabet followed by a pronunciation guide to Spanish; corresponding features appear on the very first page of the English side, too.

I am a professional Spanish translator, and I refer to this book for specialized medical terms when I translate. I also make use of the abbreviation conversion table (which, unfortunately, is alphabetized only in English alphabetical order, making it hard to go from a Spanish abbreviation to an English one), and the helpful conversion tables for roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

The main fault with this book is that there could be more. If you are looking for diseases, conditions, or symptoms, or even sample examination interview questions (organized by topic in an appendix), it's great! But if you are looking for the translations for medicines, you can pretty much forget about finding them (acetaminophen? amoxicillin? pseudoephedrine? hardly uncommon medicines, but not in here), but perhaps that is a subject worthy of its own separate volume. Still, if you are wanting help talking to your Spanish-speaking patients about their illnesses, conditions, and treatments--and assuming that you have no reason to use the Spanish words for the medicines anyway--this is an excellent resource to buy, to get familiar with, and to have on hand. I always recommend it to any doctor, nurse, or paramedic who asks me for a good Spanish medical reference.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Translators
The contents of the dictionary are very inadequate for translators who need to know the English term for the Spanish one and only serves as a mediocre tool for Health Care Professionals who want to learn a few Spanish words here and there. It is not at all comprehensive. I give it one star because the design of the book cover is attractive.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misunderstanding caused by book description
This dictionary does not include any guide for pronunciation of English or Spanish words. A proper dictionary should include some phoenetic guide to the pronunciation. The review incorrectly implies this is included ... Read more

All I can say is GET THIS BOOK! I wish I had it last semester, but it saved my life for anatomy at the tail end of last semester, and is carrying me through anatomy 2 and the rest of nursing school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for any medical student.
I'm a nursing student, and I use this book all of the time. Keep it next to you when you study, there are going to be tons of words that you don't know in your studies. Don't be the student that knows the answer but doesn't know what it means.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mosby's Dictionary
A very handy reference book for anyone in the medical profession. It allows you to find information quickly and answers basic questions about diagnoses, signs and symptoms and medical terms. It is written in clear and concise language. It has colorful and descriptive pictures. I wish I had this in nursing school years ago!! Recently, I've used it as an RN in Home Healthcare practice and as a coding/compliance auditor when reviewing documentation. Overall, it has saved me a lot of time and allowed me to look up details that I didn't know easily. I keep it with me as part of my essential books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Small Print
Even people with good eye sight will struggle with this...had I known that I would have got the large print version. As for the thesaurus itself.. it is pretty good. There are a few little code symbols you have to remember and you may have to bounce around the book a bit to get that "perfect" word. It is full of words though and probably a good buy for kids grades 8-12. If it would have had just a little bit larger print I would have rated it 4 stars but being able to read it is an important thing...especially if you have to work on something a little later in the evening when your eyes are slightly strained all ready. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book if you want to really learn your medical terms
I bought this book as a requirement for an independent study course. I wasn't required to buy the sixth edition but I did just the same and I found I made the right decision. I found the material easy to read with a friendly tone and an extremely useful presentation. The layout of the chapters and the excercises provided helped me to clearly understand, use, and learn the terms. I worked on this book without the aid of a teacher or classroom setting and I feel this book has made the difference between just memorizing material for a later test and really knowing the terms. Also, the CD-ROM that comes with this book made an excellent reference aid and a perfect way to test and reinforce my knowledge. (Clicking on the "figure" button in the multi-media program yielded some interesting surprises) As a result of using this book, I was able to achieve an excellent mark in the Medical Terminology module of my independent study course. I would recommend it to anyone who wants or needs to know their medical terms for any health related field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Way to Learn Medical Terminology
This book by Chabner is designed to help the premedical professional learn terminology by teaching how to break words apart and decode their meaning. Each chapter has a review of a specific topic and provides many opportunities, at the end of each chapter, to practice and review the material covered. The CD is the best part because it helps break up some of the monotony of learning the numerous prefixes, suffixes and word roots. The end of the book provides appendices for medical abbreviations, formulas and measurement. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to learn medical terminology.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best in medical terminology.....
This book is the best one I've seen on medical terminology. There are numerous charts and pictures to further enhance the learning process, as well as many workbook-type exercises to test your knowledge. By the time you finish a chapter, you REALLY understand the information covered. I'm so glad to have the opportunity to study from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent as a teacher and a resource
I used this text for an online course in medical terminology and was more than satisfied with the results. The author structured the book in such a way that it appeals to all learning styles--visual, auditory (using the audio CD or tape), and even movement (using the accompanying CD interactive exercises). Programmed learning is employed by the author and is a very effective way of teaching this "new language." I would recommend this book to anyone entering the allied health fields.

5-0 out of 5 stars _Quick and Easy_ Does It
I once knew a fellow who told me that he spoke only eleven *modern* languages fluently. When he told me, I wished that I could touch his hand and what he knew would osmose to me.

Of course learning a new language is not that easy. And except for the fact that one does not have to learn a new grammar, learning a new terminology is the same. It takes *work*. What can make these learning processes easier is having a teacher who knows how to organize the material so that learning associations come more readily.

There's no osmosis. Peggy Leonard does an outstanding job of organizing the material so that one can most easliy learn medical terminology. _Quick and Easy_ does it. ... Read more

Book Description

The Pocket Medical Spanish Book is a self-use interpreting aid for medical professionals. This spiral bound, flip chart-like book includes over 400 medical phrases divided into 12 useful sections such as General Questions, Pain, Chest Problems, Abdominal Problems, Ob/Gyn, etc. On the professional's side of each page is an English phrase, a Spanish phrase, and phonetics of how to pronounce it. The other side, the patient's side, has the same Spanish phrase in large letters so that the patient can read along. All you need to know is how to say in Spanish is "Yes," "No," and "I don't know." The book, which has indices and cross-references also includes a glossary with over 300 terms. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! Need more like this for all Public Safety Pros!
I have been buying this book for myself since it's first publishing, then end up giving it to someone who needs this more than I do (I speak Spanish). This is a well planned and layed out book for all medical professionals who come in contact with Spanish speaking people whether all day long or infrequently. Rarely is there a translation tool that gets to the point quickly without leaving the medical professional in the dark. In 1999, I went with a relief team to Nicaragua in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch. We managed to treat more than 140 patients in three days with the help of this little book! It is easy to understand and to use. You can use the pronunciation or just point to the sentence and you get a straight forward answer. It's that simple! I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a medical question that needs to be answered quickly regardless of the profession. We need more books like these for all professions in the public and private sector. Buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
This is a great book for any medical professional who feels the frustration of trying to help a Spanish-only speaking patient and fells "tied", and helpless. You don't need to study this book to learn Spanish but rather start using it for history and physical and by time the language will be automatically embedded in your head. I love this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For talking to Spanish speaking patients
A blurb on the front of William Harvey's _Spanish for Health Care Professionals_ notes that this book is designed for communicating with people whose only language is Spanish. This book is also designed for people who have little or no skills in Spanish to learn something of that language.

The first chapter, which is entitled "Basic Information," introduces the reader to the Spanish alphabet, so that the reader may learn how to pronounce Spanish words, and to some basic expressions such as "Good morning" and "How are you?"

In subsequent chapters the reader learns the names for the parts of the body, some terms/phrases for admission into a hospital, some terms/phrases for an accident scene, and some terms/phrases for a pregnancy. These chapters are followed by three more which teach terms/phrases according to three hypothetical patients of varied ages. At the end of the book is what the writer called a word/expression finder,an English/Spanish and a Spanish/English dictionary.

However the reader should be aware that the terminology discussed is limited in its depth. A quick comparison of this book with _First Responder_ by David Schottke and others shows that terms such as "abdomen" and "anaphylactic shock" are not covered by William Harvey's book. Even so, as the front cover blurb said, this book should be very useful to people who have little or no skills in Spanish when speaking to Spanish speaking patients.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just okay
Reviewed by one of the professional Spanish-language interpreters at a major medical facility. Not organized very well; too confusing. There are better products, so this one is not recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the student in you
I am a medical resident and recently bought William Harvey's "Spanish for Health Care Professionals". A wonderful way to learn phrases and basic Spanish skills to communicate with a Spanish-speaking patient. I would recommend this tutorial for anyone willing to put in the time to begin learning another language. It will help you be a better health care provider for a sometimes-underserved patient population.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Self-Learning Resource for Health Care Providers
This book is not intended to be a quick reference guide - it's meant to be an instructional tool, and is a very good one. If you're a motivated learner and you have some time to devote to studying Spanish, this is a great way to start. I started off a few years ago using William Harvey's First Edition of this book, which was really helpful, but this updated version is even better. It addresses several different types of diagnoses, treatments, and procedures, and uses gender/age-specific scenarios to teach vocabulary and new tearms. Beside each new Spanish word, you get the phonetic pronunciation in English, which is very helpful to keep you from botching the pronunciation of Spanish words. The author goes the extra mile in giving you little "Notas" about Hispanic culture and how it impacts health care. This book has been incredibly helpful to me as a health care provider. I highly recommend it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for quick reference.
This book is very good for assessment and admission questions. It goes system by system and gives you translations.

It is not for quick reference when speaking to a patient. I find it frustrating to look through the book when I want to ask a simple question, or need to give a bit of information. I have found myself using translation software on the WWW when communicating with Spanish speaking patients and their families as opposed to using this book. ... Read more

Book Description

The 4th edition represents a major revision of The Medical Word Book. Most of the reviews on this site are for the 3rd edition.

The 4th edition (1500 pages) is still organized by specialty, with words appearing in more than one section if they apply to more than one specialty. The General Surgical Terms section contains primarily surgical hardware. Other surgical terms, like titles of operations, appear in the appropriate specialty section. The Drugs and Chemistry section has been removed, but the Dentistry section has been restored and updated, and a new section, Oncology and Hematology has been added. Neurology and Psychiatry have been separated, and other specialty sections have been expanded and the titles changed. See the table of contents which has changed substantially.

Designed by transcriptionists for transcriptionists, Sloane's Medical Word Book is a must-have tool for anyone creating medical documents.

Coverage of anatomy and general medical terminology as well as 18 medical specialties.

Both phonetic and correct spellings of words are listed alphabetically for rapid access.

16 pages of full-color anatomy plates.

Brand-new sections on Dentistry and Oncology and Hematology.

Previous entries reviewed and thousands added to reflect current medical practice.

Context clues have been added, cross-references are clearer, and numerous terms have been recategorized. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My MT Bible
I have been a medical transcriptionist since 1973. That is when I first started using my first MEDICAL WORD BOOK, by Sloan. I just received the newest edition of this book. Having words categorized by different body systems makes it much easier and quicker to use. Also, I have found words in there that I could not find in other references, because I knew what system of the body it would be in. I have many other references at my fingertips and if I had to choose only one to be on my desktop, this would definitely be it!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not one of my favorite references...
I have been doing medical transcription out of my home for the past four years and have amassed quite a collection of books in that time. This book normally comes highly recommended by other MTs (just see the other reviews), but honestly I was not impressed with it. I would say at least 3 out of 4 times I go to look up a word in The Medical Word Book I cannot find it. As such, I have found myself referring to it much less often; sometimes I give it another chance but more often than not I am left frustrated and have to look elsewhere for my term.

2-0 out of 5 stars Inadequate
I have been a transcriptionist for three-plus years, and I have owned this book for all that time. I honestly cannot recall a single time this book has been helpful. It is a small volume, for a medical word book, being about the size of a thick popular paperback novel, which is wholly inadequate for the monstrously huge field of medical words.

It is separated by specialty, and to give an example of how inadequate this book is, let's just compare the number of pages dedicated to a couple of specialties: For instance, this book gives about 70 pages to ophthalmology, while Stedman's ophthalmology book is 560 pages. The OB/GYN section is about 60 pages, while Stedman's OB/GYN book is over 600 pages.

It's for good reason the sections are so small in this book. For instance, under "orbital" in the ophth section we find 10 entries (orbital apex, orbital cellulitis, etc.). Looking under "orbital" in the Stedman's ophth book we find about 120 entries (orbital abscess, orbital adipose tissue, orbital akinesia, etc.). The MT who hears a hurried eye doc state "orbital akinesia" will find zero help from Sloane. That, obviously, is just one of many such examples I could give.

And, I'll point out, my page totals above for the Stedman's books do not include their multiple appendices, which are also very helpful; this book has no such feature by specialty. I learned quickly that I'd always do better to check my Stedman's specialty word book first, and consequently haven't had reason to use this because it is missing *so much* information.

You get what you pay for. If you need to work independently as an MT, this cheapo approach won't help you much. If you can find any way to lay out a few hundred dollars for a set of Stedman's word books or CDs, you'll be way ahead of the game. I may throw this book into our next garage sale, as it just takes up office space for no good reason.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous for newbies to med trans!
When I first started transcribing in 1980, the first edition of this book was my bible. When I was lost in a black hole of unintelligible doctor-mumble, being able to narrow the terms down to groups of specialties saved the day for me. Now, after 23 years as an acute care MT, I teach full time at a community college and I require this book for my transcription students. Ellen Drake's meticulous edits and additions have at least quadrupled the page count and made it a trustworthy reference. I must admit, though, that as an experienced MT, it would not be the first book I pulled off my shelf when stuck on a word now. Now I usually first turn to the latest edition of Stedman's, the Drakes' latest pharmaceutical reference, or to a word book with extensive terms in a particular specialty. That's because the Medical Word Book is more like a text version of an experienced MT's brain. So I probably wouldn't recommend this for an "old" MT like me -- but newbies will LOVE it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for transcription
This book helped me with vocabulary and pronounciation and it was easy to understand. However, for a more thorough look into anatomy and physiology, I recommend:
Anatomy and Physiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations

(Volume 2) (ISBN: 097199927)

3-0 out of 5 stars Difficult at first, but then got it.
I too found this book to be hard to understand at first. I thought I'd never get done with it. I decided not to let a book get the best of me so I really applied myself and soon I had the hang of it. The only thing I would have added to the book is more tests at the end.
