Book Description

"In our ever more crowded and interconnected world, a vast menagerie of microorganisms travels incessantly from animals to humans, as well as from one human to another. During this movement, the microbes can mutate, and this makes animals an important reservoir for generating human disease. Beasts of the Earth provides an engaging tour through history that demonstrates how the microbes that emerge can change our lives: from their effect on the fall of the Roman Empire to the latest SARS outbreak."—Bruce Alberts, president, National Academy of Sciences

"This important book provides a novel perspective on the current and future status of human disease. Highly recommended."—Joanne P. Webster, Ph.D., reader in parasite epidemiology, Imperial College Faculty of Medicine, London

"This book brings a very important subject to our attention—the never-ending emergence of new human diseases . . . in every instance defying our predictions, in every instance reminding us of the complexity of our world, in every instance challenging our capacity to prevent and control the threat."—Frederick A. Murphy, D.V.M., Ph.D., distinguished professor, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis

"This book is a wonderful combination of very readable scientific and historical underpinnings of past and present epidemics of the spread of diseases from animals to people."—Sidney M. Wolfe, M.D., director, Public Citizen’s Health Research Group, Washington, D.C.

Humans have lived in close proximity to other animals for thousands of years. Recent scientific studies have even shown that the presence of animals has a positive effect on our physical and mental health. People with pets typically have lower blood pressure, show fewer symptoms of depression, and tend to get more exercise.

But there is a darker side to the relationship between animals and humans. Animals are carriers of harmful infectious agents and the source of a myriad of human diseases. In recent years, the emergence of high-profile illnesses such as AIDS, SARS, West Nile virus, and bird flu has drawn much public attention, but as E. Fuller Torrey and Robert H. Yolken reveal, the transfer of deadly microbes from animals to humans is neither a new nor an easily avoided problem.

Beginning with the domestication of farm animals nearly 10,000 years ago, Beasts of the Earth traces the ways that human-animal contact has evolved over time. Today, shared living quarters, overlapping ecosystems, and experimental surgical practices where organs or tissues are transplanted from non-humans into humans continue to open new avenues for the transmission of infectious agents. Other changes in human behavior like increased air travel, automated food processing, and threats of bioterrorism are increasing the contagion factor by transporting microbes further distances and to larger populations in virtually no time at all.

While the authors urge that a better understanding of past diseases may help us lessen the severity of some illnesses, they also warn that, given our increasingly crowded planet, it is not a question of if but when and how often animal-transmitted diseases will pose serious challenges to human health in the future. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The benefits of reading Cure Your Cancer
After stumbling across Bill Henderson's book, I immediately endeavoured to be my own guinea pig and try out his products. For several years, I was experiencing hormonal instability and, as a result, was chronically ill and suffered from facial blemishes.

After taking Hydroxygen Plus, Mega Minerals and Coral Calcium as well as Modifilan, I noticed an immediate change to my skin, my eyes and my general health. My GP advised me to get off these products but I dismissed her advise as conventional medicine proved to be useless to me for so long. It is now very cold in Melbourne, and everyone I know is suffering from the cold or flu or is feeling run-down. In the past, I would be the first to be sick, but I have not been ill at all.

People always comment on how good my skin looks and how healthy I look in general. I am so impressed with these products and recommend them to everyone. People are still reluctant to try them out as they listen to their doctors who warn them that they do not work. My only ammunition though is that I am the perfect example of recovery.

Well done Bill Henderson! I only wish that we had Oxygen Therapy in Australia and that the products were sold here. Nobody knows about these products but I am hoping to make a change.

Many Regards

Vicky

5-0 out of 5 stars Cure your cancer
I highly recommend this book. It contains very valuable information. My daughter was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer) when she was 12 years old. She went through chemo treatments, the cancer mestasized to her lungs two years later. At this time I desperately searched the web for answers and found Bill Henderson and read the book. I got my daughter started on MGN-3 an immune system booster, this was a breakthrough for us. My daughter is now 16 years old and is cancer free!!! Thanks to alot of prayers and this book. Thank you Bill and God Bless you!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cutting Edge!!!
OK, sorry for the pun, but it's true. Bill Henderson has found a way to provide the best researched PROVEN treatments and CURES for cancers of all shapes and sizes in an easy to read and understand format. While waiting for my doctors to schedule, execute and analyse a biopsy of my neck (prior tests have made them suspect some kind of lymphoma), I started doing some research of my own and stumbled across Bill's fabulous book. I immediately started upping my dosages of some of the supplements I was already taking, and added some others recommended by several of the doctors and scientists mentioned in the book. I also modified my diet somewhat. Within 3 days of starting, the seering and throbbing pain I was experiencing DISAPPEARED! The mass in my neck, what ever it is (still haven't got the results back from the biopsy) softened and shrunk by 20-30%. Within a week, I can now see the shape of my face again (mass now smaller by over 50%!!), and I feel like I am winning my fight already! I am still fine-tuning my protocol based on many of the recommendations in Bill's book, have several supplements on order through discount nutrient providers (all found in the book), and have been constantly reading new material through many of the links provided within the book. It may only seem like 200 pages or so, but with the links to other invaluable sites as well as the newsletter archives on Bill's website, you too can become an "expert" on cancer and alternative treatments in a very short time. And you can keep learning new proven techniques because Bill is contstantly researching and updating his site with the latest and greatest. This book could literally save your life or the life of someone you love. Even if no one you know has cancer, you can learn how to insure that you and your family never get it by reading this book and learning EXACTLY what causes cancer (turns out it's pretty simple!) and how you can make yourself virtually cancer-proof. I only wish I knew this information 3 years ago when my Dad was battling leukemia. Chemo did not save him. Read this book. You won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE BOOK FOR ANYONE DEALING WITH CANCER!!!
I must say that Bill has really done his research and has written a book that is a definite wealth of information for the cancer patient and family. This information will not be shared by your run of the mill oncologist! Bill's book will direct you to some of the finest websites that offer alternatives to cure your cancer. Also you will be able to locate Dr's who are willing to work with you when you choose not to go with the cut, burn and poison treatments if you have cancer. The book tells you about lifestyle changes, being healthy eating, exercise and what supplements to take to help cure your cancer. If you are looking for this kind of information and feel lost out there in cyberspace, then you need this VERY helpful guide book of Bills! Thank you Bill for helping so many people! Lynn Miller P.S. Bill also made this book very easy to understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Easy Read of Fantastic Information
Bill Henderson's book is a solid, comprehensive work of information for curing your cancer. It should give real hope, not false hope, to anyone diagnosed with cancer who doesn't know which way to turn for help, or whom to believe, trust or rely on. It is objective, exhaustively researched, and presented in a format that is not only reader friendly but imbues a feeling of confidence and optimism.

Book Description

“This book is a testament to the extraordinary depth, powers, and resiliency of children’s spirits.” —Marion Wright Edelman, president, Children’s Defense Fund

If I Get to Five is a one-of-a-kind book by a one-of-a-kind human being. The medical world knows him as Fred Epstein, M.D., the neurosurgeon who pioneered life-saving procedures for previously inoperable tumors in children. His patients and their families know him simply as Dr. Fred, the “miracle man” who has extended them both a healing hand and an open heart.

Throughout his career Epstein’s young patients have been his most important teachers and trusted guides. They are children who—often by sheer force of will—have refused to relinquish life and all its gifts. In this inspiring book, these children teach us the lessons we all need to learn in order to live life to the fullest—lessons about seizing the moment and facing our deepest fears, about embracing the joy and wonder of everyday life. Most of all, they teach lessons about uncommon courage—the courage to do what’s hardest, to believe in what we don’t understand, to love without boundaries.

If I Get to Five takes us inside a world unlike any other, from the high-stakes, high-tech operating room where life and death are separated by a heartbeat to the sickrooms and recovery rooms where parents discover the limits and power of their faith. But most compelling of all is the journey inside the hearts, minds, and souls of the wisest children you will ever encounter.

No one who reads this remarkable book will ever look at children—or adversity—in the same way.

Book Description

According to conventional wisdom, our genes and lifestyles are the most important causes of the most deadly ailments of our time.Conventional wisdom may be wrong. In this controversial book, the eminent biologist Paul W. Ewald offers some startling arguments:

-Germs appear to be at the root of heart disease, Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, many forms of cancer, and other chronic diseases.
-The greatest threats to our health come not from sensational killers such as Ebola, West Nile virus, and super-virulent strains of influenza, but from agents that are already here causing long-term infections, which eventually lead to debilitation and death.
-The medical establishment has largely ignored the evidence that implicates these germs, to the detriment of our public health.
-New evolutionary theories are available, which explain how germs function and offer opportunities for controlling these modern plagues — if we are willing to listen to them.

Plague Time is an eye-opening exploration of the revolutionary new understanding of disease that may set the course of medical research for the twenty-first century.

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting subject, boring book.
The book is interesting but weaves the theory of evolution into nearly every page. Too preachy on the subject of evolution, genes, etc. Highly sophisticated language, complex scientific jargon used a little too often. Not recommended for the average "unscientifically-trained" reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars why settle for a century?
The dramatic message of this book is that chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and arthritis, are not necessarily caused by an inherent and inevitable breakdown of the human body, but by the action of infectious agents and by the immune response to those agents. Sooner or later, some bug finds its way through your defenses and settles in. Sometimes you know right away (small pox) BUT sometimes it takes years (AIDS, Lyme) sometimes it takes decades (shingles). This is not a new-agey wishful thinking assessment of risks, but a scientific analysis of disease and its causes, based on experimental data. The companion volume "The Evolution of Infectious Disease" covers much of the same ground but gives much detail to satisfy the sceptics.

I'm a scientist (but not a biologist) and I would bet this is one of the 20 century books that will still be a recommended book a century from now. Ewald's theory is still fighting for recognition, but there are so many factors that are "right" about it that it has to prevail (like evolution.) The big questions are about how effectively we can fight quietly acting micro-organisms whose effects don't show up for years or decades.

3-0 out of 5 stars A little too scientific for the average reader
I found the theories to be very interesting, but found the author tended to repeat himself. I also felt the wording was a little too "scientific" for the average reader. With that said; I still may look read more of his books.

4-0 out of 5 stars How Stealth Infections cause cancers, heart disease, etc.
"Plague Time (2000)" and Ewald's earlier "Evolution of Infectious Disease (1994)" advocate a new discipline called 'evolutionary epidemiology.'

One of the big shockers in both books is that: "Application of evolutionary principles does not lead to the conclusion that all parasites [including viruses and bacteria] evolve toward benignness."

Only under circumstances where new hosts are relatively hard to infect (due to a clean water supply or screened windows or condoms) are parasites forced to co-exist in a relatively benign state with their current victims. In both books, Ewald uses cholera as an example of a germ that has evolved to benignness in countries with clean water supplies, but is still a killer in countries with bad plumbing.

"Plague Time" takes this thesis a step further and concludes that many so-called chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis and certain cancers are also caused--or at least triggered by infection.

Peptic ulcers are a case in point. Even though some doctors back in the 1940s realized that antibiotics could heal ulcers, the technique never caught on in mainstream medicine. It was too easy to blame the patient's life-style and stress levels, and besides 'Helicobacter pylori' was hard to find. Four decades later, researchers in Perth, Australia discovered that patients with ulcers and gastritis improved after tetracycline. One of the researchers, Barry Marshall drank an infective dose of 'H. Pylori,' got gastritis, then cured himself with antibiotics. "Still, it was only in the mid-1990s that the medical establishment finally generally accepted the idea that peptic and duodenal ulcers are infectious diseases."

So what will the decisive medical technologies of the future be, if it is indeed accepted that many chronic illnesses are caused by infection? The author believes that, "Vaccines, antimicrobials, and hygienic improvements may control most heart disease, infertility, mental illnesses, and cancers, especially if these solutions are used not just to decimate pathogens but also to direct the evolution of the causative microbes."

"Plague Time" is a fascinating look at what may be the near-future of medicine if physicians can be trained to look at infectious diseases in terms of evolutionary epidemiology. ... Read more

Book Description

It is estimated that one out of five persons in the United States experiences at least one episode of hives in their lifetime. That is approximately sixty million people in the U.S., almost twice the population of California. Even if the actual number is over-estimated by fifty percent because of inaccurate diagnosis, thirty million remains an impressive number. Approximately five to ten percent of these patients may experience symptoms from six weeks up to two years or longer. This suggests that 1.5 to 3 million individuals in the U.S experience chronic hives.

There is a paucity of materials to assist health care professionals (HCP) and patients on these conditions. There is in fact no existing publication, past or present, that provides the practical approach discussed in this book for the evaluation and treatment of these conditions. The book will appeal to patients who are desirous of a self-help approach and to HCPs who need time-saving guidance to organize and standardize the evaluation of these conditions.

Many of the common questions that are asked by patients are answered in this book. It is our experience that addressing the following questions allays anxiety that patients experience and will improve their understanding as to why their symptoms are sometimes not diagnosed or brought under control.
•What are urticaria and angioedema?
•Why is it difficult to find the cause of urticaria and/or angioedema?
•Is there a common mechanism that causes urticaria and/or angioedema?
•Why do urticaria and/or angioedema remain only for a short time in some individuals, while other patients experience symptoms for longer periods, sometimes months or years?
•Can the duration of symptoms be predicted for chronic urticaria and/or angioedema?
•Why aren’t antihistamines completely effective in treating urticaria and/or angioedema?
•How can you determine whether a food, food additives, dyes, preservatives, or undetected allergens are causing urticaria and/or angioedema?
•Do psychological factors play a role in causing urticaria and/or angioedema?

This book is very different than existing medical textbooks as it distills the information from a variety of scientific sources to a level that is understandable for patients and for health care professionals, who may not be familiar with these complex conditions.

This book provides time saving tools to gather information efficiently from patients. Key sections may be reproduced for use with multiple patients. The book organizes and standardizes the evaluation and treatment process and encourages a cooperative approach between HCPs and patients that improves outcomes. It can be used by:

•Health care professionals (HCPs) who can advise their patients to complete a workbook section. Based upon the workbook information, the HCPs can utilize a numeric algorithm to guide them to discussion(s) of possible diagnostic possibilities, laboratory test considerations and treatment recommendations. •Patients, who believe they have hives or swelling, can complete the workbook section. This is shared with the health care professional, who can use the information to consider diagnostic possibilities, laboratory considerations and treatment recommendations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Chronic Urticaria sufferers
This is a terrific book that answers many questions for chronic urticaria sufferers. I wish I had found it sooner. I'm only on my first year of CU, but I really like to use this book as a reference for all the information scattered over the Internet. I brought it to show my allergist/immunologist and he had ordered it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Hives
I have been battling hives for several months. Dr. Wanderer was the third Dr. I encountered in an attempt to rid myself of this problem. On my first visit with Dr. Wanderer, he recommended a thorough series of testing to try and determine the cause of my outbreak of hives. During our interview time, it was apparent to Dr. Wanderer that I was in need of information on my illness. He suggested I read a book that he had written on the diagnosis and treatment of hives. I would encourage anyone who might have a bout with hives to get this book! It has helped me immensely with the understanding of the illness and more importantly, the diagnosis and treatments. I am still in treatment but I'm doing better and I've stayed the course of treatment ONLY because I have the book to go to for guidance and understanding. I'm hopeful of a positive outcome for my illness now because I have this book for reference. I would not have progressed to this point of recovery if not for the book Dr. Wanderer has published for us! It has given me strength daily!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hives: The Road to Diagnosis and Treatment of Urticaria
I have recently developed problems with swelling, particularly in my face, together with hives, but after a visit to see Dr. Alan Wanderer for some guidance, I purchased his book for basic information and direction. It was very helpful to learn some of the causes/reasons for swelling and hives (book has pictures of both). It helped me know I am not alone with this malady and not to feel so overwhelmed by it. I sincerely recommend Dr. Wanderer's book to anyone who experiences problems with swelling and/or hives, as it will help give you some basis in discovering sources and finding possible solutions to the problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very welcome book
Speaking as a sufferer of chronic urticaria for ten years, I cannot recommend this book too highly for anyone with chronic hives, and their carers/family/doctors. While most doctors are familiar with acute hives, chronic hives are more difficult to diagnose and treat. Sufferers often go from doctor to doctor seeking answers, or try endless expensive "alternative" treatments to no avail. It is a miserable and frustrating condition, and for some, it can be life-threatening. The book has a unique workbook section for the sufferer to complete and take to their doctor, which I feel is a valuable and useful idea, and the book itself is full of factual information about urticaria. Every doctor should have it on their bookshelf, as far as I'm concerned. This book is very welcome and there are no others like it, to my knowledge. Highly recommended. ... Read more

Book Description

A new edition of the bestselling book for fibromyalgia sufferers-with information on the latest medications and alternative and complementary therapies
Fibromyalgia, with its constant severe muscle pain, relentless fatigue, disturbed sleep, and feelings of depression, is regularly misdiagnosed and misunderstood, yet it is the most common arthritis-related disease next to osteoarthritis. While some feel these symptoms are part of growing older, fibromyalgia is not a sign of aging.

In this newly revised edition of his popular handbook, Dr. Harris H. McIlwain offers hope to millions of sufferers. His proven seven-step treatment program includes the very latest in such medications as Cox-2 Inhibitors, the breakthrough drugs that reduce pain and inflammation without stomach upset, and guaifenesin, a common ingredient in cough and cold medications that may lessen the symptoms of fibromyalgia. The program also has specific exercises to reduce deep muscle pain, to increase strength and energy, and to alleviate stress and anxiety. McIlwain tells what alternative approaches are safe to supplement his own treatment program, and offers an expanded discussion of complementary therapies that may be of benefit, such as homeopathy, chiropractic, aromatherapy, nutritional therapy, and herbal therapy. With McIlwain's program, fibromyalgia sufferers can manage the symptoms of the disease, reverse its progression in most cases, and improve the quality of their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really helped east my fibromyalgia symptoms
Superb read!! The book is an excellent resource for men and women with fibromyalgia syndrome and FINALLY, this doctor takes it seriously. Not only does the book evaluate the best medications for FMS, but it gives complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies that can ease pain and fatigue without the debilitating side effects of pain meds. I was doubtful at first--as to whether one more book could answer my questions--and ease my symptoms. But once I began the 7-step program--which is basically a lifestyle program--my symptoms subsided greatly. I've read four other books on FMS--this book far surpasses the others and gives new hope to sufferers. The suggestions for alleviating fibro-fog were incredible!! And--I esp. liked the ways to de-stress BEFORE symptoms became unbearable (as my FMS symptoms often coincide with chronic stress).
Buy this book!! If you know of someone with FMS, buy it for them. It's truly a gift of love and hope.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend to anyone who has deep muscle pain/fatigue
An excellent book on the mysterious fibromyalgia syndrome. Unless you've felt the deep muscle pain and unending fatigue, you have no idea how FMS can rob you of life. This book addresses the symptoms you might feel, possible causes (there are no "proven" causes), medical tests that can help your doctor narrow down the diagnosis (there are no medical tests to determine FMS), and a 7-step program to get relief. The program consists of a combination of therapies including complementary and alternative medical (CAM) therapies, medications, stress management, exercise, ways to increase healing sleep and more.

Having FMS for seven years, I'm always skeptical of the latest health books, but The Fibromyalgia Handbook is scientifically substantiated and extremely practical and rational--the program is something you can implement in your daily life without adding to your stress load.

Buy the book. Give it to a friend with FMS. It is a superb read that can increase relief of pain, fatigue, anxiety and other annoying symptoms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very detailed and presents surprising new findings
If you have fibromyalgia, this book can change your life, as it did mine. The breakthrough medical information was highly interesting. The authors also presented surprising new findings on which foods and exercise programs actually decrease pain and inflammation--and which ones increase pain. The natural therapies presented by Dr. McIlwain were also revealing with 5-HTP and SAM-e having been found to resolve pain and depression and help aid in getting sound sleep.

It was very helpful to me to hear I was not alone with these vague but high intrusive symptoms of FMS. I recommend this book to anyone with this syndrome.

5-0 out of 5 stars My wife said THANK YOU for this book
I bought this book for my wife who has had FMS for 4 years. I wanted her to get relief and it seemed like no medication was working. She used to be so active but the past few years have been hard on all of us as she tires easily and has constant muscle pain. The book helped my wife!!! Not only did she learn about the various causes of FMS, she found relief with the exercises and lifestyle approach to treatment. My wife even made an appointment with the author (MCILWAIN) and saw him last month in his Tampa Florida office. He confirmed the diagnosis and helped her understand the program even better. She now is taking only one medication and does the exercises daily. She is managing her time better and not over extending herself. These are simple steps to take to get your life back--and they work. I recommend. WE RECOMMEND!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource to END PAIN
This book is the best of all I've read on fibromyalgia. There is no hype--no false promises. The authors lay out a very doable lifestyle program, including medications, that help you get back in control of pain, stiffness, anxiety, sleep problems, and more. I recommend this book to anyone with FMS--and hope it gives you back your active life as it did with me!! CSilverfield ... Read more
