4-0 out of 5 stars He's Right In Many Respects
While I don't buy every word the man said (who does with anybody)I whole heartily agree with practically all the man said. I have believed water to be very good for you from reading bodybuilding magazines over the years but I had no idea how plain water could so positively affect the proper function of so much of the body. The book re-enforced what I already knew and believed but more than that it brought to light many things I didn't know. The book is an easy read with most chapters being 20 pages or less so it can be read in just a few days. Much of the scientific jargon is broken down into layman's terms rather well. I will be keeping my copy for reference and buying a copy for friends and family. One very interesting fact Dr. Batmanghelidi brings up is that he don't sell water. Shows me he is truly (most likely anyhow) concerned with helping people and not just blasting the medical profession, or rather the medical profession's main objective and that is money instead of creating a healthier society and caring for people. If there is a downside to the book it is that he does have a sharp tongue of criticism toward some doctors and organizations. Still, the man can back up what he says. Get the book and read it. You'll be glad you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Waterboy was right!! We need high quality H20
Wow! Just follow the directions, drinking half your body weight in oz. of water daily and your improved health will amaze you!! Say you weigh 150lb., drink a minimum of 75 oz. of water a day. (More if you exercise extensively or if it's abnormally hot out.) It will eliminate excessive eating because you think you're hungry but really you're thirsty. It will get rid of any stomach/ulcer-type pains due to lack of water in your stomach during digestion (Dr. Batman. recommends drinking two glasses prior to meals.) You'll have a renewed wealth of energy. You'll lose weight without trying. You'll be able to think more clearly. The body just can't function properly if it lacks the fluid (WATER!) to move all the important stuff around, for cellular maintenance, growth and disease prevention. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Those who find it dry, miss the important life-saving message that goes beyond the typed text. It's worth the work to read it and ponder it until you understand. For healths sake!

1-0 out of 5 stars He's a quack
The man doesn't believe that AIDS is "caused by a virus." It says so right there in this book. He also hasn't published any real studies about his "water cure." If the effects were as dramatic as he says, the medical world would be all over it, just like they always tell everybody to exercise and eat well.

I have no doubt that chronic dehydration is bad for you, and I'm sure that drinking only water and rarely caffeinated drinks or alcohol is better for you, but this guy is just ridiculous.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Few Most Important Health Books Written
Without condescending to read it, I had pooh-poohed the idea of this book for years. "Who needs to be told to drink water?" I thought. "Everyone already knows that." Then one afternoon, by accident, I saw it on a reshelving cart at a bookstore, and flipped through it. My new reaction was, "Oh, my God!" There I stood, as a Ph.D. scientist, looking at the book I'd made fun of, and I felt like a fool as I read key sections in several chapters.

I bought two copies (one to underline, with marginal notes; the other to lend out), and read through it in one sitting, after which I looked up Dr. Batmanghelidj in Virginia and phoned him for an extended conversation. I found him very congenial, unpretentious and blazingly competent. Since that day several years ago I have recommended this book to hundreds of people, and I've provided free copies to many doctors, dentists and youth counselors.

Cocky, presumptuous health practitioners, even more arrogant than I had earlier been about this subject, find this book easy to dismiss if they haven't read it, and I identify with their foregone-conclusion mentality, having been there myself prior to understanding this book. To the rest of you, whether you believe you're knowledgeable about health issues or not, I can only plead with you to read this book and take it seriously. In my case, I had been repeatedly plagued by headaches and lower-back pain before reading it, but not once since applying its recommendations. The orthopedic section alone is worth the price of the book. If you know anyone with asthma, it would be tragic not to buy a copy of this for them.

In short, though I have read literally hundreds of books on health and nutrition, I consider this book to be, without doubt, one of the very few most important and immediately practical ever written.

1-0 out of 5 stars Deaf to my Body's Cries!
These are WORDS OF WISDOM, self-published at his own expense and because of the conspiracy to keep water a SECRET, by a True Compassionate Saint, Scholar and Genius. I was not a healthy person before discovering water. Thanks to water, I have cured myself of cancer of every major organ, leukaemia, anaemia and hyperchromatosis and auto-immune disorders such as lupus, scleroderma, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Wegener's granulomatosis, Addison's disease, Crohn's disease, Sjogren's syndrome,Goodpasture's syndrome, and Grave's Disease. I also had suffered from Parkinson's Disease and Diabetes I and II and Hepatitis A, B, C, and D. Specialists were of no help - they accused me of hypochondriasis (and refused to test me for it although they referred me to a psychopharmacologist who prescribed several drugs - none of which were generic - thus supporting the conspiracy of the pharmaceutical industry and the government and the American Medical Association to keep America drugged and TOXIC)and told me that my tests were NORMAL and NEGATIVE - and refused to talk to me when I asked WHO the arbiters of NORMAL were? WHO determines whether or not your red and white blood counts are "NORMAL"? I have not been able to get an answer to this question. Do we have tests for EVERY viral and bacterial infection out there? NO! But with water, we don't NEED tests or harmful drugs because water is THE CLEANER PAR EXCELLENT. Think about it - when you spill a substance, do you THINK about what it is before sponging it up? NO. You don't need to think with water - it is natural and clear. It is odourless, colourless and tasteless. It is the perfect substance. If more people drank water and listened to their dying dehydrated cells' calling out for the ELIXER OF LIFE, we would be a 3H - happy, healthy and hydrated! Don't let the naysaying of a few quacks who are only in it for the money deter you. Take your life into your own hands - drink water - lots and often! ... Read more

Book Description

Paul Farmer has battled AIDS in rural Haiti and deadly strains of drug-resistant tuberculosis in the slums of Peru. A physician-anthropologist with more than fifteen years in the field, Farmer writes from the front lines of the war against these modern plagues and shows why, even more than those of history, they target the poor. This "peculiarly modern inequality" that permeates AIDS, TB, malaria, and typhoid in the modern world, and that feeds emerging (or re-emerging) infectious diseases such as Ebola and cholera, is laid bare in Farmer's harrowing stories of sickness and suffering.

Challenging the accepted methodologies of epidemiology and international health, he points out that most current explanatory strategies, from "cost-effectiveness" to patient "noncompliance," inevitably lead to blaming the victims. In reality, larger forces, global as well as local, determine why some people are sick and others are shielded from risk. Yet this moving account is far from a hopeless inventory of insoluble problems. Farmer writes of what can be done in the face of seemingly overwhelming odds, by physicians determined to treat those in need. Infections and Inequalities weds meticulous scholarship with a passion for solutions-remedies for the plagues of the poor and the social maladies that have sustained them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Paul Farmer-- the Cassandra Prophet
Anyone who has traveled to a third world country and viewed the slums and abhorrent conditions millions of people live in,
with no basic sanitation or clean drinking water, will not be surprised by Dr. Paul Farmer's findings regarding the emergence of deadly pathogens in these countries. He ties the spread of AIDS in third world countries to the sex trade,an economic necessity for many young women, men and children, and the easier transmittal of the disease due to untreated STDs. His ethnographic studies of HIV positive women in Haiti, who are more likely to be partners of soldiers or truck drivers, two of the few paying professions in that country, provides another economic link to this disease. Most disturbing are his findings regarding multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, which is often a presenter disease of HIV. An estimated one third of tuberculosis cases in the US occur in someone born outside of the country, and Farmer feels that one third of the world's population harbors the tubercle bacillus, which easily emerges when someone's body is broken down by poor nutrition, other illness or a compromised immune system.
The vignettes of patients he has treated and saved, or was too late to save, place an unforgettable face on these diseases. He attacks arguments against treating third world tuberculosis and HIV as morally unsound and compares the costs of military campaigns against the pittance spent on
drugs that could save millions of lives. Another disturbing book- a worthy winner of the Magaret Mead Award.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shining a Light
Dr. Farmer sums up what you can hear in his lectures (he is an amazing speaker), read in journals, and hear in his interviews: The "modern day plagues" result directly from Structural Violence. I read this book for my culture and health class and could not put it down. He writes with an eloquence unheard of in most anthropologists while at the same time with the passion of a deeply concerned physician. Although in some points the book can get repetitive (as case studies overlap) it is a spectacular, enlightening read that I would recommend to anyone, particularly potential (and current) medical anthropologists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complex causality: why people are really at risk for disease
Finally Dr. Farmer couples his lucid historical, political and economic analyses of the conditions that put the poor at risk for bad health outcomes, with a plainly indignant calling out of healthcare professionals and healthcare organizations to make honest efforts to understand and remedy conditions which would never be tolerated among the well off in Western nations. In his goundbreaking, earlier books, "AIDS and Accusations," and "The Uses of Haiti," Dr. Farmer matter of factly discusses the global and local structural conditions and misrepresentations which led to the spread of disease and persistent, dismal health conditions in Haiti. In "Infections and Inequality," Dr. Farmer adds moral overtones to incisive, sociopolitical analysis and his characteristic accounts of individuals suffering from disease. The book consequently provides a powerful reflection from a man who has worked in some of the world's poorest regions on what the benefits of medical technology mean for people who have not traditionally had access to them. A powerful, informative read that clearly reflects the years of experience of a physician who has wrestled with the global responsibility of caring for the those who are worst off. An obligatory read for anyone even thinking of working for the impoverished of the world. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Sad
Unfortunately we lost Dr. Merroitt. G. Wagner has stepped up and authored the ninth edition of Practical electrocardiography. The book hits the basics - THere are a plethorea of books addressing the basics. Historically I would turn to Marriott (or Leo Schameroff - no longer in print) for help with the in depth analysis. The 9th edition falls short - giving narrative examples and referrencing non existent ecg strips - This book is missing several examples of ECG tracings and is a sad tribute to a great electrocardiographer, may he rest in peace.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Standard Text
Given that electrocardiography is a difficult subject to begin to understand, Wagner has continued the excellent work of Dr. Marriott by updating and expanding on the classic text.

3-0 out of 5 stars Still a work in progress
This book starts with a great foundation, but sadly does very little beyond that. This edition, like the 9th, does provide useful material, even if it is recycled. But, it does little to capture the attention of the reader and hold it throughout the text. Readers of 8th and earlier editions will be disappointed at the readability. Beginners might be better served by passing over this text and trying to bribe someone into selling their 8th edition. The last by Marriott himself, standing the test of time!

3-0 out of 5 stars This is easy to understand
Recenty I have gotten this. This is easy to understand ! But I have just found many misprints, particulary there are cases that descriptions may be inconsistent with figures. I hope that these inconsistency would have been corrected in tenth edition.

This is the gold standard for ECG interpretation. It is THE starting point for beginners. No better resource exists for seasoned practitioners. ... Read more

Book Description

Medical Virology first appeared in 1970 and was immediately hailed as a classic. The Fourth Edition has been completely updated, substantially rewritten, and considerably expanded. Acknowledging that today's students possess a more sophisticated background of molecular and cellular biology, the book is pitched a little higher than was the third edition. Nevertheless, it maintains the exceptionally high standards of the three previous editions, including the now famous user-friendly style. Hundreds of instructive diagrams and succinct tables smooth the path for the reader. Extensive lists of recent authoritative reviews at the end of each of the 36 chapters simplifies the reader's entry into the scientific literature. Throughout, the focus is on fundamental principles, mechanisms and basic facts, rather than on overwhelming detail.
Part I of the book, expanded to over 400 pages, comprises in effect a self-contained overview of the Principles of Virology. Part II, entitled Viruses of Humans, deals comprehensively with all the families of human viruses. Extensive coverage is given to the molecular biology of the viruses and of viral replication, pathogenesis and immunity, clinical features of all important diseases caused by all viruses affecting humans, the latest laboratory diagnostic methods, epidemiology and control, including chemotherapy and vaccines.
This lucid and concise yet comprehensive text is admirably suited to the needs not only of advanced students of science and medicine but also particularly of postgraduate students, teachers, and research workers in all areas of virology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Virology book
While at first approach I backed away from this book, I later went back to it and found it to be the book to learn virology from. I've tried other books and they fail in comparison. This book teaches you a great amount of information on virology and has a special part for information on the different virus types. This book is highly recommended to students or hobbyists - though beware some information on genetics, chemistry and regular biology might be useful and come in handy, it is not required - just skip any technical parts in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars a small handbook sized textbook
As I have made out in my title, this is the best way I can describe this book. Its small size contradicts its vast amount of information within. With respect to the other reviewer the book I find is excellent at delivering highly detailed information in the fewest words - cutting to the chase - however like the other reviewer comments, its detail can be off putting without sufficient back up by other texts. In this respect the book is probably best thought of as reference material for instant access to cutting edge information on viruses. The book also has sections that individually deal with the virus families and allow the reader to quickly access information regarding viruses belonging to each family, which is particularly useful considering the quagmire of virus names.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is not too great for beginning virologists
Medical Virology is not an ideal book for students new to virology. It is currently the prescribed text for an undergraduate course that I am taking, and unfortunately, the book is not well done. Fortunately for me, I've had other courses that provided the background that this book doesn't present in a coherent manner. The book introduces a topic, starts to explain it, and then just drops it. While it might be a good overview for people familiar with virology, students just starting out would be better served by buying Fundamental Virology. ... Read more

Book Description

Sure to become the backbone of a diverse range of academic programs in the health professions! Epidemiology as a discipline has evolved over the years from a relatively obscure field in public health and preventive medicine to one that has gained increased prominence in all the health sciences, including health education, health administration, environmental health, allied health, and nursing. This comprehensive, user friendly, and academically sound textbook covers the basic principles and methods of epidemiology in such a way that will appeal to a broad range of undergraduate and graduate students in the health professions. Beyond its clear, concise writing, Essential Epidemiology offers unique pedagogic aids, such as an algorithm to help students identify epidemiologic study designs, a discussion of problems students typically encounter in calculating and interpreting incidence rates, and annotated step-by-step solutions to numerical problems. In addition, the text introduces topics sometimes ignored in other texts, such as hybrid studies, the controversy surrounding the use of hypothesis testing versus confidence intervals, and the differences between rate and risk measurements. Helpful features contained in each chapter include: 1) highlighted learning objectives and a brief overview; 2) study questions and practical exercises; 3) bulleted summary to stress key points; 4) list of key terms, all boldfaced within text; 5) useful tables and figures to clarify important material; 6) boxed exhibits with engaging supplementary information; 7) sample problems with step-by-step solutions to illustrate essential calculations; and 8) easily remembered mathematical symbols to aid memorization of formulas. ... * It's easy to read and understand. It has a non-academic style of writing that's easy to follow.
* It not only explains what the different epidemiological parameters are, but teaches the reader how to calculate them. Case studies are then given demonstrating the calculations with finer points highlighted and explained.

This definitive and essential source of reference has been thoroughly updated and revised to meet the requirements of all laboratories involved in the analysis of human semen. The book sets out the fundamental laboratory techniques that should be employed in the diagnosis of male infertility. The text includes descriptions of how to construct a conventional semen profile and provides standardized protocols for performing several optional diagnostic procedures. Cure, not treatment, is the subject of this book. In 1991 Dr. Clark discovered the source of HIV. Once the source became clear the cure became obvious. but would it work? After curing 53 cases in a row, all who used this method, Dr. Clark could wait no longer to present these findings. Since that time many more have been cured, too many to be added to this book. Most important is adding yourself to that list!

Electricity can now be used to kill bacteria, viruses and parasites in minutes, not days or weeks as antibiotics require.

If you have been suffering from HIV infection or AIDS related illness, learn to build the electronic device that will stop it immediately. It is safe and without side effects addoes not interfere with any treatment you are now on. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Food for Thought - Course of Action?
It is clearly a highly controversial issue... HIV, AIDS, Parasites, Herbs, and "electroshock" therapy! Dr. Hulda Clark has been dismissed as a charlatan, a con artist, and a quack, but there is a HUGE world wide following of her practices and methods. While I do not have first hand experience with either HIV, or cancer, I did purchase the Cure for All Diseases, the Cure for All Cancers, and the Cure for HIV/AIDS out of both curiosity, and the desire to maintain an open mind and informed opinion of the alternative therapies in question. After reading most of the Cure for All Diseases, I would say that much of Dr. Clark's work is rooted in firm scientific reason and simply explores pathways of healing that no longer seem in "vogue" in a todays highly clinical and "drug-happy" medical society. I cannot recommend that someone suffering from HIV/AIDS quit their medications and immediately jump both feet first into this methodology. I CAN recommend that anyone who recognizes the value of natural healing and alternative medicine to STRONGLY consider SUPPLEMENTING their current course of treatment with the steps outlined in the book. If anything, the basic methods of preventing re-infestations and cleaning your environment will support better immune function.. and, who knows?! Some may experience a decreased or zero count viral load as a result of the combined therapies.. I will all of you reading this the best of both worlds, but please make an informed choice and be open to non-traditional medical doctrines.. Much of what we know of medicine, and many of our most potent "drugs" are developed ot derived from traditional medicines and plants.
Peace.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Epidemic is Finally Over!
Snails with HIV, all HIV/Aids victims have benzene in their thymus... parasites in their blood...some eat toast, some drink bottled water, some use cologne...WHATS GOING ON HERE! Hulda Clark has definitely done her homework! The causes are simply and carefully and emphatically spelled out. The cure is simple---kill the parasites that the virus MUST have to survive. Its just that simple, and the numerous CONSECUTIVE successes are the invitation to life as it was meant to be... DISEASE FREE! I am proud to tell anyone who wants to know the TRUTH about 'rumors' of AIDS cures---buy this book, follow its simple, inexpensive protocols and you will NEVER be concerned with HIV or Aids ever again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Revolutionary Read
It has been many years since I read this book, after I read one of Dr. Clark's other books on curing cancer. I had cancer, and used her ideas to complement my chemo. I am cancer-free still, over eight years later. Although I cannot prove that the herbs helped me, I truly don't believe I would be alive today if I had not found Dr. Clark's books. I started a website to tell others about the books, and one of my acquaintences who had been diagnosed with HIV/AIDS told me he was having phenomenal results by following Dr. Clark's suggestions, in addition to other things he was trying at the time. I won't tell you here what herbs Dr. Clark suggests because it is best to read the books and get a "feel" for what she says yourself. That is why she calls it "self-health," because she believes most of us are intelligent enough to try to help ourselves and take responsibility for our health. At the very least, it is a facinating read. My husband built the "zapper" for me with parts that he found at Radio Shack. By the way, my website is called Health-Hut. I cannot post the url in this review, but invite you to visit and read more about this book there, along with the disclaimer. If you are reading this because of a link from our site, thank you for visiting. Your friends at Health Hut.

5-0 out of 5 stars To the above critics of Mrs. Clark...with love
After reviewing the 2 above attacks on Hulda Clark, it is clear that one of the following scenarios are the case:1) unintentional disinformationist.........2)intentional disinformationist =)I actually laughed after reading the 'critique' entitled "hogwash". It makes for a combined comical & disturbing notion that someone, somewhere, somehow.... could be that ignorant :-o. As one who has been raised to know what goes on, people such as this are easy to dismiss as 'not well' and unfit to have their opinion looked at with a straight face. There are professonals to do the job pal.. while it's good that you're not at that level....in my humble opinion....you still...for lack of a better word.... suck¿"I would never reccommend this to my patients"....WE KNOW . The ability to think really does feel good... it may behoove you to take that challenge-you ARE somebody =)As far as the research by this author goes, I am making it a top priority to get the word out to absolutely everyone. Flyers, posters, bumper stickers(that can be conveniently placed on telephone polls, medical buildings, hospitals, laundry rooms, the foreheads of MDs,etc) and to ceo's and owners of the pharmeceutical companies who murder our children and profit from disease itself, and our congress who funds the one organization that covers up their crimes against humanity, the Food & Drug Administration. I REPEAT, God bless you my sweet woman for you have provided a remedy to the world's largest disease. I should have known that it would take a smart woman to solve the riddle of life. Your altruistic outpouring will be enjoyed world-wide. To know that the cure is inexpensive and nonpharmaceutical, is a joy. I read the 2003 version of your book. It is truly sad that the naysayers could think of nothing else to do with themselves but pollute the reviews of your books. Rest assured that those among us who see through their charade could care less what they have to say. One needs only to speak to some of the people you have cured or otherwise cleaned up their health through your advise. No one on the planet earth has explained the science of the digestive track and workings of the body and its organs as well as you have. Even I, a laywoman could follow your instructions. I don't have the disease but I sure intent to practice some of your preventive health features to avoid parasites, worms, and other microscopic organisms. So my dear lady, thank you millions, no trillions. Just finished reading the book and feel very charged up. The information provided is well organized and well reasoned and it makes sense! I'm actually believing again that it is possible to live well with fibromyalgia.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Terrific and Comprehensive Book I Wish I'd Had From Day 1!
I got my copy and sat down and read every word right away (not having a fibro-fog day today!), and had to come over here right now to write this. All I can say is, "WOW!" But I really wish I had this book 4 years ago when I was first diagnosed with fibromyalgia. It only took me 3 doctors over 2 years to get diagnosed...hah...I'm one of the lucky ones I guess. I wish I had this book, because the overview of symptoms would have already helped me cut to the chase and go right to a doctor who would figure this out more quickly. As it was, I went to my primary care doctor, and an infectious disease guy, and an orthopedics doctor, and even a chiropracter, before I finally saw a holistic doctor who specialized in fibromyalgia. Even then, I was so tired, and everything hurt really bad, and the last thing in the world I could stand was the idea of having to start surfing a hundred different web sites and books trying to figure out what I should be doing. Even though I had a good doctor, he didn't have much time to explain everything.

Mary Shoman did all the homework that I would like to have done when I was so sick, but when you're flat on your back on the couch and you can barely move, it's kind of hard to do much. She talks about regular drugs, vitamins, herbs, diet, alternative things you can do, and includes a list of experts from around the country who specialize in treating fibromyalgia and CFIDS. There's a long list of web sites -- I'm going to start checking them out as soon as I finish writing this review -- and suport groups even.

I've read a few of the books on fibromyalgia and they were pretty good, but this one really made sense to me. It doesn't tell me that one particular thing will cure me, but it goes through how I can find out what's going to work best for me. And it was really good to see that I'm already doing some of the things she talks about in the book, so that tells me that my doctor and I aren't totally off base. I'm about 75% back to where I was before I got fibro, but I want to feel 100%.

I can't wait to bring it in to my doctor to talk about some more things we might be able to try that I read about! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very time efficient book that gets straight to the point
I came across this book randomly in my medical school library and was a bit leary of it because of the title. "XYZ in 30 days" type titles sound hokey to me, but the book itself is anything but.

The main strength of the text is its clear, logical approach in explaining the various infectious disease syndromes. Very straightforward, great summaries of key points every few pages, and insightful, readily understandable diagrams (and good photos). Too many books written for med students present similar material but too heavily from the perspective of basic microbiology (genetics, virulence factors up the ying-yang, research speculations, etc) which is generally NOT useful for medical students (when in excess). We primarily need to know clinical presentation, course of illness, diagnostic criteria, and treatment protocols. For these categories this book is wonderful and hard to beat. It also balances this with the obligatory basic microbiology but it is not in excess and seemingly always clinically relevant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best entry level book
This book by Charlie Janeway is considered to be one of the best books for entry level students. His colleagues say Dr. Janeway cherished every moment that he spent in shaping this book since he took utmost joy in teaching and training students. Eventhough he is no more physically, his book will be read and remembered by almost every student in Immunology. The treatment of subject, arrangement of topics and the figures in this book are at the very best. I am sure that readers will be able to absorb the basic principles in a systematic way with sound experimental insights which will be with them forever.
You also have the advantage of seeing the immune system as a friend as well as a foe. This book beautifully explains how immune system protects us from infections as well as creates major health problems when it doesn't work properly. This way of learning Immunology helps you learn the subject with big picture in mind. I strongly recommend this book for every student who takes introductory or intermediate level course in Immunology. After all, Immunology is one of the most fascinating scientific disciplines to work on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Accurate, clear and comprehensive immunological knowledge
Janeway's Immunobiology is probably the best immunology book that someone really interested in immunology should take to the mythical desert island. One can enjoy it by its clarity from the basic graduate courses, and then keep reading it when doing research and pursuing hypothesis on the most advanced immunological topics. Many times I have found better organized and complete information on this book (even the old editions!) than on the latest reviews on specialized journals. The intense and careful work displayed to promote the real understanding on the concepts and the relations between immune components is impressive. Even more, the success in explanation is such that the authour takes the risk to have his book neglected as "too easy" by first time readers. However, immunology researchers in contact with the often chaotic and contradictory immunological literature can really appreciate the incredible amount of critical work invested and the intellectual gift of the author (authors) to abstract complex immune phenomena into nicely designed and biologically precise "cartoons". The focus on the evolutionary and functional consequences/origins of the immune mechanisms and structures makes Janeway's book one of the most refreshing and valuable voices in a sometimes too-technically oriented discipline. An impressive accomplishment never praised enough.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good start
This is an excellent primer for anyone wishing to learn more about immunology. For the more advenced student, Bill Paul's Fundamental Immunology is a must.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book rocks!
This is by far the most well written immunology text I have encountered. Even the most difficult concepts are presented in the most understandable manner. This book is very extensive in the material it covers and is highly recommended for an advanced undergraduate student or as an introductory graduate text. By far the feature most appealing to me are the extensive images and cartoons used in this text, used quite effectively to elucidate even the most difficult of topics. This visual presentation style combined with the extensive and highly readble coverage of relevant material make this a must have for any serious student. The book is also updated frequently I believe a new edition is on the way slated to be publsihed in April 2004.

Where's your next disease coming from? From anywhere in the world--from overflowing sewage in Cairo, from a war zone in Rwanda, from an energy-efficient office building in California, from a pig farm in China or North Carolina. "Preparedness demands understanding," writes Pulitzer-winning journalist Laurie Garrett, and in this precursor to Betrayal of Trust: The Collapse of Global Public Health, she shows a clear understanding of the patterns lying beneath the new diseases in the headlines (AIDS, Lyme) and the old ones resurgent (tuberculosis, cholera). As the human population explodes, ecologies collapse and simplify, and disease organisms move into the gaps. As globalization continues, diseases can move from one country to another as fast as an airplane can fly.

While the human race battles itself ... the advantage moves to the microbes' court. They are our predators and they will be victorious if we, Homo sapiens, do not learn how to live in a rational global village that affords the microbes few opportunities.

Her picture is not entirely bleak. Epidemics grow when a disease outbreak is amplified--by contaminated water supplies, by shared needles, by recirculated air, by prostitution. And controlling the amplifiers of disease is within our power; it's a matter of money, people, and will. --Mary Ellen Curtin ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Survival of the fittest.....
It's taken me a week to read Laurie Garrett's THE COMING PLAGUE. I work for one of the organizations Garrett cites frequently, and was aware of much of the content of the book before I began to read, but it helps to be reminded.

In the mid-70s I studied epidemiology, demography and biostatistics at Georgetown as part of my graduate work. One of the statistics I learned to compute was a neonatal mortality rate based on specific causes of death--infectious and other. We were convinced the infectious disease rates had been dropping for hundreds of years owing to human intervention and would continue to do so. Shortly after I graduated, drug resistant strains of microbes caused the infectious rates to climb again.

The world's population has grown dramatically in the past 100 years (1.5 billion to 6 billion) and in all liklihood will continue to expand a while longer (15 billion by 2050), but the AIDS plague with all it's attendent drug-resisitant diseases may do for humanity what the Black Plague did for humanity in the 14th Century--eliminate much of it.

Garrett says the microbes don't have to win, but I'm afraid they will. "Know-nothing" politicians, "capable-survivor" bureacrats, tyrants like Idi Amin and Sadam Hussein, wars spurred by ethnic hatred and religious fanaticism, homophobia, misogyny, unbridled and unregulated international commerce and exploitation of labor, degradation of the world's forests and oceans, and refugee movements all ensure the microbes will win. From the tuberculosis epidemics of the industrial age of the 19th century, to the spread of drug resistant malaria by troops and civilians in WWII, to the current spread of AIDS and drug resistent forms of TB across the world, the germs are having a field day. Garrett's book's subtitle is "Newly Emerging Diseases in a World Out of Balance" -- and yes, Al Gore is mentioned-- a man who actually understands the disease/ecological balancing issues.

The world took a giant backstep in the 1980s when the U.S. leaders pretty much looked the other way and AIDS got the upper hand. With the return of the same politicians to power, why shouldn't we dispair, especially when the first act of the new administration is to pull funding from family planning agencies, who are fighting the very factors that can lead to the end of humanity--overpopulation and unprotected sex.

I kept thinking of Edgar Allen Poe's short story, "The Mask of the Red Death" as I read this book--During a plague, a group of wealthy nobles and their families sequester themselves away in a castle where they think they are safe from the disease. One night they hold a masked ball and discover that death is in their midst. You can't run and you can't hide--death is in our midst. So, you better act. Garrett lists the things we need to do, and if your're reading this review, you probably already know many of them, but, read her book anyway, just to make sure.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is your wake up call
If you live in the comfy West, Third World health issues can seem about as remote as McDonald's on Mars. Laurie Garrett's accessible, passionate book reminds us that despite the cultural, political and economical crevasses that separate nations, humankind is united by a number of factors, and vulnerability to the microbial world is one of them. Disease has no respect for boundaries and complacency is our enemy. The Coming Plague is indeed an elaborate, riveting detective story and Garrett's CDC cowboy heroes who became the cavalry in the most remote and dangerous of locations in their search for the source of contagious disease, became my own. I note that there has been criticism of Garrett for for alleged scientific and research inaccuracies. The message is still crystal clear: the health of humankind needs a global perspective and global policy. It's a weighty subject but Garrett turns it into a thrilling read that I couldn't put down. I came away convinced that no matter who we are, we should be cannily aware of the newly emerging diseases, the formidable power of the microbial world, and our responsibility as individuals in contributing to global health. Garrett explains how health and disease have a domino effect. What goes around, comes around. This is Buddhist philosophy in practice. Single actions have universal ramifications. For example, Garrett shows how misuse of antibiotics in treating tuberculosis in the former Soviet Union impacts on vulnerability to the disease worldwide. Reading of the losing battle against malaria deeply saddened me when winning the battle seemed to be within grasp. It appears that politics and medicine are joined at the hip. Some years ago Rachel Carson's Silent Spring influenced me. The Coming Plague is similarly inspiring. And perhaps McDonald's on Mars doesn't seem so far away after all.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information buried in a bunch liberal crap.
Garrett presents much very interesting information about some of the most deadly diseases in the world, like Machupo and Lassa fever. There are fantastic accounts of how these diseases have been tracked to their sources, or attempted to be tracked to their sources, and how they have been combated thus far. The point is quite well made that these threats are still looming on the horizon and humanity will need to be continually finding more effective ways of control. However, along with all the true accounts and bits of scientific relevance is a running liberal commentary, which is to be expected from somebody with ties to Harvard, I guess. It slows down the narrative with its inevitable logical contradictions, especially when dealing with the AIDS issue and "alternative lifestyles"--homosexuality is shown to be one of the major causes of the spread of AIDS, yet the problem is not homosexuality, but ineffective control measures...hmmmm (and somehow, even things like States' rights get brought in). The book is at times exciting and frightening, but you have to be able to stomach a large dose of liberal hogwash in your diet to be able to choke this one down. Personally, I had trouble with some bad after-taste.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Coming Plague
Outstanding! This book is an excellent read! I read the Hot Zone 2 years ago and this is even better. Garrett gives fantastic insight and detail concerning many deadly viruses that have attacked humankind in the 20th century and continue to threaten us. Not only this, but she goes on to highlight the feats and bravery of the scientist that have gone to battle with these horrific microbes over the past century. A stunning account of how disease is a part of nature, yet we as humans often aid to its spread. A sobering, eye opening book. As unsettling as it is, some nights it was hard to put down. One of the best books I've ever read. Bravo for Ms. Garrett

4-0 out of 5 stars One Helpful Tool
I have read the previous reviews, and I can honestly say that I recommend this book. Listen, this is just one tool in the search for answers. First of all, anyone who does not think that candida causes severe symptoms and illness has never had the problem!! Only through months and years of trial and error with doctors, anti-fungal drugs, and diet can you truly understand what is is like to live with CRS. So, take this book for what it is, one tool in the fight against candida. Educate yourself, but don't just look to one book, doctor, friend, etc., for all of the answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
The information in this book changed my life. The 'Tradional Doctors' have no knowledge of Candida, I could not find out what was wrong with me until I read the book. This book was an answer to prayer. Thank You Dr. Crook

5-0 out of 5 stars This is required reading for anyone who wants genuine
quality of life and medical care.

This book has really been a turning point in my own health trials and trevails and I applaud Dr. Crook and his confederates for persisting despite the typical reaction of the public in rejecting that which is not add water and mix. And yet, this is as simple as that in many ways.

I also enjoyed Proof Positive and really think that if Dr. Nedley could explore the yeast connection he would really have a very well rounded book because Dr. Crook has not ignored the very real and pervasive danger of chemicals and their deleterious effect on us humans and it's correlation to yeast problems.

Highly recommended reading for the intelligent and open minded.

4-0 out of 5 stars Read me after reading all the negative reviews
This book helped me as I am sure that it has helped others. Other reviewers stated that they couldnt find the info that they were looking for or that he advertised other books. You must look closely into this book and you will find your answers.
