No small themes for historian William McNeill: he is a writer of big, sweeping books, from The Rise of the West to The History of the World. Plagues and Peoples considers the influence of infectious diseases on the course of history, and McNeill pays special attention to the Black Death of the 13th and 14th centuries, which killed millions across Europe and Asia. (At one point, writes McNeill, 10,000 people in Constantinople alone were dying each day from the plague.) With the new crop of plagues and epidemics in our own time, McNeill's quiet assertion that "in any effort to understand what lies ahead the role of infectious disease cannot properly be left out of consideration" takes on new significance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK
I read this book for a history class and loved it. The thesis was interesting, the ideas well-supported, and the examples fascinating. McNeill writes clearly, includes the perfect amount of detail and factual support, and avoids esotericism. His claims, like components of a mathematic or scientific theory, complement one another in a convincing and cohesive fashion such that by the end of the book, one cannot help but be at least partially convinced of the important relationship between paracitism and human civilization throughout history. Plagues and Peoples is truly legitimate, fascinating and innovative. For those who have any interest in history, anthropology, sociology, biology, or a plethora of other fields, as well as for any who merely appreciate interesting analytical thought and are looking for a good read, this book is really one you won't want to miss.

5-0 out of 5 stars pretty good of disease in society
Diseases has been a big factor in human development. Disease has helped dictate where people have been able to live and create civilizations, helped in the conquest of countries and created a whole series of social ills in congested urban areas. McNeill takes a look at the effects of disease through human society.

The first chapter Man The Hunter focuses on disease in early human history. The following chapter Breakthrough to History focuses on the development of agriculture and permanent human settlements. The next chapter, Confluence of Civilized Disease Pools focuses on the role disease had on early civilizations in places such as China and India. The next chapter is Impact of the Mogul Empire and how this early large empire had an effect on disease. The next chapter is Transoceanic Exchanges focusing on the spearding of disease between the Eastern and Western Hempshires and its implications. The last chapter is Ecological Impact of Medical Science Focusing on how humans have been able to control diseas through means such as vacinations.

Good book to get a better understanding of history.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very detailed explanation of disease's role in history
Every high school history student knows that the Black Death swept through Europe, and that diseases like smallbox, measles and so on were decisive in allowing the colonization of the Americas. But these two statements while universally accepted, are generally left at that and the causes go unexplored.

This book is a very concise history of plagues and what built up to these two grim realities. McNeill goes much beyond these basics and provides in intricate details the events that allowed that to happen. What allowed these disease pools to eventually come into being? This book provides the details to the answer to that question from the early days of civilization in Mesopotamia to the effect that plague had on the periphery of the Roman and Chinese empires to the effect that the Mongols had in fully unifying this disease pool, and once a reality, the devasating effect that they had on the world.

In short, if you want to understand in fine detail the causes and events that built up the "eastern hemisphere disease pool", read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
This is one of a very tiny number of books which I have bought in bulk and distributed to friends and colleagues. Although the prose style can be unnecessarily turgid and academic and will win no prizes, the ideas are so stimulating intellectually that one gradually ceases to notice the style. McNeill's central thesis, both original and plausible, allows one to review the entire history of civilization in a new light and to make testable and almost always correct predictions. Few books have the ability to so change one's view of history. I first read this book many years ago and it has held up well. Read and ponder. It may change your world view.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will change the way you look at the world
This is one of those handful of books that will change the way you look at our world. History will never seem quite the same when you finish.
Several earlier reviewers have done a great job of summarizing and analyzing the book. It is unfortunate that this book was given as a high school assignment, and then the students were asked to review it on Amazon. Is it any wonder they gave it 2 or 3 stars, and said it was difficult to understand? Most 15-year-olds do not have the background to fully appreciate this type of work, and unfortunately their reviews skew the book's rating. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent preclinical book
This book was intended to prepare medical students to understand the basic science principles that form the foundation of clinical genetics. It is not intended to be a clinical handbook. It does an excellent job showing how the clinical genetic diseases illustrate the scientific principles of genetics. I think that it is very well written, and forms a foundation to pursue more clinical studies.

4-0 out of 5 stars medical genetics
I think the book is fine, but there ought to be detailed explanations about various genetical disorders in human genes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Medical Genetics
This book is extremely limited in discussing how these genetic disorders manifest themselves clinically. I would not recommend this book for students who plan to apply their knowledge in the clinical setting. Explanations of certain genetic terms are not always clearly defined nor are certain biologic processes such as meiosis. Overall, a poorly written book for anyone but a graduate student of genetics. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Healing Advice
Cousins connects personal experience with scientific research to make a compelling case for the healing power of positive emotions. Norman Cousins was a journalist who was healed through changing his behavior and thoughts. As a followup to his experience he was brought to the UCLA Medical School to do further inquiry into the topic. He interviewed physicians, patients, and family members in his study.

He discusses how his findings were misinterpreted and made to appear shallow by critics. But he felt that he had a valid contribution to make to our understanding of ourselves.

Philosophically he makes some cogent points throughout this book. Personally I love what he writes about Southern California. Consider also his comments on life well lived:
"The clock provides only a technical measurement of how long we live. Far more real than the ticking of time is the way we open up the minutes and invest them with meaning. Death is not the ultimate tragedy in life."

Buy this book! Read it! You'll be thankful you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars humor is good medicine
This book shows how remarkable and awesome the human spirit truely is. Cousins gives examples of how humor affected the body in a profound healing manor. After facing cancer and the gloom around the therapies, Cousins turned to humor to help fight the battle and overcame many obstacles in his way. Even those whose lives are not touched by cancer in some way can appreciate the benefits of a little humor therapy. Great book! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book not for beginners, not for pros
Essentials of Human Diseases and Conditions looks and reads much like my college anatomy and physiology text with a good glossary and many colorful illustrations. It does not have pre- or post- tests, or chapter objectives or reviews. The book is easy on the eyes and easy to browse; not formatted as a crowded exhaustive reference.

The book is a well organized and indexed study of the most common human diseases (Cushings syndrome is represented, pheochromocytoma is not.) The text is arranged by the human body systems. The diseases of each system are presented first with discussion of symptoms and indications, then origin and cause, then methods of diagnosis, and finally treatment

The book's preface indicates it was written for "students of clinical medicine in the fields of medical assisting, medical transcription, insurance coding and other allied health programs who have had an introduction to basic anatomy and physiology of the human body and to medical terminology". I do agree there are prerequisites to the text; it is not a "home and family" reference. I am a degreed medical radiological technologist with some years of experience and wanted a quick reference to review the disease processes of some of the patients I do CTs on. The book is useful but not as complete as I would like. I will need to supplement it with an extensive, harder on the eyes and harder to browse reference. ... Read more

Book Description

A prize-winning medical journalist sets out to show that the HIV=AIDS=death hypothesis, which has wrongly acquired the force of certainty, has been riddled with flaws leading to distorted results, wrong conclusions and needless suffering. Shenton argues that research has been driven by the financial interests of pharmaceutical companies and by the ambitions of unscrupulous scientists equally anxious to protect their research funding, their patented HIV test kits, and ultimately their egos.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Most Thorough Debunking of the Virus/AIDS Hypothesis
Shenton's book is the best work I've read yet that questions the link between HIV (or ANY virus, for that matter)and AIDS. Anyone who reads this book will be utterly transfixed by it. It is both fascinating and frightening to read about the unanswered questions that continue to vex scientists, researchers and the like about the supposed link between HIV and AIDS. What is more frightening, however, is the extent to which these individuals will go to prevent these gaps in AIDS theory from becoming public knowledge, and how they refuse even to entertain any other possible explanation(s) for AIDS other than their precious "virus." Meanwhile, people continue dying.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gives intelligent reader the knowledge to choose sides
Shenton's telling of a decade of investigation is a complementary part of the AIDS puzzle in main started and mostly filled in by scientists Robert Root-Bernstein and Peter Duesberg; - and Shenton journalistic comrades such as Jad Adams and Michael Fumento. Deductive, objective analysis of all the medical "reporting" of the AIDS statistics have always led to the realization that "you can't get there from here" in trying to understand what the establishment (NIH, CDC, WHO, etc.) has almost successfully rammed down the throats of Americans, and in doing so has killed tens to hundreds of thousands of patients decades before their time. The immense value of Shenton's work is that it is a lifesaving read for those who want to make their own decisions when confronted by a blood test that comes back "positive" for HIV antibodies as one can then refuse to be a fatal victim of the toxic therapy that is currently in vogue, and in fact one can then proceed to take the proper steps to fully recovered health as pointed to by this book and the other authors cited above. ... Book Description

“The bard of biological weapons captures
the drama of the front lines.”

-Richard Danzig, former secretary of the navy

The first major bioterror event in the United States-the anthrax attacks in October 2001-was a clarion call for scientists who work with “hot” agents to find ways of protecting civilian populations against biological weapons. In The Demon in the Freezer, his first nonfiction book since The Hot Zone, a #1 New York Times bestseller, Richard Preston takes us into the heart of Usamriid, the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick, Maryland, once the headquarters of the U.S. biological weapons program and now the epicenter of national biodefense.

Peter Jahrling, the top scientist at Usamriid, a wry virologist who cut his teeth on Ebola, one of the world’s most lethal emerging viruses, has ORCON security clearance that gives him access to top secret information on bioweapons. His most urgent priority is to develop a drug that will take on smallpox-and win. Eradicated from the planet in 1979 in one of the great triumphs of modern science, the smallpox virus now resides, officially, in only two high-security freezers-at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta and in Siberia, at a Russian virology institute called Vector. But the demon in the freezer has been set loose. It is almost certain that illegal stocks are in the possession of hostile states, including Iraq and North Korea. Jahrling is haunted by the thought that biologists in secret labs are using genetic engineering to create a new superpox virus, a smallpox resistant to all vaccines.

Usamriid went into a state of Delta Alert on September 11 and activated its emergency response teams when the first anthrax letters were opened in New York and Washington, D.C. Preston reports, in unprecedented detail, on the government’s response to the attacks and takes us into the ongoing FBI investigation. His story is based on interviews with top-level FBI agents and with Dr. Steven Hatfill.

Jahrling is leading a team of scientists doing controversial experiments with live smallpox virus at CDC. Preston takes us into the lab where Jahrling is reawakening smallpox and explains, with cool and devastating precision, what may be at stake if his last bold experiment fails.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Good Outweighs the Bad
The Demon in the Freezer is an excellent book about the eradication of smallpox, and the history of Soviet biowarfare. The information is presented in the context of the October 2001 Anthrax attacks. There are definitely more comprehensive books on those subjects, but Preston's strength has always been his ability to blend the personal and scientific sides of an issue.

The only reason why I cannot give this book 5 stars is because, like The Hot Zone, Preston is alarmist and sensationalist at the end. I understand that creating a feeling of fear helps the lay reader through the material, but Preston's substitution of fear for analysis, especially at the end of the book, just slightly cheapen book as a whole.

Richard Preston is an excellent author and I highly recommend this book. It is a joy to read and it is a very good introduction to smallpox and biowarfare. However, don't feel like you need to go and get vaccinated and fitted for a gas mask.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frightening
Richard Preston has written a frightening book. Starting and ending with the Anthrax attacks on the United States. Preston has talked to many of the top bioweapons engineers in the world and his research shows in this outstanding book. Full of information from accross the world. The history of Smallpox, the eradication effort by the World Health Organization. The background on Anthrax. Side stories to Ebola. The most dangerous virus's in the world are addressed in this book.

The book examines the threat of Smallpox and explains why most people in the know about infectious disease's still consider it the worst the world has ever seen, even worse than plague. The book touches on Biopreparat (for a more in depth look read Biohazard by Ken Alibek) and the Russian stockpiles of Smallpox that they have weaponized and put into missiles to attack other countries. The CDC, Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in Atlanta still holds over 450 different strains of Smallpox.

The book goes on to explain how many countries have Smallpox and this is not a little known fact. How genetic engineering could easily make Smallpox harder to contain than it already is. In today's world travel a Smallpox outbreak would mean hundreds of thousands of deaths and it would shut down international trade. it would bring the world to its knees. With 25 million people living within a couple hours travel of one another an outbreak in a third world county could show up in the United States in a few days. And this is not taking into account the possibility of a direct bioweapons attack on the United States. Before it was diagnosed, it would be spread around the world by air travel.

This book is well written, reads easily, is full of information and very thought provoking. It was so engrossing that I started ready one night and did not want to put it down. I finished it the next afternoon. For a better understanding of what the world is facing today you should read this book. Smallpox is just as dangerous, if not more dangerous, than a nuclear war. Nuclear devastation is confined to the area of the bomb. Smallpox would travel person to person throughout the world. In a word, the information in this book is, frightening.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Demon⿦
This is the sort of book that you just cannot put down. I started reading it on a long car ride home from Portland and was hooked immediately.

After telling a co-worker that I had enjoyed Preston's “THE HOT ZONE” she recommended this book as a follow-up. While I did enjoy it, I found the chapters about Anthrax boring in comparisson to the terror of smallpox and the fascinating story of its eradication.

“THE HOT ZONE” and Laurie Garrett's “THE COMING PLAGUE” (which I am currently in the middle of) are better, but this is an enjoyable read that is full of facts ot keep biology/pathology buffs hooked but not bogged down with technical jargon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smallpox non-fiction thriller!
A fascinating treatise on smallpox, including its history and recent emergence as the virus of choice for bioterrorists.

Smallpox came into existance only as human population densities swelled. In the late 18th century, Edward Jenner made history by performing the first successful smallpox vaccination. In the centuries that followed, humanity waged war against smallpox, and it was ostensibly eradicated from nature in the late seventies. It seems that mankind was too enamored with smallpox to destroy it completely, however, and it lives on in freezers around the world.

"The Hot Zone", by the same author, made me paranoid about the ebola virus. Having finished this book, I know now that ebola is child's play compared to smallpox.

"Demon" is full of loads of details about the biomedical industry, including a survey of modern practices, tools, techniques, and prominent players. The book is all the more terrifying given its non-fiction status.

A must read for anybody interested in infectious diseases, smallpox, or bioweapons programs.

4-0 out of 5 stars A slight down-grade, but nonetheless incredible
The Demon in the Freezer is the third of Richard Preston's "Black Biology" books. It was his second non-fiction story involving bioterrorism and viruses. Although I have to admit that the Hot Zone was indeed a better book, I applaud Preston for his tremendous effort in writing The Demon in the Freezer. The book has a profusion of information regarding poxviruses and various sub-strains of this sub-microscopic killer. The book effectively intertwined biology, ethics, history, and war. The Demon in the Freezer, in a nutshell, is an interesting piece of work that should be read by all those who are uneducated in the field of global politics regarding bio-warfare. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential resource for the public health student
As a student in a combined MD/MPH degree program, the New Public Health is exactly the kind of book I have been looking for. Drs. Tulchinsky and Varavikova have assembled a text that touches on all aspects of public health, from populations at risk to how we pay for health care.

The international perspective of their work comes through in discussions of health problems and the struggle for solutions in Russia and Israel. It offers unique insight as well as a fresh and challenging perspective for those who are concerned about the state of the health care delivery system in the US today and in the future.

The New Public Health is an essentilal addtion to the collection of any public health student, both as an outstanding quick reference for a specific topic and as a textbook to read cover to cover. Well written, easy to read and understand, it satisfies the need for a comprehensive and up-to-date review of the state of public health worldwide.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE ALL-COMPREHENSIVE NEW PUBLIC HEALTH
Tulchinsky's and Varavikova's "New Public Health" provides an all-encompassing overview of the major health problems in society. While a book of this size cannot go into depth into every disease/risk factor, it provides the reader with not only the inditial references to carry out an in-depth search, but also with succint basic arguments that take account the clinical, epidemiological, economic, planning and administative aspects of public health issues. By having the same two authors for the 16 chapters, the book is able to acheive an integration and cohesion of themes that would be lost if more authors were involved (as is usually the case for a book of this size). The 45 pages on my specialist area "health economics", whilst obviously not acheiving the depth or covering the ground of a 250 page textbook, manages to convey the crux of most of the major concepts and issues to the "non-specialist" reader. Overall, the book is clearly written and is amply illustated with tables and sidebars that act to clarify concepts. While not sacrificing scientific rigor, the book is a tremendous guide as to how to practically manage and improve the health systems and hence the health of a developed/developing nation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading
The New Public Health: An Introduction for the 21st Century by Theodore H Tulchinsky and Elena A Varavikova combines research, scholarship and experience into a delightfully readable book. It dissects complex issues into understandable concepts, making it a valuable tool for students, teachers and public health practioners. It's comprehensive coverage of the various burning public health issues, should make it required reading for all those intrested in field.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for MPH students and Public Health practitioners
My first contact with a draft copy of "The New Public Health" by Tulchinsky & Varavikova occurred when I was a young MPH student. Now, as an epidemiologist (still young!), I appreciate it as the most comprehensive and up-to-date critical review of the main topics that any Public Health practicioner should be familiar with, from a scholar comparison of health systems in various settings, through the many "classical" aspects of public health practice, including maternal and child health, nutrition, environmental issues and infectious diseases.

In addition to Public Health specialists, students and practitioners of all health disciplines will also benefit from "The New Public Health", by acquiring the foundations of what the relationship between the individual and the population's health represents.

The book is an invitation to Public Health ACTION, through the judicious analysis of historic trends in health and health management, and current epidemiological facts. ... Read more

Book Description

Computational and Evolutionary Analysis of HIV Molecular Sequences is for all researchers interested in HIV research, even those who only have a nodding acquaintance with computational biology (or those who are familiar with some, but not all, aspects of the field). HIV research is unusual in that it brings together scientists from a wide range of disciplines: clinicians, pathologists, immunologists, epidemiologists, virologists, computational biologists, structural biologists, evolutionary biologists, statisticians and mathematicians. This book seeks to bridge the gap between these groups, in both subject matter and terminology. Focused largely on HIV genetic variation, Computational and Evolutionary Analysis of HIV Molecular Sequences covers such issues as sampling and processing sequences, population genetics, phylogenetics and drug targets. ...
