Following a clear and helpful general format, this updated volume is designed to help college students who are medical school applicants, and required to write a medical school admissions essay. Students will find extensive advice on the do’s and don’ts for writing a successful essay plus instruction on the process of organizing ideas, writing a rough draft, then re-writing a final finished essay for presentation. Detailed advice is followed by 75 model essays, many of them new in this edition, all of them submitted by medical school students whose applications were accepted. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just write a thoughtful and sincere essay!
The best lesson from this book is actually the step-by-step process described in the beginning. The essays are just there for you to get an idea of how unique you can get. By following their process and getting the most of what I have learned from my own life experiences, I ended up with a great essay - something that I am proud of submitting. How did I do it? Just read and completed all of their practical exercises. Otherwise, some of the essays are inspiring and they give you some ideas that may be relevant to your application. Don't listen to the post about this book being all for Ivies. I came from a state school and I still ended up interviewing at the very top schools. What gets past the admissions is your true character and sincere expression of why you want to be a doctor.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting essays with some useful pointers
I found this book not as useful as it claims to be. The essays feature here are usually too unique to be used as "model essays". Most of these candiates are best of the best students with tons of great experiences or personal accounts. I still enjoy reading through many of these essays and the pointers the book provides. However DO NOT expect to use these essays as model for your personal statements. This is not what this book is for.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay but there are better books out there
This book was great when it initially came out. However, nowadays, you need some new stuff in order to make it in. Considering the fact that a zillion people bought this book and wrote based on it, admissions are on to it. I suggest From High School to Med school by Raju and Yanofski for some fresh essays. It's written for accelerated medical programs, but they have some good essays in there.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for PreMeds
After applying to medical school once and not getting in, I started looking for a different approach to my second application. This book really turned my essay around. The book takes you through all the steps to put together a good essay that will catch the admission committee's attention. The example essays I found helpful also. Your essay will be what you put into it, but this book will help a lot if you will put the work into it. I would definately recommend it as a must have for anyone applying to medical school. It must have worked, because I will be starting medical school in the fall.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written and effective
This is a good book that covers one of the more important and often neglected areas of medical school admissions. Kaufman does a good job of giving readers examples of how to write essays that admissions committee members will find both interesting and honest. However, I would recommend Dr. Goliszek's "Complete Medical School Preparation and Admissions Guide" for an overall guide to getting into medical school. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AWESOME! A must-have for surviving Neuro!
If you're a medical student taking Neuro, get this book ASAP! At first, I thought it wouldn't be useful because it is so lengthy (400+ pages) compared to the other books in the series. However, it turned out to be an absolute lifesaver while I was taking the course. The neuroanatomy course at my school was very unorganized and poorly taught and our required textbook was way too verbose to be helpful. This book is very well organized and very thorough for a review book- you really don't even need a textbook, just a neuroanatomy atlas. Rather than getting bogged down in trivial minutiae, this book presents all the basics you need to know to pass neuro. It also has hundreds of review questions to test your knowledge as you go. I couldn't possibly have organized my study of neuroanatomy without this book- and thanks to Dr. Fix, I actually managed an A in Neuro!
The only disadvantage is that, due to its length, it's probably overkill for board review. I'd suggest purchasing High Yield Neuroanatomy by the same author for a quick-and-dirty review before the boards, then testing yourself via the questions in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Taking the USMLE? GET IT!
Better than his lectures, you get the answers to many of the boards neuro questions. A quick, yet jam-packed review. Pay attention to the diagrams...they pay off in points on the USMLE. ... Read more

Book Description

Sure to become the backbone of a diverse range of academic programs in the health professions! Epidemiology as a discipline has evolved over the years from a relatively obscure field in public health and preventive medicine to one that has gained increased prominence in all the health sciences, including health education, health administration, environmental health, allied health, and nursing. This comprehensive, user friendly, and academically sound textbook covers the basic principles and methods of epidemiology in such a way that will appeal to a broad range of undergraduate and graduate students in the health professions. Beyond its clear, concise writing, Essential Epidemiology offers unique pedagogic aids, such as an algorithm to help students identify epidemiologic study designs, a discussion of problems students typically encounter in calculating and interpreting incidence rates, and annotated step-by-step solutions to numerical problems. In addition, the text introduces topics sometimes ignored in other texts, such as hybrid studies, the controversy surrounding the use of hypothesis testing versus confidence intervals, and the differences between rate and risk measurements. Helpful features contained in each chapter include: 1) highlighted learning objectives and a brief overview; 2) study questions and practical exercises; 3) bulleted summary to stress key points; 4) list of key terms, all boldfaced within text; 5) useful tables and figures to clarify important material; 6) boxed exhibits with engaging supplementary information; 7) sample problems with step-by-step solutions to illustrate essential calculations; and 8) easily remembered mathematical symbols to aid memorization of formulas. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and practical overview of epidemiology
This is an excellent epidemiology book. It gives a good overview of epidemiology and has a practical slant to it. The things I like about it:
* It's easy to read and understand. It has a non-academic style of writing that's easy to follow.
* It not only explains what the different epidemiological parameters are, but teaches the reader how to calculate them. Case studies are then given demonstrating the calculations with finer points highlighted and explained.
* The organisation of topics in the book is logical and clear. Much better than previous epidemiology texts I've read. ... Read more

This was the only book I used in during my clinical rotation in Psych. Fadem's High Yield Psych is also great. (But having read it for Step 1, I didn't need to read it again.) 3-0 out of 5 stars Dry, riddled with typos, endless lists
I did pass the boards (first time taker) but did not find this book helpful. It was full of errors. It was also very dry and did not suit my style of learning at all. This book is not horrible and I'm sure is useful for many people but it was painful to get through (even more painful than studying for the boards has to be).I used Laughing your way to passing the pediatric boards and absolutely loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have - Comprehensive Yet Concise
I am a Chief Resident in Pediatrics and personally used this book to prepare for my board exam. Those that are looking for high-yield subject reviews will be thrilled by this excellent guide. The book is written mostly by fellows, who are: (1) actively studying the material about which they contribute, and (2) recent veterans of the examination process. They are also busy people who realize that real-world board preparation requires a well organized interface which is, among other things, cheap and easy to carry around. Chapters are specialty-specific and data are organized in clear, bulleted summaries with many tables & charts, all of which incorporate the key associations that the ABP insists you know. There are few figures & no clinical photographs; but that's what Zitelli's is for. Supplement your PREP self-assessment questions with this user-friendly review, and you're good to go. Highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for 3rd year Psychiatry clerkship
This book is a quick and easy read covering all the essential topics you will encounter during a third year medical school psychiatry clerkship. I carried this book with me under the notes on my clipboard as it contains the DSM IV criteria for psych illnesses as well as brief additional clinical/educational pearls. This is a perfect book for those who like to know the essentials in an easy to read format. I would emphasize that it is an easy read and high yield for both exams and clinical encounters. 1-0 out of 5 stars Errors - Editing is poor
I took the Step 2 exam last year and there were several errors. The publisher knew of these errors in the 3rd edition, but did nothing to correct them. Do not buy this book because some of the questions they asked in this book were on the exam. I was fortunate because someone told me about this about 2 weeks before the exam. If you check other surgery sources you should be fine.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too many errors
As the other reviewer said, this book has too many errors. I reviewed the 4th edition and they are still there. In addition to factual errors, there is simply sloppy editing. I would look elsewhere for review for the shelf and step 2 until they put some additional effort into this book

2-0 out of 5 stars I hope the errors have been corrected...
I do not recommend the third edition of this book. I have not read the 4th edition yet, but the 3rd edition is chock-full of grammatical, spelling, and even FACTUAL errors that make the book less uesful than others I have found. I would advise anyone to purchase the 4th edition with caution.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent review of subject for the beginners

Book Description

Picture a childhood void of the joyful images and sensations we associate with play--a childhood lacking in curiosity, diversity and symbolic meaning--a childhood without playmates or friends.Children on the autism spectrum are among those who face serious challenges learning how to play in both social and imaginative ways.

But no longer do these children have to remain lost souls on the fringes of playgrounds and other social gathering places. In Peer Play and the Autism Spectrum: The Art of Guiding Children's Socialization and Imagination, Pamela Wolfberg turns her award-winning research into a practical manual for practitioners and caregivers seeking to address the unique and complex challenges children on the autism spectrum experience.

This practical guide offers an introduction to the basic principles, tools and techniques that comprise the Integrated Play Groups model, designed to support children of diverse ages and abilities on the autism spectrum (novice players) in mutual play experiences with typical peers and siblings (expert players). Small groups of children regularly play together under the guidance of an adult facilitator (play guide) through a carefully tailored system of support. The emphasis is on maximizing children's developmental potential as well as intrinsic desire to play, socialize and form meaningful relationships with peers. At the same time, an equally important focus is on teaching the peer group to be more accepting, responsive and inclusive of children who relate and play in different ways. This innovative book is full of forms, checklists and other tools to facilitate implementation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A little book that stands by itself
This is a little book I've been using since day one at work, and let me say it is simply the most practical reference I had ever bought. It has a very concise overview of the principles underlying any diagnosis, an overview of some critical values, a pathologist incline clasification in the book (more disease oriented), and a super complete list of causes that may provoque the anomalies detected and outlined in this book. All in a minute consultation, really fast and easy to use. Simply very, very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interpretation of Diagnostic Tests
I, too, have been using this reference for several years. I consider it to be one of the five most useful medical books on my shelf. This is probably the only book I feel the need to purchase every time there is an updated edition. I strongly recommend it for medical students, residents, midlevel providers and practicing physicians. It is a core reference in medical board review. It may also be of value for nursing staff in the hospital or clinic setting, especially for critical care nurses, or for anyone who is motivated to learn about medical diagnosis. The book is less likely to be useful to patients and their families, due to its highly technical nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interpretation of Diagnostic Tests
An indispensable guide. Thorough and complete. Very helpful both in determining what tests to order, and how to interpret test results; especially helpful for the less common and more esoteric tests.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most complete, handy reference of lab tests ever written
I have been using this reference for several years. I can't practice medicine without it. I have made many esoteric diagnoses with it. It is extremely helpful whenever I have abnormal lab values, which do not seem to make sense at the time. Other lab references pale in comparison. Not only are abnormal labs explained, but the disease processes as well. I really like the way the book divides the elevated lab value from the decreased lab value, with their respective etiologies. An essential, excellent book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Purple Book!
This book made studying for the CHT exam a lot easier. It is easy to read and the authors are very responsive to people learning. They even answered questions I had before taking the exam. I am currently waiting on my test results but feel as if this book coupled with their CD-ROM "Basics and Beyond" that I was well prepared. Keeping my fingers crossed for my results soon!

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE for the OT/PT/CHT treating the Upper Extremity
I am an OT/CHT who largely owes my success in passing the Hand Certification to the wisdom of these two brilliant authors. Using this book as a guide for studying, a quick reference for treating, and a way to test my skills and knowledge has been a phenomenal learning experience. I feel strongly that this is a necessary part of every therapist's library who treats the upper extremity. It "packs it all in" to a user friendly book with an appendix that doesn't quit. When ever these authors offer a book, a course, an online learning experience, I am first in line. This book will soon become your favorite...as I like to call it "the purple book"! You will not be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hand Rehabilitation A Quick Reference Guide and Review

It has also helped me with my study for the Certified Hand Therapy exam by giving practice questions and topics that further direct me in my studies. ... Read more

Book Description

_______

This review is ideal for medical students & residents who are looking for the ultimate board review book for the **USMLE Steps 2 & 3**. Students who are preparing for these exams and are thinking about a residency in medicine, as well as internal medicine residents will ALSO be way ahead of the game when it comes time to sit for their **MEDICINE BOARDS**, that one last boards you’ll take in your third year of medicine residency. This book is concise, thorough, and fully-outlined, so you will clearly see the relationships between all the concepts you’ll have to know. It also features tons of great MNEMONICS you’ll thank your lucky stars for.

Speaking of stars, we know you’ll appreciate our ample use of formatting, especially the use of ***STARRED ITEMS*** which highlight all the recently asked and most commonly asked material on the exam. You should know that this book is an excellent companion to the Frontrunners’ INTERNAL MEDICINE 2004 Q&A REVIEW: Self-Assessment & BOARD REVIEW, which features over 1200 Q&A to prepare you for your boards.

If you’re a mnemonics fan (and who isn’t when there's so much to know?), or like the ones here, then you’ll definitely want to check out TURBO MNEMONICS FOR THE BOARDS 2004: Memory Aids to Commonly Asked CLINICAL Material You GOTTA Know for the USMLE & Medicine Boards. It features OVER 400 truly excellent mnemonics that, we promise, will make your life a whole lot easier. At the same time these resources are outstanding study aids for medical students, residents, internists, and other health care professionals who simply want the best no-nonsense review of internal medicine. Originally designed as the syllabus for the FRONTRUNNERS' INTERNAL MEDICINE BOARD REVIEW COURSE, this book remains today much of the same core material for the board review course, which has seen unparalleled pass rates among its students on the boards. The course has been widely and enthusiastically received for its unconventional, no-nonsense approach to the review of internal medicine.

All major subsections of the exam have been represented with each section bearing its own chapter. Aren’t you tired of reading and rereading (or even falling asleep!) amid long-winded paragraphs from standard textbooks that never make it clear what’s important to know for the exam? So were we, and that’s how this book came into being. This book is completely outlined, so that the relationship between concepts is CRYSTAL CLEAR—no more guessing! You’ll also find tons of key mnemonics you’ll definitely be using on your exam, along with CONTRIBUTIVE FORMATTING through the use of bolds, underlining, italics, boxed-in points, and of course, the ***STARRED ITEMS*** to help call your attention to particularly important material, that the boards like to ask--an outstanding way to capitalize on those last few hours before your exam.

Having said all this, we also realize that there are individuals who have, over the years, grown weary of tedious self-study and who want to take advantage of a sit-down, "feed-me" style of board review, with all the same core material, slides, cases, and more, even if the syllabus can come to them. For this reason we continue to offer our formal WEEKEND MARATHON BOARD REVIEW, covering 18 hours of intensive internal medicine review of all the subspecialties over 1 Sat/Sun. 9 hours each day. Fast paced. High yield items only. Typically the first weekend in August. Don't miss it! Call 866-MDBOARD or 866-IMREVIEW for enrollment details and dates or to order any of our OTHER board review materials, including: 1) TURBO MNEMONICS FOR THE BOARDS, featuring > 400 anagrams and other mnemonics to markedly improve the efficiency of your board review studying; or 2) the Q&A REVIEW, featuring > 1200 Q&A, see the "Quick Order Form" at the very end of this book or just call 866-MDBOARDs or!866-IMREVIEW to order OR inquire. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars We're ALREADY Recommending It
My friend and I studied together last year, using Nail the Boards as our primary study aid, and we both did really well. There was a ton of stuff on the exam right from the book, and a well-organized, completely-outlined format saved us a lot of time. The mnemonics were great we got a lot of points on the exam from those alone. Tables and algorithms were equally well-chosen. The index is well-designed too and made it easy for us to look up specific topics where we were weak. She and I would recommend this review book for sure. The 2002 edition is actually even better. I'm recommending it now to my second and third year residents who are preparing for THEIR exam and am very happy I learned about the book before my exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT REVIEW ! * * * * *
I used this book for my step 3 and did very well, so I'm recommending it highly to any of my friends or anyone still looking. I used the starred items to cram a couple hours before the exam and got a ton of points just from those! I also used ALOT of the memory aids from the book on my exam! My friend used it for her step 2 as well and did great, but for step 3 I can definitely say you GOTTA have it.

5-0 out of 5 stars THANK MY LUCKY 'STARS'...
I TRULY want to 'thank my lucky stars'. I went thru all the starred items in the book, which are all the most commonly-asked material on the boards, then went thru everything in detail, and finally reviewed the starred items only 2 days before the exam and scored 98%ile on my USMLE 3. I got TONS of questions just from those starred items. So, truly, I'm thanking my lucky stars. The 2nd & 3rd year residents are using it for ther medicine boards curriculum as part of our in-house board review. I guess I'll be ahead of the game. Anyway, I'm giving it a HUGE RECOMMEND.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK
This is an excellent book. This book was a major part of my success on Steps 2 AND 3. I support it whole-heartedly. From my experience, if you want to PASS USMLE STEPS 2 AND 3, this book is a MUST. Guaranteed, you will do much better than your fellow-mates.

5-0 out of 5 stars Without a doubt, the best
Without a doubt, the best feature of this book is the STARRED items (*) which basically gives you all the commonly asked material on the exam. For me, it was a gold mine. I went thru all of the starred items the day before my exam. I know I got an extra 20-30 points on my STEP 3 from those items alone. Like one of the other reviewers, I also thought the Frontrunners q&a companion was a great way to prepare. It also had alot of stuff right out of the exam. ... Read more
