Book Description

Discover why admissions officers from the nation’s top medical schools selected these essays of worthy applicants

With only a limited number of spaces available every year to the thousands of
qualified applicants to the nation’s top medical schools, a serious candidate must find
a way to set himself or herself apart from the crowd. The essay is your one chance to
highlight the personal qualities and achievements that the application and MCAT
scores do not reveal.

As Essays That Worked for Medical Schools
demonstrates, there is no such thing as
the perfect submission. The winning essays cover a wide range of interesting topics. If there is any similarity, it is that they are written from the heart. One applicant writes about his work as a counselor for mentally ill adults and teens. Another tells about the life-changing experience of delivering much needed supplies to a leprosy village in West Africa. And a third applicant talks about time spent volunteering at a local senior center. From the thousands submitted each year, the essays in this book were considered some of the best by admissions officers at the nation’s top medical schools.

With creativity and effort, you can turn almost any topic into an effective, successful essay for your medical school application!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for applicants
I am an educational counselor and received all four of the new "Essays That Worked" books recently. These books are perfect for any applicant stumped by or anxious about writing a personal statement. The essays are inspiring, and the advice is frank and fresh. I have recommended Stephanie Jones's "Medical School Admissions: The Insider's Guide" to my clients for years, and I will now highly recommend "Essays That Worked for Medical School" as well. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but some bad errors
On page 17, the two formulas for creatinine clearance are wrong. Has anyone else noticed this? Also, on page 18, the reticulocyte index formula isn't accurate because it doesn't factor in the maturation factor. Other than that, this is a very useful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Must for the new Intern
This book was a lifesaver for me on many occasions and now as a PGY2 I recommend it to all new incoming PGY1 and even sub-i's. The book covers all of the major "fires" you will encounter and need to "put out" (usually on your own). With this book I found that even though I could call for backup, I rarely needed to because all I needed was right there in the book. The most important advice I can give, though, is to read the book from beginning to end the week just before you start Internship. That is the key! Then just carry it with you as a refresher.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Washington Manual Internship Survival Guide
I highly recommend this book to interns. it covers most of the topics that you may encounter on your internship oncall. it cover the subjects stepwise and you will know what to do next. it is very helpfull if you are alone and nobody around to tell you what to ask or what to order or how to handle the case. it is very easy to use and not time consuming to find a topic fast when you are oncall and time is short.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book
This is one of the best books you will buy as a medical student or intern. It is a requirement for your pocket. At Barnes-Jewish Hospital they give this to all the interns in July. If you know read it a couple times it will make internship easy...except for the 100 hours a week you will put into the job...Honestly...BUY IT- I would have bought it in medical school if I knew about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Internship Must Own
Buy this book if you are a fourth year medical student or intern ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC LITTLE REVIEW BOOK!
This book is not only great for quick look ups on rounds, but it is great during the first 2 years of med school because the little highlights/buzzwords helps with exams.
Very easy to read, highlights just the important stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little book, not much different from previous edition
Great book for what it's intended for- this is a handbook that only provides the essentials; nothing this size can be as all-encompassing as a complete textbook of medicine or UpToDate, so don't buy it with those expectations in mind. Covers facts on a surprisingly large number of diseases, ones often overlooked in many other handbooks such as Ferri's Guide, Washington Manual, or Pocket Medicine (the latter doesn't even mention anything on stroke management).

Of note, the new (4th) edition is no different from the 3rd edition with the exception of a few review questions tacked on the end, so if you have the older version, there's no need to upgrade. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great
This book can be used not only for exams but for basic review of certain subjects. My favorite 3 chapters/sections in this book are hemodynamics, pulmonary function tests, and blood gases. If you have this book you actually dont need to get books from above mentioned 3 subjects. It would be great if Mr Sills would combine both entry and advance books into one since alot of info overlaps anyway and probably in the near future there will not be any CRT's left it will probably be only RRT's (RCP)

4-0 out of 5 stars I bought it for the pictures . . .
Actually, I bought it for the hemodynamics. I found (and still find) the book to be quite helpful. The layout is very basic - just the listing of information. That almost put me to sleep occasionally because I do better with an outline style (I use this and a Persing review together and that's perfect for me). The illustrations and tables in the Sills are definitely among the better I've seen in these books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for shelf board exam
When I took the shelf board, my jaw dropped - it was as if the board came straight out of this book. Concise, but loaded with information. Lacks only info on immunizations and milestones, but these can be found anywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent review!
This book is a perfect review for the USMLE-2. It include 5oo clinical-cases question with pictures and X-rays. The questions are shorter than on real exam but they help you to concentrate on high-yeld topics and learn important details which are often missed in other review books.
The book is well-organized. The questions are arranged in chapters. For example, the newborn infant, respiratory system, cardiovascular system... This allows you to learn the topic first and than sharpen your knowlege using this book. Plus, you can practice with questions before you finish reading the whole Pediatrics!
Perfect review!

1-0 out of 5 stars MS Reader Version is cumbersome
The content of this book is good, but I recommend against the MS Reader version of this edition. MS reader is very basic--you can only flip forward/backward by page or chapter--basically ok for reading novels. But this version of Pediatrics PSAAR is straight text w/out links to answers, checkboxes for the practice questions, etc. It is frustrating and time consuming to write your answer for a question on paper, flip to the beginning of the next chapter of answers, and flip page-by-page to your specific answer in the answer chapter. You have to do this all over again backwards and then forwards if you want to remind yourself what the question asked or what your answer said. There is also no way to view more than one location in the book at one time. MS Reader is horrible for a Q&A Review format. Waste of money. If they were to come out with a version containing links to answers, weblike forward and back buttons, checkboxes for your answers, a scoring system, and even a palm version, I would go bonkers over it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I used this book to help review for Step 3. As a resident in IM, I really needed a Peds refresher. This book was excellent for the job. It was a tough review, but I think it's a necessary task for the Boards. Allow a few days to cover the book (including time to look up the answers in your Peds reference). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and easy to read!
I am starting medical school in the fall and after being out of school for a year, I wanted to brush up on my basic biochemistry knowledge. This book allows for concise review without having to dig through a huge text. It highlights the important points in a well organized manner. I suppliment when needed with my old biochemistry text, but haven't even needed to do that much. It is a must for anyone needing a good outline of important biochemistry topics in a clear format.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Comprehensive Review Book
When I started to study this book I did not have any idea of biochemistry at all. It was almost 8 years after I had taken the course in medical school and honestly I barely passed it. This book gave me all I needed and actually thought me biochemistry from the basics to the top. I have never seen a review book more complete and flawless than this book. The only issue is, the book is lengthy and needs a lot of time to read and these days biochemistry does not show up in USMLE Step 1 very often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for biochemistry
This book was excellent for my biochemistry class and for board studying. I used it mainly as a reference during my board studying. It has great diagrams and references to biochemical diseases.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Biochem book for med school!
Excellent textbook. Thorough, but succinct. Definitely enough to ace your med school biochem and the boards.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not the final word, either
This is a decent book for an introduction to the wards, but is certainly not the be all and end all for step 2. It should be targeted much more for second year students getting their first exposure to bedside medicine, and presents a nice and digestible look at approaches to various common conditions.

Use it for what it is and don't expect it to save your life, either on the wards or the USMLE, and it'll do just fine by you. Not bad, but again, not complete enough or in depth enough to make it a must-have resource.

2-0 out of 5 stars read this and flunk the step 2
seriously, its a nice read....but it totally lacks the detail you need for the step 2
i found it off the point totally. after reading it twice, i thought "i know nothing".....and that was probably true. i aced the step 2, but thats not cos of this book. it may be a great book for whatever purpose......but not for the step 2 exam. try adam brochert's secrets or crush series. they are like 100 times better. i mean it. trust me on this one.
if you are looking for blue prints books for the step 2....i highly recommend the OBGYN and pediatrics ones.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for STEP 2
This book and the whole collection of blueprints are the best sources for the USMLE step 2, they are a killing combination with Crush the boards, they are easy-to-read and they cover the most high yield stuff, also you got to use a good source of questions and practice a LOT, this is the secret to acing the USMLE.If you want to practice clinical vignettes, the Underground clinical vignettes are great . I got an amazing score in the step 2 thank to these books. Good luck !

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful resource for students creating case histories.
If you're a librarian serving first year med students who need to create case histories for hypothetical patients, you'll love this book. Blueprints in Medicine contains the information the students need, usually at a level they can comprehend (with the aid of a dictionary), and contains very little "excess" information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review for wards and Step 2
This book helped me rock Step 2. It may be inappropriate for Step 3, but for Step 2 it's very good. If you want concise review of relevant, high-yield topics in internal medicine, look no further. Helps for 3rd year rotations too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book, must buy
I used this book and the following which is also on amazon: Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
The first book is written in an easy style to make histology much easier to absorb for medical histology. I found this book to be righton for the topics I needed to know for my medical histology test. I also like how the material was presented; it was reader friendly and a very thorough review. The second book that I used for my medical histology class called: Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi was so on target with the type of questions asked on my histology exams. I highly recommend these two books to any medical histology students. I also wish I used these books when I took histology in undergrad. Anyway, I have brothers and sisters who have used these two books in other medical school histology classes and they got A's . Both books are must buys.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book..
The book (and others in the series I have used) is quite good, with clear, well-summarized material. There are a few caveats, however:
1. In this 1st edition, there are many typos. Most are obvious (mispelling, repeating a word or phrase or phrase twice in a row, etc.), but betray a lack of proofreading. I THINK all the important information is accurate, but the typos don't inspire confidence...
2. The font size is big, the line spacing generous, and there's lots of white space on the pages, which makes for easy reading, but as a result it's not a small book. It would be nice if some of the font sizing/line spacing were sacrificed for a more pocketable book that might fit in a white coat, like the "Recall" series. (The "Recall" series has its hits and misses, but Surgical Recall is a must-have book for the surgery rotation. Really. It goes very well with First Aid or the similar "Blueprints.")
3. The "Blueprints" series is very similar to this "First Aid" series, with the addition of a test prep. question/answer section in the back. It would be nice if First Aid had SOME sort of review mechanism--maybe Q/A's at the end of each chapter or at the end of the book.

Overall, it's a good series, even with my "gripes." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You must pick this up!
I'm a third-year medical student, and I've been worrying for some time now about how I'd decide what specialty to go into. Of course, nothing substitutes for some good, old-fashioned soul-searching, but Dr. Freeman's book will certainly kick your inner dialogue into gear.

What impressed me most about this book was the quality of information--everything was accurate, up-to-date, and written in an engaging way. I learned many things about each of the specialties I am consdering that I'd never read anywhere else. I also appreciated the fact that each specialty chapter is written by someone who's actually "been there, done that"--they're all written by residents.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to any medical student who is pondering what specialty to choose. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver!
This book is a must-read for anyone currently interviewing (or trying to interview) for this field! It helps spice up your resume and helps you get through tough phone interviews (the worst!).This book really did help me get my first pharm sales job last year, and I'm loving every minute of it. I gave the book to my sister, and now she's getting calls left and right for interviews. It really helps, even though it was pricey, and I've more than made up for it with my bonuses!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, Great, did I mention GREAT???
As I continued to get frustrated for months trying to get a pharmaceutical sales job, I finally bought this book. Guess what! It really helped me get a job. This is not just a book full of information, it really shows applicants creative ways to differentiate themselves and land interviews. It gives detailed iformation on how to create a great resume, master the interviews, and locate unadvertised jobs. Next week, I am going for training and it is all thanks to this book. This is truly a wonderful resource....a great book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Title was a LIE, few tidbits of information,
Hard to believe someone with much education and industry experience would state that your going to obtain an interview in three days. The market is tough, and the title here had nothing in the book to back it up.Try 3 weeks to 3 months, be honest.
I found a few other title's more real world and better written.
But for the money I would probably suggest buying two or three of the books on the topic (yes, even this one) and read them all.
Interviewing was tough, and I secured a job twice in this industry, the books do help.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for interviews!
While I don't want to be too overwhelmingly excited, I have to say "Wow"!I am so glad that I picked this book out of all the books on pharm sales and interviews. So far, it has been right on the money and really has answered all the questions that I have been asked in all my interviews. It gives good insight as to what type of person they are looking for and what answers or personality quirks that might throw up a red flag and disqualify a prospect.I am a firm beleiver in being yourself and this book helps interviewees how to let their inner sales person shine so that the interviewer can see thier full potential.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth it....really works!
I have worked as a Chemist in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing for about four years and have always had an interest in Pharmaceutical Sales.Lack of sales experience had been a major setback in landing a Pharmaceutical Sales position until I purchased this book. After completing the three day course, and realizing there were ways to get around lack of sales experience, I landed five interviews with top Pharmaceutical Companies such as Aventis, Novartis, First Horizon, GSK and Berlex labs.

Interviews went well and I recently accepted a position as a Pharmaceutical Sales Consultant with Berlex Labs.I wanted to encourage anyone and everyone with a drive to purchase this book.Well worth the money and it really works!
Best regards,

I think that this book would be more useful if it were in CD format. It would be a substantial time saver to be able to read the question, click on the answer and then immediately have the explanation shown below. It is a great book, but would be much easier to use as a CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent annotations
This is the only review book which backs up all of its answers with papers. I am finding it extremely helpful for my reviews for the boards, and enjoy the humor of the authors! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple. Concise. Helpful.
Blueprints in Family Medicine is not only useful for steps 2&3 USMLE takers. Students like myself have found this book useful as a quick and easy reference when in comes to common clinical problems and questions.

This book has helped me pinpoint to answers to medical cases discussed in school. It provides essential information and possible causes of common patient compliants.

The brief but substantial explanation of the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, diagnostic approach, and treatment/management of common diseases gives the student astute understanding of the disorders and diseases found in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blueprints in Family Medicine
