4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for the just-diagnosed
This is a good fibromyalgia book to buy if you have just been diagnosed and you are looking for practical advice on how to cope with your illness. Though not as detailed and complete as Starlanyl and Copeland's Fibromyalgia and Chronic Myofascial Pain Syndrome, it is also less overwhelming and so is particularly good for someone who is feeling overwhelmed, doesn't like a lot of medical information, or has a mild form of the disease. The chapters "You aren't alone", "Making Lifestyle adjustments," and "Practical helps for specific problems" are quite good, as are the three chapters on managing fatigue, stress, and flareups.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best book I have read on this subject.
This book has brought peace of mind and a greater understanding of what is happening in my body. No one enjoys chronic pain and it is confusing to feel so full of pain everywhere one day and then feel better the next only to ache worse the following day. This book makes one realize that this is part of the syndrome. It offers hope and acceptance and is easy to understand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Making Sense Out of A Mysterious Illness
When my doctor told me he thought I had fibromyalgia, I thought "Oh, great! A garbage can diagnosis--he's telling me something just to keep me happy." I had gone through every pamphlet on the office wall and this was the last one he had that he could hand to me. It didn't make me feel any better. I still have the sleep disorder, the chronic pain and fatigue. I have periods in which I can be semi-normal, and other periods when I'm a zombie. My employer gave up on me and my government doesn't believe I have a disability that should be covered by SSDI. Meanwhile, I suffer.

So, it's a relief to find a book that helps me make sense of this. I still feel rotten but I feel more comfortable with the diagnosis, and I now have answers that may help me reclaim a more normal life. That's more than I thought possible before reading this book. This book is recommended by the Fibromyalgia Network as a good starting point and reference for those who have fibromyalgia, and for their ! families who need to know what to make of it. I agree.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you can afford only one FM book, this is the one to buy!
There are many books on Fibromyalgia Syndrome out there, many offer what is implied as the "quick fix". Well gang there IS no quick fix! BUT if you really want to learn more about your FM then this is the book you need to buy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a must have book!
This book helps affected/infected individual understand the nutritional needs of the body and also goes on to describe many other aspects of HIV. This book is definitely a must have for HIV+ individuals and caregivers/supporters.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for those with HIV & for their support system.
Dr.Romeyn has addressed one of the most serious problems facing people with HIV, the devastating bodily wasting that occurs in those struggling with the effects of this disease. Her work is a comprehensive approach to nutritional treatment. She is articulate and yet not patronizing. Her concern and compassion for those who suffer from this dissease is quite apparent. I believe those who see her in her private practice are most fortunate. I am grateful for her work, and have given copies of this book to several men and women both in the parish and in the community at large. There is a great need in the larger community for this quality of information. I highly recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but...
This is an informative book. However, it did not meet my expectations. It even gets boring sometimes. However, it is a good book to have if you are interested in learning more about vitamins and minerals, and their effect with HIV/AIDS.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent for physician, patient, or friend
I found this book to be an excellent resource to provide both an overview of the HIV/AIDS disease process, and to help formulate a plan for one's management and care. As a third year medical student, I am often presented with only the pathology and epidemiology of a disease or illness, and left to invision the person afflicted on my own. Dr. Romeyn helped to put a face on both the person/patient affected, as well as the physician actively caring for them. In addition, she still managed to convey the essentials that anyone - physician, patient, or friend - should know and understand. This is a very helpful book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book!
I absolutely hate peripheral nerve disorders. That's probably because I'm not good at diagnosing them. But, if I had this book at the start of my training, perhaps things would be different. This book is an absolute gem. It has great illustrations and has complete listings of movements, muscles, nerves, and roots. It has diagrams of the plexuses as well. There is a handy table in the back on most common muscle movements, etc. It's biggest drawback is that it does not fit in a hospital coat's pocket.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reliable, pamphlet sized, clinical reference
New edition of a handy clinical reference that has been around for 50 years. Early editions had photos in B&W, color in this version adds nothing. For every muscle there is a photo of a clinical evaluation showing position of the limb etc and the instructions ("The patient tries to flex against resistance"). For each muscle there is listed the spinal segments and periferal nerve. Included are standard sensory maps and plexus diagrams. Fits into your instrument bag or white coat pocket. Worth getting if you see only 5 neuro-muscular problems a year!

5-0 out of 5 stars The single best book for the peripheral nervous system exam
I am a professor of neurology and recommend this book to anyone who is interested in knowing how to examine the peripheral nervous system. The book shows photographs and brief explanatory text demonstrating how to examine all major muscles. The book also contains diagrams showing the sensory distribution of all major sensory nerves and nerve roots. The book also contains tables showing each muscle, nerve and nerve root supply. In summary, an excellent and inexpensive book on the peripheral nervous system exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding clinical guide, excellent pictures and diagrams.
This book is the best guide to learning and practicing the physical examination of the peripheral nervous system that I have ever encountered. As a practicing neurosurgeon, I consult it on a regular basis. The 60 page book features minimal text with excellent pictures and diagrams explaining the function and examination of each muscle and nerve. It is an outstanding resource for students, residents, and attendings in neurology, neurosurgery, internal medicine, and rehabilitation medicine. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Speculation
As a psychologist who has MVPS, I was surprised by the comments about personalities. This is my area of expertise and research. To date there are no studies to support any particular personality with MVP. As the book states, chest pain can be fearful-that goes for anyone with any type of chest pain. Nothing new learned there. Authors have lots of speculation. Stories of others with MVP will help you learn that you are not alone. However, most other MVP books help with this. On a positive note, we can always use books on MVPS to increase the visibility of this syndrome. Only wish this was more medically based. I agree with a previous commentary that references are to a newsletter-not evidenced based medicine!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is my new "Bible"
This book talks about everything that other books do not talk about. Yes, "The Propalspe Personality". Another reviewer asked for "facts" unfortunately, MVPS has not been researched so there are very few small studies. If you have MVPS you will understand everything said in this book and finally you will understand that you are not crazy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I recently book all the books on Amazon.com on MVP. The best one out of all of them is Taking Control--the latest edition. This book is good, but lacks some credibility. It's written by patients with a forward by a cardiologist. I believe some of the advice is helpful and will benefit MVP people.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of helpful ideas
Unlike a few others, I found that there was some good concrete evidence in this book. I have found that the kind of evidence a researcher looks for is quite hard to find on the topic of Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome. The original writer and researcher in this field, Lyn Frederickson, wrote the first and definitive book on this topic back in 1988. I would disagree with another reviewer and say that Ms. Scordo's book (rather than leading the way) basically restates Ms. Frederickson's work while discounting the need for medication and relies totally on exercise , meditation and alternative therapies. This new book delves more deeply while crediting Ms. Frederickson and gives the latest information including biological, physical and medicational aspects of the syndrome. Although Ms.Frederickson's book is now out of print I think it only proper to give her the credit she deserves.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
This is a must read for anyone who has the syndrome, or knows someone with the syndrome. It is packed with great information to use when you suffer from this syndrome. It has very good stories written by people who have Mitral Valve Prolapse. It also helps the people that are around the ones who have MVP. I enjoyed the parts of this book that listed ways for you to cope better everyday of your life, and the medications you can take to have control of your life. ... Read more

Book Description

AIDS is devastating many areas of sub-Saharan Africa.

* Over twelve million people in the region have died of AIDS in the past decade.

* Over 29.4 million people in the region are infected with HIV.

* Of the eleven people who contract HIV each minute in the world, ten live in sub-Saharan Africa.

* With no known cure and no vaccine as yet available, an estimated 60% of Africans under the age of eighteen today will be dead of AIDS before they reach 45 years of age.

* Most prevention programs have largely failed because the research behind them has focused primarily on "risk groups," behavioral change models, and flawed understandings of cultural practices.

HIV and AIDS in Africa: Beyond Epidemiology seeks to shift the predominant understandings generated by biomedical and epidemiological research, recognizing that HIV transmission in sub-Saharan Africa is a complex and regionally-specific phenomenon rooted in local economies, deepening poverty, migration, gender, war, global economies, and cultural politics. International contributors from across the social sciences further our understanding of AIDS by looking at the epidemic from angles often inadequately explored. Ultimately, the underlying message of every contributor to this book is that AIDS is not going to diminish in Africa until social, gender, and economic inequities are addressed in meaningful ways. ... Book Description

An Introduction to Molecular Medicine and Gene Therapy

Edited by Thomas F. Kresina, Ph.D. Gene therapy, or the use of genetic manipulation for disease treatment, is derived from advances in genetics, molecular biology, clinical medicine, and human genomics. Molecular medicine, the application of molecular biological techniques to disease treatment and diagnosis, is derived from the development of human organ transplantation, pharmacotherapy, and elucidation of the human genome. An Introduction to Molecular Medicine and Gene Therapy provides a basis for interpreting new clinical and basic research findings in the areas of cloning, gene transfer, and targeting; the applications of genetic medicine to clinical conditions; ethics and governmental regulations; and the burgeoning fields of genomics, biotechnology, and bioinformatics. By dividing the material into three sections - an introduction to basic science, a review of clinical applications, and a discussion of the evolving issues related to gene therapy and molecular medicine-this comprehensive manual describes the basic approaches to the broad range of actual and potential genetic-based therapies. In addition, An Introduction to Molecular Medicine and Gene Therapy:
* Covers new frontiers in gene therapy, animal models, vectors, gene targeting, and ethical/legal considerations
* Provides organ-based reviews of current studies in gene therapy for monogenetic, multifactoral or polygenic disorders, and infectious diseases
* Includes bold-faced terms, key concepts, summaries, and lists of helpful references by subject in each chapter
* Contains appendices on commercial implications and a review of the history of gene therapy

This textbook offers a clear, concise writing style, drawing upon the expertise of the authors, all renowned researchers in their respective specialties of molecular medicine. Researchers in genetics and molecular medicine will all find An Introduction to Molecular Medicine and Gene Therapy to be an essential guide to the rapidly evolving field of gene therapy and its applications in molecular medicine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of a fascinating field
I did not have any special prior knowledge in biology or genetics. I needed to quickly get up to speed in this area for a professional reason. Parts of the book were a little difficult to understand at times, especially when it used many technical terms, but overall it provided me with an excellent overview of this fascinating and rapidly evolving field. I reduced one star because of not seeing enough illustrations and diagrams which in my view are essential in any text that includes complex concepts. With this book I also read "Genomes" to complement the basics of Genomics and together these two books did the trick!! Strongly reccomended to anyone who is interested in the field.

5-0 out of 5 stars .
The greatest difficulty with this field is that it is currently evolving at a rapid rate. Thus, books on the subject run the risk of being outdated before publication. However, Kresina and co-authors have done a solid job of reviewing existing methodologies, ethics and regulation of gene therapy as well as identifying some of the diseases for which this novel type of therapy could be applied. --Grant MacGregor, Emory University

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding introduction
I am very impressed with the breadth of subjects that Dr. Kresina covered and how he was able to relate their associations with either molecular medicine and/or gene therapy. More importantly, he draws the two disciplines together in a logical and constructive manner. The book is not only an outstanding introduction to molecular medicine and gene therapy, but will be a valued reference guide for much of the information contained in the chapters. The topics are timely and most of the authors extremely well known and respected in their respective fields. While the second section of the book is primarily the clinical application, it draws very nicely from the more basic science introductory chapters. Chapters 13-15 and the Appendix provide a discussion of issues which undoubtedly will become significantly associated with advances in molecular medicine and gene therapy. The book is laid out in an easy-to-read format and provides ready access to a variety of different subjects. The index is inclusive and the chapters cover their individual areas in an up-to-date manner..."An Introduction..." should remain an outstanding introduction and reference text for a variety of students - from undergraduate to postdoctoral to all levels of faculty and investigators. --Clifford J. 5-0 out of 5 stars The first book to read on FAS
Written by one of the leading behavioral experts in the field. A must for anyone with a problem child, in medicine or psychology, social or justice work...it is a recognized primer for the topic of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent FAS resource
Dr. Streissguth is one of the pioneers in the identification and treatment of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and the entire spectrum of congenital damage arising from in-utero exposure to alcohol. 25 years after the identification of this common and devastating disability, most efforts in the academic community still focus on definition and diagnosis, with relatively little attention paid to treatment. Dr. Streissguth stands atop the heap in extending her basic science research into the actual lives of affected individuals, their families, and the communities in which they live. I consider her the foremost authority in the academic community on exploring pragmatic options for helping affected individuals, families, and community.

This little volume is jam packed with useful information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best and most thorough guide to fetal alcohol syndrome

This is the most thorough book I have found on this subject. I truly recommend her book and am so grateful for her insights.

I read this wonderful book today and find it simple, easy to read, color illustrations are there with the text.I have read this book during my Genitourinary Examination and found it very useful, this is the main reason that I bought this book.I recommend this book to all the doctors related to genitourinary medicine, dermatologists and venereologist. It is also useful for the G.P's and medical students so that they can get a basic idea about the sexually transmitted diseases and their presentations. At the end I would like to congratulate Dr.H.Hunter Handsfield on writing such a wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful information
I believe this was a great book, it provided a lot of needed information on stds, the contraction of certain disease, etc. It was almost like a reference guide to me. It made me feel much better after i had gained all the needed knowledge. STD'S are one of those "quiet diseases", that nobody really talks about...However,you have to get your information from somewhere, right?....So why not get it from a reliable source with a huge layout of information.(even pictures) So, all in all i rate this book a 5, i doubt it could throughly describe std's any better then it did. ... Book Description

This book deals with infectious diseases --viral, bacterial, protozoan and helminth -- in terms of the dynamics of their interaction with host populations. The book combines mathematical models with extensive use of epidemiological and other data. This analytic framework is highly useful for the evaluation of public health strategies aimed at controlling or eradicating particular infections. Such a framework is increasingly important in light of the widespread concern for primary health care programs aimed at such diseases as measles, malaria, river blindness, sleeping sickness, and schistosomiasis, and the advent of AIDS/HIV and other emerging viruses. Throughout the book, the mathematics is used as a tool for thinking clearly about fundamental and applied problems having to do with infectious diseases. The book is divided into two parts, one dealing with microparasites (viruses, bacteria and protozoans) and the other with macroparasites (helminths and parasitic arthropods). Each part begins with simple models, developed in a biologically intuitive way, and then goes on to develop more complicated and realistic models as tools for public health planning. The book synthesizes previous work in this rapidly growing field (much of which is scattered between the ecological and the medical literature) with a good deal of new material. ... Read more

Book Description

Wilfrid Rall was a pioneer in establishing the integrative functions of neuronal dendrites that have provided a foundation for neurobiology in general and computational neuroscience in particular. This collection of fifteen previously published papers, some of them not widely available, have been carefully chosen and annotated by Rall's colleagues and other leading neuroscientists. It brings together Rall's work over more than forty years, including his first papers extending cable theory to complex dendritic trees, his ground-breaking paper introducing compartmental analysis to computational neuroscience, and his studies of synaptic integration in motoneurons, dendrodendritic interactions, plasticity of dendritic spines, and active dendritic properties.

Today it is well known that the brain's synaptic information is processed mostly in the dendrites where many of the plastic changes underlying learning and memory take place. It is particularly timely to look again at the work of a major creator of the field, to appreciate where things started and where they have led, and to correct any misinterpretations of Rall's work. The editors' introduction highlights the major insights that were gained from Rall's studies as well as from those of his collaborators and followers. It asks the questions that Rall proposed during his scientific career and briefly summarizes the answers.

The papers include commentaries by Milton Brightman, Robert E. Burke, William R. Holmes, Donald R. Humphrey, Julian J. B. Jack, John Miller, Stephen Redman, John Rinzel, Idan Segev, Gordon M. Shepherd, and Charles Wilson.

Book Description

Dr. Daniel J. Wallace is one of the world's leading authorities on lupus, the co-author of the leading textbook, and an eminent clinician who has treated over 2000 lupus patients, the largest such practice in America. His The Lupus Book, published in 1995, was the first book written by a leading authority specifically for patients. It immediately established itself as the most readable and helpful book on the disease. Now Dr. Wallace has completely revised The Lupus Book, incorporating a wealth of new information. This revised and expanded edition discusses the newest breakthroughs in drug treatments as well as the most recent discoveries in cellular, genetic, and immunological research--all laid out in user-friendly language that any patient could understand. Readers will discover 10 new blood tests your doctor can do, over 30 new drugs introduced since 1995, an extensive table of herbs that can be used for the disorder, and a large section on cognitive therapy and biofeedback. There are new sections on topics such as cell signaling, lupus susceptibility genes, selective cox-2 inhibitors, newer immunosuppressive therapies, and osteoporosis. And as in the first edition, the book provides absolutely lucid answers to such questions as: What causes lupus? How and where is the body affected? Can a woman with lupus have a baby? And how can one manage this disease? There is also a glossary of terms and an appendix listing lupus resource materials. Over a million Americans have lupus and some tens of thousands of patients die every year from the disease. The new edition of The Lupus Book offers these patients and their families a wealth of reliable, up-to-date information that will help them manage the disease and live a happier life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject!
I was diagnosised with Lupus 27 yrs ago at age 17. Since then, I have literally seen 100's of Drs, most of whom were, to be kind, not very knowledgeble about SLE. This book has been instrumental in getting me the care and treatment that I need. I take it with me to nearly all Drs appointments and have given copies of it to Drs who need the information that it contains to competently treat my illness.

If you're looking for a factual, well written and easy to understand book about Lupus, to either read yourself or to give to family and friends, this is the book you've been looking for.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most comprehensive lupus book available
The Lupus Book offers detailed information about lupus that is helpful for the newly diagnosed patient or, like my mother, for a lupus survivor of more than 20 years. It has become a "lupus Bible" for my mother and me, even after all the books we've read about lupus over the last 25 years. The book includes example anecdotes, useful information on treatments, and VITAL clinical information for each body system involved. Another Amazon.com customer recommended this book, and I am so grateful--we discovered a life-saving diagnostic procedure through this book that my mother's doctors had not intended to run. If you think you're getting the best care possible for your lupus, read this book and be certain of it. I can't recommend this book highly enough--it is quite literally life-preserving information for the chronically ill lupus patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Lupus Book
This is a great book for newly diagnosed Lupus patients. I have learned so much about the disease, and this book has answered alot of my questions about everything from skin rashes to lupus and pregnancy. The information is logically categorized and written in plain English....no medical double-talk here. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars LUPUS PATIENT REFERRAL
AS NEWLY DIAGNOSED LUPUS PATIENT, THIS BOOK HAS BEEN OF GREAT ASSISTANCE TO ME. YOU CAN READ IT IN THE ORDER OF THE QUESTIONS THAT YOU HAVE, OR FROM COVER TO COVER.

5-0 out of 5 stars a patient of dr. wallace and dr. hallegua
I had been suffering more than 6 years w/almost 30 different doctors all with different misdiagnosises and no relief when I met Dr. Hallegua who is Dr. Wallace's partner. In a week I had the blessing of a lupus diagnosis, a Dr who cared and meds that made a world of difference. I highly recomend their books to sufferers of lupus as well as their friends and family. They are the best in their feild, passionate in their work, and if you are not lucky enough to be their patient you can still be lucky enough to read their wise words.great aid in educating loved ones ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Office Text
I have NEVER had a more useful text in my office!! Gives a clear approach to common and often complex problems faced in outpatient and inpatient medicine. Includes topics such as thyroid nodule, hyponatremia (and other electrolyte abnormalities), elevated transaminases, fatigue, chronic diarrhea, constipation, solitary pulmonary nodule, mediastinal adenopathy, and really anything else you can think of!! I have never not been able to find what I needed quickly and easily. A must have for an busy office when you need to know what to do without all the peripheral talk!! I wish they had continue this series in Peds and OB/Gyn (there are old ones in these fields)as they were just as valuable!! An investment you won't regret. Great for residents!! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected...
This book is poorly written and not worth the money. Too much time spent on vague ideals and notions of death and dying not enough substance. Dr. Bolen spends very little time sharing the actual patient's stories and too much time on the New Age doctrine she so voraciously clings to. A New Age sermon is what this book is, not a search for meaning during life-threatening illness.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Right Book at the Right Time
This book is unlike any other I have read. The author is a Jungian analyst and clinical professor of psychiatry. To quote the book jacket, she "weaves myth, experience, and story to produce a book which at once illuminates the experience of the seriously ill patient and shows that facing one's mortality can be a life-transforming, and even a life-saving process". At a time when I was recovering from life-threatening illness myself, I heard the author speak at a lecture in Vancouver, and I found her use of classical myth as an allegory for illness to be quite effective. My friend Russell borrowed this book from me a few weeks before he died from cancer, and in a written note he described it as "the right book at the right time".

5-0 out of 5 stars Accepting the challenge of the joy of living
As a businesswoman seeking to ensure that the daily demands of running a successful organization do not impede my ability to live a life of integrity, I seek to read books that inspire me to find joy in daily living. As I read this book, I was in awe of the stories of the survivors who have found life that much more as a result of their experiences in dealing with terminal illness. I applaud Dr. Bolen's wisdom in sharing the challenges that make a healthy person realize how weak we are in comparison to these heroes who live so richly in spite of events. I found the book a great joy and, in fact, am reading it again - just in case I missed something the first time. I am positioning myself to "recreate" myself in a 2nd career and this book inspired me to think of using my skills in some way to assist women who find themselves dealing with their own terminal illness or the illness of a loved one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Danger and Opportunity
Early in this beautiful book, Jean Shinoda Bolen reminds us that the Chinese pictograph for "crisis" contains the ideograms for both "danger" and "opportunity." I've worked with clients who deal with life-threatening illness, and it is almost invariably true that this experience raises important "soul-evoking" questions. To explore those questions is inevitably healing, whether in body, spirit, or both.

As with any major crisis in life, we can either view the glass as half-empty, or see the gift that we are offered: the opportunity to re-examine our priorities, our relationships, and to do the soul-work that brings true meaning to life. Illness forces us to deal with "what we know in our bones" that we may have so far denied -- ways in which we are unhappy and/or self-destructive.

And those of us who do not have life-threatening illness can learn from those who do. As Bolen points out, "Life is a terminal condition, after all." So we can all benefit from answering the questions she poses: "What are we here for... What did we come to learn... What and who did we come here to love?"

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for anyone coming to terms with loss and mortality
Once again, Jean Shinoda Bolen has gifted us with her rich understanding of the human condition. In this book, she explores the psychological and spiritual value of death, profound loss, and illness without in any way minimizing the pain, angusih, and grief that come with these times in our loves. Bolen's book gives us a way to grapple with these passages on a deep spiritual, personal level, without turning to religious platitudes or what, for many, may feel like true-believer gloss overs. Instead, dying, illness, and loss are presented as psychological as well as physical events that resonate with rich personal and spiritual meaning and transformation, if we can allow them to do this. A wonderful book! ... Read more
