Book Description

Do you head for the refrigerator after a grueling day at work, or pay your bills with a bowl of potato chips by your side? If your answer is yes, you eat your way through stress: you are an "emotional overeater." And if every diet you have ever tried has ended in failure because you lose control of your eating when your emotions fray, here is good news. Contrary to every eating plan you've ever tried or read about, the cure for emotional overeating is not expensive therapy or superhuman will power. It's food.
The secret is the neurotransmitter serotonin, a naturally occurring chemical in the brain that makes us feel good. Stress interferes with our serotonin supply and leaves us without enough of this brain chemical to regulate our moods. But we can boost serotonin simply by eating the right kinds of foods. The reason you feel an uncontrollable urge to eat is because your brain is crying out for relief; it is desperately seeking serotonin! And when you eat the right foods, serotonin runs on full and stress vanishes.
The Serotonin Solution is the first book to confront and control emotion-driven overeating. Based on ten years of revolutionary research and testing at M.I.T., Judith J. Wurtman's Serotonin Power meal and snack plan tells you how to allocate protein, carbohydrate, and fat dosages to literally increase the power of your brain to control your eating. The result? Restored energy, an end to emotional overeating, and permanent weight loss. You will learn to:
* identify your overeating triggers
* follow a daily meal and snack plan that makes you feel so good you'll want
to do it
* avoid foods that exacerbate stress or block the stress-breaker foods from
working
* combine exercise with stress-breaker foods to feel good
and lose weight faster
Along with the basic Serotonin Power Diet Plan for daily stress, Wurtman offers food plans tailored for other types of emotional overeating: a premenstrual mood change plan; a winter/summer food plan; a plan for people who have just quit smoking, finished a diet, or are at home with their preschool kids; and a plan for those who work shifts and are awake when their bodies want to be asleep. Finally, there is a plan to be used in conjunction with the serotonin-based medication developed by Judith Wurtman that is now pending FDA approval.
The Serotonin Solution is the only diet book based on Wurtman's original discovery of the scientific relationship between overeating and serotonin. It can help you banish emotional overeating forever and take control of your appetite for good.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Don't Binge Anymore!
This book has completely turned my life around. I thought my bingeing on carbs was simply a matter of willpower. After reading this book, I now understand the biological reason for it. My body was screaming for Seritonin. This book explains how to enable your body to create more seritonin without bingeing. With more seritonin, i no longer have the desire to binge. The author Judith Wurtman does an excellent job of explaining why we get uncontrollable cravings and how to qual them. She also does a great job in explaining why the 'Low Carb Diets' only make you crave carbs more. Thank God for this book. It's helped me understand how your body works and why it craves certain things at different times. Buy it, you won't regret it.

2-0 out of 5 stars What is true?
I have read many serotonin-related books and I am quite confused. In his book "Beyond Prozac" Michael J. Norden, an eminent Psychiatrist, states that the much-publicized high-carbohydrate diet may actually make you depressed and overweight. In "Potatoes not Prozac" a high-carb plus protein diet is advocated. Dr. Joel Robertson in his "Natural Prozac" states that protein is a dopamine booster. Who should one believe? What is true and what is not? Should one accept Dr. Wurtman's approach as correct? O.K. she is an M.I.T. professor but the other authors have impressive academic credentials as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally...a system that works!
I have been using this book's recommendations religiously since August, and I've lost thirteen pounds. This is the only diet I've ever been on that has enabled me to exercise at the same time, and not become terribly depressed. The only other way I could lose weight was with diet pills, and then I couldn't exercise because I didn't have the energy. It fits my eating patterns perfectly, and I have not had any near-fainting episodes from low blood sugar in months. I also have suffered from mild obsessive-compulsiveness in the past; I believe that this diet helps control that, too. I take vitamins, fatty acids, and kava kava in addition to this diet, and I am telling everyone I know about it. Thanks so much for all your research. I would like to see a sequel with a maintenance diet plan. ... Read more

For most health books, the word cure in the title is a definite sign to steer clear. The Diet Cure is a refreshing exception. Author Julia Ross has the unusual job description of "nutritional psychologist," which means that she works with people to eradicate food cravings, addictions, and eating disorders (including overeating). The gist of The Diet Cure plan is that food allergies, hormonal irregularities, blood sugar swings, and thyroid dysfunction, among other factors, cause biochemical imbalances that lead to food addiction and weight gain, and that these problems can usually be lessened or eradicated with the proper diet and supplements.

To be sure, most of these health problems ought to be diagnosed by a medical professional, but they often get overlooked because their symptoms can be numerous and vague (fatigue, depression, inability to concentrate). They're not easily diagnosed by the common managed-care tests (such as the TSH, or thyroid-stimulating hormone, blood test; Ross advises several more specific tests if a thyroid problem is suspected). Ross's questionnaires, worksheets, and profiles of case studies from her 10 years of clinical experience will enable you to determine what may be the hidden causes that sabotage your weight-loss efforts.

Ross's book should be lauded for its educational tone. She warns of the dangers of zinc and vitamin B1 deficiencies, two common problems found in chronic dieters, along with protein and fat deficiencies and adrenal exhaustion (which is particularly common in caffeine fiends). She rails against the most popular diet programs, including the Zone, the Atkins Diet, and even Weight Watchers, for (among other things) their ignorance of food allergies such as grains, dairy products, and sugar. For those whom Ross terms, perhaps frighteningly, sugar addicts or "recreational sugar users," she suggests an amino-acid and fish-oil supplement plan to curb sugar cravings and aid weight loss. Many of her patients over the past decade testify in the book that their environmental allergies and weight-loss problems disappeared after they cut sugar from their diets.

Ross's suggestions may seem radical to many primary-care physicians; her approach to health and weight loss definitely takes a holistic approach. She does, however, back up her suggestions and plan with references to medical studies, along with dozens of print and online resources on finding a nutritionist, naturopathic physician, holistic M.D., and testing labs (many of them mail-order). This is one diet that Americans in particular ought to pay attention to. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This program WORKS! My energy is back! No sugar cravings!
This book, and its author, Julia Ross, are teaching me a new way to eat. I've been on the food plan she recommends, and the supplements, for 8 days, and I feel so much better than I ever have before. I used to get really hungry 2 hours after eating, and start to *crash* within an hour after that; my whole life revolved around making sure that I would be able to eat something every 2 or 3 or hours. Most meals would make me fall asleep or get cranky. With the help of the suggestions in this book, I've learned what types of foods I can eat that don't cause any bad reactions. When I walk away from a meal composed the way this book tells me to -- 1-2 cups of vegetables, a little bit of rice, 4 oz of lean protein, a tablespoon of olive oil -- I feel full and satisfied, but not bloated or sleepy. I thought bloated and sleepy is just the way you're supposed to feel after eating! I can eat a meal and not feel hungry for 4 or 5 hours afterwards. If I do get hungry, I have a snack of raw nuts and seeds, or fruit. I don't have sugar cravings, my digestion is normalized, and I need less sleep than I used to. I'm getting reacquainted with my kitchen, and learning to create wonderful things in there, especially luscious vegetable dishes. It's definitely challenging to learn a completely new way to eat, but the rewards are worth it. This book supports your efforts with a really clearly spelled out eating plan and supplement program. If you're having trouble with your energy, digestion, mood, or weight, (or all of the above), read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for those interested in diet and health
This is quite possibly the best book on nutrition I have read so far (which is a lot). To frame the issues of over-eating / incorrect eating from the perspective of the chemical and physiological reactions of the body, really demonstrates how looking just a caloric intake is only a small part of the equasion -- and can't lead to long-term success. And it is written clearly and simply. I read it like a mystery novel, getting clues to how my body responds to things, and trying to piece together a picture of my own overall imbalances.

It is likely that people with food issues have multiple layers of imbalances that need to be addressed, and this book explains how to test yourself (or access a lab) to identify imbalances, and how to fix them. The eight steps she addresses are brain chemistry, low-calorie dieting, unstable blook sugar, low thyroid function, addictions to foods you're allergic to, hormonal havoc, yeast overgrowth, and fatty acid deficiency.

All in all, an excellent primer on the REAL nutritional factors that effect your weight, mood, and cravings.

2-0 out of 5 stars Maybe there's some good info in here somewhere
I was intrigued with the possibility that this book might have some interesting new slant on nutrition, and perhaps some valuable advice about how to counteract symptoms with supplements.

Instead I was constantly distracted to notice that Ross relies on information of psuedo-science nutritionists. She references the blood type diet, and some of her information seems to come from Weston-Price. Her erroneous information on soy seems to come from the latter source. Her understanding of vegetarian diets is faulty, as she either is unaware, or prefers to ignore, the bulk of scientific evidence points to the superiority of vegetarian diets over those heavy with meat. Her understanding of carbohydrates seems to come from Atkins. As another reviewer mentioned, she mainly references other pop diet books rather than scientific studies.

So, given that she relies on unscientific sources for some of her information, how credible can I find the rest to be?

Maybe there's something of merit in here. I surely hope so, but my confidence in the author is shaken. I'm interested in advice based on sound nutritional science, not gimmicks and quick-buck trends.

I wonder if there is another book out there which addresses the same questions, but is more scientifically oriented?

1-0 out of 5 stars Almost Atkins
This book is basically a rework of the Atkins diet with a few added features I find dangerous. The author suggests taking all kinds of supplements and though available at a local health food store, we need to be careful with how many supplements we take. The author suggests that we consult our Doctor, many people will not and just self-medicate themselves. I believe the author's intention is to benefit others with this information, I just wish she put out a stricker warning or more information on supplements.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book can change your life - not just another diet book!
I've read more than my fair share of diet books. They don't work!

The reason you eat too many carbs is because you are addicted to them. Why? The carbs change your brain chemistry and your brain no longer makes the same level of neurotransmitters. When you stop the carbs, your brain is still not making the neurotransmitters, so it craves foods to replace what it is missing.

The answer is amino acids. You can take simple amino acids, 5-htp, glutamine, etc. and cure your problem.

In about 3 months, your brain chemistry will be normal and you will no longer have the cravings. It is not about willpower. You are ADDICTED. There is no point in being hard on yourself.

This author found that amino acids could help 90% of drug addicts overcome their addictions. They can help you overcome your addiction to sugar and carbs.

Finally a natural method to stop addictions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!
This is a great book full of wisdom and insight from someone who has "been through it all". I was gripped by Seattle's life growing up with tough times in North Dakota and becoming a successful bisnesswoman in today's world. There is tons of advise for just about anyone going through any situation. Very insperational!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Solution? - plain common sense!
Seatle Sutton's book is a simple primer in the way things ought to be done. Her particular calling is "healthy food" but the principles she expounds would work in just about every business, every walk of life and everybody's existence. She is one of the last of those depression years survivors who learned the lessons of conservatism from her upbringing. However cliched those lessons are, there is a ringing honesty in the philosophies she puts forward. And applied to her brainchild, the "Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating" program, and the corporation that supports it nationwide, there is no finer, nor more appropriate message in today's morass of diet diatribe.
The book, in addition to having some stunning photographs - one is of her husband, Kelly with a foot-long open gash in his stomach - is writen in a primitive conversational style. She often dispenses with verbs in sentences but the overall effect is as if she were standing right there talking to you.
This may be a book on the birth and evolution of a "diet plan" interwoven with a unique woman's life, but the "diet" part is so basic and natural it seems wierd to have to write a book to explain it. It's probably a sad comment on the state of the civilized world that we have to study a book to learn how to be and act "normal." This doesn't mean this work is superfluous, by any means - exactly the opposite. The more people sign on to Seattle's diet and philosophies, the better this world will be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Body Type is the Key
Ignore the uninspired title and buy this book because it works. I have used it for years and given away so very many copies that Dr. A should give me a commission. He has authored other books, but this is the one to buy for your lifetime nutrition.

The single most identifier of body type in this book is "where a person gains weight." Where you gain weight indicates which gland in your body has taken over the controls and is the reason you are looking at extra weight on your frame---be it ten pounds or one hundred.

In all honesty, the mirror does not lie and Dr. A has done a considerable amount of research to validate his findings. Dr. A is a real doctor and the diet is healthy--no starvation or lack of essential vitamins.

You will find that once you do the body type diet, the lifetime nutrition guidelines for your body type are something you actually crave because you'll feel better when you follow them (not to mention maintain your weight).

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! The answer on "How to Feed My Body"!
Here's the manual on how to feed your body and make it run efficiently and with a happier outlook. I finally understand how to truly eliminate fatigue and cravings! The weight loss is just an added bonus. The explanations describing each body-type make it easy to understand not only your own body, but the cravings and weight problems loved ones.

I have recommended this book to many friends and relatives who are ALL finding success.

Here's an additional little tip - when making changes to your diet, try only one meal at a time for about a week. Example: Begin by changing your breakfast habits. Get successful at it for at least 5-7 days. Then try changing your lunch habits for 5-7 days. Then dinner. It's much less stressful to change things a little at a time. It also gives you time to develop eating strategies and menus.

Try it! You'll feel great....REALLY!

3-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for some, disappointing for me
I bought this book due to raving reviews from several of my friends. I was very excited and optimistic. I determined my body type and was impressed that MOST of the bad foods for my type were foods that I already knew didn't agree with me. I followed the instructions and the meal plan, but met with absolutely minimal success. I couldn't figure it out at first, but then it dawned on me that years ago as a child I tested very intolerant to all dairy, and the diet called for at least two glasses of milk a day, and some recipes contained cheese. And since the book's instructions were to absolutely not omit any food from the meal plan, I decided to can it.
I know for a fact that this diet has produced amazing results for some people. But if you have food allergies or sensitivities, make sure the meal plan doesn't include any of them, or you'll be disappointed (and not any thinner or healthier) as I am.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Book if you give it a chance. Patience!
A couple of years ago, I was a poster child for T-Types. Skin and bones everywhere except for my love handles, belly, and cheeks. I am the classic T-Type. I had been eating all of the things you are supposed to eat when you are healthy (pastas, rice, etc.). Wrong!. If everyone followed the food pyramid the United States would sink into the ocean! I'm 5 foot 8 and when I was 26 I got up to 185 at one point. I was also drinking some pretty hearty beers. As Dr. Abravanel would put it, I was a skinny person who just happened to get fat! I exercised, ran, rode my bike, went to the gym. I could hardly shake any weight. I would reward myself for exercising with some pasta and french bread. I also love sweets. Fat-free candy must be good for you cause it has no fat in it right? My mom gave me her old-school copy of this book and soon she bought me the revised edition. I'm not a big fan of commitment and it was really hard to start this diet. It was easy for a while. I lost 10 pounds the first week. I lost a total of about 15 pounds after a few weeks. I continued to lose weight but eased off the diet. It took a really long time and the weight came back. I decided to go back on it and after about 3 weeks lost between 20-25 pounds. I now weigh 150 pounds. This is what I weighed when I was 16 years old. I have no gut anymore. It's all gone. I also hike and ride bicycles when I can. If you want to sit on the couch and be a tater the weight will come off more slowly. If you exercise for an hour a day and 4 or 5 days a week, you will drop weight like a bad habit. I can guarantee it. If you are a T and eat a lot of protein, I suggest you drink as much water as possible to clean the toxins from the meats out of your body. I hope this works for you like it has for me. I also cheat a lot and don't gain the weight back (beer, coffee, etc.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You Dr. Abravanel!
I bought this book because it sounded pretty unique to me, the good rating, and what really got my attention was how much weight some of the reviewers said they lost in such a short amount of time while feeling great. I've lost about 20 lbs in 3 weeks, continuing to lose 1/2 to 1 1/2 lbs. daily, and I do feel a lot better. ... Read more

Book Description

The Cardiovascular Cure offers a groundbreaking approach to preventing heart attack and stroke by enhancing your body’s own natural defenses. Dr. John Cooke, head of Stanford Medical School’s vascular unit, has devised a powerful new method for fighting cardiovascular disease without bypass surgery or angioplasty. Drawing on his own investigations, as well as Nobel Prize-winning research from a team of American scientists, Dr. Cooke provides heart patients with a diet, supplement, and exercise program that will help them feel better in as little as two weeks. His program also works to prevent heart disease in those at risk.

In 1998, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded for the discovery of EDRF (endothelium-derived relaxing factor), a chemical produced in the lining of the blood vessels, which keeps them free of plaque. Dr. Cooke and other investigators have found that specific nutrients can enhance EDRF production and improve blood flow in people with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, or other risk factors for heart disease.

This potentially life-saving book shows how anyone can achieve healthier blood vessels (the key to preventing heart disease). A two-week menu plan contains recipes that emphasize EDRF-enhancing foods, and there is detailed information on supplemental nutrients and vitamins that are useful in strengthening the cardiovascular system. Recipes from breakfast (Banana Date-Nut Bread; Blueberry Oat Pancakes; Pineapple Ginger or Tropical Smoothies; Pumpkin Muffins) to dinner (Moroccan Red Snapper; Chicken Wrap with Refried Beans; Soy-Glazed Salmon; Turkey Meatloaf) feature healthy fats found in fish, nuts, and olive oil. There is also welcome news that red wine and chocolate can be good for you (there are recipes for Double Chocolate Cake and Chocolate Raspberry Surprise).

The exercise program consists of the same therapeutic plans Dr. Cooke has prescribed for even his most severely ill patients, many of whom begin to walk and even exercise more vigorously without pain after two weeks. In addition, there are aerobic workouts designed for more active patients. Dr. Cooke also provides state-of-the-art information (pro and con) on conventional drugs–from aspirin to beta blockers–and medical tests and procedures to further combat cardiovascular disease.

With an introduction by Sir John Vane, a Nobel Prize-winning cardiovascular scientist, this book will provide anyone concerned about his or her cardiovascular health with new hope for a pain-free, disease-free life.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cardiovascular Cure by John Cooke et al.
This is an excellent book on the workings of the heart.
It explains how a healthy endotheliam releases its own nitro.
Small amounts of L-arginine potentiate nitric oxide. This process
increases blood flow and reverses heart disease. The nitric
oxide relaxes blood vessels and facilitates blood flow.
The endothelium is known to potentiate the increase in blood
flow. This book will help to formulate an optimal strategy
to deal with impediments to blood flow and nutritional issues
which are at the periphery of heart health issues. It would be
an excellent addition to the medicinal personal health library.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Important Book in your Life
My sister bought me this book, right after I had some heart palpitations and was admitted to a hospital. I read the book THREE times! Dr. Cooke verifies what I already know and believe and gave me many more additional insights as well.

But does it work? I applied Dr. Cooke's principles and after only six weeks I saw major results, confirmed by my cardiologist, as well as with blood tests.

Needless to say I bought 15 copies of the book and gave one to each of my family as presents. I will also buy more for my best friends.

This book truly saved my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars honest doctor
It is not often that a Doctor writes so honestly. I love the recommendation to utilize diet and medication before resorting to invasive treatment.
Dr. Cooke has researched a timely and relevant field. He has the good sense to enlist assistance in articulating his research to the public in such an honest and straightforward manner.
He is a credit to his field of "The Youngest Science" as Dr. Lewis Thomas called it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars It is very hard to find your type.
While I found this book very interesting, I thought it was really confusing at the same time. I had a really hard time figuring out my type. The author suggests using "muscle testing" to find your type, but she does not tell you what kinds of tests to use. I tried to have my practitioner test me, but she had no idea what tests to use either. I think it is a really great concept, but it should be easier to "type" yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book to determine individual dietary guidelines.
After having read and successfully participated in the body type diets prescribed by Dr. Abravanel, I am a believer that not everyone benefits from the same type of foods, or the same type of diets.

Dr. Abravanel only determined four body types for women, Dr. Carolyn Mein, the author of this book, goes into much more detail by breaking down body types into 25 different categories! Think of the years of research that went into this book, and the potential to once and for all determine the best type of nutritional support your own body needs.

I discovered through this book, that I am a Pineal. My review is 4 stars out of 5 because I found it slightly challenging in determining my type. Initially I thought I was a Lymph, then a Thalamus. Only after I ordered her Body Type Questionnaire off of her website, was I able to determine my absolute type. Others might not have the same level of difficulty. My only criticism is that her questionnaire should have more psychological profile questions in it, and it should be included in the first few chapters of her book. Perhaps for the next edition!

I still highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative!
I found the book read like a textbook. It was very informative, but once you find out what you are, thats it. I recommend a few people go in together and buy it. We have had a lot of fun at work finding our different types. I had myself convinced I was a Heart, but later after reading all the bios, found that I am definately a Pancreas....not very glamorous.. The profiles are very informative and interesting.. I do wish, in regard to the foods list that it went more in depth with the portions of foods etc. but I guess that is pretty well know anyway. I was pleased with my purchase.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed!
I got really frustrated that there was a lot of repeated information at the beginning of the book. She kept saying the same things but in different ways. Until she finally got to the specific body type information (which, I'll admit, was interesting), I really wondered if she'd ever get to the point. I began to think I'd been "taken" by forking out $30 for this book.

Also, I do have a hard time believing that someone's dominant organ could be their eyeballs! The body-type info made sense but attributing it to different organs seemed a little weird.

When she said I'd know exactly what to eat, I expected specific information about portion sizes and frequency of eating certain foods. I just didn't find that in this book. Maybe it's there but I didn't find it. Having to sort through so much repetition got old. And then there was also the fact that she skipped around telling details about this type and then that type and just scattering info all over the place. It was annoying. And the guidelines she did set about the frequency of eating certain foods just didn't make sense to me. They were too vague. I don't know, maybe that was the point of the diet, that you don't have to measure or think about it too much.

I did, however, find my "type". I thought at first that maybe it was like horoscopes and that any type I read would fit me, but that wasn't the case. I read through the other types and my type was obvious. So I am going to try the guidelines she set and see what happens. She's certainly not suggesting anything crazy like eating grapfruit for a week.

I personally don't think the book was worth $30 but I did find it at least interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive book on finding the ideal diet
In an age of "the diet of the week" book, Ms. Mein's work comes as a welcome to those who haven't found the right diet and lifestyle that helps them achieve optimal health. DOn't be fooled: one diet is NOT for everyone. How rediculous and nieve. Carolyn Mein first recognizes that we are all biologically different having different metabolisms, dominant body systems and needs. She has nicely expanded on earlier "body typing" work to come up with a comprehensive system of diet, lifestyle and emotional recommendations to achieve optimal health.

One feature that separates her work from others in this field is recognizing that our diets often need to change when we are ill or under much stress (especially critical for immune-deficient patients). Most others totally miss this critical aspect of diet.

Yet another important fact she fully acknoledges is that many type NEED meat in their diet. Contrary to some people's dogma, all people cannot and should not become vegetarians - even if they want to out of ethical, spiritual or social reasons. THis is terrible for certain types, while for others it is totally the healthy choice.

Don't waste your time with too many other diet books and just buy this one. You will have fun too trying to figure out your type. Try it with friends too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome
This book gives tons of information about different diets, all the vitamin, nutrients, water, air, etc.... I learned so much! I read the whole thing in a little over a week, I spent at least 2-3 hours a day reading it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Valuable Book
I keep picking this book up and referring to it for information I need about health, diet, supplements, etc. It's big alright, but eventually I've been to all the sections. It's a sensible, reasonable book with no hype.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be everyone's nutrition bible.
Dr Haas has written an exhausting, thorough and informative "bible" about everything from what carbs, proteins and fats are and how they work to every vitamin, mineral and supplement you can imagine to special diets for different stages of your life or special needs to recipes...it just covers everything. I especially have to rave about a Western doctor who recognizes the validity of things like food combining and Candidiasis.

This book is over 1,100 pages and it's just jam packed with more information than you will think you need, but then you'll be surprised to find how many sections you'll flip to for info that pertains to you and your family.

I have a huge library of nutrition books and references that are really useful and well-written, but I'd toss them all just to have this one. If you are hesitant about the price or the size of the book, don't be. You will find it to be incredibly useful, easy to understand and beneficial when applied to your own daily life. I know I did.

This is far and away THE best nutrition book out there, I can't see how anyone could top this, unless he releases it with more information one day (and I can't see how there could be more.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Helpful!
Dr. Haas has put together one of the most complete nutrition books that can be enjoyed by the average reader. From what I have read, he makes no outrageous claims, though he does believe nutrition can offer health benefits (which would distinguish this book from a standard nutrition textbook). While the price may seem a little steep, there are 1140 pages that contain a wealth of information. The first 353 pages list virtually every popular nutrient (vitamins, minerals, fats, etc) and food category (such as beans, citrus fruits, etc). He even gives relevant information on the pseudo-vitamins such as Pangamic Acid (B15), amygdalin (B17), and Vitamin U. He also lists many of the popular diets and their benefits and drawbacks.

He also includes a very helpful section on "the Environmental Aspects of Nutrition." Possible pollutants and common food additives are discussed. He lists "88 Survival Suggestions."

Over 100 pages are dedicated to a Seasonal Cookbook. The foods are healthy, but possibly difficult for the average reader to obtain. It is possible with a little work however. There is a section on "Nutritional Application," which has special diets and suggestions for people with cancer, heart disease, yeast syndrome, and other disorders. He also includes suggestions for executives, adults, children, alcoholics, and adolescents. Overall the Nutritional Application section is very complete.

Finally he includes around 80 pages of health questionnaires that test health knowledge and actually intend to estimate one's health level. I use this whenever I have general or specific health questions. I recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best, most comprehensive nutrition summary I've come across.
Not only does this summary provide a comprehensive review of traditional nutrition, it also provides information on less traditional supplements and discussion of current nutritional issues. I highly recommend this book for both lay people and professional nutritionists. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good reading for laypeople, disappointing for scientists
There are two kinds of books that deal with bio-medical issues: those that have reputable scientific references located within the book, and those that don't. This book does not. If this book had the hundreds of journal articles needed to back up Dr. Hoffer's claims, I would have given it a 4 or 5 star rating. The bottom line is that if a scientific book does not have any references, they may as well be telling you that the world is flat. Time and time again Dr. Hoffer says that he has evidence about the effectiveness of this vitamin or that. Put in the references, Dr. Hoffer!

Part of the book is good---it recommends a balanced diet with no processed foods. This mantra reminds of the conversation I once had with a German exchange student in my laboratory. I was walking by him and his German ladyfriend, who was smoking, and I joked "Hey, how come you Germans smoke and drink, but still live as long as us Americans do?" Well, the German student thought long and hard about my "joke", and came up with an answer. He said that in Europe, there are hardly any fast-food restaurants and no supermarkets. All food is much more fresh and has a much shorter shelf life, and since its located in small stores, the inventory is quickly rotated. So his conclusion is that the processed foods shortened the American life span to that of Germans, who smoke and drink much more than we do. In other words, if someone does not smoke, drink, or eat processed foods, they should live to at least 90 years old, not 75.

Some other parts of the book are not very good. Dr. Hoffer claims that all vitamins are safe---they are not!!! He recommends megadosing with vitamins B3, B6, and vitamin C. Of these three vitamins, only C is safe to megadose with. B3 megadosing can cause liver damage and panic attacks, and if someone is also on psychiatric medication, they could die from the serotonin syndrome, the same syndrome that kills some users of the illegal drug Extasy. B6 may also cause the serotonin syndrome if mixed with psychiatric medication, and even by itself, megadosing with B6 can produce permanent peripheral nerve damage. For a more detailed analysis of vitamin side effects, the book The Failures of American Medicine is an excellent reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive review of vitamins and minerals
It is frustrating that the medical profession, in its ignorance, arrogance, and smugness, looks down on "megavitamin" therapy. Vitamins were placed here by the creator(s), to keep us healthy. The drugs "pushed" by MDs were created by Frankenstein in a lab, and frankly, Frankenstein barely understood one tenth of what he was doing, which explains all those side effects.

To give you a taste of this useful book, Vitamin B3 (niacin or niacinamide) is far more important and necessary than we thought it was. The author goes into detail explaining the things that B3 can do for us.

The section on pyroluriacs is new to me, and fascinating. If you don't know what a pyroluriac is, you may want to find out here. It is a condition verifiable by scientific testing, and the symptoms are correctable using various nutrients.

This book gives a very good explanation of so many vitamins and minerals. Read it, and you will be sure to get some ideas for yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on the subject.
This is an excellent book that demonstrates that prostate cancer is mainly a nutritional disease. We in the West have a far higher prostate cancer rate than our Asian counterparts. And, it is due to diet, not ethnicity, or genes. When Asians emigrate to our shores and adopt our Western diet (rich in animal saturated fat), their prostate cancer rates immediately rises up to our levels.

The author extensively details how to restructure our Western diet so as to prevent and cure prostate cancer. This entails reducing our intake of saturated fats, mainly red meat, but also reduce dairy products. It also entails eating more soy in every shape or form (milk, tofu, soy powder). The author also recommends specific supplements. Some are well known like the antioxidant vitamins (C, E). But, others are not so well known such as Selenium, Soy proteins, among many others.

The author provides a lot of information about the PSA test. He is the first to recognize that this test is not very accurate. But, he also recommends several back up tests and benchmarks which can really enhance both the accuracy and the information value of the PSA test. Some of these back up tests include: PSA density, Free PSA test, and ultrasound. If you take the PSA test, and you come up with a high value (>4), you ought to follow through with these other non invasive tests who may very well prevent the need for much more uncomfortable and invasive tests.

The author provides extensive advice on all the different options to cure prostate cancer. On this ground, this book is excellent for several reasons. First, every statement the author makes is referenced and well supported by scientific studies. So, it is not just the author's opinion you are reading about. You are getting information on current scientific knowledge. Second, the author has gotten detailed testimonials by doctors and other individuals (including Mike Milken former king of the Junk Bond set) on how they deal with their own prostate cancer. How they have modified their lifestyle, and nutrition, and what cure path are they taking. This is most fascinating because there are no clearly right or wrong answers at this stage. There are definitely multiple options on how to treat this disease, each with their own trade offs.

Ultimately, prostate cancer treatment is very much an individual decision. This book can provide you much valuable information to remove most of the anxiety associated with taking some hard decisions. In my case, it has removed a good deal of anxiety on how I can prevent this condition. Like in anything, prevention is the best defense. And, this book can help you do that.

If you are concerned about your prostate and overall health, I also strongly recommend the book "The Harvard Medical School Guide To Men's Health." It covers any ailment related to the prostate as well as many other conditions that affect the male gender. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Disease, aging, and death are reversible chemical processes
Reading between the lines of this simple yet profound book tells us that aging is based on the progressive accumulation of nonfunctional matter within the confines of the body which ultimately obstructs organ function until a key organ fails and death ensures. The origin of the nonfunctional matter within the body is from diet. If the foods we eat are not completely digested down to simple sugars and amino acids, and these incompletely digested fragments are absorbed, they only serve to obstruct the body's internal mechanisms. Aging is based on the progressive accumulation of nonfunctional matter originating in diet. If we can eliminate more nonfunctional matter from the body on a day to day basis than is formed, we have in fact reversed the aging process. Nonfunctional matter is eliminated from the body through two surfaces: the skin by sweating and the entire lining of the alimentary canal from the mouth to the anus, in particular fhrough the surface of the colon from the goblet cells. The substance of Ehret's book is the same as that found in the HATHA YOGA PRADIPIKA which is a sanskrit text explaining the scientific basis of physical immortality. The key to making spiritual progress is the complete purification of the physical body. For the brain to function on a higher level the substance in the body that limits the electrical capacity of the brain must first be removed. The rest is then automatic.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Truth Seekers: On the body, food, obstruction, vitality
Reading this book I feel like a archeologist having just discovered in some anchient tomb, a manuscript containing the greatest secrets to life! Prof. Ehret uncovers in simple language the most fundamental aspects about the nature of the body, accumulation of obstructions, mucous and toxins and the resulting disease, by what ever name they may be called. Also how to go about cleansing the body while transitioning to a pure, natural diet that is meant for our bodies. The book appeals to our common sense and rings clear as an obvious but completely overlooked truth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Arnold
In first reading I hade problems to digest and accept author ideas. I think that the most denying part was in my mind. Because of lack of other joys, it made wrong food us something very satisfying and needed. Medicine for different depressions formed in everyday life tasks. After "master cleanser" diet (fast), which was not so positive for me and reading book again I found my understanding to reach deeper levels of food story. This system is also body friendly and teaches to be sensitive with what is going on in you. Author is maybe a little too sure in his expositions, but anyway, this book is a definitive push for me in improving my living and health.

4-0 out of 5 stars New Perspective on health
Ehert utlises a very unconventional approach to wellness that is very simple and basic. This book has served as a useful pivot in my journey to wellness. Though written in the early 1900's many of Eherts's concepts are still expoused today in writings on the acidic/alkaline relationship to disease. Would encourage readers to approach with an open mind. The results I have had from this program have far exceeded any of the conventional kind.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved My Life! Best Book I've EVER Read on Fasting & Diet!!!
I was poisoned by the birth control shot depo provera. Immediately falling sick with symptoms I went back to the doctor. She told me no way was it the shot that was making me sick. She was concerned there was something wrong in my brain and from there I ended up at two different neurologists, a chiropractor, many nurse practitions, an ear nose and throat doctor and on and on. I was eventually diagnosed with fibromyalgia. (...)

No doctor could cure me. They all gave me various drugs, which I took willing.. (foolish me!!) but not one of them cured me. They only further POISONED MY SYSTEM!

I was cured by one thing and one thing only! FASTING AND A MUCUS FREE DIET! I have researched fasting and diet for healing purposes extensively. My stack of books on the subjects stacks waist high. This is by far, hands down, the book I recommend the highest.

If you've read Fast Your Way To Health and/or The Miracle of Fasting, this one is even better!! A+++

The book follows a logical organization, presenting basic concepts in Part 1, applying that content to specific demographic groups in Part 2, exploring the more specific roles of community nutrition and health promotion in Part 3, and finally focusing on nutrition as related to selected disease processes in Part 4. * Engaging design is a hallmark of this popular text, with colorful openers, illustrations, boxes, tables, and textual presentations. * Clinical Applications and For Further Focus boxes highlight hot topics, and analyze a particular concept or trend in depth. * Clinical Applications boxes provide case studies to focus attention on related patient care problems. * Key Concepts and Key Terms condense critical information into easy-to-find boxes. * Each chapter in Part 4 includes diet therapy guidelines that include various recommendations, restrictions, and sample diets for major clinical conditions. * Chapter summaries put content into perspective - the "big picture" of nutrition. * Challenge Questions use true/false, multiple-choice, and matching formats to test students' understanding of chapter content. * Critical Thinking Questions challenge students to analyze, apply, and combine various concepts. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Detailed, clinical information in a readable form
This is a nursing textbook, with detailed, clinical information; however, it is very readable and has many helpful charts and definitions. It covers basic nutrition, nutrition through the life cycle, and community nutrition & health. A long section on clinical nutrition covers diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, renal disease, and surgery. I have used it for personal health and nutrition questions and problems and found it very helpful, e.g., the function of potassium in the body. I found the textbook format helpful rather than bothersome. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable guide to achieving and maintaining good health.
The orthodox medical establishment doesn't yet realize it but America is in the midst of a major shift in the paradigm of health. To its credit orthodox medicine has conquered virtually all of the infections diseases which were the major ailments a century ago, but it has made little progress against the major ailments of our time -- heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other degenerative diseases -- because it refuses to recognize what Linus Pauling saw clearly: these diseases are caused by nutrient deficiencies. They will not be cured by pharmaceutical drugs with harmful side effects but rather with appropriate nutrient supplementation -- especially vitamin C. Linus Pauling was a genius. He was the only person ever to win two unshared Nobel Prizes and, quite probably, was the greatest chemist of the 20th century. In this book he presents his simple common sense prescription for a long healthy life. I wish everyone would read this book and heed Pauling's advice. By the way, recently the American Medical Association reversed its long-standing opposition to nutrient supplements and now recommends them. Get this book and get the details about nutrient supplementation from the expert on this subject, Linus Pauling.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dead Doctors might lie, but Linus Pauling doesn't.
I'm no health nut but I'd like to stay as healthy as possible without spending all my spare time thinking and worrying about it. That's why I really appreciate this book by Linus Pauling. It sets a steady course through the piles of information and misinformation around the health and vitamin subject. And Pauling's bubbly personality can't help but make this book an even more enjoyable experience. I only wish we had more Linus Paulings in the world to speak, as he did, from a level of education, honesty and conviction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recipe for Good Health
I read this book in August 2003.

The same month I ordered vitamins as suggested by Linus Pauling on the internet and started taking them. I started with about 3-4 grams of vitamin C daily. Slowly, initially reluctancty, my wife too joined me. And then we started giving our 5 year old twin kids 1 gram of vitamin C daily.

Since then,

(1) nobody from our family has needed to visit a doctor. (earlier we had multiple visits per month)

(2) i have not had a cold, or a cough or a sore throat.

(3) my wife's allergies and asthma have improved.

(4) my kids do not get colds or sore throats or ear aches.

(5) my mother has also started vitamin c and her allergies of 20 years have disappeared.

Now, I sing praises of vitamin C and Linus Pauling in front of anybody who cares to listen !

5-0 out of 5 stars The complex made simple...
This book was awesome reading not only for the information contained but for the opportunity to read something written by a two-time Nobel laureate. Dr. Pauling writes clearly and eloquently about complex things and makes me want to know more! His wisdom shines through and gives the reader an inkling of his intellect. Read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars More Quantity and Quality of Life--Guaranteed!
I was lucky enough to be home one afternoon 15 years ago watching the Phil Donahue show. Linus Pauling was on the show promoting this book opposite Jack La Lanne (the fitness guru), who was hyping some expensive vitamin regime he was selling. I had never taken a vitamin in my life (28 years old!), but something about the sincerity and wisdom of what Linus was communicating made sense to me. I bought the book and followed the guidelines. I haven't had a serious cold or flu in 15 years. Oh yes, I feel the viruses and germs attack my system, and I will occasionally be congested or run a slight fever when a strong flu strain races through the population, but I just start taking 1000 mg of Vitamin C an hour at the first hint of illness and the symptoms never become more than a minor inconvenience.

I'm not claiming miracles, because believe me I've had my share of physical infirmities (ruptured lumbar disc, bursitis of the shoulder, vertigo) and I'm not a new age nut who completely rejects western medicine. However, the vitamin regimen that Linus outlines in this book will give you a turbo-charged immune system.

Please consult the text and learn about many other benefits of Linus' prescription for optimal health. Two teasers: First he explains why cheaper is better--don't pay a lot of money for natural, organic, bioflavinoids, etc. So even if the vitamin thing doesn't work out for you, at most you've spent 50-75 cents a day (because of inflation it may be a buck now, but I doubt it). Secondly, Vitamin C is a fantastic natural laxative. Talk about feeling good!

This sweet man with two nobel prizes has given the gift of health to humanity and it is yours for next to nothing. Don't be stubborn, be skeptical, but run a thorough trial and error test yourself. I have no doubt what the result will be. ... Read more
