4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for nurse practitioner students.
I was finding the Pharmacology text in Grad. school very confusing. This book defined M2,M3,Alpha and Beta agonists & antagonists in a clear, easy to comprehend manner. Good clear charts. Cartoons were pretty worthless but I like the book. Good to study from for tests.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick, easy way to understand basis of pharmacology
This book is an exelent way to look at the basic drugs used in medicine. It allows you to see through tables the actions, indicatios, undesirable effects, etc of commonly used drugs. This book is quick, easily understandble and full of pictures that make learning and understanding easier. Exellent for medicine students who need a quick grasp of the most commonly used drugs

2-0 out of 5 stars A JOKE
Someone wrote that this book was wonderful for ANY pharmacology test. HAHAHAHAHA JOKE! Same way with Lippencotts... That is if you are taking REAL pharmacology. Don't waste your time with either of the books if you actually are expected to know something about Pharmacology.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mistakes! Mistakes! Mistakes!
This new edition is filled with typos and mistakes. I wrote a letter to "Dr" Olson pointing out the errors that I found in his new edition. However, I have yet to hear from him. The previous edition is better. It has less typos.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as amazed as everybody else.
Yes, this is a pretty good review book. It has drugs stuffed into tables, and even includes some good text in the chapters. Unfortunately, there just isn't enough info in the book for a pharm class or a USMLE review. Run and buy Lippincotts if you want the best pharm book on Earth. Ridiculously simple, has alot of great books but this really isn't one of them. It is ok but really isn't all that useful. GO BUY LIPPINCOTTS NOW....Believe me that will make your pharm experience simple as it can be. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars not enough
Pros: You can use it as a broad guideline to prepare for Part I/PRITE but it has to be supplanted by the synopsis or other texts. Solid info on major DSM d/o, psychopathology, psychopharm, CL psychiatry, special populations, health-care delivery, risk issues and neurology.
Cons: The questions are too basic and short-stemmed and do not reflect the complexity of the board questions. Your old PRITE papers will be more helpful for the practice. Some of the figures are questionable and do not tally w/ the major texts. Child and social sciences sections are inadequate and too sketchy. Psychotx sections inadequate and ill-organized for review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource for psychiatry review & preparing for Boards
This book is REALLY helpful. Each of the 83 chapters gives a comprehensive yet succinct review of a specific topic with an eye towards the "must know" facts. The chapters are grouped into 5 sections: 1) test-taking strategies, 2) psychiatric diagnosis and conditions, 3) neurological disorders, 4) treatments, and 5) special topics in psychiatry. Plus there is a Q & A section with 400 practice questions and answers explained. The psychopharm stuff is thorough and very up-to-date. I especially like the short "Suggested Readings" at the end of each chapter, which has been a great resource for those topics that I wanted to review more thoroughly. The test-taking strategies give great pointers and outline what to expect during the exam, as well as how to avoid common errors. This book is a no-nonsense, nuts-and-bolts practical guide to passing the Psychiatry Boards, and a gold mine for saving time in the process. Overall, an A+++. ... Read more

Book Description

__________

This review is aimed at practicing internists and residents of INTERNAL MEDICINE who have surely been searching for a concise, outlined, and one-of-a-kind review of internal medicine in all of its subspecialties for the INTERNAL MEDICINE CERTIFICATION AND RECERTIFICATION EXAMS administered through the American Board of Internal Medicine. This book is concise, thorough, and fully-outlined, so you will clearly see the relationships between the concepts you’ll have to know.It also features tons of great MNEMONICS you’ll thank your lucky stars for.Speaking of stars, we know you’ll appreciate our ample use of formatting, especially the use of*** STARRED ITEMS ***to help call attention to particularly important material. Over the years, we’ve been blessed with tons of questions and answers from the boards that have been voluntarily submitted by physicians who have gone on to pass their boards, in their effort to help those "soldiers left behind"!You should know, then,!that this book is an excellent companion to the Frontrunners’ Internal Medicine 2004 Q&A REVIEW: Self-Assessment & Board Review, which features over 1200 Q&A to prepare you for battle.

We run promotions throughout the year, where you can actually get the Q&A book half-off with your Frontrunners’ syllabus when you call directly at: 866-MDBOARDS (866-632-6273) or 866-IMREVIEW (866-467-3843) and refer to promotional code #amznQ1/2off.Equally important, we offer a number of packages featuring all our T.O.P. (Take Out Package) board review books (includes these: Syllabus, 1200 Q&A book, Mnemonics book, and HIV and Blood Gas booklets for the boards--which are ALL of our printed board review materials), as well as our even more popular Audio Visuals CD packages for the Boards. Make sure you know all of our latest offerings and promotions. Call to find out about our various packages and ways to save OR for the most recent brochure featuring all of our offerings. We can even email it to you within minutes for your convenience or send it via snail mail. Currently, all AudioVisual packages automatically include all the TOP books (Syllabus, Q&A, Memory Aids, HIV and!ABGs for the Boards), and represent huge savings when you order directly. They're also ideal if you just can't make it out to our Weekend Marathon Reviews in California each August. If you’re a mnemonics fan (and who isn’t?), or you love the ones here, then you’ll definitely want to check out TURBO MNEMONICS FOR THE BOARDS! : Over 400 MEMORY AIDS to the Most Commonly Asked CLINICAL Material on the Medicine Boards! It features 100s of mnemonics that, we promise, will make your life a whole lot easier. At the same time these resources are outstanding study aids for medical students, residents, internists, and other health care professionals who simply want the best no-nonsense review of internal medicine. The course has been widely and enthusiastically received for its unconventional, no-nonsense approach to the review of internal medicine.Unfortunately, thousands of physicians, wanting to be board-certified, are simply unable to attend a formal board review course due to!time or geographic constraints. For those physicians especially this book will be a welcome review.

All major subsections of the exam have beenrepresented with each section bearing its own chapter. Aren’tyou tired ofreading and rereading (or even falling asleep!) amid long-winded paragraphs from standard textbooks that never make it clear what’s important to know for the exam?So were we, and that’s how this syllabus came into being. This book is completely outlined, so that the relationship between concepts is crystal clear—no more guessing! You’ll also find tons of key mnemonics you’ll definitely be using on your exam, along with contributive formatting through the use of bolds, underlining, italics, boxed-in points, and of course, the *** STARREDITEMS *** to help call your attention to particularly important material, that the boards like to ask--an outstanding way to capitalize on those last few hours before your exam.A thorough and realistically designedIndex section makes those look-ups, whether throughout your studies or just before your boards, a cinch!

Having said all this, we also realize that there are individuals who have, over the years, grown weary of tedious self-study and who want to take advantage of a sit-down, "feed-me" style of board review, with all the same core material, slides, cases, and more, even if the syllabus can come to them. For this reason we continue to offer our formal / sit-down board review course each year. This is an intensive, 18-hour, HIGH-YIELD-ITEMS-ONLY WEEKEND MARATHON REVIEW, offered each year in early August—ideal for most physicians who can’t break away during the week. For upcoming dates or to register for any of theseWEEKEND MARATHON REVIEWS, or to order 1) TURBO MNEMONICS FOR THE BOARDS, featuring > 400 anagrams and other mnemonics to markedly improve the efficiency of your board review studying; or 2) the Q&A REVIEW, featuringover 1200 realistic Q&A, see the "Quick Order Form" at the very end of this book or just call866-MDBOARDs (866-632-6273) NOW to order or find out more. Why make your studying any harder than it actually has to be?If you can’t make that weekend, the Audio CD Syllabus & Slide Shows for the Boards can be shipped out.You get the whole weekend, only without the added expense of hotel + airfair + tuition.

We’re confident that you’llfind this an outstanding resource for your upcoming board exam (as well as your day-to-day practice of Internal Medicine). Our greatest hope, however, is that we’ve shown you an easier way to passing your boards!

With best wishes for you,

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST-HAVE
I couldn't make it out to Frontrunners' Weekend Marathon Review course, so got the syllabus instead. It was really outstanding. The syllabus went through all the key stuff you have to know for your I.M. cert boards and things that were all over the exam. The cherry on top was that, like the other reviewers, I got my Q&A book free when I called Frontrunners for my syllabus.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb I.M. Review Syllabus
I truly felt this was a superb review for the medicine boards, and my scores agree. I went thru everything once, then hit all the boxed-in points and starred items the 2nd and 3rd times. The starred items are all the key stuff that you gotta know and that were EVERYWHERE on my exam. Superb resource for the ABIM /internal medicine certification exam. My partner used it for her I.M. recert and also did extremely well. She had also attended the Frontrunners' Weekend Marathon Review and loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT SYLLABUS! LOVED THE COURSE!
Very thorough, concise, well-organized. Great for the internal medicine I.M. boards. While I didn't get my Q&A for free, like some of the other reviewers, I did get my syllabus for free when I made it out to the review, which was a high-yield, dynamic review like nothing I'd seen before. Great slides. Dynamic lectures. Great memory aids. A major recommend from me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Oustanding. WishI'd known about it earlier.
Great syllabus! I got my copy 1 week before the exam after my partner recommended it. I'm sure I got at least 30 points from the STARRED (*) items alone, which I scanned the day before. That's a must. The Q&A book was also truly excellent. Even better, my Q&A book was free when I called Frontrunners for my syllabus. Excellent resources if you're aiming to pass your I.M. boards. I only wish I'd known about it earlier.

5-0 out of 5 stars HIGH YIELD FROM START TO FINISH
I thought the Syllabus was high yield throughout. I got at least 30 points on my IM boards from this source alone and another 20 or so from the Q&A companion. Even better, my partner and I got the Q&A book FREE when we ordered our syllabus through Frontrunners 866-mdboard number. So a definite recommend for all these reasons. ... Read more

Book Description

Winner of the prestigious AJN Book of the Year award, Teaching in Nursing is a key resource in the dynamic structure and function of preparing the nurses of the future for teaching careers. Faculty must be conditioned to look forward and teach in new ways; diversity of students, curriculum development, redesigning of health care systems, and information and technology advances are just a few of the growing challenges that facing those who choose to instruct. This result is largely due to the editors' standing in the nursing community and their ability to secure only the very best contributors. This is only 3-in-1 nursing education resource available! While most other texts address only one component of teaching, Teaching in Nursing covers three-teaching, curriculum, and evaluation. It provides comprehensive, contemporary guidelines to help instructors meet the day-to-day challenges of teaching. Instructors will also find the guidance they need to ensure that their teaching practices reflect the evolving health care environment. The authors reference current literature in nursing education, as well as the classics in nursing, education, and other fields.Judy Halstead chairs the task force on "Development of Nurse Educator Competencies" for the National League for Nursing, and is on the front line of influencing the trends in teaching education. Dr. Halstead is also the program evaluator for the CCNE. Both Drs. Halstead and Billings serve on the NLN Think Tank for Nursing Education and are frequently sought as educational consultants. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars new edition--great improvement
The second edition of the Comprehensive Review is great! The outline is more complete and inclusive. The depth of facts is just enough for review for PA boards. The two exams included are a great tool to help assess your preparedness for the boards! I highly recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Flawed
This text is good for simply supplying a study list and a basic outline to fill in with your own review information. But the outline alone is too basic, leaves out important topics, and contains multiple errors, whether they be typo-s, over-simplifications, bad translation of a higher reference, inappropriate verbage or incorrect qualitative statements. And the practice exam CD has just enough errors to be annoying. Material reviewed by medical professionals needs to be accurate. This study guide needs to be paired with a medical reference intended for physicians to make it useful (try Lange's Current).

5-0 out of 5 stars exam preparation
I recently used this book, and others, to review for the PANRE. This book stands out for clarity, pertinent information concisely delivered, AND for accuracy!....one other book that I used was VERY disappointing in that it contained multiple errors!..
The questions on the exam were exactly covered in this text. I recommend it highly.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
This book my be "approved by the APPA and APAP", but don't being fooled by these endorsements. The books outline is too basic as are the review question and don't reflect the level of difficulty of the boards. I was also disappointed that the review questions in the book and on the CD are identical. Except, the CD mixes up some of the graphics. What should be radiology pictures for radiology questions turn out to be radiology picture and ECG questions and vice versa(use the questions in the book as a reference they are correct.
You are much better served by purchasing "Physician Assistant Review" ISBN: 0781742315. It seems to follow Currents "CDMT" to a tee, but thankfully leaves out the esoteric information that is too much for a fledging PA anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Review for the Certification and Recertifica
I highly recommend this book to Physician Assistant students studying for the PANCE. It is brief and straight to the point. The CD-ROM is an excellent complement to the book. The questions at the back are excellent also. It is lightweight and not too bulky and as a student I certainly appreciate this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a great resource
I read this book the day before starting my 3rd year psychiatry clerkship. It was amazing and made my life so much easier. You can easily read this book in an afternoon and get a great view of psychiatry as a whole. Its strength is its brevity and readability, while not sacrificing much in the way of actual content. A great book for medical students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review for wards and Step 2
This book helped me do quite well on Step 2. It is both concise and relevant. It covers the essentials with review-level depth; if you're looking for a core textbook, this ain't it. Its only drawback is the price per page ratio.

4-0 out of 5 stars blueprints in psychiatry (blue prints series)
very short and concise book for psychiatry. covers all the high yield material for the boards.has got some good tables. the best thing about this book is it is just about 96 pages and makes it very easy to read.for step2 and step3 psychiatry this book will be of great help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best psychiatry review for USMLE step 2
This book is concise and easy to read to cover psychiatry for USMLE step 2. The description of each topics are straight to the point, and focusing on the details that appear in the exam. The biggest weak point of this book is that it lacks clinical viganettes, so it can be hard for you to get the image of each disorders. So if you can get one of those clinical viganette books, that will be perfect. Additionally, they are missing some important topics, such as sleeping disorders, but still, this is the best available at this point. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Maybe overkill, but contains everything you need to know
This book covers all the important info you need to know for Step 1. Its clinical scenarios are the gem of this book. It does however contain more than you need to know for this infrequently tested subject. But for any embryology book out there, this is the one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good review book
This is not a great primary text for embryology. It is however, a good review book especially for a subject like embryo., when one doesnt know what to expect and how much time should be given. It misses a few essential explanations (especially in the topics dealing with development of face ) and illustrates only the important points.I would recommend you to read a primary text and then use this book

2-0 out of 5 stars Only good for USMLE review.
This book is too concise to study from for your medical course. It has no explanation of the facts or theories whatsoever. It is perfect once you've already learnt Embryology (from another book), and wish to simply review the facts. But if you are studying Embryology for the first time, consider: Moore & Persaud - Before We Are Born, Larsen - Human Embryology, and Sadler - Larsen's Medical Embryology.

Personally this is one book I would not want on my bookshelf, because I do not believe in buying books simply for review. I want a reference, something I can go back to when I need to check something.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the newer edition.
This book is much more concise than the revised edition. For being a low-yield subject on the boards, I would not waste my time on the expanded, newer version. This one is more than adequate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book!
I WISH I had used this book DURING my embryology course in med school (instead of waiting to use it for just review)! It would have been very helpful for exams. Most of the other High Yield books work best when used as a supplement to a more detailed book (or as a review after you've learned the material), but this one is still pretty detailed itself, without being overwhelming. It is a great review of the essential things you need to know for the USMLE. Good pictures, great clinical correlations, and good layout. It is up-to-date as well. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
Best book on the subject, goes hand-in-hand with Guyton's book. Common pathologies of each system or organ is described sometimes with nice colored pictures. Explanations are very simple and easy to understand. Each system is first explained in terms of structure and physiology and than followings chapters in that section takes on pathologies of the system or its components, number of chapters depending on the system complexity. It is a perfect book for pathology or parallel book with physiology to understand physiology with its applications.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's not so bad if you know what you're getting into.
I'm glad that you've come. It shows that you believe in looking ahead and being prepared. A little bit of that action would have saved General Custer and his men a whole lotta' headache. With a bit of luck, reading this review will do the same for you. Hopefully (because you'll be ready for what's coming), by the time you finish this book you won't want to put a bullet through your head and forcibly remove your own scalp (in that order). My initial reaction to the book wasn't as bad as it might be for others (I have a high tolerance for pain and boredom), however I would like to do my best to prevent any Dubliners-induced tragedies. I will admit, when I first read this book I did not enjoy it at all. I don't know about you folks, but I enjoy a book where at least some of the characters have at least one redeeming quality. You're hard up to find so sweet a gem in this anthology. From open to close the reader is bombarded with every class of loser imaginable. If it's not some gutless nobody without the heart to even attempt to go after his dreams, it's a drunk who beats his children. Of course there was that one part where Ransom got into a fistfight with Satan-oh, wait. That was from a book I enjoyed (C.S. Lewis's Perelandra-check it out). Let's not get confused about this. Saying that I did not enjoy the book does not imply that I do not like it. Often in life, things look entirely different in retrospect. Dubliners is one of those things. James Joyce wrote this book at about the time he expatriated. There have to be some pretty powerful feelings behind a decision to leave one's own country. In this book you get a glimpse of what he saw, the things that he dealt with everyday. You see the world that he put up with, and you see it through his eyes. In that regard, this is one of the most powerful pieces produced in recent times. Nevertheless, I write book reviews with people like my dad in mind. If it gets too real or hits too close to home, he won't take it. You can visualize it like this: Quigley Down Under = Good; Dingoes Ate My Baby = Bad. If he doesn't get a huge kick out of it, he will have nothing to do with it. So, if you're looking for huge explosions, karate chops, or campfire flatulence, this is not the book for you. On the other hand, if you like 'em slow, powerful, subtle, and poignant (and moderately depressing-cough, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, cough) Dubliners is your sack of oats, Mr. Ed. I find myself caught in the middle of the two types: which means that if it can blow up and move me at the same time, I'm sold-kinda' like a Tchaikovsky finale. The book is classic-quality literature; I won't deny that. I'm just saying that it's not for everyone. It's definitely not my dad's cup of tea (technically, nothing is his 'cup of tea.' He won't touch the stuff. He says it makes him gassy-but I digress).

5-0 out of 5 stars disease at it's best
As a graduating student in Homoeopathic medicine this is without a doubt the best general book I have read so far in this field. It uses a great variation of diagrams, charts, pictures and text, thus allowing for differing styles of absorption. It's subjct headings are broken into logical chapters and the recent addition of chapters for infant and elderly pathology is a fine improvement. The text is friendly and well written but remains professional. It also come with an A drive disk carrying a basic exam based round the books content. This is the first book I would recommend to students starting in this field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for FPGEE
I found this book very helpful for my Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination. It has covered a lot of important topics in one book. I recommend this book for licensure examination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
This book is a Godsend! I was given the opportunity to write the Evaluation Exam for the PEBC in Canada and I had no idea where I was going to get all the information I needed to study. This book is really a 'Comprehensive Review' of what was done at University (and sometimes, what was NOT done too!). There are a few errors in the text which you should keep in mind (don't accept everything as truth without questioning statements occasionally. If you are wide awake, you will spot them. All in all, a brilliant book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Step 1
USMLE Step 1 Secrets is a great book for Step 1. It is well written, covers extremely high yield material, and even explains some topics much better than many of the other highly used Step 1 books. I definitley recommend it to anyone studying for the boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING !!!
This is one of the best review books out there, and also an excellent review for any level of medical education.
I esp. enjoyed the mild humor in the case presentations, such as that in the Behavioral Sciences chapter, with the surgeon who had a narcissistic personality disorder. A classic !

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
I was skeptical about it because it's brand new this year and not reviewed...should I spend my money? But I took the chance and it is EXCELLENT! I would highly recommend it to those studying for Step 1 because it's integrative and give you an explanation (in plain english) that tends to stick more than just looking at lists and bulleted formats (e.g. Step Up and First Aid). Sure, I use Step Up and First Aid, but I think you should get this along with your First Aid- especially those of you who don't feel as confident!! Excellent resourse

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for Step 1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just finished reading this book today and I must say this book is OUTSTANDING! In my opinion, this book will soon be in the same category as the "First Aid Step 1" series, no doubt about it. The book is divided into an easy to read and understand systems based approach. Each chapter (18 total) begins with basic concept and then immediately takes you into 7-12 case studies about each system topic. Each case study is further broken down into "mini-question" to bring the reader to the important concepts. There are a few diagrams and charts that help tie in certain concepts, especially the tougher topics. It would be a shame to go without this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great systems based review book!
This book is systems based and uses case based scenarios.
Each chapter starts with basic concepts. After that, you get the scenarios.
You are given a brief case then asked around 4-10 questions based on the case. Each question is followed by a paragraph explaining the answer.

My school is on a systems based curriculum and we currently are doing reproductive.

As we were learning the female reproductive system, it was easy to review by looking at the cases in this book. It was an amazing help!
It summarized what we had learned in class and emphasized the important concepts.

Looking through the behavioral sciences section and reviewing it also helped greatly.
We had that section last fall and after reading the cases, the main concepts came back to me rapidly.

If you are on a systems based curriculum, check out this book!

If you are on a different curriculum, take a glance at this anyway.
For me, it did a great job of summarizing concepts.

The other great part of this book is its size. This book is small!
It is 6 x 9 and easy to carry with you anywhere.
Sometimes it is nice to run to Starbucks to study with a small book instead of the big book bag loaded with review books.

I also have first aid for the USMLE Step 1, Step-Up) a systems based review for USMLE step 1) and Kaplan's review course (2003 version). Those are good books and will use them to supplement my learning, but for me, this is going to be the book from which I will do my heaviest studying. ... Read more

Book is good for overall review, BUT I took the registry May 2004, and the book is no help at all! Registry questions are structured total different than material is presented. Over 40% of registry questions were not even covered in the review book. Save your textbooks, this review is a waste of money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for students preparing for the ARRT
This book is an excellent tool for preparing for the registry. It contains all information and great reviews. Me and some of my fellow students bought it and we all passed with excellent scores
