5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I used this book primarily during my microbiology course. I did reference it while I studied for Step 1 also. The end of this book that contains "Summary of Medically Important Bacteria/Virus/Fungi/Parasites" is a great resource to have. Get this one early and read it, then reference it as needed for your board prep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Medical Microbiology and Immunology
Warren Levinson is a genius! This book is absolutely brilliant. I would recommend it to almost anybody who doesn't like dumbed down books like Lippincott. Levinson's Microbiology is clear and comprehensive. It tells you exactly what to focus on, and cuts out extraneous details. The immunology section is even better! You'll love this book. The questions are even fantastic in helping you remember all the bugs, and the quick summary reviews at the end make this book worth your while. One recommendation for the next edition is to add more clinically relative laboratory perspectives. Make tables and keep reviewing until the day boards comes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for boards
This book is an excellent source for the boards. It reviews important topics that are important to know and gives you an advantage. I liked the format of the book and it made studying painless and more enjoyable. I also used the following:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers
(ISBN: 0971999635) by Patrick Leonardi
I used both books for the USLME and it defintely helped me pass the USLME with ease. I felt both books gave me an advantage over other students taking the test. Both books are a must for passing. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good book for phelbotomy students
I think this is a pretty good book for phelbotomy students. The book goes into great depth about various blood tests and the equipment used. The language used was simple enough for laypersons to understand. This book also prepares you for the National exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am not a medical professional, terrific book!
As a layperson who wants to help people type thier blood with home blood typing kits, but be responsible about disposal, this books is a gem of information. The surprise for me is how much marvelous information is contaianed beyond responsible bloodletting. This book contains some anatomy, and describes the body systems. 5-0 out of 5 stars Superb and essential for physics boards
Using Huda as my primary source along with multiple years of Raphex questions and a single set of San Antonio review questions, I was able to do very well on the physics boards.

I would strongly recommend purchasing this book as all the material it contains is HIGH yield on the physics boards. Well-organized, concise, and easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars All you need for physics for boards
Huda, raphex and old questions are all you need. In that order. Even the fine print and tables in HUDA should be memorized.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slight correction
There is a seperate chapter in radiation safety, however this information is also scattered throughout the text. I would have preferred for all the material to be stuck in one section. Other people may prefer differently, but I find it difficult to remember all the factoids and magic numbers. Maybe a compromise solution would be a quick index section at the end listing all the "must know" numbers and formulas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best for ABR by default
It's certainly a managable size, but it's going to be difficult to pick up if your program doesn't offer any form of formal physics training. There are a fair number of annoying typos, the worst being incorrect choice answers (3 alone in the nukes section). It doesn't go into enough depth about radiation biology and safety, which has been recently emphasized on the most recent ABR exams and deserves it's own chapter in the text. All the same there's really nothing else out on the market of similar size. Bushberg is far more comprehensive but also intimadating in size, and most residents are not going to devote that much time to reading that text. There's enough clinically relevant material to drown in without wasting precious reading time to bulk up for a test that most people consider a nuisance and a money shakedown by the ABR. 900 bucks for a meaningless test. It would make the Mob blush.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Radiological Physics
The second edition of this text is a must have book for any Radiology Resident or Medical Physicist. Each topic's review is very comprehensive and written to the point. This text should be used by Residents and Medical Physicist prior to taking their certification exams. There are questions at the end of each chapter's subject and there are two mock board exams that will help the resident or physicist identify his or her weaknesses. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for histology class and USLME
I used this book and the following which is also on Amazon.com:
Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers.
The first book was written well and was quite helpful in preparing me for my histology exams in med school. Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (ISBN: 0971999686) was so on target with the kind of questions asked on my histology exams in med school. It also proved to be helpful for the histology portion of the USLME Step 1. It goes to show since I got excellent grades in my histology class and on my USLME. I gave my friends both of these books to study from for class exams and for the boards, and they all passed the first time. My advice is to get both books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must buy for USLME
I found the information in this book pretty on target for the topics that are needed for the histology portion USLME 1. This book is a very good reference because it helped me summarize the info better in a much shorter fashion than just going back to a long textbook. If you really want to know the type of questions asked on the USLME step 1, I highly recommend the following that is also on amazon. Histology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers (ISBN: 0971999686) This two study guides are must buys. There are both worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for USLME step 1
This was a good review for the histology portion of the USLME Step 1. It has similar topics that were asked on in the test. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Super for the boards
I found this book to be really helpful. I know people who used some other books to prepare for histology and regretted it. The book is laid out in outline manner which makes finding information easy. The questions were just like the kinds I encountered on my Step I exam. I highly recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good board review book for histo/cell bio
I felt that this was a good book to use for board review purposes. The outline format, like all the BRS books, is easy to follow and makes it easy to look up info. The end of chapter questions are the best part by allowing you to see if you really understood what you just read. It does not have the number and quality of pictures that a good atlas would have but it is a good book to use to supplement a histo atlas. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thought-stimulating
I really like this book. Its design is atypical for a "question-book" in that the format is not multiple choice; rather, the author(s) intend for the reader to reflect upon their theoretical and practical knowledge-base before formulating an answer. This makes this book thought-stimulating as opposed to standard multiple choice books, which may be good, but you will most assuridly never see those "same" multiple choice questions and answer-options replicated on an actual board exam. Good book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the greatest book for Pharmacology!!!!!!
This book was my bible for Pharmacology. Even though "Goodman and Gillman" contains everything there is to know about the subject, which medical school student needs to know all of that. The book first starts each chapter with a review of fundamental physiology of the normal body. Next it describes the drug and its effects on the body. Next comes the clincal pharamcology of the drugs. The understanding of pharmacology from reading this book is unparalleled.

5-0 out of 5 stars The "Bible" for Medical school pharmacology
Katzung is brilliant. This text was an absolute bible for my med school pharmacology course & on rotations. If it's not in the Katzung book you probably don't need to know it. An absolute must to do well on the boards.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, but too unwieldy for medical students.
This book contains way to much information for students in a semester-long pharmacology course. The book is accurate and in depth, but contains way too much detail for medical professionals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Facts For a Crime Writer's Research!
I write about drugs, crime, and prison. Most of Appleton and Lange's work is a MUST book to have by my side. Running Out Of Road is a story about the DANGERS OF DRUG ADDICTION. Thanks for your helpful book! Robert M Appleton :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars best practical pharm text out there
This book has been a great reference for me as I've gone through medical school. Clear, well written, and with excellent illustrations, the information is easily accessible and quite practical. It may be a little advanced for beginner students, but it's an absolute must have reference for someone with a need to know pharmacology. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Clinical case scenarios of OB/Gyn
This book gives you 53 major cases of Obstetrics and Gynecology as one of the Underground Clinical Vignettes series. Obviously, this book alone is not enough to prepare for USMLE Step 2, but the great thing about this book is that it really focus on the disease and keywords that actually appear in the exam (e.g. vaginitis, OCP, amenorrhea, eclampsia etc). You pick up this book, see any of the scenario and if you cannot guess the diagnosis by reading through the history and findings, or any of the highlighted keywords on the scenario is unfamiliar to you, you need to buy this book. If you can, forget about this series, and work on simulated tests.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not useful
In my experience, this book was not helpful for Step 1 preparation. Partly because Behavioral Sciences is not heavily tested in the exam and clinical vignettes are time consuming. Also, I felt that by studying a standard review book alone, I was able to remember the distinguishing aspects of each disease. However I am sure there are many people who would find this book useful.

2-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
This is the worst book of the series and is a waste of time. Pharmacology cannot be taught by clinical vignettes and the author himself recognizes this. In the book review section of First Aid, Dr. Bhushan admits that it is not an ideal review source. The problem is that within two lines of the clinical vignette, the drug is revealed, so there is no chance to guess the answer. There are less time consuming ways to learn the side effects of drugs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for USMLE prep
All three of the PathoPysiology books of the Clinical Vignettes series are excellent review books for pre-clinical students taking Step 1. Many questions on the exam are asked from a clinical standpoint. For IMGs who have clinical experience before taking Step 1, these books are less useful. However, they are still good to review unusual diseases. Since Pathology is so heavily tested in Step 1, these books are a good investment for anyone preparing for Step 1.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best of the series
I found this book very helpful in forming a clinical picture in my mind for all those confusing biochemical diseases. I felt this was one of the best books of this series. It is good to use after reviewing the subject. This book is not sufficient on its own and should be used as an adjunct to a standard review book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the cost
By the sixth edition, one would expect that most of the bugs had been worked out.Yet I found many things about this book troubling. The use of the English language was poor at best and sometimes non-sensical.There was little or no organization to each section, making it difficult to conceptually organize the concepts.A few random points are repeated, but it appears to be due to a lack of editing rather than for emphasis. There are multiple typographic errors (e.g. Hemophilia B written as afactor XI deficiency rather than factor IX (table, pg. 80)) and major contradictions [e.g. in the respiratory section, #61:"First restrictive then obstructive lung disease occurs in: (very very important) cystic fibrosis..." & #77:"...in cystic fibrosis (CF): (very important)...first, obstructive...then, restrictive...lung disease..."] Overall, while this book may contain a lot of useful information for the boards, extracting that information and deciding what facts are trustworthy or not makes this book not worth the high cost.If it is ever properly edited and re-organized I think it could make a good review book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written pediatric review
this is, unfortunately, the only book of its kind on the market. That fact alone is the sole reason that anyone should buy this book. The content is poorly organized. The author's command of the english language is evident in that I and my colleagues often found ourselves wondering what he was trying to say. The book is written in "question and answer" format, but it was difficult to use this format based on how the book was organized. For example, when the questions and answers are combined in one paragraph, it is very difficult to cover the answer while asking the question. The "diagrams" were useless and a completely inadequate preparation for the diagrams seen on the actual board exam. This book will be useful once the author hires a new editor.Incidentally, I DID pass the boards with flying colors, but that was due to my review of other sources (like Peds in Review) rather than this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent review.
A must read for all peds residents.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pediatric Board Certification Review (CD-ROM)- 4th edition
There are not many books or resources of this kind readily available; so I am thankful this author attempted to tackle the job. However, the CD-ROM is very difficult to use and read. I would probably prefer the hardcovercopy. The information covers all systems important to pediatrics, but itdoes not follow any logical order. The subject matter appears in a listform under each body system. It is best used as a resource for important"clinical pearls" essential to success on the pediatric boardexam. There are more than a few spelling errors as well. The introductionstates that there are pictures and diagrams as well; however, my CD-ROMcopy does not include any of what is described on the insert.I may have adefective copy; therefore, I am currently trying to contact thedistributor. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Board Specific
I first encountered this book when it was called "Biostatistics for the Boards" when I took the course from Dr. Glaser when he was teaching at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in 1990. Dr. Glaser was an exceptionally good and popular teacher and the book reflects his "no-nonsense" style. At first I thought it was a "dumbed down" statistics book as I had taken a full year of stats in college and my previous books had been huge and heavy textbooks. However, I soon found that the reason Dr. Glaser's book was so brief was that he concentrates only on the type of concepts and questions you will find on the USMLE step 1. The chapters are short and it is easy to review each one many times to firmly plant the info into long term memory. I had no problems at all with the stats on the USMLE. This book presents exactly what you need to answer all the questions on the USMLE without having you waste a lot of time studying things you will never use.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best source for USMLE
Are you one of those people that are scared of Biostatistics? Fear no more!! This book is for you. It explains everything in a very smart and simple way. Plenty of examples and tests help you to master the subject. If you study this book well, you will "understand" biostatistics and you don't have to memorize nonsense informations. two thumbs up!

4-0 out of 5 stars SIMPLY GREAT

For those who struggle with beginning and intermediate statistics classes, it's a jewel. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise Review Book is a Great first start!
This is a new book, published in 2003, a companion of sorts to the Intensive Review of Internal Medicine built as a study guide for the Pediatrics Board Exams.

The book is broken down into 5 major categories, including General Pediatrics, GI, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Neonatology, Cardiology, Allergy, Neurology and Child Development, Genetic and Metabolic Diseases, Adolescent Medicine, Infectious dissease and Immunology, Hematology-Oncology, Pediatric Surgery and Board Simulation. In addition the book includes a small set of color thumbnails for photos of common pediatric diseases and skin conditions.

Overall, the readability of the book is excellent and many of the topics are explained very clearly, for example, the endocrine chapter explains the spectrum of adrenal diseases in under 5 pages, highlighting the important points of Adrenal Cortical Deficiency, Adrenal cortical failure, etc. Each major topic includes epidemiology, pathophysiology, history and physical, diagnosis and treatment sections that makes each section very readable.

The chapters are subdivided into major topics, that cover topics in short, succint, easily digestible paragraphs, and are supplemented by many graphs, tables and charts. I did find a few of the graphics in the cardiology chapter a bit dated, and it would have been nice to have seen a more consistent graphic style throughout the book. In addition, since most of the photos are in black and white, some of the finer details are difficult to see, especially chest x rays and skin findings.

Some chapters seem more geared toward patient care than board review (which doesn't mean they not well written) and spend more time in detail that is not likely to be emphasized on the boards. It would have been nice to have included "boards pearls" or "hot topics" or "frequently tested material" more heavily highlighted in a book that is written for board review. Most of us are looking for a "First Aid for the Boards" type of book for Pediatrics, and this doesn't quite fit that mold. (There is probably no easy "shortcut" type book on the market, yet)

At the end of many of the chapters and sections are a handful of review questions to grill you in the basic subject areas. While most of these test relevant material, the question style is not exactly in line with the style of the Pediatric Board Exam.

That being said, this book makes a terrific general study guide. There is currently no other book available that does so much in as little space. You're not going to be able to read or carry around a Nelson's when you study for the boards, so this book is good for the major topics of each subspecialty.

In addition, this book provides many easy to read a chapters that highlights many important subspecialty areas. More available on the Medfools website. This quality makes it a great "pre-read" before each subspecialty elective in pediatrics that you may complete during a Pediatrics residency. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BRS Embryology
The BRS for Embryology was a supplemental text that I found incredibly helpful. The book helps to make even the most confusing development stages easy to understand and learn. It helps to weed through the details and focus on the main concepts. I found this book to be truly helpful in studying and preparing for med school exams for my first year. I would recommend this to any student who feels confused or overwhelmed by developmental anatomy.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent and time saving
