4-0 out of 5 stars Definetly worth the money...
I am a US citizen and a caribbean medical student. I was deathly afraid of the CSA--primarily because of the idea that failing it meant another $1200. I studied with a classmate of mine for about 2 months and then studied with a family member for another month (although studying with someone is not required--you can do it on your own). We role-played each case and did the write-ups all under the CSA timed conditions. This is really important! The book is great but just make sure you time each session--both the data gathering and the write-ups. You need to memorize the order of a H&P if you haven't already. When you get to the exam you will be able to take what you learned from the book and pass. The book allows you to hit the high points of what you should get out of the encounter without wasting too much time. The only negative about the book is that some questions that should be asked in some of the cases are omitted. Just make sure that you systematically go through the book and time it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good resource for CSA prep
Although it doesn't have the real CSA format, it is worth studying. It can help you get insight about the CSA. It also has a lot of high-yield complaints that can appear on the real CSA. You can practice thorough history taking and physical exam with the checklist. A must for CSA/CSE candidates!

5-0 out of 5 stars I passed just because of this book
I felt for an IMG this book is very useful and I am sure the success of this book will continue with introduction of CSE for US graduates. I would not have passed CSA without the help of this book

5-0 out of 5 stars best buy for the money
CSA is very expensive and I didn't want to fail it. I prepared for a month with this book and felt I didn't need to read anything else. With this book and the video that ECFMG gives out, I passed without breaking a sweat. I felt comfortable during the exam, and knew what to do. The cases are very similar to what you really get on the exam, and they tell you in the book exactly what you need to do. VERY GOOD BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars all you really need for CSA!!!
I prepared CSA in ten days. This book was AWESOME!!! I got four cases very similar to the ones in the book, and the others were close enough to know exactly how to approach them. The second edition as an appendix on the patient's note, which I found very useful. I honestly didn't consult any other source for the CSA and I'm happy to say this book was worth every penny.

My only advice is that you WORK WITH A PARTNER. Have a friend play your standarized patient, ask questions according to the guidelines given, and do your physical exam. It is a lot more fun and you practice on time management. This book provides the answers to your standarized patient, so he/she doesn't have to know anything about medicine. It also discusses DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS and the basic labs that should be ordered (and why!). It also stresses the importance of good communication skills and empathetic approach. Different cases will measure different things (like one case is purely communication skills and others are mainly history taking, whereas there are a few that only focus on physical exam). The trick is that you never know what each case will measure, so if you want to "pass", you have to do everything well!

In the real CSA, you don't get cards that tell you about findings on the physical exam, so whatever you don't see in a standarized patient, you have to assume as normal. This is the only inaccuracy of the book, but it's a minor detail if you are aware of it.

Time management: start timing yourself the moment you begin reading the introduction to the patient. Knock on the door (I used a spare room in my house to practice), and come in. Introduce yourself and get to the history taking and physical exam. This you should do in 15 minutes (even if the book sometimes gives you 10 minutes for the easy cases). Have someone (or an alarm clock) tell you when 10 minutes have passed, so you will know it's time to wrap up. Walk out the door after 15 minutes. You will be given 10 minutes to write the patient's note. A template of the note is provided in the book, but it is better to use the one given by ECFMG once you apply to the CSA.

Like I said, I think this book is more than enough for CSA. I also had the 40 cases that are out there on the web and they were not nearly as organized and clear. I ended up not even reading them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent quick read
This is an excellent source for high yield anatomy review. Its clinical scenarios, CT scans and other diagnostic images are priceless for Step 1 studying. HOWEVER, this cannot be used alone. An atlas must be used with it to completely cover anatomy. For it brevity and high yield info = 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars CLINICALLY SIGNIFICANT ANATOMICAL CONCEPTS
Anatomy is a subject that might seem endless......until you get this book. When I bought it I knew finally why was anatomy useful in the everyday clinical practice. Friendly, with LOTS of excellent pictures, key essential concepts, and extremely well organized, information just diffuses toward your brain. Also, a USMLE step 1 must have....when I was answering it, I thanked God the book had fell in my hands.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good USMLE review book
This book is not sufficient for course study, but is a very good choice for Step 1 preparation. Anatomy is a fairly low yield topic on the Step 1 exam and this is a good, concise review of clinically relevant anatomy.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable anatomy review book!
This book is perfect for USMLE review. Dr. Dudek cuts through all of the fluff (and in gross anatomy, there is a LOT of fluff!), and focuses in on commonly tested concepts. I also recommend his high-yield embryology book for board review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent quick review
Prevents you from losing sight of the big picture in anatomy. Inappropriate as a primary text, but beautiful as a review book right before an exam of the USMLE. Worth the money. ... Read more

Book Description

The leading textbook in Emergency Medicine now has expanded coverage with 308 chapters, new contributors and new editors. As an American College of Emergency Physicians/Mcgraw-Hill publication, the Study Guide is the defining source for clinical EM management and for those preparing for board or recertification exams. New 2-color figures have been added along with additional tables and algorithms. A new compact at last delivers stunning EM pictures in full color. Many sections have been completely revised including Toxicology (Herbals and Vitamins) and Pediatrics (Respiratory Distress) as well as brand new sections such as Nontraumatic Musculo-skeletal Disorders and Special Patients. Emergency Medicine is changing, but "Tintinalli" remains the authoritative diagnosis and management tool for all emergency conditions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Emergency Medicine Text
As an Emergency medicine resident, the book is the centerpiece of my library. The new edition differs from the previous in the addition of two color text. Using two colors enables them to make the tables more readable. The text is longer than the previous edition. Each chapter is divided up into a short intro/description of normal, followed by etiology, pathophysiology, clinical features, treatment, then special considerations. The writing, as in the previous editions is concise and to the point. This text is priceless because it takes all the concepts and presents them in a clinically relevant way. This is very useful as a general review text, as well as a hands on while working text. Should be in all ED's as well as in all personal libraries of physicians who see patients in the emergency setting.

2-0 out of 5 stars Downward Spiral on Autopilot
*Emergency Medicine, A Comprehensive Study Guide* has long been a well-regarded standard emergency text, useful in day-to-day practice as well as for board preparation. This new edition has advanced the enlightened 'evidence-based recommendations' for changes in practice patterns, however, the lack of editorial control has resulted in a book packed with conflicting information. Each chapter is written by a different consultant, and unfortunately not all of them are up on this concept... we therefore get a series of conflicting statements when there is overlap in topics, and there is no attempt to reconcile this variability. Admittedly, opinions in much of medicine do vary; but outright conflict within a few pages in a standard text without discussion does harm to credibility.

Further loss of editorial control is also evident on a close read. It is apparent that a spell-checker was used for proof-reading (substitutions of the nature of "week" for "weak" abound) and in some areas clinical formulae have been mis-stated -- example: calculation of effective osmolarity, pg. 1341 (though correct elsewhere in the book). The index seems somewhat disorganized, with references to isolated appearance of a word (example: see *first* reference listing to "hyperglycemia"... certainly not the definitive source in the text). This problem is not isolated.

The book has expanded by approximately 500 pages over the 4th edition, totalling more than 2000 pages. Its size makes it unwieldly to read or carry; it should have been separated into 2 volumes. Even with that expansion, much useful information is missing. Though descriptions of EKG abnormalities in advanced electrolyte disturbance are adequately described, it certainly would have been an informational asset to actually include a picture of such characteristic tracings. Dermatology is similarly poorly pictured -- there are only 8 pages of color illustrations in the text, with nearly 2 pages wasted on 1)technique of foreign body removal (not needed in color) 2)a color demonstration of SPECT data -- well outside the range of information needed for the E.M. specialist, and not definitive, besides. Even worse, the illustrations interspersed in the dermatology section are simply black and white copies of the color text -- providing only suboptimal repetition.

Bottom line: the *Comprehensive Study Guide* has been, and remains, a valuable text for an overview of the practice of emergency medicine; but either keep your 4th edition, or wait for the 6th.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is an excellent learning tool!
This book is a great textbook of emergency medicine, and I've chosen it over others simply because it's comprehensive without the useless drivel. Each section includes the necessary anatomy and pathophysiological considerations for the respective disoders. The subset of conditions are mentioned with just enough facts to understand the morbidity to treat it. The pictures, diagrams, algorithmic flow-charts, and drug regimens are a nice compliment, however, most of your clinical experience is going to come from interships and residency, so to assume this book is all you'll need to get by in EM is crazy. I still think it's the best out there to read before putting your mind to work.

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm Afraid to Give it a Bad Review......
Do you know the true meaning of the words "Study Guide?" Well, what that means is that you must be able to achieve a passing score on the American Board of Emergency Medicine's Certifying Exam by studying nothing more than this book. And I believe it, since I have passed it twice studying basically nothing more than this book. While it lacks the broad panache of the "other" two volume tome, the idea that you can pass the certifying exam by memorizing this huge book is, well, it's sexy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory (This is a Review of the Companion Handbook)
Owning this book is simply mandatory--unless, of course, you are certain than neither you nor any loved one will ever need to be admitted to an emergency room. While I am by no means a physician, this thick little paperback has allowed me to make an informed assessment of the treatment that family members have received, and to make it easier for doctors and nurses to explain things to me. Aimed (as you can see from the other reviews here for the massive study guide for which this book is a companion) totally for physicians, it is assumed that the reader is familiar with medical terminology. But it isn't that bad, really--acronyms are usually defined when they are first used in each section, and I have found that a run-of-the-mill collegiate dictionary suffices for most of the anatomic and diagnostic terms. A Physician's Desk Reference would be most helpful for acquainting oneself with the drugs, dosages and regimens referred to in the book, and it doesn't hurt to have someone in the medical field you can query about procedures and policies. Basically, I see no reason why such information needs to be confined to those in the profession, and believe everyone should be aware of the mechanics of trauma treatment. Also, I have simply found it to be fascinating reading (the incredibly succinct description of the stages of child/adolescent development--from the point of view of the assessing ED physician--says more in two pages than all the oceans of ink that have been spilled--in newspapers and magazines--on the topic of children in our society). ... Book Description

What forces lead to changes in governance among medical schools and their associated teaching hospitals? To what extent do such changes affect how well those schools and hospitals do their work? In this book, John A. Kastor, M.D., focuses on the academic medical centers of the University of Pennsylvania and the Johns Hopkins University, two institutions that underwent dramatic change in governance during the late 1990s.

Drawing on extensive interviews with more than three hundred administrators, physicians, and other medical professionals at Penn, Hopkins, and elsewhere, Kastor identifies the factors that influenced changes in governance at these two institutions. Chief among these, he finds, are structure, personality conflicts, and current events. This book will be of interest to administrators of teaching hospitals as well as professionals in health policy and management. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BLUEPRINTS SERIES - GREAT
As with most of the blueprints series for clinical rotations, the book for Peds is an excellent source to use early on in the rotation to pump knowledge into your brain. Use this text to weave the fabric connecting the entire rotation. Use UpToDate or big, fat peds texts (Nelsons, Rudolphs) to learn specifics about your patients. And finally use a question book (Appleton and Lange, for example) to prepare for the shelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars The ONLY book to buy for step 2 peds
this is THE pediatrics book to buy if you are preparing for the step 2. i found the questions asked on the step 2 exam were not as demnading as one may contemplate upon reading this book. Its great if you have the time..(the first reading takes a while)..and some tables (eg baby's milestones table) are very long and boring, sometimes even so detailed that they seem silly for a review book. I had no problems with any pediatrics questions after i read this book.....i got a cool score on the step 2. the other fabulous BluePrints book is the OBG one. DOnt even bother buying any others....

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the shelf exam!
I just took the Pediatrics shelf exam having studied this book thoroughly, and I thought it was superb. The authors did an excellent job selecting high-yield topics and covering them without extraneous detail. However, you really do have to know everything in the book, basically everything that made it into this book is pretty critical.

I also found it handy to add any other facts I learned over the course of the rotation into the margins of the book. It leaves you with a reasonably thorough study guide.

Some people insist on reading Nelson's or another mega-text, but I can't imagine anyone remembering 900 (dense) pages with only three weeks or so of studying. I'd go with blueprints any day.

4-0 out of 5 stars good concise resource
Provides a handy and concise resource of information on almost everything related to pediatrics. Great for 3rd year students, like me. Easier to handle than Lange peds book and much more brief.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite good review for Step 2, and excellent for the wards.
This book helped me score well on the Step 2 exam; I did particularly well on the peds section and I'm not going into that specialty! The book has too much detail in some chapters, but overall it's an excellent review. It goes well with the other blueprints books, particularly medicine and surgery. Ironically, this book helped me understand many adult diseases too! Well worth a buy. ... Read more

Book Description

This easy-to-use resource helps readers to master the most important principles and facts in pathology. More than 1,000 questions cover everything from the fundamentals of gross and microscopic pathology to the latest findings in molecular biology and genetics. Based on two of the field's best-selling, most authoritative textbooks-Kumar et al.: Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease, 7th Edition and Kumar et al.: Basic Pathology, 7th Edition-Robbins and Cotran Review of Pathology, 2nd Edition is an ideal preparatory tool for the classroom, the USMLE Step 1, or the American Board of Pathology exam. * Offers more than 1,000 questions that follow the clinical vignette style used on the USMLE Step 1, emphasizing problem solving over rote memorization. Presented in both single-best-answer and extended-matching formats, they reflect levels of difficulty comparable to those found on the USMLE. * Provides an answer and a detailed explanation for every question at the end of each chapter. * Includes page references and a parallel organization to both Robbins and Cotran and Basic Pathology, making additional information easy to locate. * Presents correlative laboratory, radiologic, and physical diagnostic data to enhance readers' understanding of pathophysiology and to integrate pathology with other medical disciplines. * Uses numerous full-color illustrations to test readers' diagnostic skills. * Delivers a 50-question final "comprehensive" exam on random topics that mimics the format of the USMLE Step 1. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars This is an old edition, get the 2nd edition (2005).
I don't know why this is, but Amazon doesn't list the new edition unless you type in the ISBN number directly (0721601944).So I wanted to warn off others who might accidentally buy this version of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for board review!
Excellent color pictures, and an excellent way to review path. The questions are tough and the book is broken down by systems. This book goes well with either the Big Robbins or even Stars Review pathology since they are both organized by systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Companion for Any Usmle Review Book
This is a very good test book. It is based on Robbins Pathology books. All pictures and slides are from Robbins books. It contains more than 1000 questions, mostly in clinical vignette format. Questions are very well prepared and reflect the clinical picture of each disease entity very well. Each chapter covers most of the needed items for USMLE Step 1. Answers are not exhaustive, but they are enough. I always recommend the combination of BRS Patholgy and this book as the best pathology source for Step 1.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for USMLE 1
Okay so this book was my primary review book for Path for the BoardsI loved the questions and explanations. I used it with First Aid. It has like 1100 questions and in my opinion completely reviews the most impt points in path for you in question format. The questions are very similar to the board in layout with the clinical presentations. Kaplans questions are similar to it but in my opinion this book offers more questions for path and the material is organized for a complete review. Just do like one block/chapter in it per day and read the explanations. This book is your best path review for the exam because its in question format!! My other review books that I liked were. In the Made Ridiculously Series the: Neuroscience, The Anatomy, especially Microbio Made Ridiculously Simple. For pharm and biochem first aid has all you need to know. BRS Physio is also excellent. These were my books hope it helps you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Comprehensive review of Pathology
There are a tremendous amount of questions that encompass the content of Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease.Helpful are the complete discussions of answers and why the wrong answers are wrong--along with references to the page number in Robbins, in case in don't believe them. The questions in this book tend to be from the challenging to ridiculous in terms of difficulty compared with USMLE Pathology questions; however, if you can master these questions, there is no doubt you will do very well on the USMLE or in your Pathology class.Well worth the [money]. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Telemedice and Telehealth by Darkins and CArey
Telemedicine and Telehealth is a timely and useful book. As a Physician and Consultant, Teleheath provides a soup to nuts discussion about the issues relating to telehealth.
The first chapter details basic definitions of the field. The next five chapters deals with the patient, physicans, Healthcare in general, and lastly specific telemedicine services. The authors suggest the formula for telehealth success as improved quality and access to care at a lower cost and without raising professional objestions.
I found the chapters developing the business case for Telemedicine and telehealth services most compelling. These markets are still in their infancy and are still struggling to develop their potential. The authors share with us their strategy for selling Telehealth services (page 157).
Telemedice and Telehealth, also provides a cautionary note. The authors indicate that to date they were not aware of studies demonstrating a viable telehealth model with the current legislation and reimbursement structure. Further issues such as licensure, quality assurance and backup systems remain to be clearly defined.
This book is an excellent read. Concise, articulate and timely. I would recommend this book to any one intersted in Telemedicine or Telehealth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, useful for novices and specialists
As a software developer and member of the American Telemedicine Association, I found this book to be a very valuable reference. Our company is developing software solutions to allow patients and health care providers easy, secure access to medical information. This book has helped us understand how telemedicine is developing and how it will be used, so that we can see the developing niches for our products. This book provides the larger view of this developing field and gives readers inspiration to enter the exciting field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Telemedicine and Telehealth is Now!
As a practicing physician with a keen interest in information technologies and their applications in healthcare, I always approach books like this with some bemusement. In turn, I was pleasantly surprised by my delight with this book. To succeed in the charge to bridge the digital divide and to eliminate health disparities, we physicians and managers will have to arm ourselves with timely solutions which are informed by experience and science. Coupled with the practical and the "how to" make "Telemedicine and Telehealth" a valuable resource for anyone interested in creating the future healthcare system. It connects and transcends the important elements and issues rather than just regurgitating the problems we've heard over and over again. If you believe, as I do, that the future of healthcare will be greatly enhanced by the new information technologies, this book helps to put the present and future in perspective. Darkins and Cary absolutely succeed!

5-0 out of 5 stars The future of health care thru high technology
Review of: Telemedicine and Telehealth by Adam W. Darkins and Margaret A. Cary

This important book begins the necessary critical conversation of defining the fundamental of concepts and terms, as well as those areas of current and future applications, involved in the merging of health care delivery and high technology systems. The authors wisely suggest using the term Telehealth to address the broad range of health applications which high technology, the Internet in particular, can greatly impact.

These concerns are set in the context of both a historical view of health care and society, particularly in the more technologically developed societies of the U.S. Western Europe and Japan, and these societiesÕ current and future trends toward change of lifestyle driven by their adaptation of new technologies. These are vital concerns, both within health care delivery in particular, as well as within the economic and social evolution of these societies in general.

Their book focuses on the patientÕs experience of health care service as facilitated by this new technology rather than being yet another discussion of the fascinating innovations within the technology itself, a very important distinction.

Being physicians themselves, authors Darkins and Cary have professionally grown up through the very cusp of change they are defining for us; they know the pre-high technology delivery of health care and have been witness to, and advocates for, the introduction of high technology to the health care systems in which each have worked, both in the U.S. and England.

Their book is both comprehensive in its discussion of the issues involved as well as being detailed in its coverage of those particulars necessary to see the overall picture clearly.

Because of the timeliness of this merging of high technology and healthcare delivery, one wishes this book could be made more available to a wider reading public through a greater promotional effort by the publisher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn about telemedicine and telehealth
Conceptually, the answer to many of health care's challenges lie in the use of new information technologies. Knowing this is the case and making it happen are two very different entities. This book ably bridges these two entities. The devil, as always, is in the details and the authors deftly elaborate the problems and provide solutions. I recommend this book to practitioners, administrators, managers and policy makers who are energetic and enthusiastic about the future direction of health care. Errol L. 4-0 out of 5 stars Anesthesia Secrets
I have used this book, periodically, since my CA-1 year, and I find the material to be useful as an adjunct, or supplementation, in my studies for my anesthesiology boards.

You should not use this book alone to learn the art and science of anesthesiology, as the discipline requires a voluminous amount of study to be a safe and competent practitioner. This book, however, is good for it's intended use by the Author, James Duke, MD, University of Colorado, by taking a large amount of knowledge and making it digestable for practical scenarios.

Solid references and bibliographies make this a reliable resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Summary of Most Important topics in Anesthesia
I owned the first edition of this book during medical school while taking a rotation in Anesthesiology, and it was an INVALUABLE aid! I could find many answers to questions I was "pimped" on during the rotation, which were hard or impossible to find in the standard large text books. I highly recommend it to anyone doing a rotation in, planning on going into, or working in and around Anesthesiologists! An absolutely wonderful book, buy it!

4-0 out of 5 stars NMS USMLE step 2 practice tests
Overall a pretty useful book for studying for the boards. Covers a multitude of subjects. Detailed explanations of answers are a plus as very often most books just give you the right answer, leaving most asking, "why did I get that wrong?" Drawback to the book are that the questions are not always test-quality in that they can be ambiguous or at worst, wrong.

4-0 out of 5 stars NMS Review for the USMLE Step 2
Very good book. Many questions on the exam were very similar if not the same, there are only so many ways you can rewrite a question. This book covered pretty much everything and brought certain things to your attention that you might have skimmed over. If you are able to pass the exams in this book you will do fine on step 2. Good buy, especially for the price. Good Luck.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not very up to date
This has many review questions for step 2 but there are many that are not representative of the type of questions on the actual exam. Some questions are way too specific and not clinically based. If one is looking for a book with a lot of practice questions it does have that to offer but many of them are not helpful in preparation for the exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
I used this book in the last two weeks before the exam...the questions were pretty difficult, maybe a little more picky than the real exam. But the topics tested were high-yield - a lot of the topics came up in the actual exam. This is a good book to fill in any gaps in your knowledge before the exam. Together with this book, the "Pretest Clinical vignettes" and the Kaplan Q-book, I did enough questions to get me a 97 on the exam.

2-0 out of 5 stars obscure detail
Most of the questions in this book are a waste of time. The Usmle is not going to test you on the relative ratios if LDH1 to LDH2 to LDH3 to LDH4 ... or the most common infection in people named joe with 11 toes and 3 elbows... but this book will. I'm always surprised at the reputation this book has. It is a waste to learn the detail in this book. The best question book is Mock step2 by brochert - You will learn the high yield stuff. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars New book with needed corrections
This is a wonderful text for students in the entry level of nursing. However, many skills listed in the text are missing information or have conflicting information from the hardcover text also published by Delmar. I have used this text for 2 entry level courses and both courses have noted missing, incomplete or inaccurate data that will need to be updated, corrected and/or assimilated to correspond with the Fundamentals text that is designed as a corresponding text with this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars clinical skills resuscitation....
This tome of timely tips is in truth a fairly comprehensive textbook/clinical lab manual with detailed skills descriptions, including photos and illustrations. The anecdotal patient stories are a bit much (truth is always stranger than fiction, particularly the lady drowning in the instant quicksand of a punctured therapeutic sand bed...) but on the whole, this is a comprehensive clinical manual in a very readable format. Designed for the ADN 2-year, 3-year RN, or CNA/RN programs. ... Read more
