Book Description

-

Welcome to FRONTRUNNERS INTERNAL MEDICINE 2004 Q&A REVIEW, designed to prepare you for the MEDICINE BOARDS as well as the medicine and subspecialty components of the USMLE STEPS 2 & 3. Students who are preparing for the USMLE and are thinking about a residency in medicine as well as current medicine residents will ALSO be way ahead of the game when it comes time to sit for their medicine boards (yes, there’s actually one more exam after step 3 (!) and it’s the all-important one that makes you "board-certified"). This book is an excellent companion to the Frontrunners Internal Medicine Board Review Syllabus, which remains the syllabus for the Frontrunners Board Review Courses that are held throughout the year. While designed with the boards in mind, these resources are nonetheless outstanding study aids for medical students, residents, and practicing internists who simply want the best no-nonsense and most realistic Q&A review of internal medicine in all of its subspecialties!. And for those who are simply looking to expand their fund of knowledge in medicine, this back is without compare, and is ideal for health care professionals at all levels. If you’re a mnemonics fan (and who isn’t?) and you’re prepping for the boards, then you’ll definitely want to check out TURBO MNEMONICS FOR THE BOARDS. See the "Quick Order Form" at the end of this book. With OVER 400 MEMORY AIDS to the most commonly asked material, it can only turbo-boost your performance on the boards! Even if you don’t use the book for the anagrams and other memory aids, the content itself is outstanding prep for the boards when used in conjunction with these Q&A and Frontrunners Internal Medicine Board Review Syllabus, containing all the core material for the boards.

Over the years, we’ve been blessed with hundreds of questions and answers material that have been voluntarily submitted by physicians who have gone on to pass their boards, in their effort to help those "soldiers left behind"! We have therefore pooled for you from our database all the questions amassed to date, with answers and explanations.

This critical board review resource is chock-full of over 1,200 OF THE MOST REALISTIC INTERNAL MEDICINE BOARD REVIEW QUESTIONS YOU'LL FIND ANYWHERE FROM ALL THE RECENT EXAMS, because, just as important as knowing your stuff is being psychologically prepared. This book has also been popular in helping physicians make "connections" or concept links, so that "if you see this in the question, look for this in the answer."

Having said all this, we also realize that there are individuals who have, over the years, grown weary of tedious self-study and who'd rather take advantage of a sit-down, "feed-me" style of board review, even if the Frontrunners’ CD AUDIO SYLLABUS, SLIDE SHOWS and BOOK PACKAGES can just be ordered. For this reason in early August each year we continue to offer our more formal WEEKEND MARATHON REVIEW board review course which covers 18 hours of high-yield-only review for the boards over one Saturday-Sunday weekend.

HMOs are requiring that their PCPs be board-certified, or, at the very least, board-eligible to come on-board and stay on-board In fact, the terms "board-certified" and "board-eligible" are increasingly becoming an integral part of HMO contracts and renewal criteria. Being board-certified, therefore, is no longer a luxury. To some physicians, it’s more than just placating the HMOs or even maintaining one’s practice. It’s about personal challenge; it’s about being able to call oneself a "board-certified internist"; but even more simply, it’s about winning! We want you to win. However you plan to use this book, our greatest hope is that we help you achieve your goals and make your life, dare we say, a little easier?

With greatest wishes for you,

Bradley D. Mittman, MD FRONTRUNNERS BOARD REVIEW, INC ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars AM HIGHLY RECOMMENDING...
The book is an overdue, refreshing Q&A review that allows you to cover all the same ground in a lot less time. Explanations were to-the-point and just what I had to know. Scored very well using it for my internal medicine boards. As with many of the other reviewers, I got my copy for free when I ordered my Frontrunners I.M. Board Review Syllabus thru the Publisher's 866MDBOARD number which is also on the back of my book.

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY WELL DONE!
This was a great resource for my recert because 1) I saw alot of material straight out of the exam, which was really reassuring; 2) I liked the diversity of questions, which were also reflected on the exam; 3) I was able to get thru all the practice questions (there's easily over a thousand) twice before my medicine boards since the explanations are straight to the point. I used the Q&A in conjunction with the Frontrunners Syllabus, reading a chapter out of the syllabus and then hitting that chapter in the Q&A, which was very successful for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars RIGHT OUT OF THE EXAM!!
This was a great resource for my Internal Medicine boards because I saw alot of material right out of the exam, which was a pleasant surprise and probably why I did so well. I used the Q&A in conjunction with the Frontrunners Syllabus, reading a chapter out of the syllabus and then hitting that same chapter in the Q&A book. It was a great way to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars NO-NONSENSE APPROACH. PASSED EASILY.
I liked this "set'em up and knock'em down" approach to Q&A. Explanations were straightforward and intelligible. I easily passed my Internal Medicine Boards using this with their frontrunners syllabus. I agree with the other reviewers: the syllabus was just as excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars WORKS PERFECT W/ THE SYLLABUS
This was my main Q&A resource going into my medicine boards. I'm recommending it highly since I saw ALOT of the same questions on my exam. It worked great in conjunction with the Frontrunners Syllabus was truly outstanding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Step I book
Much easier read than some of the mountainous question books for Step I. Great companion to First Aid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great review
Very useful for the IMGs. Contains the majority of informations necessary to pass an exams that requires lots of associations between facts that just need to be memorized. The new edition (2002) has been greatly improved, it is better than other more popular comprehensive reviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review for Step 1
This book is so simple to read that I assumed that it could not be comprehensive. After the exam, I realized just how good the book was. The book looks thick but that is only because the charts and diagrams are big and clear and there is plenty of room to add notes. It is an excellent final review of key concepts and details. Much easier to read than First Aid. If you know everything in this book, you are very well prepared for Step 1.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical Boards Step 1 Made Ridiculously Simple
Fantastic review, very well written and presented Easy ,even funny form of presentation makes studying much easier. Absolutely A MUST for USMLE exams. Worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for boards study
I used this book for my clinical neuro class and it was excellent! It even has some epidemiology and statistics. It's all I used to study for this subject on step 1!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book nothing could be better!
You really need this book for Usmle as well as med school.Indispensable A book you will refer to over and over again

5-0 out of 5 stars Behavioral Science book you gotta have
Well, behavioral science is the most important yet difficult part to masterize in the USMLE step 1. That's why a great teacher ( at least they say so ) like B. Fadem thinking of all the world's students, wrote this book.
You cannot ask for more. Written in an enjoyable manner, with high yield facts, review questions on Each Chapter, and a final review exam, concepts definitely get into your hard disk ( or you will have to see your neurologist ). It's a masterpiece worth a place in your shelf, and of course, it's price is insignificant for what you will get.

5-0 out of 5 stars A++ Great review the potpourri of Behavioral Science!
Great outline review of all the parts that fit under the rubric of 'Behavioral Science' according to the NBME. Prepared me well for the NBME exam, and was a good review tool for class exams in Psychiatry. Highly recommended! Fadem is a great teacher too! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Questions
I thought this was far and away the best USMLE Step 1 Question book out there. It covers conceptual, high yield, board relevant material without going into the preposterous minutiae that a number of the question books out there are notorious for. The accompanying CD is excellent, and you can test yourself by system. There were some minor gliches in the CD, but these did not detract appreciably from the overall quality. I had the highest USMLE scores in my class, and I do think this book helped with that. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Review
I believe this e-book is a very helpful review. Not only does it give questions and answers, but it also gives rationale with references. I give it 4 stars. The only downfalls are that you cannot print the chapters/pages, and that the answers do not include the question...so if you don't remember the question, then you have to go back to look it up. Overall, it is a very good study guide and I would recommend it!

2-0 out of 5 stars TOO BASIC
This book was much too basic for my review purposes. Also, the questions in this book do not resemble the questions on the NREMT-P test.

5-0 out of 5 stars good job
mr. westfal did and excellent job with this book. i did kind of poorly in my medic class and when it came time for the final i got this review guide and passed with flying colors. especially the cardio section (which i struggled with in class) i had a much better understanding of what i was supposed to know about cardio drugs and reading dysrhythmias on an ecg and interpreting them into which algorythm i am supposed to use. and also there are not as many pasg pants ?'s which is good because in at least michigan they are elimanting the use of the mast pants and the pants are no longer on the ambulance. thank you again for your help mr. westfal, it was much appreciated. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Spectacular
I am a terrible studier with no attention span whatsoever, yet with the help of this book I went up 25 from my step 1. Here's what I did: I read this book, reread the blueprints books that I had read anyway over the course of third year, did most of the questions in the NMS book, then reread this. Whenever anything important-sounding came up, especially in the questions from the NMS book, I would write it into the margins of crush the boards. It took a fair amount of time, but certainly no more (probably a good deal less) than I spent on step 1. It was also far less painful studying for step 2 than for step 1.

The book is a nearly flawless summary of important points. It skips the basics (e.g. assumes you already know what a QRS complex is) and focuses on only the highest of the high yield. In fact, I'd bet that you could beat the mean just by reading this book alone.

One minor point, I ran out of time and did not review the "pictures" section at the end of the book (that's one problem with the book. It has very few pictures, and usually just suggests that you "know how to recognize" a given finding). As it turned out, there was not a single picture on my test. Maybe 4 or 5 films, but they were easy to identify. So it's not an issue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the last few weeks before taking the test
This is by no means a comprehensive review book but it's an excellent source of concise, high-yield info that's most effective when read several times shortly before the exam day. It contains so much of the material covered in the actual test and was definitely a factor in my (rather good :)) final score. Buy this, buy this, buy this!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time, don't bother with this book
I bought this book and reviewed it about three times now. It contains a lot of errors and it is not complete. And the index is terrible, if you try to look up something chances are you won't find it there. It is a good book if you just want to get the basic idea and read it for fun. But, I would not recommend this book for students preparing for USMLE Step 2.

2-0 out of 5 stars Expensive Toilet paper, read 10 min before exam
This, along with the other books by Adam Brochert are very misleading and very low yield. Just reading this wont help you
answer very long, tricky usmle questions. You need to get into the hard stuff : Harrisons Pretest for INternal Medicine is perfect for step 2 as well as Frontrunners Q&A.

The problem with most question sources is that they only require you to identify 1 piece of information to correctly answer the question. On the boards, you have to collect Multiple data then make a determination ; plus, their are distractors that no other question bank has ( eg : Kaplan ). Ditch this easy stuff and press your intellect with the challenging things as that is what you will see on test day. I know, this isnt a question book, but it represents the simple minded thinking that lazy people look for when selecting sources. High Yield INt.Medicine is Superb because it has more clinical info than this book and it can be reviewed over fast.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful review guide
I purchased this book per the recommendations that I read here. I was very pleased with the book and found it to be a helpful review book for step 2. I read the sections I had trouble with more than once. The book is organized in a very enjoyable way so that studying is quite painless. I did well on the exam thanks to reading this in the 2 weeks before the exam. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but to do well on the MCAT there is more to it...
Don't get me wrong, this book is good. It reviews the four major subject areas tested on the MCAT, and does it well. The information is there and pretty well organized. But for me the key to doing well (I scored in the mid 30's) was working through the past MCATs provided by the AAMC (not the exercises provided by Kaplan). My advice would be to read this book, but to leave yourself at least two weeks prior to the exam to just work through the past MCATs. I bought all the practice exams..., but they were worth EVERY PENNY.

I suggest you time yourself as if you were taking the actual exam, it helps A LOT. I thought the MCAT was a relatively long exam given the time alloted. Working through the practice exams helped me work on my time management skills, which helped me tremendously on the day of the exam. Also, the exams helped me understand the style of questioning on the MCAT. Although I never found the same question repeated on any of the exams, the type and format of the questions were similar.

CONCLUSION: Read this book, it is a good review book providing the needed backgound information. But I suggest you spend at least a couple of weeks working through the AAMC practice exams, under timed conditions, and reviewing their answer booklets.

4-0 out of 5 stars You need more than just this book!
I recommend that you buy a used copy of this book, even if it an older edition, I've heard they don't change that much from one year to the next (but don't go too old). The reason being because you should determine your weak area(s) and purchase the Examcrackers book specific for that subject. Whatever you do STUDY!!! Don't do what I did and just go take it, it ripped me up one side and down the other! I'm taking it again in August. I got the Examcrackers Verbal Reasoning to go along with this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Proceed with Caution
Kaplan is like a rapist in a bar looking for a naive girl who needs a ride home. They will tell you that they help people improve their MCAT score by an average of 8 points by enrolling in their program. A little thought can help one realize however, that this is far from the truth. In fact they have no ideal about how writting is graded on the MCAT or what sophisticated biology material looks like because they know that they can sell the old stuff and make the same ammount of money. They forget to tell you that an added pressure of 1200 spent dollars sits on your shoulders as you are taking an exam where PRESSURE AND STRESS DETERMINE ALL. Needless to say, real statistics show that Kaplan hinders more than it helps. About 85% of currently enrolled medical student's IQ was reflected in their choice to have not used Kaplan. Try this out for your self. Ask around. It is true. Proceed with caution before purchasing anything from this company!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Review of Science
This book is a very good review of all the science topics if you have already learned them. I didn't find them very confusing. They were concise for the most part. Every so often, the author(s) would start naming body parts, or enzyme precursors that you really didn't need to know, but I have heard that other books are even worse. I think this book will reteach you just about everything you need to know for the MCAT. Good Luck!

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent book
It's a good review book although it lacks some topics(check the topics' list from the official MCAT site). In my opinion it doesn't have enough practice problems and that's why I bought a workbook. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Written when some of its users were still in junior high
This book has strong word-of-mouth press, as well as a glowing review from the First Aid book. Its thickness is intimidating, especially for the BRS series, but the pages aren't too dense, so that it can be covered in its entirety in four days or less. Without having compared it to its competitors, I can still say that it does cover just about everything necessary to study pathology. Sometimes the book is a little skimpy on details that, in my own case, were filled in by previous overlapping study through other subjects.

A more substantive complaint is that the book is in dire need of an update: it was published in 1993. For example, the sections on lymphoma classifications and HIV treatment are hopelessly outdated. Along the same lines, the questions at the end of each section and the comprehensive exam at the end don't reflect the current USMLE testing style. For one thing, about 70% of the questions in this book are phrased negatively, as in "all of the following are true, EXCEPT...". For another, many of the questions are quite a bit pickier than my experience with the USMLE step 1 (three days ago).

The book also contains far too few photomicrographs, and those are all black and white, but this can be remedied easily with supplemental materials.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect reviewing tool for the extensive human pathology
Pathology is maybe the longest yet most important subject in medical school. Although not difficult to masterize, it can become a ton of bricks because of its extent. Now that, for USMLE step 1 is really scary.
Well, solution ( or pain attenuation ) comes in the shape of this book. Very well written, with high yield facts, review questions on each chapter and a final review examination, concepts really stick in your mind. Although it looks a bit fat for a review, you won't get nothing thinner and yet as complete. Moreover, it is useful through clinical wards, when you need to get fast facts just before the round..... Definitely, a must have !!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book
This book is second only to 1st Aid. It will help you through your Path course and help you ace the boards. Enough said.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this and start using it the first day of Path!
I would highly recommend you get this and use it for your path course-take notes in it, if you'd like. Then when it's time to study for the boards, you're familiar with it (probably have most of it memorized by then)! You'll be glad you did. It helped me ace Path (and no, I'm not a "star student") and it covers Pathology for boards as well

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent condensed version of Path
No doubt about it pathology is extensive, diffuse, and at times confusing. This book is EXCELLENT for helping to minimize pathology woes. Because it is so minimal in it's outline format, you can easily differentiate similar diseases. This simplified the unpalatable barage of facts that was presented to me in my pathology course and in reading Robbins.

I highly recommend using this along with your course to help minimize confusion from the very start. Then, when you need to sit down and memorize facts (a must for both pathology and the boards) this book does the job because everything is written in bulleted points and important facts are bolded. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching Strategies For Nurse Educators, August 19, 2003
As a future nursing educator I found this book to be indispensable. Over the past fifteen years of my nursing career, I have been in virtually every nursing educational setting. For this reason I have collected numerous books and nursing resources on the subjects of cognitive processes, learning and teaching techniques. This book by far pulls all the information together, and it will become the most utilized of my collection. The information is laid out in a logical format that starts with the basic concepts, theories, objectives and goals of learning. She then moves on to explain how to prepare and conduct classes. She concludes with the testing and evaluation process. DeYoung takes you gradually through everything you need to know to formulate and conduct a classroom setting that is both stimulating and achieves the goal of educating nurses to become critical thinking, problem-solvers. Her work employs the latest research on learning/education and at the end of every chapter she reinforces learning through case studies, critical thinking exercises and ideas for future research. Any nursing educator within the academic setting or within the clinical area would benefit from this text. She has made the material easy to understand for the beginning educator and advanced enough for the expert. I wish I had had this resource at the start of my career. I absolutely recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Parts and Not So Good Parts
Wow, I could've used this one year ago for my first nurse clinical class! This book starts off very promising. It is going to help you grab that elusive thing all teachers want, a class that doesn't put your students in a COMA. The part on learning theory is well explained with examples that pertain to us nurses. There are some basics on the nuts and bolts of instructing a class, again geared towards nursing. Part 2 is where I realize I'm not going to be teacher of the year with this book alone. After switching to patient teaching goals for awhile then we dive into multicultural concepts. I foud the chapter on multiculturalism to be ineffectual and sparse with no real expertise. I wonder why it was included in the book, perhaps it was there to meet an imposed standard. Part 3 is redeeming with some practical and useful ways to turn the learning on in the classroom. This book is useful for a new nurse educator in that she has lots of strategies to choose from with a good base understanding. The experienced instructor caught in the habit of stuffy lecturing can learn new tricks. Overall, this is a good book for beginners and a resource to expand upon.

Nurses are continuously involved in the education of patients, their families, students of nursing, and of one another. Teaching Strategies for Nurse Educators was written as a guide to help nurses learn how to teach effectively. To assist the reader in learning the concepts important in the teaching and learning processes, the author turns to multiple theories of learning which form the basis of understanding why and how people learn. The author notes that to be an effective teacher, a knowledge of educational theory and research, coupled with the desire to learn about teaching methods and the ability to look objectively at ones' teaching style and overall performance is a process which needs to be developed in the individual. The book provides descriptions of several learning theories associated with effectiveness in teaching and learning, and includes discussion of teaching methods and strategies. Each chapter incorporates Case Study, Critical Thinking Exercises and Ideas for Further Research. Developing critical thinking skills in the nursing profession is of paramount importance. The author addresses this issue by defining critical thinking, describes how learning this important skill can be inhibited by improper teaching methods to students in nursing school and offers strategies to enhance these essential skills. The book follows a logical sequence and states points clearly and effectively and stimulates thought on the part of the reader. References are sited throughout the text and listed at the end of each chapter. True to the Nursing Process, the book would not be complete without an evaluation of both the student learner and patient as the recipients of the information taught. Reading this book sparked my interest in education. I found this book to be both informative and stimulating; however, the breadth of topics covered was more than this reader had anticipated. Nevertheless, I would recommend this book to all nurses interested in enhancing their teaching skills.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Teaching Strategies"- A Resource You Don't Want to Miss.
This book is a wonderful resource for any nurse's library whether or not she is a formal educator. This book proposes to be relevant to all nurses, whatever field they may be working. All nurses teach. DeYoung indirectly acknowledges this simple fact by successfully examining the different facets of teaching and learning, whether it is to our students, our patients, fellow nursing staff members, or to precept new graduates. The book is categorized into three sections that focus on three critical topics in education: Teaching and Learning, The Learner, and Teaching Strategies. DeYoung's 30 years of experience as a nurse educator allows her to creatively weave relevance to all realms of nursing education into each of the three sections. Concluding each chapter are three features that focus relevance to the preceding material: Case Studies, Critical Thinking Exercises and Ideas for Further Research. These features provide the reader a fresh and innovative way of proposing current questions and ethical challenges in the career of nursing today. Any nurse would find these features helpful in stimulating creative and critical thinking within their students, peers and themselves. The intimacies of the book include many examples of how the teacher/learner process is interdependent and a fluid process. It emphasizes the need to continually adapt the educational process to focus on individual learning needs in the classroom as well as in the real world of nursing. This book is a gem for those nurses and educators who no longer wish to accept the statement, "we've been doing it that way for years," as an answer to their questions. It challenges the educator to go beyond the surface and to create a learning environment that rewards research based answers to our questions as well as innovative planning and problem solving for today's nursing practice.

Teaching strategies for nurse educators by Sandra DeYoung
The book was designed to provide a theory base to help nurses teach patients, staff, or students. This book has fourteen chapters divided into three parts: 1. teaching and learning, 2. the learner, and 3. teaching strategies. Part one focuses on good teaching, research and principles for good teaching, learning theories and concepts, and explains how to plan and conduct classes including writing objectives, selecting content and teaching methods, planning assignments and conducting the class. Part two discusses learners, motivation and readiness for learning, multicultural and gender aspects of learning and literacy. Part three presents traditional teaching strategies (lecturing, discussion, questioning, using audiovisuals, and interactive lecture), activity-based teaching strategies (cooperative learning, simulations, problem-based learning, and self-learning modules), computer teaching strategies (computer technology and learning, computer assisted and managed instruction, the Internet, and virtual reality), distance learning (advantages and disadvantages, clinical education, interactive television classes and Internet), teaching psychomotor skills, promoting and assessing critical thinking, clinical teaching, and assessing and evaluating learning. Each chapter has a case study to apply the information, critical thinking exercises, and ideas for future research. The book is well documented, scholarly, and practical. There are tables, figures, chapter divisions, bullets, and numbers to facilitate reading and understanding. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more
